Okay, so I've had this wip waiting around an alley cat in Weych has unexpected visitors, and Ferrin has an awful day. And I've gone back to looking at it and

���Well,” Ferrin  said, flipping the dagger he’d used to deflect the attack over in one hand before slipping it into the sheath, “that was a good attempt.” He smiled. “Next time, don’t expect me to be predictable. Going for an obvious weakness might just get you killed.” “Ok,” Jason said, putting his sword away, “but what if my opponent actually is that bad?” Ferrin snorted. “I wouldn’t count on it.” “No, really. What if I’m up against the worst swordsman in Lyrian? I still shouldn’t go for the easy strike? I thought you said ending a fight fast is the most important part of a fight.” “Until recently, Jason,” Ferrin said, leading the way back toward the temple, “you were the worst swordsman in Lyrian.” “Hey!” He squawked then waved at one of the friendly monkeys that had been spectating the sparring match.  “I’m sorry if the truth bruises your fledgling ego.”

Fic Summary: Ferrin is pale and, Jason realizes, trembling almost imperceptibly, pupils blown wide. He’s bitten clean into his lower lip at some point, and blood trickles from the corner of his mouth.

“It’s gone,” Ferrin says, sounding far more lucid than he looks, but somehow very, very far away. “They’re gone.”

Jason blinks. “What now?”

“What,” rasps the displacer, “did you do?”

And then, of course, he promptly passes out.

Chapter 4/5: chosen path

He can still hear the deep, mournful melody of the sousalax from somewhere nearby. Above, the sky is spangled with stars. Jason doesn’t recognize a single one.

He grins.

“‘Toto,’” Jason proclaims to those beautiful unfamiliar stars, “‘I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.’”

“I thought you said you lived in Colorado,” Ferrin says from somewhere very near outside the tree.

a normal young person can't be at fault for a carbon monoxide poisoning, a targetted soldier can't be at fault for an IED blast, an innocent miner trying to do his job can't be at fault for a mine collapse, a person just trying to sail somewhere can't be at fault for the boat turning over, a normal passenger can't be at fault for a plane crash, but the driver IS at fault in a car crash!

middle of the night making life choices (writing fanfic for a series I haven't thought about in years)

Summary:

Jason Walker, one-time mysterious missing kid and now Vista’s resident weird loner kid, doesn’t really hold out hope anymore for a miraculous return to Lyrian. Not until a familiar face appears in his life, years after he stopped believing. Or: time runs oddly between Lyrian and Earth, and Jason’s Ferrin-sponsored vacation back to Colorado lasts longer for him than it does on the other side.

I’m not saying I don’t appreciate the storytelling aspect of it but I just really cannot stand how much this woman suffers throughout the entirety of the show. Believe me, I get that this is the point. I also get that I am meant to feel this way about it. But there’s a distinct dissonance between me understanding it and watching it that I just cannot abide. And it will forever make watching BUFFY for Buffy the hardest of all.

On the one hand, you have to applaud that Whedon and Co went there. Created something so emotionally compelling that you can feel this disconcerted towards it. On the other,… ‘Ouch’…. am I right? 🫤

I don’t know how to put it to be honest. I think it’s spectacular writing that it’s able to hit me this way. But it’s the hitting me this way that makes me want to avoid it. It’s very difficult to watch her struggle and suffer and sacrifice constantly throughout her arc. But it’s the fact she does this constantly and still triumphs and overcomes which makes her such a legend. I wish I could articulate my thoughts better on her character because I think she’s written and portrayed so well that I actively want to avoid watching her scenes because my heart just gives out and goes to her.
