Mary Lawson's "A Town Called Solace" is told from the perspectives of three characters: an elderly, terminally ill woman in hospital, the young man to whom she left her house, and the little girl who lives next door and whose teenage sister has gone missing. Mary Lawson excels at shifting the tone to show us the world through the eyes of each of her three main characters. This is a darkly humorous and touchingly emotional story that I loved. #reading #literature #books #novel #LiteraryFiction #ATownCalledSolace #MaryLawson #bookworm #BookReview #52BookChallenge #Book51of52 #ReadingChallenge #BookChallenge #52BookChallenge2021 #BookChallenge2021 #ReadingChallenge2021 #bookstagram #BookLover #LibraryBooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CXq0khJosaq/?utm_medium=tumblr

Mary Lawson || A Town Called Solace
Beautiful novel in which Lawson expertly unravels and intertwines the lives of three people. I loved it. @BookerPrizes #MaryLawson #A Town Called Malice Mary Lawson || A Town Called Solace
Bookerprize Longlist 2021 A Town Called Solace is one of those subdued, gentle novels I love. I had not heard of Lawson, I am glad the Booker put me on her trail. In A Town Called Solace she expertly connects two story lines that intertwine more and more.In story line one adolescent Rose runs away from home, leaving younger sister Clara in a frightful state with two parents who hardly manage to…

Gros coup de cœur pour ce roman. Arriver à la dernière page est un crève cœur tant j'avais envie de continuer à suivre ces personnages. À défaut de suite, se dire qu'on recommencerait bien depuis le début. #marylawson #unhiverlongetrude #roman #novel #livre #instalivre #livrestagram #lecture #instalecture #lire #lecturecoupdecoeur #read #instaread #reading #instareading #book #instabook #bookstagram #booklove #booklover #bookaddict #bookaholic #passionlecture #livrovore #ratdebibliothèque #lectricecompulsive #bouquin #bouquineusecompulsive

Hello everyone, welcome to the start of the week with another paperback book haul! Again, I couldn’t resist ordering these beauties, two as pre-orders and one to add to my growing collection of translated fiction books from @tiltedaxisbooks A Town Called Solace was longlisted for the Booker prize in 2021 so that automatically made it a “must preorder.” Clara’s rebellious older sister is missing. Grief-stricken and bewildered, she yearns to uncover the truth about what happened. Secondly, my new translated fiction book, Strange Beasts Of China by Yan Ge, translated by Jeremy Tiang. In the fictional Chinese town of Yong’an, human beings live alongside spirits and monsters, some of which are almost indistinguishable from humans. Told in the form of a bestiary, each chapter of Strange Beasts introduces us to a new creature - from the Sacrificial Beasts who can’t seem to stop dying to the Besotted Beasts, an artificial beast designed by scientists to be as loveable as possible. The narrator is on a mission to track down as many breeds as possible but in the process discovers she may not be as human as she thought. Finally, The Galaxy And The Ground Within which is the fourth book in the Wayfarers series. I really need to catch up on this series 🙈 I’ve only read The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet and I have the rest of the books waiting on my shelves. The writing is absolutely terrific and gave me some comfort that perhaps I could really enjoy science fiction as a genre. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #bookstagrammer #bookhoarder #bookhaul #bookheaven #beautifulbooks #paperbackhaul #atowncalledsolace #marylawson #strangebeastsofchina #yange #jeremytiang #thegalaxyandthegroundwithin #beckychambers #wayfarersseries #literaryfiction #sciencefiction #bookerprize2021 #booksaremylife https://www.instagram.com/p/CcOIlV4LjQg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I'm more angry with myself than usual, I feel like such a terrible person for what's going through my head; I don't want to upset anyone, but with whatever happens I know I will. I want it to just effect be me so other people aren't hurt

You know when you’re too sad to cry you just sit there and think ‘Life is really fucking shit right now’ and just remember everything good you’ve thrown away yeah that sucks

I'm fed up of being considerate towards others when they're just so ignorant and hurtful in return
For instance, some person offered me food earlier and I wasn't going to take it then my friend butted in saying 'Oh of course she'll have it, Rowan eats anything ahaha' and it's not like I could say anything because it wasn't worth making a fuss about but it really fucking hurt me
It's like once when I went in to see my friend who'd had Food Tech and the teacher said 'Oh look, as soon as the food's out Rowan's up haha' can you fuck off please thanks you ignorant horrid people
And there have been tonnes of other snarky references from 'friends' in the past
I know I'm big, I can obviously see that. You don't have to remind me of the thing I'm most conscious about in a sarcastic and rude manner.
It has more of an effect than you think
