Notes :
all links lead to the goodreads page of the book, mostly because i like to look at book cover art ;
list features authors/books that i love (T. Kingfisher, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Ursula K. Le Guin, the collections from the British Library Tales of the Weird, etc.), but also a few that i don't like and some that i have not yet read ;
if upon seeing that list the first novel you check out is by Stephen King's you have not understood the assignment ;
not all of those are strictly horror stories, some are 100% science fiction (Brian W. Aldiss' Hothouse for instance).

Books of 2023
I was pleased to read lots of books this year! I greatly enjoyed the majority of these - the only one I wouldn't really recommend was Rated M for Mature - and the favourites are bolded. There were quite a lot of others that I didn't end up finishing, which were mostly memoirs of people who I felt interested in but didn't find their writing very compelling, and some second-world fantasy novels that didn't grab me. Most of this year's reading was historical, contemporary, memoirs, or horror: it was only towards the end of the year that I got some fantasy in there, which is funny as I've always thought of myself as a big fantasy fan - if anyone has any queer non-YA fantasy recommendations, I'd love to have them. The most recent new-to-me fantasy I loved was The Sacred Dark series by May Peterson, if that helps!
I was really happy to read Alison Rumfitt, Torrey Peters, Maya Deane, Lee Mandelo, EE Ottoman, and Brandon Taylor for the first time in particular, and look forward to reading more of them in the future; Ducks by Kate Beaton hit hard and stuck with me; Passion and Play is a massively illuminating read for anyone interested in writing intimate scenes in games and made me feel a ton more confident and intentional in doing so; I loved returning to and crying over old favourites Elizabeth Wein and Terry Pratchett after a very long time.
Detransition, Baby - Torrey Peters
A Perfect Spy - John le Carre
Felix Ever After - Kacen Callender
Lark and Kasim Start a Revolution - Kacen Callender
Youngman - Lou Sullivan

Chicago Daily News Building 1
1929, Holabird & Root, Architects
400 West Madison Street, Chicago, Illinois
By Roger Jones
Tumblr media
Chicago Daily News Building rendering. Source: Ryerson and Burnham Library, Art Institute of Chicago
The former CHICAGO DAILY NEWS BUILDING, now called Riverside Plaza, at 400 W. Madison St., occupies the blocks bounded by W. Washington, N. Canal, W. Madison, and the Chicago River. The building was completed in 1929 and designed by Holabird and Root (until 1927 Holabird and Roche), and dedicated on July 8, 1929. Frank E. Brown was the engineer. The structure stands 26 stories high, with three basements, on rock caissons. The Daily News moved from its former structure at 15 N. Wells St.
The building was notable for its recognition of the Chicago River as an important urban feature, and was the first to feature a large open plaza facing the river. The Daily News Building faces the Civic Opera House directly across the river.
The Daily News had been founded in 1875, and under the ownership of Victor Lawson, had opened one of the first foreign news bureaus among U.S. newspapers. On Lawson's death in 1925, the company was purchased by Walter A. Strong, who soon envisioned a much larger building to house the enterprise.
The new Daily News building, featuring a plaza fronting the Chicago River, was located just east of the central downtown area. Strong desired a building in the "modern style," which would later become known as art deco. In contrast to the Chicago Tribune building, built in the highly decorated Gothic style, the Daily News building soared upward from its base, its relatively thin central slab rising above a base ornamented with carved references to printing, publishing, and the arts.
From the river plaza, two projecting arms gave the building a sphinx-like appearance, the southern arm providing the entrance to a long grand concourse stretching the width of the building, and leading to a bridge linking the Daily News to the Chicago and Northwestern Passenger Station across Canal Street.

Exterior bas relief panels:
The bas relief panels on the building's exterior were executed by Alvin Meyer, sculptor. These included panels over the projecting pavilions, depictions of famous printers over the first floor, and other reliefs, some representing printers' marks, in the spandrels of the upper floors.
Grand Concourse:
Above the concourse originally stretched a ceiling mural of 18 x 80 feet, painted by artist John Warner Norton, on the theme "Gathering the News, Printing the News, Transporting the News." Reporter Marguerite Williams described the mural:
A new kind of mural painting, born of the symbols of modern life and the magnitude of modern building....There, on the ceiling of a thoroughfare 180 feet long, will be read the romance of the modern newspaper ingeniously told by multifarious shapes and symbols - animate and mechanistic. Rhythmic teamwork of man and machine that makes the modern newspaper possible and the paraphernalia of news-gathering that has shrunk the globe into one neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the mural is no longer visible; it was removed from the ceiling in 1993, due to concerns over its condition, and after one of its 11 panels had come loose due to water damage. Originally intended to be restored and placed back in its original position, the sections of mural have languished in temperature-controlled storage ever since. It is doubtful whether the complete project will be viewed again in its full version, to be admired from below as it had been during its 63-year installation.

Good Mourning, All that we see or seem is but a cemetery within a cemetery, or whatever Edgar Allan Poe said. Fast growing as the sycamore, Indianapolis developed and stretched its branches outward, replacing small residential areas with industrial parks. Nestled amongst the residential areas were not only homes, but the family burial plots along with them. In an effort to preserve the smaller pioneering cemeteries, lost to time and industrialization. The Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhoads Cemetery, and Wright-Whitesell-Gentry Cemetery were relocated to the Pioneer Cemetery within Crown Hill, each grave dug the same way they were originally by hand. The Greenlawn Cemetery, established in 1821 was the first cemetery known to exist in Indianapolis, originally located near the White River on the southwest end of Kentucky Avenue. In the year of 1912, over 1,160 pioneers originally buried in Greenlawn Cemetery were moved to Crown Hill. This memorial honors these original citizens of Indianapolis including Colonel Aaron C. Johnson, former Sheriff of Fayette Co. Ohio, Veteran of the War of 1812, Sarah A. Baker, Clarence Cooper, Craighead (four unknown), Mary Francis Cunningham, John Given, W.D., Barbara and Sarah Hanch, Nancy F., Julia P., Infant John and George Hollands, David, Martha R., Mary, John, Moses, John, Rebecca A. Margaret, Martha A. and infants Hunter, John W. and Wife, James M. Johnson, Lawson (two unknown), Lewis (one unknown), Benjamin Orr, Eli, Elizabeth and Mary I. Petticord, George Porter, Phillip, Jenny and one unknown Sponable, Iane and Minnie Wallace, Abner S. West and Benjamin Yates. Wright-Whitesell-Gentry Cemetery, established in 1841. Originally a small cemetery located on the Wright family farm in Lawrence Township. In 2008, twelve adults, fourteen children and seven infants were reburied in their final resting place within Crown Hill Cemetery. Members of the Wright family, headed by the Reverend James T. Wright, founder of the church now known as Castleton United Methodist Church, and extended family members of the Whitesell, Gentry, Easterday and Gates families were buried in the small cemetery with the last burial taking place in 1905. Also interred is Civil War Private John W. Gentry, who served in the 26th Indiana, Co. "I" from March of 1864 until it was disbanded in January 1866. Much like the Greenlawn Cemetery and Wright-Whitesell-Gentry Cemetery, the Rhoads Cemetery was a small cemetery established in 1844. In 1999, twelve adults and thirty-four children of the Rhoads, Rude, Foster, Foltz and Johns families were buried at their final resting site within Crown Hill. Among the identified burials are James Rhoads, died - 1844, Hanna Rhoads died - 1849, Sarah Rhoads died 1857, John Rhoads died - 1860, Emma Rude died - 1862, Willian Rude died - 1866 and William Rhoads died - 1906. Monday Mournings are in loving memory of the dearly departed. By exploring their burial sites we can connect to their lives, continuing to honor their memory so they will not be lost to time. Memento Mori. Rest In Peace, Mori 🥀

Page 3. --- Man Jailed in Toronto Police Court Because They Can't Get Jobs, Is Charge --- LIVELY DEBATE ---- Ottawa, Feb. 3 - Capitalism, for the second successive day, was subject to a barrage of criticism in the House of Commons yesterday from the fiery little group in the "southeast corner” as debate on J. S. Woodsworth's motion, calling for the immediate setting up in Canada of a co-operative commonwealth was resumed.
It was remarked upon in both lobbies that, while a motion of similar purport has been introduced at least twice before by Mr. Woods- worth, and had resulted in an academic discussion only, with both major parties holding apathetically off, an this occasion they had "taken their coats off" and stepped into the fray.
Col. G. R. Geary, J. R. MacNicol and Earl Lawson, Toronto Conservatives, rose to the defence of the present system, which, they said, offered advantages far superior to those of the "communistic state." which, they charged, the C.C.F. favored.
That the ultimate abolition of the present system was inevitable. was the keynote of an earnest address by E. J. Garland (C.C.F., Bow River), who quoted history to show no econemic system not founded on social justice could last.
And as an example of the social injustice existing under this system. he described a morning spent in a Toronto police court.
Out of Works Jailed "A steady stream of men, fine men, between the ages of 18 and 40, filed before the magistrate, charged with vagrancy. They were asked if they had jobs. No, they replied. 'We plead guilty to vagrancy. We've tried to get work, and cannot. And to each of these the magistrate said, Very well. Three months."
"Imagine," said Mr. Garland, "the social injustice of this. The magistrate was sympathetic. He was as much a victim of the system as the prisoners before him. Three months. What for?" and the speaker's words rang out through the chamber. "For the solitary crime of not being able to get a job under a system which makes it next to impossible for them to get one. Do you call this a Christian society? Do you call this a human society?"
Earl Lawson (Cons., W. York) appeared unconvinced. He wanted to know the date of Mr. Garland's experience in police court. "I don't have to give you a date. Go into any police court in Canada, and you will find the same thing," replied Mr. Garland, while government benches laughed.
The financial emperors, and capitalistic kings of to-day were doomed, just as surely as the despotic kings and emperors of history were doomed, predicted Mr. Garland.
He threw a challenge at the government, to "get up and tell us what solution they can offer to these conditions, conditions in which man has. not even the right to work, and is. kicked out of his job whenever the profits show his services can no longer be utilized. No. This system is definitely done. It has definitely come to its miserable conclusion.”
Conservatives Laugh Gloomy as was the future of the present system as pictured by Mr. Garland, its defenders as represented in the government benches, found it amusing, and laughter greeted Mr. Garland's dramatically delivered conclusion.
John R. MacNicol brought Mr. Garland to his feet again by charging he had refused to give the date of his visit to a Toronto police court. Mr. Garland promised to furnish the date of his visit, and the name of the magistrate presiding.
The claims of the C.C.F. were pure socialism, Mr. MacNicol went on. He attacked the attitude, which he said, the C.C.F. group took, that "if we do not take it in an orderly manner, we will have it jammed down throats, in a mighty upheaval."
Long after Earl Lawson. (Cons. York W.) had concluded his ringing defence of capitalism, the cheers of his confreres in the Conservative lobby were heard in the House. Mr. Lawson parried words with Mr. Woodsworth, whom he had accused of "extolling the conditions existing In Russia."
"The hon. member is twisting my words. I have never extolled Russia in the wholesale manner with which he accuses me," cried Woodsworth, shouting his words to overcome the uproar which his interruption stirred from government benches. Despite cries of "sit down." Mr. Woodsworth stuck to his point. He was out of order, ruled Speaker Black, and could not "make a speech now
Bourassa Scores System  In a fiery address, delivered with all the gesture and vehemence which has made him famous as an orator, Henri Bourassa (Ind.. Labelle) slashed the injustices and malpractices of the present system. yet told the House he intended to vote against Mr. Woodsworth's resolution.
This was because, instead of urging all classes of people to co-operate righting the wrongs of to-day by a gradual process, it attempted by at revolutionary change in the very constitution of the country to effect these badly needed changes.
"In the name of all that is true and legitimate in private initiative and private property, which is now being expropriated as fast as it can created in Russia: in the name of ali that is best in our past traditions, Canadian, British, or French, I seriously call upon the members of the various parties in this House to forget for a moment their party differences, and do all they can, not to counteract every new idea that is presented as being a form of bolshevism. but to listen attentively and sympathetically to every suggestion which is made, prepared to accept what we think right.
“Do not let us endeavor to crush the growing feelings and aspirations of a suffering people by telling them that what was good enough for their fathers is good enough for them. Do not let us tell them this is a passing crisis, and that things will adjust themselves. We have deceived them. too long.”
Gordon Wilson (Cons., Wentworth), the oldest member in point of service in the House "by the grace of providence, and the use of sweet cider." thought Canadians should do as their ancestors had done in times of stress: “tighten up their belts and take to the woods."
Chides Miss Macphail He waxed witty at the expense of Miss Agnes Macphail, whom he dubbed Oil Queen of the West" and whom he claimed "had left the ranks of anti-capitalists and invested in oil.”
Proof, he thought, of the capitalistic tendencies of the only woman in parliament was the fact that, after she had addressed the Rockton Women's Institute recently, that body had received that bill for covering Miss Macphail's expenses.
He read from a dispatch which. he said the Toronto Daily Star had sent to all their correspondents, instructing them to interview their local member on the Russian barter proposal.
‘I told The Star's correspondent that I did not wish to make a statement until the government had had time to examine the feasibility of the proposal. My statement appeared in The Star," he said.
Col. G. R. Geary said that like other members, he had watched with considerable interest the formation of the C.C.F.
"I expected this would furnish us with details of the planned economy we are hearing so much about," said the member for Toronto South. "But so far I have been disappointed. We have heard little but a diatribe against capitalism."
Col. Geary asserted the new movement looked toward the capitalization of unrest, whether conscious or not. He declared that the small vote received by Norman Thomas in the last presidential election showed how little support there was in the United States for this sort of thing.
Against Speculators "The member for Bow River made. an attack on capitalism. I think I could agree with him that we should clip the wings and destroy the power of those who manipulate the stock market and otherwise take unfair advantage of the producer and worker," he added.
Something could be said both for and against a central bank, the speaker continued. It would be expensive and, so far as the members. of the C.C.F. were concerned, they would still be in the hands of the bankers.
A blunt challenge to the two "old parties" to state one concrete proposal for bettering present conditions was thrown by William Irvine, (C.C.F., Wetaskiwin)..
The C.C.F., on the other hand, offered something tangible, he claimed.
The C.C.F., he said, "guarantee to every Canadian economic independence."
"Too utterly vague," was the way A. W. Neil, quiet-spoken Independent from Alberni, B.C., summed up the aims of the C. C. F. While much of their program was very desirable, he felt called upon "reluctantly to vote against them."
Brings in Libel Case Grave charges that political pressure had been brought to bear in connection with the case of James Harpell, recently convicted of libel in printing accusations against the Sun Life Insurance Co. of Montreal, were made by Henri Bourassa seeking to show that all large enterprises in Canada were "built upon fraudulent processes or watered stock."
One example, he said, was the lumber industry, which had suffered. from the "brigandage of a handful of the most unscrupulous financiers. in Canada."
"Another example." he continued, "is the operation of the Sun Life Insurance Co. There has been sensational trial of a man in Montreal who. I think, wrote foolish. articles. Not that what he wrote was untrue, but he wrote in a very foolish tone. But the manner in which that trial was conducted is a striking picture of the spirit that prevails. He had engaged 'good lawyers to defend him. Those lawyers made to understand if they took up his case they were done for as far as the favor of the Quebec government is concerned, the head of which is a director in the concern.
"They quit the case.. The case was shifted from one court to another till it reached the judge who I do not wish to be disparaging. I think he is a very nice man-before he became a judge had all his life. been a corporation lawyer, connected. with the organization of some of the most shameful enterprises of this. country."
He had studied a report of this company, he said, a report which I had been "thrown out" through the efforts of Hon. Mr. Robb and G. D.. Finlayson. This report, on its face. showed a diminution of $6.000.000 in their assets. Yet they increased the dividends to their shareholders from 5 to 75 per cent, in one year, with the result that the shares, originally $100, were quoted at some $3,000 to $4,000.”

I still have windblow... I need to rest, tomorrow is moving on to ecoms...
17 years don't you think it is too much...too long.... to fool me???
youtube
3:02 pm
Hmm... I don't know, I applied in Teletech but they told me they are campaigning for someone who has a 1 or 2 years work experience in call center. But they told me I passed my communication skills.... Weird! Of course...
Bound to Concentrix Glorietta with a grab arranged by a recruiter ( Ate Malou ) I met there just there in Ecom.. I thought Concentrix in MOA... Hmm.... I'm for reapply here in Concentrix.
Second try for today...
8:10 pm
Now, in the bus going home...The thing is for reschedule on Thursday coz their internet wifi is not working in Concentrix in Glorietta Makati. It was just an accidental thing coz after Teletech someone approached me again to apply in Concentrix, I thought Concentrix in MOA then that Ate Malou suddenly arranged me or us on grab, a service going to Concentrix Makati ( pasaway that recruiter ). hahaha...
I was thinking, I think I'm not gonna pursue that Concentrix in Makati coz it is kinda too far from Cavite, an additional kilometers or miles for me and most specially additional expenses....
I had my free lunch in Teletech, I grabbed it and I also asked for a headache meds coz I really had this pulsating pain on my head and got a free coffee as well...
No success for today...I will just rest and apply again on Thursday in other companies. Wish me luck!!!
I need a job as soon as possible. I need money... I need a future growth... I have expenses....
10:11 pm
I'm in the house 30 minutes ago... I fed Neko the rottweiler and I cleaned the poops of my baby John here in our living room that became our bedroom coz of nobody wants to visit me on men that I like from previous years. If there are new angels here, you can back track my old entries to understand everything...
Before actually going home or riding the bus at Pittx these 2 new instant friends that I met in MOA and we went together in Concentrix Makati. We figured out that we were all came from Cavite. We ate at "Lawson" before riding the bus going here in Cavite at Pittx coz Roseanne suddenly feel that she is hungry and having headache. So, we decided to eat before going home. Roseann bought a medicine for her headache supposed to be we will eat in Jollibee but we saw that it is loaded of people. I suggested to go up, to check Popeye but we figured out it was expensive, we will be out of budget and we are still looking for a new job or waiting for a job offer. So, I told them to eat in "Lawson" it is like a 7-11... We ate at "Lawson".... Then, after that we went to our own destination. Ronald went to GMA terminal, Roseanne went to Tanza lane and me went to Dasmarinas /Silang bus.
Ronald got his job offer already in Teleperformance. He just accompanied Roseann and simply trying if they can be workmates in the same company.
Well, friends come and go... It is the life of call center people. You will meet a lot coming from different walks of LIFE. Say hi and hello or between hi and hello...
10:31 pm
What else??? The assessment in Teletech is somehow weird... It is like an assessment for pre medicine, there are psychological image test grrr... It's been a long time and there is a "time pressure". It is weird! Some images aren't easy to analyze or are not easy to define... Grrr!!!
It was really funny that I put my esignature message in Teletech, I wrote "Smile though your heart is aching".
10:47 pm
Still Peaches, Peachy, Peach... There is bitterness, bittersweet and longing...
youtube
11:01 pm
I feel bitterish, still I can't find a love life... I wanted mutual... I want someone who can be supportive of me on everything....I still want self-growth...
I will be 50 in a lil while without success... I feel bitterish and self-pity every now and then...
I'm having a hard time to get a bf these days... I want someone who is mature, someone I find cute or pretty man... Someone who is really a man... It is so difficult to find someone now that I feel jealous on a lot of things.
