Jcink Coding Communities & Resources
Coding shouldn’t feel like some exclusive, unattainable club. We all started somewhere—most of us just messing with elements to try customizing them before we got ✨ambitious✨ and started building our own projects.
Most of us are hobby coders, and we can’t always hold everyone’s hand as they’re getting into the community. Plus, a lot of our knowledge is hobbled together according to need (maybe that’s just my personal experience though lol). But we can share the resources and communities we use to build our sites and skins with you. So here’s my ever-growing list of communities, resources, and learning tools I’ve used, and still use every day, to build my projects.
If I’ve missed a valuable community or resource, let me know so I can add it to the list! And if you’re a coder with resources on your blog, reblog this with a link to a tag that others can follow!
Forums
Jcink Support Community This should be everyone’s first stop shop when it comes to Jcink. The support forum has an active community that’s ready to help with specific problems, and is full of very specific codes that usually don’t ever make it to other resource forums. Learn how to use the search function to find what you’re looking for!
Caution to the Wind The OG jcink rp resource site at this point. It has a lot of what we now consider essential building blocks of our forums, as well as tutorials to teach you how to do things.
jCodes A community that is mostly full of JavaScript coders, with an amazing collection of Jcink plugins to optimize your forum and add functionality. Not necessarily the best for learning, but definitely a wealth of resources.
Sourced A mini-resource community, hosted by Essi. It’s the home of many useful resources for forum development that Essi and others have put together. This is not an active community, but a home for resources.
RPG Initiative A resource forum for more than just Jcink rp’s. There isn’t so much a coding community here, but there are some great coding guides in the codex.
RPG Directory Another general resource site, the coding community here is pretty quiet these days, but it has some classic tutorials and resources worth visiting.
Discord Groups
The Jcink Community Corner A great community for coding, as well as writing and general site management. For newbies and pro’s alike! This is the general home for most of us (afaik), and is probably the biggest/most active group of jcink coders on discord.
Coding Camp A discord community for all levels of coders. Camp offers regular coding challenges, as well as a variety of resources for beginners who might not know where to start but want to get into the thick of things.
General (and free!) Learning Resources
If you’re just starting out, want a general refresher, or are a seasoned pro looking to add some credentials to your name, these resources are for you! All of them are free and are not Jcink-specific.
Free Code Camp Learn how to code for free! It walks you through the basics to build the fundamentals you need to start on more complex projects. I’ve done the CSS and JavaScript courses and cannot recommend it enough.
The Odin Project A full stack curriculum that I’ve heart great things about! I haven’t used it myself so I can’t speak to it, but their JavaScript and CSS courses looks amazing.
Flexbox Froggy A game to learn how to use flexbox and all its corresponding properties by organizing some frogs and their lilypads. When I take a break from coding, I always play a round of flexbox froggy as a refresher.
Grid Garden A game to learn how to use CSS Grid! A lot like flexbox froggy, but with vegetables.
CSS Tricks Not recommended to open until you have a basic handle on things, only because it has a wealth of articles that are easy to get lost in. But if you’re looking for how to do something specific, chances are CSS Tricks has an article on it!
Stack Overflow An active community for coding of ALL kinds, every question about coding ever has been asked and answered here somewhere.
W3 Schools The reference sheets on W3 are tools I reference all the time. I always have a tab with the CSS or JavaScript references up, because nobody can remember all the properties and what they do off the top of their head!
CodePen A place to start creating your own codes! It has live updates, so you can see what you’re creating as you make it. And you can use it to create a nice little portfolio for yourself! You can also “fork” other users’ codes to play with them, figure out how they work, and learn how to implement those practices into your own work. (side note: if you see my profile on CodePen, no you didn’t, it’s a mess)

Hi RPC, I’m Rach. You may be one of the zillion people I know, or you may not know me AT ALL! Either way, I am reeling back my own feral world building and site making habits before my energy collapses like a black hole. Instead, I would like to offer my five brains of ideas to others within the RPC who are looking to build sites, expand lore, and maybe even add a unique language (or languages!) to their settings.
If you are interested in any of the above, please check out my portfolio via the ‘explore’ button on the main page. My ask box and DMs are open if there are any questions. I will be adding onto my portfolio and building a FAQ as I go along.
Anyway, thanks for looking around and hope to hear from you. ♡

JCINK TUTORIAL FOR KRP PART 1 : basics & registration.
what jcink is and how it works
jcink normal vs jcink premium
the structure of a jcink site
how to register a new account
how to edit your profile
how to register sub accounts
how account switching works
in this set of tutorials, you will learn how to use the jcink forum platform. whether you are a complete beginner at forum platforms or want to learn jcink and have used other forums before, this should be the perfect tutorial for all your needs.
what jcink is & how it works
jcink is a forum platform made for the hosting of roleplay sites. it's similar to proboards, boards, or invisionfree but many prefer it over those for all of its unique features.
jcink is not a website, but rather a forum host
each jcink site would be comparable to a collective mewe group, or the collection of blogs that make up a tumblr rp
you can find jcink's main page (where you register new forums and can search for support topics and find contact information for help) here at jcink.com
jcink is free with a paid $9.99 option for premium which allows jcink sites to host 18+ content and gives extra storage etc. more info can be found on that here
you can find jcink's twitter where they post updates if service is down etc @jcink
jcink site structure
here is a dummy site using the default skin made to help teach you how to navigate a jcink forum.
what you're viewing when you first open that link is the board index. this is essentially the home page.
most sites will not look identical to this, and most sites do not use the default jcink skin but rather custom ones.
registering & editing your profile
every site's board index will have a login / register button and a list of the main forums on the site. some, you may have to register an account first before having access to the forums.
you'll use the register button to make a new account, or the login one if you already have one.
you may register on the dummy site to practice. most jcink sites use character names (first last or last first) for accounts, but you can register with whatever username you want for the dummy site.
this is the registration form. some sites will require additional information, but all fields on the left must be filled out to make an account. email addresses can be used for more than one account.
Tumblr media
after registering, you'll have full access to be able to post on the site as well as access to be able to edit your profile.
clicking on 'my controls' on the dummy site will take you to where you can edit your profile.
there are several fields set up so that you can practice setting up / filling out a profile. you can type an answer for 'age' and 'pronouns' and link to an image in the 'avatar' field. any image, it won't show up anywhere on the board for you on this skin. when you've filled them out, clicking 'amend my profile' will save the information.
Tumblr media
on most sites, this will include both your ooc information and your character information. most sites designate which is which.
you may also upload a gif or image under 'edit avatar settings'. some sites require this or use it for their graphics on their skins. there is a file size maximum for this! i suggest a 100x100 gif unless the site says otherwise.
if you register with the wrong name or at any point want to change the name of your account (or in most cases character) you'll do that under the 'change username' link in the same area.
you are welcome to test both changing usernames and uploading an avatar on the dummy site as well!
this is also where you can find your messenger (if there is no link on the board index, but most sites will have one), subscribed topics / forums, as well as all the settings for your account.
Tumblr media
sub accounts & switching accounts
most jcink sites (which are not sandbox sites) require one account per character. i'll explain sandbox sites later.
if you wish to make a new account (for example, when you're making a second or further character), you'll click the 'edit sub accounts' link.
this will pull up a link of all your existing sub accounts, as well as the option to register a new account.
Tumblr media
you are welcome to test the register a new account option on the dummy site. it will automatically add the account under yours as a sub account.
on jcink (unlike on tumblr) sub accounts have all the same permissions and abilities as main accounts, and your notifications for any subscribed topics, tags, messages etc can be pushed to your main account so you won't miss them.
to switch accounts from one to another, you'll simply use the switch accounts option which you can find usually somewhere in the header or top of the skin. in our case, it's next to your username and the log out button near the top.
since this got so long, there will be additional posts for each of the subsequent sections. i'll try to post them all in a timely manner! next up will be forum structures and how to navigate forums.

hello! may i please have some fc suggestions for younger siblings (any gender) for a shay mitchell fc? thank you so much in advance!
Tumblr media
of course! the way shay says "joseph" always tickles me lol. i always have a bit of a hard time with filipino fcs. the filipino culture and ethnotype are so varied for a number of reasons, both cool and not so much, and i find this makes for a wide range of features. that being said, some of these options here will be a little more or less filipino than shay is, but i still think these are all good matches! i find people's obsession with — i'm so sorry, i forget if there's another term for this! not trying to use it out of turn — blood quantum kind of unproductive, and half-siblings are always an option, the characters don't even have to know lol. so these are my options for you and i hope you find some options you love! this was my very long-winded way of saying thank you for the fun challenge 😌

Devvvvv, I'm super sorry if this is a weird ask! But I've always wanted to try out JCINK, but I... struggle so hard at understanding how it works? I can kind of grasp how treading works there, but... Registration/doing an app? Plotting? How do you find RPs in there? Do you have any recommendations for people that want to get started over there? Thank you so much, much love to you always 🤍🤍
Hi!!!! Much love right back to you!!! I'm not sure how helpful this will be as it's just a list of links I've found ut I hope it's somewhat helpful!!! Jcink can seem scary but imo once you get the hang of it it is so so easy.
That one there ^^ Also gives you handy tumblr tags to check to find rps but I'll be going into the directory linking a bit later in the post!! <3
this one and also the one below ^^^ is also a place to find rps!!! it's a directory
Okay so apart from the ones already listed that are places to find rps theres also
And for anyone wondering how they could keep track of their stuff that's also super easy!!! there's even usually specific places on sites where you can have a thread/post SOLELY to keep track of your threads either all in one tracker or by character!! For example here's mine it's an all in one and nobody judge how zoomed in I am or my number of threads ok I HAVE A LOT OF CHARACTERS ADFLDFLAF

Hello, I've been thinking about code and selling code and sharing code in the rpc because someone posed the question to me of what I'd want to happen if someone was heavily editing a skin I sold, and to be honest, my first instinct was 'take my name off it'. That was met with some surprise, but let me explain why.
Code, to me, is a largely democratic landscape. If you want to learn, hundreds of thousands of people and websites have come together to teach you. Masses of people share open source work on codepen, stack overflow etc. Code as a skill is like assembling an especially abstract puzzle where you can only think about the pieces, not really see them. But most puzzles have similar strategies to solve- start with the corner pieces, then the edges, then the most recognizable patterns etc etc etc working your way down to the more and more difficult details. Most of code- most of my job writing code- involves minimizing the amount of time working on those shared strategies so we can have more time to work on the the interesting bits, the hard bits. the bits that make the site we're working on unique and useful. Frankly, jcink is the easy part of code, by and large. Your data is already structured and provided to you in a very particular way. It is inefficiently, but largely documented. Many other people have solved all the problems you are likely to have trying to build a skin. Skinning is html and css for the vast majority of items. It is the easy stuff. If I sell code, that code is now the property of the person I sold it to. It is not shareable or redistributable. You can't take my code and resell it as your own, but as far as I'm concerned you can do whatever you want with it. If I solved problems that might otherwise feel difficult (accessibility and responsiveness come to mind) cool. You can solve the easy ones, like styling and colors and fonts you like. You can add or subtract things that vibe with what you want that code to do. Once it is sold, it is yours to do with what you like when it comes to personal use. This is true of almost all coding contracts that exist in the entire world. If it weren't, no one would ever hire external contractors to do any work for their company, and I can tell you now, even companies which could fully afford to do all their tech in house absolutely do not in 99% of cases if their business isn't selling their own tech. The rule is generally- you may do anything you like with this, except resell it to someone else. So why take my name off it? I don't endorse how other people code. Even in my professional life, I've taken projects off my portfolio because the client took a project I worked on and broke it (imo), often with other professional developers doing the breaking. If a prospective employer were to go look at it, I'd be embarrassed by what it looks like today. Tell me why I (and my team) created a website that was fully responsive, and they went back to make it adaptive in the year of our lord 2022 because they preferred to have pixel perfect views at 3 specific breakpoints rather than a responsive site. I don't know, it's infuriating. I can't cite that project as an example of my work anymore, because it isn't. I would never leave a site in that state.
So, my first instinct with the idea of people using a skin i sell them as a base is 'take my name off it.' I don't want to be associated if responsive/accessible features are lost due to others working on a skin I wrote. But at the same time, where is the line between using something as a base, and editing a few small features? I certainly don't want to be an arbiter of that, or have to field questions or navigate feelings about it. In fact, personally I would not feel upset at all if someone used a paid for skin as a base, and inviting that kind of discussion is the only way I possibly could get upset since people have weird attitudes about a lot of this stuff. So I think the more practical standard is just to put credit, but make it explicit that the work has been heavily altered. Don't resell or redistribute, and you're golden, imo. Anyway, those are my feelings as someone who writes code for a living. I'm interested to hear counterpoints - constructively of course.

My Favorite Forum Scripts
The unofficial part two of My Favorite Skin-Building Scripts, this is a collection of scripts that I wish more forums used! Not quite essential for building your forum, but definitely nice to have from an end user perspective. Like the post draft saver, post bookmarks, ctrl+b/i/u, etc.
These are some of my favorites from the resource forums jCodes and Sourced, both of which have a lot more codes available than the ones I pulled out as my favorites. So go check those resource forums out!
Add # of Alerts to Board Title by Cory If you have more than 0 alerts, it adds that number to the browser tab title. Like how Tumblr has the number of new posts on your dash in the title! Great for pressuring me into replies when my ADHD clicks over to Pinterest. Ctrl+B/I/U by Cory  When you hit CTRL+B/I/U it adds the appropriate BBcode. This is on John’s list to make a default feature, but until then this script is incredibly handy and if I ever have to type [b] again I’ll probably kill something.
Fast Reply BBcodes by Kon Adds BBcodes to the fast reply box! This includes custom BBcodes.
Floating Login by Skyon Archer Creates a popup login screen out of the login link. Great if you don’t want to design your own modal.
Form Submission Script by Black Useful for claims (if you’re not using auto-claims) or other forum functions, where you can customize a form for users to fill out. The form will then post as a reply to the topic it’s posted in.
Membergroup Counter by Essi Pulls the number of accounts in a member group from the member list. Great for quick referencing in your board stats. If knowing ratios is your thing.
Post bookmarks by Cory  Similar to tracked topics, but this creates a new bookmarks page, allowing you to add categories and notes about specific bookmarks you make! This is incredibly genius and I WISH more sites would use this!! Helps me save those spicy posts to read again later~
Post Drafts by Cory Saves a copy of the post you’re writing in local storage every 30 seconds. This has saved my ass countless times because my browsers (and their 400 tabs) like to crash. There’s also a manual save version if you don’t like the auto-save.
Post Tags by Cory Lets you add tags to posts so you can easily search the whole forum for posts with the same tags. There’s another version for topic tags, too! Great for tagging ships, tropes, etc. especially on sandbox sites! Note: all tag keywords should be unique and longer than 3 characters.
Recent Topics Anywhere by Essi Adds your recent topics list.........anywhere. lol. Love it for maximum snooping into everyone’s threads, which I do often.
Tagging Username List by Cory When you start typing out a tag with the @ symbol in posts, a list of usernames that start with those characters pops up. Clicking one of them autocompletes the tag. Great for when you forget how to spell every character’s name lol.
User-selectable Avatars by Cory Useful for sandboxes! It allows users to add a selection of custom avatars into a profile field, and then select the one they want to use from a dropdown menu in the posting page.
Remember, adding scripts and plugins can cause your website load time to slow down, especially on older machines or in places with slower internet. So please be mindful about your member base and what you consider most important to your forum experience.
Please note: Be sure to provide credit to the original coders when using anything you have not created yourself. If you’re using these codes in any commissions, please be sure to read the original coders’ terms of service and/or reach out to them before selling their work with your own. And if you like what they’re doing, toss them a few bucks in their tip jars!

if you like making code to prettify jcink sites do not read this post. if you hail from web 1.0 and miss it and literally know how to make things look like they come from it, please read this post and save my life i'm having an accessibility crisis
does anyone know if there's a way to shut off all the bojangles on jcink RP sites so you just, you know, get the text? instead of all the formatting and images and big blank spaces and fancy fonts and basically everything that looks pretty but makes accessibility a nightmare?
like i've tried using reader view on jcink sites and it's not much better because of all the extraneous stuff that gets mixed in with the bits of RP
i've tried using ublock origin and blocking elements of the skins but aggravatingly, the actual text is in rows that immense images and big blank spaces are linked to as well, so if i block the column that the images are in the rows all disappear too and i still dont get to read the text
i'm basically at the point where in order to actually read a scene in a way that doesn't make me forget where i was in the narrative because it's too much of a state change + time to get to the next paragraph to let me retain anything... in order to read scenes i need to copy/paste each pose into a notepad file and hit enter a few times between poses so that each one is grouped but they're not so far separated that i can't figure out where the next one even is
dont even get me started on splash headers that take up a full screen, i can't even tell if clicking has taken me anywhere because every page looks exactly the same before you scroll
like IS THERE A WAY to undo all the pretty code, please, fucking god please tell me how to turn off the form and give me the fucking function i'm going to die
i'm not an admin i'm a player and i dont want to take the pretty away from the people who love it i just want to read the posts without wanting to jump off a bridge. like. AO3 lets you enforce your own skin on everything you read on their site. is there a thing like that with jcink? please tell me there's a thing like that with jcink
