Run-D.M.C. - Raising Hell (15/04/1986)

Run-D.M.C. fue un influyente grupo de Hip-Hop formado por Joseph Simmons (Run), Darryl McDaniels (D.M.C.) y Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay). En 1986, lanzaron su tercer álbum de estudio titulado "Raising Hell", que fue un gran éxito tanto comercial como crítico.

"Raising Hell" fue un hito en la historia del Hip-Hop y ayudó a popularizar el género en la corriente principal de la música. El álbum incluía varios sencillos exitosos, como "Walk This Way", una colaboración con la banda de rock Aerosmith. Esta canción fusionó el rap y el rock, y su videoclip se convirtió en un éxito en la cadena de televisión MTV, lo que ayudó a impulsar la popularidad de Run-D.M.C.

Otro sencillo destacado del álbum fue "My Adidas", que se convirtió en un himno para los fanáticos de Run-D.M.C. y también contribuyó a su relación con la marca de ropa deportiva Adidas.

"Raising Hell" también incluía otras canciones influyentes como "It's Tricky" y "Peter Piper". El álbum fue aclamado por su producción innovadora, letras contundentes y el estilo distintivo de Run-D.M.C., que consistía en rapear con fuerza y usar beats de batería simples pero potentes.

"Walk This Way". Se considera que es la primera colaboración de rap rock que también llevó el hip-hop a la corriente principal y fue la primera canción de un acto de hip hop en alcanzar el top 5 de Billboard Hot 100.

Raising Hell fue el primer disco de hip hop que alcanzo la cima de Top R&B / Hip Hop Albums. Raising Hell ha sido clasificado como uno de los mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos. En 1987, fue nominado a un premio Grammy, lo que convirtió a Run DMC en el primer grupo de hip hop en recibir una nominación. En el mismo año para este álbum Run-D.M.C. fue nominado a Álbum del Año y ganó Mejor Álbum de Rap en los Soul Train Music Awards de 1987. En 2018, la Biblioteca del Congreso lo incluyó en el Registro Nacional de Grabaciones como "cultural, histórica o artísticamente significativo". El álbum fue reeditado por Arista Records en 1999 y 2003. En 2005 se lanzó una edición ampliada y remasterizada que contenía 5 canciones inéditas.

Al vender más de tres millones de copias, se le atribuye a Raising Hell el presagio de la edad de oro del hip hop, así como la era de los álbumes del hip hop, lo que ayudó al género a alcanzar un nivel de reconocimiento sin precedentes entre los críticos.

RUN DMC

Hailing from Hollis, Queens, New York, U.S.A. is the one-and-only RUN-DMC, which I believe is the greatest Hip-Hop group of all time. 

If it wasn’t for these dudes a lot of the Hip-Hop scene that later came in the ‘90s would not have been what it was (in my personal opinion). These dudes bring that positive mental attitude (which I’m all about), but with legitimate edge, style, and fun.

I love the New York Hip-Hop scene during it’s inception (late ‘70s/early ‘80s; which also happens to be my favorite era of Punk Rock music as well). My favorite era of Hip-Hop was absolutely 100% the ‘80s. There seemed to have been an actual purpose & message in the music and the art and the fashion and overall vibe of Hip-Hop culture. Although I’m no expert (not by any means) on the genre, I still appreciate a lot of what was put into the communities because of groups like RUN-DMC.

For anyone who is not aware: Jason Mizell (aka “Jam Master Jay”), Darryl McDaniels (DMC), and Joseph Simmons (aka “RUN”; “Rev Run”) are RUN-DMC. 

There’s certainly an intellectual appeal to the lyrical work (along with the sick beats & hooks) of RUN-DMC, and I believe there’s a tremendous amount of credit & recognition that has to go towards Jam Master Jay.

Jam Master Jay (rest in peace) is my all-time favorite DJ (although I don’t know enough about the genre to be able to list anyone; truth be told). Jay was RUN-DMC’s secret weapon - without a doubt this man made some groundbreaking work in the music scene. There has never been a more perfect balance of Rock & Hip-Hop music. This dude literally took the impossible and made it possible with his creative ability to combine various styles of music to create an atmosphere for RUN & Darryl to thrive upon (lyrically). Years ago I found out about how Jam Master Jay actually started his musical journey when he was a little kid playing trumpet (and eventually learned other instruments; guitar, bass guitar, percussion, etc) - which truly shows in his legacy as a DJ. 

Probably one of the most unique & controversial styles when it initially arrived in the mainstream (somewhat similar to punk rock when ya stop and think about it), Hip-Hop has had many pioneers: RUN-DMC being one of the main influences to the scene (and to people world-wide). I don’t have much else to say other than I wish I could have seen RUN-DMC live in New York City in the ‘80s! The energy, the style, the mind-set, the good humor, and the uplifting values that these dudes were rappin’ about was absolutely essential in helping shape not only music culture, but also New York’s culture (from the very streets of Hollis, Queens). Absolutely brilliant.
