Wisconsin would operate five dispensaries under limited medical marijuana legalization program
Here's how this would work, if it passes:
by Baylor Spears, Wisconsin Examiner January 9, 2024 Assembly Republicans announced a limited proposal Monday to make medical marijuana available for Wisconsinites with certain medical conditions and received mixed reactions from lawmakers and Gov. Tony Evers.  At a press conference in the state Capitol, Rep. Jon Plumer (R-Lodi) called the bill a “really strong starting point.”  Under the plan,…

The Pac-12 put simply two groups into the related Press preseason top-25 positions, less than just about any significant meeting. The Hotline is a tad much more upbeat. We see about four groups effective at attaining the NCAA Tournament into the Pac-12’s last period of presence. Arizona and USC will be the apparent selections; Colorado and UCLA in addition have reasonable routes into March Madness. Others? We won’t discount Arizona State or Oregon as at-large contenders. Beyond that, the pickings tend to be a tad slim. Presenting the Hotline’s top-25 positions for a season that starts Monday. 1. KansasHunter Dickinson’s arrival (from Michigan) adds among nation’s top people to a stout selection of returnees. It could take time for pieces to coalesce — two-thirds of this roster is brand new — however the Jayhawks will be the NCAA Tournament’s top total seed come Selection Sunday. 2. PurdueThe Boilermakers had been a lock for top echelon of this recreation the minute center Zach Edey revealed their return. The 7-foot-4 rating and rebounding device is regarded as five coming back beginners from a group that won 29 games, after that flopped into the NCAAs. 3. DukeYou require a Duke level to count how many blue-chip leads — record begins with Kyle Filipowski and Jeremy Roach — but also increased college dropout could feel the stress building on second-year mentor Jon Scheyer to create a-deep run-in March. 4. MarquetteThe Big East regular period and event champs get back almost all their secret people except forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper. The principal problem for Golden Eagles: Their particular meeting, which includes the protecting nationwide champs, is completely packed. 5. Michigan StateThe Spartans tend to be extremely well-positioned for an extended run-through the NCAAs as a multitude of blue-chip recruits join mentor Tom Izzo’s gifted selection of veterans. Topping that listing: all-everything shield Tyson Walker. The top Ten appears like a two-team battle. 6. UConnThe 2023 nationwide champions had been whacked by attrition (not surprising) but appear prepared to navigate the roster change with a stellar incoming course that features Rutgers transfer Cam Spencer. Obtain the Huskies early or all the best to you personally. 7. USCFew programs fared better into the offseason than USC, which welcomes right back defend Boogie Ellis and greets in shield Isaiah Collier, the nation’s # 1 recruit. Include a talented frontcourt — keep an in depth attention on Vince Iwuchukwu, an old five-star possibility — and mentor Andy Enfield features perhaps their most useful roster. 8. HoustonThe return of shield Jamal Shead and arrival of wing LJ Cryer (from Baylor) can help the Cougars manage their particular very first period into the tough huge 12. The increased competitors could negatively affect Houston’s seed but will strengthen the roster for NCAAs. 9. ArizonaWe continue to be believing that the departures of ahead Azuolas Tubelis (NBA Draft) and shield Kerr Kriisa (transfer portal) may benefit the Wildcats come March as his or her mins move to harder, much more sports people. If change causes some more early-season losings, therefore be it. Triumph are evaluated because of the few gains into the NCAAs. 10. Hillcrest StateSo what does the encore appear to be? The NCAA Tournament runner-up must handle soaring objectives and enhanced interest. The comes back of Lamont Butler, Jaedon LeDee and Darrion Trammell can help tremendously thereon front side, since will the arrival (from USC) of shield Reese Dixon-Waters, which meets completely with all the Aztecs on both stops of this judge. 11. TennesseeThe Vols washed up into the transfer portal as they are the group to conquer into the SEC if shield Zakai Zeigler totally recovers from their torn ACL once league play starts — of course they look for much more pop offensively. 12. CreightonThe Bluejays get back three double-digit scorers from a group that won 24 games and included a vital transfer in shield Steven Ashworth (Utah State).
But among top-12 groups in the united states is simply the third-best into the stacked Big East. 13. KentuckyThe Wildcats gone back to their particular one-and-done plan for roster building because the force on mentor John Calipari increases. The outcome had been impressive: They finalized the most effective recruits in the united states at three opportunities. Come March, Big Blue should always be a lot dangerous. 14. FAUOur belief in FAU continues to be powerful seven months following the miraculous Final Four run. The Reason Why? Because all five beginners return, as does mentor Dusty might. Nevertheless the transfer to the United states Athletic meeting suggests raised competitors, even more losings and a tougher course back in March Madness. 15. ArkansasMeet more skilled staff into the SEC due to the mixture of a stellar recruiting course, two effect transfers (Tramon Mark from Houston and Keyon Menifield from Washington) as well as 2 first-rate returnees (Devo Davis and Trevon Brazile). Don’t dismiss the Hogs as your final Four danger. 16. MiamiThe Hurricanes have actually a massive void to fill after the deviation of shield Isaiah Wong, but mentor Jim Larranaga’s system should contend. After Duke, the ACC is wide-open. 17. GonzagaWe merely don’t look at exact same degree of skill in Spokane that existed for many years under mentor Mark limited. Transfers Ryan Nembhard (from Creighton) and Graham Ike (Wyoming) can help counterbalance the losing Drew Timme, plus the WCC continues to be Gonzaga’s for taking. Nevertheless the wider trajectory seems to be flatlining. 18. New yorkFrom NCAA Tournament runners-up in 2022 to simple observers in 2023, the Tar Heels regressed massively. Armando Bacot and R.J. Davis tend to be right back, however the battle for 2nd invest the ACC (behind Duke) depends upon the newcomers in Chapel Hill, including Stanford move Harrison Ingram and Notre Dame transplant Cormac Ryan. 19. ColoradoThe 2nd level of Pac-12 contenders begins with all the Buffaloes, which welcome right back ahead Tristan da Silva and guard KJ Simpson. Two newcomers, mega-recruit Cody Williams and transfer Eddie Lampkin (TCU), assistance develop a core four that will propel CU back in the NCAAs. 20. VillanovaThe Wildcats thrived into the transfer portal with Washington State’s TJ Bamba and Richmond’s Tyler Burton (to call simply two). Include returnees Justin Moore and Eric Dixon, plus the post-Jay Wright plunge we saw in 2023 might be momentary. 21. Tx A&MThe Aggies have actually obtained 52 games yesteryear two periods but nothing into the NCAAs, therefore the force on fifth-year mentor Buzz Williams is significant. Four coming back beginners should assist handle heat. 22. Saint Mary’sLed by shield Aidan Mahaney, one of the better people regarding the western Coast, the Gaels should win 20 games (once again) and go back to the NCAAs. And the ground is large due to Randy Bennett’s stellar mentoring, therefore could be the roof reduced because of the not enough high-end skill. 23. BaylorAny system that averages 26 gains per period (in the last four many years) playing in possibly the nation’s best league warrants an area within our positions. Nevertheless the challenge is high for mentor Scott Drew following the triple-whammy departures of Adam Flagler, Keyonte George and LJ Cryer. 24. St. John’sIt should come as zero shock that first-year mentor Rick Pitino obtained substantial skill in a brief period of the time with all the Red Storm. (record includes Oregon State transfer Glenn Taylor.) By March, we expect you'll see St. John’s playing the NCAAs — plus the NCAA examining St. John’s. 25. UCLAThe roster return ended up being enormous, but mentor Mick Cronin is much more than effective at producing an entire more than the components. He won’t have much margin for mistake, particularly in just what should always be an aggressive meeting battle. But try to find an upside shock in Westwood. *** Forward recommendations, remarks and ideas (privacy guaranteed in full) to pac12hotline@bayareanewsgroup.

Heeey prompt thing (if you have time!) What about something where everyone is getting their college applications back and Steve is just getting sadder and sadder because he’s rejected from pretty much everywhere, but he’s trying hard to be happy for everyone else so hides it. But then Billy finds him crying over the latest rejection (I dunno maybe his Dad even tried a bribe/donation and they still said no) and Steve’s thinking he’s dumb and he’s gonna lose everyone and then. (Pt1)
(Pt2) Billy actually reads over Steve’s essay and figured out he might be dyslexic- but no one else ever has. And maybe he gets Steve some help, or gets him to talk about wanting to do something more vocational at college (working with kids in some way?) but just trying to please his Dad or something like that??
Steve has 6 unopened college response letters sitting on his desk. UCLA, University of Michigan, Penn State, Baylor University (He thought Texas  might be fun), Huntington University, and Indiana State. He should get into at least one, Indiana State, because his dad sent the admissions office “extra incentive.” He starts with UCLA, rips it open as best he can with shaking hands.
“Dear Mr. Harrington,
We’re sorry to inform...”
He stops reading, already knows he didn’t make it. He reassures him self that it’ll be okay. One is sure to say yes.
University Of Michigan
“Dear Mr. Harrington,
“We’re sorry to inform...”
Penn State
“Dear Mr. Harrington,
We’re sorry..”
Baylor University
“Dear Mr. Harrington,
We’re sorry...”
He takes a deep breath, and wills the tears not to form. He trembles as if he’s freezing and grabs the Huntington University letter, he prays that he got in to at least one college on his own.
Huntington University
“Dear Mr. Harrington,
Unfortunately you were not accepted for the fall semester.”
Indiana State
This one should be better, he thinks.
“Dear Mr. Harrington,”
He takes a breath.
“We’re sorry...”
“No.” Steve can’t breath. He didn’t think it was possible. They didn’t want him, even with his father’s generous donation. He backs up to the wall and slides down until he’s sitting and buries his head in his knees. Silent tears track down his face, he takes in a shuddering breath. He sits there for a while and contemplates what he’s going to tell his dad. He knows he’s going to get shit for it, and proved his father right, he really is too stupid, and he’s just a disappointment to the Harrington name. He’s pulled out of his sorrow when he hears someone pouting on his front door. He runs to the bathroom and splashes some cold water on his face, takes a couple breaths, and makes sure it doesn’t look like he’s been crying for the past hour. He walks down the stairs and stands in front of the door, preparing to have a “pleasant” conversation with whoever is standing out there. He opens the door and Nancy and Jonathan are standing there with matching grins.
“Steve! Jonathan and I got accepted into Indiana State! And Jon got accepted into an art School in Chicago too!” Nancy cheers as she throws her arounds around him in joy. “Did you get your letters yet, Steve?” Jonathan asks, and Steve just shakes his head, “Not yet,” he mutters out in a fake hopeful voice. “Well when you do, we need to celebrate!” And Steve agrees, mustering the best smile he can. He can’t bring down their moods just because he’s not smart enough. He forces himself to be happy as he congratulates both of his friends.
Days pass, and every time Nancy calls asking if he got his letters, he denies, denies, denies. A week after his rejections, a smiley Billy shows up at his door with a piece of paper in his hand. “I got in to UCLA! Isn’t that great Stevie? Now you and me can move to California, and go to school together and leave this town behind!” Billy exclaims. Steve just grins, happy to see his love happy, “I haven’t gotten my letters yet,” Steve lies and tries to not think about how he’ll never escape Hawkins.
Soon after Billy comes over, he’s got the kids in The Party up his ass, wondering where he’s going and how far he’s going to be “Leaving us behind, Steve!” as Dustin so nicely put it. He denies and says he doesn’t know, hasn’t decided yet. He gets away with lying for about a month and then everyone has received their letters and there’s no way Steve hasn’t received his yet.
He tells Nancy and Jonathan first, the disappointment on their faces hurts more than the actual rejection letters themselves. “Steve, how? You- We studied together every Monday and Wednesday after winter break together.” Nancy asks, a frown pulling at her lips. “Yeah, Steve. I thought we worked on your essay. We wrote a good one. Together.” Jonathan probes, wondering how this happened. Steve sighs, “I sent in an essay I wrote myself. I wanted to get in with my own work. I thought it was a good idea. Guess not.” He confesses. They leave, looking like Steve had deeply betrayed them, and he couldn’t help but feel like he did.
When he tells the kids, they’re not sad. Or disappointed in him. In fact, they’re happy. “Yes! Now we van keep using your house for our sessions! And I’ll still have my best friend!” Dustin exclaims, Steve’s heart swells at the best friend title. At least some people don’t think he’s a total failure.
He saves Billy for last, reading seeing the disappointment when he tells him he won’t be going to UCLA with him. When Billy comes in, he notices right away that the mood is not its usual. “What’s wrong, Stevie?” Steve doesn’t like the concern in his voice, it makes him feel guilty. “Bill... I didn't get accepted into UCLA,” “Oh, Steve, that’s okay. We can study together at State!” quick to solve the problem, not letting Steve’s news get him down. “But Billy, I didn't get accepted into State either. I wasn’t accepted anywhere.” Steve sniffles. He keeps his head down, not wanting to face the man infant of him. “Can I see your essay?” Billy asks, walking away, not waiting for an answer. “I guess, it’s really bad though.” Steve shrugs, and runs to his room to grab the original copy of his essay. “Gotta see what was so bad that all those snotty schools didn’t want my boy,” Billy says as he reads. When he finishes, he looks up and studies Steve’s face for a minute. “Is it really so bad you can’t say anything to me?”
“Have you ever been tested for learning disabilities?” And Steve looks positively offended, “Wh- No? I’m not- No. Harrington’s don’t have problems,” he says, his fathers words coming out at the end. “Since I was little, my teachers wanted to get me tested... But they stopped pushing for it with the help of my father’s money. I didn't need to get tested because.. Well, because Harrington’s don’t have learning disabilities,” Steve reveals, and he spits out the last two words like they burnt his tongue. “Steve, I know why you didn’t get accepted, why you have so much trouble in school.” Steve looks up at him, “I think you have dyslexia, Stevie. I don’t know how miss smarty pants Nancy and her investigator boyfriend didn’t figure it out.” Billy tells him gently.
“This means this isn’t the end, Stevie! You can go to schools, different colleges, that’ll have the right resources for you! You can come to California after all!”
Steve comes to terms with the new revelation and he and Billy take off to the library to do some research. After a couple of days of searching, Steve finds a school in California. He applies, and holds his breath when he opens his letter. With Billy standing next to him and gripping his hand tightly, he rips open the envelope.
“Dear Mr. Harrington,
We’re ecstatic to welcome you for the fall semester! Congratulations!”
Steve lets out a shocked laugh, like he can’t believe his eyes, and turns to Billy. “I did it!” “You did it.”
They tell The Party, and Nancy and Jonathan, and everyone is so happy for him. “I knew you could do it, kid.” Chief Hoppers says, looking at Steve proudly. The kids are a little sad, but feel better when Steve assures them he’ll be back at thanksgiving, and they can throw a week long D&D session at his house.
In the fall, Billy and Steve set off in the Camaro, a tiny apartment and 2 colleges wait for them on the west coast. Billy can’t drive fast enough.

No one knew his name.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, there were stories of an unknown black sailor “who stood on the hot decks of his battleship and directed the fighting.” "This mess attendant, 'who never before had fired a gun,' the story went, 'manned a machine gun on the bridge until his ammunition was exhausted,'" according to Navy Times. Even after the Navy released its list of commendations for heroism at Pearl Harbor, the black sailor still was unnamed. But, when the unnamed sailor's mother heard the news of the black hero at Pearl Harbor, she knew right away, saying “That’s got to be [my son] they talking about.” T. Michael Parrish, a historian and professor at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, said: "The Navy did not even want to release his name. But the African American press, particularly the Pittsburgh Courier, got a hold of it and went to members of Congress who depended upon black votes in the North to put pressure on the Navy Department to release [his] name." Today, 78 years later, the name of that unknown black sailor will now grace a $12.5 billion aircraft carrier in his honor. "In a Martin Luther King Day Jr. ceremony last month at Pearl Harbor . . . Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly announced that a future . . . aircraft carrier will bear [the name of Doris Miller]," according to NBC News. "The U.S. Navy named an aircraft carrier in honor of an African American for the first time," according to USA Today. The Peace Page, since it first began, has shared several stories about Doris Miller, most notably how he never received the Medal of Honor, but this is a new chapter in his story and we are glad to share it during Black History Month. "Miller, known to many as 'Dorie,' was born on October 12, 1919, during the darkest days of the lynching epidemic that blighted the South in the 20th century’s first decades. Only three years before Miller was born, his hometown of Waco became the scene of one of the most brutal lynchings on record when 17-year-old Jesse Washington was burned alive on the lawn of the city hall," according to Navy Times. As previously shared on the Peace Page, after dropping out of high school to help support his family, he joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 19 when he couldn't find work. According to the Navy Times, "At that time, black men serving in the Navy were not only ineligible for promotion, they were consigned to the lowly messman branch, where they were tasked with making the beds and shining the shoes of their white officers and waiting on them in the officers’ mess." "As one of Miller’s fellow messmen said, they were merely 'seagoing bellhops, chambermaids, and dishwashers.' "By regulation, they could not be trained in or assigned to any other specialty, such as signals, engineering, or gunnery. Their battle station was below decks in the 'hole' or magazine, where they passed ammunition up to the gunners. "They were not even allowed to wear buttons marked with the Navy’s insignia, an anchor entwined with a chain, and had to wear plain buttons instead. "Miller himself stated that 'when the Japanese bombers attacked my ship at Pearl Harbor I forgot all about the fact that I and other Negroes can be only messmen in the Navy and are not taught how to man an antiaircraft gun.'" Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said last month that Miller "had just finished serving breakfast . . . All African Americans were below deck, assigned as cooks or personal servants to white officers." "The Navy relegated black sailors to the worst kinds of duty, the lowest grades and the least respected. They were relegated to the kitchens, to cleaning and swabbing the deck, to being abused and mistreated," according to Parrish, who is also co-author of "Doris Miller, Pearl Harbor, and the Birth of the Civil Rights Movement.” "Doris Miller was the son of a sharecropper and a descendant of slaves," Modly said at the ceremony at Pearl Harbor. "He was not given the same opportunities that men of a different color were given to serve this country. But on Dec. 7, 1941, he would not be defined by the prejudice of other people." After manning the gun that fateful day, Miller also helped move injured sailors off the ship and to safety," according to NBC News. "Modly, who stressed the racism black sailors faced at the time in the country and in the Navy, said: 'When the order came to abandon the ship, he stayed and helped. He was one of the last three sailors to leave the USS West Virginia.'" Although bills were introduced to award Miller the Medal of Honor, "the Chairman of Naval Affairs, averred that Miller’s deeds were not deserving of the nation’s highest award for valor," according to Navy Times. Miller instead received the Navy Cross — at the time, the third-highest Navy award for gallantry during combat. It was the first such medal ever awarded to a black sailor. "Both at the time and since, numerous historians and political leaders have argued that gallant as were the sacrifices of the 16 men — all of them white and most officers and petty officers — who were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions that day, Dorie Miller’s exploits were at least of equal distinction, and all the more to be honored because of the oppressive racial stigma under which he performed so heroically," according to Navy Times. Tragically, Miller did not survive the war. Miller died just two years after his act of heroism, perishing with more than 645 other men aboard the USS Liscome Bay when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo in the Pacific in 1943. "Nearly 650 of the more than 900 sailors on board died when the ship sank, and Miller's body was never recovered," according to NPR. Miller was listed as “presumed dead” and after 365 days was reported as killed in action. "He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart, among other honors." "Doris Miller’s death, however, was not in vain. The memory of his life has burned brightly as an example of how an underprivileged and oppressed young man from rural Texas can rise above poverty and racial discrimination — not only to display great courage, devotion, and patriotism, but to help alter the course of American history," according to writers Thomas W. Cutrer and T. Michael Parrish. "Doris Miller’s heroic actions at Pearl Harbor helped launch a revolution," according to Navy Times. In January 1944, less than two months after his death, the Navy opened a modest officer-training program at Camp Robert Smalls for black sailors, commissioning its first 13 black officers on March 17, 1944. "Miller’s heroism — and the legend it engendered — were directly responsible for helping to roll back the Navy’s policy of racial segregation and prejudice, and served as a powerful catalyst for the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s that brought an end to the worst of America’s racial intolerance," according to Cutrer and Parrish. "He deserves his niche in the pantheon of American heroes, for he provided an immeasurably important symbol for black Americans in their struggle for desegregation and equal opportunity — not only in the armed forces, but throughout the breadth of American society." Navy Acting Secretary Modly "said the USS Doris Miller will serve as a reminder of the nation's pursuit for justice and as a tribute to its namesake," according to USA Today. “In selecting this name, we honor the contributions of all our enlisted ranks, past and present, men and women, of every race, religion and background." "The launching of a new ship bearing Miller’s name is among ongoing efforts to cement his place in U.S. wartime history. Doreen Ravenscroft, executive director of the Cultural Arts of Waco, has been leading an effort for the past decade to build a memorial to Miller in his hometown," according to the Washington Post. Ravenscroft, according to the Post, said Miller is a hero worthy of international recognition: “He used his own instinct of survival to do what he thought he should do, and his instinct was to defend his country. The fact that he went beyond the call of duty, we need that today — doing that extra, doing more than what’s expected.” [Photo from Naval History and Heritage Command]

I would love to hear your headcanons for “The Play’s the Thing” and the “Crossing”?
I did The Play’s The Thing here! For The Crossing:
- Brienne did not need to threaten Bronn to get him to deliver the message to Jaime. He’s Team Braime. The sword did ensure that she got the service for free, though.
- Jaime is only staying with Cersei after her coronation because he’s afraid she’ll go even more off the rails if he leaves. Last time he left for an indefinite period of time she got herself arrested by the Septon who she empowered and then she blew up the Sept at Baylor! Jaime Lannister: One Step Away From Writing An Anonymous Op-Ed To The New York Times.
- Jaime definitely napped on the way back from Dragonstone. Confronting your enemies and turning on your house is exhausting!
- I wanted to give us a Jon-Jaime moment to parallel their first meeting in Winterfell, but this time with Jaime on the back foot
- telling Jaime how he is honorable is the best way to get him to do anything. Brienne doesn’t realize that, though; she’s just genuinely reminding him

Madam Speaker, I rise today heartbroken upon hearing of the sudden passing of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and occupants Christina Mauser, Keri Altobelli, John Altobelli, Alyssa Altobelli, Payton Chester, Sarah Chester, and Ara Zobayan.  Kobe was an inspirational leader, advocate, athlete and father. He inspired people from across the world to strive for greatness, to be the best, and to invoke what he called, the Mamba Mentality.  Kobe not only inspired the people of California but the entire world. From his incredibly difficult jump shots, to his selfless charitable efforts, Kobe always worked hard to stand up for what he believed in and to be a great father to four beautiful girls whom he loved.  This unimaginable tragedy has rocked this world and left many hurt. Kobe Bryant finished his NBA career among the best to have ever played the game.  His legacy will live on forever and we must come together to support the entire Bryant family and all the families affected through this tragedy.

Justin Wilcox takes BART to work
and other reasons he’s the perfect fit for Cal
The Bears’ third-year head coach has the right playing style and personality
By JON WILNER | [email protected] | Mercury News
Berkeley, Cal -- Chris Pezman received confirmation that Justin Wilcox was the perfect fit for Cal the moment Wilcox didn’t accept the job.
It was the second Friday of January 2017, and the Bears were deep into negotiations with Wilcox to replace Sonny Dykes.
The term sheet was ready. They expected him to accept. The only thing missing was his signature.
But at that moment, Wilcox put everything on hold and … vanished.
“The rumor is that he went on a hike to clear his head,’’ Pezman recalled. “He knew once he took it, everything would change. So he unplugged. He wanted to clear his head, so he was ready for the moment.
“I thought that was really mature. A lot of guys would rush, rush, rush. But Justin has another level of maturity. He’s got the quiet confidence to have his own plan.”
That quiet confidence was just one of the reasons Pezman believed Wilcox would be the ideal head coach for the Bears, and what Pezman thought mattered a great deal.
He was the athletic department’s chief operating officer — the point man on the search, responsible for putting candidates in front of athletic director Mike Williams and chancellor Nicholas Dirks.
Two hours later, Wilcox returned, signed the term sheet at the bar at the Claremont Hotel, and began overhauling the program.
“He’s on track, if not ahead of where I thought he’d be at this point,’’ said Pezman, who left Cal in late 2017 to became the athletic director at the University of Houston, his alma mater. “It wasn’t going to be a one-year fix.”
Not with the remodel that awaited Wilcox.
Cal stunned the college football world by terminating Sonny Dykes just a week earlier, on Jan. 8 — the oddest of times — but Pezman had already determined the Air Raid was all wrong for the program.
He also knew Dykes continually had an eye on vacancies elsewhere — Baylor had been the most recent instance — and that Cal’s season-ticket base was eroding as the losses piled up under Dykes.
If a change unfolded, Pezman wanted to be ready.
“I had been thinking about where we were as a program, and we weren’t going to beat Washington or Oregon or USC for the elite athletes,’’ he said earlier this week.
“Instead of playing 49-46 games, we needed to shorten the game. We had to play small ball, like Stanford and Utah. You can’t have your defense on the field for 40 minutes. It can’t sustain that.”
Pezman understood one of the most important but under-publicized aspects of college football:
The need for alignment between the head coach’s personality, his style of play and the school’s natural recruiting pool.
Dykes’ system, which depended on recruiting elite athletes at the skill positions — many of them from other regions of the country — didn’t fit with the Bears’ recruiting model.
“We were going to Texas and Mississippi, but the bulk of our talent should be coming from in-state, and we weren’t getting it,’’ Pezman said.
“There’s no reason Cal shouldn’t get those 6-foot-4 or 6-foot-5 volleyball-types, who can grow into their bodies and be offensive linemen, defensive ends, linebackers, tight ends or even H-backs.
“That’s the recruiting sweet spot for Cal.”
Pezman had the strategy figured out. Once Dykes was dismissed, it became a matter of identifying candidates who could execute.
For advice, he turned to Andrew McGraw, assistant athletic director for football administration.
If anyone knew who and what would work in Berkeley, it was McGraw. He had served in various capacities for five head coaches (Keith Gilbertson, Steve Mariucci, Tom Holmoe, Jeff Tedford and Dykes) and, crucially, had worked closely with dozens of coordinators and assistants.
Pezman approached McGraw.
“Who are some coaches you’ve come across that would be strong fits?”
According to Pezman, McGraw’s response was immediate:
The search should start and end with Justin Wilcox.
“I knew if they put Justin in the room with (Cal decision-makers), he would rise above the other candidates,’’ said McGraw, who became friends with Wilcox during the latter’s three-year stint as an assistant coach under Tedford.
“I knew the kids would thrive with him. He’s been in their shoes (as a safety at Oregon in the late 1990s). He knew what Cal was like. He’s a west coast guy. And I thought he would connect with recruits and our donor base.”
But there was another layer, McGraw explained, an interconnection between Wilcox’s personality and the Cal ethos.
“There’s an anonymity to coach at Cal and being in the Bay Area that suits him perfectly. He’s all about the players. He’s not a self-promoter. He’ll do that (media) stuff, but he views it as a necessary evil.”
Wilcox owns one car — it’s 30 years old — and has taken BART to work during stretches of his tenure in Berkeley.
He’s an avid reader, especially with regard to books on leadership.
And when Wilcox vacations, he vacations: He leaves the country and tunes out.
“He has the best work-life balance of all the coaches I’ve ever worked with,’’ McGraw said.
Which meshes perfectly with the campus culture: It cannot be football and only football for the players.
In order to thrive in Berkeley, they must fit academically and socially.
Same with the head coach.
As Pezman plunged deeper into the hiring process, he saw what McGraw had seen.
Williams, the athletic director, provided the cover.
“He allowed me to operate without having to get caught up in the politics,” Pezman said.
“What Mike wanted, the thing he cared most about, was the culture fit. And once he met Justin, he got it. It wasn’t a hard sell.”
Wilcox also worked within the economic framework — the Bears had limited resources — and impressed Pezman with his desire to hire the best possible coordinators and assistants.
His choices for offense (Beau Baldwin) and defense (Tim DeRuyter) had head coaching experience.
“His ego didn’t get in the way,’’ Pezman said. “He’s not flash and sizzle. He’s just got that quiet confidence.”
