THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING (2019) Second film de l’anglais Joe Cornish après l’amusant ATTACK THE BLOCK (2011), THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING nous promettait une comédie “enfantine” teintée d’aventure et de fantasy: piochant dans les mythes arthuriens pour mener son histoire, on découvre en première ligne le jeune Louis Ashbourne Serkis, fils du célèbre pape de la motion-capture -et réalisateur du MOWGLI (2018) sauvé par NETFLIX-. Véritable désastre en termes de rentabilité un box-office, on ne comprend toujours pas POURQUOI THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING rime avec échec financier alors que le film généreux -2h- est loin d’être un crime: véritablement axé jeune public, on note un effort considérable sur le message du film, destiné à rendre confiance en soi aux jeunes âmes. L’enfant destiné à être Roi, c’est Alex, 12 ans, considéré comme la risée de son école, et devant sauver son meilleur ami chaque jour des bad boys de la cour de récré: vivant seul avec sa mère, il va malgré lui sortir la véritable Excalibur de sa pierre, déclenchant une série d’événements inattendus... ou presque, le conte d’Arthur et des Chevaliers de La Table Ronde nous ayant été joliment amené en introduction, sous forme de CGI cel-shadée de bonne facture. Recyclant la légende à travers cette interprétation moderne plein de bons sentiments, THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING se démarque, avec un Merlin à double visage -Patrick Stewart, génial, et son jeune homologue Angus Imrie, bourré de talent-, et une menace “adaptée” aux protagonistes: les trouvailles scénaristiques fusent pour dévier habilement les “règles de réalisme” qui couperaient court au récit, à l’exemple des sbires de la Fée Morgane, squelettes morts-vivants tombant dans les pièges tendus par les héros plutôt que d’engager un sanglant combat. Mais c’est logique, car THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING a beau faire fantasmer lorsqu’on le visionne avec un regard d’enfant, la conclusion de l’aventure, excellente, clarifie sa leçon, expliquant qu’on n’a pas besoin de vivre un voyage fantastique pour révéler le héros qui est en soi: ainsi, chaque gamin ayant vu le long-métrage aura eu 2h d’évasion cinématographique le ramenant finalement à une réalité dans laquelle on l’aura rassuré... Excepté l’aspect bénéfique et psychologique qu’il amène, THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING se savoure également via bon nombre de subtiles touches de style, caressant dans le sens du poil tout amateur de fantasy: on vibre presque lorsque Alex et ses fidèles “chevaliers” traversent les plaines à dos de... poney, après s’être équipés d’armures dans un magasin de souvenirs, tant la scène évoque esthétiquement et thématiquement les meilleurs romans du genre. Riez -beaucoup, sans se moquer-, en attendant, on découvre que Stonehenge est un portail de téléportation, et que Tintagel n’abrite pas l’héritage utopique d’un père absent, lourd sujet qui rappelle sans conteste le sous-estimé -et très adulte- A MONSTER CALLS (2016): quête loufoque mais à ne pas négliger, THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING n’a pas l’ambition de détrôner un certain sorcier à lunettes -même si il se plaît à le citer-, fabuleux one-shot débordant de positivité et d’humour “bon enfant”. Donc, malgré quelques répétitions -les gesticulations de Merlin avant chaque libération de sort magique, les échecs récurrents des sbires de Morgane-, THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING s’avère être un des meilleurs choix du moment, qu’on vous recommande grâce à l’appui moral qu’il apporte, et le divertissement optimiste qu’il apporte. Sans prise de tête, cette dose de bonté est à consommer sans modération, prédisposée à inspirer nos descendants à utiliser leur cœur ET leur matière grise, et pourquoi pas, s’intéresser par la suite au cycle Arthurien du Moyen-Âge.
