I don't want to be sitting here being angry because of Taika's ignorance, I want to be reading fics and making edits and rewatching the kiss from episode 8 over and over again but I can't. In the years past, I've had to swear off jelly belly jelly beans, cracker barrel, shein, harry potter, chik fil a, and home depot. That's just the brands; more importantly to me, I've given up on Jensen Ackles, John Mulaney, Thomas Middleditch, and more than I can possibly think about right now. I have long since learned my lesson in regards to parasocial relationships and hero worship.

Media and art are so extremely important to me as both a coping mechanism and a source of representation and OFMD checks so many boxes for me. It's one of the few unsanitized, non-eunichized queer shows with adult characters, POC, and trans folks and I'm so brutally sad that it's hampered by the actions of one person's lack of social awareness and hypocrisy but I can't in good conscience indulge knowing that when celebrities endorse things like this stupid fucking letter (however well-meaning and done out of ignorance) they normalize this sort of callous thinking.

I'm not sure how to proceed, going forward. I'm pointedly not streaming the show and using my platforms to make other fans aware of these circumstances, as well as sharing information from other indigenous folks who are feeling hurt and betrayed Taika's contribution to all of this. I don't know if it's okay for me to even engage with fan content. I'm not willing to compromise my values by consuming Taika's works without a retraction and it sucks because I am desperate for something to buoy my mental health. favorite thing about them: as with aim i ADORE the way mercymorn talks, her dialogue is so distinctive and makes her so deeply enjoyable to read. also i love how unapologetically unpleasant she is, i feel like female characters are so rarely written that way. oh also the fact that she killed john.

least favorite thing about them: for sure the spending nearly 10,000 years upholding john's empire. i know i know women can't do anything. also the way she and augustine both treat g1deon. also the fact that i can't say her name with my midwestern american accent without it sounding awful.

Dr. Meat Muffin is a wee, 13 year old Meat Muffin here. She's on her middle school cheerleading team, is obsessed with Ocarina of Time, and has too many pictures of Kevin from the Backstreet Boys in her locker. Life's good.

She has younger brothers, 7 and 9 years old. They all go to see the Phantom Menace a few times in the theatre with their friends. The film is soundly enjoyed by all.

Meat Muffin also constantly babysits this Neverland assortment of deranged boys and their sticks and robes and is driven batty by them constantly playing 'Duel of the Fates' nonstop on the CD player while flinging themselves at each other in the backroom. You know she's paid less then minimum wage.

So, anyway, any time Meat Muffin sees Darth Maul on The Clone Wars or in tasteful fan art, a horrifying, borderline PTSD wave of memories sends her. Tons of little boys yelling, hitting each other, smearing black and red face paint everywhere like it's a Bulls game.

Darth Maul, even with his cool baritone voice, is forever cemented as screaming boys in terrible costumes hitting each other with yardsticks.

Darth Maul was ruined for her FOREVER. And she's envious of the rest of you.

idk if you’re a john mulaney fan or not, but i have to say a lot of the furor surrounding taylor for the past year or so gives me so many similarities between them. both ended publicly beloved long term relationships (that contained some degree of creative collaboration) and entered new higher profile ones that received backlash from their fans towards their new partners (seriously, people still call olivia munn a homewrecker in her insta comments three years after they got together (1)

even after she publicly revealed her battle with breast cancer) and ultimately dispelled these myths their fans wanted to believe about them (for him, that he was happily sober and childfree), and then the art they created in the process (ttpd/baby j) ended up rejecting the tabloid gossip people in exchange for genuinely deconstructing the personas they built for themselves in order to survive (watch his colbert interview from 2020 pre pandemic, he basically calls himself a mirrorball) (2)

I'm casually familiar with John Mulaney (and with the gossip around his breakup with his ex-wife) as in I've seen some of his specials and see him on talk shows but I don't especially follow him.

It's interesting because my first reaction was to say I don't know how similar the situations are (his going to rehab, the allegations that he cheated on his wife with Olivia, the quick rebound, etc.) but I kinda see it now. No matter what, their human foibles end up used as tabloid and gossip fodder and these very human situations (whether they're "mistakes" or not) end up as ammunition against them as people and they all become avatars instead of actual human beings in the eyes of commenters online.

Idk, I used to be extremely cynical of celebrities (and still am to a certain degree) which prevented me from "stanning" anyone (including Taylor for the longest time), and generally with few exceptions my stance was all celebrities were assholes unless proven otherwise. But in the last few years, seeing all the vitriol and absolute brain rot online, I feel for them to a certai point, even if they are assholes lol. People absolutely dehumanize these public figures and for the most part, they're all just some guy or some girl. They may be rich and well known but like... they're made of the same flesh and bone as anyone else and that doesn't make them any more special -- or despicable -- than your average person. Except of course for those who really are terrible people lol. I don't have to agree with their life choices for my own life (e.g. infidelity or whatever) but their lives are theirs and their choices are theirs and it's their mess to untangle.

MONTHLY MEDIA: May 2023

If you notice I haven’t read as much this month, it’s because I got the new Zelda game. But between my vanquishing of evil I still managed to fit in some other media! Here’s how I spent the month of May.

BlackBerry (2023) Having grown up in Waterloo Region I didn’t have any interest in seeing a retelling of the story I mostly knew but this was really great! Surprisingly funny and frenetic and a truly unhinged (in the best way) performance from Glenn Howerton. Good stuff.

John Mulaney: Baby J (2023) I naively thought “I wonder how much this’ll touch on the drug stuff?”... turns out it’s all about the drug stuff. Cool that he was talking about it so openly, and made it so funny, but I wonder if there was more material that got cut? He briefly mentions a trip with his son and I would’ve loved to hear more about that. Anyway as a comedy special it’s really great.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) You know I haven’t been interested in the last few Marvel movies but this one felt like it was going to be different..and it was! So many moving parts but I never had trouble keeping track of character motivations or story beats and the whole thing was really beautiful. I mean even the really gross stuff was fun to watch. Keen to go back and watch this as a trilogy down the road.

The Suicide Squad (2021) I was excited to see Guardians of the Galaxy so at the start of the month I rewatched this. Still impressed at how this can be equal parts a gross out dick joke movie and also built on a foundation of community and family. Builds well, nothing feels repetitive, and the finale doesn’t overstay its welcome. Really great stuff.

The Bear (Episode 1.01 to 1.03) Never have I felt so stressed watching television. Really captivating episodes and I’m very excited to watch more.

Ted Lasso (Episode 3.08 to 3.10) Maybe it’s the time away from season 1 and 2, or maybe something happened behind the scenes, but season 3 feels different. Some eps really hit, and even some moments within those other episodes, but it all feels rather unfocused. Maybe it’ll stick the landing but my confidence has been shaken.

The Most Hated Man on the Internet (Episode 1.01 to 1.03) Perfectly paced. Just enough detail to get invested but after 3 eps it felt like I experienced the full journey. Really interested to see the public’s perception of revenge porn shift over time and I can only assume this website (and its founder) played a part in that.

The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt (Page 165 of 500) The first time I read this, it really helped me understand the perspective some folks take on divisive topics. There was a sort of comfort to finally seeing what they’re seeing. In rereading this, I find myself getting angered while reading. The book is over 10 years old and while still relevant, it often feels quaint when talking about the widening gap between political parties. Its neutrality feels almost naive to me? Maybe I’ve forgotten a key chapter that helps.

The Fade Out by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips (It doesn’t have page numbers...maybe 1/3 of the way through) Murder in old hollywood is just so cool. I’m really digging this so far and the art, characters, and pacing feel thoroughly natural. Every reveal is just so casual cause to these characters, it’s just their lives, and I love that. Big fan so far.

Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 8 by by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, and more (Complete) I always liked the smaller stories in this volume that focused on Peter’s personal life...like break-ups and dating other superheroes and stuff. But for some reason the Jean DeWolff/Kingpin/Moon Knight stuff always just felt kinda rushed? I dunno maybe I like everything to be a little more fantastical or suuuuuuper mundane. None of this in-between shenanigans. Give me highschool or give me death.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo) So good. I walked past a house that was redoing their driveway and had a bunch of construction stuff covered in a tarp and I immediately thought “hmm I wonder what I could build” and that...is the sign that I’ve played this game too much. Big fan 10/10 change nothing.

Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Mof1 Crew did some downtime planning ahead of a heist/attack combo that worked out pretty well! We played out events in weeks instead of in real time (for both the players and their enemies) and it worked pretty well!

Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The group is still navigating a rival adventuring party on the island and seeing what happens now that they’ve let their star-collecting duties slip. Big trouble. You can read about it here.

it's kind of stunning how many jack horker fans are in the tags making self ship art when he's like. barely a character and more of a caricature of a right wing asshole, to the point that the narrative refuses to actually give him personal motives because instead it has to be an ironic "haha republicans are assholes, am I right?" instead of genuinely trying to understand OR even just going full camp villain like farquaad

maybe for me this is beacuse john mulaney is such s dogshit voice actor that it ruined his character. but also I think the whole jiminy cricket thing was unnecessary and stupid, only further pointing out how half ass his character is written and how 90% of his character was written like an epic twitter clapback on some rich guy

and the sad part is I DO see the potential, he is so close to either being a comedically evil character or a compelling villain, but the problem is. he's NOT FUNNY!!!!!!!! OR DEEP!!!! AND HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A GOOD VOICE. HE'S NOTHING!!!

ive already seen stuff about this so i want to make it clear. i hope people realize that john mulaney relapsing, having to go to rehab, divorcing his wife and then immediately after dating someone else and having a kid with her is one thing, it's a series of things that happened to him and that are none of our business, they don't impact anybody else's lives except john's and the people directly involved, that's why people were defending him back then and talking about not putting him on a pedestal because he's not perfect etc

john mulaney platforming a transhomophobe without a warning, and cheering him on and clapping and hugging him etc is a completely different thing. dude that HURTS people, that's a direct attack towards his vastly queer online audience. it involves all of us

so here's my point. "stop putting celebrities on a pedestal" worked for the first part, john was considered this untouchable being, and then he did something that was kinda ehhhhhhh and we know what happened

but THIS IS DIFFERENT. the pedestal is on the ground. we are ground fucking floor baby! the standard is literally "don't be a bigot" AND HE DID THAT. there is no pedestal girl it's basic common sense

one thing is elevating someone to godhood, giving them the untouchable perfect person status, and being disappointed when they do one thing that makes them less perfect. another is expecting the bare fucking minimum (not being a bigot) and being met with bigotry.

please. PLEASE for the love of everything that is holy and unholy on this earth, learn the goddamn difference and understand that this is nowhere near comparable as the previous shit that happened
