“So,” Kiyo echoes back, still a bit lost to the standing mirror before them.

“So, what do you think! It’s definitely different for you,” Ouma chirps, pacing from side-to-side with arms outstretched. It both draws attention and keeps his balance; it takes effort to be flippant. “You sure you’re not gonna break out in hives from Olive Green Deficiency? It’s not like we’d really know!”

Kiyo turns to face him, blinking away the thoughts clouding his reflection. Kokichi steps back, smiling as much as ever. “I think it’s. Suitable. The cardigan is nice, it’s.” Soft, in a way that uniform was not. Kind, in a way withheld from you until now.

“Definitely in the ‘maybe’ pile, it is easier than the straightjackets, but DICE has got an aesthetic, you know? I still think you oughtta join once I’m recruiting again,” Kokichi leans on the wall, weight concentrated on his left arm. “, , I can look for a longer skirt, if it’s bothering y–”

“No.”

They are equally surprised by the interjection for vastly different reasons.

“No, I mean. I’d like to wear this one. ‘Try something different’, yes?” Something you wouldn’t have been allowed t–

“'Course! That is why I said it,” Kokichi teases. He doesn’t skip a beat. “Besides, we’re totally twinning! No worries about people staring at you, they’ll be staring at us.”

🔪 A headcanon relating to fighting/violence

Kokichi isn't afraid to fight. We know this from canon; he's punched Kaito at least twice. I do think, though, that those were very likely the only two swings he took in the killing game, each exclusively as theater: to make a point to the other people watching (the class post-Ch. 4, Maki). Outside desperate circumstances, in my mind Kokichi will bend over backwards to avoid physical confrontation and make an active effort to never initiate.

That does not, however, put him beyond posturing. He threatens Shuichi even with a massive crush on him during FTEs, and drops them so casually it reeks of time spent desensitizing himself to the idea of cruelty and injury. Something he hates, possibly couldn't even stomach the thought of at one point, and decided to seek out (in a book-learning sense) to make sure he would never be caught fully off-guard. If not for his own sake, then certainly for DICE. He will 200% throw himself into harm’s way before willfully drawing (someone else's) blood.

I think on one occasion he's bitten Kaito, only because he'd needed to blow off steam and fully expected Kaito to move out of the way before they'd actually make contact. He was totally fine, more confused than anything, but the looks between them were incredibly awkward. So were each of their respective realizations that "he really left his guard down around me?" and "wait, did I genuinely catch him by surprise?"

TAPP!Kokichi prefers a good mind game to conflict, but has much thinner patience post-game. His default coping tactic of "just leave" isn't always viable, forcing him to try and mask his frustration for longer until he's out of sight. It's a challenge, especially on jacket days. Though Class 79 knows (to varying degrees, only the survivors and Kaito initially aware of DICE's stances but all of them knowing Ouma is Ouma) what's up, the other classes have a much more aggressive impression of him than he could ever uphold; before really interacting with him, a lot of them anticipate he's a purple Fuyuhiko. 

Kokichi does not go out of his way to correct them. (It always was easier to push people away. He can tell everyone else how to talk to one another and get what they want, it's what he's good at, but putting any of it into practice personally? Well....)

Then there's this comic, which, besides being the first one I did, seems a little incongruent with "not escalating to violence," but it isn't. In my mind Kokichi just chased him around for a bit with his lockpicks until he had to stop and breathe.

Kokichi feels like he has to make a demonstration every once in a while to discourage the other classes from seeing him as an easy target. It's a sort of pre-emptive strike. He picked Komaeda so he could blame his luck cycle for always failing to hurt him, rather than revealing he never actually wants to hurt him in the first place. I think Nagito's figured it out and lets him.

📓 A headcanon about their hobbies

I think he liked tabletop games pre-game, both popular and more obscure. The likes of Mysterium, Timeline, and Codewords next to things like Clue; lacking anyone to actually play with, no siblings and a hard time making close friends, the only one on a physical shelf was a good dozen handwritten sets of Apples-to-Apples flashcards held together with a rubber band. Social deduction games like Werewolf or Mafia were his favorite, and on the rare occasion he found himself with enough people willing to play, he would get Incredibly Immersed in the role. A bit too much for a party game.

He used to read through games of Mafia on message boards, one post at a time, where ‘day’ and ‘night’ phases last several IRL days at a time and in most games half the players are kicked partway through for inactivity. But once in a while you get a truly wild game that makes for a fascinating read.

They ah. Aren’t the same, anymore.

Besides games? He has a dedicated junk drawer in his room for interesting bits and bobs he finds around campus, coins and zippers and neat-looking rocks from the courtyard; things he’s decently sure nobody will care to look for.

Things people probably will care about, though, he either doesn't touch or actively tries to give back. He first really spoke to Rantaro after trying to stealth-return a ring he'd found in the gym by sliding it under his door... and getting caught, because he'd underestimated how good Amami is at staying covert. Kokichi insisted that he'd stolen it earlier in the day just to watch him squirm, and now he wanted to see if he could convince Rantaro it'd been in the first place he'd looked the entire time for his reaction.

Rantaro knows for a fact he had that ring twenty minutes ago, and hasn't seen Kokichi since breakfast. Haste makes you sloppy, alright?

But Amami didn't yell at him for it. No shouting, no swearing, just a smile and shrug. This man has younger siblings. He can see through Kokichi too much for comfort, could easily hurt him with that, and chooses not to. "Guess you got me, huh?"

Thus, almost immediately, he became beloved Amami-chan.

gosh ur so right anon. I am so sorry this got readmore levels of out-of-hand full spoilers for NDRV3 and also rated C for Current Hyperfixation.

favorite thing about them

Counter-intuitive, but I know my past self (including the era when V3 came out) would have hated Kokichi for the same reasons I like him now. Mainly:

I really did go into V3 expecting to loathe Kokichi as a nuisance at best; I’d been spoiled on Ch. 4  before getting into DR because I thought ‘my aim sucks I won’t play it anyway’  and, loving bees and assorted bugs as I do, I figured Gonta would be my favorite. And I mean, he’s up there, but this little shit. How dare he be an engaging character.

Unsure where I said it previously, but Kokichi seems like the kind of guy who would run a How to Beat [X Movie] channel out of earnest (admit so or not) love for the thought experiment of it all, which isn’t just relatable, but a very interesting Type of Guy to have in your killing game scenario. The one constantly pushing the boundaries, but not quite meta-level aware they’re in a video game; genre-savvy and trying to Actually Accomplish Something Constructive. He also goes about it in such a way that launches a couple malatovs at every bridge he has, which, having been anxious and overly rejection-sensitive in high school, is fucking wild to me. You are going about this in the worst way you could, on purpose, and that is fascinating. Mentally I am putting him in a microscope slide because What Is Your Deal

Plus, the way he constantly has some kind of front up to a point where Saihara can’t decide who he really is by the end of Ch. 5… hmm chameleon complex? I find it quite simple, really. Unclear to me if they meant to make him Like This but doubling down on constant over-performance of social signals because communicating frustrates you and it lets you feel some small degree of control in your life is (in my experience at least) very autistic of him and as a result hearing the whole V3 cast consider him entirely indecipherable down to the bitter end… oof ouch real anxieties? 

least favorite thing about them

A) Some of the iconography they chose for his talent. Which I’m pretty sure they pretty much ditched outside promos? So B) Some of his art in the wake of Ch. 4 is… wonky, but not in a way that looks fully deliberate? It undercuts the drama for me a bit. I think Kokichi seems much more menacing when he drops pretenses entirely and just goes blank instead of trying Very Hard to act out a particular emotion (like he does pretty much all the time). Instead of the demon face, something more like this?

I blame this for getting "The more that you suffer, the more I enjoy it" stuck in my head, plus the combo of "Now you'll never, ever forget me for the rest of your life! [...] I stole your heart, so now I'm satisfied." The two surface Kokichis asdfghjkl

Looking for quotes though it came to my attention that in Chapter 2 he says "[...] I wanna win this killing game! So I'm not gonna run from it, I'm gonna crush it! That'll be waaaay less boring, don'tcha think?"  kicking screaming they knew exactly what they were doing

random headcanon

Ah a lot of these are already sprinkled in TAPP so what’s one y’all haven’t heard before,,

He started painting his nails during the game initially to interrogate (RE: get-to-know) Rantaro, and kept doing it to discourage himself from biting his nails and cuticles all the time. There's only like one sprite where he does it, but I think it could be a nervous tick

TAPP!DICE may not be real but the tea party policy absolutely is

I've drawn him in skirts doing outfit memes, but I think for him it's less concrete than feeling like dressing femme sometimes and more that, post-game and organization-less, he has no idea who he's supposed to be anymore and is throwing pretty much everything at the wall in many facets of his life. Including but not limited to saying 'screw uniforms' and seeing how long it takes him to get in trouble with HPA for wearing different clothes every day. After long enough unchallenged he starts getting his classmates to do it too. Considering... their entire circumstances in TAPP, they get away with a lot more than the other classes 

unpopular opinion

Is it unpopular to say that some of the info from Kokichi’s FTEs should have been in the main plot? The knife game scene, besides being my favorite, seriously clues the player into what he’s like beyond the artifice without having to posthumously dump that exposition in his room, and that a lot of players confused by him are likely to miss out on characterization that would clarify things Irks Me.

🍫 A headcanon about food

Rantaro is almost always the tiebreaker when the class (or a subset of the class) can’t decide where to eat. The travels in his memory are extensive, giving him a long and varied list of things he likes. The nail polish event and his general perceptiveness make me inclined to think he loves sharing the things he’s experienced in his travels with his friends, food being no exception. During the game he was developing a mental map of who seemed likely to enjoy what; TAPP!Rantaro has since been writing down an ever-expanding list in his notebook. Talking to as many people around HPA as he does dredges up bits prior knowledge he hadn’t known he had.

Rantaro always meant to start documenting his adventures, but was always too busy in the moment to actually keep up with journaling. He recalls a half-dozen attempted travel logs squirreled away somewhere, none past 5 entries. Post-game, however, TAPP!Rantaro has taken to listing a lot of things in a pocket notebook as a way to cope (and recording notes-to-self on his phone). What started as a utility swiftly became ‘trying so hard to make an Aesthetic bullet journal spread it’s practically useless’ and gradually mellowed into ‘doodling in the margins because he feels like it rather than doing something he hates for social media points’. Kiyo can tell you all about stationary from a standpoint of cultural significance, but Rantaro knows which brands of ballpoint and gel pens write the nicest on pure vibes.

It occurred to me that I've never sat down and drawn out just TAPP!Maki without context of a comic before, so here's a better reference for her outfit (plus a more canon-adjacent one). I'm not exactly a character designer, but I wanted to give her clothes to reflect how she's changing in this AU; she first tries to give off more friendly, approachable vibes as 'Ultimate Child-Caregiver', but, failing that, finds she still wants to come across as more sociable and less distant with a little lighter overall palette.

Most notably she cut her hair as part of a "new beginning" at the school. She hates being an assassin, but also wants to put her new skills to use as an 'Ultimate Bodyguard' (or something to that effect) when her first attempted major switch doesn't work out. The boots offer a bit of shin protection and are less likely to turn an ankle when running. There's also an element of reclaiming her own childhood that comes through in the extra hairclips, earrings, and bigger emphasis on her bow. They're impractical, but she's still a teenager; not everything needs to be practical, yet. They still have some time left to be kids.
