I am SO fucking sick of "shock" endings.

So. I've been only moderately interested in the crime drama Professor T. I only watched it because Ben Miller plays the titular character, and I loved him in Death in Paradise. So far I haven't really enjoyed the series, because it's yet another attempt to amp up the quirkiness factor of the main character in a detective series in a not very likeable way. He's Monk, really, but with plastic gloves.

Anyway I tuned in to the Season finale just because I was cynically curious how they would end the season. I was already pissed about what they'd done with his ex-lover, DCI Christina Brand, who allowed the already fucked up professor to go to jail rather than reveal the truth which would have cost her her job. After he'd been there for a while and was on trial for attempted murder she finally confessed and quit. Asshole.

I was stupid enough to allow the finale to raise my hopes. Jasper learns the truth about his father's death, reconciles with his mother enough to peel off his ever-present gloves, and to cry and feel happy. Meanwhile, DS Dan Winters proposes to DS Lisa Donckers and she accepts. Huzzah! Happy endings all round!

But this is British TV. They don't do happy endings. (Looks like this story arc was part of the original Belgian series. If so, fuck you Belgium.)

In a nutshell, this happens to DS Lisa Donckers.

So she's run over and dies slowly, and Jasper arrives just in time to witness his protege's dying gasps, and is so traumatized he puts his gloves back on, signalling that he is again separating himself from the world. And of course she hears her fiance's voice calling for her on the phone as she dies from being crushed by a car. And of course DS Winters arrives too late and there's the woman he'd asked to be his wife dead in the road.

Are we having fun yet?

The writers wanted the audience all happy for Jasper and looking forward to his full recovery from a terrible childhood, but oopsy do, they were just jerking us around. Fuck you and your Happy Ending, we can't have Healed Jasper because the series can only exist with an emotionally crippled, psychologically screwed up main character. We'll add new characters next season, but don't get too attached, because we may kill them off as well just to keep you on your toes.

Maybe some people like to play "Who Dies This Season?" I don't. I don't like books, movies, or TV series that mistake emotional manipulation for good storytelling.

I miss Richard Poole . . . Oh. Wait. They killed him off, too. They didn't have to kill him. They could have just had him return to London, to his roast beef, perfect tea, and the snug in his local. But nooooo. It's funner if the character the audience luvs diiiieeeess.

Jasper Teerlink (Belgium - Professor T)

Professor of Criminology helps the police. This show is ART (it won an award for cinematography) and the way they show his train of thought is delightful. He has OCD (cannon) and his friend and colleges love and care for him when he needs help with his OCD. Also he's just a really funny guy. Uncompromisingly himself <3

Ghost3

Ghost3 is the tenth band! They are scary/haunted themed.

Rueli: Rueli is a bloodsucking vampire. Many fans believe she's simply putting on an act (much like all of the other non-human characters). However this is false.

Jasper: Jasper is a real ghost. It's unknown when or how she died. Jasper takes joy in scaring unsuspecting victims. She uses her ghostly powers to pull pranks on others.

Hesperia: Hesperia is the only human in Ghost3. Though she's quiet and acts like a shadow. It's common for her to scare others more than her supernatural girlfriends.

Background: Moving into a new place, Hesperia bought a house that was rumored to be haunted. These rumors were correct when she found that the house was occupied by Rueli the vampire and Jasper the ghost. Rueli and Jasper didn't succeed in scaring her or forcing her out of the house, so they let her stay. The three eventually all fell in love and they became a couple.

its funny how some people refer to my oc’s with their first names because i’m not brazen enough to think i’m on a first name basis on them (and i made them)

but its funnier when i keep referring to a character exclusively by their surname despite the fact that marriage has changed said surname

An IdeaTM came to me

it’s a bad one but I have to put it somewhere

so I’m into symbolism, right. It’s super intense. It’s everywhere and I can’t stop. So I’m making more. I need flowers, flavors, rocks. I need actions, scents, shapes. Yes this is for my primary five plus Ranger and the Courier sometimes.

but it was the shapes that caught my eye this time.

I was thinking about how some of the other characters actually represent, in a way, alternate versions of… of other characters… how some characters actually symbolize Each Other. This brought me to the basic shape idea, what each character would be represented by at the simplest level.

Orwren would have the Pentagon. At first, I wanted him to have the spade, representing a sharp and soft side, but I didn’t want curves here. The pentagon was the perfect shape. He is the home and represents what’s good and what there is to love.

Lyan would have the Diamond (rhombus). To me, this is self explanatory, but the explicit reasoning is hard to explain in word form. Lyan has spent her life on the edge of a double edged sword, following signs and clues that seemingly lead nowhere, and trying to do the right thing. The diamond is both a compass arrow and a blade.

Kad would have the Triangle. Sharp and to the point, notoriously representing fire, alert, and danger. Kad is foreign territory in his own land, representing right and wrong and the thin line between.

Cyra and Jasper are more difficult, given that their characters are not as well defined and fairly impulsive. Thus, they’re the two characters with curvature in their shapes.

Cyra would have the Circle. Mysterious and mathematically annoying, the circle is a perfect shade for Cyra’s notoriously troubled personality. She seems perfect. She’s far from it.

Jasper would have a four-leaf clover shape. I wanted to give him a leaf, but there are too many kinds of leaves. Four leaf clovers always look the same. Represents luck and good fortune. Hopefully, that’s what he gets.

american gothic: what's one relationship between characters in this work that you think people wouldn't expect?

i don't think Jasper initially comes off as someone who's married ... i didn't write him that way in the first place. and then i got a few paragraphs into having written him and went "he needs a husband". so now he has one!

there's another one but it is SPOILERS!

the swing: are there any moments in this fic where the characters get to slow down and have fun? if not, why is that?

always. there's a few days where they're snowed in, so Isi does some embroidery. while helping a particular town rebuild some stuff, Robin isn't really able to help, so he plays catch with kids.

felting: how often do you include soft moments when you write? do these moments play a role in the main plot, or do you include them as an escape from the rest of the story?

frequently. i don't think this distinction is actually as binary as it looks. soft moments are important for character arcs, almost always. Theo and Tempest have some soft moments together while they bond; Aella and Theo obviously do as they fall in love; Aella and Tempest have soft moments that establish that Tempest might be cranky about her ship being stolen but she doesn't love Aella any less, no matter what Aella has misunderstood. Isi and Sierra have soft moments while they get to know each other again after years apart. they're maybe not part of the main main plot, but they're still really important to shape the characters and set scenes.
