Rubian Soulmate AU
I finally finished writing it ahhhh
I eventually decided that I was going for a sketch-style writing for this. Just short bits and pieces here and there, piecing together some scenes, but not fully fleshed out into a storyline (it coincides with the original story mostly anyway)
So here it is! Enjoy!
This is a Liam and Ruby Soulmate AU requested by an anon (possibly @thedarkestcrew?) ask, in which damage done to one half of the soulmate pair would translate to the other half.
Word count: 4400
===
Liam
“Where did all these bruises come from?”
I was driving through Highway 95 in Maryland when I noticed the bruises crowning my knuckles. They just…appeared, like petals floating to the surface of water. It is possible that I punched something—or someone—at some point in the last few days, or tripped and fell, and using…my fists to break the fall? But I don’t recall doing any of that.
Then again, my head hadn’t been the most reliable in these past few weeks, either.
They weren’t the first. A couple of weeks ago, I woke up with a cut on my upper arm, and the blood drenched half of my sleeve, but the sleeve wasn’t torn or cut, so it couldn’t have been me… Another one came a few days after that, when I was driving, and a sudden searing pain came to my wrist, like I was burnt by a frying pan, but that part of my skin wasn’t even touching anything. The list goes on.
I think I’m going insane.
Some people…some who are lucky enough to find their soulmates, found themselves with identical wounds on them, because when one half of that bond gets hurt, the other one suffers, too. Mom’s bruises never translated onto our birth dad. Maybe that was why he was so okay with hurting her. It wasn’t until she met Harry, did that magic—or curse—work on both of them.
But that’s exactly that—it only happens after you’ve met the person. If I’ve somehow met her, and didn’t know who she was, then I’ve really screwed up. Big time.
It couldn’t have been anyone in Caledonia, otherwise I would’ve known. No one from home, either. There weren’t even that many of us left. Could it be someone from East River? For some reason, I just couldn’t be sure… There’re this weird quality in my memory when I think of East River, glowing tinge surrounding everything, blurring details, and flaring up the edges, making it hard to see for too long.
Also, if I met her in East River, why isn’t she with me?
If she’s really out there, I felt sorry for all the pain I’ve caused her in the past few days. When I narrowly escaped that group of Skip Tracers, my arms were all cut up, real pretty. I can’t imagine the horror she must have felt when her arms just, out of nowhere, started spontaneously bleeding half of her blood out.
I really ought to take better care of myself, even if it’s just for her sake.
When I crossed the state boarder into Pennsylvania, I managed to find an old payphone, and left a voice mail for my brother to let him know where I am, and that I’m coming his way. I didn’t want to—asking for Cole’s help was one of the few things that I genuinely want to avoid—but I’m really desperate.
The truth is, just imagining him gloating about this—about me needing his help—was almost enough to make me turn around. Think about the last time I asked for his help… didn’t work out so well, did it? But whatever Cole has to offer, whatever nightmare I have to live through going back to the League, is better than being hauled back into the camp.
I don’t think they’d actually take me back into a camp, anyway.
When I got passed the wrong Wilmington, I briefly glimpsed the road sign that read US 13, and a voice suddenly rang in my head.
Turn off here. It urged.
The feeling was distinctly different from my reluctance to meet Cole—it was a drive, asking me to go somewhere, rather than run from somewhere.
Whatever it was, I can’t listen, no matter how hard I wanted to, no matter how it warmed my heart just thinking about that impulse, like it would lead me home, even though I had no idea how.
I got into the city of Philadelphia, and found my brother’s apartment soon enough. When I got into his building, a woman threw me a sideway glance that made my hair stood on their ends.
Please don’t recognize me, please don’t recognize me, please don’t recognize me… I muttered in my head while I pressed the buzzer. The door swung opened, and I was snatched inside by a forceful arm.
“What the hell were you thinking?” Cole snarled before I could even lay eyes on him properly. “Why didn’t you call me when you got here?”
He looked much better than me, that much was clear. Cole never had any wound that wasn’t his own, and from the looks of him, he hadn’t seen much action lately. His hair was clean-cut, brushed neatly away from his face. He was wearing a white shirt and dark blue jeans, with metal-frame glasses which were clearly without diopters to finish the look. In this getup, you’d expect him to be a graduate student in U Penn, not a high school dropout.
“I… I didn’t have any money to place a call.” I muttered, feeling my voice getting smaller. Gosh, I hated this. I hated that I felt like a child again. I took off my jacket, and hung it on the peg right next to his. They were two identical black leather jackets, which Mom bought us years ago—she got them a couple of sizes bigger than we were at the time, in anticipation that we would eventually grow into them. Cole did, whereas I felt like I still hadn’t.
Cole let out a long and harsh breath, and gave me a scan head to toe. “You’ve seen better days.” He commented eventually, a subtle amusement in his tone. “Even for you, this is a bit excessive…” He gingerly lifted my right wrist, and got a good look at my forearm, all cut up.
You don’t say. I wanted to retort, but didn’t. “What are you doing in Philly?” I asked as I retracted my hand.
Cole raised an eyebrow. “You really want to know?”
Maybe not. “I’d probably know eventually, wouldn’t I?” I said.
He scratched his chin, frowning. “You know what this means, right? You know where we’re going?”
“Look, if I could just find Mom and Harry…” I began, but he raised his hand and stopped me.
“No,” He snapped, “We don’t have that kind of time. My assignment here is done. I’m being extracted at midnight, which is in less than four hours, and if you think I’d let you out running into the wild and being hauled into a camp again, you’d have another thought coming.”
Choose me. I remembered the subtext of what Cole said that night when he left home, and now it was ringing in a different tone. Now I don’t have a choice.
“All right.” I sighed. “Whatever you say.”
He frowned deeper. But it took him a while to say something. “Look, I know the last time you came with me, it didn’t end so well, but things are turning around.” He said, palms down, pacifying. “I promise, just stick it out a few months.”
“How do you know?” I asked.
He bit his lip. “I just do. Trust me.” He said, then gave me a tight smile, “Tell you what, I’ll go get us something to eat, and you clearly need a shower.” He took off his glasses, grabbed the keys, then, as if remembered something, added with a grin, “Do not, drown in the bathtub.”
“Yeah, yeah.” I rolled my eyes.
Before he could open the door, though, I stopped him. “Cole,” I began, but didn’t really know how to finish.
“Yeah?” He prompted.
“Have we...” I caught myself just for a moment. What am I doing? “...have we ever been to Virginia Beach?”
Because that…memory? was so vivid, that I couldn’t pretend it wasn’t there, calling me at every moment I so much as allowed my mind to idle for a second. But it also had that bright glare around it, like it didn’t really belong to me, like I was seeing it through a mirror, into a different dimension where we were all happier people.
Cole was there, looking exactly like how he was now, but Claire was also there, and that didn’t make any sense…
“No…?” Cole said, “We lived in Wilmington. We went to Wrightsville, remember?”
Of course I do, but… I shook my head. “It’s just… I kept seeing this…memory, that we were there, and Claire was there, too…”
Cole pressed his lips tight. I know mentioning Claire’s name would probably put him on edge, but it’s not like I have other people to talk about her with anyway. A part of me wanted to be a bit mean about it, but I couldn’t bring myself to. I didn’t have the strength.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He said, voice rigid. “Just go take your shower. I’ll be back with the food.”
And he left, leaving me alone in his white and bare apartment.
I still couldn’t be sure that it was a good idea coming here. If I’m being honest with myself, it wasn’t even about my negative view on the League, or what it had turned my brother into, but that…I’m not sure how to be his brother anymore. I’m not even sure that he needs a brother.
Hell. Looking around this place, I got the feeling that a brother wasn’t the only thing he didn’t need. But then again, knowing how Cole kept his room, it was maybe a good thing that he had so few belongings here. This place…it didn’t even feel like someone actually live here; there were so few things breaking the white of the walls, it was almost glaring to my eyes.
I first went to check his bed, to see if he still has that weird habit—falling asleep with cigarettes still in his hand. His bedsheet looked clean enough; nothing charred. No ashtray, either. Maybe he quit.
Satisfied, I went to grab a t-shirt and a pair of pants from his closet, and dived into the pressurized water in his shower.
I can’t remember when was the last time I had running water. Probably…when I was in the League’s safe house? Gosh. My skin is so filthy, the water only started running clean after a good ten minutes of scrubbing, and I was scrubbing hard.
I was extra careful when I cleaned my arms, though. Not particularly because I was scared of pain, but more that I didn’t want to hurt this…person who might share this unfortunate connection with me, however low the chance might be. I didn’t want to make her suffer even more—somehow, I knew it was a her, for reasons I couldn’t quite put into words.
When I got out of the shower, I felt like my entire body had been turned inside out. My skin was glowing pink against the white tiling of Cole’s bathroom. He is an inch or two taller than me—which was sore to admit, but hey, I went through puberty in a lot worse condition than he did—so his pants hung a little too long around my ankles.
Then I finally got a good look at myself in the mirror. Damn, I looked awful. The dark shadows under my eyes were so purple, they looked almost black. Not to mention the countless scratches and bruises. There was a new one on my left cheek, just above the jawline. Whether it was mine or hers, I didn’t know.
Just as I threw the towel over my head, and started rubbing the water away from my hair, I heard it—siren. It began from a distance, a low wailing, but it was enough to set every hair on my back on its end. As I flew out of Cole’s shower, grabbed my jacket, and rushed to the window side, the siren got closer—and multiplied. The sound of them were like a harmony from hell.
Should I run? Should I stay?
I should run.
Even though they might not be coming for me, I knew better than to push my luck—it hadn’t really been on my side recently, and that woman who looked at me a second too long when I got in the building was probably proving me right. I threw the apartment door open, and on a second thought, ran for the roof instead of the ground floor.
I can reconvene with Cole later. I need to stay out of sight now. Cole’s a smart guy, he knows what to do in a situation like this.
It had started raining. I tripped on a mossy patch on the rooftop, and almost broke my jaw, but I stood up and kept running. I pushed myself over the ledge of the next building, and sprinted for the fire escape on the far end. The sound of the first bullet fired almost made me lose my bearing when I lowered myself onto the metal shaft.
They are on the other side. There were two fully populated buildings between me and those bullets, and they were firing at someone else—which means I’m not who they’re after. These are all good news.
Right?
Since when had I been that lucky after I turned twelve?
I pulled the hood of the jacket over my head, and dove into the shadow of the next alley. The gunfire had stopped, which meant that they probably got whoever they were after. I took the long way around the block, trying to get a hang of the situation, getting an idea of where I could find Cole without being spotted—
Oh, I found him alright.
Fuck. No. Fuck.
I only caught sight of him for a second before they slammed the back of that van shut, and in that brief second, he looked up, and he saw me.
No.
Christ. No. I… I got him caught. I did… I did this… Why didn’t I warn him? Why didn’t I go to him as soon as I heard the siren?
What have I done?
If you’re caught, you’re disavowed. I still remembered that phrase like it was etched into my skull. If anything encapsulates what I hate about the League the most, this is it. And now, Cole is going to be another casualty under that cold hard rule. The thought almost made my knees buckled, but instead of crashing down, I up and ran.
I ran. From this nightmare of my own making.

Ruby
“Ruby!”
The scream came before the punch could land. I didn’t register what was happening in that first moment, not until the blood was dripping down my elbows, and staining the blue mats under us.
“Go to the infirmary!” Coach Johnson ordered, and I gladly obeyed. I could hear the whispering judgements forming even before I left the training room—what was that? What’s wrong with her? Where did those come from?
I knew exactly where they came from.
If Chubs was here, he’d likely yell at me for not getting these wounds taken care of immediately, but I simply…couldn’t. I ran for the shower stall, being careful not to stain the curtain, and turn on the tap.
With the water pouring out the showerhead, steaming up every bit of air around me, blurring my vision, I finally let the tears fall.
My arms didn’t hurt that much. At least, not as much as my heart. The bruises were bearable—who doesn’t get those occasionally living in the wild? I got one every other day even just from the training. But these cuts…he was in danger. Maybe he only got away with it within an inch of his life.
The only consolation I had was that I wasn’t mortally wounded, which meant he wasn’t, either. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t regret my decision of letting him go every second of every day.
If I did that to protect him, all these wounds and bruises only proved how wrong I was, how in vain my suffering had been.
“Ruby?” Cate’s voice.
I swallowed hard before answering. “Yes?”
“Are you all right?” She asked, standing outside of my stall.
“Yes.” I lied.
“Coach Johnson said you were hurt—” She didn’t buy it. “Look, if you don’t want to go to the infirmary, I can take a look—”
“I’m fine.” I cut her off. The timer on the tap beeped, warning me that the water would start running cold. My blood was dripping down from my fingers, dropping into the shallow water on the concrete floor like roses blooming in the snow.
“Ruby, I can see the blood.” Cate said dryly, then softer, coaxing. “Come out, please. Let me dress your wounds.”
Only if I could just close my eyes, and pretend for a second that the person who was waiting for me with antiseptic was Chubs, not Cate. If only I could pretend that these wounds were mine, not of the boy that I dreamt of every night for the past few months.
If only I could pretend that they were here with me, or that I wasn’t here at all.
I sighed, and brushed the curtain open. To Cate’s credit, she didn’t flinch at the sight of me. “Oh, Ruby…” She said with a tone like I was a stray cat ready to be put down. She reached out, and gingerly lifted my hand to get a better look at my arm.
“Press on it.” She handed me a towel, and sat down on the bench before patting the empty space beside her, motioning for me to join her.
I did as she said as she tore open a paper package. “This is going to hurt a little…” She gently dabbed the fabric square on my wounds, and I hissed out of reflex. I hated this. I hated showing her my weakness, and I guessed, in a weird way, she understood that. She didn’t comment on any of it, only continued to wrap my arms up in silence.
“There.” When she’s done, both of my forearms were wrapped entirely in gauzes.
“Th…thank you.” I managed to choke out.
She gave me a tender smile. “Don’t mention it.” She stood up, collecting the empty packages off the bench, and turned to leave.
Before she was out of the door, however, she turned around, and said, “You know, you get those wounds together, and you heal together, too.” She paused for a second, “You’re…not entirely helpless in this situation.”
Ten minutes after she left, I was still sitting on that bench, pondering her words. I didn’t even know what she said was true, but if it was, it meant that when I took care of myself, I took care of him, too. That, somehow, didn’t seem so bad.
I wondered how Cate knew that. She and Rob were clearly not soulmates, and I didn’t even know why she would want to date him, even without considering that fact. Rob—ruthless, arrogant, hateful—was everything opposite to what she seemed to hold dear.
But then again, she probably didn’t understand why someone would find their soulmate only to let them go on their own.
That day when I let Liam go, I made a decision that I would be whoever the League wants me to be, and make it so that they wouldn’t miss him. And for the longest time, I had kept to that promise. But not today, not now.
I just want to be myself again, even if it’s just for a moment.
So I brushed open the curtain to the stall, and allowed myself to be vulnerable again, for everyone and no one to see.

His eyes traveled from my face to where the water had collected on my chest, and I raised my arms just that much higher.
His mouth half-opened for what I was sure to be a snide remark, but whatever it was never managed to pass his lips. His face froze, brows drew together, and he reached out. Before I could shift away—to where though, I had no idea; my back was already against the wall—he grabbed my wrist, and lifted my arm.
“It was you.” Cole said with a tone of half astonishment, half…anger?
“What was?” I raised an eyebrow at him, trying to hide how much I felt like a kid being caught red-handed, stealing candy bars.
He threw me a “really?” look. “Don’t insult my intelligence.” He snapped, “These are Liam’s, aren’t they?”
I almost asked “how do you know”, but that would confirm his suspicion. “What makes you say that?” I asked instead.
He rolled his eyes. “I’m not playing games with you.” He huffed, “Soulmates should stick together. What were you thinking sending him out into the wild? Do you have any idea how dangerous he is to you? Or you to him? The poor bastard doesn’t even know you exist!”
“And as long as I stay in the League, that fact shall remain.” I said, more resolute and calmer than I thought possible.
He blew out a sigh of exasperation. “Look, I don’t care what kind of sainthood complex you have going on, I’m telling you—you are not doing either of you any favors, and if you think this is somehow a good idea, I beg you, think again, because you definitely look smarter than this.”
“What do you know?” I retorted, finally couldn’t keep the lid on my anger anymore. “Do you have any idea how much he hates it here? How hard he was trying to avoid this place before you drag him into this mess?”
Cole really laughed. “You think I don’t know?” He raised an eyebrow at me, and I met his glare head on. “I was the one that let him go when he got away that first time.” He tried to brush his hair back with his hand, but it gave out a weird flex before he could reach his head. “And I’ve seen enough soulmates pairs in my life to know that I never want one. Have you any idea what would happen to him if you were injured when he was on the run? Soulmates stick together so they don’t double their chances on dying, but I guess no one ever set your logic straight, did they?”
My head was so flushed with anger that I actually let him finished.
“Go find him.” Cole snapped. “And for Christ’s sake, stay together this time.”

Liam
“I didn’t need freedom; I needed you!” I half-screamed, trying to get the frustration out past the chaos raging in my head. How could I—? How could she—? What the hell—?
On the receiving end of my scream, Ruby’s face was painted with grief, lined with tears that almost made my anger buckle. Almost.
“Did you just…not want to be with me anymore?” Facing her silence, my pain came out softer eventually. Please, just tell me, and I will leave you alone.
“No…” She choked out. “I… I was wrong.” She swallowed hard before continuing, and despite the anger still roaming my vein, I wanted to reach out and touch her. “We should…we should stay together. I knew I couldn’t bear to see you with the League, see them take away all the good in you that I love…”
“Is that how you think of me?” I snapped before I realized what I was doing, “That I am so weak that the League is bound to break me?”
“No!” She shook her head violently, “No, I don’t think you are weak… If anything, I think you are much stronger than me. But I was weak.” She finally looked back at me, her green eyes gleaming in the dim light of this dust-covered room. “I’m so sorry.”
Before I could react to what she said—I didn’t even know what I was going to say or do—the sound of a gunshot broke every single thought clean out of my head.
Ruby was running before I could do anything about it. She pushed the door of the shop open, and another shot blew open the window on the outside, shattering the glass all over the floor.
“Ruby!” I shouted as I dodged, crouching with my hands over my ears, but she was already up and running again, out of the door and behind the woman that was escaping the scene—with a gun in her hands.
“Ruby, stop!” I shouted again, got on my feet to catch her, but I never manage. I skidded on the broken glass, and fell, hands first, into the shards.
I heard her hiss. She stopped dead on her way, and whirled around to find me on the floor, holding my right hand on my laps, pressing it against the fabric of my jeans to try and stop the bleeding.
The blood was dripping down to her fingers. As she walked slowly towards me, the red, looking almost black, dropped on the dust-covered floor, leaving a spotting route, marking her path. When she knelt down beside me, finally close enough to touch me, I found that she was smiling. A totally mirthless, wry and painful smile.
“Give me your hand.” She said softly, almost like a whisper.
“You should treat yours first.” I said, trying to catch her hand, to see how much of a damage I’d done.
“We only need to treat one of us.” She let out a small breath, almost like something caught there. “We get them together, and we heal them together, too.”
That, somehow, broke through all the mess in my head and reached my mind. I let her take my arm, and carefully wrap her scarf on my hand, all the while her words played on repeat in my head.
We get them together, and we heal them together, too.
When she was done wrapping my hand up, the wounds on her hand stopped bleeding, too. I didn’t know why—I wasn’t even completely over that anger or frustration—but when she placed her hand in mine, a tender “there” escaping her lips, all I wanted to do was kiss her.
Instead, I gently enveloped my fingers around her hand. “There.” I said, pressing my good hand over hers.
And we stayed in that silent, that touch, just a little while longer.

spencer reid x reader
Best years part eight | part seven | part six | part five | part four | part three |part two |part one
Summary: Oregon and mystery has the reader and spencer growing closer in a case.
warnings: normal criminal minds things,
A/N: based on season 7 episode 19; this is one of my fav episodes
Tumblr media
“You know, Y/N, you should join me for one of my hand-on-hand combat classes,” Derek spoke walking up to stand between Y/N and Spencer who were walking out of the elevator.
“And why’s that, Derek?” She asked, her head dramatically turning to the side to look at him.
“Well you got shot, you need to add some combat to go along to your scars,” he said laughing.
Y/N rolled her eyes at the man, knowing he meant no harm, and he genuinely wanted her to come to one of his classes.
“Morgan, I am a very good hand-on-hand fighter, remember I was top of the class at the academy,” she said, opening the door to the bullpen.
“She was, and when she was scared by her neighbor the other morning she--”
“Hey! Look Hotch texted we have a case let’s go,” Y/N interrupted Spencer before he could finish the embarrassing story.
“Alright wonder woman, whatever you say.” Derek laughed as he ruffled Y/N’s her walking towards the round table room, her and Spencer following closely behind.
The round table room was filled with the others as they sat down. Penelope being the only one missing from the room.
“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry for the delay,” Penelope said, swiftly walking into the room as she carried her laptop in her hands. “The system was down. We overwork her. And I had to go into the belly of the beast, who I affectionately nicknamed Persephone, and do some machine whispering, oh-” she stopped, grabbing her remote from Derek as he handed it to her- “thank you. Which is good because this one is a doozy.”
“It will never cease to amaze me how much she can get out in one breath,” Y/N said leaning over to Rossi next to her.
 “Oh yeah,” he agreed.
“Emma Baker, thirty-eight, math teacher from Medford, Oregon. She went missing seventeen days ago, and her body was found yesterday afternoon at St. Baldwin’s, St. Baldwin’s is a now-defunct psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. Now that is in Salem, Oregon, which is 270 miles away from Medford and we’ve been called in for the bizarre nature of the case.” Penelope then pulled up a picture of the body that was found.
The victim laid on a bed, hands folded across her stomach, and dressed in a dress from the sixteenth century.
“Wow, look at that dress,” JJ said as she looked at the picture.
“Was she going to a renaissance fair?” Emily asked.
“Not with her feet bound,” Y/N said as she looked at the victim’s feet.
“And the missing persons report says she was in jeans and a t-shirt,” Penelope added.
“Look at how she’s laid out, it’s almost like it’s a ceremony and she’s the sacrifice,” Derek said, flipping through the pictures in his hand.
“There’s obvious staging going on,” Rossi said.
“Could it be a ritualistic killing?” JJ asked.
“And the cause of death is still unclear, the M.E. report shows no sign of sexual assault or mutilation except mangled and missing fingernails,” Hotch explained.
“You know, there were rumors of satanic rites being performed at a Byberry Hospital in Pennsylvania, which is also an abandoned asylum,” Spencer said.
“Judging by all the graffiti, this place isn’t exactly locked down,” Derek observed.
“Uh, yeah, local P.D. said that vandals and vagrants have been breaking in,” Penelope added on to Derek.
“Which means she could have been killed elsewhere and placed here,” Y/N said.
“She had limestone under her fingernails, but limestone wouldn’t have been used when this asylum was built, so she was obviously held somewhere else,” Spencer said, looking over to Y/N.
“Well, the bottom line is, the unsub transported her hundreds of miles from her hometown for a reason,” Emily said.
“We just need to find out what that reason is, wheels up in 30,” Hotch said, dismissing everyone.
---------------
“Emma Baker was a divorced math teacher, no children,” Rossi said as they began going over victimology.
“She has a boyfriend, though, who’s a drummer in a goth band. Her Facebook has pictures of them at the Bram Stoker Vampire festival and Slayerama, which celebrates all things gothic,” Penelope explained.
“Hm, a teacher by day, Elvira by night,” JJ said with a posing smirk on her face.
“Well, clearly this is a woman with two different sides to her personality,” Derek said, taking a sip of coffee from his mug.
“Yeah, the boyfriend’s band pours fake blood all over themselves on stage,” Spencer said, looking at a page in the manila folder.
“Ah, reminds me of high school,” Y/N said as her eyes locked on the file in her lap.
The eyes of everyone on the team turned to her in question at her statement. She looked up, realizing what she had said didn’t make sense to them.
 “Don’t ask.”
“Okay, so if these two were Satanists, it wouldn’t be a stretch,” Emily said, going back to the topic of victimology.
“Garcia, has the boyfriend been questioned by local P.D.?” Hotch asked.
“He has, by phone. He’s got an airtight alibi, he and his band have been on tour in Asia for the last month,” Penelope answered.
“If it’s not the boyfriend, the unsub could be someone in their circle,” Y/N said.
“Emily, you asked earlier if she was going to a renaissance fair, there’s something to that,” Rossi said, looking at Emily next to him.
“Based on the dress, there could be more of a connection to history then the occult,” Emily spoke.
“Renaissance fairs typically replicate sixteenth-century England,” Spencer began. “They surged in popularity since they began in the 1960s.”
“And it’s not just a bunch of nerds in customs eating turkey legs, you guys,” Penelope added.
Y/N hummed in agreement, memories of her and her high school friends going to the fairs coming to mind.
“A different time is somehow very important to this unsub,” Hotch said.
-------------
Y/N stood with Spencer and JJ as they waited for the tailor in the shop to come back. They had just gotten a call from Derek telling them that she died from nicotine poisoning through the garments of the dress she was sown into.
“This unsubs’, not the first to do this, poisoned garments actually have an incredibly long history, going all the way back to the shirt of Nessus, which killed Hercules,” Spencer explained, Y/N listening intently.
A door chimed as the tailor entered the room, bringing the attention of the three to him.
“Okay, so, I double-checked, and this fabric-” the tailor pointed to the fabric in the evidence bag- “is not manufactured for commercial sale,” he explained.
“Is it possibly something from the past that was maybe discontinued?” Spencer asked.
“No,” the tailor responded. “I can tell you one thing though, the fabric is a double-layer brocade. It was probably custom-made for someone, and is very pricey.”
“What about the dress, was there anything that stood out?” Y/N asked the man.
“Well, it’s homemade for one,” he responded.
“Okay, how do you know that?” JJ asked.
“Well, the seams are uneven. Whoever the seamstress is, she isn’t very skilled,” the tailor explained.
“What makes you so sure it’s a woman?” Spencer asked.
“Well, there’s some detail to the work in here that would require small hands,” the tailor explained.
Y/N looked up to Spencer, seeing how he also had the same questioning look on his face as her.
“Oh and this is interesting,” the tailor said to bring their attention to the picture of the dress. “See, now, the stitching on this hem, it’s narrow in some places and wider in others.”
“Small hands, easily distracted,” Spencer said, picking up on what the tailor was showing in the picture. “Let me ask you this, how old do you think someone could be and still effectively sew this?”
“Well, a pattern of this complexity, they’d have to be a teenager,” the tailor said, handing Spencer the items as he turned around and saw some fabrics being brought in.
“Okay, thanks,” Y/N said to the man as he walked away. She walked over to Spencer and looked at the pictures of the dress again.
“Based on the size of the victim’s body, I think only an adult male would be able to lift her and move a hospital bed,” JJ said, putting together all the information she had been told.
“So, what’re we looking for a team?” Y/N asked looking between JJ and Spencer.
“Or an unsub with a young accomplice who’s been coerced,” Spencer elaborated.
JJ and Y/N looked at each other both nodding as they silently agreed with what Spencer was saying. The three left the building and headed to the car parked outside the door.
---------------
Y/N walked into the room of the next victim with Emily and Rossi. The body adorning another renaissance style dress was laying in the middle of the room.
“Alice Pritchard was 22, a senior at Portland College, she went missing five days ago, a realtor found her body here this morning,” The detective explained as they walked up to the body.
“I don’t see any physical similarities to our first victim, she’s a lot smaller than Emma, different coloring, different age,” Emily pointed out as she observed the victim.
“So that means these women aren’t surrogates for anyone,” Y/N said.
“But he did lay her out the same way,” Emily added.
“She’s displayed in the center of the room just like the other victim in the asylum,” Rossi said.
“It’s almost like she’s being presented,” Y/N said, tucking her hands into her navy coat pockets as she walked to the end of the body.
Emily crouched down next to the body and inspected the dress. “There is so much attention paid to detail, this is also satisfying some internal desire of the unsub,” she explained.
“So, why leave bodies in an empty storefront and the asylum?” The detective asked.
“Good question,” Rossi said, turning around to look out the window. Y/N followed behind him to see what was out of the window also. “There should be a connection between the two.”
“Or maybe it’s not about the storefront at all, look,” Y/N said, pointing to a theater across the street.
“A theater company performing Shakespeare,” Emily said, reading the sign above the doorway.
The three turned back to look at the body.
“The dress, the white makeup, this victim could literally be wearing a costume,” Emily said as she looked between Rossi and Y/N.
“What if this was the closest to the theater that the unsub could get…” Rossi trailed off.
 “Without being caught,” Y/N finished.
----------
Y/N stood next to Spencer as him and Hotch worked on what the numbers from the writing on the wall could be.
“Alice’s sorority sisters say she wanted to be a nurse and she was active in a Christian youth group,” Derek said as he approached the three.
“So the opposite of our last victim,” Y/N said as she let out a huff, sitting down in one of the seats around the table.
“Yeah, and if she was into anything dark, her best friends sure didn’t know anything about it,” JJ continued.
“She was in Portland collecting donations for an orphanage when she disappeared. The unsub could have approached her on the street,” Derek said, looking at Hotch.
Y/N looked over to Spencer, his eyes darting back and forth from the folder in his hands to the numbers written on the clear board.
“Hey, baby girl, you’re on speaker, give me the lowdown,” Derek said answering the phone.
“Chocolate thunder, you can have the whole kit and caboodle just say the word,” Penelope flirted. “Oh, and I cross-referenced the names you found on the wall with missing women in Oregon and I came up with some matches. Christine Torres is a forty-year-old homemaker from Eugene, Oregon. She went missing over a month ago after she dropped her kids off at school.”
“Any other women named Emma missing?” JJ asked.
“Uh-uh, just the one whose body we found, same thing with Alice,” Penelope answered.
“Garcia, what was the exact date Christine was reported missing?” Spencer asked as he backed away from the board.
“February 28th, Emma went missing on March 19th, and Alice on the 22nd,” Penelope answered.
Spencer walked back over to the board and looked at the numbers. Y/N stood up from her chair to stand next to him, wondering what it was he was seeing.
“What is it, Spence?” She asked him.
“Look at this.” Spencer grabbed her hand gently and pulled her behind the clear board. “I think these numbers are dates if you reverse them and chop off the eleven at the beginning and end--”
“That’s two days after each woman went missing,” Hotch interrupted.
“It’s more than that though look,” Spencer said coming back around to the front of the board, pointing to the first number. “March 1st is Sain Eichatadt day, March 21st is the Spring Equinox, and the 24th is the Feast of the Beast.”
“Those are all important holidays in the satanic calendar for sacrifices,” Y/N said coming to the same realization Spencer was. Their minds clicked together and now they both had the same thoughts running through.
“What about the eleven on the end?” Derek asked.
“To many of occultists, the eleven is symbolic of Lucifer,” Spencer explained.
“Okay, I thought we were moving away from satanic killings,” JJ said.
“Apparently we need to reconsider it.” Hotch’s eyes were trained on the file with the victims in them.
“There’s gotta be some sort of connection to the devil here,” Spencer said, which had Y/N nodding her head in agreement.
“Reid, what other upcoming dates are significant to Satanists?” Hotch asked.
“Good Friday, then Easter Eve, and then preparations begin in mid-April for the most important night of all--”
“Walpurgis night on April 30th,” Y/N said, turning to Spencer. He looked at her surprised, having no idea she knew so much about this stuff.
“Good Friday’s in two days, that means he’s hunting for his next victim today.” Derek’s concern in his voice was evident as he spoke.
“We need to give the profile soon,” Hotch said, agreeing with Derek’s concern.
They nodded, going their separate ways to do their work. As normal, Spencer and Y/N stayed by the boards to work, as they both found it was the easiest place to focus.
“Since when did you know all about these things?” Spencer’s back was turned to Y/N as he looked at the boards.
“Hm?” She questioned, not knowing what he meant.
“About these Satanic things, should I be concerned?” He joked with her, which she returned with a small laugh.
“There’s a lot of things you still don’t know about me, Dr. Reid.” Y/N winked at the boy wonder, making a beating red blush form on his face.
His mouth opened to speak, but truly he was too flustered to do so. The simple act of the wink making his knees go weak.
“No, in high school I had to write a paper on the Salem Witch Trials. I dabbled into some of the Satanic stuff to build my thesis more and give some context,” she said, shrugging as she turned back to her work.
Spencer nodded as if silently saying ‘cool’, his own attention now being divided back to the board.
As the two worked, they gave silent glances to each other. Unbeknownst to the other, these were the simple acts that formed their love for each other inside. While they had been dating for a while now, both of them falling in love each moment they spent together, they never voiced the feelings for each other.
Spencer not doing so because of his small fear of rejection. Thoughts that said, what if she doesn’t say it back? or does she not feel the same way?, were ones that vacated his thoughts. But when he looked at her smile, he couldn’t help but feel a fire burn in his heart, her presence being the very thing that started and fueled it. When he held her in his arms, her scent vacating his senses, he could feel all his anxiety leave him. The only thing mattering in those moments was her, and how she felt and smelled. How when she touched him he’d go weak and want nothing more than to just lay with her all day. The thoughts of their future would play like a movie in his head as he held her, and he couldn’t wait for him to act it out.
Now Y/N, she never voiced it because of her constant fear he would be taken away from her. Her fear being that the moment she said it, the next day he would be gone. Her tormentor taking him away and hurting the one she was beginning to love the most. She wasn’t afraid of love per se, but the thought of her having to say it aloud like she had to in front of Caroline to her friends, it only made her want to crawl away and hide. Y/N knew, she knew this feeling that Spencer was it for her, was true. Her heart could tell her it faster than her brain could even have time to think about it. When he held her or when she kissed him, the butterflies were everywhere in her. They fluttered in her stomach and they clouded all rational thought. And the one thing that gave her the most anxiety, was the fear of her great love being taken away.
-------------
“Based on the dresses and makeup the victims were found in, we’re looking for an unsub who is living in an elaborate fantasy world.” The crowd of officers listened intently as Emily began the profile.
“Be believes he’s special, as though he could be acting on behalf of the devil,” Y/N continued.
“This unsub tortured his victims by submerging them in water for days before killing them,” JJ said.
“Which means he’s deliberate and patient,” Y/N embellished on what JJ said.
“This guy has a vivid imagination,” Derek began. “The costumes and makeup suggest that he’s a history buff or he may be a fan of Shakespeare.”
“Using nicotine as poison is highly unusual, so he’s either very well-read or under the guidance of another,” Spencer spoke with his hands as he explained.
“His interests and delusions have caused him to become isolated socially,” Emily said.
“He can’t appear normal to his potential targets, and his crimes are not driven by sex or greed, but instead by his delusional belief system,” Rossi added.
“Although the bodies of only two victims have been recovered, there’s likely a third. Specifically, Christine Torres, who disappeared in February,” Hotch said.
“This unsubs exact age is difficult to determine, but he’s probably in his 20s to 30s,” Derek explained.
“The fact that he travels so far to abduct his victims indicates he has very specific selection criteria,” Y/N said, then turning to Spencer who began to speak.
“This unsub has a female or underage accomplice who sewed the dresses the victims were found in, but she may not be a partner in the traditional sense. It’s quite possible she was coerced into helping and may actually be a victim herself, ” Spencer said.
“Most importantly, this unsub is working according to a specific timetable,” Hotch explained.
“This timetable is corresponding with the Satanic calendar and his plans are to kidnap another victim of today,” Y/N said.
“Thank you.” Hotch’s words dismissed everyone.
----------
The room bustled as people were working on the case and other things. Y/N’s eyelids were heavy from the long day as the aimless chatter in the background made her sleepy. She reached over to her coffee cup, taking a large gulp of the warm liquid, praying that the caffeine would give her a boost of energy.
She looked at the photos Spencer held, her chair sliding closer to his so she could observe them closer, Spencer and the photos. The heat from his body radiating onto hers as she got close and she was able to be filled with his warm scent. Her eyes panned up to look at Spencer’s face, his brows furrowed in concentration as he looked at the white makeup on the faces of the victims.
“What’s got your wheels turning?” She asked him.
Spencer’s head turned to look at the woman next to him. He stuttered a bit as he formed his words,  not realizing she was this close to him. “I’m not sure, something about it--” he cut himself short as both his and Y/N’s attention turned to Rossi as he spoke to them.
“So, Garcia checked out everyone associated with that theater production of The Merry Wives of Windsor, they’re all in the clear.”
“The gowns have to be connected to the theater somehow, it can’t just be a coincidence,” JJ said.
“There’s something else that’s been bothering me, why is he putting white face makeup on his victims after they’re dead?” Spencer said, voicing his question to the group he almost said to Y/N a minute before.
“Isn’t that what they wore in the Elizabethan era?” Rossi asked.
“Yes, but only upper-class women wore white face makeup, it was a symbol of virginity and purity,” Spencer explained to the group.
“But he’s dressing them like characters in The Merry Wives of Windsor,” Y/N said as she followed Spencer’s train of thought.
“And that’s one of Shakespeare’s rare plays about the middle class,” Spencer added.
“So, it’s inconsistent.” JJ looked at Spencer as she waited for confirmation on her statement.
“The makeup could mean that he believes death is purifying them,” Hotch spoke.
“What if this is like the Salem Witch trials, where they’d test the girls by trying to drown them? Y/N said something to me earlier about how she had to write a paper on them, and it got me thinking,” Spencer said.
“If they died, it meant they were innocent, and if they somehow survived, they were considered witches and then hanged,” Y/N elaborated on what Spencer was saying.
“Wonderful, a lose-lose situation,” Rossi said.
“But the unsub didn’t submerge the victims in water to torture them, it was some sort of test?” JJ asked, looking over to Spencer.
“With death being the only possible outcome,” Spencer answered.
“Well, if he believes he’s killing witches, he probably thinks that he’s a vigilante or a protector against evil of some sort,” Hotch said.
“Laying the victims out the way he did could be a message to the devil,” JJ added.
“A symbol of victory and a warning, like putting a head on a spike.” Rossi looked down from his standing position to Y/N and Spencer who sat next to each other. Y/N then looked at Spencer, her mind thinking the same thing as him as Rossi’s word’s made him pause.
“He’s not worshipping the devil,” Y/N said with realization.
“He’s trying to fight him.” Spencer looked over to Y/N as he finished what she was saying.
“So we have an unsub who’s challenging the devil, this could not get any more strange,” Y/n said.
-----------
“Missing woman is Sarah Gammon, she’s a 27-year-old graphic artist, to pick her up for her weekly breakfast together, she wasn’t there,” the detective said, walking into the room.
It was the next morning, the team only getting a couple of hours of sleep after the long night they had before.
“Where was she last seen?” Rossi asked.
“At a nightclub in Portland, the, uh, Mirage Room.” The detective stuttered as he tried to remember the name. “She went with a girlfriend who had to leave early.
“Morgan and I will check it out,” Rossi said as he exited the room.
As Rossi left the room, Hotch’s phone rang.
“Okay, so I did some varsity-level sleuthing,” Penelope said as soon as Hotch answered the phone. “And it turns out the costumes were donated to the theater by a young actress named Cate Harris. She was in their production of The Merry Wives of Windsor 16 years ago, which was the only other time that the play was produced there.”
“Where is she now?” Y/N asked.
“Oh, I was hoping you would ask because I have the answer,” Penelope spoke with excitement. “She died in 1998 in the fire at St. Baldwins psychiatric hospital.”
“I revoke my statement from last night on this getting weirder,” Y/N whispered to herself.
“Was she a patient there?” JJ asked.
“Oh, most definitely. And some say that she set the fire.”
“Garcia, can you get her medical records?” Hotch asked the woman.
“Yeah, I tried to do that, but it turns out that the new director of St. Baldwin's was a technophobe hyper-Luddite like our Dr. Reid, and he only wanted the psych records to be on paper to protect confidentiality,” Penelope explained.
“Okay.” Hotch picked up his phone and hung it up, then pocketing it. “Detective, we need you to get a copy of those records.”
“You got it,” the detective said, turning to walk out of the room.
-----------------
The navy jacket was wrapped tightly around Y/N’s torso as her, Emily and JJ walked to the storage unit of St. Baldwins that lay beneath the asylum. They were stopped outside the unit as the caretaker unlocked it.
“Apparently, the state would have to pay for a new storage facility if they moved the records,” the detective explained as to why the unit stayed here. “Someone decided, why bother if the old place works?”
The three women nodded their heads as they heard the clanking of the lock coming off of the door. The caretaker opened the door, the creaking sound giving an eerie feeling to the air.
“Ladies.” The detective motioned his hands in a welcome motion as the three walked closer to the unit.
“No electricity, I take it,” Emily said as she noticed the absence of light.
“You would be correct,” the detective said from behind the three.
Y/N and Emily sighed, both of them pulling flashlights from their pockets as the entered the room. As Y/N walked through the room, her eyes followed the flashlight’s glow as she pointed it at all the different shelves. The creepy feel from the room made her on edge as she looked for the files they were looking for.
“Hey, I think I found it.” Y/N jumped slightly, not expecting to hear a voice jump in the quiet room.
She made her way over to Emily, JJ and the detective joining her as they looked over the report in Emily’s hand.
“Yeah, oh- first of all, Cate Harris was a stage name for Catherine Heathridge, a textile heiress. Her family kept the pseudonym for her medical admission to protect their privacy,” Emily explained as she read through the file.
Y/N picked up another file from the stack that was labeled ‘Cate Harris’. “According to the intake report,” she said as she began to read the file. “Catherine was an aspiring actress who went off her psychiatric medications when she was pregnant with her daughter. She had a minor part in The Merry Wives of Windsor 16 years ago when she became floridly psychotic. She was convinced the other actresses were the devil’s wives, so she stabbed one of them.”
“Is that when she was admitted here?” JJ asked.
“No, not yet,” Emily said as she looked at the report over Y/N’s shoulder.
“It looks like she had a son and a daughter. After she fled the theater--” Y/N gasped as her eyes gazed over the next line, handing the file to Emily as she wasn’t able to say what the woman did out loud. “You can finish it.”
“After fleeing the theater, she chopped off the left arm of her infant daughter,” Emily finished as she took the file from Y/N’s hand.
“Why would she do that?” The detective asked, voice stoic.
“To make the childless appealing to the devil,” Y/N said as she looked up to JJ and Emily. Her head previously resting in her hand.
“She believed that killing the devil’s wives was her mission on earth, which is what our unsub is doing now,” Emily explained.
“But she died in the asylum fire,” the detective stated.
“Someone else must be carrying out her mission,” JJ said.
“And I bet you it’s the son,” Y/N said, the gut feeling being present as she said her words to the others.
---------------
Y/N sat at the table while she told Spencer, Hotch, and Rossi about what they had discovered at the asylum. Her head resting on her hand as she looked up at the three men.
“If someone’s carrying on in Catherine’s mission, then it’s quite possible they both suffered from folie a deux, a shared psychotic disorder between two people who are extremely close and that would mean it’s most likely a family member,” Spencer explained after Y/N had told them all they found.
“It’s the son.” Y/N’s voice spoke in a sing-song tone under her breath.
“Maybe one or both of her kids,” Rossi stated.
“Garcia, I need you to find everything you can on the Heathridge family, specifically Catherine’s son and daughter,” Hotch ordered Penelope when she picked up her phone.
“Okay, finding it as we speak…” she trailed off as she began to look for what Hotch was asking. “Bingo, Catherine, a wealthy textile heiress, had a son: James, now twenty-six and a daughter Lara, now sixteen. Father died in a speedboat accident right before Lara was born. They were raised by their grandfather in a mansion outside Portland after their mom was committed.”
“Is the grandfather still alive?” Hotch asked.
“No, he died last year,” Penelope answered.
“That could have been the stressor,” Spencer thought aloud.
“Penelope, where are the kids living now?” Y/N asked.
“James was kicked out of a seminary in Colorado three years ago, but that’s still his listed address. Lara dropped out of school six weeks ago, coincidentally on her birthday and the family home is her listed address, and I’m sending you pictures...now.”
Photos of the house and kids appeared on the tablet screen. Y/N stood up and walked over next to Rossi as he clicked on the picture of the son.
“That could be him, the man at the night club who left with Sarah Gammon,” Rossi said as he inspected the picture.
“All right, contact the seminary,” Hotch said, looking at Spencer and Rossi. “Garcia, I’m gonna need an address, Y/N let’s go.” Hotch nodded for Y/N to follow him as he began to walk out of the room.
“Yes, sir,” she responded and followed him.
“Be safe.” Spencer’s words made Y/N turn back and give him a reassuring smile that said, I always am.
“Whipped,” Rossi said, covering it up with a cough as he walked away to grab his phone. Spencer just looked at the man confused, but simply went back to his work.
---------
The cars pulled up to the manor. Sirens turned off so that they still maintained the element of surprise. They piled out of the vehicles, JJ, Emily, and Derek joining Hotch and Y/N back at the station.
“Morgan, you and JJ take the back, we’ll take the front,” Hotch said.
JJ and Derek nodded and made their way around back, while Y/N, Hotch, and Emily stayed upfront.
Y/N examined the front of the house. It wasn’t a manor in the traditional sense, it had more of a woodsy feel to its exterior.
“You see that?” Emily asked Hotch and Y/N.
Y/N looked back up at the house, finally noticing what Emily was talking about. “There’s a girl in the window.”
“All right, you check up there-” Hotch nodded to Emily. “Me and Y/N will look for James.”
Emily nodded as they took off into the house, Y/N and Hotch separating from Emily as she headed up the stairs.
Hotch pushed the door to the kitchen open, turning quickly to his right and Y/N to the left. The darkrooms they entered were only lit by the flashlights. They walked through the rooms slowly, only separating for a second to go into two different sides of the room.
Y/N walked down the steps to the basement first, Hotch now behind her as he followed closely. The basement was cold, damp, and slightly lit through the windows by the moonlight. Y/N’s heart pounded in her ears, one foot in front of the other as she moved down the steps. Her light shined as she saw the body of the missing girl on the ground by what appeared to be well.
Y/N felt a sharp pain hit her hip. She groaned as she fell to the ground, her hand clutching her hip as she felt the bruise already forming.
Hotch also let out a groan as he was hit in the legs, his gun, and flashlight sliding across the ground.
Y/N looked up to see James get tackled by Hotch and shoved into a wall. James head-butted Hotch giving him a second to go over and try to hit Y/N while Hotch stumbled back.
James brought a fire-poker around from his left side, but before he could hit Y/N with it, she kicked it out of his hand. She pushed herself up onto her feet and got a quick, hard punch in to throw him off. This allowed Hotch to grab him and shove him back to a wall. The two threw punches back and forth before Hotch pulled him away and tried to push him into the ground.
Hotch had him off his guard and he began to push him towards the well. When James fought back and punched Hotch, Y/N came over and gave a hard kick to James’ chest.
James stumbled back, the kick was just enough to send him falling onto the edge of the well. When he came back up and lurched for Hotch again, clearly being his focus, Hotch was quick to throw him back, having him fall into the well this time.
Y/N stood next to Hotch as they looked down into the deep well, James’ body laying at the bottom.
“Teamwork.” Y/N huffed the word as she looked at Hotch who just shook his head and the two made their way out of the basement.
“You’re bleeding, better get that looked at,” Hotch said, pointing to Y/N eyebrow that was in fact bleeding from when she hit the ground.
When they reached outside, Hotch told the paramedics where James was and made Y/N get looked at after her many protests.
“I’m fine, seriously.” Her protests did not make him change his mind.
 “That’s an order.”
Y/N now stood with Derek as a paramedic put some butterfly bandages on the cut after accessing it was only a superficial cut.
“You good wonder woman?” Derek asked, the nickname from the previous day sticking.
“Oh yeah, you should see the other guy.” Her joke, cliche as it was, made Derek chuckle anyway as he turned to Emily as she approached.
“So, Lara is gonna be okay,” Emily said, walking over to the rest of them. “She confirmed that the bodies were left out as messages to the devil.”
“Well, her brother’s dead, so what happens to her now?” Derek asked.
“There’s always foster care,” the detective answered.
“For an heiress?” Y/N said the paramedic finished with her face and had moved on to the ambulance.
“Yeah, I don’t think so,” JJ agreed.
“There will be guardians and trustees coming out of the woodworks before she gets put into foster care,” Y/N said, making her teammates chuckle.
“So she’ll end up back here, in a house that breeds delusions,” the detective said, looking back to the house.
 “Hopefully not,” Hotch spoke.
-------------
“Okay, okay, what is the best book you have ever read?” The question made Spencer ponder.
Y/N and Spencer sat in a booth at a diner in D.C., the table holding breakfast foods for the late-night date. The warm glow that surrounded the two made all their worries vanish, their attention only on the other.
“That’s a hard one, I’ve read so many.” His thumb and pointer finger lined his jaw as he placed his head between the two. “I mean, I guess fiction might have to be one of Dickens works.”
Y/N nodded her head, her legs pulled up in the seat and she sat with her back to the wall. Spencer began going on about Oliver Twist and Y/N was listening intently to every word he spoke. Watching how his lips would move faster as he began to get excited about something he was saying, or the way his voice would go an octave higher when his hands moved as he spoke. A smile played on her lips as she listened to him as he went on.
She was so engrossed in her own mind of watching him that she didn’t even notice he asked her a question until his lips stopped moving.
 “Sorry, what?”
“I said, do you have a favorite work by Dickens?” He repeated his question with a laugh.
“Oh, probably Great Expectations, but I’m more of a fan of Poe, more than anything,” she answered. Her legs moved under the table as she sat facing Spencer in the both.
“For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams, of the beautiful Annabel Lee,” Spencer quoted the poem, Anabel Lee. A smile formed on his as he watched a bashful blush on Y/N’s cheeks.
The simple poem about a tormented, beautiful young love never failed to have Y/N swoon. In high school, Anabel Lee was the poem she would read repeatedly in her textbook. The words she could quote by heart only sounded so sweeter coming from Spencer’s lips.
“I’ve always been a fan of dark romanticism,” she spoke. “This case we just had, reminded of something out of a book though if I’m being honest.” She brought her milkshake straw up to her lips, taking a sip of the creamy liquid.
“It was an odd one,” Spencer agreed.
Y/M hummed, her lips still wrapped around the straw. She pulled her eyes off Spencer to look out the window. She watched as people walked by, couples holding hands, men getting home from their offices late, but one stood out to her.
From a distance, about fifty yards across the street, a dark-haired man stood, staring at Y/N and Spencer out the window. She had no idea who this man was, but it made her stomach drop as she got a bad feeling.
“Spencer I think we should go home now,” she spoke calmly.
He furrowed his brows in confusion. “Okay, any reason why?”
“Because there is a man out there who has been staring at us for I don’t know how long, and I don’t want to deal with it anymore.” She stood up from her seat in the booth, wrapping her navy jacket around her body.
Spencer did the same as he stood up and walked next to her out of the building. “Do you think it has anything to do with--”
 “I have no clue--”
 “Could it?”
“I don’t know, let's just go back to your place, it’s closer.” So, that’s what they did. Spencer grabbed Y/N’s hand protectively and led her down the street while she kept her head down. The man’s face still in her thoughts, no expressions, just stoic and unsettling. His face was almost calm, seemingly normal to an untrained eye, but she knew. She could only hope this had nothing to do with Caroline and she was simply overreacting.

We gather here, we line up, weepin' in a sunlit room And if I'm on fire, you'll be made of ashes, too Even on my worst day, did I deserve, babe All the hell you gave me? 'Cause I loved you, I swear I loved you 'Til my dying day I didn't have it in myself to go with grace And you're the hero flying around, saving face And if I'm dead to you, why are you at the wake? Cursing my name, wishing I stayed Look at how my tears ricochet We gather stones, never knowing what they'll mean Some to throw, some to make a diamond ring You know I didn't want to have to haunt you But what a ghostly scene You wear the same jewels that I gave you As you bury me
And I can go anywhere I want Anywhere I want, just not home And you can aim for my heart, go for blood But you would still miss me in your bones And I still talk to you (When I'm screaming at the sky) And when you can't sleep at night (You hear my stolen lullabies)
Rosalie would sing this to her murderer/fiancé at her funeral as he goes around being the ‘hero’ and ‘saving face’. She’s ‘screaming at the sky’ because he has stolen the one thing she really wanted from her ‘anywhere I want, just not home’. Even though she loved him ‘til [her] dying day’, she can never forgive and has no choice but to haunt him.

exile - Edward in New Moon
Tumblr media
I think I’ve seen this film before And I didn’t like the ending You’re not my homeland anymore So what am I defending now? You were my town, now I’m in exile seein’ you out We always walked a very thin line You didn’t even hear me out (You didn’t even hear me out) You never gave a warning sign (I gave so many signs) All this time I never learned to read your mind (Never learned to read my mind)
Edward leaves in New Moon because he believes he and his world are too dangerous for Bella, exiling himself indefinitely. They had ‘always walked a very thin line’ as he tried to be with her without harming her, and he literally ‘never learned to read [her] mind’. Now he’s left and can’t do what he wanted to do, i.e protect her (’what am I defending now?’).
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
august - Jacob
Tumblr media
Salt air, and the rust on your door I never needed anything more Whispers of “Are you sure?” “Never have I ever before”
Back when we were still changin' for the better Wanting was enough For me, it was enough To live for the hope of it all Canceled plans just in case you'd call And say, "Meet me behind the mall" So much for summer love and saying "us" 'Cause you weren't mine to lose You weren't mine to lose, no
Your back beneath the sun Wishin' I could write my name on it Will you call when you're back at school? I remember thinkin' I had you
Bella and Jacob start spending time together in the ‘salt air’ by La Push beach fixing beaten-up motorbikes (’rust’). Jacob knows Bella isn’t interested in him but lives in hope (’to live for the hope of it all’) and by the time the Cullens come back he’s convinced he could win Bella’s loyalties (’I remember thinkin’ I had you’). It doesn’t take place in summer, but it is a brief, intense fling that lifts Bella from her Edward-induced winter, and Bella calls Jacob her personal ‘sun’. In the end, though, Bella tells Jacob that there was never really a choice between him and Edward; it was always going to be Edward (’You weren’t mine to lose’).
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
invisible string - Alice & Jasper
Tumblr media
And isn't it just so pretty to think All along there was some Invisible string Tying you to me?
Something wrapped all of my past mistakes in barbed wire Chains around my demons Wool to brave the seasons One single thread of gold Tied me to you
Alice woke up as a vampire with no memory of her past - all she had was her psychic abilities, which were an ‘invisible string’ leading her directly to Jasper. On Jasper’s side, he was living a brutal life training newborn armies until Alice found him and ‘wrapped all of [his] past mistakes in barbed wire’, putting ‘chains around his demons’ and leading him to a better life. You could also interpret it as his journey to chaining his inner monster that wants to kill humans when he goes to live with the Cullens.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
epiphany - Carlisle
Tumblr media
Something med school did not cover Someone's daughter, someone's mother Holds your hand through plastic now "Doc, I think she's crashing out" And some things you just can't speak about
Only twenty minutes to sleep But you dream of some epiphany Just one single glimpse of relief To make some sense of what you've seen
This song describes the experience of medical staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Carlisle was a doctor during the last major pandemic (Spanish Flu in 1918), which is where he turned Edward. A religious man, he searches for an ‘epiphany’ from God while he grapples with the decision to consign another person to a life of vampirism and tries to understand whether or not he still has a soul.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
mad woman - Rosalie
Tumblr media
Do you see my face in the neighbor's lawn? Does she smile? Or does she mouth, "Fuck you forever"? And there's nothing like a mad woman What a shame she went mad No one likes a mad woman You made her like that And you'll poke that bear 'til her claws come out And you find something to wrap your noose around
They say “move on” but you know I won’t
I'm taking my time, taking my time 'Cause you took everything from me
Rosalie is filled with anger and bitterness over her murder. She’s cast in a bad light particularly because she’s an angry, ‘mad woman’ but she explains that her murderers ‘made her like that’ when they ‘took everything from [her]’, and in return she ‘[took her] time’ when killing them to make sure they knew she was coming.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
cardigan - Bella on Jacob
Tumblr media
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan, under someone’s bed  You put me on and said I was your favorite  You drew stars around my scars But now I’m bleedin’
Bella was destroyed after Edward left, feeling that he’d taken most of her with him and was just discarded like an unwanted toy (’I felt like I was an old cardigan, under someone’s bed’). Then she started hanging out with Jacob and his friendship (’I was your favorite’) started to heal - or at least disguise - the hole in her chest (’You drew stars around my scars’). But then he left, too, when the werewolf transformation happened, which left her ‘bleeding’. It turned out she wasn’t really healed, she’d just been papering over the gap with Jacob’s love.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
illicit affairs - Edward & Bella as tragic fated lovers
Tumblr media
Tell yourself you can always stop What started in beautiful rooms  Ends in meetings in parking lots It’s born from just one single glance but it dies and it dies and it dies A million little times
Leave no trace behind, like they don’t even exist
When Edward first becomes enamored with Bella and wants to get closer to her, he convinces himself he can always stop - but he can’t. The more time he spends with her, the more doomed he is. When Bella gets hurt because of him, first in Twilight and then in New Moon, he disappears in hopes of keeping her safe and hides all the presents he gave her (’leave no trace behind’).
And you wanna scream Don't call me "kid," don't call me "baby" Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me You showed me colors you know I can't see with anyone else Don't call me "kid," don't call me "baby" Look at this idiotic fool that you made me You taught me a secret language I can't speak with anyone else
A dwindling mercurial high A drug that only worked the first few hundred times
And you know damn well For you, I would ruin myself A million little times
This part is Bella’s response. When he left, he took away this entire paranormal world he’d introduced her to (‘You taught me a secret language I can’t speak with anyone else’), leaving her to think she’s gone insane because not only has she lost the love of her life, all traces of an entire extra world have disappeared. She wants him to stop patronising her by saying she’ll move on like mortals do (’Don’t call me kid, don’t call me baby, look at this godforsaken mess that you made me’). Desperate to get some sense that he’s still there, she starts doing risky stunts like motorbike racing and jumping off a cliff (’A dwindling mercurial high’). Like she told him in the meadow scene in the first book, she is willing to die for him, and we see in New Moon that he feels the same way (‘you know damn well / For you I would ruin myself, a million little times’). The only way for them to stay apart would’ve been to never meet in the first place.

seven - Rosalie on her childhood friend Vera
Tumblr media
Please picture me in the trees I hit my peak at seven Feet in the swing over the creek I was too scared to jump in But I, I was high in the sky With Pennsylvania under me Are there still beautiful things? Sweet tea in the summer Cross your heart, won't tell no other And though I can't recall your face I still got love for you Your braids like a pattern Love you to the Moon and to Saturn Passed down like folk songs The love lasts so long
Before I learned civility I used to scream ferociously Any time I wanted
Rosalie fondly recalls her human life and her best friend Vera, who had the normal life she never got. This ‘love lasts so long’ even though Vera is dead by now because Rosalie still remembers her, even if her human memories are fuzzy and she can’t necessarily ‘recall [her] face’. Also, Rosalie was always valued only for her beauty, but maybe she ‘hit [her] peak at seven’ because her beauty hadn’t yet started overshadowing her personhood and she was still able to ‘scream ferociously’ at that age instead of being the girl and young woman who had to learn ‘civility’ and be married off to a rich man.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
hoax - Bella in New Moon
Tumblr media
My only one My smoking gun My eclipsed sun This has broken me down My twisted knife My sleepless night My winless fight This has frozen my ground Stood on the cliffside screaming, "Give me a reason" Your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in Don't want no other shade of blue but you No other sadness in the world would do  My best laid plan Your sleight of hand My barren land I am ash from your fire  You know I left a part of me back in New York You knew the hero died so what's the movie for? You knew it still hurts underneath my scars From when they pulled me apart
Bella’s ‘eclipsed sun’ has disappeared and left her ‘broken’, ‘sleepless’ and believing she has no way to win him back. She literally goes and stands on a ‘cliffside’ before jumping off just to see a hallucination of his face - Edward, a mythical creature, is the ‘only hoax she believes in’. Even though he’s hurt her and broken her heart, she ‘don’t want no other shade of blue but you’. He thinks he’s saving her from harm by leaving, but the scar from James still bothers her, i.e. his leaving cannot protect her as the damage has been done (’You know it still hurts underneath my scars’) and now Edward has just added emotional scars that ‘pulled [her] apart’ and left a gaping hole in her chest.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
peace - Edward & Bella in Breaking Dawn
Tumblr media
I never had the courage of my convictions As long as danger is near And it’s just around the corner darlin Coz it lives in me No, I could never give you peace
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
Throughout the series, Edward has been afraid to get too close to Bella for fear of hurting her (’danger is near’, ‘it lives in me’). Now he finally has to accept that she’s not going anywhere and value her choice. Even after he’s no longer a threat to her directly, their life is full of challenges like the Volturi. It’s impossible to guarantee her safety, and she doesn’t want him to - she wants to be in his world as an equal. He comes to terms with the fact that it’s okay if he can ‘never give [her] peace’.

Wellesley Underground Interview with Founders (Sara Hess ‘08 and Shavanna Calder ‘08) of Feminist Fashion & Beauty Magazine, MUJER!
Need a break from the politics? Dive into the making of Issue No.2 of MUJER! Magazine. Interview by Camylle Fleming ‘14.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Wellesley Underground (WU): Tell us about the origin of MUJER! Magazine and bring us up to speed on the November launch.
Sara Hess ‘08, Editor in Chief: MUJER! has been a long time coming for us. Ever since Shavanna and I were swapping clothes from each other’s closets when we were roommates at Wellesley, we’ve had an interest in fashion and over the years we’d often played around with the idea of doing a fashion related project together. MUJER! came about in late 2017 when I had reached a point of being really frustrated with fashion magazines (all of the ads and the Photoshop, the lack of any real content and focus on hyper consumption). I also was disappointed to see that several of the fashion bloggers I’d followed over the years and enjoyed for their authenticity were following the same route as they transitioned from blogs to Instagram and started posting highly stylized Photoshopped pics that were all sponsored and very phony. Finally, I had recently turned 30 and it then occurred to me that I was older than nearly all the models I saw in the major fashion publications, which is insane when you think about it. I told Shavanna what I was thinking of doing-- a feminist fashion and beauty mag, all models 25+, no Photoshop on their faces or bodies, more racial and ethnic diversity, a focus on more sustainable production and consumption and no ads. Shavanna is an amazing stylist and has a great eye for design so I was super excited when she agreed to be creative director. I was living between Mexico City and New York at the time. I had developed some contacts in the fashion industry in Mexico and really admired the fashion scene there, which is one of the reasons we went with the name MUJER! It took us about 6-7 months to produce the content for the first print edition which was published in September 2018.
2.WU: How did fashion and beauty become sites of contestation and rebellion for you two?
Sara: I grew up in a small town in rural Pennsylvania and was constantly getting in trouble for breaking the dress code at my public school. It’s ironic because I was definitely a major nerd-- not your typical rebel. In junior high, I was really upset to find out I had not been accepted to the National Junior Honor Society. I asked one of my teachers why and he told me that it was because the shorts that I wore to school were often too short. Honestly, it was not my intention to be risque. I was just awkwardly going through puberty and had legs that were too long for my body and it was impossible to find shorts that were long enough and didn’t look dorky. After that, I went through a punk rocker phase, where again clothing is a form of rebellion. I was totally into the early Gwen Stefani punk looks. I would get picked on a lot by classmates but then a few months later everyone would be wearing what I had been wearing before, which would be my cue to change styles because I never wanted to look like everyone else. For me, it became a way to stand out and to push back against conservative influences.
Shavanna Calder ‘08, Creative Director: I can’t say that I’ve thought of fashion for most of my life as a site of rebellion. I just wore what I liked and (especially as a kid) what was on trend.
I had hip surgery 5 years ago and have struggled to be able to wear heels after that. In some ways that forced me to rethink how to dress for formal situations (without heels). Though I am working towards wearing heels again through physical therapy (my profession requires it), I’ve found a certain level of pride in showing other women that we can still look dressed up/professional etc. without wearing heels. Also embracing flatforms has been fun!
I think beauty, more so, has always been a site of contestation and rebellion for me as a Black woman. Growing up and having hair that was different than most of my friends. Makeup and hair supplies that we had to drive an extra distance for. Reading different magazines than my friends because teen vogue (at that time), seventeen etc never catered to me (thank God for Essence). Now, being natural, my hair oftentimes is a point of rebellion/contestation as I educate and ask for the things that I need as a Black artist instead of accepting the burden of sitting in silence.

3. WU: On social media, you’ve discussed the initiative of “showing women as they actually exist in the world”. Can you describe some of the images you two grew up with and how they are in conversation with MUJER!
Shavanna: In some ways growing up when I did, I feel like I did get to see images of women (more often) without photoshop and a ton of contouring etc because that just wasn’t on trend. It’s one thing I miss about the early 2000’s. That being said, the rest of the content oftentimes centered around ways to get men, look flirty etc etc. For us I think “showing women as they actually exist in the world” goes beyond imaging to the content of the magazine (the stories and issues that are discussed) as well as the lack of harmful ads encouraging women to alter their bodies by buying certain products etc. We are able to highlight a diverse group of female identifying folx and the complexity of us instead of the monolith that I often see portrayed.
4. WU: What are the ways in which your Mexico City base contributes to the core principles of MUJER!
Sara: Mexico City is just my heart and soul. I don’t know how else to describe it. It makes me turn to mush as though I’m talking about someone I’m in love with. The creative and design scene here is out of this world funky and unique and I really feel that I can wear anything going out here at night. People are elegant and cool and put a great deal of thought into how they present themselves. The fashion scene is authentic and fun and nowhere near as pretentious as it is in other parts of the world. We try to reflect this creativity and sincerity in MUJER! as well.
Shavanna: Additionally I’ll say that people have really embraced us there. There is an openness, flexibility and sense of collaboration that has made it super easy to throw any ideas we have out there and run with it (more than I’ve seen in other parts of the world).
5. WU: For those of us who are new to publication production, can you walk us through the steps of creating content, finding models, artwork, all without the filler of advertisements?
Sara: We are also new to magazine production, ha! We started by basically bringing together people we knew from the fashion world here in Mexico City. I have a dear friend, Jenny. She’s a stylist from Sweden and was working on the sets of reality shows here so she kind of kicked me into gear to do the first beauty shoot. She had a lot of experience doing shoots so she helped me get a great photographer and scout a location and models. We’ve really been blessed with meeting all of the right people at the right moment. We found a wonderful lead graphic designer, Celina Arrazola who happened to know the neighborhood where all the printers are and was an expert in hand binding books. Advertisements were never an option so we self-finance the production, which was and is intense.
Shavanna: Yes, as Sara mentioned we’re incredibly new to this and are (honestly) still figuring a lot out as we go. However, generally we come up with ideas/stories together that excite us, that we haven’t seen in other fashion magazines. We then reach out to female identifying folx to help us realize these ideas (because we want to support female entrepreneurs as well). The hardest part will be figuring out how to make it sustainable (and take the more of the financial burden off of Sara) and we’re in the process of sorting that out the best way we can!
5a. WU: Okay, same question. Add COVID, go:
Sara: Now, because of COVID, our plans to do another print edition were derailed so we decided to do a digital edition-- everyone featured sent in their own photos and instead of printing we created a PDF version of the magazine, with Celina’s excellent graphic design of course.
It essentially made printing the way we did with the first edition impossible. That was a very manual process that involved visiting the printer in person multiple times and Celina handbound the magazine, with me struggling to be useful to her by folding the pages. This time we went all digital.
Shavanna: In addition we had to become creative since we could no longer conduct shoots or interviews in person. Everything was done via email (except for Sultana’s shoot which happened pre-COVID). All other photos were submitted by the women in the issue. Whilst I missed many aspects of being in person, in some ways the challenge allowed us to lean in to our mission of showing women as we truly are. It also allowed for us to have a remote intern via Wellesley which was awesome!
Tumblr media
6. WU: How do you want to grapple with the plurality of feminism(s) in the pages of the magazine?
Shavanna: By being truly intentional about seeking out diverse voices. By celebrating those voices and by taking our readers feedback to heart. Outside of the folx who are interviewed or featured in our magazine we attempt to employ women in the creation of the physical product as well (design, photography etc). The end result is something that has been touched by women from various parts of the world and from different walks of life.
7. WU: Can you share the story of how the magazine gained its title? How do you respond to any pushback and claims of appropriation from Latinx individuals for your usage of the word “Mujer”?
Sara: For starters, we were founded in Mexico City and at least half of our readers are native Spanish speakers. The publication, like many of its readers, is also bilingual. For the interviews and articles that are originally done in Spanish, we leave them in Spanish, only translating key quotes into English and vice versa for pieces that are originally in English. The title is also a global call to women that goes beyond the English-language paradigm.
8.WU: The fashion and beauty industry can carry both an air of superficiality and apoliticism. Tell us what people get wrong about the experience of working within it.
Sara: I think this is hard for us to get into because we are not really working in the fashion and beauty industry-- we are working parallel to it and trying to pick the piece we enjoy while also creating something new and different for women that makes them feel empowered, not inadequate.
Shavanna: Yes neither Sara nor I really work within the industry (nor have we prior to the magazine). I’ve worked as a stylist from time to time, but that’s about it. For the most part we’ve been consumers who were unhappy with what we were consuming and figured we could do something about it.
9. WU: In an effort to not over-glorify the value of success and “making it”, let’s talk about failure. Can you share with our readers what went wrong in the process of producing MUJER!?
Sara: Before our Chilanga shoot, Shavanna and I got horrible food poisoning. Like, nearly had to go to the hospital.
Shavanna: Yes we were living on pepto bismol and had just started eating plain bread and pasta the day of our shoot, but we powered through! Honestly this magazine has felt like a contribution to society that we were meant to be a part of, so despite obstacles that have come up, we know that we can’t be sidetracked.
Tumblr media
10. WU: How do you react to the “self-care” trend and it’s correlation to the consumption of beauty products? Relatedly, how do you two take care of yourselves?
Sara: I’m an introvert who fakes being an extrovert, but I definitely know I need alone time so I try to make space for that. As of late, I try to use more natural/ organic beauty products and just less of everything period. Also sleep. Sleep is so important. Finally, I’ve decided I will deal with drama in my professional life because I feel like that’s where I’m making a contribution that’s important but I try to minimize drama in my personal life as much as possible.
Shavanna: I try to take care of myself by reminding myself that rest is ok and necessary (so hard). Practicing my faith/meditation. Asking for what I need. Going to therapy (physical and mental health). Exercising. Connecting with loved ones (friends and family). Being kind to myself.
11. WU: As a follower of your Insta page, I find myself lingering on your original posts, staring into the faces of the individuals you capture. It makes me realize how my brain has been trained to see the same faces featured in public spaces, so much so that they’ve become invisible. Can you share the favorite photos that you’ve captured and why they stand out to you?
Shavanna: My favorite photos are of Wellesley alumna Solonje Burnett. I’ve always admired Solonje’s fearlessness and creativity and I think we truly captured her essence in these. Though she is beautiful, the interview is about so much more and highlights her as the complex, multifaceted woman that she is (instead of just her beauty routine or what her house looks like).
12. WU: What does the day in the life of an Editor-in-Chief look like? How about a Creative Director?
Shavanna: We’re very collaborative. I don’t think we really have hard and fast rules as to who does what necessarily as much as it’s a partnership. One of us will propose an idea (in between juggling the rest of our lives) and we’ll discuss pros and cons and greenlight what works best and aligns with our values. We also just hold each other accountable. Right now there isn’t a typical day in the life as well just because we both have other jobs (though it would be amazing for Mujer! to continue to take off in a way that allowed us to devote more time to it).
Tumblr media
13. WU: Both of you currently have worked with higher education institutions (Harvard + NYU). Can you tell us a bit about your “day jobs” and the types of opportunities they have afforded you in relation to the Magazine?
Sara: While I was working at HBS, I co-authored a case study on Monocle magazine which has helped to inform some of our thinking around the business model for MUJER!
Shavanna: I worked for almost 7 years at NYU, first at Stern and then within the Faculty of Arts & Science. In terms of opportunities? I’d say actually, for me, anyway the two aren’t related. My time at NYU influenced my acting career more so than Mujer! by giving me some flexibility and certainly financial stability.
14. WU: Lastly - a question you ask your features in the upcoming digital issue: how have you been gentle with yourself during this time?
Sara: Uff, I have been eating a lot of ice cream and taking breaks when I need to. I turned off the New York Times news alerts on my phone. I still read the news everyday but this has helped a lot.
Shavanna: Uff indeed. Hm sometimes I remind myself that the fact that I’m functioning is enough. This quote from Audre Lorde has been getting me through: “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
Working out and going for walks, journaling, therapy, being in touch with my spirituality, limiting myself on social media (or at least certain groups or accounts), listening to my body in terms of what it wants (whether that be food or change of environment). Talking to friends when I have the energy always brightens my day and constantly reminding myself to take things one moment/day at a time. This is all incredibly hard and I’m grateful to those who have been gentle with me when I struggle to be gentle with myself.
Check out the MUJER! Covid-19 digital issue here: https://www.mujerrev.com/mujer-sale Given the increase in domestic violence and gender based violence around the world during the pandemic, a portion of the proceeds from the issue will go to two organizations helping womxn that are survivors of domestic abuse and human trafficking: Women of Color Network - Blue Lips Campaign and El Pozo de Vida.

Becoming Mike                      Chapter 3:  Wherever Here Is
Tumblr media
Chapter 1   Chapter 2   Read it on AO3
Mike woke up the next morning and immediately regretted all the wine he’d drunk the night before.  He knew what cured his hangovers, but it took all the mental toughness he had developed in the Special Forces to get himself out of bed and into running gear.  He wanted to stay in bed and sleep for another five hours.  Even more than that, he wanted to lay in bed and replay that kiss in his mind for another five hours.  Instead, he dragged himself out of bed, popped a couple of aspirin with a glass of water, and hit the streets.  Five miles later, he was a new man.
Physically, anyway.  He still couldn’t get Sonny Carisi out of his head.  In the shower, he imagined what might have happened if he hadn’t walked out the door when Sonny opened it; if he’d pushed it closed again and then been the one to back Sonny against the wall.  It was different than what he’d imagined when he’d gone to bed the night before, but he came just as hard as he had then.
When the squad got a report of a missing teenage boy that day, Mike wasn’t surprised when Sonny volunteered to go with him to interview the principal of the kid’s high school.  Mike had been looking for an opportunity to talk to Sonny alone, too.
They made awkward small talk for the first few blocks, but it was obvious what was on both their minds.
“So were you as hung over as I was this morning?”  Mike asked, trying to sound casual as he approached the subject of the night before.
“I love red wine.  I’m Italian, right?  But drink more than one glass, and I always regret it.  You don’t look like you’re hurtin’ too bad, though.”
“I took a run.  It helps. You sweat out all the shit.”
“What, you wake up feelin’ like dog meat, and your first instinct is to run?”
“Hell, no,” Mike laughed.  “It’s my last instinct, same as any normal person.  But it works.  Learned it in the military.”
“Well, no offense, but I’ll stick to my grandmother’s patented cure: Gatorade and toast.”
“Does it work?”
“Sure.  I feel great.”
“I’ll have to try it.  Hey, thanks again for listening to me whine.  Appreciate it.”
“Sure.”  Sonny squirmed a bit in his seat and looked out the passenger window.  “So, ah…  Are we OK?”
“Yeah.  Yeah, we’re good,” Mike answered quickly.
“’Cause I been tryin’ to wait for you,” Sonny continued.  “But there you were, in my apartment, and you were hurting, and you just looked so good…  I couldn’t help myself.”
It was very fortunate that they happened to be sitting at a red light at that moment, given Mike’s instant head swivel to look at Sonny incredulously.  “You’ve been waiting for me?”
Sonny blushed slightly and looked down at his feet, shuffling them and squirming adorably.  “Yeah, I mean…  I thought you might be interested, and I’m definitely interested, but…  I dunno.”
“You seemed pretty sure last night.”
“Yeah, well, I had a lot of wine last night,” Mike thought Sonny had never looked so cute as he did with a fierce blush and a shy smile.
The light turned green and Mike had to pay attention to driving again.
“Anyways,” Sonny stuttered, “I just wanted to, you know…  apologize, or…  explain…  I mean, I know it’s different for you.  You’re the one who’d be in trouble if we…  you know, dated.  And I don’t know how out you are.  I just wanna be clear here, because I like you.  I’m interested, and it seems like you are, too.  But I get it if you want to just forget it happened.”
Mike sighed lightly, twisting his lips as he tried to figure out what to say.  “I don’t wanna forget it happened, Carisi.  Couldn’t if I tried.  It was…  I mean, yeah, I’m attracted to you and I… really wanted to kiss you.”
He stole a quick glance at Sonny, still wearing that little smile.  “Seemed like it,” Sonny said.
“But there are a hundred reasons we can’t…  I can’t.  So, it can’t happen again, but I’m glad it happened once.”
They shared a nice moment, just smiling at each other.
“A hundred reasons?  I can only think of one.  Maybe two.  What are the other ninety-eight?”
“Gimme a break, Carisi.  Reasons one and two are plenty.”
“Yeah.  Yeah, they are.  But I think maybe…”
“What?”
“Nothin’.  It’s none of my business.  You’re gonna turn left at the next block.”
Mike wondered what Sonny had been about to say, but decided to leave well enough alone.  He wished he felt more sure of the reasons he’d given Sonny for not pursuing a relationship. He wished he felt more sure that he was even capable of keeping a professional distance.  It wasn’t the first time he’d had a thing for a coworker, but it had never even approached the level of distraction or temptation he was experiencing now.  And he’d certainly been attracted to other men, but this, with Sonny, seemed all-consuming.  Mike was starting to become concerned about what could happen, because he was starting to become a little afraid of what he wanted to happen.  Where Sonny was concerned, everything seemed completely new. Unfamiliar.  Exciting and terrifying in equal measure.
Trying to locate the missing teenager ended up involving quite a bit more travelling than any of the squad were used to.  Between the trip to a ski lodge in Vermont and another to a cabin in Pennsylvania, Mike had way too much time to sit and think.  About Sonny, especially.  But also about SVU.  Olivia Benson didn’t seem to be very good at having a Sergeant.  Instead, she dismissed his ideas and attempts to take some of the work off her plate and made him, essentially, just another detective. Which was not what he was there for. That thought naturally led him to wonder what his father was going to have to say about that.  Mike wasn’t looking forward to a lecture on taking more initiative.  Sometimes he really wished Matthew was around to shoulder some of their father’s plans and expectations.
The team did find and rescue the teenage boy two days later, but not before the pedophile wrestling coach had drugged and assaulted him. Worse, the case took a dark and nasty turn when one of the perp’s former students, another of his victims, kidnapped and tortured a confession out of him.  Worst of all, the torture had involved stabbing the coach, who died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.  Which meant that the pedophile’s abuse had shattered the kid’s life and driven him to commit a horrendous act in a desperate attempt to try to reclaim himself, but instead, he would now go to prison, possibly for the rest of his life. The rapist never faced justice, and the victim’s life was now over.
Sonny took it hard.  Because of who he was, Sonny was especially sickened when trusted authority figures abused that trust to victimize helpless kids.  He hated seeing this scumbag coach get off so easy, and was even more incensed that one of his victims was going to be charged with first-degree murder.  Nothing he could say to ADA O’Dwyer made a dent.  He raged, he urged, he argued and wheedled, reminding O’Dwyer over and over that, with all his experience with teenage offenders, he should have had more empathy with the guy.  Instead, O’Dwyer simply repeated that it was up to the jury to decide his punishment. Sonny threw up his hands, sputtering in protest, almost too angry to be coherent.
Mike put an arm around him and led him away before he could get physical with O’Dwyer.  That didn’t seem like something Sonny Carisi would do, but he was angrier than Dodds had ever seen him.
“Get him out of here,” Liv growled quietly to Mike.  “Give him a beer, let him vent, but let’s not have him punching out an ADA.”
“Copy that, Lieu.”
Had Mike had time to think about it, he would have been very hesitant to go anywhere alone with Sonny, particularly to a bar.  But he found himself outside the station five minutes later, hailing a cab with still-furious Sonny in tow.  Mike told the cabbie to take them to Steve’s Place.
For a very long time, Mike just sat and listened to Sonny. Sometimes vitriolic rant, sometimes near-tearful, frustrated gripe, Sonny’s outcry of protest was eventually exhausted.  He got up from the small, high table where he and Mike had been huddled together for over an hour and went to get their third beers.  Mike watched him, relieved that Sonny seemed to have been able to release some of the bitter rage he’d come in with.  He couldn’t help but notice how Sonny moved, how beautiful his hands were, how the slightest hint of silver had started to highlight his hair at the temples… He was really insanely good looking, Mike thought.  No wonder he was helplessly obsessed.
Setting the beers on the table and climbing back into his chair, Sonny said, “I bet you’re tired of hearin’ me whine, huh?”
Mike extended the neck of his bottle toward Sonny, who clinked it with his.  “You did it for me just a few days ago.  You warned me it would be your turn next.”
Sonny grinned feebly.  “Yeah.  I guess. Let’s talk about somethin’ else. I thought I heard you tell Fin you play the guitar.”
Mike huffed a small laugh.  “Something like that.  I used to want to be Springsteen.”
“No kiddin’.  You ever play in a band or anything?”
“Several.”
“No shit!  I play a little, too, but my biggest gig was playing the teen Mass at church.”
Mike laughed, enjoying the idea of Sonny playing the guitar and singing church songs with a group of other kids.  Sonny, however, was fascinated to learn about Mike’s high school garage band, and the groups he’d played with throughout his time in the military.  He was entertained, but more intrigued, by the picture Mike painted of himself as a tortured artist during his Hell’s Kitchen days.
“So what made you give it up?”
“It got old.  The squalor, the messed-up hours, the drugs… I just figured I was ready to grow up.”
“You did drugs?”
“Nah.  Smoked a lot of weed, is all.  But I saw a lot of it, and I got tired of being around junkies.  Mostly, what made me give up that life was just, I kept hearing my father’s voice, telling me I was never gonna be a success in that world, and I could succeed in this one.”
“His world.”
Mike shrugged.  “I guess so.”
“You think you gave up music for your dad?”
“I don’t know.  He had a lot to do with it, I guess.  But it was my choice, too.  I was done being dirty and broke.”
“Huh.”  Sonny said thoughtfully.
“What, ‘huh?’”
“Nothin’.  Just…  What’s it like working for your dad? Personally, I find him to be… a challenge.  And it kinda seems like you do, too, if you don’t mind my sayin’ so.  Plenty of jobs in the NYPD.  Why wouldn’t you go someplace else?”
Mike sighed, thinking.  “He’s got this five-year plan.  That’s what he calls it, his ‘five-year plan’.  SVU is part of that.”
“’He’s’ got a plan.  What about ‘you’ got a plan?”
“Meaning?”
“I mean, that’s what he wants you to do.  Is that what you want to do?”
“Well, sure.”
“’Well, sure’,” Sonny mimicked.  “I’m not buyin’ it.”
“You think I secretly yearn to go back to a two-room dump with no windows in the back of a fifth-floor walk-up?  Working behind a bar watching hookups and fights all night long?”
“I don’t know.  And, to be honest, I get the feeling you don’t, either.”
“Fuck, Carisi.  You got some balls callin’ me a daddy’s boy.” The words could have been harsh except that he was smiling as he said them.
“That’s not exactly what I’m sayin’,” Sonny said thoughtfully, studying Mike almost as he would a suspect.  “You just seem kind of… obedient, is all.  I’d like to hear you say ‘I want’ sometime, rather than ‘my father wants’. That’s all.”
“You want another beer?”  Mike asked, giving his empty bottle a swing by the neck.
“Nah,” Sonny answered.  “Let’s get outta here.”
Did he say that with an invitation in his voice?  What was that look?  Mike berated himself, again, for drinking around Sonny.  He was hard enough to resist sober.
It was starting to feel familiar, walking through these streets together.  Mike thought Sonny seemed to be walking a bit more slowly than usual, and consciously chose not to ask about it.  If Sonny wanted to prolong the walk, Mike had no objections.  Nothing bad could come of walking together.  He just wished it didn’t feel so damn good.  He wished they were going somewhere together, instead of just walking together to separate destinations.  He didn’t notice when his mind began to wander forward, to what it might be like to be heading back to Sonny’s apartment, maybe to kiss again-
“Are you?”  Sonny’s amused, insistent voice cut through his sultry daydream.
“Huh?  Am I what?”
Sonny laughed.  “I asked if you were paying any attention to me.  I’m callin’ that a ‘no’.  Where were you?”
They reached the corner where Mike would turn off to go to his apartment.  “Nowhere,” he mumbled.
“You OK?”  The teasing note left Sonny’s voice, to be replaced by a note of kind concern as they stopped walking and Sonny turned to Mike.
“Yeah, I was just… thinkin’.”
“About me?”  Sonny asked. Mike would have expected a different expression on his face.  Flirtatious, or mocking, or something.  But Sonny’s eyes were serious, his features open and guileless.  He was honestly and simply asking the question.  It was disarming.
“Yeah,” Mike said softly, looking into Sonny’s eyes, dark blue here under the streetlight.  “I was thinking it would be nice if we could be going somewhere together, instead of home alone.”
Sonny didn’t respond, or move, or change his expression. Which meant that it was Mike who put his arm around Sonny and his hand behind Sonny’s neck, pulling him into a kiss. Sonny hadn’t started it, but he responded with eager heat.  He tasted like beer, and Sonny, and sex, and temptation.  Mike could smell his body, warm from the walk, a deep, almost sweet scent that made Mike want to lick him, or chew him.
When they came up for air after several intimate, promising moments, Sonny murmured, “I think I just got my wish.  I heard Mike Dodds say ‘I want’.”
“Believe me, I want.  But this is dangerous for both of us,” Mike warned, going back to kissing him with growing passion.
“I know that,” Sonny responded, his answer in his kisses as much as his words.  “And I’ll take my chances, if it means I can be with you.  But it’s your decision.  We both have to be willing to risk it.”
Eventually, Mike surrendered as he’d always known he would, taking Sonny’s hand and turning toward home, walking in silence.  On the way, Mike put an arm around Sonny’s shoulders, holding him close and kissing him on the temple, just because he could.  Sonny’s arm felt warm around Mike’s waist.  Mike felt somehow as if he had missed having it there, although it had never been there before.
Mike’s entire awareness was so full of Sonny that he had no memory of the rest of the walk home, or of unlocking the door next to the dry cleaner’s and climbing the stairs to his apartment above it.  He pulled Sonny into his arms as soon as the door to his apartment was unlocked, and this time he was the one who got to press against Sonny, holding him against the wall.
“Shit, Carisi, you have no idea how bad I want you,” Mike growled into Sonny’s neck, finding it frustrating that he couldn’t both unbutton his shirt and press against his chest at the same time.
Sonny was clearly having similar thoughts, because he reached up and pulled his tie off in one motion, helping Mike with the rest of his buttons so that he could yank his shirt and jacket off together, throwing them and forgetting about them before they hit the floor.  Once they had struggled and grunted their way through removing Mike’s jacket and shirt, as well, their bare chests were enough skin contact for the moment.  That allowed them to ravage eachother’s mouths and rub against one another, moaning hungrily without regard to what Mike’s neighbors might hear happening just inside the door.
Eventually, Mike ran his hands up Sonny’s chest, finally burying his fingers in that hair, and looked into his eyes, panting for air.  The almost sweet smell of Sonny, combined with the hint of musk they were creating together, made Mikes’ head swim.
“Babe, we should…  We shouldn’t…”
“I don’t want to hear ‘should’ from you right now,” Sonny rasped, his breath ragged.  “Tell me what you want.”
“You know what I want.”
“Say it.”
“I want to fuck you. “
“Then take me to your bedroom and do it.”
Mike kissed Sonny deeply and thoroughly before taking his hand and leading him the few steps through his front room to his bedroom.  They stood next to Mike’s bed, kissing and unhooking first each other’s belts, then hooks and zippers, until they could finally touch each other.  With hands wrapped around each other’s cocks, they stroked one another until they were groaning with need.  Sonny felt like perfection; long and rock-hard, but Mike wanted this first time to last. He consciously tried to slow things down, taking time to slide Sonny’s pants and boxers over his hips and let them fall down his legs.  While Sonny toed off his shoes, Mike quickly stripped off the rest of his own clothes and shoes, then led Sonny onto the bed.
Lying next to each other made it easier to kiss and explore one another, and the short break to undress and get into bed had allowed them to slow their pace a bit.  Mike found himself looking into Sonny’s beautiful blue eyes and stroking his chest, trying to restrain himself from focusing on his cock.  He didn’t want this to be over too soon.  He was overwhelmed with sensations.  He was as aroused as he could ever remember being, but his desire to fuck Sonny was matched by an equal desire to touch him, to stroke him and taste him everywhere. He didn’t just want to fuck.  He wanted to experience Sonny, to be fucking him.  It was a totally new experience Mike had absolutely no idea how to approach.
“You are so fucking beautiful, Sonny.  Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?”
Sonny smiled and pulled Mike to him in a hungry, invasive kiss, reaching down and taking Mike into his hand.  Mike was spellbound by his caress, heedless of the sounds he was making, of the way he was saying Sonny’s name.  He couldn’t stop himself – didn’t even try to stop himself – from rolling on top of Sonny, beginning a slow, deep grind that had them both gasping.
“Fuck, you feel so good,” Sonny gasped.  “I want you inside me.  Will you…?”
Mike tore himself away to fumble in his nightstand for supplies, tossing them on the bed near Sonny’s hip and returning to kiss him hungrily, as though he’d been gone for hours.  After re-establishing that Sonny was still there for him, still wanting this, he began to kiss his way down Sonny’s body, faster than was particularly romantic, and promising himself that he would take a long time to explore Sonny’s body with his mouth as soon as possible.
Sonny swore loudly when Mike took him into his mouth, eagerly tasting him by swirling his tongue around his cock while he took him as deeply as he could.  Mike inhaled deeply the smell of Sonny there, in his most intimate place, dizzy with desire as he blindly coated his fingers with lube.  He worshiped Sonny with his mouth while he rubbed the lube between his fingers, warming it up a bit before reaching to softly stroke Sonny’s hole.  Again, Sonny almost shouted a curse word as Mike moved his fingers against him.
“Do it,” he hissed.  “Fuck me…”
Mike tried to pay attention to Sonny as he slid a finger into him, wanting to be gentle, but Sonny was past that. He pushed down onto Mike, fucking himself on Mike’s finger already.  Mike, balanced on one hand over Sonny’s hips as he finger-fucked him and sucked him, was near insane with need himself, especially watching Sonny’s writhing and hearing his cries.  As Mike began to fuck him with two fingers, unconsciously murmuring his name, Sonny pulled at his shoulder, pulling Mike up toward him.
“I can’t- you gotta stop that – I don’t wanna come before you’re inside me…”  Sonny’s speech was disjointed, his words crammed in between deep gasps of air and moans.
Mike obeyed, kissing and licking up Sonny’s chest as he slipped a third finger inside him, sliding them as far in as they would go and feeling Sonny pushing down to meet him.  By the time he had kissed his way up to Sonny’s lips again, Sonny had reached over and torn open a condom.  Mike removed his fingers from Sonny and lifted up so that Sonny could slip the condom over Mike’s cock.  He could easily have come just from the feeling of Sonny’s hands on him, but gritted his teeth and managed to hold off, moving into position and pressing the head of his dick against Sonny’s pucker.
“You OK?”  Mike grunted between breaths.
“Fuck, yeah.  I just need you…”
Mike pushed into Sonny, feeling the initial resistance and tightness, but also feeling Sonny pushing toward him, urging him deeper.  He whispered Sonny’s name yet again as he took his mouth, devouring his lips as he slid in and out, quickly beginning to speed up his thrusts.  There was no way he was going to be able to do this for long, not with the gorgeous man beneath him stroking his tongue across Mike’s lips and making those unspeakably erotic sounds.  When he felt Sonny take his dick into his hand and begin to stroke, Mike let himself go.  He felt the first shocks of a volcanic explosion just as Sonny cried out and he felt the hot spurt of Sonny’s climax.  Waves and waves of ecstasy washed over Mike as he continued to plunge himself into Sonny for as long as he could, unaware that he was groaning Sonny’s name over and over with each thrust.
Afterward, when they’d recovered enough to clean up and settle under the covers together, Mike found that he couldn’t hold Sonny close enough.  He found himself kissing him wherever he could reach as Sonny lay with his face buried in Mike’s neck.  Mike stroked Sonny’s hair, put a leg over Sonny’s and pulled his legs closer to entwine with his, and slid his hand up and down Sonny’s back, tired and sated for the moment but unable to stop… experiencing Sonny.
Another thing that had never happened to Mike before.  He wanted to cry, and laugh, and kiss Sonny some more, and sing every sappy love ballad he’d ever heard.  Love. Mike realized that this felt like the way the songs described love, although he’d never felt anything like this before.  Was this love?  Mike was mature enough to know that, lying entwined with a pretty man when his dick was still a little hard and the sweat hadn’t even dried wasn’t the time to decide he was in love.  But he couldn’t deny that this was more than he had ever felt before.  He fell asleep wondering what was happening to him.
He woke up with Sonny’s lips wrapped around his cock and his hands exploring Mike just as Mike had done to him the night before.  Mike’s sleep- and hormone-addled mind wasn’t sure whether it was the best head he’d ever gotten or just the best wet dream he’d ever had.  Whichever, it was glorious.
When he came down from his orgasm, he rolled Sonny onto his back and, taking time to kiss him tenderly, began to move down Sonny’s body, taking the time to do some of the tasting and exploring he’d promised himself the night before.
“You don’t have to-” Sonny murmured, his closed eyes and half-smile belying his words.
“Fuck, yes I do.  Maybe you don’t need me to, but I need me to. I’ve been wanting to since the second I saw you.  You say you want me to tell you what I want?  I want to suck your pretty dick and make you come down my throat.  That’s what I want.”
Conveniently, it was what Sonny wanted, too.
Although it was difficult to let Sonny out of his arms to go home and change for work, it gave Mike a chance to think.  To process what had happened – was happening – with Sonny.  Mike actually appreciated the normalcy of going to work and doing routine things that reminded him of who he was.  Because he couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t quite the same man he’d been when he’d left the squad room the day before.  It wasn’t just that he’d slept with Sonny Carisi, and it wasn’t just that it had been spectacular.  He’d slept with other people, had great sex with some of them, and it didn’t change who he was.  But something had happened to him, and whatever it was, Sonny was responsible for it. If he’d been concerned before about what could happen, now he was truly afraid.  He felt like he had when Sonny had kissed him.  Entirely in Sonny’s control, and ecstatic to be there.  He’d been willing to let Sonny make him do anything that night.  But this was his life.  What might Sonny be able to make him do to his life?
The fear didn’t stop Mike from taking Sonny back to his apartment after work.  Although he didn’t usually bottom, something made him want to feel Sonny inside him this time, and Sonny was more than happy to switch places.
It became easier to ignore the fear every time he made love with Sonny, which was as often as they could manage it.  They were never really tempted to try to steal some time together at work, but that had little to do with the absolute need to keep their relationship secret.  It had much more to do with the need to keep their sex life entirely separate from the hideous crimes they investigated, to avoid any possibility of the ugliness they saw at SVU seeping into their own lives. From that first night together, whenever they were both off work at night, they were together at one or the other of their apartments.  It didn’t make sorting out his feelings any easier for Mike but, somehow, when he was with Sonny, he felt less untethered and afraid of whatever this was.  It was only when he was alone, or with his father, that Mike wondered how he was ever going to get back to normal.  It was at one of those moments when he had the thought that maybe, if he and Sonny kept having sex as often as they were, at some point he would get Sonny out of his system, and he’d be himself again.  He ignored the voice in the back of his mind saying that so far, the opposite seemed to be happening.
After Mike and Sonny had been lovers for about a month, they were lying in Sonny’s bed in the position they most often took after sex, with Sonny lying in Mike’s arms and their legs intertwined.  They had been forehead-to-forehead, looking into one another’s eyes, murmuring silly, affectionate nothings to one another.  Sonny was trying to figure out exactly what color Mike’s eyes were, and why he found them so hypnotic.  Mike was simply being amused, watching the way Sonny’s mouth moved and just enjoying being close.
At some point, Sonny’s expression became more serious, and his voice became even softer than the quiet purr it had been.  “Can I tell you something?”
“Babe, you can tell me anything,” Mike grinned lazily, kissing him.
Shallow frown lines appeared between Sonny’s eyes as he began.  “You know, I wanted you from the minute I saw you, and I wanted not to like you.  But you blew past that right away, and then we became friends.  And then… this happened.”
He stopped, seeming more to be struggling to find words than to have said all he meant to say. Mike simply said, “And?”
“And now I just…  Mike, I…  I really like you.  This is more than just sex for me.  I don’t know what you’re gonna do with that information, I know you’re at more risk than me, but I just… need you to know.  For me.”
“Sonny…”  Mike pulled Sonny to him and held him almost painfully tight, kissing the side of his head because it was the only place within reach.  “Me, too, Babe.  God help me, this… you… it’s more than sex for me, too.”
As the weeks went by, they continued to spend every possible night together, and had gradually come to spend all their time in Sonny’s cheerful, comfortable apartment rather than Mike’s drab, utilitarian place.  Mike’s apartment had become the place he returned to when he needed to pick up his mail, or get fresh clothes, although more and more of those had taken up residence at Sonny’s.
Sonny came home from Sunday dinner with his family to find Mike slouched on the sofa, his long legs draped lazily over the coffee table and ESPN playing on the television with the sound off, the way Mike often watched sports for some reason.  Sonny had teased Mike about it, saying he thought it was cute, and maybe a little weird, which was incidentally the way he would describe Mike on the whole. Tonight, Mike was sipping a beer and paying no attention to whatever game was on.
“You OK, hon?”  Sonny asked as he breezed through the room to the kitchen to deal with the bags of leftovers his mother always sent home with him.
“Yeah, I’m good.  Just thinkin’.”
“About?”
“I don’t know.  Nothin’.”
Sonny came back out of the kitchen and stopped on his way to the bedroom.  “You sure everything’s OK?”
“Everything’s great.  I guess that’s what I was thinkin’ about.”  Mike smiled affectionately at Sonny, thinking he looked particularly adorable in his church clothes, casual slacks and a cable-knit sweater over a T-shirt.
“Well, hold that thought. Let me get changed, and then I wanna hear all about how great everything is.”  Sonny’s smile was incandescent and, for some reason, he was blushing just a bit.
He quickly returned from the bedroom, still wearing the T-shirt, and now comfortable in a pair of Mike’s sweats. For some time now, Sonny had made a habit of wearing clothes that Mike had worn, saying that it made him feel closer to him.  He especially liked wearing Mike’s shirts, because he said they smelled like him.  Mike had felt his chest clutch when he said that, and could have sworn that there were tears threatening behind his eyes.
Sonny sat down next to Mike, as close as possible, and put his legs over Mike’s and his head on Mike’s shoulder, scooting his body under Mike’s arm so that Mike had no choice but to put his arm around him.  As though Mike wanted a choice.
“So.  You were thinkin’ things are good, huh?”
Mike laughed and tipped Sonny’s face up to kiss him.  It was a few minutes before he pulled away slightly.  “Yeah.  Good.”
“What else were you thinkin’?”
Sonny was a talker.  He was always asking how Mike was feeling, what he was thinking, how he felt about things.  Sometimes that was difficult for Mike, because he didn’t tend to ask himself those questions.  But he’d begun to, somewhere in the couple of months he’d been seeing Sonny.  Thinking about Sonny was always nice, but the habit had begun to creep into other areas of Mike’s life, and it wasn’t always pleasant.
“I was thinking about… you and me, I guess.  How we got here.  Where ‘here’ is.”
“You come to any conclusions?”
Mike hesitated, then shrugged. “I told you.  That things are good.”
Sonny shook his head.  “You kill me.  You’ll chase an armed perp without a second thought, you’ll go nose to nose with anyone who wants to challenge you, no matter how big they are.  But ask you to talk about how you feel, or what you think, and you panic and start lookin’ for the exit.”
Sonny sat up and turned to Mike, putting a hand out to stroke his hair.  His whole face was aglow as he looked at Mike, his sentimental grin showing his dimples and making crinkles around his eyes, both of which made the bottom drop out of Mike’s stomach.
“It’s one of the things I love about you.  It’s also one of the things that make me want to strangle you.”
Mike stroked Sonny’s thigh, smiling back into his eyes.  “Did you just tell me you love me?”
“Not very eloquently.  But I do.”
Mike sighed happily, his eyes showing all that he felt.  “I love you, too.  How’s that for talking about my feelings?”
“Pretty fuckin’ good,” Sonny said, beaming the full wattage of his radiant smile on Mike.  “I think you deserve a reward.”

first post in a long fucking time i guess
i live in philadelphia now. that’s pretty cool. its strange how i ended up here though.
a little... inventory of my time. for myself. or for whoever wants to read it.
i think i moved out of my parents house two years exactly after i moved in, after a day when i went into work drunk, and kept getting drunk, and was taken home by my chef. my dad came into pittsburgh that day and picked me up and i said ‘look, i gotta get away from all of this.’ he chided me, told me i was a fuck up, couldn’t believe i was addicted to drugs, but he let me back in.
i moved back to indiana (pa), and my best friend is still there, and he’s still selling massive amounts of weed and blow. i don’t like weed, but whatever. everyone i went to high school with is also still there. they are all terrible. still.
he keeps doing blow in front of me and i start doing it. fuck.
nothing is gelling. i had a job as like, lead server and manager for this part of a dive bar that had been converted into a restaurant, and the owners were total assholes. a full months pay came out to $347 because they kept me at server wage and i never waited on any tables. i decided to start drinking during my shift. i walked out and quit.
got another serving job at a little italian place. i work there for two weeks before my dad decides i have to go on vacation with them. forces me to no call no show to the only job in town i could possibly stand. this is something that would happen later on in the year too. it makes me so fucking angry thinking about it.
we are selling the house in indiana and have a house in state college. i decide to move there to pursue work. there was nothing in indiana for me. it was just named the poorest town in pennsylvania. it shows. i moved to state college and started working at the only cocktail bar in town. i got fired for getting drunk at work. was constantly, and belligerently drunk. all the time. completely alienated from anyone. I get a second dui. after that i started drug and alcohol counseling.
that saved my life.
i kept drinking throughout it. didnt want to get my shit together. was on celexa and lamictal. still am on lamictal, but switched to wellbutrin.
house in indiana is sold. parents use that money to buy a condo in florida.
i can’t stand living with my father. he drives me insane. he is constantly screaming at his ipad when it autocorrects. he is constantly screaming in general. constantly belittles me. i get a job at a country club. its cushy. i lose it because i got drunk at work. again.
go to rehab.
there for three weeks. sober for 6 months. house arrest, work the worst job of my life. get a new serving job at the only decent fine dining place in town. HAve it for about a month and then .... relapse. that period was HORRIBLE. absolute hell. i can’t believe what a prick i was. horrible mood swings. horrible everything. mania. etc.
this is when i was coming off of SSRIs and switching ti wellbutrin.
i put my job in jeopardy in early november. thats always when really bad stuff happens. but my manager understood and took care of me. that broke a cycle.
i take a trip to new york and it completely changes my life. i joked that i found god in new york but i really did. it immediately became apparent to me that i was living life day to day and that i didn;’t think about anything other than that small shitty house living with my dad who has nothing better to do than belittle me constantly. i remember that i was independent at one point and time and can be again.
that changed everything.
i continue to drink, but something changes inside of me and suddenly i dont get as drunk as before, and dont get angry or vindictive or whatever,,, at all. i dont immediately get horrendously manic and go into a tornado.
i decide that i;m going to work through graduation at spats and move to new york. my father moves to florida with my mother for the winter, and my friend darcy moves in, which is a whole other thing, she can fuck off.
and then...
its announced that the restaurant is closing. 30 years for spats, 85 years for the rathskeller. forced out because the landlords suddenly have a new tenant and there’s no way we’ll ever be able to afford the rent. entire town and community goes apeshit over it closing, and as a result we were booked like every day was a busy friday night.
i decide that instead of new york i’m going to move to philadelphia.
the restaurant closed january 27th. i moved the 28th. I’m here now.
it’s the best decision i ever made.
why i’ve changed is because i’m carrying my own box.
we all have a box, and its fucking heavy, we need help with it sometimes. but when you take things out of the box to lighten the load and give it to other people to help, they forget that what you gave them is yours. you eventually have to put it back in and start carrying it forward. i needed time to get the strength to do that, now i have it.
and tonights my first goth night in two years! wooo

To start, my girlfriend is insured completely separate from me and in no way affects my policy. My girlfriend was recently in a car accident. This is her second at-fault accident in a 2 year period. Her car was totaled in the accident and she was trying to get quotes for insurnace on a new vehicle she will be financing. She has been getting quotes around $270/mo and below with the history I stated above. She did have one company give her a quote of $170/mo, then State Farm said they could forgive her first accident and she would have to pay around $136/mo I have never been in an accident, I have never received any type of ticket, I have nothing on my record. Getting a quote on the exact same car (2004 Toyota Rav4), just in my name and with the financing in my name, my quotes average $300. This is insane. My car is currently going through my parents insurance so I only pay $40.00/mo to them and it's all good, but I decided to get some quotes on my car just to see how much it would be... The car is a 1994 Toyota Corolla, 4DR sedan. I am 19 years old, will be 20 very soon. Like I said, I have a CLEAN driving history. My quotes on this car are as follows for liability coverage: Allstate: $113/mo Progressive: $162/mo State Farm: $262/mo Now, to me, this is insane. My girlfriend's insurance was about $50.00/mo on her Dodge Stratus. She wrecked it. The insurance on her new car, which was only liability again, was just $60.00/mo. Now she is getting the $135 to $170/mo quote for full coverage on this Toyota Rav4. If anyone can help me understand how she can get cheaper FULL COVERAGE insurance with her driving history than I can get of LIABILITY insurance with my history, please do. This makes no sense to me at all.""

How much should a car cost? Really.?
Just from some light browsing on the internet, it seems like they (the advertisers/car manufacturers) want us to believe that $30k is a reasonable median cost for a new car in the U.S. The price goes up disporportionately if they can call it a 'crossover' or the holy grail: SUV!!! $$$$$$$$ Assuming a person makes around $50k a year gross/ $30k a year net (is that a reasonable assumption for the U.S.?), and assuming the car will be worth close to $0 in 5 years, a $30k car works out to be around 20% of his or her income, not including gas repairs insurance et cetera. Is this reasonable? Is it sustainable? Are we heading for a 'correction' in auto pricing? or is the plan that we all just use financing tricks to perpetuate these exhorbitant prices?""

Renewing car insurance after non-fault claim?
I am due to renew my car insurance and am looking for new quotes. In February I got hit by another driver. When I'm looking at quotes it asks me for incidents in last 3/5 years. I assume need to declare this, despite it not being my fault, as it went through the insurance. But it asks for the total cost of the claim but won't except 0. How do I fill this section in correctly. It's driving me bonkers!!!!""

Best way to get car insurance?
I have heard that it may be better to get car insurance from a broker rather than online. I am 18, and I want to get my own policy. I am currently a named driver on my dads policy, as it is much cheaper to do it that way but I want to buy a car in my name and start earning my own ncb. I currently drive a Jaguar X Type and the insurance costs 2100 from Tesco (with my dad as the main driver). It would cost me about 3200 to insure it myself with Tesco. I want to get a smaller car that is easier on petrol and road tax, but I am having trouble finding a realistic quote. I am thinking about either a Smart Roadster coupe, a honda civic or ford fiesta. With Tesco, I dont get 1 year ncb as I would have done with Direct Line, and the insurance would be OK if I did. Its tempting me to lie on the insurance if I cant find a decent quote (under 2000), although I wouldn't want to. ""What kind of qualities should I look for when purchasing a car? ie insurance, modern elements...?""
For experienced buyers: As an entry level analyst looking to purchase a car, I was hoping to get some ideas about my first big purchase. My norm has usually been purchasing something and regretting it some time down the road ie Bought a Dell laptop, turns out it heats up a lot. Or a new smartphone (android), turns out it freezes plenty. So I want to purchase a car, and was hoping if someone who is experienced could possibly take some time off to tell me what I should look out for. I understand insurance is a *****, and even though cars are affordable on lease, the insurance will get you. My objective: Car : Lease a pre-owned or 2nd hand car, possibly 2012 or 2013 model, 4 door, sedan. Insurance : Max coverage, low payment (ideal but, shoot for the stars and....) Questions: I understand there are qualities or modern elements like lane stabilizer and effective cruise control that can reduce insurance coverage. How effective can they be? What kind of sedans have low insurance and are modernistic, such as built in navigation and those cool looking monitors? (kind of childish) Which insurance coverages are the most important, there is basic, comprehensive.... If you need additional information, I will be checking this question hourly and will be glad to provide additional information. Thanks!""

Do I qualify for low cost Health Insurance?
I'm under 21 & still living at home. I live at home with my mother & sibling. My mother can't afford insurance through her work beings it'll be almost 1/3 of her paycheck a month. Where should I look for health insurance for my mom?
My mom is 55 years old and lives in another state as me. I currently work and live in Pennsylvania at a great company that provides health insurance, dental, vision, etc. I cannot add her to my policy, as much as I would like to so I would like to try and find a policy for her. My dad works for a company that provides health insurance, however the cost of health insurance to him and my mother (who live together and are married) is extremely high. Currently, they are seeking alternatives so that my dad is covered under insurance through his company and my mom can get coverage through a third party company at a lower rate. The rate they are asking my father to pay to have both of them on the coverage policy is insanely high. I pay about $55 a month for health insurance and they are at least quadruple that. I'm looking for suggestions for a reliable and trusted company (Aetna, Anthem, etc.) that would provide individual health insurance at an affordable rate, if anyone knows of anything.""

Who insures a teenage driver when the parents are divorced?
We are getting ready to add my stepson to our auto insurance. He does not have a car yet, but when he does get one it will be in his father's name. His mother as far as I know has no auto insurance. She drives a car that belongs to her parents and I assume they insure it. This is the living situation and what is in place legally at this time. The mother is the primary custodian of the child. However, he resides at our house 85% of the time. My husband has educational gaurdianship so that he can attend school in our district. I have researched this and what I have found is that the parent who has primary custody is the one who adds the child to insurance. Then I also read that the parent with whom the child resides the majority of time carries the child on the insurance. I am just trying to prepare and educate myself before having to deal with the ex-wife. Money is not the issue as the child will be required to work and pay for his own insurance (our house rule). Has anyone ever dealt with anything like this?""

Need advice on qualifying for subsidized health insurance?
I'm an older full-time college student and my husband works full-time at Walmart. In the past three years, I've been through 4 cancer related surgeries, which were paid for by the breast/cervical cancer Medicaid program. Unfortunately, follow up care and monitoring aren't covered and I was dropped from Medicaid. I'm now on my husband's health insurance, which is basically worthless because our income is under $20,000/yr and the policy has a $4500 deductible plus 20% after. I haven't seen my oncologist for over a year because we can't afford the expensive scans, biopsies, and lab work associated with cancer follow-up with a deductible that high. I thought my situation would change in 2014 with Obamacare. I recently learned from the healthcare.gov website calculator that our income is low enough to qualify for expanded Medicaid (which our state decided not to expand), but I don't qualify for the health insurance subsidies I desperately need because the outrageous deductible health insurance from my husband's job covers spouses. How can a couple with an income so low they would qualify for expanded Medicaid be ineligible for subsidies? I am completely devastated over this and I don't know what to do. Not being able to afford cancer follow up care is putting my life in danger. Even if my husband's employer (Walmart) quit covering the spouses of full-time employees, I think that would only apply to new hires because of the grandfather clause. If getting subsidies was based on income alone the way it should be instead of access to employer provided coverage, I would qualify for a zero deductible policy and $3 co-pays with a monthly premium of around $60. I could then afford the expensive health care I need. We live in a college town so if my husband got a different job, he'd make even less than he does now and we would probably end up homeless. If my husband transfers and we move to a state that's expanding Medicaid, I'll have to quit school and get rid of my German Shepherd and Siberian Husky since it's almost impossible to find a landlord that allows them. We thought another option might be to get a divorce on paper and co-habitate until our situation changes (completing my degree and getting a good job so I can afford the deductible), then re-marry. When I asked about that, someone actually accused me of wanting to commit fraud! How can anyone think of something like fraud when a situation is endangering someone's life? I am desperate to somehow qualify for health insurance subsidies without lying, which could get us in trouble. Any ideas?""
Tesco Car insurance cancelled?
I have just returned from 2 months being away and was very much surprised to read letters from tesco insurance about being unable to take money from my account for the annual renewal of my policy and therefore cancelling it. I talked to my bank and they said that there were not attempts to take money from my account by tesco. While tesco says that my card has been refused. I asked tesco if they could reinstate my policy due to some fault with the payment, which does not seem to be my bank they say that cancelled policy cannot be reinstated and suggest to pay  230 for the period that they were trying to collect and open a much more expensive new policy. They also told me that I face penalty because my car is uninsured now. I would like to reinstate the policy as cancelled unfairly and at the same time I need to insure my car quickly to avoid facing penalty. I wanted to maintain Tesco policy in case they reinstate it, as i will not have cancelled policy on my records and will not have to pay extra for the month, they have been cancelling my account, i also have 2 years no claim with them, provided another insurance, whose car slightly dammaged my front door, while i was parked at a petrol station, pays them. This insurance admitted that it was their fault, but have not finished paying Tesco. This is another reason, tesco could do me even cheaper insurance, once the responsible party pays in full. If i leave it as it is i am afraid that in additioon to cancelled policy I will have a not fully payed claim on my records.""

Is this insurance company giving me the runaround?
I filed a claim with USAA on September 5th on a hit and run accident in which the police were able to find the person and get his insurance. He called them and said he didn't do it - and I hit him. I called, gave my side of the story and the number of the police who were handling the accident. They always say they will call me back and they don't - so I call them in which they give me another date they will get back to me. They never ONCE have gotten back to me. The policy holder who hit me is now in jail on an unrelated offense and they say they cannot get his statements - duh. They say they will contact the police and get back to me - but they never have. The damage to the car isn't that much - it is $416 (just a headlight) but I cannot afford to pay for it. Putting it through my insurance is dumb because the deductable is $500 - at least I think that is how it works. Could you give me advice on how to deal with USAA? He was driving his car and a motorcyclist ran into him doing around 90 mph, causing the bike to flip and the guy on the bike to dismount and skid across the freeway. The motorcyclist was lucky he didn't get run over or killed. It was deemed by both the insurance companies that it was the motorcyclists fault and when the motorcyclist tried to sue our insurance company, we got a letter from our attorney that the case had been dismissed and no further action was needed. Today, we got a call out of the blue from Mercury saying my brother couldn't be on the insurance anymore because they had settled with the motorcyclist for $100,000 and basically, if we didn't get him off the insurance, my whole family would be removed. We didn't receive any notification that Mercury was planning on paying this guy out or that our rates would be altered. We called the attorney's office but he wasn't in and we explained the situation and the receptionist said they might of just settled anyway without letting us know even though this whole thing wasn't even my brother's fault. My question is, if the accident was the fault of the motorcyclist and when the motorcyclist initially sued and was denied a settlement (there was no mention of a settlement on the attorney's letter; it just said that it was dismissed), how and why would Mercury give this jacka$$ $100,000 and deny my brother coverage? It's all very confusing and any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!""

Who has the cheapest motorcycle insurance?
This is going to sound crazy but try to stay with me here. I'm 17 about to be 18 and I live in Michigan. I'm going to be going to college in Lima, Ohio and will be driving back to michigan every couple of weeks. I have a truck that sucks gas so I am going to buy a bike. Either an 98'-05' Yamaha YZF R6 or R1 I haven't decided yet. I was wondering who has the cheapest insurance for what I'm doing with the bike. Basically driving it long distance and to class every so often. It will be stored in my apartment down there whenever I'm not driving it. Can anyone help me out. I know I'm a little young for any kind of cheap insurance but maybe there is a company out there that gives breaks to college students? Well anyway the main question is : From your experiences which company has the cheapest motorcycle insurance?""

How do insurance companies calculate insurance?
I went on to a price comparison site to check car insurance. For the car I wanted the price was great 320 for 1 year inc breakdown cover. (Insurance group 14). It got me thinking if I got a car in a lower insurance group what the price difference would be. So I entered the exact same details apart from a car in insurance group 2. Where should I look for health insurance for my mom?

Help with Car insurance cost?
ok so im 17 1/2 year old male and ive been driving since i was 15 1/2. As of right now im covered under my parents insurance with Mercury auto insurance and i pay $500 for 6 months of coverage ($1000 a year). I am currently covered for the three cars that my family owns 1996 Acura 2.5 TL (my crappy car) 2008 MBenz C300 (moms) 2011 Mazda 3 (Dads) So heres my question.. My car (the TL) is starting to break down and the cost of service is outmatching the value of the car. So ive been saving up to try to get another car and i am going to put down 40-50% of the money and my parents are gonna pay for the rest. The cost of the car is not the issue i was wondering more about my cost of insurance for the cars that i am interested in. I know that my most accurate response would be from the Insurance companies themselves, but i dont have time right now. I just wanted to know what you guys thought about how much i should pay per month for these cars. So the cars im interested in ( theres alot lol) are: 90's Toyota MR2 (preferably turbo, but i could live without it) Subaru WRX (Non-STI) Nissan 350Z Honda S2000 BMW 330i (coupe only) 00'-04' Ford Mustang GT There are others but i cant remember them right off the top of my head.. I know its gonna be WAY more expensive then what i pay now and that most of these cars are 2 door and 2 seat which will just make it worse. But im really willing to work for it and like i said i pay my own insurance bill. So how much do you think each of these cars cost for monthly insurance? And of the cars listed which would you most recommend?""

How do health insurance deductibles work?
I'm looking at individual health insurance plans. All of them say they have a deductable of $500 - $5000. I'm reading the plan overview and it's explaining what the plan covers. Does this mean if a plan has a $5000 deductible that the health insurance company will not cover anything until after I've paid $5000 out of pocket on healthcare? There will be a maximum of 140 girls, 55 leaders, and 30 younger siblings (of leaders), (thats 225 people). The minumum would be roughly 50 girls, 25 leaders, and 10 siblings... I just need a guestimate as I am working on the budget and am trying to figure out how much to charge the attendees. Also, how much coverage do I need?""

4 years after DUI... insurance?
so when i was 21 i got a dui (it's called an oui here in Maine, but same thing). PLEASE DONT JUDGE ME I KNOW I WAS YOUNG AND STUPID. anyway, i ended up selling my car to pay for the whole mess since my license was getting suspended anyway. since then i have been a happy bicycle commuter! now the time has come for me to become an adult woman again and get my license back because i have enrolled in a college that is not in biking distance. I have signed up, paid for, and in 2 weeks will be taking the DEEP class required by the state of Maine in order to be licensed again. basically i am curious about my insurance premiums. i haven't had my license for almost 4 years, but i have read online that your insurance will have to be sr22 and all expensive and whatnot for THREE years. also, i have since turned 25 and will be 26 soon, so i expect a rate decrease from that. i guess my question is: have i managed to bypass the higher insurance rates because it has been 4 years? if so, it almost seems too good to be true. i am highly suspicious. can anyone give me some insight as to what to expect when purchasing my insurance? thanks chums""

How would my insurance company know this if I don't tell them?
I am getting ready to buy a home (Already selected, move in will be next week) and I own a German Shepard. I am currently shopping for homeowners insurance, and I know that many companies will not insure you if you have an aggressive breed of dog, and the ones that do will give you higher rates because of it. So I was wondering, what reason do I have to tell them that I have an aggressive breed? When they come to inspect the home, my friend down the street can watch my dog for a few hours. If I were to just leave out the fact that I have an aggressive breed so my rates will stay low, how would the insurance company ever be the wiser? PS: This IS a repost. Last time I asked everyone said Well it's misrepresentation and if you have ever have to make a claim, then they can deny you because you lied about the dog. Yes I understand what the consequences would be, that wasn't the question. My question is HOW could they ever find out in the first place? If I have to make a claim for say, a fire, then I could have someone take my dog for a few hours again and make the claim without having any reason to mention the dog? So how would they ever know?""

What type of lawyer do I need to sue my insurance company to fix my car after a car/deer accident? no injuries?
My insurance company wants to use reconditioned parts, and they are pressuring us to accept a check made out to us and the finance company. Not enough to pay it off or fix it. My vehicle is a loaded Suzuki Grand Vitara with all kinds of electronic stuff. Which were mostly scattered across the road after the deer committed suicide. They (the insurance company) had it towed to my home after the accident because there were no dealers in the area and my home was about 100 miles closer than Dallas. Now they are saying we have to pay to have it towed the 100 miles to the nearest dealer, or use someone local. They are also saying that we contacted the towing company and they are the ones who arranged the tow. There is no one local (car repair shop) who can work on it and get it right. I am afraid if we use someone local it won't be fixed right. The estimate they gave us has parts coming from a salvage and reconditioned parts dealers. I need to find a lawyer who can make them fix it right. If it can't be fixed right then I need them to total it. I have looked in the yellow pages and all of the accident attorneys want injuries. What’s going on with my life? I’ve lost control. I haven’t left my house in two weeks exactly and most of that’s been in my bed. I would rather sleep because each time I wake up and realize that I’m here I get sadder. I have no desire to do anything and find myself lying in bed for as long as I can each day. I have no passion or will to want to create anything, have no desire to get a deadend job here and every “perfect” plan i’ve had to move away from here continues to crumble. All my money is depleting and I feel like i’m losing time in my life to do anything. I’ve been out of school for almost two years now and I have nothing going for me. Even if I move to LA and try to start a company with Alex, if that fails I feel like I will be in some MAJOR trouble with my mental health.
I’ve felt like this for years but have never really thought about it until i’m in the situation. And I mean that in the way that when I feel really happy and good about life I don’t fear for these sad moments and I think it’s because I never realized that I get to these points. I never realized that I have a problem until I thought about it now. But is it a problem if they are situational problems that lead me into a deep depression, or do I have maniac depression?
I found myself depressed through middle school and high school. The only thing I had to look forward to was getting out of Pennsylvania and pursuing what I wanted to do. Getting my first job at Pizza Hut and making money helped me through my depression because although I had no friends and didn’t hang out with anyone, I at least had something to do and some social interaction. This made me a very hardworking individual because although I didn’t always enjoy the job I worked, I enjoyed the people around me. And having nothing else to do led me to always extending my day and taking peoples shifts and coming in whenever they needed me. Which in return gave me more money to save and made me happier for my future. I became very happy the last six months of my senior year (starting april of 2013) when I cleared my acne, got a new haircut, and created some social media accounts and became more social. I went on the senior trip and had a blast. I even started my “first” relationship. That was the happiest I had ever been in my life up until that point, I felt like I was on top of the world. Then chaos between us happened and with me moving away I ended things. I became very emotional, very sad, and in some ways I changed. I was extremely hurt and after that situation I became less loving and less open.
When I moved to Orlando I was extremely excited, that first month was amazing. Everyone was so cool, open, excited and we were all away from home so we could do whatever we wanted!! IT WAS INSANE. That was the best time ever. For the first two weeks I found myself still sad at night when I had moments to think about my relationship and still not being over her. But it was not as bad as it was before I moved. For the six months I found myself on an incredible high, until however I found myself in a rather upsetting position of confusion about my future. I had started a relationship with my still current girlfriend of 4 years back in November of 2013 and in June of 2014 I started questioning my life, where I would be, where I would end up, where I would go, what I would do. I was only 6 months into college and I was worried about everything. I broke up with my girlfriend out of the fear of what and where my life was going because I wanted a solid single moment to think about everything. And honestly it was a huge mistake. I did not need to leave her to do those things but in my mind I thought I did. I broke up with her the night that we had just gotten home from downtown disney and attending a concert with our friends. How fucked up is that? I couldn’t let her just enjoy the night?? I had mixed emotions and didn’t want to lie to her and make her think everything was okay. But honestly, I should’ve so that I didn’t ruin her night. My feelings could have waited one day tbh. Anyway, I ended things and soon afterwards it was July 4th and my friends and roommates had all left for their week vacation. I decided to stay back to assess my situation and in some ways it was good for me as it allowed some clear alone time, and gave me much time to think. I became very sad about ending my relationship and very jealous as I realized that she was with one of my friends at the time. I started thinking about what it was like without her, and I hated it. I knew I loved her. We got back together soon after and I found myself VERY happy. Aug. 2014 - Aug. 2015 was a very very very good time. That was the best I had ever felt. Being with her and enjoying life could not get any better. But then she graduated and in September of 2015 she moved away to Miami. I became very sad. I had just moved into a new apartment and not having her around led me to become very depressed. This became a dark time in my life. I didn’t hangout with many friends, and a lot of the time I found myself saying no to offers to go to parties, hangout with roommate, or even leave my bedroom at all. I would avoid contact with my roommate altogether  if I could some days by faking a phone call just to get to my room or just waiting for them to leave before I went to get something to eat or even leave the house. And sometimes  I would leave the house and then try and rush back before he got back home. It was bad. I had also come from a time of avoiding my roommates back in my last apartment because two of them were weird afff. But the only time I found myself happy is either when I was visiting her or hanging out with friends after school. I started to become more social with my friends and we started to soon create a tight bond. We started hanging more and more and my happiness grew. I became in a very bad situation again when I had gone through a long distance pregnancy scare with my girlfriend while in a very stressful situation in school for my class. It was very bad timing and I had been to the point of crying in the shower. I got through it with support from my friend and the happiness game became back at an all time high. I graduated September 2016 and this is when everything would change.
I had a plan with my friend to move to New York city. My girlfriend had moved there with his sister a few months back and my friend and I had visited in July of 2016. It was a great time. Although things were different between my girlfriend and I as we were changing people it was still very nice to see her. Fast forward to graduation and I hadn’t been able to commit to moving to NY because my girlfriend said her sister might relocate to LA and she might move with her. I really did NOT want this to happen because it would ruin everything. The plan I had with my friend would fall through, which is why I said I couldn’t commit at the moment. (It had nothing to do with money, I had that saved and ready, I was just waiting because I didn’t want to be away from my girlfriend.) So I moved back home in PA until I could figure out a plan. The first week of October the day after graduating I got on a flight with my parents and visited my grandfather in Dallas as he wasn’t doing very well. It was a good time getting to see family and spending a week with my parents especially. It felt like a mini vacation with family I hadn’t seen in a very long time. I was at a high, I was very happy. When we had arrived back home I started to apply to some local film jobs submitting my resume everywhere I could. My aunt had then passed away a week later and it was a sad time for the family. My grandmother  (other side of family) who had attended the funeral had started to slowly decline in health. I remember telling her that my girlfriend was coming for our anniversary the next month (Nov. 2016) and that i’d love for her and my aunts to meet her over dinner. She said that would be lovely and we had a plan to have dinner at her house. She began to decline in health very quickly and by the time my girlfriend came was on her deathbed. It was a very hard time, I am rather happy thought that she was able to meet my girlfriend. When she passed the whole family had taken it hard. It was very sad, I was sad. I had continued looking for jobs but kept getting no’s. Out of pressure for feeling like I wasn’t doing enough, I took a job at a hotel that my cousin had offered to me and stopped my search for film work. This would go on to become a very bad time. I started there the second week of Dec. 2016 and had a plan to visit my friend and girlfriend in NYC over new years. I went on that trip and was very happy. When I came back around the second week of Jan. 2017 My grandfather had declined in health and my mother, sister and I went to Dallas to visit him. My girlfriend had also moved to LA this time as well. He had passed away through one of the nights we were there but I was very happy to have been there to see him before he passed away. It was a very sad time for me and my family. I had issues with my work over this situation and work became to be very repetitive and scary. I was a night auditor for a hotel and was awake working by myself there 11pm - 7am sleeping during the day and working with very sketchy people in charge of the entire hotel by myself, alone at 21. It was a learning experience for sure, but definitely not a job I wanted to keep. I found myself very depressed again so I quit the job in April 2017 and went on to focus my time into film again. For the month of May I spent my time updating my resume and sending out applications. (not many, as I felt like I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go.) The next month in June 2017 I went on a family vacation to the D.R. and I had upgraded my equipment to a 5D mark iv and go pro 5. I was very excited! I was back to a high!! We had a blast of a time. Then I decided to visit my girlfriend in LA since we hadn’t seen each other in six months since January. That trip changed my outlook on life, I had a wonderful time and wanted to live there. I developed a plan with two of my friends that were there to find an apartment since they were already looking and I got my girlfriend on board too. The next month (Aug. 2017) I got an offer from a friend to fly out and work alongside him, so of course I did. It was a great time!! I had a blast and had worked 4 12 hour days straight. I felt so great because that’s the first time I worked in film since I graduated (almost a year exactly!!!). I then came back in Sept. 2017 and I tried to find a way to move there. This was my new mission. During which I gotten some freelance gigs. My one friend and girlfriend had both flaked on moving but I still had my other friend. By Oct. 2017 she had found someone else interested and I found a friend as well so we could get a 2 bed place. In Nov. 2017 My girlfriend came up for a wedding in the family in Virginia and I flew down with her to LA because I had a gig with a friend in Mexico for a week!! Now this was a trip of a lifetime, I had such a fucking phenomenal time. I was at an extreme high. I then was back in LA to celebrate my anniversary with my girlfriend and then fly back to PA. For the remaining month of Dec. 2017 I fell into a depression again. It was cold and icy and afraid to drive in the snow I didn’t leave the house. Christmas came, New Years came, Jenny’s birthday came, and I didn’t manage to make it out to see her. We have been face-timing/calling each other but it’s not the same. Dec. 31st 2017 I had messaged the group that we were looking for apartments with and two of them had flaked and already gotten an apartment. That leaves me with one person left and he wants to move to Atlanta instead. There is no 100% saying he will but if everything there is better for him I don’t want to force him to move to LA just for me. This has made me VERY depressed and to the point of not wanting to get out of bed because I feel like every option I have left is a failure and at this point i’m just done altogether. It’s veery frustrating for me to have gone through this several times and have it fail. I don’t know what else is left to do or what will happen, but if I don’t get to LA or leave this state soon I WILL GO MORE INSANE THAN I’VE BECOME.
I hope everything works out, but if there’s one thing i’ve learned since graduating, that’s not going to fucking happen.

I'm Married To A Divorce Attorney. This Is What Our Marriage Is Like
Divorce attorneys are experts on marriage. After all, every day in their offices, they see the petty squabbles and simmering issues that can easily bring down a long-term relationship.
What have they learned from their day jobs? We recently asked family law attorneys from across the country to share how their own marriages have been affected by their jobs and clients. To get a balanced account, we asked their spouses to weigh in, too! See what they had to say below:
Karen Covy, a divorce attorney and coach in Chicago, Illinois:
“I’ve been with my husband for 10 years and married for eight. I don’t take anything for granted. I’ve seen a lot of relationships that went south just because someone stopped paying attention to them. I see a lot of small mistakes that build into big problems. I’ve learned from the pain I witness every day. I consciously work on avoiding those mistakes myself. I try not to let my professional stress bleed into my personal life and I try not to cross-examine my husband. But I’m human!”
Her spouse, Vit Homolka:
“It really doesn’t make much difference what profession my wife is in. She’s a strong woman and I like that. It’s true that sometimes when we’re talking, she hits me with her ‘lawyer’s logic.’ Our discussions get broken down into points and sub-points with supporting evidence. When she flips into lawyer-mode, it can feel like you’re in a court room. But, I know who she is inside. Her profession is not the primary thing in our marriage.”
Margaret Klaw, a divorce attorney in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:
“I’ve been married for 34 years and for 30 of them, I’ve been a divorce lawyer. You might think I’d be deeply cynical about the institution of marriage. But you would be totally wrong. I, along with many of my colleagues in the family law bar, are deep appreciators of marriage. I think that is because we, more than most people, truly understand the value of family. We know it’s what gives meaning to people’s lives because we experience firsthand the depth of the pain when it doesn’t work out. And I know that has made me a better spouse and parent. I’m tolerant of small problems and differences because I am so acutely aware of the big picture, of how unimportant those differences may be when compared to the potential cataclysm of divorce. I have to admit, though, that I’ve heard this from my husband more than once during an argument: ‘Stop cross examining me!’ But really, if that’s all he has to complain about, he has no idea how good he has it.”
Her spouse, Alan Metcalfe:
“I may have just a few more complaints but I share my attorney wife’s perspective on marriage. I also love hearing about how badly couples behave (no names, of course!) in court, marvel at how generous her clients can occasionally be with their estranged spouses in the name of their children, and often think how lucky I am to be in a solid marriage. I also know that I would be screwed if I tried to divorce her because she is the only person I would want to represent me in court.”
Alison Patton, a divorce attorney and mediator in La Jolla, California:
“You would think that with all I’ve seen and learned through the years, I’d be great at marriage and not make the same mistakes divorcing clients have made. Not always the case. For years, John’s common line to me when we were having a marital spat was, ‘Can’t you just use your mediator skills for a goddamned minute and try to understand my perspective?!? And stop interrupting me!’ What I’ve learned from being in this profession is we all make the same mistakes in marriage. Some of us are just lucky enough to have the marriage survive until we figure it out. I think we made it through the rocky stretches because John is as strong a person as I am. He’s an attorney too and he held his ground. Even when we were furious with one another, we never lost mutual respect. I’d be lost without him.”
Her spouse, John Thickstun:
“I’d been divorced for about a year when Alison and I met and started dating. I proposed a few months later. My friends asked me, why are you getting married again? And to a family law attorney!? So I explained, ‘This will guarantee that it will last. It has to!’ All kidding aside, divorce attorneys are participants in the end of a chapter -– the death of a relationship. But if they’re like Alison, they are also witness to the beginning of a new chapter -– a rebirth of sorts. Guiding people through the divorce process creates wisdom if you’re open and paying attention. Alison pays attention. She brings the wisdom she’s learned to our relationship. I love her more today than the day we were married over 18 years ago.”
Christian Denmon, a divorce attorney in Tampa, Florida:
“Our situation is a little different: I’m a full-time divorce attorney. My wife does divorce work, but it is a minority of her practice. We apply what we learn from our practices to our relationship and it helps steer us on the right track. And I think, as we transition from what divorce lawyers call a short-term marriage to a medium-length marriage (we have been married seven years), we are still on strong footing. Much of it is thanks to her!”
His spouse, Nicole Denmon:
“My husband listens more to other women’s problems than mine. The emergency phone calls at night and on the weekends used to bother me. I used to ask lots of questions as to why a female client needed to talk to him so badly at 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday night. But then I listened to his conversations. Some were true emergencies and others were him just be an attentive lawyer who knew when that his client needed to talk and needed advice right then. Although it did not constitute an emergency to him or me, the person on the other line truly believed that it was. I have come to learn that a good divorce attorney must be attentive and on call if a client needs to speak with them. I know that my husband does not always want to return a phone call, but he puts himself in the position of his client that is experiencing one of the most traumatic experiences one can go through: divorce.”
Nancy R. Van Tine, a divorce attorney in Boston, Massachusetts:
“Stu talked me into going to law school while he was studying for the bar exam. Four years later we started our own firm. I didn’t choose family law. I backed into it. I was the only female lawyer in my location when we hung out our shingle, and the divorce clients came as a result. And they kept coming, and I loved doing it. Stu and I worked as a team. He did a lot of my legal research and all my appellate writing in the early years. We’d discuss strategy, law and the clients all the time. I think we were more careful of each other in our marriage as a result. Marriage and divorce law have been a fun partnership.”
Her spouse, Stuart Van Tine:
“Yep, I’ve been married to a divorce lawyer for 52 years. She wasn’t a lawyer for the first 14. I’d been an attorney for five years when she was sworn in and we opened our own shop. We later joined a larger firm together; I retired, she’s still there. For us, practicing law together was fun. My end was stodgy bank and real estate work. Her practice seemed to bring new and amazing bits of insanity every day. What I remember most is her ability to keep her composure where very few people could, like laughing along with our staff at the death threat left on our answering machine or the court battle over custody of a stuffed parrot. Those were happy days.”
Katherine Eisold Miller, a divorce attorney in New Rochelle, New York:
“Divorce lawyers hear some pretty crazy stories and we know what destroys relationships. Knowing what destroys them gives us a window into how to nurture and preserve our partnerships. On the other hand, we also know how to protect ourselves and our assets and that could be pretty scary if things weren’t going so well.”
Her spouse, Richard Heller:
“I’ve been married to a divorce attorney for 18 years. From the beginning I needed clear boundaries between work and relationship ― and no prenup. Prenups look to me like a self-fulfilling prophecy, like you’re planning the way out when you have not even begun while to my attorney bride, it just made sense to get clear on financial boundaries. Keeping communications from becoming ‘litigious’ is an ongoing practice for both of us. I often joke that ‘I’m married to a divorce lawyer, I don’t mess with her,’ but I actually find my spouse appreciates what an amazing marriage we have because she has seen so many marriages that were less than that. She works long hours and I miss her terribly, but our time together is always sweet.”
Daniel E. Clement, a divorce attorney in New York City:
“As a divorce attorney, my problem is not making my clients’ issues mine. While I am sympathetic, I have to remain detached to keep my objectivity and maintain my sanity. I certainly don’t want to bring their problems home with me. That said, I can use my client’s issues as life lessons. I can identify the mistakes they made in their relationships, in raising their children, in their decision making, and consciously modify my behavior so as not to follow them. I do not want to be someone’s divorce client.”
His spouse, Michelle Schwartz Clement:
“Most of the time, Dan seems immune to the stresses of the day. Yes, there are days he brings it home, but what successful professional doesn’t do so?”
