TW for joking mentions of romance-novel smut

Leo had never seen someone work as hard as Finn O’Hara. He saw it in the straight line of Finn’s back and the solid set of his shoulders, even when he was calm. He saw it in everything he did—in love and, up until recently, in hockey. He was unequivocal dedication, embodied.

He was sure Finn would say the same about him; he was sweet like that, pretty face and prettier words that were always so honest they made Leo’s ribs hurt with the pounding of his heart. Finn liked to call him brave. Leo had started believing it after the last decade had proven it true in more ways than he cared to count.

And, Christ, Leo counted everything. Endless cycles of goals-assists-saves-loss-win-horror-victory that left him bolting upright at two o’clock in the morning well into his first season of retirement. Netminders kept perfect track of the game and every player coming at them. Remus’ mental playbook of every player in the NHL was only uncanny because he was out of the goal. Leo still remembered the tics and tells of most everyone he’d ever faced.

But what was there to count, now? Beautiful mornings? Those happened every day, though he hadn’t been awake for sunrise in three blessed years. Exotic vacations? He had a wonderful time on their honeymoon (all three of them), but he’d always prefer visiting one of their families.

The pan sizzled softly when he flipped the bagel with a practiced flick of the wrist. Leo smiled to himself. Maybe he should start counting Finn’s annual bacon-egg-and-cheese total. He’d probably come up with the same number if he bought a calendar and ticked the days by hand.

Finn’s commitment to his mid-morning snack was rivaled only by his unwavering passion for bodice-ripper novels, and the evidence of said passion filled their kitchen with a flurry of furious clicking while Leo slid the bagel carefully onto a plate.

See, Leo thought it was a joke, at first. A funny little prank Finn was playing on his new rookie roommate, tucking raunchy paperbacks into the bookshelf between Brontë and Dickens to make him blush. Har-dee-har-har, you got me, I’m such a prude.

Finn had not been joking.

And then it was endearing, like all the other Finn-isms of which he was so fond. It was just…such a silly hobby for an athlete—a former frat boy, no less!—to have in an environment like the NHL. It felt absurdly right that Finn, with his big smile and open heart, would unabashedly love books with oil-paint cover art of a lady fainting into the arms of a conveniently topless bodybuilder. Leo had tucked it into his heart and let it lie.

Finn retired.

Finn was utterly horrific at sitting still.

Finn started with Marie Adkins’ 1942 classic A Rogue for a Lady and ended with Eleanora Zimmerman’s yet-unpublished installment of Zoe Cross’ Cross-Continental Affairs: Volume III, officially clearing the romance collections of all three public libraries near them. His whoop of joy when Ms. Zimmerman answered his email inquiry with a PDF of her manuscript had startled Logan so bad he spilled coffee across the kitchen island and into his lap.

But reading—devouring—the books wasn’t enough. Finn’s systematic rip-through of every literary soap opera he could get his hands on came with an elaborate Goodreads account as well as a nightly debrief.

Leo fucking loved it. Listening to Finn parse out his opinions like an Ivy League lecturer quickly became the best part of his day, especially when the season wound down. It was permanence and consistency while his head whirled with thoughts of this one, just this one single last year and then I’ll really be done, this time for sure. Finn loved hockey like everything else: with no holds barred. He left it, and he was okay. More than okay—he was thriving.

But no hobby was without its faults.

So fucking stupid, Finn had muttered with a sharp shake of his head. I just can’t. It’s a disappointing plot and, worst of all, it’s poorly paced.

Leo and Logan had shared a look across their spaghetti. Finn could give no greater insult to books known for their overdramatic style than ‘poorly paced’.

Well, Logan had said, carefully, almost casually. We all know you’d write it better.

Damn right I would, was Finn’s forceful answer as he stabbed a noodle onto his fork.

Then do it.

Leo had to admit even now that he hadn’t expected that. Perhaps he should have, from Logan. There’s an issue? Solve it. His ‘no more running, no more bullshit’ oath when they were first starting latched into most things he did.

Finn had wavered about it for three days. Once (and only once) he nudged Leo awake at 7:30 in the morning, still sweaty from his run, to ask him if he thought publishing under his real name was a bad idea. He had been forced to mull that one over on his own when Leo banned him from post-shower, mid-coffee cuddles for the crime of dripping sweat onto his pillow.

Finn decided to start writing a book on a Thursday morning in the middle of March, bought a new notebook and a nice pen, and promptly didn’t write a word until his birthday in August.

I’m a failure, he had moaned into Leo’s chest, half-suffocated by the thick fabric of his hoodie. I’m so stupid.

No, baby, you’re not stupid, Leo had soothed. It was a little hard to breathe with the full weight of him splayed useless across Leo’s body, but that was nothing new.

I’ll never write a word. I’m cursed to keep reading forever and being mad about shitty romance with bad, boring characters. The 70s did it best.

Leo remembered sighing in sympathy. But they’re all straight.

But they’re all fucking straight! Finn had groaned. He didn’t move from his puddle of misery and writer’s block until Logan came home and knocked on the back of his head with a pack of pre-sharpened pencils and a cow-print composition book.

Goodreads reviews became graphite smudged on Finn’s hands and cheeks. Small spiral notebooks cropped up around the house, and eventually settled as Finn’s stalwart companions on his morning jogs. When the pencils wore down to nubs, he bought the crappiest pen Leo had ever seen in his life—when that ran dry, he bought another, and a third, and then all the notebooks grew into a teetering tower on Finn’s desk overnight.

A stapler followed, and red pens.

March rolled around again and the tapping of Finn’s laptop became a comforting ‘hello’ when Leo came home from practice. Finn didn’t talk about his book, but Leo didn’t mind. As long as Finn was happy, he could be patient, even if curiosity chewed at him day and night.

When do I get to read it? Leo had finally begged in the heat of June, turning over in bed four nights after his final NHL game. He was restless already and hardly sleeping. He needed something other than endings to occupy his mind.

Finn had smiled at him. The point of his nose pressed to Leo’s. I sent the manuscript out last week. The first copy is yours, Peanut.

Leo had kissed him for that most thoroughly.

“Hello, there.”

Leo smiled into a hidden freckle behind his ear and wrapped his arms around Finn’s chest, giving him a squeeze. “Hey.”

“This for me?”

“You sound surprised.”

“Yeah.” Finn’s head rested back on his shoulder. Leo took the weight happily. “But not really. Ugh, my eyes hurt.”

“Wear your glasses.”

“I wore them yesterday.”

“Didn’t realize they had a recharge time.”

“You know, plastic and glass can be really high-tech these days.”

Leo covered Finn’s eyes with one palm; his lashes fluttered and his chest shook with a laugh. “Glasses,” he insisted, dragging his hand up to Finn’s forehead to tilt his face all the way up and meet his gaze. “Keep this shit up and I’m not putting special sauce on your bagel sandwiches anymore.”

Finn’s soft doe eyes went bright. “What special sauce?”

Leo quirked a brow at him. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”

“C’mon, that’s not—”

“Glasses or I eat it and you never, ever get to try it.”

Finn gasped. “You’re starving me.”

“That’s exactly what I’m doing.”

“Fucker.”

“You’re just mad yours never turn out as good as mine.”

“Poltergeist.”

“It’s because you don’t heat the pan enough.”

“I do!” Finn protested, sitting up and turning sideways in his chair to face him. “I did everything right when you showed me. It doesn’t taste right.”

Leo shrugged. “You’re cursed. Sucks to suck.”

Finn groaned and thumped his forehead against Leo’s collarbone. The hair at the back of his head was soft when Leo scratched through it; the muscles of Finn’s neck relaxed on a slow exhale.

“Same or new?”

“New,” Finn mumbled.

Leo hummed. For three weeks, he had been waiting for Finn to scatter his attention to the handful of ideas that had been left in the void. He refused to send books to his publisher until he could read them aloud to his captive audience of two without turning five shades of red and blowing a frustrated raspberry at the draft. Many had not yet passed that test. “From your list?”

“Nah.”

He nuzzled his nose into the top of Finn’s head. “ ‘S it about, then?”

“A prince.” Finn raised his head slightly. A kiss found the neckline of Leo’s shirt. “And a knight.” A second alit on his bicep, lingering long enough to feel his lips move. “And the sun.”

“That’s cheating,” Leo whispered through his smile. “You’re not supposed to write about us.”

“The New York Times bestseller list disagrees.” Finn lifted his head. His nose scrunched. Confidence rouged his cheeks, and Leo wasn’t a writer, but he’d pen poetry about that any time. “My self-imposed rules can wait. I have a good feeling about this one.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah.” Finn raised his eyebrows and leaned close like he had a secret. The plate with his cooling sandwich chimed at a tap from his pen. “It’s funny. Something tells me they’re gonna end up together in the end.”

Leo looked at him for a long moment, then darted a kiss to the bridge of Finn's nose. "Are you putting porn in it?"

"Are you going to let me eat my bacon-egg-and-cheese with the special sauce that you made because you love me so much and you think I'm so cute and sexy?"

"Yes."

"Sunshine, I will write all the porn you want."

"Hmm." Leo let his eyes drift to the laptop screen (just a little peek, a tiny one, not even a real spoiler) but Finn's hand lowered it before he could catch more than a glimpse. He made a disgruntled noise and straightened. Foiled again. "Wear your glasses and I'll make you one tomorrow, too."

deciding on my college was also rlly difficult for me :'') i took like a good month to weigh in all my acceptances and eventually went to the one i felt the most comfortable at and thought would be the best for me <33 omg yeah my high school was pretty competitive so quite a few people got into ivy leagues, but everyone was surprised that that one boy turned down harvard bc he's always had high ambitions and is a genius 😳 but i think it all came down to finances and he's happier at the college he ended up choosing tbh so i'm glad for him 🥰 plus ivy leagues are corrupt and scary and i don't think i want to go to a university where the student climate is so cutthroat LMFAO 

god yeah my thighs are dying rn <//3 i hiked 16 miles with my friends once and tbh that was the worst HAHAH i was fine for the 7(??) ish miles there but walking back was sooo painful + 2 of those miles was on sand so it was a struggle. i don't think i could walk properly for 3 days after that HAHAH and i cut my ankle mid-hike so 🤕 2-3 hours ??? god i would fall asleep or something i could never 😭

How would you ranked all the first eliminated girls/guys? For cycles 3 and 20 you can count both eliminatees but not cycle 10 since Kimberly (R.I.P) was a quit and not All stars Brittany as well.

C2. in what position do they sleep?

Cassia: the sky diver: A skydiver sleeps on their stomachs, head to one side, with their arms wrapped around behind a pillow

Elias: the log roller: The sleeper rests on their side, legs extended straight and arms in place

Violet: the sleepy soldier: A person that sleeps in the sleepy soldier position sleeps on their back, with their arms straight down at their side 

C5. who is the best at comforting them when down?

Cassia: her crew tbh. the more people she has around her to distract her from her own thoughts the better! but she especially appreciates pallegina & aloth on their own too Elias: no one really does, because he won’t show you that he’s down? he is the one that comforts others, making you comfort him seems like a burden he doesn’t want you to have. he does have his brother icar though <3Violet:her sister ivy, kaidan, sometimes tali, too. she would rather isolate herself than being with a lot of people, especially if she’s down. so she only has a handful of people who comfort her like that.

D4. what type of clothes and accessories do they wear?

Cassia: extravagant, sexy, she usually has something green on her, corsets, long boots, lot’s of golden rings, necklaces, earrings and general accessories, big fancy hats, lose blouses, a sword and two blunderbusses are always on her, she shows a lot of skinElias: simple and comfortable. he has to be able to travel with them but also fight and jump around with his clothes without any problems. no armour because he’s a monk. natural colours. leather bracelets, no sleeves, no shoes. often has his chest exposed and literally only wearing baggy pants, especially if he’s training. his long dreads are usually tied into a ponytail with a simple piece of leather because of practicality.Violet:she wears her black/red n7 armour most of the time, or her uniform. on shore leave she wears dark pants, light tank tops and her leather jacket. friends make fun of it sometimes because it’s always the same one, but it’s like a comfort jacket to her which holds special meaning in her eyes. no accesories, hair tied into a bun most of the time.

Cassia: the way she carries herself? she knows she is sexy and she shows it: through her posture, her smile or even her eyes.Elias: his muscles or his hair is probably easiest to spot, but actually it’s his smile! it’s bright, charming and genuine and makes you smile, too.Violet:she has incredible full and kissable lips

G3. what benefits come with being their friend?

Cassia: what is cooler than being a part time pirate with her tbh? you can hang around with her on her ship and see the world. wants you to enjoy yourself. doesn’t really judge. you’ll probably wake up one day with golden accessories around your neck and on your hair (she doesn’t like to share anything. but she makes exceptions for her buddies), you might think she is a self preserving part time coward but she will be brave for you, amazing storyteller, you’ll be amazing at spotting liars after a while cause she lies all the time.Elias: he will take care of you and make sure you’re comfortable and happy at all times!!! amazing listener! has fascinating stories to share himself if you’re interested! wise! will also punsh people into the face for you! if talking didn’t do the trick ofcViolet:no one fucks with you if you’re next to her because she exhibits big dick energy. real and honest. doesn’t lie or sugarcoat things. kind and respectful towards you. your adulty friend who takes charge and is responsible. badass with a big heart vibes. always knows what the right thing to do is. will awkwardly dance with you and not care how she looks like while doing it. you can see space with her on her spaceship and honestly, goals.

Cassia: BESIDES of the fact that i’m a big pirate stan, hmm… cassia is cocky as hell and does and takes and says whatever she wants, which was super fun for me to roleplay! she exhibits a lot of piraty stereotypes because i love them, like being selflish or self-preserving, but i love that she is a cipher and because of that always was connected to people and cared a bit more than your regular raider which is i think my most favourite thing about her and something i always kept in mind while roleplaying too!! i just love her sm!!!!!Elias: ummm he’s literally an aasimar angel with WINGS. if i would ever get to actually play him i would probably always wait for the opportunity to get them out lmao. if i would need to pick one thing tho i would probably go something backstory related, which is that his biggest strengh ended up to be his biggest downfall (to keep it short he was nice to somebody and they fucked him over). he has to deal with that and fix this now. it’s my favourite thing because i’m usually not a fan of good & perfect characters, but twisting tiny things like that makes me stan very hard.Violet:shepard is THE QUEEn. i love everything about her idk what my favourite things is!! one of the most self sacrificing people you will ever meet! a boss as bitch!! she is so strong-willed which is probably the thing i would pick. she literally died and still continued on. i love her!!

probably something like neutral good leaning towards chaotic good. somewhat more mild than her Friends but definitely more willing to lean into the unhingedness later in her life....

She's pretty confident in her interpretation of things in most situations but willing to politely entertain the possibility of being wrong (PERHAPS just to double up on the No, Youre Still Wrong factor. don't worry about it)

i think she compromises an almost-healthy amount usually LOL example: not enough to not tell faust to fuck off and feel the hatred but enough to not stop speaking to him altogether. BAD example: fuck you military men you'll never take me and my office's 10 bottles of low dose painkillers alive.

A16: Does your OC have to go through their own trials to learn a lesson, or do they listen and learn from observation and lecture? I.e., does your OC listen when someone tries to tell them the importance of budgeting, or do they have to go experience what happens if you don’t budget first?

ugh LOL i mean evidently she's learned a lot on this entire region zero experience of hers and paid with her life </3 she has a relatively good head on her shoulders and usually doesn't need to be told a lesson more than once, but she does have an excess of confidence and eagerness to do things that're out of her scope (only one way to find out if its REALLY out of her scope right?)... just her and her hubris-i-mean-humanitarianism against the world.

A24: What are some of your OC’s biggest personal obstacles? This could be emotional, physical, social… Are they aware of it? Are they trying to overcome it?

she struggles far more than she typically lets on. next-level homesickness, ambivalence towards faust, daily reminders of her impending failure (politically and professionally)..... all on top of the typical troubles and stresses of living in region zero LOL. she's trying her best every day but shes quite depressed.

B8: Is your OC considered funny? Do they believe they’re funny?

shes not particularly funny and doesnt believe herself to be, but i think shes the type of person who's accidentally funny and catches everyone off guard.

B13: Do they have a large or small group of friends?

i think she gets a lot of attention from her commie doctor peer circle for her Unique Perspective As An Outsider and gets approached by a lot of people, but her actual friend circle is pretty much limited to selma and leslie + maybe a few others as more distant friends. shes quite a private and introverted person on a personal level and selma and leslie are....protective LOL

C2: Would your OC feel bad if they acted against their morals? If not, would they find a way to excuse themselves for it?

earlier on Yes she'd feel bad, later on No. Sacrifices must be made right??? *grits teeth so hard*

C7: Do they believe people change over time? If so, is it a natural process or does it take effort? 

She believes its a process that takes effort, yes. does she think most people are willing to make that effort? well.....

D3: How comfortable are they with the idea of death?

Not particularly comfortable but i suppose she knows how to approach the topic with others considering her career. in terms of her own death i think she begrudgingly accepted somewhat early on in her time in region zero that she was going to die there (for her career basically but HOPEFULLY something bigger than that), but as conditions worsened i think that realization scared her more than anything. i think that fear made her more serious about Arming Herself despite the controversy of it all, and clearly she was not afraid to use said arm. she'd think that the way she died was really stupid and useless though. i think anyone who makes such an ordeal of going where No Canadian Has Ever Gone Before and doing What No One Would Dare To So Selflessly Do would wish for anything but such a QUIET and sudden death. well heres for hoping the other twin has some luck with that :)

E4: Did they enjoy school if they went to it?

Yea absolutely. definitely the studious type. type of person who's said shes wanted to be a doctor since she was like 10 and then actually went and did it.

E6: Do they enjoy learning? Do they actively seek out sources of self-education?

Absolutely, she was more into school for the learning than the social part after all. she's a big reader and was also into research once she got into her career/later college years as well. if anything, region zero is her biggest task in self-education yet.

F2: What’s their ideal home look like? Where is it?

unfortunately she too preferred canada LOL she'd move back there, probably in a house somewhere near where she'd lived before either in toronto or london, maybe in a quiet suburb or somethin but not too far away from a job or other opportunities. if she could take selma nd leslie back with her she would but shes really ok with living alone too. she's not too picky about house styles, just something practical and well-kept.

F4: How clean are they overall with home upkeep?

much neater than her housemates <3 doesn't like cleaning but does it anyway. very organized tho.

F9: Are they homebodies and enjoy being home?

100%..... selma has it hard being the only true extrovert of the household </3 she goes out a healthy amount tho. to thee comrade events and such.

F11: What are some of their favorite things to do for recreation? How did they get into it? What part of it do they like the most?

she hasnt had much free time in years LOL so not much. she enjoys reading, always has. enjoys.......... going to commie community activities....SOMETIMES.

G1: Is your OC close to their family?

moreso before anything went down region zero-ly but pretty close, yea. she never had any issue with anyone besides them being sad she was always so absorbed in her work LOL. nowadays i mean she has faust still but its complicated. YES he is a goddam traitor, BUT who else really understands this exact kind of misery the way he would.

G4: What kind of childhood did your OC have?

like faust's, pretty normal and happy. she was the Good Twin so she had even less issue than he did LOL not as many friends but always relatively well-adjusted. she strikes me as a band/orchestra kid but like....the least annoying one.

H1: What is your OC’s orientation, romantic and/or sexual? Has it ever been a source of stress for them? Have they always been pretty sure of their orientation?

lesbian in the had-bfs-but-obviously-it-didnt-work-out way. so somewhat stressful when she was actually dating long ago but it became less of a source of stress when she became CLEARLY too girlboss and busy for such things. and also apparently everyone is really conveniently faggy in region zero anyway. who woulda thought.

H2: Is your OC a thoughtful partner, in whatever aspect of that you want to cover?

pretty average-ly thoughtful. again i think if she wasnt so busy she might be a little better but its a good thing her Girl Friend is also average-ly thoughtful and too busy LOLL.

H7: What do they look for in partners? (Emotionally, mentally, physically..)

i dont think shes ever actively looking for anything, just someone kinda on the same Level as her and that can respect her space and what she does no matter how..unconventional. someone as low-maintenance as she is LOL. someone who GETS it

she might get bored of it but i think its often just a Survival Task for her to do rather than something she REALLY enjoys nowadays unless its a good day. BUT back in canada im sure she enjoyed a lot of variety.

just as active as selma and leslie are. i think her being an outsider makes this especially dangerous but also especially impactful. it took her a while to really get a grip on wtf was going on politically-speaking in region zero but ofc those two informed her very quickly :) she does care very much about the health crisis and the environmental horrors and the careless government allowing it all and etc tho. she was relatively active in canada too, definitely not like this tho <3

J5: Are they or would they protest for a cause they’re passionate about?

Yes, more through actions than like Demonstrations but she has done both.

J7: How much interest in environmental health do they have?

very much interested, its part of why she moved to region zero WHICH SOUNDS BAD BCZ WHO WOULD SUBJECT THEMSELF TO THAT BUT. health crises and environmental crises go hand in hand it must be studied and remedied!!!!!

L1: How have your characters changed since you created them?

not a ton at all really but i certainly have a clearer idea of what her deal is + her relationships with everyone else..... looking back thru the chat apparently i did not originally have her nd faust being outsiders.....? at least for a little while until i figured out what their deal was. but. thats a pretty major change LOL

L9: How did you come up with your OC?

the early phases of making anyone for this book is a mystery to me..... ik i designed her during inktober tho. i think i wanted someone to be selmas mentor/colleague. despite being more minor of a character she existed in my brain before faust did....
