Animal of the Day!
Albert’s Lyrebird (Menura alberti)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Southeastern Australia
Size (Weight/Length)- 900 g; 90 cm; 80 cm wingspan
Diet- Insects; Worms
Cool Facts- While the Albert’s lyrebird lacks the lyre tail of their superb cousins, their voices can’t be beat. These songbirds have the smallest range of any continental Australian bird with only 3,500 individuals remaining. Albert’s lyrebirds can mimic many species of other birds, using their calls to create a mixtape mating call. The calls are placed into a specific order that groups of male lyrebirds memorize, creating the music fad for the season that is used to entrance females with sick beats. Female Albert’s lyrebirds build enclosed nests with a small entrance to lay a single egg. As with many Australian birds, the Albert’s lyrebird is threatened by invasive species and poaching for feathers.
Rating- 13/10 (DJ’s of the forest.)

I've never cared that much for this part of Dracula! Whenever I read it, I thought it was a bit of a drag... ula. But Re: Dracula's got me! Barely anything happened (I mean, a man did disappear), but I felt myself begin to tear up just in anticipation. I don't want anything bad to happen to these men!!!
Also... I never thought about this. I have two notes but one connects with future events, so I'll probably save it.
On 12 July through Dardanelles. More Customs officers and flagboat of guarding squadron. Backsheesh again. Work of officers thorough, but quick. Want us off soon. At dark passed into Archipelago.
Do you think... they know? I'm being superstitious!! Of course, I am. I'm just struck by the Customs officers wanting to be quick... as if afraid of what might happen if they delay the Count's trip?
The second point, I won't get into spoilers, but I'll just leave it here:
On 14 July was somewhat anxious about crew. Men all steady fellows, who sailed with me before. Mate could not make out what was wrong; they only told him there was something, and crossed themselves. Mate lost temper with one of them that day and struck him. Expected fierce quarrel, but all was quiet.
Perhaps, the Mate is just temperamental... but there's something strange about him just attacking someone else out of nowhere. Now, if he were English and this were a different novel, I'd just rationalize it as the odd trope of "man sees someone different than him and resorts to beating the issue with his cane", but I dunno. Something fishy.

On This Day in Cryptid History
July 18th: In 2013, Virginia hunter Roger Williams caught a strange looking creature on his trail camera, which he believed to be a juvenile bear, but cryptozoologists think is Slothfoot, a cryptid seen throughout  the Americas that resembles a massive, bipedal sloth.
