I finally watched the Swedish Arena Tour version of Jesus Christ Superstar today! Over all, I found it a mixed bag; some really cool things, some less cool things, some REALLY great performances, some more meh performances. Over all, I appreciated at least how committed they were, generally, even if it’s not gonna be one of my favorite productions. I won’t go into a tedious play by play of everything, but here are my biggest take-aways:

1: The guy who played Judas was fucking awesome and by far the best part of the whole show.

2: Judas kisses Jesus full on the mouth in this one, and yet over all the 2000 film version is still gayer lol. 

3: I...look. It’s Swedish, I know that it’s Swedish, but there are certain expectations I have for JCS and holy fuck this production is so fucking white my god. Again, I’m guessing that’s probably just the demographic of Sweden, but you definitely lose something with an all white cast. I’m also guessing there were no actual Jews involved in this production, cause, um, yeah there was some shit they did that would not have flown here in NYC lemme tell ya. Like, the thing is already kinda based on the anti-Semitic propaganda version of the story, that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to lean into that ffs. I’m only half-Jewish but I was feeling super uncomfortable through a lot of it, even more than usual for JCS, so I would definitely put a warning out to any Jewish people thinking of watching this production to be prepared for that cause yikes. (like, I genuinely think those decisions were made thoughtlessly rather than maliciously but the fact remains that the result is rather unfortunate and I would have definitely appreciated being forewarned about it so I’m passing that warning on here)

In jcs sweden the kiss is one of the most tragic i've seen, more than the 2012 bway one. It's just that-

Before that moment jesus rejects judas' kiss not once but TWICE and he finally accepts it when he KNOWS that it's the one judas will use to betray him, as if he's saying "whatever happens between us now doesn't matter anymore, none of us will live enough to regret it anyway"- i'm not crying i'm totally fine

i trash on alw 24/7 but have the entire soundtrack to jcs memorized and still go hard to memory, don’t cry for me argentina, wishing you were somehow here again, etc. 😬 also my fav rendition of jcs is the mega white 2012 bway revival (almost purely by virtue of josh young’s voice)

5. oooo so much. for hamilton, i love seeing washingdad. we all know it's my favorite thing. i also love seeing alexander being whumped. for jcs, i love seeing judas whump. obviously. but i also like seeing when the disciples have that found family type of vibe going on. it's my fav.

and for both of them, I love that gay shit. more gay shit pls.

17. for hamilton, I love the energy that all the canonical characters have. like it's so infectious and they're all so ambitious and hopeful. i assume this is something everyone likes as well. for something more specific, I love the dynamics that characters have. like why are they all so shippable? for jcs 2012 bway, jesus/judas/mary polycule. if people like this production, they like this aspect (there are some people out there who hate it. understandable. i too can enjoy the mary & judas cat-fight dynamics and vibes in most productions). for jcs in general, i love how pathetic they've made these men.

25. oh this is such a good one. and boy howdy have i got some advice. 1. remember that everything in fandom is supposed to make you happy. it's supposed to bring you dopamine. if something/someone is bringing you down, you don't have to be afraid to cut them off. this is your space. 2. create for yourself and no one else. write what you want to see. if you do that, the right people who mesh with you will come your way. and as long as you're writing something you love, the attention won't matter as much. 3. realize that not everyone is going to have the same vibes as you and that's okay! you don't have to be best friends with everyone in the space (I had to learn this one the hard way). but it's the same as advice 1. you can simply go your own ways and make sure your space is curated to your needs. 4. use that block button. if someone is making you feel uncomfortable, go with your gut. you don't owe anyone an explanation. and finally 5. stick with the people who make you feel cared about and supported, and the people you can have a good time with. those people will always be the best.
