Conner Kent in Suicide Squad/the Infinite Frontier era: wtf is going on

Alright lads hello I just need to type out some theories/thoughts about what’s going on with my boy Kon right now. This is more for myself than anything else (just trying to organize my thoughts) but since some of y’all like to hear me talk about comics (and some of this discussion has already been happenin in my inbox) I figured i’d format it and put it on here too! its like 4k words and written over the last few days mostly at 3am. sorry <3

Also fair warning that like, I can be wrong and misinterpret things just as much as anyone else can, like I use panels to support why I think what I do but a lot of this stuff is subjective/complicated to understand so like... in general somethings should be taken with a grain of salt, especially because exactly what changes to the universe were made by Death Metal/Infinite Frontier haven’t been super super clearly defined yet. Also sometimes comic writers make the most random nonsensical shit happen, so I as a fan am also allowed to theorize about random nonsensical shit.

But to start: let’s backtrack!

Many months ago when Infinite Frontier was first announced they dropped some promotional art, and I remember being a little confused because. Well:

Notice how Conner is back to his Teen Titans 2003 look up top, but in his YJ 2019 look at the bottom? This seemed weird to me! But then they announced that Conner would be part of the Suicide Squad ongoing title, in the T-shirt look, so I wrote this discrepancy off in my brain as ‘oh I guess that cover was just the last hurrah for punk Kon’ and moved on with life.

In Suicide Squad right away we learn he’s very much so there against his will:

Which corroborates more or less what we were also shown in Future State: Suicide Squad, although admittedly it tells... a slightly different version of the events. When I first saw both of these together I just chalked it up to being a bit inaccurate as it’s shown as a memory in Future State:

Issue 2 we saw him in action with the Squad, trying to do his best to still be a hero despite the team, but things get a little more interesting in the following issue. It starts off with an account of his history

This page gave me a few immediate red flags, mostly minor things that had to do with coloring, so more irl problems than things to take seriously in-universe (Kon’s pants are the wrong color in the first Superboy shot, and Bart’s Impulse costume is in Kid Flash colors instead of the correct Impulse ones) but then also it just bugged me the phrasing “he joined Young Justice” when he was a founder of the team, he didn’t join it he made it with Tim and Bart.

But again, chalked that stuff up to just.... writers/artists being inconsistent/unaware of things that they should be aware of, or even Nocturna just not being specific with details. But it did still strike me as a little odd considering the very accurate use of villains in those same shots, Scavenger who was a reoccurring bad guy from Kon’s solo days and showed up basically nowhere else (even holding the Spear of Lono and everything!) and Billy/Harm (Greta’s brother) from Young Justice.

But then a few pages later we got this:

Which is interesting. My first instinct was to think he’s being drugged w kryptonite or something thats leaving him hazy/out of it, but my thoughts on that have kinda changed, we’ll get there in a bit. But in general the context of ‘something’s wrong’ made the slight discrepancies on some details of his own history make more sense.

I also want to then bring up the next part to this story, the crossover issue in Teen Titans Academy.

So a few things. Does it feel weird to anyone else that Conner Kent, a known previous Titan who literally has a framed picture of himself in a case there, would set off alarm sensors like that? Wouldn’t he be... recognized as a Titan not an intruder by their sensors? Interesting! Anyways.

He looks really pained looking at that picture, and sad, and almost frustrated, which ya know makes sense and hurts my heart because he misses them! He misses his friends and being happy.

But, importantly for a criticism I wanna make thats less theory related and more just me bein annoyed at Tim Sheridan, that’s a picture of Conner. Right there. That’s Superboy, on display at Teen Titans Academy, so the people who frequent this building would know who he is and what he looks like and be able to recognize him, he’s even in the same outfit and everything. Alinta recognized him at the end of Suicide Squad #3.

So why does only one person during this big fight then comment on his presence?? Why doesn’t it get a bigger reaction???

And after the fight we don’t see any on panel moment of Wallace going up to the staff Titans (who weren’t present for the fight) and saying like “HEY NIGHTWING UHHH SUPERBOY WAS WITH THE SUICIDE SQUAD?” we just see him talking with his friends upset about Crush leaving. We see Alinta talking to them but we don’t see the exact dialogue. So I do just wanna take the writer by the shoulders and shake him a little bit and ask WHY because that just feels like... something you’d wanna address on panel! This is like the first time since joining the squad that Kon’s at all in contact with people from his life before Waller got involved, I feel like not addressing those people’s reactions to it/not discussing it at least a little bit on panel (especially when Conner CAME UP in the previous TTA issue, Dick brought him up and everything!!!) is a really odd choice. Maybe it’ll happen next issue and i’m just impatient, but who knows. Anyways, gripes with Sheridan aside, lets move on.

I wanna bring up how Conner... doesn’t really respond to Wallace’s question? At all? Except to just fight him off, not even an attempt at a ‘Sorry’ or anything? (the ‘Ha! That all you got?!’ seems to be coming from Culebra not Conner, although the placement of the bubble is vague enough it could be that it was supposed to be Conner? but it seems more like what she’d say, especially as she’s grabbing Emiko like that) That just feels weird. It feels off. In general he speaks so little in Suicide Squad #3 and this issue. Tbh it almost feels like he doesn’t really recognize Wallace which I mean I suppose they never exactly met (they would have theoretically during Death Metal, basically all past/present Titans were together for a while during that), but Kon’s been back in existing long enough he’d have a sense of who current heroes are anyways.

But right, so, lots of little things that feel weird... that gets us caught up to the most recently released comics... but in this household we look at solicits as they drop. Which gives us some info on what’s coming up a few months ahead of time, albeit without full context obviously. Issues #4 and #5 don’t mention Conner in their descriptions or show him on the covers at all, because there’s just other plot things going on, so ya know seems things will be quiet for him for a bit.

But then we got the August solicitations and oh BOY it’s a doozey for him! And some things start to kinda connect perhaps!

I want to just take a moment to look at that specific wording. “The teen calling himself Conner Kent” I’m probably reading too much into it but that feels deliberate, like why wouldn’t you just say ‘Conner Kent’? Usually these kinds of descriptions are trying to keep a low word count, not add in extra words that don’t need to be there. It makes it feel like that’s a name he’s using that... doesn’t actually belong to him.

So the theory I want to propose (that has been floating around already) is that based on these covers and the description, and how the Conner we’ve been seeing in Suicide Squad apparently talks about his own personal history like he’s ‘reading a wikipedia entry’ and had little response to people he should be aware of like Wallace and apparently isn’t recognized as a Titan through a bio-scan and also bearing in mind those initial promo arts with two separate looks at the same time for him... I think we're looking at a situation where the Conner in Suicide Squad so far has actually been a clone of original Conner (like... like he’s Match 2.0 or somethin) the whole time, that’s just not aware he’s not the original.

Now that’s the base theory I wanna work with and build off of, but there’s MANY different directions that could go in/ways that could work.

For example, one idea is that the Conner we saw in #1 who was chained up is the original Conner, and he’s been being cloned and held captive, so everything else with Conner in Suicide Squad so far has been this Match 2.0

Another idea could be the original Conner in #1 is also the Conner in #2 who Waller had then commented wasn’t ready during the mission in Arkham and had zapped with a lil Kryptonite, and after that moment she took him off the field because his spirit hadn’t been broken enough to be obedient (as he was a lot quieter in Issue #3 & the TTA crossover compared to #2, and #3 is when the Nocturna thing with the history happened)

Or it could even be original Conner in #1, then in #2 was one clone that wasn’t ‘ready’ that after that point she stopped using him, and switched to a diff clone for #3, because like that first cover did show a LOT of clones. That could be more just ‘artistic interpretation’ or something, covers sometimes do exaggerate/mislead, but it also could indicate we’re looking at a lot of clones.

With all of those in mind I also wanna bring up this little bit from Future State Suicide Squad:

Again Future State is a ‘possible future’ so stuff from it isn’t set in stone, but the idea of ‘she still has his YJ 2019 outfit somewhere’ makes me think it could be something along the lines of like, Clone!Conner finds original Conner and frees him and he gets back his YJ outfit, which could lead to like the imagery on that variant cover/the idea from my very first part of this post where I was talking about Kon being shown in both outfits in different places.

Alternatively entirely from all that, another option is that she maybe got ahold of what was needed to clone Kon, but doesn’t even have the original Kon in her possession. (again with the Future State thing, she could be lying since elsewhere in Future State we did also see a copy of YJ 2019 Kon’s costume in one of the Jon-focused Future State comics in a display case 🤷‍♂️) Which could also lead to that confrontation on the variant cover & the promo art thing... and could also explain why we have seen nothing about anyone looking for him, because in that sort of scenario he wouldn’t have even been missing in the first place.

There’s a lot of possibilities! It’s still too early to solidly know anything, but I feel pretty confident we’re entering another cloning related plot with our Clone Boy so it’s... ya know. Clone time. On the one hand it’s annoying because god we have done clone/multiple Kons plots before. We’ve done them so much.

BUT on the other hand, I think it could be interesting to use this situation to tie into some older stuff from pre-reboot that I can see some connections to, because due to Infinite Frontier altering the world and people’s memories it’s all technically fair game storytelling-wise again (and like, the use of Scavenger specifically in that flashback way above, who’s not a super well known villain in general, makes me think maaaaybe the writer did do some of their Kon homework)

Something also just dawned on me that i’m not quite sure what it means but still is worth mentioning: The Conner here in Suicide Squad is back in his Teen Titans Vol. 3 outfit, and his history as he tells it stops during Teen Titans Vol. 3. And doesn’t... mention when he died? It feels like it... stopped before that, because like I feel if he was telling his life history (even the wiki version LMAO) the part where he died and came back would be pretty important to bring up?? And Nocturna specifically says that he didn’t explain how that stuff from TT Vol. 3 then led to him in his current situation. That’s a pretty big gap (like uhhh everything from resurrection until he got lost on Gemworld + all the rest of the Young Justice 2019 stuff?) So like.. there could be something funky going on here that has to do with that.

Similarly when he flashes back in Future State: Suicide Squad to his past it also goes right from Teen Titans Vol. 3 to the current Suicide Squad run? Like I get it’s one page so they can’t show that much, but the fact that there’s now two places that flash back to that same specific time period and nothing past it until the Suicide Squad feels just... noticeable! Not concretely indicative of something, but noteworthy.

Like...this almost has me thinking maybe it could be something where like, they tampered with his dead body and cloned from that? BECAUSE, for those of you who may not be familiar with how Kon’s resurrection (during Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds) worked, when he came back there was time travel involved! He was brought back to life in the future (like. Legion of Superheroes era) because it was a process that took that thousand or so years to work/heal him (essentially because of his hybrid dna the process that healed Clark when he had died back in Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen in the 90s just took a lot longer, but its the same Kryptonian healing chamber thing) meaning when he came back to the present alive again, his dead body was still also in the present just in it’s process of healing. Meaning especially if we’re bringing back stuff from before the reboot, Kon likely has his dead body just vibing out there while he’s goin around living life 🤷‍♂️

SO them doing something related to that could explain the choice to put him back in the T-shirt (since thats what he wore in the era his brain would be caught up to if we’re relating this to when he died) and why he’d recognize himself in a group photo with Bart, Cassie and Tim but maybe not someone like Wallace who didn’t exist back then. I don’t know, this branch of thought is still half baked. Will maybe come back and elaborate on this later. But I’m now really thinking there might be a connection to the early Teen Titans Vol. 3 era specifically because of it being referenced twice in stuff with this Suicide Squad.

ANYWAYS moving on, this is probably a shot in the dark and I only thought of it because I just was reading 90′s Superboy, but right away when thinking about ‘Amanda Waller’ and ‘Cloning Kon’ I was reminded of some stuff about the circumstances around the first clone that was made of Conner: Match.

(Superboy (1994) #35)

Match was created by an organization called ‘The Agenda’, that was after a while primarily under the control of The Contessa, Lex Luthor’s ex-wife, aided by Amanda Spence who had a personal grudge against Kon bc her dad was Paul Westfield the guy Kon was originally cloned from (before the Lex/Clark retcon). They were the big bad guys of an arc called The Evil Factory in Superboy (where Cadmus personnel got replaced with clones) which also then tied into the Sins of Youth event over in Young Justice (Remember how Match was posing as Superboy for a while there? yeah). After those plot lines finished the Agenda was pretty defeated (Amanda Spence was still out there and came back later but still) and... who got their hands on the remaining Agenda tech?

Why none other than Amanda Waller herself!

If they re-canonized pieces of this (which also tied into Young Justice which ya know, YJ 2019 was all about re-establishing stuff from YJ even before Death Metal happened soooo) it would totally make sense for Waller to have complete access to the exact technology used to clone Conner before.

Now, a thing to consider here though is what happened to Kon after he’d been cloned that first time, where his DNA got all destabilized by the process (and he needed to go through a procedure with Roxy as a genetic template to keep him together, which was how he got stuck at age 16 for a while). This was something where he was fine for a period of time before the side effects began to kick in. Now, I think it’s worth mentioning that was also back in the days where he was not yet Lex & Clark’s clone, but still Paul Westfield’s. So there could easily be a ‘now that certain Kryptonian genes have kicked in as he got his newer powers it doesn’t destabilize him the same way’ reasoning or something along those lines to avoid this problem. Alternatively, it could be an interesting thing to embrace rather than retcon away, especially if we’ve been seeing Clone Conner in action and Original Conner hasn’t been in our focus, things could be wrong with him that we just don’t know about.

Another branch of thinking that I think is even MORE a shot in the dark but could be interesting (or again even related to what I just said, could be a combo of things) is if this somehow ended up related to those clones that were reverse engineered from the remains of Match from the very end of Teen Titans Vol. 3

But like... idk man if Waller got her hands on those corpses or even just the data from Dr. Caligan that he extracted from Match to make them... that could also be a potential way to make some new Conner clones, and that could be why the bio-scan thing at Titans Tower wouldn’t work properly because of the thing he says above about it not being a “complete match’

One thing I don’t think is the case, but has been brought up to me, is stuff with New 52 Kon. I’ve talked extensively about New 52 Kon in recent weeks because I read through all his stuff, but the thing that makes me shy away from him being part of this situation is the fact that... he’s not interchangeable with Kon the way I think some people think he is. He wouldn’t visually be recognized as Original Kon because he is literally on a genetic level a separate person. They’d prob look related, sure, like they’d pass for brothers because they both have Clark’s DNA, but New 52 Kon has Lois’ DNA and Original Kon has Lex’s. New 52 Kon would likely look more like Jon, rather than Kon. Lois specifically commented in an Action Comics issue that Kon had some resemblance to Lex, even. So like, things like Wallace recognizing him or him looking at his own matching reflection alongside the group picture at the Tower... those wouldn’t happen the same way if this was New 52 Kon.

Now I think it coooould theoretically be possible for Waller to have gotten her hands on that future N.O.W.H.E.R.E. cloning tech that had been used to make New 52 Kon, like I wouldn’t rule that out. Because she knows where the remains of their bases are as shown in Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) #16-17, and like, Harvest is dead so she could easily just send teams out there to gather shit if she wanted.

Onto some other things I don’t think are actually related but that I was reminded of/wanted to address:

I feel i’d be a bad timkon fan if during all of this discussion of past stories with cloning Kon I didn’t even bring up Tim’s cloning attempt stuff, but I think it would ultimately be unrelated. His tech was stolen from Luthor, and his attempts didn’t succeed because he was trying to build from scratch without Cadmus’ the data about how they altered the DNA from the original process.

Then that initial cover for the annual really reminded me of part of the Hollow Men story from Superboy Vol. 5 just with like... Kon in a room full of copies of himself. I don’t think this story would be related either because it was more magic Tannarak stuff rather than regular cloning, but ya know. It’s the imagery.

It also really reminded me of the stuff from Hyper-Tension which was hypertime stuff not cloning but again just... visually.

In general I don’t think we’re EVER gonna see Black Zero or any of these multiverse Superboys again LMAO.

To try to sum up all of this in a way that might make sense here’s kinda a... flowchart of some of my main ideas for what the cloning situation could be/how the logic could work. Again this is borrowing stuff from across continuities because Infinite Frontier means theoretically anything’s fair game. (Also I don’t think I mentioned this earlier but I do mention it in the chart, but I think it’s also reasonable that Waller could get her hands on Cadmus tech if Cadmus is like properly made canon again. She just has funky government connections!)

Also I just now thought of this now several hours after I already made the chart and I don’t wanna remake it so sorry not incorporating it there but I remembered there was also that bit during House of Kent where Clark took Kon to the Hall of Justice and they were running some tests on him, so I’m thinking it’s also possible Waller got ahold of that data/that might be how she found out about Kon in the first place for this timeline. And they indicated that there was something wrong with him there, where he might eventually lose his powers or something, so maybe she tried to do cloning stuff to be able to have a copy of Superboy in his prime or something??? before that started kicking in. I don’t know, just more things to consider:

ANYWAYS in conclusion: there is clone fuckery of some sort happening, I’m curious where it’s gonna go, and I just want Kon to be okay.

the dream i had today <3 about time i had one about iswm lol

me, 112, engineer mark, dark and some lady (not Lady, just a random woman) were on a spaceship. from what i understood, we were moving from the invincible to this one, which was like 10 times bigger.

me, 112 and the random lady were exploring the rooms near the control room. apparently we needed to find a fridge/freezer, cuz the one in the main area was already full and we just had too much stuff.

and we find one! multiple, actually. theres one in every room. random lady yells at the computer in spanish (i think??... i dont speak spanish...) to take her back to the main room, so she can start bringing over things to put in the freezer.

she's sucked into this huge vent thing and i never saw her again. rip lol

due to.. that.. i find out that if i scan my card from a specific local store, i can get teleported to the main room. and it works!

i look around the room and. dark's there. in the dark. just standing in the corner. right as im about to ask what he's doing, he says

"hey, yes i've been standing here the whole time. in the dark" IN THE MOST DISGUSTING FAKE-DEEP VOICE EVER. HE SOUNDED LIKE AN EBOY WHO VAPES 24/7

yeah. i just stare at him and the lights turn on. then im raiding the broken freezer so we can move things to one in the next room. dark looks at me dissapointedly and comes to help.

i show him where to put everything, as i go back to the broken freezer. 112 and engineer mark are there now, talking shit about dark. stuff like "how he's not even doing anything" and "it feels like he could and will kill them at one wrong move"

yeah no, i have more important things to do, and i go to the small minifridge that was in the corner to clear that out as well.

its... its full of ice cream i like. half of the ice creams were half-eaten tho and while 112 and mark are talking i just fuckin yell

"WHO THE HELL CANT EAT THEIR DAMN ICE CREAM???"

it was mark. he couldn't.

i grab all the ice creams and head back to dark. he's sorted everything except some... soup that we had in BOWLS of all things and the ice cream i brought just now.

once that's all done, i find some cool machine that can bring us to a randomly generated universe!

i clicked trough some of them, and settled on one that had giant, royal purple mushrooms and black skies.

so we prep to go on this trip, and we end up putting on the lil spacesuits nasa sells on their website. but in this dream, they actually, yknow, work and arent just costumes. i got the white one, dark got the orange one and idk bout the other 2.

and right as we were about to travel to this cool mushroom world, i wake up </3

... can you take a wild guess of what i had to do a few days ago?? aka.. deal w a broken freezer.. and having to move everything to a diff freezer... except now its in S P A C E

House MD season 2

30 second episode recaps from someone whos just watched em for the first time and has bad recall

Ep1: they gotta cure the death row dude so he can go back to death row to b killed, cameron is Bad at telling ppl they're dying, house n Wilson had lunch with the coma guy, they cured death row man, also they changed the theme and I hate it Ep2: House has hayfever lmao, this cancer girl with hallucinations is honestly just the coolest she's so positive I love her, shes nine and got chase to kiss her hero,, house an Wilson have a shared balcony amazing, Wilson is so good and pure and is amazing at his job holy shit I love this man. House actually 'temporarily killed' the patient to cure her and made people run drills on a dead man. House is 400% going to buy a motorbike Ep3: i prayed for Cuddy's handyman to fall off her roof past the window and then god answered my prayers and he did, house broke into Cuddy's house mainly to look at her underwear lbr and then won the 'can we chop off his arm' argument, house secretly speaks spanish and waited for the most dramatic moment to reveal this, they gate crashed a cock fight (ayy) and saved the patient Ep4: the patient is a doctor with an ego ((according to house lmao pot, kettle)) who wanted to sit in on the diagnostic process and honestly is actually full of himself,, house puts him on a tippy table and cranks it up, foreman made a patient cry except he was pretending to be house lmao house got in shit,, Cameron needs to stop please, can the patient get his head out his arse please. house gatecrashes the press conference that the patient called and managed to put him into cardiac arrest on live television and eventually cured him of everything cept bein a knob Ep5: Wilson's handwriting is such doctor handwriting and house definitely bought a motorbike and made Wilson pay for it he's so pleased with himself. The kid keeps getting electrocuted but like,, by his own body. House is avoiding his parents but Cameron n Wilson aren't letting him get away with it. I love house n Wilson's friendship so much it's worth 5k apparently lmao. These patients are fukin serial liars jc why are ppl like this, it was rADIATION wow houses dad is a fucking DICK. There were so many good interactions and the house/wilson ship is sailing Ep6: there was a cyclist who took a LOT of drugs which turned out to be curing him of the thing he had, house is a douchebag but we all knew that - he may b a dick to mark but m sure mark deserves it n I love him anyway. Wilson remains a sweet boy even if he cheats idgaf he's adorable look at him ((wilson: i net someone who made me feel funny, me: was it hOUSE)),, he n house are balcony buddies and house shud stop stealing his food, and he should definitely stop digging thru stacys life but actually fuck it why not he's not gunna let go of this why is she so pissy i wanna know Ep7: I love houses new pet rat Steve McQueen,, Wilson is 4000% done with houses Stacy related antics which is fair tbh he should stop but I actually don't give much of a shit about Stacy I've taken against her....he did deserve what she said after reading her file tho. The patient may have given Cameron aids and Cameron got high and slept with Chase, who she may have given aids lmao these ppl r messes but not as much of a mess as that father/son relationship jc...i dont remember anything else about the patient whoops Ep8: chase is being suuuueeeeddd and he keeps lying about why lmao,, house fuckin reamed him one which was probably called for but maybe not like that, turns out chase screwed up cus his dad died and foreman is houses boss ((supervisor)) now how well do u think that's gunna work (((not very))) Stacy's still a bitch and has ~~feelings~~ Ep9: foreman is in charge and house is doing his utmost best to be the dick of the year and it's fucking hilarious honestly I love this man the shit he pulls jc,,, Wilson is super aware of houses antics as usual and had a mild gay panic when foreman started to question him about house,, the patient was a big ol Faker™ but surprise surprise she was actually sick this time ((house totally injected her with a load of stuff so she’d b readmitted after they’s released her)) Ep10: house solved a case thru the phone alone and spent most of the ep at the airport except for those five minutes when he almost slept with Stacy who once had a terrible experience with curry apparently and called house a vindaloo, nice restraint very well timed phone call thank fuck,,, they will sleep together tho and I am Not Happy about it....the power play amongst the fellows is a boiling pot of trouble - the patient was v interesting I enjoyed the word scramble game Ep12: WHAT A GOOD FUCKIN EP so the patient orgasmed in the white chamber while unconscious and covered in burns but more importantly house gatecrashed the lecture of his old archenemy that he had arranged just so he could disturb it and criticise the dude who got him thrown out of med school for snitchin on his cheating all whilst Wilson told him to get better hobbies (('a hooker anything please')),, to test this dudes migraine meds he gave deliberately himself a migraine and the meds didn't work (unsurprising) so the fellows turned out all the lights while he had a nap under the table,, wilson took a diff approach and deliberately made a Lot of noise because he is a Shit even if he hides it better than house,,,, then house dropped a tab of acid and took a bunch of antidepressants, and cured his migraine as well as the patient Ep13: houses leg was super duper sore but at least we got some fantastic house/wilson interaction when wilson pretended to be God during that MRI, even if house hit him with a cane.... The patient was a teen supermodel who seduced her own father to get whatever she wanted,, house was super sure she had cancer and it turns out she did but it was testicular because she had xy chromosomes and was immune to testosterone - which was really fucking interesting...... Also cuddy played house like a violin and gave him placebo saline instead of a morphine shot to prove to him that his leg pain was psychological Ep14: House is stealing organs now. Ok so technically he did get the husband's permission to steal his newly dead wife’s heart for the dying old dude with a strangely young daughter but only after he kneed house in the balls super hard. House spent the whole ep goin on at wilson about the affair he thought he was having and at the end wilson showed up on houses doorstep but sURPRIse !! It was his wife who was sleeping around!! poor baby Wilson I know what goes around comes around but he's such a kicked puppy cmon Ep15: Wilson and house living together is a recipe for disaster and I'm living for it so good so many good interactions I love that house is gunna keep him for his food ((I'll never b over house hearing the voicemail about Wilson's new place, looking over at him sleeping on the couch and then deleting it so he has to stay)). The patient had a super cool marriage and didn't have lupus except whoops actually not a happy marriage his wife is tryna kill him thru gold poisoning. House needs to stop accosting ppl in bathrooms and should also stop destroying marriages Ep16: oh man good shit so,, first of all house n Wilson are still living together and there are some Domestic Antics happening right here including but not limited to a prank war which house desperately tried to get Wilson to participate in, the peak of which had house making Wilson wet the couch and Wilson sabotaging houses cane. The patients mum was ridiculously overprotective and house essentially kidnapped the patient to find the tick noone else thought was there,, surprisingly Wilson helped set that up despite the fact house was the reason he woke up wet that morning Ep17: first things first house could absolutely clean everyone out at poker if he knows Cuddy's tells that well through just a phonecall,, also he needs to stop calling Wilson out on his toenail varnish habits lmao. The patient was a smol boy who presented the same symptoms as an unsolved and dead case that house had 12 yrs ago so he really wasn't gunna let this one go cus he's like a dog with a bone. They were in formal wear all ep which was a Good Look™ and Wilson's retelling of how he won the poker championship may have been one of the cutest things I have ever seen Ep18: Emma from Glee is here and she has the black plague,, her gf decided to donate her liver n Cameron was all het up cus house had worked out plague girl was gunna leave her and sending the gf in blind would be ~~unethical~~ but turns out she knew and deliberately did that so Emma would stay with her out of guilt lmao. In other news Cameron's pissy cus foreman 'stole' her article and house spent most of the episode napping cus wilson is fuckin up his sleep cycle ;) I'm upset there was no physical wilson Ep19: the most annoying patient so far appears in the form of a 15 yr old faith healer with herpes. I feel like the degree to which unrelenting niceness irritates me rly says something about me but eh oh well. Chase (ofc it was chase) kept a tally on who was winning God or house, faith healer managed to shrink a womans cancer tumour through giving her herpes (((a miracle praise be))) and during poker night house called wilson out on sleeping with said cancer patient and discovered wilson was actually living with her whoops bad Wilson ((he totally regrets his life choices ((he should)))) Ep20: HOLY SHIT ITS A TWOPARTER AND FOREMANS GUNNA DIE !! Ok so,,, there was this cop who couldn't stop laughing till he could but then it got a lot worse and then foreman caught whatever it was which they began to realise when he smirked as house shot a corpse to see what a bullet in a brain would do to an MRI ((spoilers it broke the machine)) anyway long story short it wasnt the pigeons and the cops dead and foreman is gunna die even after that shitdick move he pulled where he stabbed Cameron with a needle so she'd go to the apartment Ep21: HOO BOY OK SO a lot happened so much happened the most important thing is foreman by the end of the ep is mostly kind of ok - he's just a bit muddled on his lefts n rights. During the ep house was stressed the entire time cus even tho he denys it he does love n care for his ducklings,, he even cares enough to deliberately attempt to poison Steve McQueen which didn't work but can be added to the list of stressful events. Cameron grew a spine a lil bit I literally yelled when she berated cuddy and she forced the biopsy cus foreman had the foresight (ayyyyy) to make her his medical proxy even if house managed to find the problem anyway so it was ultimately unnecessary and has just resulted in some possible brain damage Ep22: house keeps trying to pick a fight with foreman and failing because Foreman's all happy go lucky now, the patient was mad because of a thing and killed her baby accidentally on purpose, the music that played during the baby autopsy was super unnecessary and bizzare, and in the end the woman had cancer but she's refusing treatment cus of the baby guilt. Cuddy didn't have cancer, which we know because Wilson ((WILSON NOT HOUSE)) stole her dna and ran secret tests in the middle of the night, but it still wasn't a date Wilson despite what house said about skin lessions she was actually just going to attempt to use u as a sperm donor - have fun at the L-word marathon with house you big sad loser (I love u) Ep23: we meet an old house friend which is Super fun he is ridiculously naive and I love that he calls house g-man holy shit. House is now giving cuddy injections as part of a fertility treatment which is nice of him especially seeing as his leg was in a Lot of pain this ep,, like a LOT...he's self-injecting morphine now which is probably bad :/ house's friend's daughter was the patient at one point she pooped out her mouth gRoSs and house ran a paternity test n told the girl she was actually the dudes daughter ((except he was lYINg in support of his friend)) he does care Ep24: HOUSE GOT SHOT WHAT IS IT WITH THIS TEAM SUFFERING RN JC this was a very fun episode of 'guess when house is hallucinating', spoilers the answer is all the time the whole ep takes place in his head. That aside I absolutely loved the hospital gown/trainer combo (no I won't apologize) and the fact that house did almost none of his physio - instead relegating it to others which is....not how it works. The hallucinatory clinic patient was freaky deaky his eye exploded and so did his dick but dw cus to escape the hallucination house killed him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ what can u do. At the end house woke up n requested ketamine we'll see how that goes

Switching Perspectives - Weekly Reflections / Reading Blog - Week 3

***This is a combination of both the readings and weekly reflections since it was said I could do both, if we’ve done both.

Reflections

Rather than learning about repetition, I learned about something else. Many of the activities we seem to do truly reflect what I already learned in taisha’s, interestingly enough, so I never really have anything to add onto my vocabulary beyond learning that I am improving in finding new ways to approach things when it might have taken me half the performance/activity to do so before.

Regardless, I was hoping to say something in response to the question, “What have you learned from doing repetition yesterday?” I suppose it was a leading question because we went on an enormous discussion on repetition, even going as far as making an entire chart. I was hoping to have at least expressed what I wanted to share at the end, since it was short and not an answer meant to be elaborated upon by my peers.

The one thing I did learn was from the demonstration with ana’s group. I always read about artists going far and beyond by including the audience or changing the perspective of the piece, but it was not until I finally got to see an example of this at work that I was to finally “put a name to a face.” The only way I really imagined ‘audience participation’ is when I would have people come up and teach them some Tahitian or West African, or even have them walk around the performance for each person. While this could basically apply to any other technique-ridden form, the way people can creatively implement audience participation without prompting people to come up--apart from what I had done with the concept(s?) of Body Madness in taisha’s--really put everything in perspective. It was also something I really needed to see because it gave me something to think about for my piece (for UCRiD) that I felt was missing and also gave me something to add to my vocabulary for future reference, now that I understand it.

I think there are different ways of repeating beyond movement and routine. Maybe it’s the repeating mindset or beliefs that creates different actions, but the fundamentals from where it comes from is repeating.

Reading #3: Thinking Slowness

(part 1) ur gonna roast me for this but im legit curious why mafia AUs are so bad? im asking in a non confrontational way, i get it romanticizing mafia is wrong, but i also believe that 1)most mafia AUs are a really toned down type of mafia;2)they do make for some interesting kinds of dynamics with fanart and with fics; 3)in a fic specifically u can create your own world and call something mafia and still make it so they don't kill innocent people but only idk members of other gangs or sth

(part 2) plus theyre a way to put ur charas in a completely diff context and see what theyll do. i mean i dont believe that writing ships in a certain context (like mafia) equals romanticizing that context. mafia AUs arent even my fav things to read (in fact i almost never do), im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

okay, so, let’s have it out of the way: I have nothing against mob aus or crime aus. I have a problem against calling them mafia AUs because in the US mafia = organized crime at large, in Italy mafia = ACTUAL EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVELY HARMFUL. now that I introduced the topic I’ll c/p you the reply I gave to another anon who while discussing the issue pointed out that most writers don’t even know Italian mafia is a thing, which is pretty much on the same discourse so...

*The thing is - in the US it might not be enough of a deal anymore and I honestly do get why people make the mafia = regular mobsters, since the mafia was the first foreign organized crime being exported to the US via italian immigrants (sorry if this sounds horrible in English but I just woke up and I still didn’t have coffee) so I understand that mafia became the umbrella term.But the thing is that - as you said, these people don’t even know that there’s a mafia in Italy anymore or where the word comes from.

I’m going to link to italiansreclaimingitaly’s tag about the mafia and its perception outside Italy because they posted about this extensively and it’s an excellent resource, but meanwhile I’m gonna do a very short bullet point list and about the topic:

Mafia might not be a big deal in the US, but it still is here. We have the beauty of four different mafias (Cosa Nostra - the Sicilian one, camorra which is the one in Campania but has tendrils spread everywhere, the 'ndrangheta which is in Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia) which are all active [especially camorra and 'ndrangheta] and whose actions have direct impact (negative) on our economy and on our society. Actually mafias are one of the main reasons we’re currently economically fucked up, and if I start talking about how mafia culture keeps some areas literally backwards I could talk about it for three months.

There are still people who are killed for standing up against them. These days the most prominent personality is Roberto Saviano who is a writer who dared to put together a book documenting minutely the way camorra works and he’s been living under protection for years by this point. Like, they want him dead because he wrote a book. And I’m sorta sure that he was talking about leaving Italy and going to the US after years of sticking with it here because he can’t take it anymore but I don’t know if it was a taken decision or if it’s still debating it.

It wasn’t even thirty years ago that we had the stragi di mafia - in english it’d be something like the mafia slaughters, basically around the beginning of the nineties there were a number of bombs planted by the mafia targeting people who were trying to oppose it including judges Falcone and Borsellino, actually the anniversary of Falcone’s death is like... tomorrow. And they’ve killed people for way longer than that. Here is a list of only Cosa Nostra victims including the ones from the eighties/nineties. And people are still dying because of it. The slaughters I’m referring to are just the ones in the nineties which are enough of a number.

They also perpetuate a culture where if you testify against your mafia-employed relatives you’ll be shunned forever. There are women who testified against their families and couldn’t see their children anymore never mind that they weren’t automatically considered a relative anymore the moment they sided against the mafia. Some people have committed suicide after becoming witnesses also because our police force/justice system can be terribly non-supportive in this kind of situation so they got left on their own. Never mind that back in the day - it was the beginning of the nineties? - I recall at least a particular story of - I think, correct me if I remember wrong but I can’t remember the names for the life of me - where this guy testified against the local mafia when he either used to work for them or was forced to pay them the pizzo and in retaliation his six-year old (or five? Anyway he had a son younger than ten for sure) got kidnapped, killed and thrown into acid to dispose of the body. That happened in what, 1993? 1994? It’s pretty much yesterday. And now the camorra is doing the same - there’s a list here of camorra victims among which accidental passerbys that got killed because they were in the way which I can tell just by glancing is not complete. And I’m not even going into the 'ndrangheta. That is to say, here mafia still kills people and cripples our country.

Now, I get that it’s a word, but the point was: let’s say that instead of the Italians the Japanese came to the US first and the umbrella word for organized crime was yakuza rather than mafia and let’s say yakuza was still what it was originally in Japan while in the US it stopped being a big deal and people write yakuza!AU instead of mafia AU. Let’s say someone Japanese gets angry at that and goes like 'listen the yakuza is a real deal it does this this this and that and it’s a plague in our country so can you please at least look it up before writing your fanfic’, which is what had happened way back then when this whole mafia and fanfic thing blew up. A bunch of people told us to get over it because it’s just a word and if it’s a problem in Italy it’s not in the US so why should they care? Now, if we had been Japanese (or Chinese or Russian or Mexican) would they have said the same thing? Considering the general tumblr attitude I’m pretty sure they would have received either an apology or 'this is an important deal let’s keep that in mind’ with signal boost reblogs and stuff.

It’s the fact that we should get over people not knowing that it’s still a real problem for us and that they can’t take five seconds to google it that is the problem imo. Especially when instead of mafia au you can just say mobsters au or tag it as organized crime and everyone is a lot happier, mostly because as the tag above explains romanticising the mafia is a good thing for them because it means they can act outside Italy with less stigma because everyone thinks that the mafia is dead or not relevant anymore, if I’m explaining myself. (And it’s active outside Italy - like, there was a mafia kill in Germany in 2007 where six people died (sorry the link is in Italian but there isn’t an English wiki page, if you look the city up you’ll find something probably) and it was because of the 'ndrangheta.

I’d really like to not get worked over it because it meant it was a thing of the past y'know, but the problem is that it isn’t and I’d rather spread some awareness in hope some of these writers look it up (because it’s a good thing that people know what mafia is since as stated they have tendrils everywhere - if you read Saviano’s book the entire first chapter is about how camorra regularly deals with Chinese import/export in Italy for one) than shrug and figure that since they’ll think everything is good for fanfic then it’s not even worth my time.*

WHAT NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ABOUT REPORTER

If you go to a VC with a new idea and ask him to invest in it, if one could only figure out what to do, how good you are at taking orders, how much is due to the situation but the people. Meeting in the Ledgermaine Lounge

Part 2

[Part 1]

{ A collaborative story between myself, @loveherdekay, @hmratking and @singinglockpick. This story takes place a month before the switching of Dalaran’s hands, as the Legion’s invasions just begin to unfold across Azeroth, eventually leading to the later purge of the Rat Kingdom from the Underbelly. }

The Lounge had nearly emptied as the few hours dawdled on, the two having retreated to a booth at the back of the dining area. Safrona's soft laughs were muffled into her own glass of wine now, lured to indulge, and now a little more than tipsy. "...always the rogue with you..." she teased in a slower drawl, too amused with his stories. "And that little girl've yours will be the sweet death of you..."

Will laughed, a hearty sound that tilted his head back. "Don't I know it! All my own damned fault, too! I feel sorry for all the poor souls whose hearts she'll break." He shook his head. "We need to meet like this more often, I have missed you." A smirk danced in his eyes, "I'll be right back. When I return, I'll tell you a secret." He rose from the table and went to the privvy.

Mora pushed the fire mage closer to the a position where he could see the Courier and her friend without being overly suspicious. She had went back to the apartments and convinced Sparky to come out with her against his possible better judgement. "We just have to find the Wine Girl yea? C'mon, beastie!" she coaxed him, telling him that Safrona had something Mora wanted to deliver to the king.

"What do you see? Sparky? " she asked impatiently as she hung back. If her intentions were not so malicious she would have approached right away, but she did not want to be the last one seen with the infamous lady. No, instead Sparky looked much more accepting in a room full of the living. She told him on the way to the lodging to introduce himself and get her to walk outside with him and it seemed now was as good a chance as they were going to get.

She had a way of luring him out without giving him a chance to question, so when she pulled him from the apartment, he couldn’t say no. He listened carefully to what she had to say and by the time Sparky had finally built up the confidence to question Mora’s actions, she had him against the wall, peeking into the inn.

He searched the room, noticing how empty it was by now except for a few souls and the key target: this so-called Courier. “She’s alone. So you want me to introduce myself and pull her out? How the hell am I going to do that?” He looked inside once more and sighed. “Why again?”

"Get creative, Nightlight. Tell her you think some one was asking for her..." He had said she was alone, the undead did not want this opportunity to pass with all the questions..so many questions! "GO-go-go," she hissed, " when she comes out I will tell you everything, it will make sense then! For Gods sake don't call attention to yourself being...well...you. Be some one else, but go!" She gave him another nudge so that he was in view now.

He stumbled at the center of the entryway and Sparky turned to look at Mora with confusion. "Did you...did you just call me a ‘nightlight?" However, he didn't bother expecting a response considering he was in plain view. Clearing his throat, Sparky pulled his black leather jacket around him tightly and took a step into the inn, hoping that by the time he approached this redhead he had something to say.

A few more steps and he smiled at her. "Um...good evening, ma'am. Nice night out, hm?" He forced a smile, although she was pleasing to the eyes.

A slow blink of her heavy lashes, and Safrona's gaze eventually slipped up from the near empty bottle of wine to the new face. It was obvious from that lazy smile that the wine had dulled her a bit, her all-too amused chuckle unravelling on a breath. "Could be...but I'm rather inside, lovely boy." Tilting her head further into the cradle of her propped fingers, a glance was given to the skylights above, her long, merlot braid slipping off her shoulder. "...ahh, there we go. Mmmm, violet as ever, day or night...can't...quite tell anymore."

She seemed like a nice woman, so Sparky began to feel guilty about lying to the woman, especially since she seemed rather tipsy. But, Mora requested it, so he obliged. “Prettier outside.” He smiled. “So, someone told me you sold wine? I have someone who wishes to purchase some, but she’s outside. Can’t walk well, and her device that tows her around doesn’t fit through the doorway.” Even he didn’t believe that lie. He hoped she was too drunk to make sense of any of it.

“Could you possibly come out and take her order? She just asked me to call for you.” He crossed his glove covered fingers and smiled at her.

"Bit late for a wine call..." Safrona murmured, her gaze again lazily making its way around the Lounge, wondering where her own company had went. A laugh bubbled out of the Sin'dorei as she mused on her own words. "Who'm I kidding? It's never too late!" There was an affectionate way about the Courier as she laughed again. "But I don't think I'm going to be able to tell the diff between a red and a white right at this horrid moment...mhaha...so...a list might be...a better way to do things, yes?" She reached for the other elf's arm and thought to squeeze it playfully if he might permit. "Help me help you and tell me what she wants, yes? And we'll put those strong arms to work..."

This was not going the way he wanted. He smiled, maybe even chuckled at her state of being, and took a breath. “Perhaps she wants both? Why don’t I carry them and you come with me? That way she can choose and you won’t lose a beat?”

Sparky smiled nervously and slowly extended his gloved hands out to her. “Here, I’ll take your bottles.” He could hear Mora laughing at him now, but this was so difficult!

Safrona looked to the empty bottle at the table and chuckled. "No...no, come now...stay with me lovely! This bottle...is...it's very empty!" The bottle was lifted from the table and playfully thrust at Sparky like a jabbed sword. "And who would have fun with any of that?"

Using the man to pull herself up from the table, she pulled him by the sleeve to the bar. "If your woman wants wine, we'll get her wiiiiine."

Rolling his eyes, Sparky helped the drunk woman up and directed her toward the door. "Did you drink all this by yourself? It's a good thing you won't spontaneously combust." He smirked and sighed. The sooner he could get her to Mora, the better for him.

The Courier laughed against the stranger's shoulder as he helped her across the Lounge, just a little unsteady on her feet. "..'t was Will's fault now, just meant to sell the damn wine, like always...! Do you know how haaaard it is to resist after...waaatching everyone else drink for a week and...holding back? It's my bloody turn!"

Another giggle, and she ruffled Sparky's hair as she slowly realized he was leading her out of the Lounge...though by the time she did they were already a foot out of the doorway. Still, the elf had started to pull away a bit to attempt to reach the bar. "Buuuut. You said your lady needs wine, yes? Business is...always rather good! She'll need all the samples, don't you think?" Apparently she was not drunk enough to completely ignore requested business.

Mora stood just within the shadows as the poor drunken Courier was guided to the door and not the bar. A wide smile that only was visible due to the fel glow within the small warlock's mouth made Mora easier to spot in the dark patch she waited in. A few imps waited by her heels, watching with greedy eyes as Sparky brought Saf fourth, which was now starting to look against her will.

" Yes! Beastie, It is your turn!..you most certainly deserve a turn," she coo'ed out and couldn't help but giggle in her excitement. She only waited momentarily for the Courier to register who's voice was speaking to her and Mora knew that even in Safrona's state, she would soon be able to tell. "Shh shh no, no, NO questions. Just business beastie. You see I was starting to grow rather fond of you." She pulled Saf by the wrists away from Sparky, and for such a petite little monster she was rather strong when need be. Yanking the Courier down some she placed a single and very soft kiss on her lips, that was until she bit her, though it was a small bite just enough for the paralytic balm on those black stained lips to do it's job. Within a few spared seconds it would flow over the drunken courier's frame and what a help all the wine in her blood did for moving it along fast enough to keep Saf from screaming or calling for help.

" It's not good when I like someone. Its never good. Still, I will miss our late nights." She helped ease the woman down as the poison took effect." Pick her up Nightlight, we have to go now...NOW! " She hissed knowing that he was prone to asking to many questions as well and now was not the time. "I've gift wrap to pick out! " Clapping her hands in a quick excited fashion, she beckoned her imps and Sparky to follow.

He lifted the downed woman and carried her as he huffed. "Seriously? Nightlight?" He carried the Courier, trying not to step on the imps around his feet. "So, why this woman?"

Mora smiled as he fixated on what she was calling him, was cute... and that made her wrinkle her nose some. She lead them though alley ways and more vacant side streets until they were closer to the apartments. She wasn't kidding about the gift wrap. "Why not? She was dumb enough to let you pull her outside... " But she knew he wasn't going to let her slide her way out of this one with random nonsense. She waited for him to pester her with more questions but sighed in a dramatic fashion as she walked up to the door of her housing. "I tolllld you, she has something the king wants. Or is she the something that he wants?" Tilting her head to the side, she waved her hand dismissively in thought. In fact she wasn't all to sure still what the king would do with the Courier, but the only true part that mattered to her was.. she didn't care. He would be surprised or pleased or BOTH! And that was good enough for Mora to jump on an opportunity that his other loyal subjects did not.

"Hold onto her, I'll be right back" Mora purred, slipping inside to grab some crap to aid in the 'gift' giving ceremony. Burlap sacks and big red bows. Perfect.

Will came back down from the privy, cursing under his breath about elves who couldn't hold their liquor and locking doors. He was thankful he hadn't stepped in any of the vomit at least.

He had started back to their table when he noticed Safrona was gone. Odd. Perhaps it was her turn to the privvy, or another sale had coerced her away for a while. The damned woman had thrown herself into her business with everything she had. Thus the rogue sat, pouring the dregs of the wine into his glass and gulping it down. Will had time to kill until she returned and he used it wording how he would tell her the good news of exactly why he'd been spending so much time with his wife and daughter.

An Overview of What's Coming in Vue 3

At the time of this writing, Vue 3.0 is at its 10th alpha version. Expect a faster, smaller, more maintainable, and easier to use version of the Vue you know and love. You can still use Vue via a script tag and your Vue 2.x code will continue to work. But you can start playing with the alpha version of Vue 3.0 here and we’re going to get into some of what v3 is offering.

Among other things, there’s a new API for creating components. It doesn’t introduce new concepts to Vue, but rather exposes Vue’s core capabilities like creating and observing reactive state as standalone functions. This is ultimately useful to Vue developers of all levels.

Options API and Composition API

In Vue 2, components are created with the object-based Options API. Vue 3 adds a set of APIs, referred to as the Composition API, which is function-based. This is primarily to address two issues that Vue 2 ran into for very large projects.

In large components that encapsulate multiple logical tasks, you want to group code by feature, but the nature of the Options API is that such code gets split up (among lifecycle hooks and so on), negatively affecting readability. Secondly, you want to be able to reuse logic in large-scale projects, and in Vue 2, solutions like mixins don’t address either issue very well.

Vue 3 seeks to kill both birds with one stone by exposing a new API. This API will live alongside the Options API, not replace it. This means that you can go on building components in the way that you’re used to without encountering any problems. But, you can also start building with the Composition API, which provides more flexible code organization and logic reuse capabilities as well as other improvements.

Even if the problems it specifically addresses are not pertinent to you, the new API has clearly had a lot of thought go into it to push Vue forward as a framework, for instance, by reducing the extent to which Vue operates “magically” behind the scenes.

Composition API

The Composition API is available now as a plugin for Vue 2 so you can try it out. It will be shipped baked-in in Vue 3.

In Vue 2 reactivity was achieved through the getters and setters of Object.defineProperty. This caused some limitations which you’ve already probably experienced (e.g.: updating an Array by index). In Vue 3, reactivity is accomplished through proxies, a feature that was introduced in JavaScript ES6.

You need not have a Vue instance to use the new reactivity API. It offers standalone APIs which allow you to create, observe, and react to state changes.

You would first import { reactive } from 'vue'. Then, you could create an object in the following way:

const state = reactive({ count: 0 })

You’ll have access to APIs that will allow you to dynamically inject component lifecycle hooks into a Vue instance.

The lifecycle registration methods can only be used in the setup() method which is the entry point where all the composition functions are called. For instance:

Functions that use these APIs can be imported into a component, allowing the component to do multiple logical tasks with reusable and readable code.

TypeScript

The composition API also offers better TypeScript support. It’s supposed to result in better type inferences with bindings returned from setup() and props declarations used to infer types.

Component code using TypeScript and JavaScript will look largely identical and TypeScript definitions benefit JavaScript users as well, say, if they use an IDE like Visual Studio Code.

View Declaration

Vue 2 supports templates as well as render functions. You don’t need to know an awful lot here except that Vue 3 continues to support both while optimizing rendering speed (such as by speeding up diff algorithms that operate under the hood so that Vue knows what needs to be re-rendered).

Faster

Virtual DOM has been rewritten from the ground-up to make for faster mounting and patching.

Compile-time hints have been added to reduce runtime overhead. This means skipping unnecessary condition branches and avoiding re-renders. Static tree and static prop hoisting means entire trees and nodes can skip being patched. Inline functions (like in a handler for a component in a template) won’t cause unnecessary re-renders.

You’re going to get a proxy-based observation mechanism with full language coverage and better performance. Instance properties will be proxied faster using native Proxy instead of Object.defineProperty like before.

You can expect up to 100% faster component instance initialization with double the speed and half the memory usage. 🏎️🏎️🏎️

Smaller

Vue 3 is also smaller.

It is tree shaking-friendly. Tree shaking refers to shaking off unused code. The core runtime has gone from ~20kb in size, gzipped, to ~10kb, gzipped.

The size of the Vue bundle increases with each new feature but, by providing most global APIs and Vue helpers as ES module exports, Vue 3 makes more code tree shakeable, even template code.

Coherence

Libraries like Vue Router and test-utils will be updated to line up with the new Vue. Vue now has a custom renderer API (similar to React Native for those who want to use it to create renderers for mobile or other host environments.

Conclusion

There is a ton to look forward to with Vue 3 with more like Portals that couldn’t fit in this short post. The new Composition API moves us towards an all around better Vue. An exact release date is not set but it’s coming soon. Get a head start now!

The LS engine. It’s kind of the final destination isn’t it. I see it a lot in my sick & twisted line of work: If you keep any one car long enough… and you keep kicking that can down the road far enough… eventually it bumps up against an LS swap & comes to rest. And you go, “Saaaay now, what’s this thing??”

The LS is the auto-aftermarket’s Roman Empire, and all roads lead to Rome if you stay on ‘em long enough.

Long story short, THAT’s why we’re sitting here looking at a turbocharged LS in Eric Englert’s 3000GT. It’s the result of being deeeeeeep in a labyrinth of 3000GT riddles & obstacles. You come up for air, and then all the sudden, the air’s full of tiny microscopic LS particles.

Backstory

So here’s the backstory – a 3000GT has been in Eric’s life for 20 years now. He met his wife in those earlier years with a ’91 model… and that car played a huge supporting role in their early relationship. He sold that first car so they could buy a house & build a family.

…Sold it for love how sweet.

But the 3000GT always had that sentimental value to Eric and his wife. So as the Englert family got planted & settled, Eric was able to pick this one up in 2010. A clean example of a pop-up headlight 3000GT. It was a 100% garaged & unmolested Arizona car, with original paint & a stock 6g72 engine.

Eric made the purchase, and then with open arms, Mitsubishi welcomed him back to the Mitsu-family & the car spun a bearing within the first month.

Eric built the 6g72 with bigger turbos & AEM management. He spun a bearing again.

He stuck a 3.5 6g74 in its place, made 500hp!! …And then shot a rod.

DSM Swap

After taking a bunch more hits with a bunch more 6g motors… Eric decided to pioneer a 4g63 (DSM) swap. A lot of people questioned why you’d go through the headache & torment of putting a 4g63 engine in a car that’s heavier than the Eclipse/Talon. But the 4G63 is a decimate-all engine with a lot of aftermarket support. And the 3000 is heavier, because it has heavier components – like a larger diff & CV axles. You can get a lot of the ‘dumb’ weight out of a 3000GT by removing all the complicated & overly-sophisticated technology of the time period. For example, swapping to a 4g63 with manual transmission takes 100-pounds off the nose… right off the bat. Then if you go through the car, and remove/replace heavy, burdensome suspension components, steering components, exhaust components, sound deadening, etc… you can get the weight about down to around DSM specs.

The 3000GT is actually very close to the 1G DSM chassis in design. It’s slightly wider, but it has the exact same wheelbase. You can literally use the 3000GT shifter & cables with the 4g swap. And a lot of your plugs & sensors (as well as your alternator) all plug right up.

So in short – Eric was running the DSM engine & transmission, with 3000GT axles & rear diff, and a modified 3000GT driveshaft. Eric engineered his own motor mounts for the 3000-to-4g63 swap… and he still makes them, in case anyone needs them for their own project.

With the 4g63-swapped version of this car, Eric was running 9.65 quarter-miles at 37-pounds of boost… WITH a full dash, carpet, and rear seats. BUT – on the street, Eric was running 50-pounds of boost and nitrous! So it was a low 9-second car… he just doesn’t have the time-slip to prove it.

Despite the impressive numbers on the 4g, he was breaking transfer cases at the track. And all the downtime in-between fixes waiting for custom parts, was causing Eric some impatience.

…So he decided to try the LS thing.

The LS Thing

The LS is not an easy swap in this car. It took waaaay more hours than expected, in terms of planning, cutting, and welding. Eric had to cut a new trans tunnel & firewall. So since he was eyeball-deep in it anyway, he said ‘screw it’ & made the hole bigger to move the engine further back towards the center of the car. He built a tube/chromoly subframe rather than hacking-up the original one… with the goal of functionally tucking 275 tires under the front.

The front brakes are off an SN95 Mustang. Eric’s also using Racecraft drop spindles for an SN95. Coilovers are Fortune Auto from an Evo 9. The power steering rack is courtesy of a schweet ’88 Thunderbird. And Eric’s using an electric hydraulic power steering pump off a Toyota MR Spyder.

The car just ‘debuted’ this past summer before LS Fest, where I bumped into him at a random gas station. It recently ran a 9.70 at 20psi… and that was limited to just rolling off the starting line, because he can’t launch it on stock axles.

With the Xona Rota XR400 84mm turbo + PTC Powerglide transmission, the car shifts so hard that it breaks axles literally every time at WOT… even on street tires. Eric carries extras in the trunk, and can often be seen replacing them on the side of the road. He’s running out of spares, so next up, Eric bought a Ford 8.8 rear-end & is buying super expensive built axles.

Family Affair

In hindsight, Eric would probably NOT do the LS swap again, simply because it was such a ton of work to get this engine into this chassis… referencing that he spent a year & a lot of dollars basically building a Japanese C5 lol. But having said that – Eric is 100% DEFINITELY glad he did it. He doesn’t regret the turnout… it was just a lot of work to get there. But for the Englert family, 3000GTs are kind of a family affair. They’re worth the hassle. And this car is equal parts crazy, clean, and unique. I mean shoot – you don’t see nice 3000GTs much anymore period… so to see one with an LS like this is pretty cool.

Eric has 4 kids – 18, 14, 13, and 6. Back when the 6-year-old was 4, he saw dad’s 3000GT with the front bumper off and said, “Don’t put the bumper back on, you’ll save weight.” Keep in mind… this kid is only 4 years old! Eric tried to explain aerodynamics the best he could. The next day, the kid (obviously having thought about it a good bit), came back and said, “Dad you should take the mirrors off… you’ll save weight annnd be more aerodynamic.”

Can’t argue with that!

Back when Eric’s 18-year old was just a baby, she left a froggy toy in his first 3000GT. That frog still sits in this car today, and has become Eric’s good-luck safety charm.

Engine Progression….

6g72. 135k mi 100% stock. Engine died by spun rod bearing within a month of ownership.

6g72. Bought a built used engine and went nuts doing the build I always dreamed of. (twin billet td05 turbos, AEM, custom FMIC to keep foglights, etc). After getting it driving, had low compression in one cyl.

6g72. Tore down used built engine for a full refresh, and also bought new aftermarket billet oil pump gears (mistake!). This engine died by spun rod bearing at only 400whp. Later discovered that the oil pump gears were not machined correctly causing oil pressure issues at higher rpm.

6g74. Parted out built 3.0l engine and ran a stock 3.5l 6g74 on the billet turbos. Lasted for a short while at 500whp & ended in carnage with a busted rod.

6g72. Stock replacement… sold billet turbos for used 14Bs. Had a lot of fun with this engine around 500whp for quite awhile, and eventually bent a rod.

6g72. decided on built engine again with big mofo cams to rev. Also bought a TIG welder to try fabbing. Modified my td05 kit for open wastegate dumps, and downpipe to expand to 4-inches, for a 4″ aluminum exhaust. Also swapped in an AWD auto (trans available in EU and Japan for the non-turbo awd 3000/GTO). LOVED the auto! Totally hooked on the instant & aggressive shifts, combined with zero boost lag between shifts. Engine died an early death due to crank balance issue that wiped out the mains. Demoralized yet motivated.

4g64. 4GSwap was born! Stock 2.4l with dohc head and a single 14B turbo paired with AWD auto for proof of concept. Engine didn’t die!!

4g64. built 2.4LR and HX40 turbo. Ran 10.7 on street tires. Died due to oil filter backing off & losing oil

4g63. 2.0 built, Forced Performance Super 99 turbo! Ran 9’s. Lots of fun. Engine didn’t die!! Parted out to go even crazier.

4g63. 2.0 long rod. Billet crank, aluminum rods, gas-ported pistons. Also ran 9’s, but ended up running a lot more boost on the street. Engine didn’t die!!! Sold & parted to fund LS Swap

5.3l iron block. Proof of concept engine. Issues with imported turbo so only ran 10.9. Engine didn’t die!! Swapped to aluminum block for 100lb weight savings. Sold iron block.

5.3l Aluminum block. Still kickin! 9’s at 20psi and no nitrous. A lot more of both to come. It may die. 😀

Already have a K1 forged stroker crank and K1 rods on the shelf. Plan to get Wiseco pistons to build a 5.95l stroker in a spare aluminum 5.3l junkyard longblock I picked up 😉

One Week With: 2018 Ferrari Portofino

It’s a continual source of amusement because nobody expects it. The roof on the new Ferrari Portofino—the all-new replacement for the outgoing California T—has cuts and breaks in it, sure, but it still looks a lot like a permanent hardtop. Then you push the button on the center console and—“Whoa! Look at that!”—the eyes of anyone standing nearby go full wide as the Portofino’s rear end folds open, the roof raises up, and the entire “fixed roof” lowers down into a space that, just a few moments earlier, looked far too small to swallow a couple golf bags, much less an entire hardtop. When the roof is packed away, though, the Portofino looks like it was made to be a drop-top full-time—especially given the two dramatic fairings that rise up behind each rear headrest on the rear deck. Amazingly, even with the hardtop folded away, there’s still a decent amount of trunk room underneath it.

Nobody who climbs behind the wheel of the Portofino will care about roof logistics or cargo space, though, because this new Ferrari is simply too scintillating a driving experience. Compared with the California T, the new car’s 32-valve, twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 makes an additional 39 horsepower (and 4 lb-ft more torque), pushing the total to 591 hp at 7,500 rpm. Storming through a revised version of Ferrari’s acclaimed dual-clutch 7-speed, that’s enough firepower to launch the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and on to a top speed of “at least” 199 mph. What the numbers don’t convey, though, is just how awesome this performance feels from behind the wheel. Especially given the immediacy of the open cockpit, the onrush of speed is nothing short of sensational—the wind whistling by, the road and its surroundings smearing into a rampaging blur, the screaming exhaust note seemingly blasting out of Marshall amps stacked into the rear seats and cranked to “11.”

And, man, does this mighty V-8 throb with torque. There’s so much on tap, in fact, that Ferrari doesn’t even allow all of it to come on stream in first through third gears. The engine-management computer then metes out more of it as you climb through the gearbox, but only in seventh do all 561 pound-feet get to play. At the wheel, in auto-shifting mode, what you notice is the transmission shifting quickly into seventh at every opportunity—the better to reduce the V-8’s ravenous thirst for fuel. It’s not an issue, though, as there’s so much brawn available the Portofino accelerates smartly even when churning away at low revs in top gear. That said, I never used automatic mode after giving it a brief test, always switching to manual and shifting myself with the carbon-fiber paddles behind the wheel. Yeah, I burned through a lot of dinosaur juice doing so, but above 3,000 rpm or so the engine sounds so electric and raw no Portofino owner would want to drive it any other way. It’s worth noting that, compared with the California T, the new car’s exhausts are larger in diameter and are now electronically controlled. When fully open, they emit a far hairier cry than the Cali’s more subdued bellow.

In terms of beauty, the Portofino trounces the California T. Yes, Ferrari made improvements from the original California to the T that refined the shape of the latter car, but the Portofino runs in an altogether more stylish crowd. It’s a stunning car to look at, full of curves and creases and scoops, almost all of them functional as well as arresting (thin vertical intakes next to each headlight, for instance, feed air down and out through the front wheel spokes to reduce drag). Nobody I met while driving the car around Los Angeles had anything but applause for the styling. At a stoplight, one guy in a big SUV looked down into the open Ferrari and offered: “Let’s trade. You can have my truck. And the three kids in back. And my wife.” His wife was in the passenger seat. She did not appear to be laughing.

My test car carried the optional magnetorheological adaptive shocks ($5,568), and if you’re shopping for a Portofino you’ll want them, too. Even in Sport mode (selected via the manettino dial on the steering wheel), the ride is sublime. The engineers at Ferrari have long possessed an almost super-human power to craft suspensions that deliver both staggering handling prowess and the luxurious glide of a magic carpet. The Portofino is no exception. Switching to Comfort softens things just a tad, but not enough that I felt the need to drive in anything but Sport all the time. Standard are Ferrari’s F1-Trac traction-control system and a newly added E-Diff differential, originally developed for Ferrari’s Formula 1 cars. The electronically controlled system continually adjusts the torque between the two rear wheels as needed, making for formidable grip when powering out of corners and all but eliminating wheel spin. During a few hours hurling the Ferrari through my favorite mountain passes in Malibu, the Portofino proved literally breathtaking, attacking turns with massive lateral g forces, steering with precision (the Portofino is only the second Ferrari, including the new 812 Superfast, to feature an electronically assisted system), and braking powerfully and securely every time (carbon-ceramic rotors are standard). I should note that Ferrari managed to cut nearly 200 pounds compared with the California T, yet body rigidity is said to be improved by roughly 35 percent. For sure, even with the top stowed away, the Portofino felt nothing but tight and solid, with only the slightest trace of body quivers on really broken pavement. Also to note: The rear seats are mostly just there for appearances, but several times I drove with my wife up front and, in back, my 5’ 8” daughter (possible by sliding the passenger seat fully forward). My daughter grumbled a bit about the limited legroom but, hey, she was riding in a Ferrari. She didn’t grumble much.

The Portofino starts at just under $211,000, but my test car—painted in Grigio Titanio with a Cuoio copper-colored leather interior—checked in at $268,608. The options are staggeringly costly, including $4,219 for Apple CarPlay (yikes!), $1,856 for Scuderia Ferrari shields on the front fenders, $6,075 for front and rear parking cameras (they work great, by the way), $6,412 for fully electric seats, and $6,412 for a premium audio system. Having said that, do you honestly think any potential Portofino buyer cares whether the car costs $211K or $270K? Me either. They just want the car, and if I had the kind of money to go shopping at a Ferrari store, I’d feel the same. Frankly, all the options on my tester, never mind how expensive, truly did add to the magnificently comfortable and always-stirring motoring experience.

As test cars always do, soon enough the Portofino turned into a pumpkin and disappeared, whisked from my hands and back to its permanent garage. But this was a special one. I’ll be fondly remembering this remarkable new Ferrari for a long time to come.
