Lessons, playlists, advice: A conversation with Fortune Shumba Q&A by Banzii Mavuso.

1. What lessons have you learned in the past year that are readying you for 2018?

So many lessons in 2017, some of them- That I matter too, that I should never apologize for being myself even when at times it makes others feel uncomfortable. That my dreams are valid and deserve to be put right on top of my priority list. I also learnt the art of letting go... of people, and things that no longer belong in my space or feed my soul and grow from all of that instead of being guilt ridden over it and dwelling on negativity when I know I am magic. Basically I realized my power, took it, owned it.

2. What is Fortune listening to right now?

Busiswa's Bazoyenza is my ratch anthem, love to work out to it or just get turnt to it. Also playing Beyonce's 4 album on repeat, such an underrated masterpiece.

3. What do you think about the Indie/alternative landscape in the South African music industry at the moment? Do you think South Africans are finally supporting said artists?

The indie kids are straight up fucking shit up. It's that whole "if they will not give it to us then we will just kick down doors and break glass ceilings to go get it". People are watching, people are supporting, it is not exactly where it should be but you cannot say you do not see the revolution happening. You see a lot of brands trying to be as daring and different and often associating themselves with indie kids in the game. You can see mainstream artists borrowing from the indie kids and even though some may not acknowledge them, some actually do. Yes, we have seen a couple of Indie local musos do amazing things over the past year- Think Nonku Phiri or BCUC or Moonchild Sanelly. Everyone is suddenly coming to the party and it feels great to be part of that whole movement.

4. Reality is, money and success will start rolling in naturally after you find your professional niche and enjoy what you are doing – what do you do to stand out as an indie/alternative artist in South Africa?

I honestly do not ever feel the need to do anything else either than truly being myself to stand out. It took a minute I must admit, but after a while I realised that there was only one of me in this world and that is the one thing that would set me apart from everyone else, just being my blunt, cooky ole self. Some reject you, the real ones stay on and ride with you, others come to the party later on, it's all a process. But at least you know you never have the pressures of keeping up with being some made up persona to keep people interested in what you do. For instance, I mostly write about my lived experiences instead of unrelatable, unrealistic shit and some think that is gross as hell while some appreciate the sincerity and bravery- those are my people, that is my niche.

5. What advice would you give to unsigned artists in South Africa, who aspire to be heard in the country and abroad?

Just do you! The rest will follow. When you are yourself it shines through and the right people will come to the party. As cliché as it may sound, nothing can ever go wrong if you become yourself at all times. The most "unattractive" layers of you will normally make people want to pay attention and support you, so do not ever hide anything as an artist, even when you think people might find you too weird or less cool if you open up about that stuff- be an open book, share your experiences, talk about your fears, your joys, your lows. That is the stuff that people wanna hear- not big expensive cars that you have never even driven or cool rich friends you do not even have, well according to me... cause, different things work for different people generally. We are all trying to figure this shit out at the end of the day and what works for the one guy won’t necessary work for the next.. ypu know?

6. Describe your sound to people who do not know you.

I used to tell everyone I make Alternative music before, for the lack of a better term until it dawned on me, my music was more than just that. There are so many elements to my music and the more I grow the more some of these flavours show themselves. I am influenced by Punk, Soul, Tribal, Pop, Kwaito, Bubblegum, Ambient, Electronic and Rap music. I then coined a term for it, well- I named my music after an African dish- Chakalaka. That is what I call my style of music these days. Just a huge melting pot of different flavours that make up one, unique sound that is served on a sparkly plate of Electronic music.

7. Share a powerful mantra that you live by.

Something my mom says to me all the time when I am quarter to giving up- "It's always darkest before the dawn".

8. Close off by telling us about your upcoming projects & where can people find you on the Internet?

Will be releasing a single real soooon called "Trash!" which I worked on with Vox Portent. This year I will also be releasing the final instalment of my EP trilogy which began in 2015 with my Dawn EP that was then followed by Daylight, this year I will be releasing Dusk, so excited to share that  and then some with everyone. Also gonna do a few more collabs with other artists this year.
