Biography:

The best thing about living in Hanjeong as a human was obviously the perks. Having the run of the land, pretty much. Clearly always coming first when it came to things. There were very few downsides… Oh, wait, that was for the pirate born. The descendants of the great Captain Yeonsu. Leading the people in all different directions. After them came the regular humans. Ones with blood that may have been on the island before the pirates. Maybe some new blood. But under all of those, was the poor. It wasn’t like the island was a utopia. Some were ignored. Some struggled from as far back as the founding to the present day. If there was one thing Soomin understood more than anything else, it was that struggle.

She didn’t come from some special line of pirates. Didn’t have a family business or money that she could have inherited when her parents passed. Her family was poor. From one generation to the next. Family legend says there may have been a half blood in their tree but if there was, they were long gone and all that was left was the destitute human blood left behind. Jealousy and envy had long since tainted every single one of them. A taste Soomin could remember from the moment she was born.

A constant fight to prove her worth. Be the best. The smartest. The prettiest. The craftiest. It was almost like a long running con that had to be run with all the people she was surrounded with.

At the age of five, she got her first taste of being disposable. A father that almost sold her to a siren for meat and a mother that was screwing around with a nymph on the down low. When the siren saw how old she was, they backed out. At ten, she got a taste of the true art of bullying when it came from pirate blooded children. Every scrape, every bruise, and every word said against her… etched into her brain…

If only things had gotten easier, gotten better. Maybe that outcome would have been different. but the best couldn’t be rewritten and as it stood, she decided things have turned out just fine.

Despite the hardships. Sleepless nights, hungry weeks and parents that were more ghosts than living beings. Soomin won. She worked hard. Made the right connections, met just the right people and despite her ‘hardships’ and ‘tough background’ she pulled through. Got onto the trade council of the town. Made a respectable person out of someone who was only meant to be a criminal or a wretch.

Oh right, there’s one more thing. You could call it a side project. Maybe a side hustle as the newer generation had coined. But there was more than just trade council money lining her pockets. You see, smuggling was a lucrative business. Especially when you know all the rules around it. Now, Soomin could have stuck with just the basic stuff. Regular contraband that the council didn’t want on the island and in the streets. Getting people out. Getting people in. Kinda sounded boring and who knew there would be such profit to be gained when selling the parts of the natural creatures of the island?

ever since jaejae left sbs it's been like an ongoing storyline in the mmtg lore and it's rly interesting seeing how she navigates it. mmtg is a huge show and she's the quickest rising star in the mc world genuinely everyone loves working with her and she's v popular. but leaving a big 3 national broadcasting company on good terms is very very difficult and sustaining ur career after that is seen as impossible so jaejae is rly trying to prove herself. she's been working 9-5 on top of dozens of mc jobs on her own time it's literally insane it's rly good that she decided to go freelance.

also excellent video in general! i love krystal and jeon yeobin but don't know im soojung. rly funny how krystal is the instagram master teaching them how to do it better, she's so blunt about it. and then they all pose her and take pics to be a contender for new prof pic it's rly fun.

Biography 

An oddball going back to even to her childhood, Nam Min-ji tried to stay under the radar. 

Like most children when she learned the concept of death, she was terrified. It consumed her mind, until her great grandfather died and she saw the process that followed his death. Her fear turned to interest, and lead to her pursuing a career path as a mortician. 

However, a swirl of rumors in elementary school stemming from her focus on death and a horrible coincidence causes most of her classmates to believe she was a harbringer of death. 

No matter how illogical the belief was, she was given a wide berth from then on. It continued into middle and high school, and spilled over onto her brother as well. 

She kept the bullying, whether it was people pretending she didn't exist or an "accidental" shove in the hallway, to herself. She felt telling anyone would make things worse, and hoped the rumors would fade eventually. 

Despite those difficulties, she and her brother wound up close. While she left as soon as she could to a college across the state, she remained protective of her little brother. It doesn't matter they're both in their thirties now, he'll always be her kid brother.

She majored in chemistry, with a minor in photography. Then, she went to New York to pursue an associates degree in mortuary science. She stayed in the city to shadow a funeral director, then went off on her own. Her work took her to all sorts of cities, even a short stint in Korea where she lived with some extended family. 

Once she turned thirty, she started to make her way back to Massachusetts. Finding an area she could live on a mortician's salary wasn't possible in Boston, so she wound up in Nightrest. 

Little did she know how much death would come to the sleepy small town...

She doesn't technically own the funeral home she works at, but she has been promised ownership once the actual funeral director retires.

Let me tell you the story of one of our unfortunate residents who seems to be an ACTRESS on the island. Fate has assigned this individual guidance from THE HIEROPHANT card. But they needn’t worry, their secrets are safe with me.

The table spread before her is adorned with a purple velvet cloth, gilded with golden tassels and a faint pattern of swirls. An ornate deck of cards, tarot, from the look of their length and backside decoration. A voice echoes in the back of her head. It compels her to step forward. And so she does.

Particles of mist dissipate as she walks through them, floating into the air like wisps of smoke. Her long nails scratch against the surface. She pulls one from the middle and unceremoniously displays it on the tablecloth. Her waist bends to propel her forward, closer to the painted picture. A regal man with a pure white robe, crimson cloak encapsulating him emblazoned with a white stripe and a blue motif layered beneath. He stands between two white pillars. In his left hand, he holds the Papal Cross. He raises his right hand in a religious blessing, with two fingers pointing towards Heaven and two towards Earth.

“The Hierophant, huh?” During her instance of paranoia, she combed through her guidebook, fingers gliding down the glossy paper. It usually rests at her bed side table... but it does not project in her dream and leaves her hand and mind grasping for meaning. Someone leans over her shoulder, jostling her arm to point at the relevant paragraph that manifests before her. The text is written in glowing gold. Whoever it is, her long black hair falls over into her own, a perfect match. “Read,” it commands. “Let’s see... You are following convention and staying within the bounds of a ‘tried and tested’ model,” Her expression sours as she reads aloud, eyes darting. Eventually, she settles her chin against the palm of her hand. “You are not yet willing to go out on a limb or offer any new and innovative ideas. Instead, you adhere to the key principles and rules that you know will lead to a successful result... Hm. I would have figured it’d be this one. I am embracing tradition, after all. Just like mother wanted.” “What, what’s wrong?” A boisterous laugh falls from the mysterious figure’s lips. The voice is a mirror of her own, doubled with a deeper one. “Don’t tell me you actually believe in this shit.” “No…” Sihyun scoffs, leaning back to fold her arms across her chest. “Hah, no way! It’s total bullshit used to make people think things. You pull out a card and read the person’s reaction.” The voice pauses, re-emerging in a lower tone, almost a whisper. “The look on their face… When they pull Death, they gasp, when they pull The Lovers, their eyes fill with intrigue. Do you deny your destiny, Moon Sihyun?”

THE CARD FLUTTERS TO YOUR FEET. WHO WERE YOU BEFORE THIS STORY BEGAN?

Sihyun gasps upon waking from her dream ㅡ or had it been a nightmare instead? She exhales, then inhales. The taste of salty sea air is too familiar to overlook. That’s right, she thinks, we’re on a ferry back over. Only an hour would remain before the island of Gwasuwon would be within their sights.

Her eyes wander to the man planted in the seat adjacent to hers. His arms are folded across his chest, head tilted back in a peaceful sleep. His fingers are bare on both hands. A huff of relief ( and partial contention ) spews from her lips. “Stupid. I told you not to fall asleep, too.” No stirring results from her words. “I’m gㅡ” A buzzing at the bottom of her purse catches her off guard. She chooses to ignore it, rising to her feet with a graceful stretch. “Geez, I’m going for a smoke. It’s a good thing Jisung went first or you really...” The sleeping man grunts in response as if he can hear her through his deep slumber.

The woman weaves through the chairs, narrowly avoiding the other passengers. Tourists and returning residents are packed together like sardines and content to chatter over the sound of the motor and the waves. She manages to squeeze her way into a secluded spot, leaning forward against the rail. Only after lighting the cigarette between her glossed couplets does she fish out her phone. She illuminates the screen with a click, pressing the two notifications ㅡ one missed call, and one new voice mail. “Uncle?” Her eyebrows lift in surprise. Without another moment of hesitation, she presses play, tucking the receiver between her head and shoulder.

The recorder beeps. “Hey, Sihyun! Just missed you. I guess you’re a bit busy doing whatever it is you’re planning for your next role. You… you don’t still don’t plan on coming back to the island, right? Who cares about the scandal!” The nerves laced in his voice draws a furrow to Sihyun’s brow. “LiㅡListen, I was thinking about it. I know your mom wants you to come back but I don’t think it’s a great idea right now. We’ve got a lot going on here and it’s not…” He pauses to chuckle. Forced. “Anyway, I think your parents would be proud to know you’ve made it like this, saw something outside this damn place. Don’t gotta come back to some dump. Right, uh… well, give me a call when you get the chance!” CLICK!

The cigarette tumbles from her lips, dropping into the sea. It sizzles only for a moment before sinking. “Aw, crap!” She pouts, backing up from the railing to lean against a safer part of the ferry. Whatever, she thinks, promised I was gonna quit anyway.

Her mind continues to wander, her uncle’s oddly frantic voice still clear. Something bad must have happened and he’s trying to hide it from me. Oh well, how bad could it be?
