i have more thoughts that i need to think deeply about regarding strange new worlds s2e8 but i will say that was an amazing episode. the depiction of ptsd was so raw and real, a little too real if you can relate, and i really enjoyed the focus on dr. m’benga (and christine) and i love him more after this episode. knowing more about his past, what he has been through, how he’s done these “bad” things but he actively chooses to be a doctor, a man who helps and heals people instead of hurting them. he truly has the best bedside manner and genuine care for patients and he has this calm spirit and disposition. dr. m’benga would make you feel safe. also, i hope the shower scene made y’all wake up to the fact that joseph m’benga is one fine chief medical officer. that is all for now.

Secrets you keep
Even the closest of friends keep secrets from one another.
Tumblr media
Christine knows Joseph's secret. She saw the knife on his belt; she knew what he was setting out to do.
Tumblr media
He never told her what happened, and she never asked. Both of them prefer to keep the truth to themselves.
Erica, on the other hand, wears her heart on her sleeve.
Tumblr media
In spite of their friendship, she can't know. Her loyalty to her friends and to her captain would tear her in two.
So Christine lies.
Tumblr media
Erica is left unburdened.
Tumblr media
The secret remains between the doctor, the nurse, and a dead Klingon.
Tumblr media
How long before it breaks them?

S2 episode 19 (A Private Little War) I should be asleep but I’m gluing images of fish to my notebook instead.
Here’s the trek:
- THE MUGATO??? (I’m sorry lower decks mentions this creature…)
- First time seeing Spock bleeding? I mean there’s Journey to Babel but other than that I think this is the first time
- “Bones can you save him?” God he’s so desperate and so is Bones
- “I’m sorry. I’m worried about Spock.” (Edit: not sure who says this but fairly certain it’s McCoy or Kirk)
- M’Benga?!? :O
- “I can’t leave Spock at this time.” Even with another doctor there, McCoy doesn’t want to leave Spock alone
- McCoy asking if he has a choice like he wouldn’t go with even if he did
- Now two of McCoy’s boyfriends are dying. The upside is that it’s a McCoy episode. Downside, they’re dying.
- Is she using an aphrodisiac plant on Tyree?
- M’Benga and Chapel time! SHE WAS HOLDING SPOCKS HAND?!? Oh god.
- McCoy must think he’s somehow taken acid (edit: again idk what the fuck I was talking about)
- “Our souls have been together. He is mine now.” EXCUSE ME
- Love how casual M’Benga is, like yeah just do whatever Spock says when he wakes up
- “And I have the wrong husband.” Ooh shots thrown
- Oh my god! I never would have guessed that the Klingons were involved!
- “Hit me! Harder!” Scotty’s so confused as to why Spock is asking this and why trained medical professionals are agreeing
- “Have you gone out of your mind?!” Yeah bones has a point, 1. It’s stupid 2. She’s definitely controlling Jim
- Literally stop with the Mugatos
- Did McCoy just get shot and not give a fuck? Yeah.
- Do NOT give him more weapons it was a bad idea to begin with and it’s a bad idea now
- “Spock, you’re alive?” McCoy’s happy
Eh, okay episode… not really sure what happened. I’m posting the next as well cause I just didn’t have a lot of thoughts on this one.

November fluff prompt 9: resting peacefully
“How’s she doing?” M’Benga looked over Chris’s face and grimaced, taking in the purple bags under his eyes.
“Captain, you should let me examine you,” he said gravely. His voice was hoarse with four hours of shouting orders over the chaos of the Gorn attack. Chris waved him off and pushed past toward Una’s biobed.
“I’m fine, Doc.” He lowered his voice as he approached. Una was unnaturally still and pale, and Chris swallowed. “What’s her status?”
“She’s stable,” M’Benga said. “She lost a lot of blood, but Nurse Chapel and I repaired the damage, and she should recover normally. She’ll be back to duty in a few days.”
Chris nodded. He focused intently on Una, counting each rise and fall of her chest. M’Benga squeezed his shoulder. “Chris, we’ve got her. You should go get some rest.”
“Hm?” Chris blinked. “Oh, yeah. I have plenty to attend to, I just wanted to check-”
Una’s head shifted. Chris shot to her side, M’Benga forgotten. “Una?” He laced his fingers with hers as M’Benga checked her readings for any signs of pain or complications.
Una’s eyelids twitched, but didn’t open. She let out a quiet groan that Chris decided to understand as his name. “Hey,” he said softly, and leaned down to kiss her forehead. “You’re okay. Go back to sleep.”
Una rolled to a more comfortable position. She took Chris’s hand with her. M’Benga pulled up a chair for Chris and patted his shoulder, and Chris scooted as close to Una’s bed as the chair would fit.
When M’Benga passed by to check on them ten minutes later, he found Chris pillowing his head on his and Una’s joined hands, and Una’s free hand tangled in Chris’s hair. They were both fast asleep.
M’Benga smiled and closed the privacy curtain.

The OH and I are actually managing to watch S2 of SNW and I think The Cloak of War might actually be the finest ep of any series of ST ever except maybe a few of the DS9 ones.
Not only is it Star Trek does MASH *perfectly*,
Not only does it manage to actually square the circle between “war is utterly fucking terrible and we should be willing to make ourselves fucking vulnerable to avoid it” and “but there are indeed circumstances where all that will mean is throwing innocents under the bus and we actually have the duty to stand up if we have the capacity”;
Not *only* is it a couple of fucking *superlative* performances that Babs Olusanmonkun and Jess Bush, especially Babs, deserve Emmies for,
But it actually properly leans into one of the most essential lessons that pretty much every viewer watching this show really does need to know - seeking personal redemption *is*, in fact, a worthy thing to do, and something we should all strive for and seek to encourage, but an *essential* part of doing that is to respect the needs of other people you have harmed more than your own wishes. Your wish and need for redemption *never* trumps the harm you did to others, and you *never* have the right to demand that they do emotional - or other - labour for your redemption.
This applies whether you are a war criminal - hopefully *not* many people reading this - or someone who did racist things before you realised they were racist - pretty much every white person reading this. Genuine redemption means putting the needs of others before yourself and learning to live with your own guilt and your own faults, not demanding that people more marginalised than you who were hurt by your actions forgive you.

Just to put a cap on my contributions to the “broken biobed two is a valid Chekhov's gun” discourse … per M’Benga in “Under the Cloak of War:”
Biobed two has shut down again. Ever since the Gorn attack at Finibus Three, it hasn't been the same.
Since the broken bed is already associated with Gorn aggression, I believe it stands to reason that the broken biobed will matter with Gorn (including their eggs) affecting the Enterprise again.
And, who knows? We saw that Gorn trying to access the computer on the Cayuga. Maybe if the bouncing baby Gorn rip Batel apart, instead of fighting each other for dominance, their next order of business could be to actually fix the biobed. (And they say screen time is bad for kids….)

star trek: strange new worlds (2022-) s01 e08 “the elysian kingdom”
[ID: three screencaps of doctor m’benga and hemmer in the enterprise sickbay. they are both wearing elaborate robes; m’benga is in red, with a bronze crown atop his head; hemmer’s clothing is silvery shades of steel blue. m’benga is speaking of his daughter. he says, “she’s dying.” hemmer replies, “i’m so sorry, doctor. let me help,” and places his hand on m’benga’s shoulder. m’benga gazes back at him, emotional. end ID.]

since snw s2 is over, i want to recap some of my favorite moments from this season because it was so good to me:
neera ketoul being a badass lawyer who i want to be like when i graduate law school and pass the bar soon. seriously, being a law student and seeing a black female lawyer in my favorite sci-fi show where i don’t expect much law-type stuff was so exciting for me.
human!spock— literally just everything about him. he was so cute and watching him grapple with human emotions in a more intense and upfront way without being able to keep them at bay as well as normal. and him being able to tell his mother how much he loves and appreciates her, and speaking of that..
amanda grayson making an appearance in this season was such a treat. she’s so beautiful and graceful and she loves her baby boy so much. it was wonderful to see her coming to his aid and then discovering that he was temporarily human.
jim & la’an falling in love in the alternate universe. even though it broke my heart in the end, it was so beautiful to see la’an letting her guard down and being open with jim and trusting him and falling for him. it was truly a wonderful little love story.
jim and uhura becoming friends because as i stated previously, their friendship was done perfectly and it really showed how jim is just a good guy who cares about helping others, which is why he’ll make such a good captain who is worthy of following.
pike hugging una, hesitantly at first because he was so relieved that her trial went the way it did. their relationship is so good because they work so well together but also have this personal connection that is essential to things running smoothly on the enterprise.
uhura’s song + saving the crew in the musical episode. i got chills and i cried and i just loved uhura being the star for the moment, which really showed how important she is to the crew now and will continue to be in years to come.
scotty!!!! i didn’t see it coming but i was so happy that they introduced scotty in the finale. martin quinn was great casting and i feel like the essence of scotty’s character was captured well. i can’t wait to see more of him.
i grew to love dr. m’benga so much more this season and he was extra sexy, starting with he and chapel fighting klingons in the first episode which was hot let’s be honest, and then there being more focus on him and his trauma from the war, a slight thirst trap in the shower, but showing that despite the fact that he can kick ass when needed, he chooses to be a person that heals rather than hurts others. a truly great and interesting character.
