I'm gonna use this ask to delve into a specific aspect of what I mentioned in the previous ask, because I think that this is something you need to know when interacting with me. Bullies or bullying supporters are NOT welcome in my space.

CRITICALLY exploring & enjoying "problematic" SHIPS doesn't make you a bad person / psycho / pervert / whatev they wanna call it.

Almost anyone who's had a fandom experience, no matter how brief, has run into this topic. The whole big war "antis vs pro-shippers"...even if personally I'd call it the endless "in this episode of how antis start another witch hunt against people who just want to stay in their corner and do their thing..." series.

Btw, to be precise, "pro-shipper" doesn't mean only what everyone seems to think. At the very start, the term was used for people who apply the very healthy, very mature philosophy of the "Ship and let ship", variation of that "live and let live" so many people (even antis, and damn, hello, hypocrisy) loves to throw out to justify their not so popular behaviour.

So, "pro-shipper" isn't a bad word. Actually, it means that you're acting like the adult you're supposed to be. And this means that if you follow what I wrote up there, then technically, you are a pro-shipper.

Gonna leave that there, for pondering purposes. For the rest of the ask, I'm gonna use the term with the most common meaning that's used online nowadays. Back on track.

Are these ships "problematic"? According to our social standards, yes. That's undeniable and no one denies it, not even the shippers (mind, I'm talking about people who critically consume this kind of content, the actual pervs are NOT considered here). They know and have the common sense to explore their ship never losing sight of the fact that 1. it's fiction and 2. this doesn't equal supporting those things IRL. Because yeah, I'll say it (unpopular opinion inside the unpopular opinion):

Fiction does NOT equal reality.

Being intellectually curious about something doesn't equal doing it or even just wanting to do it. Most people fantasise about killing one or more people during their life (and this is a scientifical fact, there are studies on this shit), and this fantasies are pretty enjoyable too for most of them. Would you call them murders? Just because they have explored a scenario without having intention of reproducing it in reality?

I don't think so.

And the same goes for anyone who is interested in the theory and the psychology of "problematic" ships (and content in general). Toxic relationships, abusive relationships, underage, big age differences, incest, power imbalance...and there's more than I can't recall right now, but you got the gist. All this stuff is bad IRL, no one can argue with that (and if they do, then they need to get professional help or go to jail). But on a fantastical level, with fictional characters? It's not different from enjoying a horror movie or being fascinated by a fictional serial killer. Which doesn't mean wanting to become the next John Kramer (Saw) or Michael Myers (Halloween) or being an actual groupie.

So let's put things into the right context before starting to throw around real heavy words, shall we?

Then, on the other hand, as I've already said, we have the ones who bully real people, who accuse real people of being really disgusting thing, who tell real people to kill themselves. People who write on their fucking blog descriptions, for everyone to see, stuff like "pro-shippers killed on sight / if you ship X go hang yourself / if you like Y I hope you OD", etc. I'm not making these up, btw, I've actually seen this shit.

I won't add anything else about this last point because I have already stated what I think and, especially, it should be really fucking obvious. And if it's not to you...whelp, maybe you need to go out and touch some grass. Just saying.

You're allowed not to like this stuff. You're allowed to be uncomfortable about. You have all the rights not to want to see it. You're allowed to avoid / block the people who engage in it. This is all valid.

You're not allowed to be a fucking cowardly bully who uses the anonymity of the internet offers to be an asshole and a criminal. What is pro-shipping? I've seen it be used in different context and so I'm just SOOOO confused. People use it for dark content or just people they like that's fucked up.

okok to my knowledge it means exactly what it says: you're pro characters being shipped. BUT, I've seen it used as 'you particularly favor controversial/taboo/illegal ships', meaning incest, bestiality, grooming, etc. this is a quote i found while making sure i had the right definition, "So basically, pro-ship can mean anything from "I don't really care what you ship" to "I love controversial ships"."

From my brief research, I think that it's ended up meaning: every ship is okay, whether morally wrong or not, which is a very easy gateway for pedophilia and other shipping disasters.

To be honest with you, i'm not 100% sure myself. I've gathered that it's become a bad thing, because i've seen people say stuff like 'pro-shippers dni' or something along those lines, but i really can't nail down a definition, that's just what i've gathered. please, if anyone knows, tell me!

No no not mad at you sorry 😅 just frustrated in general. Because it has been happening since 7.4. Just the other day I went into the Ryan tag and the first thing there was a gif of Buck and Tommy Kissing. Eddie Diaz is being tagged in posts about how soft and great Tommy is with Buck. Buddie tag here and ao3 is being flooded with posts about Tommy. I saw one yesterday tagged Buddie and it was how the poster hoped they would get to see a ton of scenes with Buck Chris and Tommy, eddie not included. I told someone else this the other day that was confused why more and more people seem to be “snapping” at Buck Tommy Shippers, it’s because tagging exists for a reason. And we are all thrilled for canon bi Buck being confirmed finallyyyyy after all these years. But not everyone is a multi shipper. Which is fine. And not everyone is a solo shipper. Which is also fine. And the first few days after 7.4, a few incorrect tagging posts not a big deal. But here we are two weeks later and it’s still happening. ao3 stories are being labeled as Evan Buckley/ Eddie Diaz and then they are buck Tommy stories. They are being labeled buddie and pre relationship and then nothing even hints at romantic about buddie in the stories. It just focuses on Buck and Tommy. Here on tumblr the Buddie tag is getting influxed with I ship Buddie still BUT and then it’s an essay on why Tommy is so great and why everyone should think so to and if they don’t your suddenly phobic posts. Or posts about how people need to stop making bi Buck about Eddie while they then in turn make it all about Tommy 💀. Neither post however is actually about Buddie. So the growing frustration is coming from now even the people who are completely neutral about the Tommy of it all and still waiting for Buddie and just trying to enjoy the ride, now suddenly can’t seem to curate their experience because people won’t tag correctly. Every tag it’s becoming essentially shoved down people’s throats of how great Tommy is. And isn’t Tommy the best. And Tommy and Buck are so great and so in love and it’s the best thing ever. Like they had 1 bad date, and 1 kiss. Which again for the die hard Buck and Tommy shippers more power to ya. I am genuinely happy you get to experience this. But for the people neutral on this specific relationship or just not vibing with Tommy in general, trying to go into the buddie tag, or the Eddie Diaz tag, or the Ryan tag every day for two weeks and not seeing those tag related posts anymore and instead seeing Tommy Tommy Tommy I’m sure you can see where the frustration comes from and why it building and more and more arguments are breaking out. Buck and Tommy have to my knowledge their own tags and I don’t know if buddie shippers are going into them and doing the same thing there in which case my point stands for them as well to stop doing that and tag correctly. If you're so bothered by a cartoon ship (which... no words) still don't understand why you take it out on shippers, not like you could do much about the studio anyway, they don't care, as they should, but then being on our ass is entirely pointless... maybe that's the problem at the same time, maybe to some extent you do realise no one cares so you've decided persecuting a bunch of fan creators and consumers would be the next best thing. That said I feel it's imperative to point out, we're not Sunrise, we're not the ones with the power to shape this story, so you bullying us is frankly just devoid of any meaning other than raw intent for violence. At the very least admit that and drop the pretences, it's the only thing you've done after all, one would have to be blind not to see it.

If you're afraid a puny ship might be canon, and whatever you've twisted it to mean for you, take it up with the studio, alternatively with god since you're so into fictive characters over real life. The first thing that confuses me: that I’m apparently “taking it out on shippers”, “ persecuting”, and “bullying” them? Please show me your receipts. I’ve literally never directly initiated contact with a sessrin blog. Hell, the one time I considered answering a post made by a pro blog, it was going to be in direct response to a question they posed in the anti tag, directed towards antis, and it turns out I couldn’t even answer the post because the user had most of the anti community blocked. (Silly, I know, but this is what we’ve been dealing with so what can I say.) Any time I want to respond to a sessrin argument that wasn’t directed to me anyways, I would usually screenshot it and blackout the names.

I can count on one hand the times I’ve even posted in the same thread as pro sessrin blogs, and in those cases, I either A) didn’t directly call out the other blog/blogs that were posting in the same thread as me, or @ them, or B) was only even interacting in said post because pro shippers were piling on and harassing people in the thread, and I was simply pointing out that there were shippers in said thread acting fools. The only time I ever even pointed out a particular blog I did it via screenshot and did it to keep a record of a blog that was admitting to flagging our posts as spam.

Anyways, regardless of the fact that I’m pretty sure you sent this to the wrong person, I guess I can render a response to the base question you seem to be asking here: Why argue with shippers?

Really, at the end of the day, I’m not arguing with your average shipper. Hell, there are a few blogs I even follow and interact with that have said they like sessrin content, but they understand this is not an appropriate thing for a kid's show. And I can respect that because I’ve been in the problematic ship boat in other fandoms. (Here’s a hint, in one of the fandoms that I followed content for a problematic ship in, a content creator was given cookies with sewing needles baked into them, yikes right?!)

The main message of mine and many other blogs I follow is that this ship isn’t appropriate for children’s media, and what happens is a lot of salty people come out of the woodwork who feel the need to argue and say there is nothing wrong with it, which causes us to have to list the reasons why there is indeed something wrong with it (thus why it shouldn't be in said children’s media), then what happens is people like you come at us and act like all we’ve been doing is bullying shippers, and “why don’t you just let us ship in peace!?!?!?!!!??”

In fact, I shouldn’t even be surprised that I got this ask eventually, because as I’ve pointed out in the past, the shipper argument seems to be a cyclical one.

A blogger will make a statement something along the lines that they really don’t care if people ship sessrin, but the shippers really shouldn’t be making a lot of noise to the studio that they want to see this ship in the show because kids watch it, and it’s not a great message to send to kids.

A shipper will then message the blog (usually anonymously if possible) something along the lines of you’re wrong about the ship sending a bad message to kids because of xyz, or it’s a totally normal and healthy relationship, and you’re wrong, or Yashahime isn’t for kids, etc.

The Blogger will then respond with actual evidence, a well-worded response, or even just fucking common sense (like come on, some of the mental gymnastics I’ve seen people employ to try to validate this fucking ship to us is hilarious).

The blogger will then get another message something along the lines of  “why don’t you just let us ship in peace!?!?!?!!!??”

The blogger responds with JESUS CHRIST I SAID FROM THE VERY START THAT I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU SHIP I JUST DON’T WANT TO SEE IT IN A GODDAMN KIDS CARTOON”

At which point the whole process is rinsed and repeated. Congratulations you’ve just witnessed a new grey hair grow out of my fucking scalp.

However, there is a new facet to this shit gem that I’ve noticed during this whole annoying cycle, and that is the fact that a lot of pro shippers are making claims that they are being harassed by anti blogs, but I’m not seeing a lot of proof of this. And make no mistake, if I see an established anti blog being terrible, or making a false claim, I have no problem calling them out, or correcting false information. Please, feel free to screenshot proof and post it in the anti tag, and see how many other blogs won't put up with this either.

And to be clear, I don’t really count anonymous asks as harassment, because people can be sending that shit to themselves. Just like I don’t mind asks I get like this one because I naively respond to them in the hopes that maybe someone will actually understand what the argument has been about this whole time. They advocate for incestual and pedophilic relationships. Anti's don't have a problem with normal healthy ships, it's only when it's something fucked up that it becomes an issue. I have two friends who are victims of CSA, one of whom was groomed by a fan artist of an obscure cartoon and drew nsfw shipping art of two minors. So this shit matters to me a lot. Why do you think Sunrise did that event in with Sesshomaru and Rin's VAs mirroring InuKag? They have already done that CD Drama, do you think they did that to give hope to the shippers? What if after so many hints, if they reveal in the anime that Sessrin isn't canon, aren't the shippers gonna be disapointed? I'm not gonna lie, I'm up and down about how I feel about that livestream and what it means for the future of this ship. My brain has been on roller coaster mode since basically the moment the sequel was announced. We're in the home stretch now, and we better get the answers WE WANT the second that sequel comes out. Since it's evidently not going to happen anytime sooner- welp!

Before the livestream aired, I really thought us fans were on the verge of discovering the mom and that it was going to be Rin. We still had hope she wasn't, but at the same time most of us antis were "bracing for impact." lol

Then nothing happened.

We were pretty shocked but obviously relieved. The days before it came out, I was telling others (as well as myself lol) that just because Sesshomaru and Rin's VAs had a livestream together doesn't confirm anything. Besides, why does that have to automatically mean that both pairings need to be romantic? We all know how integral these characters are/were to each other's storylines, so these pairings make the most logical sense, wouldn't you say?

In the previous livestream with the voice actors who play Inuyasha and Kagome, they discuss the new character Moroha and introduce her as Inuyasha AND Kagome's daughter. Now let's compare that to the other livestream with Sesshomaru and Rin's VAs. When they described Towa and Setsuna, they did so as Sesshomaru's daughters NOT Sesshomaru and Rin's daughters. That to me is the most telling piece of evidence.

Like how could they not use that prime opportunity to tell us Rin's the mom when her voice actor was literally sitting right there??! We were all expecting it and they still insisted on giving us nothing! What this tells me is that it's possible this mom is a new character, and it even appears she is quite pivotal to the new series. I keep changing my opinion on that part though to be honest with you, because sometimes I think she won't be important at all in the grand scheme of things. (See what I mean about being up and down? lol) Idk about you, but it seems to me like we haven't even met her character. If it was Rin, why keep it a mystery? It's not like Sessrin's popularity is exactly a secret in this fandom. Why wait until the big reveal if it's "so obvious" in the first place? How does Sunrise benefit from hiding this information?

If it does end up being Rin, it would've been better to just come out and say it. If this ain't just pure fanbait like some of us still hope it is, why hold back? Give 'em what they want already and let us antis be at peace. If they hope to think that I'll change my mind and give this sequel a go just because I've waited this long so might as well, they're sorely mistaken. If anything, I'm going to be pissed they kept us in the dark this long when they could've just saved us all the trouble. I imagine that goes for a lot of us, shippers and antis alike. Whatever way you look at it, I won't be invested in this sequel if Sessrin goes canon- period. I cannot and will not be on board with a series that promotes such a harmful and insulting dynamic.

Which brings us to Sunrise's marketing strategy. Well, I definitely think they have been catering to the fans of this ship for quite some time now. Because, ya know, money. Whether that's because they plan to make this ship canon or not remains to be seen. "Show meee the moneeeeyyyy!" *yells in Jerry Maguire*

There was first the drama cd and more recently that calendar which included art of adult!Rin with Sesshomaru, but neither of those are canon first off. Also, does anyone know if it was actually confirmed to be pro-Sessrin fan art? I mean, I know it doesn't look very good when the artist who made it is a Sessrin shipper and certain fans are fawning over their OTP, but that doesn't necessarily mean the calender automatically is either last I checked. I wonder why it can't simply be Rin as an adult visiting with Sesshomaru. I believe in one picture she's seen giving him a flower, much like little Rin would've done, or just as any child does for a loved one. So if Rin is still bringing him flowers as an adult, I would assume that means their relationship dynamic hasn't changed at all. That's what's supposed to happen, too! If an adult's relationship was established with another person while they were just a child, then that adult will always view them as a child no matter what and vice versa. Even when those children become grown-ups, that won't change. That's just how things are, or how they're supposed to be rather. In other words, a normal healthy adult-child bond does not resemble one like Sessrin.

Both Sessrin fans and antis agree there haven't been any romantic implications between Sesshomaru and Rin in the original series. That's why I can't understand for the life of me why we're even having this discussion. Alas, here we are. This is what happens when society has conditioned us to believe that the only proper (aka "best") way an adult male and a young female's closeness can evolve is with romance. So maybe it's not obvious at first (because that would be illegal), but we should EXPECT their relationship to shift in that direction. Why, you ask? Well, simply because sexualizing young girls is the norm so why not, right? No clues or foreshadowing required! Because like I just said, that would be illegal. Fiction has loopholes for this kinda stuff, so problem solved?

Nope! Aging her up counts too, folks! When you look at a girl character and the first thing you think is, "I can't wait till she grows up so she can f*ck" then, yeah, you're a part of the problem. You may not realize it, but you are. That's not to say you're a bad person or that it's even your fault, just saying that there are times in all of our lives where we start to question some of our beliefs. If you not only support but desire the idea of a romance eventually forming between a grown man- yes, 19 is an adult- and a young girl, then you should probably ask yourself why that may be and re-evaluate. Please stop using cultural differences and history that dates back almost a thousand years to justify this so-called tradition.

If Sunrise and Rumiko do decide to go through with this, then I will disappointed, sure, but not surprised. Romanticizing these sexualized images of young or pre-pubescent girls has been happening for far too long, after all. We've become desensitized to it sadly enough, especially when the media continues to glorify it. I wish we'd realize how many young girls- or minors in general- we're putting in danger by sending messages such as this.

To you young teenage girls and even boys reading this, you may not fully understand right now, but it's never okay for anyone to tell you that your body being sexualized is a natural and beautiful thing. It's going through through a lot changes at your age, yes, but they should never use your curiosity to satisfy their sexual needs. Don't allow some of these stories to be an example of what is acceptable to occur in your own life if you were ever to encounter a similar situation, especially if fiction is all that you have to compare it to. It is not in any way, shape, or form okay for an adult to say or do sexual/romantic things to you. Even a conversation that may seem harmless at first could have dire consequences. No, not even if you trust them and they're one of your favorite people in this world are these things ever appropriate. What they're asking from you or showing you is dangerous, and even if it doesn't seem like it they are very likely taking advantage of you. If you're ever unsure about something, don't hesitate to come to me. Or maybe you have a loved one that you can go to, that works too. 😊

Re: pro-shipping and stuff

Obviously there are weirdos and gross people in every group... But I do think with pro-shippers in general we can get used to being defensive and can become overly defensive sometimes.

I'm a CSA survivor and I find loli/shota extremely triggering. But I don't think it should be illegal because I haven't seen any evidence that it causes real world harm (other than being very upsetting) and I don't think that's enough of a reason to make something illegal. I also find it extremely insulting when people say it's just as bad as CP/CSEM because that comes across as ignoring the fact that CP/CSEM directly hurts children.

I've gotten death threats and been called a pedophile (again despite being a survivor) just for saying that last part. That there is a meaningful difference between the suffering and abuse of real children and fictional ones.

There's also a real problem with anti-shippers just using dogwhistles and dishonest wording all the time. Which can make it very difficult to tell what someone really means. Like, if someone I follow says they think loli is gross are they really saying they find it gross and/or triggering? Or are they saying they think it's okay to send someone death threats for having a ship they don't like? Because sometimes that's what it means.

And the whole "csa survivors use it to cope" argument is kinda... Meh... In my opinion... It's really just the only argument that can appeal to people's emotions. It's a lot more complicated to actually talk about the problems and dangers with censoring media, even if it is completely morally abhorrent.

I think a lot of people really don't understand that pro-ship stuff is about way more than underage ships, I know a lot of pro-shippers and none of them are even into that. It's mostly just about supporting the existence of dark fiction, even if we aren't into it. And also understanding that people's fantasies don't completely line up with their real desires most of the time.

Sorry if this is unfocused. I just find the whole conversation frustrating because a lot of people buy into the very dishonest things anti-shippers say. There are so many types of media that I avoid at all costs because it makes me physically ill. Being pro-ship isn't about wanting to see all of that stuff, it's just believing it shouldn't be censored and that people shouldn't get harassed over it.

Like I am never someone who wants to harass anybody and I agree with you that I do not think fictional things for example is the exact same as real child porn or real child sexual abuse. I do, however, also understand why people find it upsetting and get triggered by it, as someone who finds even the idea of it extremely uncomfortable myself, and I can understand why people that do get upset at the content creators who do post and engage with that stuff. 

But I for one quite simply just...do not engage with those people or those posts. And like on Archive for example, there is a warning and filter system that can help you avoid content you don’t want to see.

I’ve learned that I’m not likely to change somebody’s view on something by harassing them about it. So what’s the point? I’m not going to go and upset myself by engaging with that person and their content any more than I already have, I’m just going to block them. 

And in the majority of places, what they’re doing often doesn’t even count as illegal - IDK about drawings but there are books with written underage sex in them for example, including paedophilia such as in Lolita - which doesn’t mean anyone has to think it’s morally right but, in reality, there isn’t an awful lot you can do about it if the site itself is not going to censor it.

You know, I liked every ship destiel fan hated: Meg/Castiel, Sam/Jessica, Castiel/Hannah (both vessel), Dean/Cassie, Sam/Eileen, Castiel/Kelly, Castiel/Ishim (don't ask me why), Castiel/Sam...

And for those who have stuck with me since I first started becoming active in the SPN fandom, I'm sure you all remember there was once a time when I did in fact ship Destiel. But looking back to that time, I realized that Destiel was never like THE otp for me. At one point I thought it was, but I think that had a lot to do with how I had originally entered the fandom. Let me take you back to the day about three years ago or so, I was just a newbie to this tumblring thing, I'd had my blog for about a year or so and it was mainly just reviewing Shadowhunters (and I'm sure some of you remember how not impressed I was with that show) and I decided I really needed something a little more positive in my blog. Being critical is fun and all but there comes a point where you're just exhausted from it and I was also afraid that maybe I was becoming a little too jaded. So I thought it would be fun to talk about SPN on my blog as it's a show I've been keeping up with over the years and I greatly enjoy it. But the SPN fandom is honestly so huge and when you're first entering it, it's kind of overwhelming. I really had no idea where to begin. So I just thought I would stick to what I know and type in Castiel (my favorite SPN character) and see where that took me in the fandom. I found a lot of great meta postings from the more mainstream meta writers in the community and I thought it was really good so I followed them. Now, these blogs were not only heavy on pro-Cas but also heavy on Destiel. And before going into the fandom, I knew Destiel was a thing. I'd never really shipped them before this but a lot of the meta I was reading about Destiel on these pro-Cas blogs I thought was real interesting and as I started to get braver in the fandom, making my own posts, I kind of just started shipping Destiel because I felt like that's what I needed to do in order to be accepted by this community despite the fact that I'd never had particularly strong feelings about Destiel before. So I wanted to be accepted so badly that I just shipped it because hey, it's what everyone else was doing, yay peer pressure, right? But then, as I spent more time in this particular community, I began to see the darker side of the community. The community disparaging anyone who doesn't ship Destiel or hell, doesn't ship Destiel exactly the way they do and it just left a really bad taste for me and I didn't like it (I really don't like seeing people being attacked for their opinions or being treated like they're stupid or blind in their interpretations of the show). My first foray into the SPN fandom, and I probably came upon one of the more judgemental factions of the fandom. So I made a few posts about my feelings on that, I got blocked by a good portion of the meta writers within the community (even though I never referred to any of them by name, I was super vague because I didn't really want drama, but they sure knew who I was talking about, even though it still boggles my mind that they even cared what a nobody like me was even saying about their behavior). So I realized that that faction of the community wasn't for me and I started kind of just diving into multiple factions and seeing where it takes me. And I feel like I've done much better now to get rid of all that toxicity. I feel like I've found a good group of peeps who bring good content, are nice, and fun to be around. And I also stopped shipping Destiel as I realized I liked it more in fanon than canon and then I realized fanon Destiel is really just sastiel so now I'm full on the Sastiel train but I do enjoy a lot of other Sam ships and Cas ships.

Anyway, the point to this story is that I feel like a problem that destihellers and maybe even certain parts of the Destiel community in general has is that they don't want to stay in their own lane, they feel like their interpretation is the one true interpretation and they need everyone else to believe in it and if they don't then they're wrong, they're not reading the foreshadowing correctly, they're not noticing the wallpaper, and they're heteronormative or whatever. And I feel like even a lot of former Destiel shippers kind of left the ship behind partly because of just the oversaturation of Destiel and the hive mentality around how you must ship it or be ostracized, you know? It gets pretty exhausting being around those people who are constantly saying things like that. I guess you could say the community ships it so hard that people can get sick of hearing about it. And I mean, it's a good to be passionate about the things you love but you should also be courteous of other people and the things they love too (unless its pedo-related, then disparage to your heart's content).

And like you, I like a good portion of the ships the destihellers just seem to hate. Obviously Sastiel and Megstiel are pretty big ships for me. I truly love both of them. Hanstiel is great as well, I loved their dynamic a lot too. Sam/Jess I absolutely adore. Jess has always been the endgame romance I wanted for Sam. I wish they would bring Jess back but I understand the actress might be a little busy. Dean/Cassie, I've always loved the idea of them, I just wish better writers had been in charge of writing their relationship. I also really liked Dean/Lisa too. Cas/Kelly is wonderful, I love them and I wish they had gotten more time together and I would have been totally down for some romance between them. Cas/Ishim, I can see why you might ship them. I love the actor for Ishim and I think there's some fairly interesting history between Cas and Ishim that's interesting to think about. And I mean before she turned put to be a torturing reaper psychopath, I also did kind of ship Cas/April. Of course, once the torture started, I changed my stance on that but what they had in the beginning I thought was real nice and sweet.

There are so many great ships within all of Team Free Will and I do kind of feel bad for those who are so one-track minded on Destiel because they are literally missing out on a gold mind of shipping fun. I almost want to tell those people, stop taking shipping so seriously and remember to have fun with it every once in a while, you know?

Same anon here & holy shit I didn't know the SC fandom got that awful. As a rule I tend to stay in my lane and read fanfics about my fav ships so I don't go to Twitter often for content. Fans can be very hypocritical & I think it's b/c people feel the need to justify liking things so much now that they bend over backwards to seem in the right. The Joker is one of my all time fav villains but I'm not gonna pretend he isn't terrible just so people won't judge me for liking a fictional character

yeah, I mean... I have shipped things that weren’t exactly completely healthy for the characters or super progressive or whatever simply because I liked them (while being like “it’s fine if you don’t like it, but I interpret it this way and I can see how it could become healthy if this and that happened, and with therapy, and I like their general interactions so I can also imagine aus where the bad things didn’t happen”). It’s a matter of tastes. And sometimes I do interpret a character in a very nice way and other people hate the same character, that’s fine too, and we can argue whether that character is good or bad or what. Sometimes I will ship the white, straight couple even when given different options if I like their dynamic, I shipped Willow and Oz from Buffy more than I shipped Willow and Tara.  Both canon romances but because Willow and Tara were both sweet together, until it got darker, it was more boring to me than Oz, who was so funny. Simple as that. Legends of Tomorrow? Sara and Ava kinda disliked each other, then flirted and bantered and I was sold. It’s all about personality, I won’t automatically ship something based on gender. But I also won’t claim that I ship Sara and Ava because of wlw representation and shipping something else is homophobic, or that my ships are morally superior and all that. (Though I do feel happy even just when couples that involve minorities exist, because people need that, and give ‘points’ to show who have them. The two things can co-exist)It’s just way different from saying ‘I ship this because -representation- and it’s perfect and healthy and must happen, and if you don’t ship it you are racist/homophobic/misogynistic and evil, and this show is queerbaiting us because... one character cares for the other and the actresses sometimes glance at each other’s lips much like the rest of the population does while talking’. Not to mention how much some of those fans confuse characters with actors and straight up torment real people over their jobs until they get blocked, and then use it as proof that they are bad people. How you behave with other real people really determines if you are a decent person or not, it’s not which character you like that does it. Or even why. 

But then, most of these fans were in the Emma x Regina fandom in once upon a time. They are fans who, beside bullying everybody else while claiming to be the victim, did things such as accusing Jennifer Morrison of supporting rape culture because Jen was happy that fans of her canon ship, Emma x Hook, had made a tea dedicated to it. That level of detachment from reality and entitlement. And they kept getting angrier, getting more people into their group while feeding them their teachings and expecting them to be as angry, and inviting them to be, and attracting other people who felt that way and who made it even worse, and then they all moved to a new fandom, supergirl, where they picked a kinda similar couple, Kara and Lena, and from the beginning were as obsessed and demanding as they were by the end of once upon a time, and from there it kept escalating too, exactly because that’s how group dynamic works. They have reached incredibly unacceptable levels and some day, when supergirl is over, they’ll migrate to a new show where they will start attacking everyone and invading all tags to ‘conquer’ the fandom and fight all those ‘bad shippers’ who ship other ships and must be ‘taught’ that they are immoral for it, and escalate from there as well. It’s a cycle, it just happens that it always gets more extreme as time goes by and more people join in. And the poor normal fans of the same thing are either forced to adapt, to hide, or to stay very far away so they won’t be confused with them. 

And yes, some fans did brag, years ago, about how they were teaching karamel fans a lesson because we were mysoginistic, supporting rape culture, racist and homophobic and abuse apologists for shipping Kara and Mon El, and by posting anti-karamel in all tags and pro-supercorp as well, they were effectively ruining the chance for fans to 1 enjoy the show 2 enjoy their tumblr time 3 find other fans who liked the same things and 4, in the case of young impressionable fans, they made them wonder if they were doing something bad by shipping Kara and Mon El and be ashamed of themselves.So in the end Karamel fans became quieter, didn’t post in the karamel tag because you wouldn’t scroll down to find posts there if you had to scroll down hundreds of anti ones, you’d just get in a bad mood, and only talked to their close friends and mutual followers without tagging, while those supercorpers had ‘won’ the tags.

This is just an example too but I have no doubt that they’ll pull the same ‘technique’ in the next fandom, unless it’s big like the ouat one was in which case they’ll get shut down by several groups of people. But if it’s smaller like Supergirl’s? Yeah, they’ll purposefully ruin the tag system and claim to be doing that because of social justice related reasons and then that they are in fact victims and bullied themselves. And at the same time exaggerate their fave characters’ qualities to make them good and pure and a victim so that they can prove they have the moral high ground on that too.

Deku, as a Pro Hero and Katsuki's Duo Partner, has a pretty hectic life since the media are crazy bloodhounds, the villains are a pain in the ass, interacting with fans becomes exhausting at times, and the critics are demons wailing for his blood.

Yeah, very hectic. And on top of that, there's very little time to relax. Most of the days he sneaks some solace in the gym, if he can buy more time he likes to read and immerse himself in his notebooks and research. Fighting Katsuki to blow some steam is a last resort to shed off weeks of frustration and only reserved for off-days or desperate times - because something like that inevitably devolves into gratuitous rough sex or worse, day-long fuck-a-thon. Not that Deku doesn't enjoy it, he simply doesn't have the time to indulge and he knows Kacchan doesn't either, so they try to keep their hands off each other unless the occassion begs for much-needed violent release.

But sometimes, you just want instant relief. Sometimes Deku just wants to kick back and relax like a normal person, go on the internet, without everyone hounding him for a piece of his mind.

At first, Deku masquerades around as a hardcore All Might fan fighting anyone who dares to diss the retired Symbol of Peace . But since his retirement, his popularity has gone cold, not many heated debates take place around him anymore and as sad as this makes Deku, he decides to discover new venues.

Now, Deku knows there's this dark void of fanfiction lurking on the net and there's no escape from it should he ever set foot into it. He is also aware of the dark things that beckon him from the sewers like Pennywise the Dancing Clown (eg. All Might/Endeavour, Hawks/Endeavour, All Might Bowl, All Might/ Hero Harem, All Might/Midnight, All Might/Aizawa/Present Mic and so on), things he should rightfully keep a safe distance from. But this is fucking Deku we are talking about- ofcourse he dares to dip his foot into the murk of fanfiction.

It all goes downhill from there.

One day, Katsuki comes back from his shift to find Deku face-planted into the sofa, he hasn't eaten lunch, hasn't bathed and is claiming trauma, repeatedly insisting that he has sinned and he is going to hell for it, then he shakily holds up a 367k word fic of Villain Might/Endeavour. Katsuki has to slap him back to his senses. Later that night, Deku calls up Toshinori and asks him for forgiveness, when Toshinori asks him worriedly, 'For what?', Deku assures him he DOES NOT wanna know.

After obsessively going through various tropes and completing every Enemies to Lovers / Mutual Pining / Unrequited Love fic there is (and there is a lot, Deku hates himself every day for it), waiting torturous weeks for dead authors to rise from the ashes for a teeny tiny update, Deku finally gives up his small lake of unfulfilling All Might ships (because frankly it's hard to find a fic that suits his tastes and convincingly fleshes out a love story around a man who has pointedly avoided romance for the better part of his LIFE or a find a fic which is COMPLETE) and sets out into the sea of Ships.

Bad Idea.

Very VERY Bad Idea.

(We know it, he knows it. Katsuki is the only one who is blessedly oblivious because he chooses not to wade into Deku's mental shit and compromise his own sanity.)

Strangely, Deku has come to take an odd satisfaction of returning to fan mentality of shipping two people without restraints (rarely more than two)-it's simple, senseless, easy. It gives his head a break from all the overanalyzing it does and gives him a small dose of endorphins when he cant work out, eat out or fuck out the frustration. He was adverse to it first, since these are strangers trying to ship two random people (people he is friends with), and it was unsettling to find so many people shipping them when they've BARELY had any interaction in canon real life! What's the premise of shipping them at all? He just didn't find any allure to it back then. So he kept his reads under fluff and under mature ratings because he feels uncomfortable reading smut about his friends.

But Deku had a 'Oh my God they were ROOMMATES' moment when Jirou and Momo announce that they are dating to the U.A. Alumni, that too after reading a really fluffy Creati/Earphone Jack fic which accurately referenced their public sightings together and spun it into plot-points quite masterfully. ( the author did a real good job on it) And the most horrifying thing about the fic, Deku finds, is the fact that NO ONE, not even the AUTHOR knows how correct they were in their estimates! No one except Deku.

That realization shakes the foundations of Deku's beliefs and morality as he wonders how many fics out there , sfw or smut, requited or unrequited love, enemies to lovers or lovers to strangers, fluff or smut have come so so close to the truth, been so damn close - like an alternate course of their love-story? and WHY IS NO ONE GIVING IT MORE KUDOS?

This is how Deku ends up being the most irredeemable Shipper of the universe- with a mission in hand:

To curate proof of all valid ships and to supply aforesaid proof of it to the world (as subtly as he can of course, so as to not compromise his own identity or the privacy of the Shipped.)

He begins to scour through the net for paparazzi photos, indulges in gossip, pries out information of who is dating whom from his Hero contacts, authenticates it, creates folders and subfolders of photographic 'proof' (they are just teasers really) and whenever anyone writes a fic that comes anywhere close to the real thing he makes sure to tag them in his tumblr/twitter post with photos which basically pour gasoline over their fiery passion to continue dreaming and writing fics around those Ships. Like:

You wrote a fic of Fluffy Iron Fist x Real Steel? Here you go- an obscure pic of them leaving her apartment together

Uravity x Ingenium and Uravity x Froppy? A love triangle that could possibly end in heartbreak?!! Damn, sistah, who knows? (She's confused too, imho) So here you go- Uravity getting tipsy with Froppy and Uravity snuggling to Ingenium under the rain.

Deku becomes a sensational fic-writer-enabler and often gives inspiration to writers who are looking to write for a new fandom. Deku's got their backs.

He sinks so deep into this Shipping business that one day Katsuki catches wind of it. It was becoming painful to keep ignoring Deku's descent into madness. Katsuki was okay with it as long as the nerd did his job well and fucked him even better (which Katsuki will never admit to enjoying, even at gun point. Pull the trigger, you coward). So, yeah, Katsuki could have accepted all of Deku's weird stalkerish behaviours (even if they weren't fixated on him all the time anymore and the 'Kacchan, sugoi!' comments had plummeted drastically....who needs the shitnerd to validate his worth, right?! Right...it didn't make him pissed AT ALL. because admitting that would mean he enjoyed it, WHICH HE DID NOT, MIND YOU)

What Katsuki couldn't accept was Deku accidentally using his official Hero twitter handle to post a very platonic (but in the eyes of rabid fans- borderline homoerotic) pictures of him and Eijirou and posted it as #Ground_Riot. The fucking flood of Zeku-haters and pro-GroundRioters had the comments section on FIRE. The post goes VIRAL.

Deku, fucking DEKU, the man who is secretly ENGAGED to him, is promoting GroundRiot like NO ONE's business and HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HE DID WRONG.

Katsuki finds Deku happily puttering around their shared apartment completely oblivious to the PR hell that has been licking at his heels. He immediately attacks Deku's account and is completely gobsmacked. Lo and fucking behold- every fifth picture in his blog is fucking GROUND RIOT.

Not just that, apparently, THIS MAN, his fucking FIANCE, is not only a renowned peacemaker in inane Ship wars, but is hailed as a Soothsayer of Ships for always correctly prophecizing "Ships that will Sail into the fucking Sunset', he is basically some minor god in the Hero fandom who is extorting excitement out of fic writers and fans alike so that 'the crime of incomplete fics' can be eradicated once and for all. And Deku's fucking commited to it.

(perhaps more commited to Ground Riot than his own betrothal because there isn't A SINGLE POST of ZEKU on his blog)

There's even a post where he answers an ask from anonymous. The question: "Are you also anti-Zeku? I have never seen you post anything related to that ship. Is it because you think it won't Sail?" And Deku answers shortly how he isn't explicitly Anti-Zeku, but doesn't like the idea of reading fanfics of that ship. He clearly witholds his opinion if the ship will sail or not. Katsuki also finds the chat which started all this shit.

Katsuki sees red, he's about to flip his shit when he decides to give Deku one LAST fucking chance to explain WHY THE FUCK is he promoting Ground Riot when he should be shipping Zeku and demands of him if he really wants their Fucking Ship To Sail Or Not.

Deku gets defensive and says of course he does. Katsuki asks why he has been trying to push him onto Eijirou all this time if he wasnt serious about it. Deku doesnt want to answer. Then Katsuki gets fruatrated and asks WHY the fuck didnt he post Zeku.

"Because I don't want to support it"

"We are literally fucking engaged, you moron. What the FUCK do you mean you don't support it?!"

"I support Us, Kacchan! I just don't wanna support Zeku-shippers! Those two things are different!"

"WHy dont you wanna support them?! tHere is No Difference!"

Katsuki's #Zeku goes Viral too. But at this point no one understands what is going on or WHY. Because GZ appears to be a Zeku shipper when Deku is a GroundRiot shipper. Confusion abounds. Zac Efron memes agonize over Both ships, Captain America Japan Civil War Memes make a comeback. And for some reason, Deku keeps posting Ground Riot afterwards too and everytime he does, the next day he is seen limping.

I see that you are an ex-anti and now a pro shipper :) My question is, what was it that got you out of the anti mindset in the first place? I'm curious because I'm not sure what it will take to get antis off of their high horse and just enjoy what they like rather than harass people over what they don't like.

Hm, I think this is a really interesting question with a really long answer. For me, it was a mixture of coming upon a blog just like mine and reading up on fandom history (after the tumblr ban had been announced but before it had been implemented) and exactly what you say about “just enjoy[ing] what [I] like”.

Reading up on the LJ Strikethrough and recognising how these kinds of morality crusades end up hurting marginalised people the most (like the queer community and like victims of rape and abuse) put me off antis’ beliefs fairly quickly. That was an interesting time for me, for sure. I was just beginning to understand the damage that the Christian church had dealt in my life and largely rejecting a lot of their practices and beliefs. That sort of process helped me to see what parallels there are between antis’ purity culture and Christian Fundamentalist purity culture–and I wanted no part in either of them. *Note* this is not to say that every Christian is a bad person or that I hate every one of them in particular, but rather that I have serious issues with the church and no longer identify as ‘Christian’

The other part of me moving from the anti camp to the pro shipping one was rooted in overcoming shame that…I was harbouring for no reason. This is about to be a little TMI, but I always felt ashamed of my sexual feelings and fantasies–especially when it came to self-pleasure because y’know the church is like “if you look at porn or masturbate ever, you’re going to Hell” or whatever. And…antis is the same. Like they’re the people who say that your soul is eternally damned to being “cancelled” if you ever look outside safe, loving vanilla sex or porn because…[insert bullshit unfounded reason here]. 

It’s actually kind of funny because the reason I ever ended up on an antis’ blog was because I didn’t know what the term MA/P meant–and I mean if you google that, you’re just going to get…pictures of maps? I say it’s funny because anti-MA/P blogs tend to be the very same ones that are like “cgl is only for nasty, dirty, paedophiles and your partner is, in fact, a paedophile for…*squints at notes* engaging in consensual sex with an adult.” When I read stuff like that I was like “oh no, I’ve found that kind of hot before–what will these random strangers on the internet think of me with my interest in bdsm and rampant noncon fantasies”. Yeah, my self-esteem wasn’t very high. 

So, I read through their blogs and resigned myself to agreeing with them because if I read through it and pretended like I wasn’t interested in those things, I was good, right? Not at all like my experience with the Christian church /s/.

The only problem was that I’m kind of a kinky hoe with a high libido. That meant that reading through their blogs was less about my agreeing with what they actually had to say and more about seeing those posts that cgl blogs make that are tbh kind of stupid but also really hot to the part of my brain that harbours submission fantasies. While incest isn’t something I like very much–especially involving the term ‘daddy’–power dynamics are the shit™. I’m a simple man with simple wants. I want to be taken care of, and I also want the capital D. So…yeah, my hardcore anti stage really didn’t last long because of the whole them telling me my potential partner is a paedophile and I’m somehow a paedophile-enabler for fantasising about sex between consenting adults? 

Also, they’re super anti-noncon fantasies and I…in this house that’s something we like. I write a lot of fanfiction. Just…leaving that there. 

But, yeah, that’s just…personal and highly specific to me. I’m sure other ex-antis have different stories about different things. Idk, but for me, it’s just completely absurd to tell people to kill themselves (the part of antis’ doctrine that is especially hard to swallow for me) over something that’s not hurting anyone. 

The bottom line is this: you have to want to change on your own. If you really believe in the Christian doctrine antis’ doctrine, anything heathens pro shippers say is lies from Satan. The best we can do is educate those on the fence or those who aren’t too deeply entrenched in antis’ bs and hope that hardliner antis realise that suicide baiting and harassment aren’t okay. The more we get people on the fence to agree with us about suicide baiting and harassment being socially unacceptable, the more marginalised antis’ beliefs will become and the fewer of them there will be. Because, ultimately, the anti movement is performance activism, so if public opinion changes on what’s socially acceptable, they’ll want to perform a new role on the internet, instead.

Cos the shounen genre sometimes wanks the hell out of friendships instead of romance (unless said shounen is mixed in with shoujo like for example Inuyasha that was in both those genres instead of one. Just adding that in cos in the past whenever I said shounen wasn't romance some dumbass would bring up Inuyasha as if unaware that said manga was categorized as both so of course that manga had blatantly romantic moments going on along with the shounen elements)

Naruto is the very definition of Friendship Porn that while it did have its shippy undertones for the pairings that eventually become canon, it was always overshadowed by the friendship theme. Shippers went crazy thinking that because their ship had their bonds concentrated in such detail that it was "romantic" when Kishi himself said that his manga was friendship themed. So while the non-canon shippers complain about development and say "it doesn't make any sense when we have all this pro ship evidence" the sad fact is that all their "evidence" was friendship. Tbh one of the ships that had a lot of panel time and was romantic love as it was stated repeatedly throughout the manga, gets a humorous amount of hate by people who shipped the characters of said ship with their friends. Don't get me started on the Mira/Tsun shippers that suffer the same syndrome as NS shippers.

I kinda hate how platonic love is downplayed a lot by the fandom. Its such bullshit. Love comes in all different forms, and platonic love is still love. Some shippers need to stop acting like they're getting murdered with this, lmao. They can still ship it romantically in fanon like I do, but hearing facts and knowing them shouldn't hurt them so much. Cos canon and fanon go separately and if they can't admit canon then... No wonder they're always complaining instead of enjoying their pairings. (And its true that it gets annoying to go to a shipping tag and seeing your ship treated as a brotp in said tag when you already know that shit but enjoy another version of your ship. So brotp and romance fanon should sometimes be kept separate, lol. I know it sounds bitchy but that's my view on it. Saying it cos I go to actual ship tags that talk all the time about friendship without tagging it as brotp to not upset shippers. People can ship or brotp whatever they want but jfc. I'm not just saying this as a shipper but as someone that knows people ship wlw pairings as brotps. Just like shippers wouldn't want to see "its platonic and bffs" in the tag, I doubt brotp shippers would want to see nsfw and wlw romantic headcanons. I ship that pairing you mentioned too but I knew it wasn't going to be canon and I'm not necessarily butthurt about although it would have been very cool to have it become canon (I knew they were just best friends but I still enjoyed the idea of romance. Tho my main ship is SS so I write that other ship you mentioned as a very close female bond that doesn't go romantic, okay I'm rambling). I also have m/f brotps. Two brotps of that sort that have been proven as just friendship and they're beautiful friendships cos I've got guy friends like that irl and it never turned romantic.

I'm not straight myself and I've seen my sexuality butchered by straight writers constantly. My sexuality gets written as promiscuous and into orgies, ffs. So I don't get why some people are so desperate for obviously straight writers to give them representation and if they're not given any representation, they complain about h/mophobia. If they want it so bad, they should create their own characters, or write fanfics (I write fanfics for my fave same sex ships. One which I wish was canon but I understand under the circumstances that it wasn't ever going to be canon) or whatever instead of complaining about a writer not giving them what they want cos in the end of the day, this is a fact...

They're not the ones in control of the story, the writer is, and if they don't like it they should maybe move on and create their own content.

And tbh I don't get it what is it with this whole "we hate straight people but want them to write us" bullshit. But that's a separate subject. 😂😂
