hello. can’t sleep. heres my answers to the gay sex question fcmh style.
would gay sex fix anna and nin?
i don’t think they really apply to this question (as a non-authority i’m not sure i can speak to their level of gay sex) but i couldn’t not include them. but yeah, gay sex* has already fixed them. anna’s brand of unconditional love and support is good for nin, and i think nin’s brashness and willingness to stick up for anna/say what anna doesn’t want to is good for her.
*in this case, “loving relationship” can be substituted for gay sex. but only in this case.
would gay sex fix don and alder?
i’m gonna go ahead and say i’m bald. there is clearly Something unresolved (at least, pretty obviously, on don’s end [FCMH s1e4]) between the two of them. i think a loving, committed, well-communicated relationship would absolutely fix them.
but this question is not about loving relationships!!! it’s about gay sex!!!!
IN THIS CASE, given the mismatch of level of feeling currently between them (as shown by deck of many flings) and don’s emotional constipation, i think there could easily be a poorly-communicated situation in which alder thinks it’s a casual having-fun thing and don thinks it means Everything and feelings get hurt. maybe making him worse. BUT, i think there could also be a case in which gay sex is a catalyst for emotional openness and vulnerability. there is such a beautiful world of possibilities.
however, my real reason for baldness is that no amount of gay sex will bring alder back.
would gay sex fix claire and shamsiel?
now this may be controversial. but i’m gonna say yes. for claire: confirmation of lesbianism and also that lesbianism can, like, be fun and feel good and not just be The Shame. for shamsiel: tacit recognition that she is valued and wanted as a person and not just as a tool of the bureaucracy/the position of guardian angel. tho to be clear for this to indeed fix them it would have to be like slow mushy lovey sex but tbh i don’t see it playing out any other way. one of them might cry, i don’t know.
would gay sex fix mary and samara?
yes.
would gay sex fix levi and shay?
i think it’s pretty safe to say that gay sex would make things worse. i think there’s a world in which shay makes levi better (“this is for us”; and all that, he could do with an emotional investment in an anchor), but also easily a world where shay makes levi worse (i think they probably bring out the worst in each other). levi’s probably gonna make shay worse.
from the standpoint of my own shaybrain, i think a shay who decides to have gay sex with levi is a shay who is feeding his worst impulses or a shay who feels like this is the only way to feel any sort of control over his current situation
BUT there’s something to be said about someone who brings out the worst in you and has therefore seen you at your pettiest and meanest. they can see right through your bullshit and won’t hesitate to pick a fight and call you on it. but this also requires a degree of intimacy that idk if they have. tbh all this would be a plot of its own that i would not care to get into in-game so. all theoretical
hmm maybe i’ve talked myself out of it. i think i might be bald.
would gay sex fix ryan rizvi?
gay sex is ryan’s problem.

Im rereading the ASG and im SOOOOO anticipating the information in this book to show up in the sequels somewhere.
It kinda feels like the ASG was mainly made to explain lore for all the games moreso than incorperating it into the movies, which is a shame because of how much lore can be made canon if its given proper time to be explored in important scenes instead of shoved to the side as short montages with minimal narration in favor of extended action sequences.
We could have seen:
Tuk playing with a Banshee toy
Banshee bows in use (tho some archery and weapons versed people in the Avatar server said it looked quite impractical to use lol),
We could have heard the whistling sounds of the awaiei or banshee of paradise (The survival guide doesn't say where the plant is found so it could be placed anywhere convenient in the war to make narrative use of its apparent eerie sounds)
Some symbolism with the delta and unidelta tree could be used as metaphors because of how the smaller unidelta sated one shares root toxins with the larger delta tree (possibke mother/daughter or father/son, teacher/student metaphors), and unidelta makes use to the Na'vi by having non toxic, waterproof leaves for bowls and other tools
The ritualism of gifting a personal belongings rack to a friend as described on page 44 could be seen in Jake's memories when Neytiri was teaching him or in memories of Jake and Neytiri teaching the kids before the humans returned
We could have saw ghe crafting of a bow from hometree and passing down of a cerimonial bow to the boys (whom are explicitly warriors; perhaos Tuk'tirey will be a warrior when she grows up too)
We could've saw in the movie how many plants and animals were being exploited by the RDA for benefits and luxuries on Earth and how workers are treated poorly and exploited for these resources, like
the smuggling of dinicthoid for aquariums
bioluminescent plants smuggled to Earth for jewelry
the experimenting with fngapsutxwll or anemonoid, which is claimed to "[be] studied for possible export to Earth for use in cleaning polluted soil" since it "absorbs small amounts of unobtanium".
Unobitanium minor casualties and suffering, reporting "tactile sensations and distortion in vision and hearing—likely the result of electromagnetic field. Some report disturbing thoughts or compulsions irregular heartbeats limb paralysis muscle tremors or vertigo and nausea".
As for the RDA lore, as bad and greed driven as it already is for the lives it takes and destruction it causes, it would have made the organization more obvious as a metaphor for monopolies and the way they create markets to dominte settler colonial-style rather than just destroying everything for zero reason and only having one market to exploit (capitalists intend to commodify everything not just stop at one thing).
Had their operations been expanded to show how many markets they were controling, the plundering of Pandora for unobtanium (and now the anti aging syrum) could be more obvious metaphors for how companies squander investment in less lucrative but more sustainable alternatives as well as arbitrarily creating scarcity through such markets. The late tho relevant introduction of the whaling fleet in AWOW was an introduction to this as the unsustainable waste and excessive death and cruelty of extracting of venture capitalist markets.
I just wish we could see more care and time taken into the lore of the franchise. I think after AWOW's visual spectacle but lackluster character and lore development, the bar needs to be raised immensely for cultural and narrative immersion.

i live in a universe where if i were to walk down the street i could get murdered willy nilly cos im black but men are out here going around being like “my boyfriend and i met when he was a junior in high school” i don’t believe in jail and i try not to make jail jokes but HOW IS THAT FAIR? JAIL!!! GUILLOTINE!!!! GET THIS MAN A RETIREMENT FUND AND A THERAPIST
that dialogue was fucking embarrassing. he shoulda just said “im 12 yrs older than him” no one needs to know u were 30 dating a 17 year old u insecure freak. retire bitch and get away from her
i wanted muren so badly to be like “LMAO SRY didnt mean to seem surprised i just like men my own age i guess?” i wouldnt have even apologized if i was surprised. my friend was dating someone ten yrs younger than him and i made fun of him for it and he was like “i know” bc he does know.
just a tip: i don’t like getting hit on by men way older than me, a lot of people don’t. i’ve had men who are 36 interested in me when i was 23, and i reciprocated, but now as i am 29 and older i realize how much it confused me and how i didn’t like it.
age gaps are what they are. ther’es many times i do not like it especially if it is a pattern (this is what happens in tv shows and movies and the opposite of that isn’t gay age gaps or power imbalances or women much older than a younger man ok that’s not progress it’s just peopl ewanting to be like cis men and no one wants that) and esp if the person’s peers are all their ages. people seem to forget that we travel in the same social circles on purpose due to our environments and also our world experiences. the only way to meet an older man is outside of school and yet adults can’t seem to control themselves?
i saw this person who was one of the editors of sexual hegemony (a book on capitalism and homophobic laws and sex basically idk google it it’s interesting) and he was trying to have a foucultian outlook (i hate focault btw doesn’t mean what he says wasnt interesting but it does mean i am not okay with psychosexual philosophers who take advantage of people. the only testament against him having reltaions with younger people is a bunch of young people i nfucking tunisia and there’s an excuse that he wasn’t a fucking pedophile he was those ebebebbeopopopo people and it doesnt matter when ur in fucking tunisia as a white french algerian fucking preying on children) how age of consent laws desexualize younger people. they were passed for  abunch of reasons like any law but here is the thing
we have no business in being in spaces to determine children’s sexual identity and teenagers in their own realm. THEY need to figure it out. our job as adults is to PROTECT THEM full stop. not intrude on their lfe and not give them the tools to decide for themselves. age of consent laws are meant to protect not to facilitate children against some boogeyman of sex. the issue is the way our society views it but young people are sexual AS YOUNG PEOPLE. it has NOTHING to do with adults and it shouldn’t. that’s why it is extra fucking intrusive when you are literally wedged into someone’s life who you have no business being around. it’s only by fucking circumstance. it’s abysmal and not cute.
what this tells me is that the age gap is salacious. not in the way that i was 23 and a man was 36. in the way that he was 17 and this dude was 29. that’s interesting right? it’s “oooh” and it means we shouldn’t balk at it. saying 12 years would have sufficed, raises some eyebrows, and we can figure out the dynamics after but you just had to put that in BECAUSE YOU FUCKING LIKE IT but the thing is there’s no part of it that was fun. i’m just going to assume you like fucking teenagers bc that’s what it’s telling me lmao
i rarely talk about this couple but to put them in my eyeballs and then have that stupid conversation it was insulting lmao god please get a fucking script supervisor fuck but none of them care about sotry or any of what i fucking laid out. how stupid and careless and just unfun. i don’t like it. also ew at the idea of 2 tops and 2 bottoms talking oh my god i am gonna give myself a heart attack i’m already so fucking anxious i have to see my family lemme chill
im 29 and feel bad having a crush on a 23 year old CELEBRITY ok and i SHOULD feel ashamed and it’s not even a big deal that’s how everyone should approach life tbqh u walk around like ur 100 yrs old to avoid children. oh what’s that this korean cebrity learned english and moved to america to start a family with me and i find him very hot and i like his voice but we’re 6 years apart i’m not sure if i would work (how fun of a drama would that be. pointless and ridiculous. i love it.)
oh there’s a great review on CMBYN and its history and how the isolation and seeclusion was so fuckign capitalist bougie patriarchy and yea idk if anyone is interested. i think it’s ironic the ending for the people in CMBYN irl bc it’s just. so indicative of this shit. i dont like guadignino (idk is that how u spell his name) and think he’s not a great....person or director (i love the look of suspiria tho likke visually and edited. the DP was thai btw! he did an amazing job!!!) but it critiques this film from a perspective of someone who clearly at least cares about artistry, no matter how poorly i think he executes it, and just how hollow it is. the thing about “escapism” is that it relies on the harsh realities of the world to make it opposite, everything has context, nothing is apolitical. to make something that exists in a vacuum is negligent and it doesn’t help you escape it makes you even more tied to this world and its flaws because it doesn’t do anything to mitigate it.
people view it as like “we can put something stupid on screen and people have to accept it in this world” but that isn’t how IT WORKS. you hvae to build up the stakes of the world. but i can’t see introducing some “taboo” (see: stupid) elements and pretending the escapism is seeing this and allowing it. how could it be when the problem is the nature of the rship itself? what world are you taking us to? and why does this world ignore the pressing realities? and i wouldnt say either of these are explicit escapism (i think i hate that word now) becuase um they arent. this fantastical generally rich people escapism isn’t about bending things that don’t work to mold it into our society because WE DO THAT ALREADY it’s about taking those things and twisting them to something we can accept and like or something that has real consequences for people. it’s so funny how marketing and the idea of pc culture and shit and conservative ideology seeps into these. they have  an explicit interest in holding the status quou of taking advantage of people and using their power; age is a huge structure to do so. in this society when we struggle why would its existence not be challenged? because rape, ridiculous rships, abusive rships, torture etc is a power move, conservatives rest on it and people who gain power. what about that is appealing? making it gay? well, no. especially because men DO have power.
every fucking thing in BL is a reflection of of patriarchy honestly. i can admit that and i’m not okay with it but it’s consumption. there’s a way to make this decent or entertaining without it being so fucking poorly done. and atp i dont even want to call things bl it’s a tv show just bc it’s for a certain audience doesnt mean anything do better idiots

Thank you!! I’m very happy so many people enjoy my blog enough to follow me 💕💕

Tᴏ Kɪʟʟ ᴀ Mᴏᴄᴋɪɴɢ Bɪʀᴅ — How do you feel about common tropes?
If they’re done with new ideas involved, and generally not basically the same thing/can add something to the trope, I think they’re great! Though, a well written overused trope is always better than something poorly written but perhaps using a less than common trope.
Tʜᴇ Hᴏʙʙɪᴛ — Is there a book or author you look to for inspiration? Why that book or author?
I usually look to books I have on my shelf, so books and authors such as Stephen King’s The Colorado Kid and The Shining. Normally I look at them or read some of the book, and then read another book by a different author (such as Frankenstein or Peaches) to remind myself that my writing doesn’t need to be perfect. I look to see how they write, what their sentences look like, how their character’s speaking look compared to action/narration sections. It helps me feel less self-conscious. I mostly focus on Stephen King’s The Shining because it was one of the books my dad kept on his desk constantly when I was a wee small one. Though recently I’ve been looking to The Colorado Kid because I enjoy it greatly.
Tʜᴇ Cᴀʟʟ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ Wɪʟᴅ — Are there any tips for writing you follow? Any common ones you don’t like/use?
One tip I follow is not writing super fancy words. Meaning I try to use more common words that more people are likely to know rather than some alternative Charles Dickens might have enjoyed using. When editing (which honestly I need to do more often) I use the find word tool (control F) and make sure I’m not overusing certain words.
I do outline, but very vaguely. So I’ll have some key points I want in there but I normally let it flow. My outlines always have a set end point, though. Not necessarily when it’s ending but more of what the end of the story will look like, so that I know what to write in order to get to that point. I also listen to music/watch shows in the background while I write. It’s hard and distracting to write in near silence tbh.
One tip I don’t ever follow is letting friends or really anyone help proof read. I enjoy having people read as I write and it does help with my self-consciousness , but I’m too anxious to ask anyone or bother them with my inconsistent schedule. On that note I should really edit my things more. Hmm.
Tʜᴇ Sʜɪɴɪɴɢ — What’s your biggest issue when trying to write? Is there anything that stops your motivation/want to write in its tracks?
Starting. My biggest issue, especially with longer posts, is actually just starting to do it. And THEN I gotta make sure I’m not watching/listening to something that’s gonna distract me. Which normally ends up being something I’ve watched a million times. I also try to eat before hand so I’m not getting up during, if I stop it’s gonna be hard to start back up so I try not to stop and do something that’ll distract me. I do take breaks tho, but I try to write at least a hundred or two hundred words before letting myself look at something else for a minute. Another thing is being stressed out or having a lot to do in a short period of time. If I have a LOT of shit to do I tend to stress out to the point of not doing it because I’m so stressed out. But then I’m even MORE stressed because I’m not doing it. It’s a never ending cycle so I try to avoid this whenever possible.

Quakecon vid notes
This got a lil messy cause they reuploaded and cut the video and I'm too tired to retroactively fix things as the video is no longer two and a half hours long so y'all can just watch the 37 minute video if you really want to
youtube
I'm not sure if I can make a spoiler cut on mobile so uhhjhh,,,,, long post here we go!
Actual start of presentation 24:30

- can use less players if wanted
- 3 difficulty levels
- novice is easier but still hard
- next two levels add a timer
- "its very puzzle based"
- can farm legendaries in the vault
- both mid vault and end rewards
- if you get mid reward and die you keep it
- end reward is mossy/fern-covered armor and power armor
(one piece per run?)
- set bonus
- armor is usable in nw
- second vault raid comes out in the "not too distant future"

Some character concept designs at 21:25
I love the lady at 21:44
Dialogue trees 22:50
- affected by your S.P.E.C.I.A.L.s
- diff levels of diff S.P.E.C.I.A.L.s will give you more or different dialogue options
-diff chars will have diff options available to choose
- some choices will appear depending on your reputation with diff factions
- not the fallout 4 dialogue system
- more like fallout 3 dialogue system

COMPANIONS 24:18

- can see event times/rewards from map
- seperate public events from regular events
Nuclear winter change 29:23
- perk choosing
-- if you get a duplicate perk card in NW you instead get a ticket to buy perks with
More wastelanders 30:07
- some level normalization stuff
(I dont get it too much but ehh)
30:49 LEGENDARY PERKS
- this might change
- approx every 50 levels you can "choose a S.P.E.C.I.A.L. to get legendary in and then within that S.P.E.C.I.A.L. you're gonna have an array of Perk Cards you can choose from just for that slot"
- can use these perks on new characters as well as the one that earned the perk
32:25 community questions
- they check the bethesda forums and the reddit for feedback
- working on a public test server or some other thing
- if they nerf something they're gonna try to buff something else
- looking at ways to increase the C.A.M.P. budget
-
(ran out of room on a single memo thingy)
- looking into private servers <3
-- "coming in the near future"
---"they're coming sooner than you think"
(They uhhh look like they're in trouble for saying ANYTHING about private servers)
(Started talking about faschnaught type events but the official vid got cut off here?)

Multiples of 10 for the Dangan ask thing!
Under the readmore!!!
10. What would be your Ultimate Title?
Ultimate Good But Not Great. I don’t actually know.
20. Who do you think is an overrated character?
For dr1, Junko, Ishimaru, Celes, and Kirigiri. For dr0, Junko. For sdr2, Nanami, Gundam, Souda, and Mikan. Also Junko. For DRAE, Junko. For Killer Killer, Junko. For dr3, Nanami. And Junko. For v3, Ouma and Maki. And Junko.
30. Which character would’ve deserved to survive?
In v3 I felt like every character who died deserved to survive more than the actual survivors. :’D
In dr1, um… Ehhhh? I mean obviously they all deserve to live but the story isn’t worse for any of them dying. Ishimaru’s death could’ve been less unceremonious, I suppose.
In sdr2, they all survive but fucking Saionji still way deserved to make it to the endgame.
In dr3, every character who died except for Chisa and probably Izayoi deserved to survive more than the actual dr3 survivors. (Discounting the dr1 kids. Leave the dr1 kids alone. Sakura didn’t fucking die for this.)
In drae, Taichi. Yuta’s death sucked but it at least left a lasting impact. Taichi just dies for tragedy porn’s sake.
In dr0, FUCKING GUESS. it’s matsuda.
40. Favourite culprit?
I mean… Sakura. Obviously. Or Mondo if we’re talking an actual murderer.
In sdr2, it’s Peko.
In v3, it’s Kaito.
Overall, Sakura and Kaito.
50. Favourite game design?
Uhhhhhhhhhhh.
Sdr2, I think! :’D
60. Saddest moment?
In dr1, Sakura’s letter and the fallout of Chapter 2′s trial, probably. Naegi getting thrown under the bus in Chapter 5 was pretty bad, too.
In sdr2, also the fallout of Chapter 2′s trial. But Hinata’s breakdown in Chapter 6 was really, incredibly heartbreaking! Komaeda also in general… Uuu…
In dr0, Matsuda… Uuu… ;;
In drae, Komaru crying after Touko hugs her. And Nagisa’s breakdown.
In dr3, Juzo’s death is the clear victor. Still cried over Kizakura tho.
In v3, Ouma having his breakdown in Kaito’s flashback. Also Saihara’s downward spiral. Yeah.
70. Character you would have a sleepover with?
Sayaka, Sonia, Koizumi, Komaru, Miaya, honestly Ryouko, Kaede, Tenko, Tsumugi, and Kirumi.
80. Hope or Despair?
Hope for the future!
90. Do you like Junko?
That sure is a question. And this sure isn’t an answer.
100. Opinion on all the Protagonists!
Dr1 - Naegi’s simplicity and resolve are not to be undermined! Just because he’s simple doesn’t mean he’s not a great character and protagonist to follow! He’s absolutely deserving of his role, fuck you!
SDR2 - Hinata is a remarkable foil to Naegi and that he’s more emotionally uncertain and shaky really makes for a character you can resonate with rather be inspired by. That said, the way Chapter 6 uses dead waifu powers to pull him out of rut is a huge misstep when the theme of sdr2 is future. You can’t use the past as a crutch if you’re supposed to move on, y’know?
DR0 - Both Matsuda and Ryouko are fantastic protagonists and focus characters in different ways. Matsuda’s incredibly layered and proactive. And Ryouko gives a very unique perspective and her genuinely fucked up situation makes for some really harsh, heavy, complicated moments. Not to mention the twist at the end which makes matters a lot clearer. Now if fucking only that shitty “all according to keikaku” bullshit wasn’t a thing.
DRAE - Two solid character arcs! For dual female protagonists! That’s really neat! Komaru and Touko are definitely among the strongest parts of DRAE, both as our leads and as their relationship being the emotional core. Pretty satisfying stuff here! Some of the details could’ve been better but overall this is good shit. Even Syo gets some good character moments and character development. It may be the black sheep of the games, but it’s one of the brightest stars in this regard!
DR3 - HAHAHAAAAAA. Naegi literally does close to nothing in the last couple of episodes, Chisa is a shallow fucking plot device and a tool for man pain, and Hinata spends most of this shit MIA and then bursts in at the last minute as a very convenient Deus Ex Machina. Dr3 has no fucking idea how to write a protagonist much less any of its protagonists.
Killer Killer - I only read the second half of this so I don’t have much of an opinion. Whoops. I think Takumi’s at least alright though. I guess. That dumb ending left too much of an impact for me to really think about anything else.
V3 - Kaede was well-written and very dynamic. In Chapter 1. And Chapter 1 alone. Saihara meanwhile, um… Well his character arc is kinda just thrown out the window in Chapter 6 so he doesn’t get any real closure thus no real development. Like he’s still needy, codependent, and still has no idea what to think so he’s just rolling with whatever? Has he really changed at all? I guess he accepts that this is just the kind of person he is, but that wasn’t really what his conflict was even about? Also isn’t it kind of bad to just be like “how I am, flaws and all, is fine”? Like stagnancy is supposed to be a bad thing, right? Also his role as a detective is something he never reconciles with even when it’s continuously forced on him despite how much he doesn’t enjoy it and when it’s something he isn’t even particularly good at? Saihara’s writing is all over the damn place in general so I’d hesitate to even call him a good character but as a protagonist? Yeah he’s weeeeeeeeak. Easily the weakest and poorly defined of the games.

Hi! You mentioned in one of your posts that you're taking a class that makes you think about the relationships between American school and American government, and that sounds a lot like a class that I would be interested in. What class is it? I'd like to see if I can find something similar. I'm trying to train myself to think critically about debate and politics and culture and... all the things that help people understand complex issues. Do you have any other suggestions of places I could go?
Hmmmmm…. This is… going to be a bit difficult.
Ok, for one thing, it’s a grad course at my local university, and the program I’m in is Masters of Arts in Teaching. It’s not really one out of a standard class set.
For another: while the class has spent some time focused on how government, democracy, and policy affect schools, the actual goal of the class is to examine how media representation presents schools, and how that affects people’s attitude towards schooling and teaching.
However, I can probably recommend some reading.
Here’s an online course I am kind of curious about. It sounds more relevant to what you’re looking for than my class, I’d say. You will be able to audit the course (the certificate for a verified course usually costs some money, but the audit is free).
Check out other courses on edX, too: it’s a good site for online learning, basically a pool of free online courses made public by various universities. (Harvard also offers a course on American Government, which I’m enrolled in for shits and giggles, but haven’t done more than take a cursory look at thus far.)
Here’s a link to a google drive folder that contains some articles from my class, if you’re curious. I would say some of them are pretty good reading, but I’ve listed a basic summary of each one I uploaded below the cut. I haven’t gotten to all of them yet, though, so I can’t actually be 100% accurate about what’s in each.
Now, of course, since it’s academic writing, quite a bit of it is pretty dry and dense, which especially applies to the first three listed here:
The Hochschild files (read): discuss how, in theory, education and democracy/social structure should interact and better each other.
(A required text for my class, one which unfortunately you have to pay for: Is Everyone Really Equal? by Sensoy and DiAngelo)
(if you’re curious, that link is for Teacher College Press, they have an ebook for a grand total of $27.96. They’re also the only ones I’ve seen offering an ebook. You will need another app, though, to actually read the file: ADE)
Anyon is a study of 5 elementary schools which shows how education is stratified by social class.
Brookings “Big Government” explains (loosely) how the government funds programs.
Democracy and Freedom (FH-FITW) index (read): these are pretty clear, though—it’s the study that compares democracy and freedom between countries. You might’ve seen a post running around tumblr that says, for a country with such a loudly touted democracy, the US sure scored a bit low—this is that source.
American Citizenship “Counting on Character” is an article on a charter schools
Larabee (read): is about the differences between public and private education. This one plays into our actual course goal a bit, because the entire business of school reform is criticised right there on the very first page, as it’s a very media/propaganda-directed process.
Measuring Democracy (read): is godsawful dry. This was mainly assigned to give us an idea of how many types of democracy there are actually. As such, our assigned reading was pg.253-end, so, don’t fall asleep.
A couple of nytimes articles are listed: First Amendment Support and Preparing Students for a Complex World (read), highlighting some interesting generational differences between current teachers/adults/millennials and Gen Z kids. Surface stuff, tho, like our preferences for social media, concern for privacy, and interpretation of the First Amendment—less about why these differences exist.
Parker Against Idiocy (read): before you go getting any ideas about what idiocy is, in the context of this paper—
Idiocy shares with idiom and idiosyncratic the root idios, which means private, separate, self-centered — selfish. “Idiotic” was in the Greek context a term of reproach. When a person’s behavior became idiotic — concerned myopically with private things and unmindful of common things — then the person was believed to be like a rudderless ship, without consequence save for the danger it posed to others. This meaning of idiocy achieves its force when contrasted with politēs (citizen) or public. Here we have a powerful opposition: the private individual versus the public citizen.…An idiot is one whose self-centeredness undermines his or her citizen identity, causing it to wither or never to take root in the first place.
Putting Democracy Back into Public Education (read): bit of an economic perspective, and a focus on why democracy should be a focus in schools.
Westheimer and Kahne: more on what makes a good citizen
Young Citizens and Civic Learning: another research paper, on how to teach civics in the digital age.
To be honest, I don’t know precisely how much these readings line up with your interests? They’re mainly theoretical, and mostly geared towards pedagogy. Some make for pretty good reads, tho.
I’ll probably add some more as we go through the class, and as I do my own research, but I’m leaning more towards curriculum structure/design at the moment. Plus, there’s the finicky part where my content area is mathematics… and that’s not… precisely… very policy related.
… CORRECTION: Math content is heavily politicised and people keep trying to regulate math education and curriculum structure and keep trying to reinvent the wheel, here. But in the more general sense, while it’s an example of policy impacting schools and teaching, it’s less about government control of a school as a whole.
Basically what I was trying to say there was it’s less relevant to my class, but it would serve as a good, and very in-depth case study, if you were looking for a very specific example.
The things to keep in mind: what you’re looking at is a highly intersectional topic. So many things have an impact on the way we teach: media reporting on teaching and current events, economic goals and its current state, policy, etc.
Fun fact: you know how we rank countries by the number of students who pass standardised exams out of high school, yeah? Well. A side-by-side comparison of the exams and the topics tested actually shows that the questions European countries consider ‘qualifying’ are easier: they test lower-level topics than the US exams.
What does that tell you?
It’s a stupid, non-standardised study, your groups are non-comparable, your variables have no damn relationship to each other.
But someone reports that the US is lagging behind in Math and STEM becomes a huge deal and Music and Art programs are poorly funded and businesses like Pearson benefit because they have a monopoly on tests, and we push kids into STEM fields because that’s feeding the current job market to bloating while telling them they can’t get a job with a liberal arts degree.
Furthermore, education is an immensely powerful tool. It has been used (still is!) to destroy upward mobility for the working class, for people of colour, for people in poor rural areas. You can harm so many people by simply not mentioning something (erasure), and hey, it’s not like teachers get much time anyway because they’re supposed to be preparing their students for qualifying exams that permit the kids to advance to the next year.
And let’s not forget that at some point it was a popular notion that these exam results would be used to control teachers’ pay. The exams weren’t even designed to be used for that.
So, everything you’ve ever learned about setting up scientific studies and doing statistical analysis? Yyyyeaaah… well the current White House sure ain’t heard of it, you can bet your last dime, but whoever was doing studies on education before them also sure as shit was not the CDC.
Just.. every now and then, stop, breathe, throw out everything you know, and then keep going.

8 Online Retailers You Should Never Order From
Tumblr media
Even those folks UN agency think about ourselves savvy once it involves on-line looking is also liable to the most recent spherical of compelling e-commerce scams flooding the web.
That's as a result of AN array of on-line retailers primarily based abroad (frequently in China) square measure tempting our budget-minded vogue consciousness with deals that seem eye-popping sensible, on garments that square
measure right trend and super cute… per the photos accustomed to market them.
But it seems — as several recent examples have shown — that those deals will merely be too sensible to be true, and people persuasive photos square measure simply ripoffs from legit retailers.
MORE FROM WOMAN'S DAY
We created Nina Nesbitt Say A Naughty Word 😈
Burned shoppers report a variety of issues like receiving things manner off scale from the dimensions they ordered, waiting months for things to arrive (when the event that they'd needed the wardrobe had long past), to discovering the item was unsatisfactory — however, finding the comeback method high-ticket or not possible. Some even report having their MasterCard data purloined and used abroad when the acquisition.
Even the execs are not proof against the pull of those sites: shopper and money-saving knowledgeable Andrea Woroch says she too fell victim: "I ordered a piece of jewelry that took nearly 3 weeks before it came across my house and therefore the price to come back ship these things created the comeback method nearly pointlessly!"
Justin Lavelle, the communications director for the on-line background check platform BeenVerified, says patrons should mind. "There square measure several overseas wear corporations these days giving [what they advertise as] beautiful and classy garments for next to nada," he says. "They show pictures of the garments on models that look wonderful. however what you see on their web site and what you get square measure sometimes 2 various things — low-cost materials, chimerical filler, and not possible returns and refunds."
Lavelle advises shoppers to shield themselves by jutting to well-known U.S. corporations — and firms with positive reviews. Then, he suggests, familiarise yourself together with your chosen company's filler chart, moreover as its come back policies, to create certain the window is satisfactorily long to finish a dealing.
Jeremy Gin, UN agency is that the co-founder and corporate executive of the review tool SiteJabber, adds that buyers ought to use caution once coming into MasterCard information. "We continually advocate that if you are doing plan to get from an internet merchandiser, use a serious MasterCard with robust fraud protection," he says. "Your Mastercard company is AN ally if one thing goes wrong. {you will|you'll|you'll be able to} kindle a chargeback and that they can shield you from different unscrupulous charges."
Gin additionally suggests following your gut once tiny details appear off. "Check all foreign sites for professionalism: Typos, unhealthy synchronic linguistics and poor style will all be indicators of an internet business that may not supply its customers decent expertise."

Overall, all of the consultants we tend to interviewed echoed an equivalent refrain: "You sometimes get what you acquire," and "If it appears too sensible to be true, it in all probability is."
With that being aforementioned, here square measure some corporations to steer further from in spite of what. (Of note, many square measures in hand by an equivalent shady and shape-shifting company Shenzhen Globalegrow E-Commerce Co. Ltd., additionally referred to as world Egrow.)

2. Wish.com

3. FashionMia.com

4. SammyDress.com

Nearly 600 reviewers out of 830 on SiteJabber provides it the bottom doable rating, citing problems like "cheap quality" and "refused to resolve a mistake." It appears like Zaful ought to be renamed "awful" supported client expertise.
