Here: If you plan to do a quick reading on this compilation of essay to be exact then drop your plan - I suggest! The 21 essays on translation written in this book aren't something you'll read in a glance. It's simply because they'll take you to the world of (literary) translation from both personal and professional perspectives. I sound a little bit like Bloom but I couldn't help myself but raise this question, “Shall we see (or enjoy) a piece of translation aesthetically or seeing the meaning behind each translated word written there which lead us to an ideological perspectives. I have given an example of how political and ideological a translation could be on my previous post on this book. I also mentioned Burton’s translations as an example which is also mentioned several times in this book. Yet I cannot neglect that there are plenty of literary translated works that I fall simply because of its translations. Here’s an example: Some of my #TiltedAxisTeam friends told me that Hamid Ismailov’s are not easy to be understood even they’re translated into English. In my case, I do fall for Ismailov simply because I can convey and relate to what he wrote through the English translation. Another example: I always adore Marguerite Duras! I always have my head over heels when it comes to Duras. But I do enjoy reading the translated version of L’amant - the Lover. I stock each word there as I put my heart on sleeve. Another interesting point is how this book points to the discussion of decolonisation through literary translation. An example is the translation of the Arabic words and the works of my love- a Saint Lucian poet Derek Walcott. Will elaborate more on the review on this book in my personal platform. Hello everyone! Happy Friday and welcome to the weekend. I’ve got an excellent weekend planned but am taking it easy tonight in bed with my books as it seems the week has caught up with me! Time for a book haul. Violent Phenomena is another addition to my @tiltedaxisbooks collection. I have a subscription with them and I’m always excited to find out what’s coming next. This is a book of essays in which 24 writers and translators from across the world share their ideas and practices for disrupting and decolonising translation. Coincidentally I’m about to start this second book today! I’m buddy reading this with a host of lovely bookstagrammers hosted by @pezzasclassicbooks and @celestes.bookshelf ☺️ This novel is the Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece and a powerful, triumphant portrayal of the American West as it really was. 🤠 Finally, my sister @chrissireads loaned me One Of The Girls to read after we read and enjoyed The Castaways together. This is the story of six friends enjoying a Greek holiday together. One is a liar, one is a stranger, one is a cheater, who is a killer? Hello everyone, welcome to the start of the week with another paperback book haul! Again, I couldn’t resist ordering these beauties, two as pre-orders and one to add to my growing collection of translated fiction books from @tiltedaxisbooks A Town Called Solace was longlisted for the Booker prize in 2021 so that automatically made it a “must preorder.” Clara’s rebellious older sister is missing. Grief-stricken and bewildered, she yearns to uncover the truth about what happened. Secondly, my new translated fiction book, Strange Beasts Of China by Yan Ge, translated by Jeremy Tiang. In the fictional Chinese town of Yong’an, human beings live alongside spirits and monsters, some of which are almost indistinguishable from humans. Told in the form of a bestiary, each chapter of Strange Beasts introduces us to a new creature - from the Sacrificial Beasts who can’t seem to stop dying to the Besotted Beasts, an artificial beast designed by scientists to be as loveable as possible. The narrator is on a mission to track down as many breeds as possible but in the process discovers she may not be as human as she thought. Finally, The Galaxy And The Ground Within which is the fourth book in the Wayfarers series. I really need to catch up on this series 🙈 I’ve only read The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet and I have the rest of the books waiting on my shelves. The writing is absolutely terrific and gave me some comfort that perhaps I could really enjoy science fiction as a genre. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. 以前 , yiqian, is on of those words that has time meaning AND the potential for #English language confusion. 为什么？ Why? Because 前 by itself means in front of but in this phrase it means before. I think this is what @jeremytiang was describing in his #ChangingScriptsPodcast interview in season 2, but I wasnt able to understand it then. I kind of get it now, at least I get the confusion, lol. In English we gesture behind us got the past and forward for the future BUT its the opposite in #Chinese. Thus, it makes complete sense for them to refer to the past being in front of them. Wrap your head around that English speakers. There are other languages that do this with the past, cause lets face it, you can "see" what happened in the past but not the future...but I have never studied a languagr that does this. Til now.
