so normal about the gender fuckery of the Polish murderbot translation (lie i am on the verge of tears)
#it uses verb inflections that imply it/otherwise non-binary pronouns in first person#and it looks like in third person the translator went with#she pronouns when using security unit (bc the word unit is gendered female in polish)#and he pronouns when using Murderbot (bc the word robot is gendered male)#which... isn't ideal#but in a language this excessively gendered it was always going to be messy#and it's the first person verb endings that matter most bc you're reminded that mb's opinion on gender is No Thanks EVERY SENTENCE. !!!!!!!#the fact that the translator went with that instead of the easy route of he pronouns#(which are unfortunately kind of implied in the name Murderbot/Mordbot in polish since like i said robot/bot is gendered male)#is so so so important to me#(and ofc half the reviews for this translation include complaints about 'woke' verb endings 🙄 whatever)#.txt#books#murderbot

Not me adding annotations to a book to make it more accessible for my mom when she will read it
#i am once again complaining about italian translators not adding enough context and explainations in queer non fiction books#90% of non queer people or people who do not speak english don't have enough fucking context to get certain things#i need tranlators to add the necessary context to make these books accessible for everyone#olay surely mainly queer people will read a book about going outside the binary but if we want more people to understand us#we need to add the necessary context to make these things comprehensible to everyone#both those who do not have a queer background and therefore have never see certain words and those who do not speak any english#why the fuck are we assuminng everyone reading this knows english and the linguistic and cultural context between certain words#most people i know do not know one word on english and since it's an italian translation you should make it completly accessible for anyone#i don't want people to read this with their phone in their hands to look for meaninga here and there#i have had this complaint before and i will keep complaining#it's frustrating because this book makes the concept of going outside the binary very easy and accessible and the translation is not as good#also the translation of this particular chapter did a terrible job language wise too so i can't expect much#the concept is there but oh boy do a few sentences look like they have been translated with google#so yep i resorted to making my own notes because i want my mom to read this and understand it without here needing to ask me for context#i mean i want conversations to start but not because of translation reasons if you know what i mean#and it would be very unmotivating to read a book that has too many words you don't know bc the translator took things for grated#cris speaks#i am done complaining for now#the og book is super good tho i am happy i am reading it again after so many years#the---hermit

(Can't quit decide what would set Alastor off this much- a breakup, Lucifer getting a little to close to Alastor reason for actually being at the hotel, or just the worst timed yo mama joke in history- but let's be real, Alastor was drafting this the second Lucifer walked in the front door in Dad Beat Dad, so yeah, have my re-write Open Letter (Interlude) a deleted Hamilton song)

nnnnggghh are these ppl fuckling stupid wtffffff
#i cant fucking beieve it oh my goood!#so ive sent 3 emails and called them twice - my doctor's office#i need 3 documents from them for my health insurance so my top surgery will be covered#so 2 documents of these are just results of test they've done. easy roght. zhey hv these pdfs ready sitting somewhere in their software#i even added the dates the tests were taken so they could easily find them and just add them to the reply email and send it to me#the 3rd document is an evaluation so that might take some time to write. maybe 3 hrs max if my doctor rly puts his whole pussy in.#i don't hear anything after a week. i send a 2nd email. i hear nothing so after 2 days i call. the nurse on the line says it's being taken#care of. or smth along these lines. i hear nothing so the next monday i write a 3rd email. i hear nothing. today it's been 3 weeks#since i first contacted them. i call them again. the nurse tells me they sent everything in the mail last week. why tf are you sending it i#the mail instead of just replying to my fuxcking email???? anyweay then the nurse says oh it looks like we sent you only 2 instead of 3#documents. she tells me she'll send everything in an email today. i hang up i get dressded i rush downstairs to check the mailbox.#the letter is there i rip it open. it's only 2 documents. like. WHAT. i made an indented list numbered 1) 2) 3) in my email so it would be#easy to spot that i need THREE documents. how tf can you think oh yeah the patient wants 3 documents. but i'm putting 2 in the enverlope no#this is right and im not making a mistake now. anyway after 2 hrs i get an email w 3 documents in them. i finally feel relief bc my#health insurance wants that shit until next tuesday. mind you i reached out to them THREE weeks ago and i contacted them 5 times in total.#i open the files. only one (1) document is actually what i need and it's one of the lab tests. the 2nd lab test i need is not there. instea#there's a completely different lab test. from a different year (i literally wrote the fuking dates so they knew which tests i need!!!)#the evalutation i need which i thgoiught might take a max of 3 hrs to write is 2 sentences long. it doesn't address the actual issue that i#need evaluated. it took you THREE wekks to write 2 sentences that are WRONG??????#are yiou fuckihg stipouzds!! am i going insane like wtf is going on#i can use this to wipe my ass but not to hand it in for the health insurance!!!! *screams*#now i sent them another email (the 4th email) asking them to send me that test results that i need. i added the full name of the test#and the date it was taken. even checked my calendar to double check i got the right date. these ppl probably fucking hate me now#but. do your fuxking job!!! how can you not read how can you take 3 weeks to add 2 pdfs to an email and then one of them is the wrong one!!#idk what's going on but i suspect maybe they don't hv the results? maybe the tube was lost in the mail or it was too little blood to do the#test or the lab couldn't do the test for other reasons. but if this is the case. why do they not fucking tell me that?? l#like we are all adults i get that sometimes stuff doesn't work out or mistakes are made i promise i'm not mad (initially) i just want to#work together w you to find a solution#same w the evaluation. i suspect the dr doesn't hv the expertise or he can't fucking read idk but if he doesn't hv the expertise#instead of not replying for 3 weeks and then writing some 2 sentence bs that has nothing to do w what i need. you could've just told me you

no WAY is deltarune having me fight a god damn biblically accurate angel made of darker than darkness with a fight system that its previously only used for THIS lonely dyslexic sweetie pie
#the system is really fun i admit#but having such different enemies being the only ones to use it is so funny#evie post#well actually i suppose it makes sense#since the titan is like the epitome of scary and monster and dark#and jack is a halloween decoration (the dark scarytime holiday)#so like it lines up#just on very different levels#titan is actually pretty easy so far#the attacks are fairly easy to dodge#so the main point of challenge is its gonna take quite a few turns#i hope fighting it is the right thing to do....like id assume it must be right#because its got no mercy gauge and ralsei himself told me to fight it#so i just hope it doesnt negatively affect my so sweet and nicies route#deltarune spoilers#<-have just been using the maintag for spoilers or just leaving it#but the titan is a massive spoiler and this would just clog up the maintag#i talk a lot in the tags huh#even when my post is rly shott#i suppose its because i can have lots of sentences and they get split up naturally by the tags#compared to the main post where actual sentences and full stops look bizarre#its like a little extra surprise for people who like reading my posts#ur welcome for all the extra content my loyal fans

UNRELATED: at 344 hours of chinese listening and I finished HP5 audiobook. (and the audiobook did NOT need to be 31 fucking hours, it had so much filler, but being optimistic I guess it made me practice listening for 31 more hours >o>)
My options now are: force myself to listen to and finish HP6 and HP7, despite being sick of these fucking audiobooks, because that's around ~60 more hours of practice listening and I am a stubborn fucker. I am stubborn and spiteful and I KNOW I'll fucking understand HP6 and HP7, so they'll be 'comprehensible input' listening material. I know I'll understand so they'll definitely cause improvement, I know I'll understand even if I only pay partial attention because I understood all of HP5 with partial attention, I might learn 1000-2000 more new words from them which will make FUTURE listening easier, and I can say I honestly tested out 'using all of the HP audiobooks to improve my listening in a language' and can compare my experiences to others who have done it.
Like this Spanish learner, and these people in the comments, including ZoomSOM "At ~550 hours right now and halfway through the fourth audiobook. I understand 95-99% of the "story" but miss some of the details." A lot of people mention 600-1000 hours to understand HP1, but as we know HP4 is much harder than HP1 and HP5-7 are the hardest with the most unique words. I am guessing maybe 1000-1500 hours to understand HP7... but I can't find anyone listing specifically HP7. This person read all of HP by 1500 hours.
So it looks like HP5-7 seem understandable to many people learning Spanish by around 1000-1500 hours. For the early learners, 450-600 hours (but it was 450 hours for HP1). So for Chinese, (a doubled Dreaming Spanish roadmap) that would be 2000-3000 hours. And for early learners, 900-1200 hours in Chinese. I have 891 hours of Chinese listening total now (547 estimated hours of prior listening, 344 hours since starting my chinese listening experiment). So either I am REALLY good at listening to audiobooks... or I may have underestimated the hours of prior listening/hours of comprehensible input I got.
I wonder if my estimated hours of prior comprehensible input should be higher...
I also wonder if when I finish HP6 and HP7 audiobooks, I'll be as good at listening to Chinese as those people with 1500 hours of Spanish are with listening to Spanish. Not necessarily, as some people listened to HP1-7 in Spanish from hours 450-600ish, and still had to keep listening to Spanish until 1500 hours to see the progress they wanted.
I will probably... just fucking finish this audiobook series. I can't properly compare myself to other learners who listened to these, and their results, if I don't even finish doing it myself. So I suppose that's settled. -.- I'm going to 'speedrun' these fucking audiobooks, and somehow listen to them in a few days each. So I can get through them asap. Thankfully, I no longer need to re-listen to them to understand them. (A form of self torture I'm sure, making myself listen to HP1-4 two times. I sure felt like I was suffering by the time I got to HP4).
Afterward I'm gonna fucking reward myself and either listen to MoDu audiobook all the way through or ZhenHun all the way through. I'm already rewarding myself by listening to MoDu audio drama in the evening, a nice palette cleanser. (And yes, alternatively learner podcasts could be listened to but I just get SOOOOO bored of slice of life daily life podcasts, so fucking bored of learner materials so fast)
#rant#chinese listening experiment#so hears the deal. i bitch and bitch. because I hate HP. and some of the childish squeaking actors are driving me up a wall.#but in terms of using it as learning material? It is quite useful and I'm just bitching#It is 1. basically graded listening material (since each book adds ~1000 unique words). 2. a LOT of fucking practice with simple sentences#since the books are so long (it's going to be like 200 hours of my study so far) 3. The narrator guy reads incredibly CLEARLY and just#slightly slowly (which is easy for learners to get used to and to clearly hear new word pronunciations)#4. the actors ALSO all read incredibly clearly and act out the emotions STRONGLY which helps provide context#and differentiate who is talking#5. the scenes ALL have sound effects which also provide context (crowds have crowd background noise. rain has rain noises.#flying has wind noises)#Like... in honesty they are very well made Chinese audiobooks which are very accessible - in Hoopla app free - and very easy to understand#As a comparison - Twilight is as easy as HP3 audiobook BUT the characters all talk more like actual teenagers. So the voices in Twilight ar#all more slurred/muffled/less intense tones compared to the HP audiobooks#which is harder to listen to and parse if you haven't been practicing listening.#as a learning material the HP audiobooks are quite useful. as much as im bitching because im sick of them#i recognize the reason a lot of other learners find them useful

I disdain and hate Engish dialogue punctuation. I'll explain.
With M-dashes for dialogue and quotation marks for thoughts and inner monologues, the text is objectively a lot easier to read without actually reading the script. You're aware of what to expect, grammatically, and can adjust to the author's pace this way.
I am a fast reader, it's all vital for me and it's a generally good exercise to try and implement grammar as a pace marker.
But the way English-language allows for random placements of the spoken speech is aggravating; it's not, technically, the language's fault, but I totally understand why people constantly feel lost or don't understand the system completely. I don't understand it either, and in a sense, I reject and resent it.
How are you supposed not to if everything looks exactly the same?
Especially when it allows this to exist:
"A lengthy line of dialogue", character A says. "A line that belongs to its own paragraph and is poorly indicated, if at all", character B adds. [Unrelated things are happening here and it's not clear why they're not their own paragraph.] "Line." [who said that???]
Bonus point if there is no indication and the reader is expected to utilise the power of cosmos to understand who said what lest they don't want to reread an entire scene multiple times to simply be able to digest it.
It's partly author's fault. A paragraph is a concealed thought, it should be lone in most cases, but intertwined with everything else. We as authors should always remember this.
But the language allows to mush these thoughts together. It creates a sense of the flow, yes, to write like this; but then its reading is done backwards. You have to look at the end of the next sentence to know who said it, then read the line, then read everything assembled together, and even if your eyes were trained to do that in seconds, it's tiring and unnecessary. Cute but rocky flow, perhaps you shouldn't write like this, maybe it's better to opt out for something like this:
"Line." "Line?" "Line x10." "Oh. Line then."
If a paragraph is a concealed thought, the thought can also be a compound of smaller thoughts. Yet they shouldn't be convoluted or smooched together too tightly they're nigh impossible to untangle?
With M-dashes, this would look like this:
— A lengthy line of dialogue, — character A says. Character B adds: "A line that could still be its own paragraph but now fits as it is clearly marked as an addendum BEFORE the line begins; could be possible with the previous example but is rarely, if ever, structured this way". [Things became their own paragraph.] — Line. — Still unclear who said that but at least it is its own thing now.
And this is one of two cases when "" aren't used for thoughts and inner dialogues; another one is when your entire dialogue is back and forth and can be presented as its own paragraph.
It also makes the text read extremely fast because you take in the sentence structure first and then populate it with words and senses.
I'm angry at this, evidently. A lot of thought goes into where it should not belong—ttp it feels like a honest downgrade from Russiаn. The punctuation should be the rail regulating of reading, not a labyrinth or a some kind of twister game.
#днявочка#eng tag#after throwing so big of a rock at english's lawn i will throw an equally big rock at russiаn: russiаn texts are unreadable ->#-> because people constantly mess up serious grammar and generally have a very scarce idea what connotation even entails#russiаn's rigid grammar is perfect for writing. its dictionary however is full of colours and colour theory is excessively hard to master#those who try are fine by me. but the majority of russiаn writers can't see a difference between green and red#they dont even try rather. and it's hard to tell if they know the language at all. because they mess up tenses(?) as well#when writing in russiаn you need to keep in mind the verbs and participles must stay in the same tense—or times#it's different with english because in english you need to change the verb forms only and in russiаn you change words' endings and suffixes#people tend to forget that and the results are more than have instead of had or wrong word form used#as in in english you'd have two tenses clashing you with different time. in russiаn you will have a time bog#next stop: participles can be “attached” to nouns or verbs. hence they're divided into two groups by what they can be attached to.#and they change accordingly to their “parent word”'s grammar. a tad bit tedious. but doable and easy to remember#well after you've done few tables of writing the same sentence in different cases and in different times#messing THAT up is very easy lots of people dont catch when they're tired im guilty of it but we dont allows funsies to appear#funsies as in. in russiаn it's ridiculously easy to animate the inanimate bc of it and give train stations hats that they can lose to winds#anyway. im linguistically angy

i love websites that contain text-based information
#'is this not every website?' well maybe. if you're deep enough into cheese prices i guess the grocery store website is allowed to count#and there are interesting things about youtube without watching the videos etc etc. anything is information#but you know what i mean. i mean wikipedia#but i also mean the few and far between parts of the internet where stand alone websites are still being maintained by someone#who is passionate enough to start a whole website for the thing in the first place#i'm thinking about some of the websites about flags i visited a while back. websites about airplanes. i love you websites about airplanes#i am also VERY specifically thinking about thai-language.com#an incredibly comprehensive online thai dictionary with transcriptions marked with tone and MANY audio clips#with context notes and long long loooong lists of example uses in both compound words/phrases and actual sentences#AND their search is actually functional and the website is incredibly helpfully set up and easy to navigate from word to word?#and it's FREE???#literally truly genuinely. makes me feel the way looking at ao3 does. i'm overwhelmed with love#also in the way that i can easily lose a few hours there though. in that way too#*#wait i just noticed they have a typing game!!! this is opening up a new world for me and my thai keyboard stickers#'Objective: Prevent Mars from being invaded by Thai orthography.' fjdkf GOD i fucking love the internet

Yahuul is the women of all time i love her and she speaks sign language? Love her even more, SHES A BADDIE SHE DOES NOT CARE
just for clarification, yahuul is nonbinary and does use they/them pronouns BUT i don't think there's any way you would know that from the comic only so do not feel bad.
THAT BEING SAID, you are so right. an absolute baddie. an icon.
#one thing i want to do in their next appearance bc i realized later that it's kind of............ probably not super cool#is they mostly use one word phrases#because it's easy to look up one word at a time lol#but i'd like to have them use more phrases#idk. just more variation#but that's not relevant to this ask lol#just my thoughts#asks#noeggets#because its like. a language.#you can use it for complex thoughts and sentences#so i feel like i should at least sometimes you know?#like yahuul isn't a hugely chatty#but still#WHATEVER its just something i've been thinking about so thank u for giving me a chance to rant about it lol

if im being honest and allowing myself to vent a bit about it ... another red flag was when the DM went 'wow i love the detail of your backstory but idk what i can do with it tho ):'
#[static]#it immediately made me feel bad for trying to make a character work with the aesthetic she had given us tbh#i could already tell she didnt seem to be super character story driven so i just made a pretty simple drifter-type#for a post-apocalyptic setting n such and made a group that tied into the whole over-arching premise#i also literally just did bullet points cuz i could tell she wasn't gonna want to read one of the backstories i usually do#and as someone who has mostly dm'd in the past i did my v best to make a character that was super easy for the dm to incorporate in any way#like a solid reason for being there a reason for wanting to adventure with strangers a reason for seeing the mission through no matter what#made a whole small faction and connected them to the overarching theme and plot in multiple ways#wrote down lore and npcs she could use for the faction if she didnt want to make up her own#like all the works and all i got was two sentences back about it ... one of them being like 'cool but i dont like the extra details'#aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh#ok im done yelling now i just need to vent for a second#i feel bad for feeling kinda bummed about the experience because this is the first time i got to play at a physical table in years#and i know how hard it is to DM#but also when you come to the table with zero notes for the first session its ... probably gonna be disappointing jkfghdf#i DID have fun however because the party banter was hilarious and it was fun getting to hang out with ppl!#but communication between DM and players was not great#also let me be clear she did like that i made so many connections and hooks into the story and it helped her a lot#she was NOT interested in my character's past like ... jobs or npcs#but also u could just Not say anything about it and just be like 'sweet cool thanks for the info' LMAo

i think it is probably a sign of the process of healing from the trauma of having every word out of my mouth ripped apart, mocked, and treated as an unforgivable offense warranting Extreme Rage and Vitriol, and having it explained to me in excruciating and hateful detail why my thought processes and basic turns of phrase and the things i thought were worth expressing were stupid worthless gibberish, unbearable to listen to, and the root of everything wrong with society, by redditor-ass faux-intellectuals in my life growing up for being awkwardly phrased/not concise enough/mildly whimsical, that some days i'm proud of my meta and some days i can barely stand to look at it. but god that does not make the second one more fun.

Choose your fighter: being able to feel confident in writing a scene with more than two characters, not worrying about sentence structure, or writing effortless descriptions.
#BECAUSE APPARENTLY YOU CAN'T HAVE ALL THREE AT ONCE#i'm fine i'm just feeling a little hysterical bc i've been worrying about equal 'screen time' between characters when there's more than two#which is proving to be a bit of a problem when one of my favourite ships to write is a poly ship#i think that solution is you don't have to have them all in frame at once one can just he vibing#but anyway started a second new wip of today to try and get back in the rhythm and just write something fluffy without stakes#only to hit into the wall of being very aware of my sentences which hasn't been so much of an issue#so far so good with the descriptions though#BUT ANYWAY#one day. one day i will get all three. again.#that's the most frustrating part: the fact it used to be so easy#it'll work out#and hey at least i'm laughing and not sobbing#which past me would have done#writing#lit writes#lit talks

Lol what?
Fourth person POV is a literary perspective and it doesn't involve "fourth person pronouns" because "fourth person pronouns" do not exist. "We" and "us" are first person. Regardless of how you use them, they can only be first person. People are confusing numbers again, just because they want the numbered items to be the same.
Chat is a noun. You can replace chat with "y'all" because chat is a noun and you can replace nouns with pronouns. You can replace chat with "someone" or "everyone" because those are also pronouns and that is still how pronouns function.
Noun or collective noun, definite or indefinite, it is still a noun. You can identically replace it with "reader" or "viewer" or "listener", and still cover whatever specific meaning the speaker might have in their head at the moment of use. Those are also nouns.
Chat is a noun, and it's simply not that complicated. People can try to call it fourth person all they want, and they will still be wrong about it. Doing complicated mental gymnastics doesn't improve the argument.
Speaker intent doesn't matter and neither do the ill-educated opinions of schoolteachers who evidently don't understand what a noun is.
I keep seeing the "chat is a fourth person pronoun" post and it's getting increasingly hard to avoid starting discourse in the notes of it. chat I don't think they know what these linguistics terms they're using mean
#the contortionism of people trying to defend a fake pronoun is amazing#all the difficulties go away when you realize it's a noun#it doesn't NEED to be anything else#all the pronoun use cases are FULLY COVERED#regardless of POVs or 4th walls#pronouns cap at THREE#you me and everyone else#he/she/they quite literally covers the entirety of the remainder by definition#and as great as schoolteachers are they are certainly not an authoritative source#idc if some teacher thinks something is real this is failing every basic logic test there is#it's simply nonsensical#an easy mistake sure#but also easy to explain#commentary#grammar#you do not need the speaker's intent to correctly identify grammatical parts of a proper sentence#'chat is this real' is self-explanatory
