Intentional, or willful, coincidence, to me, is as persistently beautiful and deep as the theory of relativity — where the seemingly random moments and proximities of life align with hidden purpose, like threads woven into the fabric of the universe. Coincidences, though unplanned, carry a quiet elegance by themselves, suggesting that behind the chaos of the world, there is already a somewhat intricate design at work. Just as relativity reshapes our understanding of time and space, moments of space-time synchronicity reveal a deeper, invisible connection between all things.

"Hey," my dad messages me. "Didn't you get a new Yoko Tsuno comic album recently? I'm not sure which ones I still need to read. Can you bring it with you when you come over tomorrow?"

I'm a bit taken aback. I feel the need to check the sender of the message. But yes, it is my dad.

Yoko Tsuno has been my role model for almost 30 years now. I discovered the comic strip when I was maybe eight years old and fell in love. Yoko is a Japanese electronics engineer living in Belgium. She has adventures that stretch both time and space, literally. She is kind, competent, and compassionate, and makes friends with everyone - even those who at first oppose her. I grew up with Yoko. She's one of the characters in literature that have shaped me.

And yes, I did ask and receive the latest comic album for Christmas.

But I had no idea that my dad has been reading them.

Comic strips and comic albums are a staple in Belgium. We had plenty of them at home when I was younger and borrowed even more from the library on a regular basis. I know my dad still buys and reads a particularly famous Flemish series, and that he also borrows some more obscure ones from the library. Many of the ones my family collected over the years were done away with as we grew older and when my parents moved from the house I grew up in to the flat they now inhabit. But a rack of comic albums still lives in said new flat.

Including the Yoko Tsuno ones. They are all mine, I'm pretty sure, but I just read them when I'm at my parents' or take a few to my place and then exchange them when I visit them again. My youngest sister also likes to read them, so it's easier that way.

That's whom I send him to when he asks his question. I read the latest album, then took it with me to my youngest sister's when I stayed with her for the new year.

I wonder how long he's been reading them and why I never noticed. I wonder if he's been binging them. Is it a recent thing? Is that why a few months ago he thought of calling their new robot vacuum cleaner after the AI system in Yoko Tsuno's space ship? So many questions.

I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

One of my favorite choices the Apothecary Diaries made was making the Emperor a “normal guy” (as far as I know as an anime-only). He’s not evil. He’s not hindering Mao Mao’s journey. He respects the concubines.

If anything his lack of autonomy and presence as the most powerful person in the country further enhances the show’s themes of working within the confines of class and gender inequality.

The previous emperor was a horrible, horrible pervert. Okay, then this emperor only weds women of age… Until he’s forced to take his father’s precious wife due to politics. The current emperor reasonably avoids her.

Eunuchs exist? Bam! now the surgery is outlawed, but this will create a reduction in male labor around the palace.

The emperor clearly favors few women. Well, now he must recognize a concubine with a powerful politician father playing the system.

He supports Mao Mao toeing the line of social expectations for women, but hasn’t removed the law against women preparing medicine. It makes one think, if he wanted to, could he make the change at all? For every two steps forward, he’s forced to take one step back.

In this universe even the Emperor is limited by social pressure and the expectations of his station. His life and that of his children is out of his control, and if that isn’t such a compelling piece of world building I don’t know what is.

If that’s how the author twists the narrative of the Emperor you better believe her female characters dealing with women’s issues in this society are even better written.

Just remembered, as I was cooking some potato, about that time I went on holidays at my (now ex) girlfriend's grandma and met her whole family on this side.

All of them, the uncles, the aunts, the cousins of all age and gender, all of them told me about the legendary mashed potato that the grandma does. How good it is, how they can't reproduce it, and how the grandma has never told the recipe to anyone ever. A mystery, a secret she's going to take to the grave!

And like, it's a very good mashed potato. The recipe is simple, you boil some big potato, then you mash them with salt, pepper, herbes de Provence (a mix used almost everywhere in the south of france made of rosemary, oregano, thyme, basil, chervil, tarragon, bay leaf, fennel, marjoram, sage, and wild thyme), a good chunk of butter and a dollop of olive oil.

I know because she was very happy to show me how it's done when I, alone, went to help her in the kitchen (:
