Had a few more abductions that week.

Auf Wiedersehen, Lilli Pilli

Der letzte Vormittag bei Linda und John vergeht viel zu schnell. Denn es müssen nicht nur alle Koffer geschlossen werden und in Izzie (Kosenamen für unseren Mietwagen) verstaut werden, wir müssen auch noch Strandfundstücke sortieren. Gegen 10 Uhr gibt es noch einmal Tee und Muffins in der Sonne ... und um 10.30 Uhr sind wir unterwegs. Und sagen auch diesmal nicht Goodbye, sondern auf Wiedersehen!

Knapp 300 Kilometer sind es bei Sydney, um 17 Uhr muss der Mietwagen bei Europcar sein. Es gibt einen kleinen Stopp mit Kaffee und weiteren Muffins beim Sublime Outlook, diesmal nördlich von Wollongong. Bald beginnt der etwas zähe Weg durch die Vororte, wir rollen unter der Landebahn des Airports durch einen Tunnel und sind gegen 15.40 Uhr am Hotel.

Nach den wunderschönen Unterkünften, vor allem nach dem Luxus in Brisbane, ist unsere jetzige Behausung ernüchternd: 250 Euro pro Nacht für ein kleines Vierbett-Zimmer, wobei eine Schlafstätte noch zusammengeklappt in der Ecke steht. Aber das Fenster bietet immerhin den Blick auf die Oper und die Harbourbridge ... Tatsächlich war die Suche im Vorfeld schwierig und es gab nicht wirklich viel günstiges nahe dem Zentrum. Was wiederum an der WM, dem großen Lauf am Sonntag etc liegen kann.

Wir geben Izzie punktgenau zurück, danach laufen wir zur Oper und sehen wieder einen dieser sagenhaften Sonnenuntergänge. Allerdings wird es kühl und wir haben nicht viel gegessen. Also bummeln wir in DAS Touristenviertel The Rocks, gegen 18 Uhr sind die Bars recht voll und wir suchen eine Einkehr.Plötzlich stehen wir sehr großen (also: sehr große) sanften Jungs gegenüber. Die Spielregeln: Links dürfen nur Erwachsene in den Hinterhof, weil Bar Rechts dürften wir als Familie zum Mexikaner ... um 18 Uhr! Schräg.

Ausgehungert stranden wir im Pancake House. Später fällt uns auf, dass wir fast die einzigen Gäste nicht-asiatischer Herkunft sind... vermutlich steht der Laden in einem Reiseführer. Die Speisen sind okay, aber nicht wirklich der Kracher, der Service braucht ewig und das in Kombination mit der Touristenhölle des Franziskaner-Oktoberfestschuppens gegenüber ... Nein, es gibt sehr sicher bessere Abendessen in Sydney. Immerhin war es günstig.

Im Dunkeln laufen wir in unser Viertel, da der Botanische Garten geschlossen ist, dauert das etwa 35 Minuten. Potts Point hat viel Art Deco und viele Restaurants, liegt auch direkt am Meer. Und als dann noch ein Feuerwerk nahe der Oper gezündet wird, sind immerhin zwei von vier mit dem Zimmer versöhnt ...

Ok but. I just can't stop thinking about that gift of gab spell, like, it has so much angst potential, and my immediate thought was that after their break up, Loquatius probably used it at least at one point after accidentally admitting out loud to Laerryn that he misses her/he still loves her. (and also consider: him actually saying it, and not using that spell, right at the end, last thing he hears is her saying it back, before it all fades to black?)

ok so heidi and izzie really just came onto critical role for marisha's familiars one shot and were like. our characters will be a yellow dramatic octopus with a bucket named CLAPP and a pseudodragon named Joanne that sounds like Natasha Lyonne and just wants to retire. They're going to be canonically in an open relationship and almost become the adoptive moms of two tiger cubs. Joanne will sing Aerosmith badly to her to calm her down and CLAPP will *not* stop flirting with her. Truly an amazing and galaxy brained move of them

Jemand griff hart in ihr Haar im Nacken. Mit einem unbarmherzigen Ruck wurde ihr Kopf damit nach hinten gerissen. " 'Ayn alkhutat allaeinatu?!" brüllte sie jemand auf arabisch an. Izzy keuchte als man sie mit dem Stuhl nach hinten kippte. Ihre Hände waren fixiert. Ihre Beine ebenso. "akhyraan qawliha 'ayatuha almar'at alghabayatu!!!" Doch Izzy wendete bloß den Blick zur Seite. Aus dem Augenwinkel hatte sie diesen Mann gesehen, wie er mit einem Eimer Wasser und einem Tuch zu ihr zurück kam. Ihr Gesichtsausdruck wurde hilfloser aber sie presste die Lippen und Zähne aufeinander um sich das aufkommende betteln zu verkneifen das in ihrem Überlebenswillen tief verankert war. Denn es gab nur dieses eine Leben für sie. Ihre Nasenflügel blähten sich und sie versuchte in den heftigen, angsterfüllten Atemzüge sich von der Fixierung zu lösen. Ohne Erfolg. Der Mann vor ihr sah sie eiskalt an. Sie sagte noch immer nichts, presste wimmernd die Lippen bloß aufeinander und atmete hektisch durch die Nase ein und aus. Und dann wurde ihr das nasse Tuch ins Gesicht geklatscht. Sie ballte die Fäuste, kniff die Augen zusammen und dann wurde das eiskalte Wasser über ihren Kopf gegossen. Izzy röchelte, würgte panisch. Durch ihren ganzen Körper ging ein energischer Ruck des nackten Überlebensinstinkt. Aber man hielt sie fest. Die Fesseln hielten sie fest. Und erst als man ihr dieses Stück Stoff von ihrem Gesicht zog, atmete sie für einen kurzen Moment nach Luft ringend, und hustend. Doch diese Idylle hielt nicht lange. Jemand packte sie grob am Kiefer und bohrte die dreckigen Fingernägel in die Kuhle ihrer Zähne in die Haut. Verzweifelt hob sie ihr Näschen, keuchte, hustete, immer wieder schnappte sie so unbegierlich wie möglich nach Luft um diesen Männern nicht den Triumph zu geben den sie über sie wollten obwohl ihr ganzer Organismus danach schrie. Ihr ganzer Leib zitterte aber ihre dunklen Augen begegneten diesem Mann. Sie waren noch nicht tod. Er durfte ihr in die Augen sehen, wenn sie verreckte und darin die bittere Erkenntnis ziehen, dass er sich die Falsche auserkoren hatte. Dass sie nichts sagen würde. Selbst wenn es ihr Leben kostete. "Fick dich." flüsterte sie und verschenkte ihre letzte Kraft für diese Worte. Um die Zunge in ihrem Mund zu bewegen und ihre Lippen ausreichend zu öffnen. Viking Queen - Hail to the King

Hail to the King – so möchte man rufen, wenn man sich das gestern (24.03.2023) erschienene Album anhört. Nach Ihrem Debut im Jahre 2020 mit dem Album “Hammer of the Gods” begann für Viking Queen aus Norwegen eine strapaziöse Reise mit vielen Wechseln in der Bandbesetzung. Doch offensichtlich sind die Jungs jetzt am Ziel angekommen.

Der neue Sänger

Vor nicht allzulanger Zeit nahm die Band rund um Manager Geir Miranda den aus Chile stammenden Sänger Francisco Gomez auf – eine männliche Stimme, um die ehemals von Marthe Elisabeth gesungenen Titel weiterzuführen. Nun, das gestaltete sich eher schwierig in Anbetracht der Vorlagen, die ja auf eine weibliche Stimme ausgerichtet sind.

Transformiert

Somit transformierte die 5-köpfige Band kurzerhand von der Viking Queen zum “Viking King”, und das tat der Kreativität der Band offensichtlich sehr gut. Sicherlich ist es von Zeit zu Zeit gut, in ein Album mit Drachen und Königreichen einzutauchen – den aktuellen Zeitgeist spiegelt das allerdings nicht wider. Und genau an diesem Punkt kam die Band Viking Queen nun auch an.

In einem Interview im Frühstücksfernsehen auf der Radiostation Galaxy107fm (Neuseeland) gab Frontmann Francisco preis, das neue Album würde unterschiedliche, persönliche Standpunkte aufgreifen und diese in Songs abbilden. Das Songwriting auf dem Album wurde also aus reinen Geschichtslehrstunden aus der Vikingerzeit mehr ins “heute” portiert. Eine hervorragende Idee, möchte ich meinen.

Die Bandbesetzung

Zur letztjährigen Bandbesetzung aus Francis Gomez (Gesang). Gründungsmitglied Robert “Robban” Hoffstaetter (Gitarre), Andreas Wilhelmsen (Gitarre) und Bassist Roy Sandåker gesellte sich erst kürzlich Schlagzeuger Izzy Prat hinzu. Kurz darauf begannen die Aufnahmen zum Album im “Badabing” Tonstudio” in Norwegen. An dieser Stelle ein dickes Lob an Toningenieur und Produzent Robert Haugen dem es gelungen ist, einen wirklich frischen, fetten Mix mit einer wunderbaren Transparenz an den Tag zu legen.

Aufeinander eingespielt

Zwei der Songs auf dem Album wurden 2022 bereits vorab als Singles veröffentlicht (‘Fight for Glory’ und ‘Attitude’). Ich muss gestehen, dass mich diese beiden Releases vom letzten Jahr nicht einnehmen konnten, was aber hauptsächlich dem mittelmäßigen Soundmix geschuldet war. Offensichtlich wurden beide Tracks jetzt für das Album neu aufgenommen und gemixt – jetzt sitzen sie genau richtig! Offenbar hat es einfach ein wenig Zeit gebraucht, um die doch sehr frische Crew aufeinander einzuspielen.

Altbewährte Riffs im neuen Gewand

Doch nun zu den Songs. Beim ersten Hören der “Hail to the King” Tracks war ich zunächst ein wenig irritiert, denn mit dem ersten Album hat diese Scheibe bestenfalls die harmonische Stilistik gemeinsam, danach hören die Übereinstimmungen auch schon auf. Schlagzeuger Izzy Prat – der ganz offensichtlich aus der progressiven Ecke kommt – spart nicht mit Synkopen und zahllosen Mini-Breaks und Stoppern. Die Gitarrenarbeit war da schon eher gewohntes Gefilde; beide Gitarristen prägen die Songs im Style der 80er (was man auf dem ersten Album bereits wahrnehmen kann). Roy Sandåker am Bass brilliert mit seinem 5-Saiter und füllt die – meiner Meinung nach gezielten Arrangement-Freiräume – gekonnt mit tiefsten, warm klingenden Highlights.

Die große Überraschung

Die größte Überraschung offenbarte mir allerdings Viking Queen Sänger Francisco Gomez. Während er in “Fight for Glory” noch mit klarer Stimme singt, offenbart er ab “Punishment” immer öfter ansatzweise grummelndes Growlen, welches sich von Song zu Song immer mehr ausweitet und auch durchsetzt.

Fight for Glory

Die überarbeitete Version der bereits 2022 veröffentlichten Single und die erste offizielle Zusammenarbeit zwischen Viking Queen und Sänger Francisco Gomez. Höhepunkt des Stilmixes aus Hardrock Bausteinen und durchaus bluesigen Gitarrenparts ist ganz klar der eingängige Chorus.

Punishment

“Punishment” erinnert mich stark an die wohlbekannten Stilelemente der frühen Queensryche, und doch schafft es Francis mit seinen gesanglichen Fähigkeiten den Song für sich zu erobern und etwas modernes, neues daraus zu gestalten.

Freedom is Illusion

‘Freedom is Illusion’ ist als Mitsing-Hymne angelegt und hat genretypisch dementsprechend viele Chorus-Wiederholungen im letzten Drittel des Stücks. Die Gitarrenfraktion beherrscht (wie auch auf den anderen Songs des Albums) ihr Handwerk, hier ist es Schlagzeuger Izzy Prat der den Song mit wohlplatzierten Breaks mehr in den progressiven Stil der Neuzeit führt.

Shadowhunter

“Shadowhunter” ist die Nummer Vier auf dem Album und startet ganz klar mit einem klassischen Blues-Riff. Ab hier passiert es; Francis startet in tieferer, kräftiger Tonlage, arbeitet sich in Mittellage vor. Der Chorus ist ein schöner Ohrwurm, der Songspeed fällt eher balladesque aus. Ein sauber ausgearbeiteter zweistimmiger Gitarrenpart rundet das Erscheinungsbild ab. Dieser Song ist ganz klar mein persönliches Highlight auf der Scheibe. Geschrieben wurde er übrigens vom Urgestein der Band, Robert “Robban” Hofstaetter.

Attitude

Attitude – re-recorded für’s Album – klingt in dieser Version deutlich räumlicher und fährt die bei der Singleauskopplung schmerzlich vermisste Tiefe auf. Meine persönliche Wahrnehmung signalisiert mir allerdings, dass dieser Song aus einem frühen Entwicklungsstadium der Zusammenarbeit stammt. In meinen Ohren “holpert” er mehr als zum Beispiel der nächste Titel. Stilistisch würde er ganz gut auf ein frühes Album von Judas Priest passen.

Valhalla can wait

“Valhalla can wait” – man möchte meinen hier kommt eine Kriegerhymne im Stile von Manowar, was aber weit gefehlt ist. Im Prinzip liegt hier ein Lovesong vor. “… I just wanna spend the rest of my life with you …” heisst es da im Text. Riff, Vers und Prechorus zeigt fröhliche Party Rock Anleihen à la Twisted Sister durchsetzt mit Drumbreaks, die den Songflow immer wieder aufs neue resetten. Im Chorus belohnen Viking Queen den geneigten Hörer mit echter Warrior-Metal Qualität. Zum Ende des Tracks kommen dann Backgroundvocals der ganzen Band ins Spiel mit “Warriors”, “Nordmen”, “Hey” und eher düsteren, grimmigen Klängen unterlegt. Sicherlich ein sehr persönlich interpretierbarer Song. Mir erschließt sich die künstlerische Gesamtaussage momentan noch nicht.

Berzerk

Als siebter Titel findet sich “Berzerk” auf dem insgesamt 44 minütigen Album. Eine geschmeidige Midtempo-Nummer mit einer melodiösen, einprägsamen Gesangslinie. Überraschend ist jeweils die Passage am Ende jedes Chorus’, die in Double Time für die harmonische und melodiöse Abwechslung sorgt.

Gods and Visions

Die Nummer acht – “Gods and Visions” – started mit treibendem Rhythmus und bietet Francis eine gute Gelegenheit, seine Gesangslinie zwischen klarem und growlendem Flavour wechseln zu lassen. Das Arrangement im Chorus ist durchaus dramatisch und auch gelungen. Sehr abwechslungsreich gestaltet, mit Background Vocals, Drumfills, diversen Guitarlicks und Riffs.

Flight of the Valkyries

“Flight of the Valkyries” bewegt sich eher in düstere Gefilde, ich meine, ein wenig Black Sabbath aus dem Rezept herauszuhören. Nach dem Intro wird der Kenner und Liebhaber von Judas Priest ganz sicher Parallelen finden. Allerdings – und das macht es hörenswert – nicht in den klassischen Konventionen, sondern auf eine sehr eigene Art. Hauptsächlich ist es auch hier Francis, der mit seiner Stimme einen sehr eigenen Charakter aufprägt.

Hail to the King

Der letzte Song auf dem Album ist der Titelsong des Albums “Hail to the King”. Hier finden sich all die Elemente, die der Hardrocker von einer Vikingerband erwartet. Stilistisch irgendwo zwischen Iron Maiden und Manowar angesiedelt, legt sich Francis mit klarer Stimme über die ausführlichen Doublebass-Passagen.

Fazit:

Viking Queen – Hail to the King ist ein gelungenes Album, welches dem Hardrockhörer mit frischem, aktuellem Sound und gekonnten, altbewährten Riffs aufwartet. Die Arrangements sind meist unkonventionell, was dem ganzen Album einen sehr eigenen Touch verleiht. Die Gitarrenarbeit ist solide und gekonnt. Wenn auch nur wenige Elemente für den heutigen Standard überraschen, so sind doch unendlich viele kleine, liebevolle Details und eine unbändige Spielfreude zu erhören. Sänger Francis verleiht jedem Viking Queen Song einen Charakter, den ich als einzigartig bezeichen möchte. Aus klanglicher Sicht ist der Band und dem Tonstudio mit diesem Album ein echtes Meisterwek gelungen.

Wie bei vielen großen Bands geschieht hier ganz klar eine Orientierung und musikalische Entwicklung in die richtige Richtung. Ganz persönlich möchte ich mir mehr von Francis’ agressiven Gesangselementen gepaart mit zweistimmigen Gitarrensoli wünschen. Viking Queen – Hail to the King ist ganz klar das Album einer Band auf dem Weg zu echter Größe.

Campaign Intros: North Pines Camp

having gone through all my PCs, let's dive into the campaigns they come from!

North Pines Camp, a Monster of the Week campaign, was my first time ever playing a ttrpg. the campaign was short and sweet, only running 10 sessions, and my notes are absolute trash. did i memorialize some funny out of context quotes and snapshot moments? you betcha! did i manage to write down enough info to reconstruct the basic mysteries we solved? yes, barely. did i bother writing down anything about my fellow PCs? except for the fact that one of them likes chips on their sandwiches, nope! did i bother noting where the camp actually is or anything about its layout or the nearby town? also nope! did i do anything to help me remember who NPCs were or what they looked like? not really!

this campaign happened, like, five + years ago now. i have played four five other campaigns in the meantime. my memory isn't very good in general, but between the time and bad notes, my memory of this campaign is very minimal. any story times from North Pines Camp will be very brief and won't have a lot of context because i don't know either

but ~anyway~

the setting

North Pines Camp (NPC) is a children's summer camp in (i think) central Oregon, USA. once upon a time it was a training grounds for monster hunters, but it's been 100% properly converted now. definitely. no banjo-playing vampires or child-stealing witches in the woods. nope. not here

the camp is set up on the north end of a lake, and there's another camp on the other side of the lake called South Pines Camp. there's a stable and places to play sports, and a few different activity lodges. Saraki Lodge hosts dances. Newman has a variety of board and card and other tabletop games, including a strange Cards Against Humanity set that seems to have come from another dimension with its own incomprehensible memes. somewhere i think there's also a theatre and an arts and crafts room? and of course a cafeteria/mess hall and nurse's station. and a big garden!

there's also a small town nearby that might be called Acorn. fewer than four thousand people live there, and it's also haunted. cool places to hang out include the Acorn Museum and the abandoned combo KFC/Pizza Hut

the other PCs

Izzy: played with the Spell-Slinger playbook, i think. a fellow camp counselor. she has long blue hair, eats tomatoes like they're apples, and likes her cereal with orange juice. she also eats raw eggs. she once got possessed by a ghost in the abandoned KFC/Pizza Hut and helped him fulfill his dying wish of eating fried chicken

Malcolm: played with the Mundane playbook, i think. a fellow camp counselor. he has brown hair and green eyes and likes chips on his sandwiches. at one point he dresses up as a girl (to try to trick a lonely banjo-playing vampire into kidnapping him shh it makes sense in context) and, while pretending to be a girl, refers to Indie as his boyfriend

the NPCs of NPC

Lawrence: a camp administrator with a spooky personal cabin in the woods where he keeps a bunch of stuff from the old camp. lots of weapons, a monster manual poorly co-written by the original camp's three founders, stuff like that. i think he was magical in some way bc i have a random note about his arm turning to silver but literally nothing else about him during that mission. he has a walking stick that, and i quote from my notes, "is actually a deer"

Gabby: another camp admin who knows about the monster stuff. her DJ name is DJ Gabby Gabs. i think she was normally the one telling us to go investigate things

Gabe O'Malley: the only one i have a last name for? like i said, my notes for this campaign are terrible! he's another camp admin and has his own cabin, where the wifi is named "mancave dog chow." he helped us identify some magical items. that's it that's all i wrote about him

Eugene: some sort of authority figure, or maybe custodial staff? he likes pickles. 9:30 (am? pm? idfk) is Eugene's pickle time. he has a secret fridge in Newman that's literally just filled with pickles. all of the notes i have referencing him are about pickles.

Preston: the head chef. he's got a weed stash somewhere and has a personal mini fridge equipped with a polaroid camera to catch thieves. Indie once stole something from his fridge and then stole the polaroid of himself stealing things

Baltimore: a fellow counselor and the campaign butt monkey--we made fun of him a lot. to be fair, he made himself very easy to make fun of. a lifeguard at the camp and elementary education major who slathers himself in way too much sunscreen and puts way too much mayo on his sandwiches. he's lactose intolerant, and his favorite dessert is vegan cheesecake. his favorite game is jenga. he likes both Neutral Milk Hotel and Mariah Carey. at one point we accused him of having a foot fetish. as a side note, he's 5'8" with "tousled black hair" and frequent bags under his eyes, which makes him sound like maybe he was kind of adorkable actually? he probably did not deserve all the grief we gave him

Paleontology Paul: a fellow counselor who may have been ordained? he made holy water for us once. he dresses like he's going on a dig. i think we joked about trying to set him up with Baltimore; i say "i think" because i have a bullet point in my notes that just says "paultimore" as if that means anything

The Katies: there's five people named Katy at NPC. one is a lifeguard, one does sports, one works the stables, and the other two are both counselors. Katy Quinn, aka Horse Katy, has a daughter named Susie

Derek "Turg" Turgle: Indie's counselor in training. about 16. wears brotanks and has his hair cut like Sokka's from A:tLA. he does yoga. at one point he sees a mysterious fancy cologne in the cabin and assumes it's Indie's, so he sprays himself with it and then immediately disappears into a spooky shadow realm/pocket dimension controlled by a youth-stealing witch. he's okay though; we rescued him

Torvold: a hot Swedish guy built like Thor. i think he was another camp counselor? he loves America and also gets possessed in the KFC/Pizza Hut by the fried-chicken-seeking ghost

there isn't one. it's more of an episodic campaign, which is pretty normal for this system

MiM defense squad (me)

I see a lot of fans bashing the Man in the Moon, and not a lot defending him, so here’s my theory on why MiM left Jack for so long.  

I don’t think MiM actively chose to leave Jack alone for so long.  I think it was out of his control for the most part.  

Throughout the movie MiM is very limited in his communications.  The first time that the audience is made aware of MiM actually communicating something is in this scene:

There does seem to be a great deal of limitation to this form of communication.  For starters, it appears that the Moon needs to be visible through this hatch in order for the moonbeam to shine into the room.  After some very brief research, I believe this would be an issue as not only does the moon change position in the sky, but to my understanding it cycles with two-weeks-visible, two-weeks-not-visible in the North Pole.  An added bonus seems to be that at one point during the year the moon is so close to the sun that you can’t see it.  My point is, if MiM needs to be able to look through this window/hatch, then he can only do so every two weeks at best.

MiM is also limited in that he doesn’t seem able to audibly alert the Guardians to his presence.  He also doesn’t communicate using words, but by using images like shadow puppets.

This seems to limit what he can say drastically, as in this scene, he only says two things.  He confirms that Pitch is back, and that Jack is the next Guardian.  Which brings me to my next point,

MiM is able to manipulate the light from this crystal into an image of his choosing.  According to North, this only happens when he chooses the next Guardian.  Given that showing a solid image with a huge amount of detail is a lot more helpful in communicating, I assume that this has a limit on it too.  It may be that MiM can only manipulate the light in this specific crystal, so it would make sense to protect it for important uses only (read: choosing the next Guardian).  It’s possible that the crystal is magic, and that manipulating the light to create an image drains some of its power, or that it was created solely to depict the next Guardian and is therefore useless in other situations.  It’s also possible that this act is difficult or draining to MiM, hence why it’s used so rarely and kept for one specific use.

MiM is also able to speak or deliver information directly to an individual without audible noise.  I believe it happens in this moment or very close to it:

But the only reason we know he is capable of this is because of Jack’s narration.  According to Jack, MiM only said enough to tell Jack his name, something along the lines of “You are Jack Frost” or “Your name is Jack Frost”.  This is never seen again in the movie.

MiM is also capable of physically moving, triggering, breaking and carrying things on Earth.  There are two examples of this in the movie:

The first example is speculation only.  It’s possible that MiM would only have to shine a moonbeam on a specific spot or condense the light to a specific brightness to trigger the crystal to rise.  Given that this is North’s Workshop it’s quite likely that he built in an identification system, or a magic responsive system for MiM to use.  So it’s possible that MiM is not using too much of his power to carry out this action.

With Jack’s resurrection it’s much clearer that this is MiM’s doing.  He is able to lift Jack from the water, break the ice (whether from the force of lifting Jack or by his own doing) and lift him over six feet into the air before lowering him gently back to Earth.  The visuals of this moment also heavily imply that MiM was the one largely responsible for Jack’s resurrection, not just simply removing him from the pond.  To my knowledge this is the single most powerful thing that MiM has done.

So, now that we’ve covered what MiM is capable of, let’s move onto my theory of why MiM is so silent: He used a tremendous amount of power in resurrecting Jack and no longer has enough power to communicate with Earth as easily as he used to.

In the novels MiM communicates often with the Guardians, through magic reminiscent of a video call.  In the movie he is able to communicate at least two words to Jack telepathically.  However, if he were to have drained his powers to rescue Jack (and bearing in mind, none of the other Guardians had to be resurrected, they were all alive and well when they became immortal) then it would make sense as to why he couldn’t communicate to Jack his purpose.  

If MiM was able to regain some of his powers over time, perhaps that explains why he went so quiet after Jack’s resurrection.  At that time, it’s possible he didn’t even have the power to send down shadow puppets, possibly that’s why North installed the crystal in the North Pole, to try to regain communications with MiM.  

If MiM really did lose his ability to communicate with Earth entirely then I can imagine it being very hard for him to get Jack’s attention as Jack wouldn’t be looking for shadow puppets but listening for a response.  In every scene with Jack communicating with MiM or trying to communicate, he is looking up:

It’s very likely that MiM did try to speak to Jack, but was incapable of reaching him in time, or was not able to grab his attention.  

He also has trouble getting the Guardians attention in the Workshop, and by the time he was able to communicate once more, it’s possible that the damage had already been done and bringing Jack into the Guardians may have put him on Pitch’s radar aka in danger.

And that’s why I don’t think MiM purposefully or willfully neglected Jack.

Chaos Twin Nicknames

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer have an unusual gift of the gab that they've used to create this frankly incomprehensible list of nicknames for the rest of the Jellicles. This is what their one shared braincell is focused on most of the time, and no one else has been able to keep them all straight yet.

Alonzo is Lonnie, although they've also been known to yell "'Allo, guv'ner!" whenever they see him across the Junkyard.

Asparagus (as in Gus Jr.) is Perry. They call Gus Sr. "Just Gus" after a talking-to by Jellylorum concerning their old nickname, Rags.

Bombalurina is Allie or Allie-Cat (when she's in a good mood), Demeter is Teri, and Cassandra is Sandy or Andi.

Bustopher Jones is Stuff, Stuffy, or Stuffed.

Coricopat is Ricky (he's still not sure how they got there) and Tantomile is Tomi. As a pair, they're Patty and Millie.

Electra is Ellie, Etcetera is Ettie, and Jemima is Emmie (sometimes Emmie 2, since Demeter is Emmie 1). Close names for close friends!

Grizabella probably left the Tribe before they were old enough to start making nicknames, but they'd call her Izzy or Rizzo.

Jellylorum is Lori or Rummy. They mostly just call Jennyanydots variants on "mum" (including The Old Mumsie Cat), but when they're sure she's out of earshot, she's The Old Gum.

Macavity (post-them working for him) is Itty, Sugar, Sweetheart, or Toothache.

Mistoffelees is Toffee. If he goes by Quaxo, then he's Duck. Victoria is Tori, Icky with the other kittens, or Swan or Goose with Quaxo.

Munkustrap is Trap, Tramp, or Scraps when they're not calling him "dad" to set him off, which is most of the time.

Old Deuteronomy is Ol' Ron.

Plato is Play-Doh, Pouncival is Ounce, and Tumblebrutus is Bumble or just Bum.

The Rum Tum Tugger was a bit of an enigma since barely anyone calls him by his full name anyway, but they eventually settled on Artie.

Skimbleshanks has too many nicknames to count, not even considering all the variations on "dad" they've come up with. Ticky, Sticky, Kim, Ankles, and the list goes on. He's also caught on to many of their nicknames and has started referring to other cats with them absentmindedly, which gets him a lot of strange looks.

And lastly, what do Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer call each other? Why, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, of course! (They call each other J and T in private, but the expression on Munkustrap's face is too good to pass on insisting on their full names being used by the other cats.)

Episode 9 ~ Don’t Stop Me Now

“MAARRRAVALA MARSOL!” I hear from outside as my adorable little girl pushes through the door to come see me. I blame Gab for this as I told him I would be busy fizzing but it’s hard not to smile and adore her and I can’t help but laugh.

“What are you on about today?” Hopefully nothing to do with cats.

She points to herself rather proudly. “Marvala Marsol!”

“Is that your new nickname?” 

She nods.

I get down to her level as the fizzing machine rumbles and bumbles behind. Filling the garage with a misty grape-y scent. “Nicknames are important but yours might need to be shorter.”

She hmmms.

“Mines for example is Izzy.”

She nods again, thoughtful.

“But you know, I like it! Marvelous Marisol!”
