this event is dedicated to everyone's favourite acting grand master, jean gunnhildr! it consists of 10 prompts over the month of march. (inspired by our predecessors aprilluc and kaevember, jarch is a portmanteau of jean + march. very creative, i know)

also no! any fanwork of our acting grand master is welcome, whether inspired by the prompts or not

Also, fair's fair and I love hearing people's different headcanons: do you think there's an extended Gunnhildr Clan or just our known two?

I think there could be a few other Gunnhildr family members, like a grandmother, an uncle or something like that, but I don’t think there is an extended Gunnhildr Clan properly speaking.

The way the Gunnhildr Clan is mentioned, I think it never sounds like it’s a big clan with a lot of members anymore, contrary to the Lawrence Clan for example. I mean I think if a new Lawrence Clan member was introduced, it would be fine even if they weren’t specifically talked about previously, whereas if a new Gunnhildr was suddenly introduced, I feel like it would be more “wtf where were you this entire time??” I think the Gunnhildr Clan nowadays is constituted by a few members who are prominent figures in Mondstadt generation after generation, thus still making it a major clan, by their involvement rather than the size of the clan.

But I was thinking… In Gunnhildr’s biography, the Gunnhildr Clan is described as a nomadic clan, with Gunnhildr’s father leading his people out of Mondstadt and all. By that I think it wasn’t just a family, but more something like a tribe, related to Mondstadt but with its own independence. It could be possible to imagine that there are descendants of people who were part of the Gunnhildr Clan back then. People who don’t share the name, but were affiliated with the Gunnhildr Clan a long time ago.

But I don’t think it would matter that much either, it would be more like a fun fact X) The Gunnhildr Clan seemed to be a separate entity from Mondstadt back during Decarabian’s reign, and Gunnhildr’s father’s loyalty was to his clan first and foremost since he led them out of the city to escape tyranny, but later on, the Gunnhildr Clan got assimilated into Mondstadt and isn’t this distinct nomadic tribe anymore. So there could be people who are direct heirs to the original tribe, but it wouldn’t really matter anymore since what is important for the Gunnhildrs nowadays is Mondstadt as a whole.

My turn to ask a Jarch question: what do you think Jean's relationship with her dad was/is? Both how they interact, and how they view each other?

Ok so first of all, while writing, I realized that there’s an information that I thought was canon, that may in fact not be because I can’t for the life of me figure out where it would come from… If someone knows, please tell me! Or, alternatively, if someone put this somewhere in their fic, please tell me too because it might be my source! XD

So, I thought that Jean had chosen to work on her healer abilities on the advice of her father. Which contributes a lot to how I see their relationship. Frederica is Jean’s main teacher, obviously, but the healing part doesn’t come from her, though. It comes from Seamus’ advice, and also it’s important to note that this is more about “advice” than ”teaching” or “heritage”: Frederica tells Jean what she must do as a Gunnhildr; Seamus tells her what he thinks might fit her when she’s in doubt about what she wants to become and what she wants to learn. He’s less hands-on than Frederica about his daughters’ education, and more into guiding and providing advice when they come to him.

It also shows that Jean thinks highly of him and trusts him both to talk to him and tell him about her doubts, and follow his advice. I also really like the idea that she incorporated a bit of him in her way of doing things. She was raised mostly as a Gunnhildr and does things the Gunnhildr way, but she also trained to be a healer because her dad gave her the idea.

Overall, I think of him as a pretty chill and easy-going dad. Frederica was the one worrying about shaping Gunnhildrs and he left that to her, so he focused more on taking care of the other aspects of child rearing. Like providing fun, affection, giving a listening ear, etc. I think he always got on well with both his daughters and still does.

But then I also think of him as becoming distant, especially with Jean since she stayed with her mother after the divorce which meant he stopped taking care of her the way he used to. But he’s distant, but more accidentally so, rather than him being cold or uninterested or anything like that.

I think he’s a workaholic, like everyone in this family. x) He’s very invested in his role in the cathedral, he’s very busy all the time, and now he’s even away on Varka’s expedition. And since Jean is also a workaholic, it doesn’t leave much time to see each other…

Also, as I was saying, I think of him as a pretty easy-going dad, and when his daughters were young, it made him a fun and chill dad, but now that they’re older, well… He doesn’t want to overstep or tell them what to do or be nosy since they’re old enough to take care of themselves and he trusts them to do it right. So he lets them be and keeps back. Again, especially with Jean since he doesn’t live with her and wasn’t her guardian anymore when she was still a child. He’d be very happy to provide for anything his daughters would ask of him, he’s waiting patiently for them to come to him, but they’re not kids anymore, they have their own life so he lets them be. I think Frederica tends to show her love more through concern, gifts, keeping tabs, while Seamus shows it through trust, leeway and being there when asked to. The only problem is… Do you think Jean actually goes to him when she’d like to see him? No, of course not, she doesn’t want to be a bother! XD And that’s where lies the problem: Seamus keeps back because he doesn’t want to be a bother, but Jean doesn’t go to him because she doesn’t want to be a bother. So yeah… his chill dad attitude now makes him an aloof dad .—.

If you want to move the sadness cursor up, for fic purposes, I have described Jean and her father’s relationship as “professional”. I think they still see each other because they work with each other from time to time, but it’s not the time or place to act as father and daughter, so they act according to their position instead. But then they don’t get to spend time together outside of work and also it kind of feels like they have already seen each other recently so taking the time to see each other again outside of work feels like indulging (especially from Jean’s point of view) so they don’t. Which means that they only interact as colleagues nowadays… Their relationship is suffering from it… They’re not used to be parent and child anymore…

I think Jean is very much a family person and resents that she doesn’t spend time with her dad anymore, the same way she resents not being closer to Barbara. The divorce hit her hard :(
