“We’ve all held the sign,” Jordan says with a long-suffering sigh; Derek dodges when he tries to push it into his hands, but crammed in the seats between Jackson and Scott, who has Allison on his lap, there’s nowhere for him to go. “The guest holds the sign. It’s the rule.”

“Allison is the guest,” he tries arguing. “I’m just here because Ethan’s sick.”

“Allison’s held the sign,” she says cheerfully, sticking her legs into his space instead of simply moving to her own seat, which would afford her plenty of room. “You’re the only one who hasn’t.”

“You’re the only one who hasn’t,” he mimics in a high-pitch tone. The rolled up poster board hits him over the head and he grabs for it, wondering if he’d get kicked out for throwing it over the edge of the glass in front of him and onto the ice.

Because if so, he’s probably going to do it.

But Kira shoves her way past Jackson before he can do anything about it, bullying him into getting up with a hopeful twitch of her eyebrow. “We can hold it together,” she says, dropping into the now vacant seat next to him. Derek immediately feels better about the whole thing where his friends gang up to embarrass him, until she adds, “And it’s just for warm-ups anyway, stop being a baby. Stiles will be out any minute.”

Derek scowls at her even as he accepts the corner of the poster, gingerly, even though he knows he’ll be covered in pink glitter within two minutes. The edges are tattered from being crushed in too many hands, crepe paper flowers smashed against the glass in front of him often enough that they’re pressed flat. Everything about it screams it was made by Allison’s kindergarten class, except for the careful bubble letters perfectly centered: Marry me, Stiles Stilinski.

He sighs and tries to plaster a smile on his face when Jordan raises his phone to get a picture of them. He can feel his mouth twitch up into something into something that feels more natural when Allison leans over and whispers, “Cora falling into the pool in front of Isaac,” in his ear, and Jordan must consider whatever he captured to be good enough because the phone disappears as quickly as Derek wishes he could. 

A few cheers go up as players take the ice to warm up; there’s so little fanfare that Derek almost misses it, already checking Jordan’s instagram to see what stupid caption he put up with the photo. Lydia’s influenced his best friend in a lot of good ways, but the new compulsion to post things on social media is something he could do without. It’s not until the sign in his fingers starts to tilt dangerously towards the ground that he realizes Kira’s let go of it, and he gives her an irritated look even as he puts his phone in the cupholder on his seat so he can grip it with both hands. 

“Wave it around a little,” Allison says next to him. She’s alone in the seat, obviously having switched with Scott, and Derek feels a bit of relief before he realizes that being trapped between her and Kira will be his downfall. Jackson and Scott he can glare into submission; he’s never been able to do the same with the girls. “It’s supposed to be fun. Relax, no one is going to care.”

He cares, though that’s clearly no concern of theirs. It’s the entire reason that he said no when Jordan first asked him if he wanted the extra ticket; individually, Derek is friends with all of them, but he’s never felt comfortable in the group. Combined with watching a sport he knows nothing about that has its own traditions that he also knows nothing about, he’s feeling wildly out-of-depth and slightly self-conscious. 

He blames it on Laura and her penchant for always making fun of him for doing things wrong when they were growing up.

Allison beams when he wiggles the sign half-heartedly. He does it again as a few of the players drift closer, the puck sliding back and forth easily between their sticks as the ice fills up with men in green uniforms. Derek’s at least seen enough snaps and posted videos from his friends to know what’s coming—Stiles will eventually make his way over to the glass and beam at them, someone (Kira, likely) will use her powers for evil and make Derek stand up for a photo, and then he’ll be able to ditch the sign for the rest of the game. He can grin and bear it for the happiness of his friends for five minutes, at the very least.

But when Stiles slides to a stop in front of them, stick tapping along in an odd pattern, he doesn’t beam. He stops and tilts his head, looking Derek dead in the eye with a small smile on his face—and then he shouts something that Derek can’t quite hear with the noise around them—children yelling Stiles’ name, two teenagers shrieking behind them, grown men begging for an autographed stick. He shouts it once more, waits a moment, and then he makes a face and skates away.

“That’s—weird,” Allison says slowly. The noise around them dies down quickly with Stiles’ departure, but he still leans in close. “What’d he say?”

“Couldn’t hear,” Kira answers for him. 

Derek feels—itchy, too flushed, and certain that he’d done something wrong. He’s not sure if Stiles was upset or not; he’d been smiling, Derek thought, but it could have just been a twist of his mouth, because he’s probably trained not to be rude to fans anyway—but it makes him deeply uncomfortable to think he could have offended him somehow. He stays still in his seat, letting Allison and Kira talk past him, standing up abruptly when it becomes too much.

“I’m just going to get something to eat,” he says, though his first stop is definitely outside in hopes that the freezing St. Paul sky can pull some of the heat from his cheeks. 

Allison’s hand seizes his borrowed green jersey sleeve, stopping him from moving. “Wait, he’s coming back,” she says. It makes Derek want to leave faster, if anything, but her feet are planted firmly in his way and he knows she’s not above tripping him. So he’s stuck in place when Stiles skates up in a small shower of ice, looking out at the rink helplessly when Stiles points straight at him and sends a puck sailing over the glass.

Derek catches it automatically. Both Kira and Allison are on their feet, leaning in; he thinks it’s just a regular puck until someone reaches out and turns it over, and there’s silver writing scrawled across.

How about a date first?

Derek jerks his head up and looks through the glass. Stiles gives him a hopeful look, then puts his hands together in a clear charade of a child begging. He doesn’t know what to say—it’s so far out of left field that he has no clue how to respond, but it seems that his friends do. 

“Yes,” Kira calls happily towards the ice, then squeals as Jordan picks her up, and Derek follows her movements to see him pass her something to drop over the glass. 

It’s his business card, he realizes, as Stiles peels off a glove and picks it up. The green and gold ones that Lydia had just redesigned for him, shining brightly under the lights of the arena. Stiles looks down at it, then at him, eyebrows raised. He nods slowly, a clear request for permission.

Derek nods.

★ calm n collected during fights, usually the one saving kid flash from his demise when he decides to run off like an true idiot ♥︎ often jokes about them being the new speedster n' green lantern duo until they actually turn into them n' she/he/they are just like "... fuck."

★ despite the fact that they are mostly calm, has gone manic n' insane a couple times during battle ♥︎ most likely times: battle w/ amazo, fight with the injustice league, episode 16 in the simulation (i see them going manic as a way to give the rest time to escape, ends up 'dying' to the beams)

★ makes fun of batman like it's her/his/their full time job. they do it like rent's due next month ♥︎ it's a hal jordan thing- started when he would babysit her/him/them n' had no one to cover for him during JLA meetings so she/he/they grew up witness batlantern bicker n' fight like there's no tomorrow

★ the team LOVES listening to her/him/them talk about their time on other planets. ♥︎ m'gann clings onto her/him/them so much when she first joins the team cause like "omg! someone who is spends time off earth!"

★ if she/he/they got a chance to face hal or john during s1e26 when they were under klarion's control, you best believe she/he/they beat his ass n' proceeded to take photos with them unconscious ♥︎ definitely did the rapper poses where they squat with like prayer hands or peace signs over their unconscious bodies ♥︎ if she/he/they had social media for their green lantern persona, you BET they posted it with no context n just "😈🙏🏻🥱🗣" ♥︎ did it w/ p much every other male leaguer too ♥︎ left the women alone cause 'respect our big sexy buff talented women' ♥︎ made robin email the photos to all the leaguers as holiday cards

★ as the team grew n got older, she/he/they either joined nightwing in leading the team or moved on to the justice league w/ zatanna n' rocket ♥︎ probably preferred staying w/ nightwing tho ♥︎ 10/10 is the :D bubbly nice fun mentor who's all joking n' giggles then she/he/they go into missions n' the younger team members are like "what in the hell"
