April Fanfic Roundup!

I feel like I've read far fewer fics this month, but I've read a couple of great longfic WIPs, just fewer short ones... And while I thought I'd been reading less I've apparently read way more again...

So overall I read about 610k words from 23 fics including another reread of The Menagerie... It's been a hard time, don't judge me. The book is on order and when it arrives I'll read it again.

And as usual, here are my new bookmarks from the last month, most recent to older.

I don't think I ever claimed only to bookmark stuff that's finished (I'm very mercurial about this), but just in case, the following do include WIPs.

Piece of my Heart by Runningempty

Hurt/comfort with nurse Mickey caring and falling for Ian while the latter waits for a heart transplant. Lots of cute pining and a bit of medical malpractice shush now.

Chasing Dreams by JessiJ1997

Very sweet story where Ian and Mickey have an adorable dream friendship as children. I've been having a lot of decision paralysis about starting new fics, but this one from the GGE caught my attention and was very cute.

So... I never seek out A/B/O, and I'm picky about soulmate fics, but I've decided cross can write anything and I'll be there now. So I was there. And it was delicious.

Pirate Gallavich! Mickey stows away on "Captain Redbeard" Ian's ship and becomes his... Ahem cabin boy. Delicious, but watch the tags if you're squeamish about power dynamics.

Workhouse Rock by Suzy_Queue

Delightful Mickey and Ian having fun at prison work camp! It's been getting a little angsty as it gets towards the final section, but I really love this one... As always Deena's writing is beautiful.

I alluded to starting this one in last month's roundup... Wildlife photographer Mickey and his new intern Ian are unable to keep things strictly professional for more than about six seconds. This was another one where Ian and Mickey get to have a lot of fun together, which is lovely... then there's a dramatic turn and a really tense few chapters. WIP, but it does currently end in a not-angsty place.

(Recently I went to the zoo and they had elephants and lions and I thought of this fic a lot... On behalf of my Nikon-user photoing friends, I do have to 😠 at the Canon supremacy 😝.)

Safety in the Workplace by Romanticalgirl

Post season 5 breakup Ian starts a new job at the warehouse where Mickey works... A sad-and-sweet reconnection story. I haven't read the follow-ups yet. Had me in my heartbroken Mickey feels. 

Someone to save you by whatyouandihave

Superhero Ian and villain Mickey! From this year's big bang (I'm reading very erratically and haven't read all the ones I want to yet). I really loved Ian's powers in this, and the fights between Ian and Mickey. I really enjoyed it.

I think I missed this one off last month's list for some reason... But I'm enjoying this WIP military dystopia a lot. Slow burn though, so I'm waiting to see how things develop with baited breath.

Favourite thing you’ve created (or seen created) for the fandom?

Unsurprising my sportsAU: In My Veins Like Lightning

Why is it your favourite? I just love the story and the boys I wrote and so many of their angsty and sweet moments.

Did it come easily or was it hard to create? Both? Some parts came quickly, a lot of the scenes just came to me. But there were some sticky parts I struggled hard with.

Last ao3 fic you commented on? Darkness comes before the Dawn by @ian-galagher @creepkinginc and @transmurderbug and @crossmydna's Locking Down the Locksmith -- both amazing.

Biggest WIP heartache you’ve ever experienced? Things Beyond Mistake -- I am still heartbroken over a year after reading it. What an amazing story I would give my left arm to have finished. We miss you Grayola.

Favorite trope or head cannon you like included in a fanfic? Cocky!Mickey and Tough!Ian. Love when they fall into bed right away and catch feelings after.

Least favourite? I'll read it all but don't love when Mickey after one interaction is all in. Where's the tension! Where's his tough/untrusting side? Also the slow slow slow burns make me insane... not that that stops me.

Secret or surprising kink or trope? A/B/O and really unique AU's like Maintenance or The Circus

Describe how you feel after you’ve created something new? Like I drank some warm tea. Like things have clicked into place for a moment in time.

Top hype man you have that always helps you get across the finish line: I'm lucky to have a few but @bawlbrayker always helps with a beta and a kind word or helps me choose when I'm stuck between options. Special mention to @runawaybrainsc @gallapiech and @blue-disco-lights who have been clutch and hugely supportive.

February Fanfic Roundup!

This month I read slightly fewer words overall than January (about 570k), over much fewer fics (28), but not as much less as I thought, partly because I got a cold and spent a sofa day reading. Silver linings.

I'm going to be honest 300k of those words was the same fic twice... And I can't even link to it because it's not on AO3 any more. But... You can buy it as a real book in May (with the Gallavich serial numbers filed off a bit)! So:

The Menagerie by crossmydna

I downloaded this from AO3 when it was announced that it was going to be published, as I'd seen recs and it was on my to read list. Honestly at that point I was still paddling around the edges of the fanfic smut-lake, so if I'd tried it then I might have baulked. But! I have been learning and growing 🤣🤣. In particular I've learned that I'm fine with most things as long as the writing convinces me the characters are into it. And so when all the cover reveals came out I decided to give it a go as a sneaky try before you buy. 

And... Well. There is a reason this is being published. I devoured it over a weekend. I was so absorbed I forgot how to talk to people. I told at least one person I was in thrall, and when I finished I felt so bereft I thought the phrase "did I just get subdropped by a fanfic?" So I read it all again but slower. It's smutty and spicy and, yeah, BDSM (if on the milder end), and it's so well written. I love all the OCs (except the one who's supposed to be a douchebag). And it has what I think is the most ~earned~ Gallavich kiss of any fic I've read.

This challenged Cooperative Gameplay for my favourite Gallavich fanfic (CG will always be special to me, but the pacing in The Menagerie is pretty damn near perfect, while CG does go slow in places). At the very least it's a solid second. I look forward to having a physical copy to reread (and hide somewhere carefully because I don't want to explain shibari to my kids until they're much older 🤣).

With that outburst out of the way... Here are some of my other favourite fics from this month, in the order they appear in my bookmarks (most recent to older).

The Cabin Across the Lake by catgrassplantdad and WhatTheBodyGraspsNot, with art by gallawitch and heymrspatel

What a dream team! When I saw these names together I had high expectations... It did not disappoint. Ian goes to a lake cabin with his douchey boyfriend, and gets captivated by the hot guy in the cabin across the lake. I hope whatever a alignment of stars occurred to let this happen occurs again sometime so we can get a chapter two.

A Series of Unfortunate Dates by wehangout

This was such a delight... Genuine laugh out loud in places. Mickey asks various friends and acquaintances to set him up on dates. Recommend, particularly if you're in need of cheering up.

Flights of Fancy by JR_ooc and My_Brain_Melted

This one also helped cheer me up on my sick day. And (because? 🤣) I got to imagine Mickey and Ian in pilot's uniforms.

Until it Bleeds by HannibalsTie

An angsty take on Mickey and Ian reconnecting after Mexico and Ian trying to regain Mickey's trust (canon divergent). Gave me the good sad feels.

Truth or Dare by MiriamT

This was another super fun one... Meddling bitch Lip sets up a drinking game of truth or dare between closeted Mickey, Ian and Ian's gay friends (Caleb and Trevor).

Attitude Adjustment by Captain_Jowl

Another delightful nsfw fic. I'm just gonna own it at this point. I like what I like. This was my first Captain_Jowl fic... I will be looking into more once I've reduced my tab overload a bit.

Katie by My_Brain_Melted 

Ian and Mickey get inadvertently match-makered by a kid that won't stay put. Katie (the character) gave me anxiety and made me grateful for my own much less zoomy children... But the story and meet cute is very cute, as is the second chapter.

Coming Attraction by Suzy_Queue

For the foreseeable future, I suspect there will be a Deena fic on every one of these roundups... Sorry not sorry. This one was a colleagues enemies-to-lovers, stranded by a storm story and it was so good I think I grinned from start to finish. 

The Stylist by NotHereNJ 

Mickey wants his hair dyed, Ian is the stylist. Might sound like it should be fluff but this was emotionally intense enough to derail me from another fic I was also invested in... I wasn't expecting to have so many feelings about Mickey having his hair washed, but I did!

Having a Ball by Calli_Writes and Gallawitch

Yeah yeah, more smut. But this one also deals with 3x666 trauma, so you know. Existential smut.

I could link to basically everything I read this month because I don't think I DNF'd a single one... But if I tried I would get overwhelmed or I would feel like I had to do the same every month and I would never do another Roundup. So, please know that if I commented on your fic that means I finished and enjoyed it, even if it didn't make this list! If I don't like it, I don't comment. 💜💜💜
