Nightfall is a 1956 American crime film noir directed by Jacques Tourneur and starring Aldo Ray, Brian Keith and Anne Bancroft. Jacques Tourneur was also the director of Out of the Past (a personal favorite) and The Cat People (you haven't lived until you’ve seen Simone Simon in cat-action) as well as a series of low-budget horror films he made for RKO Studios, I Walked with a Zombie and The Leopard Man. He is also known for directing Night of the Demon, which was released by Columbia Pictures. While in Hollywood, he was usually addressed by his anglicized name "Jack Turner", a literal and phonetic translation of his name into English. Because we just need to get things done here in LA and don't worry about junk like other people’s languages. It's where the term 'pipe down rub-a-dub' came from, I'm certain. This low-budget film is remembered today for camera work by cinematographer Burnett Guffey. It uses flashbacks the means to tell the story. It was based on a 1948 novel by David Goodis. Reviews were a tad chilly. Marjory Adams declared Nightfall as "all that a suspense-yearning public could hope for" as well as that "If it comes to analyzing the plot, "Nightfall" has enough holes in it to drive two truck through them". Jacques Tourneur - Night of the Demon (1957) A great horror film, a precursor to Folk Horror, a particularly good adaptation of an M.R. James story and the last great Tourneur film, Night of the Demon is a fun and at times pretty suspenseful film, like a mix between Hitchcock and Hammer Horror. The Hitchcockian qualities of the film are partly due to screenwriter Charles Bennet, who also wrote 39 Steps and Sabotage for Hitchcock. Elements of those films which recur in Hitch's filmography are also here, the mismatched couple investigating a mysterious death, the climax on a train, the fascinating villain are all part of this mix. However, this also has a Godzilla quality giant puppet demon which in spite of being a controversial element in the film, only makes it better in my opinion. Like other Tourneur films (Cat People, I Walked With a Zombie), there is really little ambiguity about the reality of the supernatural. This actually makes his films quite original and pretty frightening, the psychological explanations so common in other horror films always end up being insufficient and plain wrong in these films. There's an actual fog demon from hell, the Crowleyesque villain can summon storms and his runic spells do work, eventually our skeptic hero can only prevail by giving in, accepting the magical and playing by its rules. This actually makes the stakes real, these aren't illusions or delusions, these can really kill the hero or those around him and much of the film's suspense comes from the fact that you soon realize that the demon will come for his pound of flesh and no amount of skepticism can stop him.
