The Tubeway Army, ‘Replicas’ 1979.

Replicas is the second & final album the band produced under the name Tubeway Army. After a low-key debut album the previous year this album was a resounding success both critically & commercially. Fronted by Gary Numan who was the creative genius within the band. From the concept story of the album to Lyrics & even playing all instruments but the Bass & Drums, this was Numan’s album.

The ideas for the album were based on a book that Gary Numan was developing.... I’m not sure if he even finished it! Numan’s book much like the album was Inspired by Philip K Dicks book ‘Do Androids dream of electric sheep’. Set in the not too distant future much like the film ‘Blade Runner’ 1982 which was also inspired by Dicks book. Replicas is set in a dystopian metropolis where the Machmen (Androids) run the world by subduing the human population & herding them as cattle on the orders of the Grey men.

Musically the album is innovative, this is the album that started my interest in 70’s & 80’s synthesizer music especially Jean Michelle Jarre’s Oxygene 1976 & Kraftwerk’s Autobahn 1974 amongst others. There is a use of heavy Guitars on certain tracks like the opening song ‘I, disconnect from you’ & ‘You are in my Vision’. Then you have deep rich synthesisers in ‘Are friends Electric?’ & especially in ‘Down in the Park’. ‘Replicas’ is one the that best incorporates the guitar & Numan’s Mini-Moog synthesiser. Gary Numan’s almost Darlek like voice fits perfectly & this style is something that he continues with in places in future projects, he also has a whine that happily accompanies his music.

After Replicas Numan sheds the name Tubeway Army & he & the band continue under his name, still on the faithful ‘Beggars Banquet’ label. Gary Numan is just as influenced as he has been influential, many of his songs or just music have been redone or sampled, Nine Inch Nails & Basement Jaxx are just a two that he has influenced. The man himself was influenced by David Bowie both his style & music would have an impact on him it seems, Kraftwerk & Ultravox were others.

The album cover captures the themes of the album very well. Numan a ‘Machman’ mirrored in a window overlooking a park in moonlight, watching for Humans, it’s haunting & captures the atmosphere of the album. This album is up there with the very best ‘New Wave’ had to offer, after a few more top albums Numan would struggle in the late 80’s & 90’s but with ‘Splinter’ 2013 he found his creative formula again. Maybe he didn’t need to finish his book, ‘Replicas’ does a great job telling Numan’s story.

The Meg (2018)

The Meg, in which Jason Statham squares off against a giant shark, has the good grace of being self-aware. Eager to make you laugh, delivering on the shark action you desire and featuring great 3D, it’s only in the more dramatic moments that it doesn’t work.

While exploring the ocean floor, the crew of the underwater research facility “Mana One” discovers a hidden ecosystem. Resurfacing after being attacked by a Megalodon, a thought-to-be-extinct species of giant shark, they're horrified to discover the beast has followed them.

With a tagline like “Opening Wide”, the film’s comedic moments shouldn’t be a surprise. Director Jon Turteltaub understands the audience is there to see the shark take colossal bites out of ships and swallow people whole. The film delivers plenty of "chomps", particularly during the climax. You feel guilty about laughing at the beach-goers scrambling in the water but not too much, not when shark cages are being swallowed whole, shrieking brides’ pets uselessly attempt to swim away from a fin which sticks out of the water like a sailboat, and big inflatables pop when punctured by those mega teeth. It’s a little macabre, but satisfying too.

The crew of Mana One, which includes Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), Suyin Zhang (Li Bingbing), millionaire Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson), “Mac” (Cliff Curtis), Dr. Minway Zhang (Winston Chao) and computer expert Jaxx Herd (Ruby Rose) joke amongst each other, which add laughs and help endear you to them. Some are still, at the end of the day, destined to be little more than shark food but you’re (mostly) sorry to see them go. The one who fares worst is Page Kennedy, who does little but crack jokes and doesn’t serve much of a purpose in a film that features many stereotypical characters.

Faring better are Jason Statham and Li Bingbing, the latter of which is there to appeal to the Chinese market but nonetheless has some good scenes. I’ve never really thought of Statham as an organism capable of love but in the moments where they hint at a romance between the two, you smile and hope they make it. Sweet little Shuya Sophia Cai as Meiying, Suyin’s daughter, can be accompanied by some moments of forced emotion – which is where the picture is at it’s worst – but she can be cute and funny too. These three, along with the Megalodon raise the picture above some of the bad lines found in the script and odd decisions. A scene is dedicated to condemning shark fin soup so is it trying to be oceanically correct?

The Meg is no game-changer but its shark-related moments of tension will amuse you. Combined with the laughs and the top-notch 3D effects (particular in the underwater sequences), it's worth catching if only for that final joke - which is cheesy but worked for me. Before she was Batwoman, she was a sexy she-wolf named Byanka.

Australia’s own Ruby Rose has just been announced to star as Batwoman in DC’s TV universe. If you’re not familiar with her work, should you be excited?

Ruby Rose has been carving out a curious niche in the acting world for a few years now, with her role in Orange is the New Black’s third season launching her to overseas success. She will play Kate Kane in a big DC TV crossover later this year, and potentially go on to star as the Jewish lesbian crime fighter in her own Batwoman show.

Given that Ruby Rose has been steadily gaining bigger and bigger roles in blockbusters – including giant-shark film The Meg, which is just around the corner — playing Batwoman could really cement her stardom. Although if you go by The Meg’s IMDb page, she already is a star: according to IMDb’s STARMeter, Rose gets top billing over Jason Statham.

As a star, Rose is defined by a weird, inexplicable aura that permeates all her roles. She’s defined by Ruby Rose Energy.

Now, you’re probably familiar with the concept of Big Dick Energy, but you may not have heard of Ruby Rose Energy. Ruby Rose Energy is Big Dick Energy’s non-binary cousin. Ruby Rose Energy is effortlessly cool, but also quietly daggy.

It’s becoming a movie and TV star while always being slightly unable to escape your past as an MTV Australia VJ, or someone who got into a brief Twitter feud with Josh Thomas over unpaid Veuve at a Melbourne club. It’s having real life charisma disproportionate to what necessarily translates on screen — just like the good old days!

Ruby Rose Energy is being the first person to quit The 7pm Project. It’s not being recognisable to virtually anyone over 40, and dating a Veronica in the year 2018. As one commenter said on yesterday’s casting news, “she’s like, everything”.

Make no mistake – this is a loving tribute to Ruby Rose and the utterly specific, weird space she has carved out in Australian pop culture since the early 2000s. There’s a lot you can learn about Ruby Rose Energy from the names of characters she plays, so here’s a ranking of all the character names she is credited with playing on IMDb – ranked by least-to-most Ruby Rose Energy.

Presumably as a result of some mix-up on the first day on set that no one was brave enough to correct, the name of Ruby Rose’s character in this cliché-ridden Australian spin on Dangerous Minds is Hannah, while Christina Ricci’s is, no joke, Dino Chalmers.

It is with great regret that I must place Hannah at the bottom of this list, and that I cannot officially say that Dino motherfuckin’ Chalmers is a perfect exemplar of Ruby Rose Energy.

Though her performance was terrific as a woman who more or less does nothing until she gets hilariously sucked into a giant fan, the character’s name — Abigail — has very low Ruby Rose Energy and, as such, sits near the bottom of the list.

Abigail is the name of a pretty girl you pretend to like in primary school so people don’t think you’re gay, not the name of a character played by devastatingly handsome genderfluid star Ruby Rose.

Though I will never watch this weird Crocodile Dundee tourism ad, I do appreciate the rich complexity of giving a Ruby Rose character a title and a position of authority. That said, in its most Ruby Rose form, ‘Chief’ would be the character’s given name, and as such it falls on the lower end of the scale.

Ruby Rose plays a mute assassin in the John Wick franchise, and her character is named for the Greek god of war – which means we’re getting to the good shit.

But beyond the strong concept, it feels a bit pianissimo in execution; may I suggest it lengthens in John Wick: Chapter 3 to ‘Ares McIliad’ or perhaps ‘Ares Bazooka’?

Ruby Rose Energy is about throwing subtlety to the wind.

I know what you’re thinking: what name could possibly be more Ruby Rose than ‘Ruby Rose’?

Well, since her full birth name is Ruby Rose Langenheim, ‘Ruby Rose’ is technically only 44% of that, meaning it’s slightly below average Ruby Rose Energy.

My interest in Pitch Perfect 3: Aca-merican Imperialism is precisely zero, but Calamity is exactly the kind of Ruby Rose character name I come to IMDb to see.

Less impressive is the movie thinking that Ruby Rose-as-Calamity would be the front-woman of a generic guitar band called Evermoist instead of the lead singer of a desperately edgy Christian lady-rock group called SHEviticus, or GALatians, or The GeneSisters, and so on.

Calamity has the toughness of Ruby Rose Energy, but lacks that certain je ne sais quoi.

Where were you when all of America discovered Stella Carlin, and thus Ruby Rose, at once?

Was it the same place you were when Ruby tweeted about Katy Perry’s Witness, calling it “purposeful poop” and “bomb a petit”? Or when she threw a “singular fry” at a restaurant owner?

No name on this list better exemplifies the Ruby Rose Energy tendency to get into beefs with low-grade celebs that no one but tabloids would ever care about. Stella Carlin is what happens when Ruby Rose Energy gets captured in essence but lost in translation.

It’s trying just a little bit too hard.

The beauty of the current Golden Age of Ruby Rose Character Names is how often the names just sound like full sentences in and of themselves.

Adele Wolff.

I already feel like I’ve known this character my whole life. Like I’ve already followed her journey from digital marketing graduate to Instafamous, gluten intolerant Byron Bay-based wellness blogger, which I am convinced is where Ruby Rose would be at without her tattoos.

What’s even more incredible is that this Ruby Rose character looks more like the human reboot of Charlize Theron’s haircut in Aeon Flux than any of the others (and they all do, a little) and honestly, I’m here for it.

Wikipedia says Bianca, but IMDb says Byanka, which is so Ruby Rose I can’t stand it.

And truly, is the root of the human condition not the internal war we wage over whether we are a Bianca or a Byanka?

Anyway, this movie looks bananas, Ruby Rose’s character is an overly sexualised she-wolf, and the script was co-written by someone who goes by the name ‘1kg Sugar’.

If the idea of Ruby Rose playing a character named Wendy the Android (lol) on a Canadian sci-fi show makes you think, “Huh, I wonder if they made her a horny killer fuckbot?”

The answer, unequivocally, is yes.

That they named her Wendy like she’s one of the nice mums working at a primary school tuckshop is just *Italian chef kiss* molto bene. It’s the perfect combination of ‘maybe this is the next step in human evolution’ and ‘Lorna Jane loyalty card owner’.

My Sexuality: How Ruby Rose inspired us to be proud of our sexuality!

Ruby Rose has worked hard since she began chasing her dreams. Those dreams eventually became achieved goals for the Australian model, actress and DJ! The talented Rose is best known for her role in “Orange is The New Black,” but many have missed out on some other facts about her life.

Last year (2017) she opened up to her family, friends and fans about her “uncertain future,” in the USA. The TODAY episode featured Ruby Rose and her story about coming out to her mom at 12-years-old. This coming out story is beyond inspiring and it’s one many need to hear…because Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning young adults are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than their non-LGBTQ friends. But with more people speaking up and inspiring, that statistic can be changed for the better.

At first, Ruby was worried about telling her mother but quickly found that her mom would accept and love her regardless of how she felt about her gender.

“When I told her, she was like, ‘I know,’” Rose explained. “She knew when I was six apparently. I was like, ‘Really mom,’ I don’t even think I knew then. I didn’t think it was possible. Apparently it is and it makes sense.” she continued to talk about fear. “I was just worried because I didn’t know it was a thing. I knew how I felt and what I kind of identified as, but the words gay or lesbian… I didn’t know anyone else that was or lesbian. So I didn’t know how to word it. So I was just like, ‘I think I should let you know that when I eventually get a boyfriend, there’ll be a girl.’ And she was just like, ‘I know.’”

How truly Inspiring it is to see that her mother loved and accepted her just as she was and even payed attention to the signs while she was a young child. It’s important to be there for your children and support them regardless of what they might be feeling in their heart. We all need someone to support us during our growth. Judgements, hatred and “pray the gay away,” are all negative terms we’ve seen happen over the years.

What’s the point of agency in the first place if you are going to outcast your child?

Ruby’s message to other LGBTQ individuals is simple.

“Be true to yourself. Believe in yourself. Whatever you think and feel… that’s you. There is only one of you in the world. We are all completely unique. Don’t be hard on yourself. Don’t have any kind of shame. There is a reason that you are that way.”

She couldn’t be closer to the truth. As a child, growing up I can remember hating Barbies, I loved the NSYNC doll collection, loved playing with cars, wrestling and boxing. Simply put, I was and am a “tomboy,” if you really want to put a label on it and I don’t care what anyone feels about the fact I also find women like Ruby Rose, Kesha Sebert, Selena Gomez and even friends of mine attractive, no shame. Don’t you think that’s how it should be? You cannot force a person to change and you cannot “pray the gay away.” I live in a State that attempts to “pray the gay away,” all the time. Families will kick their children out, send them to BYU (where some even endured electro shock therapy in attempts to be fixed by the church). In my humble opinion I don’t feel that’s the right way to handle these situations. I’ve grown up around families that absolutely refuse to accept their children and force them to be something they are not just so they can “stay true to their beliefs,” Rather than support their own child. But here’s the thing, this is my message to those particular families, it’s not “Christlike,” and that’s why I chose to write about Ruby Rose how she is far more inspirational than those I’m surrounded with on a daily basis.

There are many who are going to read this article that are still active in that particular religious community and roll their eyes and maybe they will “unfriend,” me for life. Truth is, I don’t care. If you can’t accept people for who they are then you’re technically not even following your own religious teachings. You’re being an inconsiderate human being, in general. It’s not like those of us who are “different,” in your eyes sit and judge you for your worship. So…. why judge those of us who fall into a “description you despise?”

Beyond that, Ruby Rose has not only inspired us to be proud of who we are but to chase our dreams as we are because we don’t have to change in order to achieve our goals. And if there are people out there who don’t like us or won’t give us a “job,” based on how we dress and who we date then you have better doors waiting for you, just be patient. The future is always unknown and it can be even more frightening when you are about to share a part of you that MOST people don’t accept or understand.

Ruby Rose might be best known for her roles in Film and Television but she’s truly an inspiration because of WHO SHE IS AS A PERSON. It’s not what she does on-screen that makes “Ruby Rose everything she is in life.” It’s how hard she has strived to get where she is in life, it’s how she’s opened up without shame about being genderfluid. And it’s about the love she spreads in the world. Rose has supported many charities, rescuing animals, helping out victims of Hurricane Harvey. She travels to Laos and Africa every year to volunteer. She also involves herself in anti-bullying campaigns, works as an ambassador for “Headspace,” helping youth with their mental health and has a strong love for fur babies, supporting PETA with the campaign “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur.” Rose is also a vegan!

What an amazing individual and inspiration she has become over the years. We are super proud of all her hard work and the lives she has been able to help inspire. And when you inspire, you save people. That’s why words are so powerful. It’s important to use your words wisely and to help one another regardless of your beliefs. Rose has been a victim of bullying before and even now, the world isn’t all accepting but guess what? She doesn’t give a crap, that’s what’s up Ruby.

If you’re a lover of Ruby Rose and all she does, stay tuned she’s currently filming “John Wick 3: Parabellum,” as Ares. And she just completed the film “The Meg,” as Jaxx Herd. The Meg is expected to hit theaters on August 10, 2018. And John Wick 3: Parabellum won’t be out until May 2019!

Jaxx Herd x Reader

Jaxx comes home and helps the reader study for their Marine Bio exam

Jaxx had just gotten home from their lab. They were exhausted and hungry and wanted to hug their partner and eat dinner. They walked in, put their bag down, took off their shoes, and went to find their partner. “Baby? Where are you?” they called out. When they didn’t get a response, they went to look for them. As they walked around their apartment, they grew more and more worried. Jaxx, post-Meg, had a lot of anxiety about their partner’s safety. Logically, Jaxx knew that a giant shark couldn’t do anything to their partner in New York, thousands of miles away from the Chinese waters, yet they were still scared from time to time. As they walked into their bedroom, they released a sigh, and their shoulders relaxed. Sitting in front of their desk in their bedroom was Jaxx’s partner, Alex, slumped in front of open Marine Life, Oceanology, and Biology books. Jaxx walked over to their sleeping partner to find their desk littered with coffee cups, Monster cans, and various pages of assignments and notes. “Alex, darling? Can you wake up for me?” Jaxx quietly asked while gently shaking Alex’s shoulder.

“Hmm? Oh, hi J,” Alex sleepily said as they sat up and rubbed their eyes. “Sorry, I was trying to finish my homework but, I suppose I fell asleep. Did I scare you?” They asked, knowing that Jaxx was anxious whenever they didn’t meet their partner at the door.

“Just a touch darling but I’m okay. You haven’t eaten have you?” Jaxx asked smiling and raising their eyebrows. They already knew that the answer was no.

“Um… Does the cream in my coffee count?” Alex said chuckling.

“Baby, you know it doesn’t” Jaxx replied, also chuckling. “Alright well, let's go get something to eat. How do tacos sound?”

“Fish?”

“Sure. I’ll order them,” Jaxx said. “How about you take a break and go take a shower and then I’ll help with your studying during dinner?”

“Alright,” Alex replied, walking into the bathroom. Jaxx walked out of their shared bedroom and into the kitchen to order their food. About 30 minutes later, a knock was at their door. Jaxx got up from their couch, got the food, and sat down at the dining room table. 5 minutes later, Alex left their bedroom with their books and notes and sat beside Jaxx.

Over the next few hours, all of the tacos were gone, the books studied, the notes gone over, and Alex finally felt as though they could take their exam and not fail it. As they finished reading the last passage in the book they were going over, Jaxx brought them some glasses of wine. They finished their night in a quiet atmosphere, just focusing on each other and their drinks.
