Sunset with you ~ J. WY
Tumblr media
Synopsis: A day in a life with your boyfriend Wooyoung.
Pairing: bf!wooyoung x fem!reader
Genre: established relationship, fluff like so much fluff
Warnings: none
Word count: 2,668
A/N: hehe first fic on tumblr is of course going to be about the one and only, Jung Wooyoung…because the brain rot continues and I want him so bad.
Tumblr media
The warm glow of the morning sun seeps through the curtains and basks the room in hues of orange and yellow. You and your boyfriend lay asleep in your bed, breathing in steady synchronization and hearts beating in slow paces; your head rests atop his chest and your right arm laid across his abdomen, while his left went around the back of your head and that hand lightly grazed the exposed skin of your waist. In conclusion it was peaceful and perfectly silent, the only sound being the occasional wooshing from the air vents…that was until the blaring sound of your boyfriend’s alarm cut through the peace and quiet.
You flinch slightly at the sudden sound, all the while Wooyoung remained completely unmoving and undisturbed by the sound. You bury your face in his side as your hand softly patted his stomach “Wooyoung…baby, your alarm is going off.” You spoke, sleep very evident in your voice. Wooyoung hummed in response, still barely awake as he didn’t quite catch your words “Your alarm is going off.” You said a bit louder, which finally seemed to register in his tired head as his other hand fumbled across the nightstand, before he eventually put a stop to the horrible sound.
And once the sound had ceased, silence had enveloped the room once more as Wooyoung moved to lay on his side, his other arm going around your waist so he could pull your body closer to his. His eyes then open ever so slightly gaze locking with yours, a small smile forms on his lips “Mmmm…good morning, beautiful.” He spoke, voice also thick with sleep as his eyes closed again. You smile as well “Good morning, Woo.” You replied, nose slightly bumping his as you pressed a light peck to his lips.
A brief silence falls between the both of you, before you begin speaking again “What time is it?” You asked him and not a moment later Wooyoung answers with a simple “Nine thirty.” You hum in response “We should probably get up.” You say, feeling the effects of sleep wash over you again and he simply hums also feeling the same effects. A peaceful silence fills the air once more and the both of you find yourselves asleep again.
An hour passes before your eyes open again and Wooyoung was still out cold beside you. You laugh softly “This man…could sleep forever if he wanted to.” You muttered to yourself, gently moving strands of his hair from his eyes. A smile then forms on your lips as you lean closer to him and gently press your lips to the mole under his eye. At that Wooyoung moves to lay on his back, muttering something incoherently as he did. The smile remains painted on your features as you stretch your limbs and rub the residual sleep from your eyes.
You then move to sit on the edge of the bed, before you grab your phone from atop the nightstand; the screen lights up, revealing a picture of Wooyoung you had set as your lockscreen and the time that read ‘10:33’. You breathe out a soft sigh, looking over your shoulder to see Wooyoung still peacefully asleep; he’s worked hard this past week, he needs the extra sleep, so you decide to not wake him up.
Once you’re out of the bedroom, your legs naturally take you to the kitchen, where coffee was waiting to be made. You let out a yawn, hands trying to tame your messy bed head, before you eventually tied it back with the hair tie that was around your wrist and soon enough you were standing in front of the coffee machine.
You open the cabinet above the machine and take out two mugs, along with a bag of coffee grounds and a filter. And once you start the pot of coffee you step over to the fridge, to see what you could make for breakfast; you open the fridge door and you’re met with not a lot sitting atop the shelves. “We definitely need to go grocery shopping.” You muttered to yourself, your gaze bouncing between a carton of eggs, side dishes Wooyoung’s mom gave to you and things that probably needed to be thrown out. “Guess we’ll just have to make do with what we have for right now.” You concluded, grabbing the eggs and the containers that held the side dishes.
While you were stood in front of the stove, with a couple of eggs in the pan, a light from behind flashes and that causes you to whip your head around toward the source; standing there is Wooyoung, with his new camera up to his right eye. Your eyes widen as your hands go up to cover your face “Wooyoung! I’m not even dressed.” You complain, as another flash of light happens. You hear him laugh lightly “Oh come on baby…you look beautiful every day.” He says and you roll your eyes, before peeking through your fingers, making sure that he wasn’t holding up the camera anymore; he wasn’t, so you remove your hands from in front of your face and turn back to the stove, removing the two fried eggs from the pan.
And not even a moment later, you feel Wooyoung arms wrap around your waist and his head dip to the crook of your neck “I’m not lying when I say you’re beautiful every day.” He spoke softly against the skin of your neck, as his arms tightened around you slightly.
You breathe out a soft sigh, a smile grazing your lips as you lean into him “I know you weren’t, Woo…I just wasn’t expecting the camera.” You say, both hands moving to rest atop his. He hums halfheartedly and you could feel the pout that had taken form on his lips “But I love taking candid photos of you…you always look so pretty in them.” He confessed truthfully. You chuckle softly “Okay…just don’t show them to anyone.”  You reason and you feel him nod his head “I promise, I won’t…maybe.” He said, quickly pulling away from you. You whip around while exclaiming “Jung Wooyoung you better not!”
Tumblr media
Soon enough, the two of you had found yourselves sat at the dining table, eating breakfast and enjoying your cups of coffee as a comfortable silence surrounded the both of you, but sometimes silence was better than talking…especially when it was someone you loved dearly, because that’s how comfortable you were with Wooyoung; you didn’t feel the need to make conversation with one another…why would you when being in each other’s presence was more than enough.
And after you both finished eating and washed the dishes, you found yourself on the couch, pen in hand as you wrote down what you needed to get at the grocery store. “What do you want to do today, love? Your choice.” Wooyoung spoke from the hallway, which caused you to turn to your left at the sound of his voice and your gaze eventually locks with his.
His hair was wet (telling you that he had just taken a shower) and he had changed into some real clothes. “Well…we really need to go grocery shopping, so we can make it into a little date if you want. I know it’s not the most ideal date…but I think it could be fun.” You trial off, gnawing on your bottom lip as your gaze lowers, almost feeling kind of guilty for not doing anything more special for a date. A slight frown tugs downward at Wooyoung’s lips as he stepped closer to you, before eventually crouching in front of you. He takes your hands in his “Baby…look at me.” He said softly, thumbs moving across your knuckles.
Of course, you listen to him and lift your head, gaze locking with his once more “I don’t care what we do for our dates…you could take me along to your doctor appointments and I’d still love it.” You couldn’t help but let out a light chuckle “Wooyoung, I’m serious.” You say a small forming on your lips and Wooyoung also found himself beginning to smile “And I’m serious as well. As long as I’m with you…nothing else matters.” He concluded, love and adoration filling his eyes as he looked at you…as if you had hung the stars in the sky.
You felt your face become warm at his words and intense gaze…even after three years of being together, Wooyoung still somehow made you feel so flustered at times. You let out a breathy chuckle “You’re such a charmer, aren’t you?” You question playfully, trying to cover up the fact that you were flustered in that moment.
A playful grin takes the place of the smile on his lips “Well…I would say that it is my greatest trait.” He answered, stealing a glance down toward your lips. You roll your eyes slightly “God…you’re insufferable.” You say through light laughter as you begin to take notice Wooyoung leaning closer to you.  “And yet you can’t help but love me anyway.”  And before you had the chance to respond, Wooyoung’s lips were on yours.
His lips move in a slow and delicate pace as his left hand traveled up to cradle your jaw, angling your head slightly so he had better access to your lips and not even a moment had passed when you responded with the same pace…as if it was second nature to do so. Your hands stayed on your lap, along with Wooyoung’s other hand that had naturally intertwined with one of yours. Your heart pounded erratically against your ribcage and your face was warm…Wooyoung never failed to make you feel like a flustered schoolgirl, kissing your crush for the first time.
“I love you, y/n.” He spoke pulling away slightly, before pressing his lips back on yours. You can’t help but breathe out soft sigh at the confession, lips responding to his once more “I love you too, Wooyoung.” You said between the kiss and at that you felt a smile tug upward at his lips, causing a fluttery feeling to fill the pit of your stomach.
The kiss only lasts a minute or two longer, before Wooyoung finally pulls away from your lips…even though he’d rather not and just kiss you for the rest of time. The smile remains painted on his features as he says, “I love you so much, sweetheart…like you have no idea how much I love you.” His forehead resting against yours and nose slightly bumping into yours. You chuckle softly, eyes fluttering shut as you basked in the feeling of having Wooyoung so close to you “I could say same thing about you.”  You said in response, causing him to also chuckle softly and with one final peck to your lips, Wooyoung fully pulls away and you instantly miss having him so close to you.
“Anyway…I might also have something we could do today.” He said, tucking a strand of your hair behind your ear, before that hand went back down yours. At that your curiosity is piqued “And what is that?” You asked him. He gives you a small smile, before replying with “Well, I was thinking we could go to the nearby park…and I test out my new camera, by taking photos of my favorite model.” You smile, almost bashfully, because you knew his favorite model was you “Okay…can we watch the sunset while we’re there?” He hums, while nodding, smile still etched on his features. “Of course we can, baby…anything for you.”
But what Wooyoung didn’t tell you, is that he’d take his camera to the grocery store as well. You’d push the cart and Wooyoung would be standing a bit behind you, occasionally snapping photos of you…and not once did you tell him to stop, because you knew how happy it made him taking photos of you and you couldn’t bear to ruin his happiness. But after all you were his muse and you had zero problems with that.
Tumblr media
After heading back to the apartment and putting the groceries in their respective spots, you and Wooyoung eventually find yourselves parked in an empty spot at the nearby park…but instead of immediately getting out as you normally would, Wooyoung had insisted he take photo of you, because you looked so beautiful and such beauty was meant to be photographed…his words not yours. “Okay…can I get out now?” You asked the moment you heard the shutter sound and saw the flash. Wooyoung laughs softly, lowering the camera from his face “Yes, you can get out now baby.”  He answered, at that you swing the door open and finally get out his car as you shut the door behind you.
Wooyoung stays behind in the car, a fond smile forming on his lips as his gaze stayed on your moving figure and not very long passes before you turn around (realizing Wooyoung was not beside you), your gaze immediately finding his. You smile, before mouthing the words “You coming?” Wooyoung nods in response as one single thought crossed his mind, one of how much he loved you.
You stay in the same spot on the walkway, waiting for Wooyoung to catch up to you as you enjoyed the cool fall breeze blowing past you, along with pretty hues of yellow and orange painting the sky. You’re so entranced by the beautiful scenery that you barely register a hand slipping into yours, only a soft voice saying your name was able to snap you out of your entranced state.
Your head turns to your left and your gaze locks with your boyfriends, slight worry paints his features “Are you okay, baby?” He asked softly “Yeah, I’m good…just enjoying the peacefulness and the beautiful scenery.” You reply and he nods “Okay, just making sure.” He says as the two of you began walking on the walkway.
“What are going to do with all of photos of me anyway?” You asked after a few moments of silence, while you turn to look at Wooyoung. A wide smile begins to take over his features “I’m going to make a photo album.” He says nonchalantly and that causes your eyes to widen slightly as warmth rushed to your face “Of just me?” You question, not quite believing him. Wooyoung hums in response “Just of you.” He confirmed and you still find it hard to believe.
“But…why?” You asked further and he thinks for a moment before answering “Well…for one, because I love you.” You feel your heart rate pick up “Two, because you are the most beautiful women, I’ve ever laid my eyes on.” A fluttery sensation invades your stomach, face becoming even warmer “And three, because when I’m old and wrinkly…and my memory isn’t as it used to be, I want to at least be able to remember who the love of life was.” You stop abruptly as tears begin to well up in your eyes and that causes Wooyoung to also come to a stop. A frown tugs downward at his lips, as both of his hand go up to cup either side of your face “Why are you crying, sweetheart?” He asked, gently wiping away your fallen tears with his thumbs.
You breathe in sharply “God…I love you so much, Wooyoung” His heart skips a few beats as a soft smile formed on lips “I love you too, baby.” He replied, before placing a gentle peck to your forehead and pulling you into his embrace; soft sobs leave from your lips as your arms wrap tightly around his waist. You both stand there until your sobs are nothing but soft sniffles, Wooyoung pulls back to look at you and another soft smile paints his features as he wipes away the residual tears from your skin.
“I’m so happy to have you my life, Woo.” You say before connecting your lips with his as the sun begins to sink below the horizon and the kiss shared between you promised future sunsets with Wooyoung.
Tumblr media
A/N: Finally after five days of writing, it’s finally here…my first fic on Tumblr. I do really hope you enjoyed reading Sunset with you, just as much as I enjoyed writing it💗

Smile Hoya
“Smile Hoya” was one of Jung Hoseok’s stage names. He once became a street performer and was called after a plant due to his bright energy. During his pre-debut days, Jung Hoseok was already known for being such a great performer. He has the charisma that always makes his audience love him so much. In fact, there are no other artists like him!
One of Hoseok’s trademarks was his heart-shaped smile. Whenever he’s off stage, he always radiates positivity within his group members, as well as the ARMYs. His smile is what I am living for. Every morning, I would look at my phone and see his beautiful smile on my lockscreen. You can put ten pictures in front of me, showing only the smiles of 10 different people—and witness how I can easily identify which one was his. His heart-shaped smile helped me go through tough times. Hoseok was one of those whom I genuinely love and support. He’s a sincere person who wants nothing but peace. God must have favoritism, and Hoseok was one of those. He created such a beautiful soul inside a beautiful human body.
His smile was something I can’t live without. Just by the thought of it, I feel like I can’t experience another sunshine in my life. He truly lives up to his name “Smile Hoya” for a reason. I hope he’s aware how much his smile brightens up my life. There is no reason for me to give up his smile over anything else. There are 7 billion smiles in the world; only a few are genuine. And yet, I still chose his.

⌗ . . . domestic moments with jaehyun !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
❛ not requested ❜ jung jaehyun × fem!reader, fluff, <1k
Tumblr media
❏ waking up next to jaehyun, and he’s already going off with those cheesy pick-up lines in the morning. “every morning’s a good morning if i wake up next to you,” his eyes crinkle at the edges and the dimples make their appearance on either of the corners his mouth.
❏ letting you walk on the safer side of the road while he walks beside you, with your arm linked with his.
❏ having romantic dinner dates. “would you like to dance with me, m’lady,” he asks, smiling from ear to ear as he puts his hand forward, waiting for your response. a soft chuckle escapes your lips because this little gesture of his. “of course,” you said, accepting his offer as you did a little bow, this time making jaehyun chuckle.
❏ having matching lockscreens. there was this one picture that you guys had taken where jaehyun’s seen smiling while you kiss his dimple. so jaehyun has one half of the picture (you) and you have the other half (jaehyun) as your lockscreen.
❏ looking at each other’s pictures as kids. “god, jae! you were so cute back then,” you laughed, looking at the polaroid of a cute little boy playing in the pool. jaehyun’s cheeks were flushed, and a sheepish smile adorned his lips. facing him, you looked at the photo and then back at him, “well, you’re still a tiny precious child,” that statement managing to make jaehyun even more flushed than he already was.
❏ him doing your make-up. “and this is the...” jaehyun pauses for a second, turning the thin pencil-like thing and reading what’s written on it. “— the eyebrow pencil,” you completed his sentence, snickering at this scene. jaehyun tried his best to act all cool about it, “yeah, i totally knew that. i was just checking if YOU knew that,” he blabbered, slowly leaning in closer to you in an attempt to do your eyebrows.
❏ cooking together. the way jung jaehyun can make a task as ordinary as cooking romantic. when he notices that you’re not able to tie your apron, he makes his way towards you, helping you tie it without uttering a word till he’s done. “shall we get to cooking then, love?”
❏ him tying your hair/you drying his hair. “that definitely isn’t it,” you chuckled as you felt his fingers in your hair, trying to tie a high ponytail, but failing miserably. “it doesn’t look that bad!” jaehyun retorted, tying the last knot of the hair-tie. “alright, A++ for efforts then!”
❏ even the shortest text from one puts a smile on the other’s face. be it a small “have a good day!” or a short “ily,” it always has the other smiling.
you: didn’t get to say bye to you today since you left early :((
you: have a great day <333
you: i love you ig 🧍‍♂️
a small smile makes its way up to jaehyun’s lips, with the dimples showing as jaehyun softly says to himself, “i love you too, my love.”
jung jaehyun never knew what love felt like. but all that changed ever since you came into his life.

“Same place then?”
The other side of the line muffles with a rustle, his voice following moments later. “Yeah, same place.” You nod, shuffling across the room to settle your own erratic heartbeat down. One ‘see you’ and an echo later, the line goes dead.
Of course it’s the same place, you wonder if he remembers it’s the same time of the year too. It’s June again, the festivities have just begun. Party streamers hung like clotheslines over city streets, crisscrossing from building to building in webs of bright color. People were everywhere; in the shops, on the road, brushing or pushing past you. Music blasted from enormous speakers, a different tune on every other street corner, and the cacophony of noises boils down into one singular buzz in your ear. You always hated the summer festival, it’s always too hot and too crowded. Only one person managed to drag you out and after so many years, he’s done it again.
The call details don’t disappear when you blink, his name in white ink engraved across the glass screen above a timer counting the seconds of shared breathing. You’re both waiting for the other to end the call, a habit from a shared past reverberating in the present. Seconds tick by one by one with no one uttering a word until finally his laugh comes, high and light through the speakers. “See you later,” he repeats. And the call ends before you could say the same thing back like you always did until you grew tired of each other. The timer stops, the caller ID disappears. The blank lockscreen stares at you from below then the screen shuts to black.
Jung Wooyoung hasn’t called you in years.
The first pang of nostalgia hits when the wall comes to view, its reddish brown bricks almost black with the fading sunlight. You’re still half a block away but the wind carries their laughter over. Engines chug, carts rattle, children giggle. The carnival takes shape behind closed eyelids, rides towering over one another and littered all around the block. There are countless shops in between, prizes ranging from snacks to stuffed toys. You once tried out each one, walked out without a single coin to your name. Your pulse picks up as you get closer, nostalgia washed out by nervousness and excitement.
The line heading in is no longer as long as it used to be, ticket staff replaced by a singular robot. It spits out a ticket, stamps your outstretched hand, and pushes you in.
You’re fifteen again, watching as cotton candy flies out of the machine and into your hand — matching hues with the pink clouds as if it had been plucked right out of there. Before you manage to say your thanks you’re swept into the crowd, a centrifugal force dragging you out of your comfort zone. The ocean of curious park-goers swallows you, your only tether to the shore is a hand wrapped around your forearm. Wooyoung swims from one stall to another, his voice muffled beneath the noise of the amusement park.
He’s but a blur in the crowd, buzzing from one shop to another with ‘Free Taste!’ treats as his pollen. That night he dunks a stranger into a tank, knocks a pyramid of plastic cups down with a toy gun, and loses all his money in petty gamble.
You glance at your phone when it chimes, vibrating in your hand as it ushers a message in. I’m here. Where are you? Your last message turns from delivered to seen as his message comes in. In line. Heading in.
Maybe it was impatience or eagerness that made the wait longer. You round back to the entrance, the flashing spectacle impossible to miss amidst the bright lights of the park. The queue moves and people flurry in but Wooyoung isn’t one of them.
At a distance, steam is blown and an engine roars to life. The pirate ship begins to swing and you’re sixteen again, trying to talk Wooyoung out of it. But your tickets have been paid and you were two people away from getting in. There’s a bright glint bouncing off his glossy eyes, the thrill of thinking of the ride already exhilarating for him. When you try to back away, his grip tightens. Before you know it, you’re buckled into the last row.
“It will be fun,” he said. That’s before the boat swings too far back and your body hovers off the seat. Every profanity you know rapid-fires out of your mouth, echoing Wooyoung’s own screaming before he hears you and starts laughing instead. You walk off the ride feeling weightless, one tick off your bucket list and one ear still ringing from your seatmate’s screaming.
He doesn’t apologize, he doesn’t know how to articulate the word out loud. But he drags you to a ride you’ve been eyeing, one he rendered a waste of money earlier that night. It’s a light ride wedged between all the heart-stopping ones, a handshake to your fearful self. Bumper cars and you’re the first and only people in line. The five minute interval between rides passes with no other people queueing up besides a few kids too short to be let in.
Payback comes in the form of getting a better car, driving school doing no good with the dysfunctional controls. It’s a chase when he realizes it, because you’re on his tail as he drives from one corner to another. The world mutes and for a few minutes, it’s just you and him clashing bumpers and exchanging taunts between laughter. The memory remains fresh even after all those years, encapsulated in a snowglobe and untouched by everything that followed.
“What are you looking at?”
You’re twenty-three now, reeled back from a trip down memory lane by a voice that breaks through your thoughts. You blink away from the swinging pirate ship, the amusement park’s noise muting into a quiet hum when you turn to the person standing in front of you.
He isn’t looking, his eyes fixated on the ride with the same glint as they did all those years ago. “Wooyoung.”
“He-llo.” The years vanish like bubbles blown in the wind because you look up and nothing has changed. He’s already breaking into a laugh, his eyes disappearing and their corners crinkling. You graduated this year and it’s been a while since you’ve last seen each other, the summer tradition kept alive with him home. “Did I keep you waiting for long?”
The answer is simple but the words are nowhere, lost and buried beneath other things waiting to be said. “No,” you say, shaking your head. “Not that long.”
“Great,” he beams and you wonder if he has anything else to say but he remains quiet, no longer rambling on like he used to. “You have what I asked for?”
There is a sense of urgency when his voice seeps in through the phone speakers and into your ears, like he isn’t calling to catch up but to get one task off his things to do. It’s an idol thing, you’re assuming, always having a time set for anything and everything because there’s always somewhere else to be at all the time. But right now, he’s here, on the other side of the line.
“I was calling to ask if you still have my things?” he asks, tone hiking and uncertain.
You turn your heel, eyeing an untouched corner of your bedroom. A box sits collecting dust, safeguarding four years worth of memories in its carton walls. “Yup, came across them while cleaning actually.”
“Can I pick them up?”
“You’re home?” The surprise bleeds into your voice, the distance between Iksan and Seoul blurring in a single moment. He’s home, breathing the same air in the same city for the first time in so long.
Wooyoung shuffles on the other end of the line. “Yeah. Our company gave us a break.”
The tide wanes and the line between your worlds comes clear. Company, because he’s no longer just your classmate. There are people beyond this small town who know him now, his name chanted by millions or more. “I can’t have an idol dropping by my house. I don’t want any speculation.”
He laughs, the Wooyoung from all those years ago showing himself when you feel the need to distance your ear from the speaker. “I doubt anyone followed me here though. So where can we meet?”
“Well, it’s June again and you’re home.”
His end of the line is quiet, static, and you worry that you’ve finally taken up too much. But he gleams, “Summer festival! The park!” The same place, the bright red wooden bench sitting in the middle of the block of whirring metal chunks.
Dust flurries about your bedroom when you nudge the box out of its corner. It’s half full of things that aren’t yours, trinkets from your past from friends and classmates you barely talk to anymore. Most of them are Wooyoung’s and they’ve been untouched for years.
Some days, your eyes would brush past his drawer on your cabinet — a shelf full of the little things he leaves behind during his visits. There are shirts and sweaters, fidget spinners and rubik’s cubes, little things and little memories trapped in that enclosure.  You’ve only gone through his things to arrange them, fold and unfold them as memories from younger years resurface as you go through his things. Sometimes Wooyoung is dancing around with his footfalls muffled by the rug, other times he’s sprawled out on the bedroom floor staring at the empty ceiling. He moves to the capital after high school graduation and his things become more of a waste of space rather than fond memorabilia, demoted from your cabinet and moved into a box in the corner.
But emptying the box is easier said than done. A slideshow of memories pan as you fold and unfold each item for what could be the last time. Your hands clutch onto the fabric longer, fingers tinkering with the same things for minutes on end and refusing to let go. They’re the last of him still in your hold, still tangible when he isn't.
“_____, my things?” Again, his voice is urgent.
Wooyoung’s eyes are no longer glued to the rides but following a clump of people walking down the path to other rides, people you don’t recognize and people he doesn’t bother to introduce. One waves him over and he raises a hand to wait up. They glance through narrowed eyes, their silent judgment washing over — suffocating you.
Your cheeks heat with embarrassment, no one at fault for the situation but your assumptions and crushed expectations. He didn’t really say anything about reliving old traditions, no, he just said he needed his things back and nothing more. This wasn’t him making up for lost time after years of being away. It’s him wedging you in between an already filled schedule, one where you were never fit to be in the first place. But you couldn’t help but hope, could you? It’s the same place, the same festival, the same season, just different years. Just too many Junes apart, familiarity long gone.
“Here.”
The pack leaves your lap, its weight shifting to your arm then to its recipient until you’re no longer holding any of it — any of him. You’re standing a foot apart from each other, close enough for you to catch a quiff of musky perfume, and there’s still too much distance in between. Because you’re no longer teenagers holding back laughs in the back row, no longer running the same halls and making fun of the same teachers. There’s no shared struggle to pass impossible exams and no common people to talk about anymore.
“Did you come with someone?”
You shake your head, honesty overruling your need to make some excuse to say. “Just me.”
“Maybe you want to join us?” Wooyoung asks, but he’s looking far as if planning where to put you in his schedule while your own only had him in mind.
So you save yourself from the embarrassment because you know he isn’t asking out of genuine interest to let you stay but common courtesy. You recognize it, that tone, because he uses it on others when he wants to spend time alone with you.
“It’s fine,” you reassure him. “I have somewhere else to go anyway.” The town was wide and there were other places to go, just not where you wanted to be with for the night. Your night reshuffles in your head, alternatives for the amusement park coming up in charades because anywhere was better than being in a crowd you didn’t belong in.
You stand up and Wooyoung steps back.
“Okay.”
When you catch his eye, he’s looking back but the glint is no longer there. It’s still Wooyoung, just taller and more muscular. His hair seems darker, box-dyed instead of its natural darkness. He carries himself better, standing with more confidence that he’s almost unrecognizable when he’s on stages. But tonight he blends with the rides and the city lights.
He doesn’t know where to place his hands, they hang awkwardly beside him. There must be an urge to reach out to put your head, to open up and give a hug because your own are itching to close the distance in between. There’s too much to say, too much time to fill in but your words fail and the reunion is sealed with a hi-five.
“It was nice seeing you.” He says but he’s already mixing with the crowd before you say it back and before long, he disappears.
It doesn’t hurt as much as you expect it to. The real tether is long worn out, time and distance thinning the ropes that bind. The blades have long been drawn, gnawing on the line with 9-5s. He’s training for the same hours you’re in class and you’re both catching sleep in between. Same time zones feel different with mismatched schedules. Messages were left unreplied for days, then weeks, then months, until all you ever messaged each other for were New Years and birthdays. Even those stopped coming too. One day, his birthday was just November Twenty-something and when the date comes you remember a birthday but not the person it belongs to.
This was just the final severance, the mere acceptance of a reality long drawn out. Your worlds have long fallen apart, no longer revolving one another. You were pendulums in reverse; once in sync, now swinging past one another. Your clocks now ticked on different beats of the same second, common ground split into two different things long ago.
The amusement park disappears behind you as you walk away into the night, going about your night without Wooyoung just like you’ve gotten used to all those Junes without him. Loss is sad but it happens. You’ve lost him long ago and you can’t miss what you didn’t care to keep around. So you let the blade cut through, threads of lingering attachments lost to the void. You’re each other’s stepping stones, significant parts of the past that helped mold the present and you convince yourself there’s nothing lonely about being left when you’ve done well on your own even without him. He’s a piece of your past, a fond memory to look back on, and he’s still a part of your life even when he doesn’t walk with you in the present anymore.
