I have a particular affection for the ways non-cultural designs & choices can create cultural artifacts. Anyone remember ToHeart2?

An ero visual novel coming in at the tail end of the VN era Tokimeki Memorial ushered in 1994 and Kanon crystalized in 1999, it was released in December of 2004 and was the ‘it’ game of its genre for the next year. It got an anime release in 2005, spin-off games, OVA’s, drama CD’s, the works. It was really big at Comiket in the next year, selling ‘image CDs’ of risque art, promotional manga, and a…car billboard?

ToHeart2 did not last though. Its known among visual novel fans for sure, but it's currently ranked #609th on Visual Novel Database in popularity - totally respectable, but no one is recommending it today as the “oh you gotta play this” game and if you aren’t into visual novels it is not coming up in your day-to-day anime-fandom conversations the way Clannad or Doki Doki Literature Club is. It had its era and the fandom moved on, like almost any other property.

But I bet way more people have encountered it than they know, because something else was released pretty much right after ToHeart2 was, in May of 2005 to be precise:

Oh yeah, this is that kind of essay. Danbooru is the original ‘successor’ to the 2ch-style imageboards that was art-first, non-hierarchical, and easily searchable, making it absolutely perfect for porn. The style quickly swept the competition and for a while Danbooru, and its architecture-clones like Gelbooru, ruled the hentai roost on the internet. If it's the year 2010 and you want some pics of Asuka in a school uniform stepping on you, Danbooru was your very first stop.

How you found those pictures is important here; Danbooru is 99% of the time used via searching for tags. Those who don’t have an account - aka most users - can only search by two tags, so you do the best you can; to take the above prompt you go “soryuu_asuka_langley stepped_on” and bam:

Only 4 results, are you kidding me?? Jesus get it together ero artists, some low hanging fruit here. Let's go with something more popular:

There we go, “red_hair school_uniform”, that is more like it. Okay, so sometimes you want Sailor Pluto + Zettai Ryuoiki or bust and you are gonna get what you are gonna get with those search terms, but other times you are exploring, you wanna see what you will find, any red-head will do, and you get this absolute sea of results. What are your options for navigating it?

Pretty…basic, right? And you can’t easily narrow down your search, you only get two search terms. So you do what comes natural, you look at each page, select out images you like, and hit next. But that is…a lot of pages, you aren’t going to read them all.

A funny thing about UI design is that if a button exists, humans are going to press it. We are just inherently curious, we want to try things. And this UI essentially gives us three buttons: “First”, “Next”, and ….“Last”, in this case Page 43654. So as you are building your stache of auburn-topped white button-ups, you are gonna click Page 1, then Page 2, then Page 3…and at some point your curiosity will get the better of you, and you are gonna click Last

And the posts are organized chronologically by order of submission. You get it now, right?

For large searches, which the two-tag cap encourages users to do, Danbooru’s UI gives you the option of showing you the *latest* posts…and the *first posts ever submitted to Danbooru*. If its 2013 you are not gonna stumble on anything from 2008 without actively looking for it, but there is always a button flashing in your face to show you every post from 2005.

When ToHeart2 was the most popular ero game around.

As you can bet Danbooru on opening day was flooded with ToHeart2 images. It generated so much content applicable to this site concept too - it's a split path harem game! Look at these girls:

You got your big titty red-head, white-haired soft kuudere, your lolis your genki’s, this is the OVA so it isn’t even all of them; option coverage is the point of these games. And it clocks in at, help me out here VNDB…

55 hours are you fucking kidding me?! This is the Anna Karenina of visual novels, this work is someone’s magnum opus, my god. Point is it had a lot of art - and you add in the anime, the Comiket CD’s, the promotionals, the manga, the doujin, its a lot. Wait, I don’t have to guess:

Its 6.2k images worth of ecchi art as of today. Every single ‘basic category’ search term people would commonly use had some ToHeart2 character in it, stored at the back of the history log. Far beyond its popularity as a visual novel, due to the inherent UI design of the site, anime fans got all the ToHeart2 porn they could handle just organically. And as time went on the ‘gap’ in between today and 2005 grew, cementing this little cultural artifact in place. Obviously other works from 2005 got similarly cemented, ToHeart2 is just the most prominent one to me.

I love how some of them have their context just buried in there too, like this one I pulled from the site:

This is the cover of a Comiket 70 doujin collection - actually a mix of characters, not ToHeart2-specific - by doujin group Spread-Pink, a talented group; something the median non-Japanese searcher saving this to their hard drive would have no clue about. Here is a link to the full doujin, it has Haruhi SOS Brigade propaganda, absolutely choice. This is of course a trait inherent to a lot of the older art on the internet - so much of it was taken, often without attribution or with edits, from random professional-adjacent works and repurposed into the context the internet needed it to be. Today the internet of Japan & the West is way more merged, and tracing back an image is way easier, but in the early days it was anarchy, and so early Danbooru is full of that, in comparison to the modern uploads.

And yes I cropped the image here, but it was for sizing purposes I swear, don’t judge me, the full one is in the link!

I do have one more reveal before I wrap this up, however - I have been lying to you. I doctored that Danbooru screenshot up there, because that isn’t how the search in Danbooru looks today. It looks like this:

Yup, the Last Page button is gone. I pulled a screenshot from the Wayback Machine for the edit, I am not sure when it vanished but I think it is sometime around 2015? Now this phenomenon lasted longer than that - at that time Danbooru clone Gelbooru had grown to higher popularity due to ease of use but imported all of Danbooru’s content including its chronology meta-data when it was made in 2007, and it kept the button. Gelbooru grew to such sizes that in the late 2010’s however, if you try to hit Last Page on a large enough search, you get:

Alas, a pagination cut-off (unless you upgrade your account, which is like paying for WinRAR).

So this isn’t a present cultural artifact, but a past one - a generation of internet users for a decade+ had privileged access to the ToHeart2 Hentai Collection, but in the 2020’s it's gone now, lowered down to equality with every other historical work. Alas ToHeart2, your reign was brief but beautiful, and may we all hope for an elysian future where Danbooru re-implements the Last Page button and your rule is restored.

There was no latent natural chakra here. The air and environment were dry as a bone, meaning the only chakra he had access to was the stuff produced on his own. Kakashi is not entirely sure what impact this will have on the 1000 or so ninjutsu he has memorised. He suspects it might increase the chakra cost of external and area affecting ninjutsu. Any jutsu that relied on there being natural chakra present in the environment to supplement the user’s own chakra would be harder. So, no large destructive or transformative ninjutsu. No earthquakes or earth walls, no freezing large bodies of water or creating whirlpools, most wind techniques would be out. Fireballs should be okay as they relied primarily on the shinobi’s chakra pool, but controlling large quantities of fire would be tricker. The same reasoning applied to lighting techniques, chidori would work fine but anything bigger might cause some strain. As long as he wasn’t aiming to wipe out a Division’s worth of enemies, he probably wouldn’t notice the limitation. Large-scale destructive ninjutsu had never been a specialty of his anyway. And he still has chakra to reinforce his body alongside genjutsu, taijutsu and the sharingan.

Well, he is pretty sure he still has the sharingan …

The only way to confirm his theories was to do some field testing.

Thus, Kakashi waits for Iori to do her final rounds and, just before the night shift starts, he ducks out of his room. It is at this time that the nurses would be at their most unobservant, tired out by ten hours of work. It is late in the evening, meaning most of the hospital staff have left the building. It makes it ridiculously easy to steal down the halls, unnoticeable even in spaces lit by bight florescence.

After discovering that a Quirk Registry was a literal list of bloodline abilities stored on a digital database accessible to any medical professional, Kakashi has decided to stop applying Konoha’s information security standards to the hospital. He is still a little weirded out by his execution of what was probably the easiest heist of medical information he had ever carried out.

A few days of stalking Doctor Wada around the hospital at opportune intervals led to him discovering the man’s office. After that Kakashi hides in a corner and watches the man work. Because no one here had any sense of environment/spatial awareness, he has no trouble keeping in the man’s blind spot even with a limp. Thus, he can memories how the doctor goes about updating his patient information, which is all digital and stored on the computer, involving a passcode, a name and navigating through several screens worth of readouts and icons; all of which were infinity easier to understand when compared with the readouts produced by the computers in Konoha’s research division, encoded as they all were. Three days later and he has access to all his medical files and the files of every one of Wada’s other patients.

Tonight, Kakashi has the time to properly read them. Hopefully, there would be no complications with his eye, and he could clear himself for experimentation. His chakra levels were good enough for it.

Kakashi scrolls through his report, committing the information to memory, eyeing the many notes on his physical and mental wellbeing, listing his various broken bones, sprains, and other injuries, most of which Kakashi is aware of, all of which were well on their way to recovery.

'...Early concerns expressed over collapse of right lung and damage to respiratory system are being reassessed due to passive accelerated regeneration....'

Ah yes, he vaguely remembers something going straight through his chest during the fight. He examines the surgeon's notes which recommend close monitoring and an extended hospital stay alongside various medications.

'...Additional concerns over potential complications due to prior injuries/scarring (see attached report)....’

Hmm, he skims over a note describing older scaring around his chest. The report has flagged quite a few of his past scars and bone breaks as concerning and evidence of past physical stress involving combat. Not too far off the truth. Something to keep in mind if they ever asked him about his past. Honestly, he is somewhat impressed by the thoroughness of the report and the efforts gone through to keep him healthy. Linked is to medical notes are details of the two surgeries he had undergone while unconscious alongside various other actions the hospital had taken in their bid to keep him alive.

‘Primary quirk factor confirmed by the patient as single-ocular quirk ‘sharingan’ located in the left eye. Quirk most likely to be a passive emitter type with line of sight or eye contact as an activation requirement. Quirk effect is unknown. ‘Sharingun’ was restored during surgy under the supervision of Sueno Manzo and predicted to retain its function upon recovery barring further complication.’

‘Patient exhibits the symptoms of memory loss, apathy, and confusion suggesting a case of post-traumatic amnesia. If quirk has a memory storage function as is typical of ocular quirks then there may be a link between the quirk effect, damage to eye, and memory loss symptoms. Diagnosis requires a second opinion. Requested consolation with Neurologist and Ocular-Quirk Specialist still pending.'

‘Secondary quirk or mutation factor ‘regeneration’ increases patient’s metabolism and bodily functions, resulting in increased cell repair and recovery. Without a baseline for recovery speed predicted recovery timeframe is unknown.’

Well, ‘predicted to retain its function’ was good enough. All the major concerns raised by the doctor were linked to memory loss that didn’t exist. Kakashi ducks out of the office, heading back to his room. It was interesting to know that his recovery rate was considered abnormally fast. Fast enough to be considered a ‘quirk’ in its own right. No doubt a side effect of chakra use. It was a well-known fact that shinobi with developed coils recovered from injuries faster than civilians.

He would have to keep this in mind when engaging the locals in combat. The people here would have slower recovery rates when compared with Konoha’s civilians, who still had chakra even if their coils were underdeveloped. He wouldn’t want to accidentally kill someone misjudging their ability to heal from an injury.

With patience born from his many years of field experience, Kakashi waits for the next shift change before sneaking out once more. His destination is the hospital’s roof. Guarded by one solitary security camera- which he had disabled two days ago and had yet to be fixed- it is the only place he can go and be reasonably sure not to be disturbed for any length of time. Generally, cameras were pretty useless against any shinobi who could pull off an academy level transformation or a basic genjutsu. Even when the cameras were hidden, most shinobi moved too fast to be reliably picked up on film. He is not sure if that reasoning applied here, seeing as the technology was significantly more advanced. Regardless, as he was recovering and conserving both energy and chakra, avoiding them is his best bet. Most of the cameras he notes are on the outside of the building, placed in plain sight with no care taken to keep them hidden. He wonders if there is a purpose to that. Enforcement of compliance through a display of observation? Are they decoys and there is additional security hidden somewhere he wouldn’t think to look? Is he falling into some sort of trap sneaking around so obviously and gathering information? It was hard to answer these questions when he has no baseline to draw from. As he had yet to see evidence of extensive security or traps in the building he is proceeding with his plan.

It is early morning when he ducks out onto an empty roof, having stolen the key from what he thinks are the hospital's maintenance lockers the day prior. The air outside is cool, devoid of the stench of disinfectant that had been clogging his nose for the last few weeks. He hated how smell played havoc on his sensitive nose, blocking his sinuses.

Shielded on one side by a taller, windowless section of the building he has a good view of a wide two-lane road where the occasional vehicle would enter or exit the building. At night the area is quiet save for the hum of a distant activity, probably more of the engine-run vehicles, which were irritatingly noisy and commonly used by the people here.

The sky above him begins to lighten. Soon the sun would peak between the tall glass-covered buildings opposite the hospital. The artificial structures shimmer, reflecting the whitening sky. A trip into the busier sections of the ‘city’ is still impending, all his attention being focused on scouting the hospital and absorbing as much information about the place as possible first.

The first test he does is an attempt at summoning his nin-dogs. He has a few ideas on how he might reverse summon himself between worlds or, at the very least, send a message to let people know he was still alive.

Quickly, he bites his thumb, crouches, touching the roof with his palm and pumping in the required amount of chakra. For a second, he thinks it might work. Lines of inked fuinjutsu characters blossom under his palm, spiralling outward, absorbing the chakra. However, instead of activating in a puff of summoning smoke, the energy disperses, sinking into the dead, chakra-less concrete, the seal failing. Frowning, he uses the remaining blood on his thump to sketch out a simple storage array. It activates, sealing in a loose piece of brick without a problem. No, it wasn’t the fuinjutsu that had failed but the nin-dog summoning specifically. There went that plan.

Somewhat disheartened, he begins unbandaging the left side of his head. Just as the sunlight begins to peak between the buildings opposite, he opens the sharingan.

The chakra drain creeps up as the world around him snaps into sharp focus. Every crack in the brick, every mote of dust, every wisp of cloud, is clearly outlined even as colour is dulled to increase contrast. Kakashi glances around and waits, letting the image of the foreign skyline burn into his brain to be forever stored and remembered in crisp detail.

After a few seconds without significant pain, he lets out a long breath and prepares for the mental strain of activating the Kamui Sharingan. The process brings with it flashes of memory, Obito’s scared face twisted with hate, and a blurry battle. The memories were all faint and far off despite having the Sharingan active at the time. He rubs his chest in discomfort. He thinks he knows who might have stabbed him now. Obito…He releases a tired breath and shoves all the uncomfortable revelations off to the side where they wouldn’t bother him. There would be plenty of time to ruminate at a later.

Kakashi lets the first stage of Kamui activate, making sure there is nothing in his eyeline. He doesn’t want to accidentally destroy the stairway that led back into the hospital by sucking it into a different dimension. After confirming that the technique is stable and the charka drain is manageable, be prepares to pull himself through, ignoring the beginnings of a faint headache. Despite it being a brand new technique, Kakashi is nothing if not a master at reverse engineering ninjutsu on the fly to suit his own needs. The world warps and shimmers, his chakra levels take a nosedive, and his eye aches.

A field of unmarked stone appears in place of the hospital roof, displacing tall buildings with uniform blocks of grey, white and black. An eternal, unchanging landscape, dimly lit despite there being no light source, stretches out in all directions. The Kamui no Jikūkan, time–space dimension. There is no signs of destruction or the battle he now vaguely remembers occurring before he had been ripped away from the Elemental Nations altogether. He wishes he could recall how it had ended. Had Obito re-joined the fight with Madara? He hopes not. He hopes he at least managed to take Obito out and give his allies a better chance. Obito was his burden to shoulder after all.

As he tries to dig up something useful from his patchwork of memories relating to his battle with Obito, a faint secondary chakra source catches his attention. The thread of chakra is distance, connecting to something very far off. Obito’s eye? A lingering connection between the two eyes was the only thing that made any sort of sense. He vaguely remembers how he had been in the process of activating the Kamui no Jikūkan when the area had been flooded with demonic chakra.

This is good…If it is Obito, and Obito is still in the Elemental Nations, then he might be able to reverse the collection and pull himself back. The only problem with this plan was that he would need the same amount of chakra to return or risk killing himself. In other words, he needs a lot of chakra. Far more than he has or will ever have access to naturally. As he is the only being with chakra here, this is a problem.

Kakashi lets out another tried breath, “Always a problem…” the area around him remains silent. He knows the theory behind chakra draining and collecting seals. With a bit of patience and self-discipline, he would be able to slowly build up and store the chakra needed to return.

Well, he would definitely be breaking his record for lateness by a long shot. He runs calculations and comes up with a depressing year-long wait time. And that was if he dumped every ounce of his chakra into the seal the moment he got it. Obviously, that would turn him into a comatose vegetable and, as nice as he thinks these people are, he doesn’t trust them to look after his unconscious body for a year. So, it would be double, maybe even triple, that time.

Three years of waiting in this weird unknown word unless someone on the other end of the connection figured out how to bring him back. He had seen Naruto pull of miracles before so…maybe there was hope? Though, everyone might just think he had died given how badly injured he had been just before his disappearance. If that were the case, then no one was coming for him and he would be on his own for the foreseeable future.

“Mah, what a pain.”

He crouches examining one of the plain blocks, massaging the area around his eye. It stings and he is beginning to feel chakra fatigued. He can almost imagine the familiar names of the memorial stone etched into its surface. By the time he returned, the fourth great war would be well and truly over, assuming time moved at a similar speed between here and there. He supposed it was fitting. He wouldn’t be Kakashi if he didn’t let the people he cared about down one last time.

He lets out a long sigh and reverses the Kamui technique, letting himself fade back to his new world and reality.

The chakra exhaustion hits him like a landslide and he stumbles onto one knee. His eye, which had been aching since he initiated the Kamui no Jikūkan, is now wet. The wetness turns out to be blood, which is pooling like tears and running down the left side of his face.

Maybe he had been pushing it, using the full Kamui after wasting a bunch of chakra on summoning when he had barely been at half his capacity to start. That, and he was obviously still healing.

Blearily, Kakashi wipes his face with the back of his hand heaving himself back upright. He has dealt with way worse. With one last glance at the sun now shining brightly from between the strange buildings of his new temporary home, he heads back inside to find something sterile to clean his eye with.

He collapses back into his hospital bed where he causes a stir as the nurse checking in on him notices the blood soaking through his hastily applied bandages. He lets them fuss in contemplative silence.

When is it Time for a Website Refresh?

You’ve heard the old adage… You have 6 seconds to convince a website visitor that your website is the website they’ve been searching for – before they hit that back button.

So keeping your website up-to-date is no longer a matter of preference, it’s a matter of survival.

If it’s been a while since you’ve updated your website, it might be a good idea to consider updating the elements on your website like the content, the design, adding new content or completely overhauling your website as part of a major redesign.

A business changes as it grows. The same is true with your website. As you create your website, make sure it reflects the business it represents.

Here are 7 ways you can refresh your website

1. The Basics

Let’s start with the basics. The look and feel of your website can be dramatically updated simply by choosing a more modern fonts set to revamp its overall look. Even small changes can significantly impact transforming an old site into something new and impressive. Google fonts is free, and offers many great options.

2. Consider a redesign – when you need more than the basics

Your website plays a big part in the identity of your business. The way your website looks will have a big impact on the way your visitors feel when they land on your website. What will their first impression be? Are they going to want to do business with you? You are not doing yourself any favors by still using outdated stock graphics and imagery.

Your brand’s identity is shaped by elements like layout, fonts, colors, etc. To keep your website looking crisp, determine which sections have aged gracefully and which areas need improvement.

Replace your outdated images & graphics with a mix professionally taken photos of your staff and business along with some carefully curated high end stock images.

Choose a simple, clean font will make your site look sleek and modern. For example, Google Fonts offers many free typefaces.

An updated color palette can also improve the experience of your visitors.

3. Improve Your Communication

We’ve talked about the 6 seconds you have to grab your visitors attention and keep them on your website so it’s not a surprise that there’s little time for you to get your message across.

Regardless of what you sell, the customer is primarily interested in how you will help them solve their problem. It’s always about them, whatever you say. So make sure visitors can find the content they are looking for without a lot of clicking around.

Speaking of communication it’s a good idea to sprinkle in a variety of compelling and relevant CTAs on your site. Believe it or not, your visitors aren’t mind readers so you need to tell them how they take the next step. CTAs provide various options for the visitor to take action, such as:

“Join Now by clicking here,”

“Get started Today”

“Connect with us Today”

“Get your free ______ today”

“Signup today and get ________ “

And don’t forget about social sharing buttons.

The most important thing is that your CTA’s should be well-designed and strategically placed in areas where clients can easily see them.

Pro tip: Make sure that your CTA’s contrast well with the rest of your design but don’t get blend into the rest of your content. CTA’s are most effective when they look like buttons.

4. Improve Your User Experience

You must design your website so that the customer can navigate through it quickly. Your site will attract more visitors if it is easy to navigate. Just a few changes to your menu and checking that every link works can make a massive difference in the over all user experience.

Your navigation consists of links connecting your website’s pages. Carefully examine all your website pages and make sure they are still relevant and organized.

Test your links. Make sure that they don’t lead to 404 Error (Page Not Found). This makes your website appear not maintained and sloppy. Take a look at all the links on your site, including internal and external, and ensure they’re taking your visitors where you want them to go.

5. Analyze Your Website Content – And See Where You Stand

It’s not only about looks when it comes to refreshing a website. Your site must be considered current. Ensuring that what you are saying is valid, helpful, and readable to your visitors. So how can you determine whether your content is new, high-quality, and up-to-date?

By conducting a content audit.

A content audit is intended to assess which links get indexed by search engines, which need to be refreshed and no longer exist. Here are some basic steps you need to follow:

Compile all your databases and sitemaps. The sitemap is a document that lists your site’s pages, videos, and other files along with their relationships. Data from your website is organized into your website’s internal database.

Your site’s URLs are indexed by web crawlers who collect content throughout the Internet. An algorithm can be applied to web crawler data to find relevant links in response to specific search terms and keywords. We recommend using Google Analytic, Google Webmaster Tools, and Screaming Frog for crawling website content.

Content auditing can go beyond essentials: You can use titles, descriptions, and word count as primary criteria for content auditing. All of your content entries should contain these elements.

Take a good thorough look at your content: Identity what content no longer reflects your current business and goals and delete it. Do you need to rewrite or update anything? Is there anything that needs some attention?

Note: It is essential to perform two separate content audits if your website has Desktop and Mobile versions as their codebases are different.

When I started a recs list, everybody's were hand-coded html lists on their websites. Livejournal changed that, and popularized recs lists far more by removing the biggest barriers to participation, the need for webhosting and the need to code html. But livejournal was far from an ideal situation for a recs database, as it didn’t have tags for the greater part of its existence. Many people’s recs journals were simply filled with posts that started with a list of which fandoms were represented within; many didn’t contain a masterlist and were hence not searchable. Fandom-wide resources Crack Van (where reccers could sign up for a week or month at a time to represent their favorite fandom, pairing, or subgenre with curated recs and introductory blurbs) and Recs Rainbow (a blog that maintained an index of self-submitted fandom reccers and when they were updated with what) also came into existence. Navigating these resources in search of new recs lists for a new fandom was itself a big task, but they still made everything a great deal easier, because navigating the maze of personal blogs and fic posted directly to topical communities all over the site, + fic posted to smaller archives and personal sites, was still very difficult - arguably more difficult in some fandoms, because finding fic meant performing keyword searches for communities, paging back through their entire catalogs of entries, surfing from person to person. Delicious.com, with its revolutionary tag sorting that went beyond the individual user account, became the best place to find and search for fic very quickly. Suddenly you could look at the most recent bookmarks from other people in real time for any pairing you could think of - although without standardized tags, they weren’t all the bookmarks for the fandom; for that you had to surf around between different bookmarkers’ accounts using their networks, or find them by clicking on popular stories to see who else had bookmarked them and going to each person’s account. External bookmarking services still rely on the user to fill in all the info, though, so not every bookmark is equally informative - warnings, ratings, summaries, even author names or story lengths, or more importantly, the fact that something was still a work in progress, could easily be missing from the bookmark. In some ways - like the automatic inclusion of the author's headers - AO3 is already an improvement on Delicious. In others, it’s a pretty drastic step backwards - like the fact that you can’t follow a particular user’s bookmarks, or see whose bookmarks they follow. Right now AO3 is primarily adapted for saving your own bookmarks, for which purpose it’s quite useful; and the archive itself and its search filters already let you discover new fic with much more ease than the previous disconnected systems ever did; but they miss an essential function of recs lists, which is: they weren’t just for finding any fic, they were an aid in narrowing down the field of fic to ones you might be more likely to enjoy: the recommendation part. Simply the fact that someone, or several someones, has recommended a thing before isn’t the same as getting a recommendation from someone whose taste you already know is like yours in some respect. Sorting the search results by number of kudos or bookmarks is only going to give you the Billboard Top Whatever list, while reccers are djs, curators of content. And as the recent discussion of exposing bookmarker-side tags as a provider of content warnings show - particularly for racism and other issues where the creator may be unaware or not want to tag correctly - AO3 has the potential to create new functionalities with tags that could do things we've never been able to do before. A simple 'hot right now' or 'trending recently' algorithm like the ones used at Ravelry and Pinboard's Recent Fandom Bookmarks page (which doesn't work, because of the fandom exodus away from Pinboard, but was a great idea) could make it much more efficient to check out recent significant developments in a fandom, for example. My present workaround is to use the works search, filter by date for things completed or updated within the last (2 weeks, 6 weeks, 1 year, whatever, depending if/when I last looked at the fandom in question) and then sort by descending bookmarks, kudos, or hits. The ability to follow other bookmarkers could let you surf to see what friends of friends are reading and discover new people with congenial taste, which is the best way to receive recs from outside your own fandoms. And if bookmarker tags were or could be exposed when browsing the archive, a highlight color for someone you already follow could allow you to pick out comments that are more likely of interest. Any of that functionality is definitely still in the future, if not a complete pipe dream, and it's quite rightly behind other issues for the people who are coding the archive. A support and feature request person commented on the recent Tumblr discussion that inundating them with duplicate requests would be useless, but someone on the post suggested that using the bookmark tags and bookmark collections functionality more would be the best current step. Of course, I don't know if that person was correct, but I've got nearly 900 bookmarks there, so beginning to tag them strikes me as a fun and exciting (albeit long-term and time-consuming) task.

Okay so, I never realized until it was said by one of my closest friend that I am thriving despite the unfair circumstances given for me.

I don’t even–I can’t even think about it, it’s in me already. I am in love with the word ‘grit’ since I stumbled on it… a pdf file inside an abandoned usb stick.

I told my friend that my PC won’t get on. And he was throttled by the thought of my situation if it were him. He would have been long gone, quitted, abandon the project until sufficiently filled by work preference.

The details ensue: I have no UTP cable (an internet wire especially designed to connect with the modem for faster speeds), I only have a defective wifi adapter. It turns off frequently, high fluctuations, long disconnections, I can’t even play a single dota/valorant game. Glady music’s with me, youtube’s buffering is quite good.

Then my PC faces ‘the blue screen of death,’ my C drive is almost full. And I almost broke my CPU (heart of the computer) due to lack of maintenance. No change of thermal paste for almost two months. The CPU literally merged with the fan that when I pulled it, the CPU came off. Can’t even get them separated without a blade cutting through the middle with a tint of alcohol.

One bent pin of the CPU, and you’re pretty much done. It is considered broken, it is broken, it wont function no more. That is how fragile it is. I never said this part though. Never announced it.

What my friend knew were my aimless complaints and tamperings, asking everyone for just a UTP, I am making this for them, they know. They know me. Everyone thanked me, they always do tell me that I owe their lives; when drunk. Words. I never asked too much. Even a glass of water makes someone a King for me.

Now, with my restless aboad for developing a website with an immaculate intent to get it functionable and to whom the users (supposedly my friends) won’t ever complain; I’m using my smart phone. I have no charger, just got broken. The timing is obvious, everything reels to something.

And to which when I prefer using my phone while my PC still functions okay, now it won’t turn on. Right after I am done rearranging, recollecting, retracing, rewriting, reviewing all the informations I took; in order, my PC won’t turn on. We even got a $7 money pool from three users. Hmmm, something is about to come down.

Let me tell you this. I never cared about my circumstances, I only see the means of attaining the result. And the world challenges you from it, if you are worthy of keeping and holding it in control: it is one of those things that will keep the world unbalance. But yes, there is always a way. “You can defeat nature by nurture with a bit of luck.” And to extend that luck is to stay all night long.

My phone is designed for what I do, I redesigned the contents, no miscellaneous unrelated stuff when the status is at work. My social media accounts has notes on how hows, solutions, tips, and life quality tools (easy versions of things that are related to web developing, rendered for begginer’s usage. Giving them a sense of profession by just following instructions.

I filled myself with codes, syntaxs, tags, logical structure, algorithms, database interaction from the frontend; making it a bridge connected to its backend, where users see and input what is required for optional navigation.

Who helped me? A few. Why the majority won’t even pay tribute to what I’m doing for us to sky rocket all together? They want to take the decision from themselves, the decision that triggers from envy. Once I got the contract of what should I really have, they will run towards me and use the word ‘friend’ to coin me out of discourse. While they laugh fully? Bare gums screeching from overt stretches? But their eyes are cold, their sight has purpose, has intent, has weight.

It pierces through familiarity, deny and see hostility. Try and be the headline, cry and be the deceiver, lie and be the suspect, show and be the feast of brutality.

And so.. why should I complain from my circumstances? To which disables my work? They are witnessing my grip, holding no matter the strains. My reasons are valid, true, concise, concrete, material based and sticks with the reality. Unlike them who constantly projects themselves in comparison with me. “Please do not try. You do not know creativity once you can’t make a calculator fron stick and stone.”

I can definitely develop a high demanded modern website through my smart phone. Eventhough people come and go in my room, just like they are cohabitating. Waking me up despite my sweey slumber, pushing me in worry for updates like it is my responsibility to have a result, also knowing my situation… I an object. I am a thing. I am not human for them, I am just a money manufacturing machine.

This runs just like any of our Confessions blogs! Should any users have a problem with how things are going on Sensipets.com, they can safely post here with no threat of being known or harassed.

No one has submitted yet as the site in its newest version is barely 9 months old and the userbase seems to be extremely tiny, but while there is nothing dramatic is currently ongoing, its history has a different story.

Let's take a brief (or not so brief!) look into the history that is Sensipets.

2004 - Sensipets opens, created by Howey and Gmone. This first rendition lasts at least for 3 years until August 2006, before being shut down by two staff members named RedRover and Telefragged. According to Howey, he stepped down due to school being a burden, passing the torch to these two. While he claims there is no reason for them to think ill of him, the last messages from RedRover and Telefragged tell a different story, claiming that the site was finally closed for a variety of reasons, one of them being that Howey and Gmone themselves sabotaged the site and required RedRover to completely recode it from scratch. This was logged both in their final message, as well as the Sensipets FAQ left behind by RedRover. Perhaps the drama has already begun starting here.

According to Howey this was a miscommunication, stating that the database likely failed and destroyed the site. While plausible, this begs the question of why RedRover and Telefragged immediately jumped to the conclusion that they were sabotaged by the original owners. Had Howey and Gmone left with no bad blood, it is remarkably odd that the two later owners would suddenly proclaim that this is what happened and was not simply an accident or failure of a database.

2011 - Sensipets starts anew with a fresh coat of paint by Howey. This rendition seems to go uneventful, but the Wayback Machine only catalogues the last few days, where a final news post states that the site is being shut down as Howey no longer finds himself being a pet site owner, wanting to pursue other goals.

2021 - Sensipets returns! The closed alpha was announced in January and became an open alpha only a month later. While this isn't uncommon, some users from the early alpha period have expressed being discontent with the speed of the site's progress, feeling as though not enough work had been invested in the site before opening, even in its alpha stage. There have been comments located on their social media regarding distaste towards the new pet designs and from a personal viewpoint, we feel that while the art is good, the pets themselves don't lend themselves to establishing a unique style and feel for the website.

Two users who managed to play on the 2011 version stated that more content and activity was present on that version in the same time the 2021 alpha has existed. Members confirm it has remained relatively the same for most of the year, featuring a very simple layout and images that give a little personality to the website, but not enough to create major interest.

Unlike other pet sites, it does come with a mobile option, but whether or not users find it playable is unknown. It features a rather bulky navigation set up similar to Neopets and when testing it ourselves, we found the experience revolting at best. The largest issue seems to be the navigation options which are completely different and unorganized in comparison to its desktop counterpart. This may be a work in progress, but given the current speed of the site's progress, its polished state may be long in the future.

As far as we know, Howey is the only programmer on site, contributing to the slow progression of both. It is unknown if there is intention to hire more staff or if the current staff is being paid.

Browsing the forums, it is pretty clear the site has a very slow start. There is a tremendous lack of content and a very tiny active userbase that comment more in the bug section of the forums than the other 9 boards with a whopping 126 topics.

A strange set of 'features' of the website is the ability to buy from a cash shop. While this is not uncommon for pet sites today, this is a rocky stance for a website announcing itself as in alpha. Many gamers of all kinds of genres have expressed a universal opinion that if a game is in alpha, it should not contain a cash shop or subscription. Sensipets offers both.

There is a chance that this is their way of obtaining income for the site's progression instead of a Kickstarter. Pet site Kickstarters have had a rough history with their ability to promise and then deliver poorly. Whether or not this was a smart decision on Sensipets' part has yet to be seen.

From the features the subscription provides, we can't help but imagine it's going to attract negative attention. Users who subscribe are able to own double the amount of pets, inventory space, and a set of 'pots' available for a gardening game on site.

This is a very generous portion of features to offer to subscribers, but there is no indication of what happens to those pets, pots and inventory space if the user stops subscribing for any reason. According to their ToS, users are not allowed to have multiple accounts. In contrast, Neopets allows one extra pet, and should a user unsubscribe, they are allowed to move it to another account.

It is unknown if subscribers are allowed to access items from the cash shop free of charge, but if Sensipets is going in the direction of mobile games, it is likely that even subscribers will be forced to pay more to enjoy more.

We're not sure what audience the site is looking to attract, but it will likely be a mix of minors and older adults looking to recapture the nostalgia of early Neopets. The homepage advertises "game play with elements of education and real-life progress", but we have no clue what this means. If it is aimed at a younger audience, the presence of a cash shop and subscription option may not make the site appealing to parents. Given the near silence of Neopets' Premium boards, it is likely it will not be appealing to older players either.

For now, time will tell whether or not Sensipets becomes a part of the sudden influx of new pet sites in a post-pandemic world and even more time will tell whether or not it can hold its own against similar sites such as Lorwolf, Flight Rising, Subeta, Dappervolk and Marapets.
