SSA Mallory Kagan asks you to outline your career with the FBI - purposefully using your first name instead of using your title. It keeps the students guessing and paying attention.
Plus, the payoff when they figure out who you are is the best part of the whole lecture.
“My career at the FBI is more like a big tree than a path or a journey.”
You look out over the classroom - blue shirts abound - and take a deep breath to center yourself.
You’re used to giving this lecture with Aaron, but this is your first fall without him, which also means that this is the first academy class who won’t know him in person.
They’ll only hear tell of the legend SSA Aaron Hotchner was stabbed nine times, lost his wife to a serial killer, and kept going. You know they’ll hear stories about his severity, his general lack of sunniness, hear rumors about the way he laughs with his children, his wife, and nobody else.
You know the older agents tell stories about you, too. They say you ‘tamed’ Hotch, made him a little nicer. They might even say they’ve seen him smile at you, or they’ve seen you give him hell in public.
Aaron Hotchner is practically a myth, now, only supported by your reputation, tall tales from academy classes of yesteryear, and his own legacy.
That retired bastard currently sits in your house with your kids, right on his fine behind, very likely falling into boredom-addled insanity.
“Everything that I am - a parent, a wife, a friend, and an agent - is because of my work with the Behavioral Analysis Unit over the past nineteen years. My unit is my family, and I can’t get rid of them. Just like our own families, we love to hate each other.”
The room laughs, and you know you have them hooked.
“Jokes aside, I would encourage you to get to know your colleagues. Each relationship I built within my unit put a root into the ground, made the proverbial tree stronger - to extend the metaphor. I work with very few of the same people I started with, but I feel as steady and supported as I did back when they called us ‘The Elite Eight.’”
You chuckle a little, clicking through your introductory slide to showcase a photo of the BAU in 2012. You point to each of them as you speak.
“SSA Emily Prentiss, current unit chief of the Behavior Analysis unit and former head of the Interpol London office, responsible for taking down one of the most prolific international arms dealers in modern history.”
The room is quiet, a little awestruck, so you add, “She’s a bit of a big deal.”
They laugh.
“SSA Derek Morgan - you’ll probably hear stories about how he survived the Boston bombing with SSA Gideon in 2005, but don’t worry. He wasn’t there. He was with his momma in Chicago, celebrating her birthday.”
Another laugh.
You’ve honed this routine over the last five years, knowing what to add, when to pause, what to cut if the students lose interest.
“That said, SSA Morgan is one of the best profilers I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Today, he’s a consultant for DC Metro SWAT and is otherwise retired.”
Continuing down the line, “SSA Jennifer Jareau - JJ. Former communications liaison for the BAU, State Department, and DoD. She currently serves with the BAU as a profiler. If any of you are interested in PR or media relations, find an opportunity to speak with her about her experience. Her husband, Will, is a detective with the DC Metro Police and has plenty of stories of his own.”
A student raises a hand, and you give her the go-ahead.
“Sorry for interrupting -“
You stop her. “You didn’t interrupt. You raised your hand. Don’t apologize for taking up space.”
She smiles a little. “Okay. Um, I’m curious. How many people in your unit are married and/or have children? My understanding is that the work-life balance can be difficult in heavy-travel positions like the BAU.”
“It can absolutely be a challenge.” You look back at the photo. “In the course of my career, six of my colleagues have been or were already married and all of them went on to have children.”
“And you?”
You laugh a little, forgetting you’re alone up here. “Right.”
The class laughs, and you point yourself out on the slide.
“I still had my maiden name when this photo was taken, but now I share five children and a last name with SSA Aaron Hotchner.” You throw your thumb at Aaron’s likeness on the screen again for good measure.
You check in with SSA Kagan to make sure you can share everything you usually do with Aaron present - your marriage was often the punchline of your lectures, letting you toe the line of humor a little farther than you normally would.
She nods, a little smile on her face.
“While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend dating your unit chief or marrying your section chief -“ you pause, holding your hands up in surrender to the echo of laughter “- even if they are the same person - you can certainly find the best people without looking too hard.”
Hands shoot up into the air, but that always happens. It’s around this time people start asking the good questions. The people from their course materials and the people in front of them start to link together.
They also figure out that you’re Agent Hotchner. That Agent Hotchner - the one married to the Agent Hotchner.
You look out over the crowd again. “I know you have lots of questions, and I’m happy to confirm or deny any rumors about myself or my family, but,” you pause for dramatic effect. “Hold them for now - you’ll want to know the players before you ask the questions.”
Hands drop, but pens start moving. You continue down the line, skipping over Aaron.
“SSA David Rossi, a founding member of the BAU in the late 1980’s. He worked closely with SSA Jason Gideon, developing a database that we use to this day - one that outlines signatures, modus operandi, and victimology of modern serial killers. SSA Rossi is also well-known for his books - ten of them, in fact, that cover what we do in a kind of…”
You search for a word.
“Conversational format. He retired a couple of years ago, and is a full-time grandpa to all 16 of the BAU offspring.”
A few scattered chuckles pass through the room.
“And then we have Dr. Spencer Reid - I could enumerate his degrees, but we don’t have that kind of time. He’s the smartest person I’ve ever met, and remains an asset to the BAU in the field today.”
You click to another slide - a photo of all of you taken a few weeks ago.
“SSA Matthew Simmons - retired from the United States Army and former member of the FBI International Response Team, or IRT. He’s been with the BAU for ten years now. Like Dr. Reid and SSA Prentiss, he knows multiple languages - which comes in handy.” You look out and raise your eyebrows. “I hope all of you did well in your Spanish classes in high school - you might need it.”
Another laugh.
“SSA Luke Alvez and Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia are another pair that come from, shall we say, nontraditional backgrounds. While Garcia is no longer with the BAU, SSA Alvez is also celebrating his tenth year with us this fall.”
A student raises his hand, and you call on him.
“Isn’t Penelope Garcia the hacker known as The Black Queen? I learned about her work when I was at MIT.”
You snort. “Nice way to slip in you went to MIT, there, bud.” You pause, waiting for the ruckus to die down as the student in question turns bright red. “But yes. Her experience was invaluable to our team. Just to keep up, we stole an analyst from the NSA to replace her - nobody else could cut the mustard.”
You look back, stepping forward and pacing as you speak.”And finally, Dr. Tara Lewis. Formerly working in the FBI Counsel’s office as a forensic psychologist, she joined our team on cases where specific pathologies were in play before becoming a full-fledged member of our team.
“So, as you can see, there are so many varied qualities we look for in profilers, and your own path will be informed by the skills you develop, your temperament, and your dedication to the work itself. There’s no right way to be an agent, and when you leave the academy in five weeks, the whole world of the bureau will be open to you.”
Clicking back to your introductory slide, you turn to the front of the classroom. “I know all my colleagues well enough to take any questions you may have about their careers and paths through the bureau. For any questions I can’t answer, I am happy to direct you to them with the understanding they may not get back to you due to our caseload. I’ll take your questions now.”
Hands shoot up into the air, and you specifically call on the student in the back - the one you know has a question about Aaron.
“So, when you say SSA Aaron Hotchner, you mean the same one that worked the Boston Reaper case for ten years?”
SSA Kagan checks in with you, ready to shut him down, but you call her off.
“That’s right. SSAs Jareau, Morgan, Prentiss, Rossi, Dr. Reid, Miss Garcia, and I worked that case in its final year as well.”
“I have a follow-up if that’s okay.”
You tacitly give him leave to continue.
“How do you handle cases that get that… close? I know there were considerable...” He searches for the right word. “...challenges. How did you guys deal with that?”
Good question.
Returning to the podium, you lean heavily against it, lacing your fingers in front of you. “You’ve all read the Reaper case file, yes? It’s still included in the MCRT training courses?”
There are nods around the room, but you check in with Kagan anyway.
“The declassified version is covered,” She says. “They’re familiar with the full scope of the case.”
“Okay. So, as you all know…”
You remind them what happened, from 1998 to 2009, finally landing where the students want you. “And on November 23rd, 2009, Haley Reneé Hotchner was George Foyet’s 40th and final victim. She was thirty-nine years old. And she was my friend.”
The room is dead silent, all eyes on you, somber and attentive.
“The case was personal. It became personal because Foyet forced our hands. He attacked Agent Hotchner in his home and then targeted his family. So, the question is, how do we deal with that? Right?”
Even Kagan’s watching you closely. It’s the first time you’ve covered this case without the rest of your team. In your joint lectures with Aaron, the case is off-limits for questions. She’s never heard you tell the story in your own words.
You take a breath. “And the answer is… you don’t.”
There are some confused faces, so you elaborate. “There isn’t anything you can do to push the case away from you - that’s how people get hurt. In the meantime, you make adjustments. Agent Hotchner placed Agent Morgan in an interim unit chief position until the case was over, for the sake of his health and sanity. We chased down every lead, understanding that the faster we caught Foyet, the faster Haley and Jack, Agent Hotchner’s son, could come home.”
A young woman in front tentatively raises a hand, and you open a hand to her. “Yes?”
“What happened, you know, after?”
“We moved on as best we could. Going back to my original point -”
You leave the podium and take your place in the center of the floor again.
“- the trust you have in the people you work with can carry you through a great many things. And not all of you will see horror every day - but some of you will.”
You pause for a moment, hoping this is the part that really sinks in for them.
“Always have something to come home to. Always have something or someone that brings you peace, that can take you away from the work.”
+++
You set your things down and walk through the door, immediately accosted by two almost-eight-year-olds and their over-eager little brother.
“Momma!”
You haul Elliot onto your hip and kiss Sophia’s head as Caroline burrows into your side. “Hi, darlings! Did you already have dinner?”
Sophia moves to answer, but Aaron’s voice shoots around the corner. “Yes!”
With a smile, you seek him out, dragging the girls along with you. Lo and behold, Aaron’s at the sink, washing dishes. Isaac’s supervising - sitting on the counter, swinging his feet.
Aaron gets a kiss on the cheek from you as you pass and he turns over his shoulder, chasing you until you peck him on the lips, Elliot squished between you. Your son squirms, and you set him on the ground to chase after his sisters. Isaac hops off the counter likely off to investigate the happenings before retreating to his room for the rest of the evening.
For once, you’re left alone.
“How was your lecture?”
Your arms free, you wrap around him and rest your full weight against his chest as he backs himself into the counter. “Went well. Missed you, though.”
The corner of his mouth tips up. “Did they ask about Foyet?”
“Mhmm. It was a good segue into trusting your team and building each other up, knowing when to step back, etcetera.”
He nods. “Good way to bring it back around. How’s Kagan?”
“She’s good, loving it, as always.”
“Think she’s ever gonna retire?” He asks, tucking into your neck.
You laugh as he presses kisses to the underside of your jaw. “Probably not.”
Aaron leans back to look at you, bringing his hand to your face to brush over your cheekbone. “Are you ever gonna retire?”
“Probably not.”
“What if,” he says, his hands slipping into your back pockets, “you retired in…” He does the math in his head. “Thirteen-ish years and I make it worth your while.”
“Oh yeah? Worth my while? And you’ll be, what, a hundred years old?”
His eyes roll so hard you’re sure he could see his own brain. You pull him down for a kiss, but it doesn’t stop him from mumbling, “Give me a fuckin’ break,” against your mouth.
“Never.”

[Ledger!Joker x Reader]
Words: 3,123
Warnings: None?
Requested: Yes / No
Summary: You’re given the opportunity to reunite with your childhood sweetheart Jack, who now goes by the Joker. Is he the same mischievous boy you left behind, or is he the sadistic mass murderer the media portrays him as.
A/N~ This is sort of a sequel to my fic Longing? I will try getting to all my amazing requests soon, however I can’t promise anything. I’ve had some health complications due to my mental health and am trying to become healthy again. I’m getting back to where I need to be but some outside occurrence's are hindering that. I apologize to anyone I may have let down.
Tumblr media
Your life had been fairly mellow since the last time you’d seen Jack on the television, though the shock was still just as present. Jack was the person you had always considered to be the love of your life, he was always sweet and thoughtful when you two were together. He never raised his voice, never raised a hand, and never made you feel unloved. The person you had seen on that television was not the same person you had left in Gotham, Jack seemed somewhat deranged now, wreaking havoc on the entire city. Part of you understood his grievance, his actions mostly costing those in wealthy position, it was clear what he wanted - tear down the corrupt city and take down those in power. He risked innocent lives in the process however, and that was enough to scare you of the man you had once loved with your whole heart. You doubted he cared, doubted he even knew you were here in Gotham, why would he? You left him years ago- but that made you ask yourself, what if you got caught in one his schemes? What if you were in one of the ferries last week when he decided to have his own social experiment play out just to prove his point.
You were conflicted and confused to say the absolute least after you caught the last glimpse of the man you loved so much. From the brief snippets of gossip you’d overheard at work, he was now back in Arkham Asylum- though your coworkers argued that he most likely would be broken out before the week is out. Hearing about where he was had sparked something in you, the need to see Jack. You had hoped you’d bump into him after moving back, but seeing as he was the most wanted criminal in Gotham, it seemed beyond unlikely. With him being locked up, you had the chance to possibly see him again, get the urge out of your system before it consumed you entirely. You were unsure whether or not Arkham would let you see him, but you knew internally how upset you’d be if you didn’t at least try.
You had finished your typical 9 hour shift at The Gotham Zoo, working as the head of the exotic mammals department- the last being killed in an apparent incident with Killer Croc. You let out a shaky sigh as you took in the large gates standing in front of you, the words Arkham Asylum written atop in meticulous metalwork. Your head swiveled to the side when a buzzing sounded through the air, a voice emitting from a small intercom to the left of the large doors. “What can I help you with ma’am?” You turned to face the small camera and speaker, a soft yet nervous smile appearing across your lips as you responded, “I’m here to visit a patient. Are visiting hours still open?” You knew for certain hours of the day the asylum was on lower security, allowing visitors to certain inmates though deep down you knew the chances of seeing Jack were slim considering how high-class of a criminal he was.
“One hour left before visiting ours are over. I’ll open the gate now, enter to the first building on your left and they’ll sort out your visitation at the desk. If you have any weapons or contraband on your person, security will take the force needed to remove you from the premises, am I clear?”
Your eyes widened at the idea of sneaking in anything dangerous and you nodded in respond, “Yes sir. Thank you.” You turned away from the camera, instead focusing on the large metal gates that were now opening before you, giving you a clear view of the entire asylum. You walked nervously through the gates, several armed guards lining the courtyard as you headed towards the visitation desk. Once in the building you relaxed slightly, the security having frisked and questioned you at the door, all that was left was to attempt to get a visitation in for Jack. A kind looking elderly woman sat behind the bulky and outdated white computer that sat upon her desk, her acrylics tapping quickly upon the keys of her keyboard. It wasn’t until you cleared your throat to gain her attention that she finally looked up to you, readjusting her glasses before speaking up.
“Good afternoon, what can I do for you?”
You smiled softly at her before forcing you words out, “I was hoping to visit an inmate today if possible? I’m not sure how your visitations work here so I’m kind of unprepared.”
She looked at you as if this was a regular occurrence for her, simply nodding with a smile, “Of course, is your inmate new? Seems like we get more and more everyday.”
“Um, no. From my understanding he’s been in here quite a few times, at least that's what I’ve heard.”
“Alright dearie, and what’s the patients name?”
You in all honesty weren’t sure what name he was under in their systems, so you went with the one you’d been hearing the most recently. “The Joker?”
The woman stopped everything she was doing and looked at you with a perplexed expression. “The Joker?” She took a moment to recollect herself before shaking her head, “We can’t let anyone in unless they are someone personal to the Joker, family only I’m afraid. He’s too high risk to let anyone but family see him.” You looked at her with confusion for a moment before replying with an unwavering voice, “I’m his fiancé, please.” She looked you up and down for a second before flicking her eyes to her computer screen. She knew nobody but someone truly close to the Joker would know his name, even his closest henchman didn’t know his name from what the GCPD had said. The hospital however, had his blood work and files from his youth at Gotham general, his name was in their files. “What’s the patients name?”
You looked at her with a soft smile and replied quickly and short, “Jack. Jack Napier. Please, I just recently moved back here and just learned of this whole Joker business. I need to see him.” She let out a sigh and nodded, “You pass the routine check for relatives and associates, I have to give you a warning though. You’ll have to sign this contract, it means no matter what happens between you and the patient during visitation, Arkham Asylum is not responsible for what happens. This includes bodily harm, serious injuries, trauma, and death.” You only nodded and signed the form, “Can I see him now?”
Your heart was racing at the thought of seeing him again, though you couldn’t deny the dread that bubbled up inside of you at the prospect of coming face to face with someone unrecognizable. You wanted to maintain your positive image of Jack, the image of that charming school boy who never failed to sweep you off your feet, the boy who got into fights when he saw someone even look at you off, who never failed to make you fall deeper into love with him every time his lips met yours. The daunting reality that the boy you had fallen in love with all those years ago could be a thing of the past, a new darkness enveloping the person you cherished so deeply.
After the woman had made a phone call notifying guards of the visitation, you were escorted by two security men to one of the higher levels in the institution. The higher you rose, the more loud and prominent the screams of patients became- it was as though you were ascending into the madness itself as the elevator rose higher and higher. You ended up getting off at level 5 of the large building, the security taking you to a large metal door with a closed peep slot. The larger of the two guards turns to you while the other works on unlocked the door, “You have 30 minutes before we come in to get you. The door will remain locked for the entirety of those thirty minutes. Do you understand?” You nodded shakily in response before turning to enter the room as the door was swung open, creaking eerily as it shut behind you.
You remained silent as you took in the sight in front of you, it was him, no doubt about it. His head was bowed, looking down at his cuffed hands, completely ignoring your presence in the room. He was exactly the same as when you had left, well almost with a few exceptions. His hair was wavy and shoulder length, freshly washed, and the almond brown color you remembered so distinctly, though a few blotchy patches of green remained- long nights spent in each others arms as your fingers combed through that exact head of hair. You couldn’t see his eyes due to his gaze facing downwards but you could only guess they were the same honey color as before, green specks littering the dark brown ring on the outside of his iris, though you had to wonder if they held the same kindness, love, and mischief as before. He occupied one of the two chairs inside the room, a table dividing the two seats, and his body was in the typical white uniform you had seen the other patients wearing around the hospital.
You were taken out of your own mind when you heard a breathy laugh escape the man sitting before you, his head still bowed. “I have to give it to you, a lot of people have tried to get past security to see me and so far you’re the only one to have done it without shooting a few people along the way. So what do you want? Money? Power? Everything comes with a price, nothing comes for free.” You made your way slowly towards him, pulling out the chair and taking a seat opposite of his larger figure. “I was just hoping to see you.” You could hear the almost silent intake of breath he made before raising his head, those all too familiar brown eyes meeting you e/c ones. He silently stared at you, and as much as you hated to admit it, for the first time ever you couldn’t tell what he was thinking. “Long time no see Jack.”
You watched as his eyes darkened ever so slightly, his lips twisting into a deep-set frown as he took in your words. “What are you doing here?” His words surprised you, they were laced with what seemed to frustration and disbelief. You weren’t expecting a warm reception after learning of his new career, but you expected him to at least show some sliver of recognition. “I’m sorry?” His voice growled out his words again, his words a low tone as if biting back anger. “What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to see you. I missed you Jack. I heard you were in Arkham while at work and figured I was most likely to see you if I came in for visitation, it didn’t seem likely for me to just bump into you like I’d hoped I would.” Joker looked you up and down and clicked his tongue in annoyance, “You shouldn’t have come bac to Gotham doll, it’s not safe anymore. I told you not to come back after you moved away.” You rolled your eyes at his words, he was talking to you like you were a child. “Yeah, well you also said you would get out of here soon after me. Looks that means we both didn’t hold up to each others expectations.” Your gaze flicked from looking at him to your hands which were fiddling nervously in your lap. “What are you doing Jack?”
The man sitting before you let out one of his signature cackles at your question, “What do you mean?” You let out a sigh, your eyebrows knitting together in frustration. “You’re killing people, destroying the city, wreaking havoc. What is it all for? What do you gain?” Jack shrugged his shoulder lightly, his gaze meeting yours silently. “Because it’s not boring, and those I despise are being taken down like flies.” Your hand subconsciously reached across the table, interlocking tightly with Jacks own handcuffed one. “Why not leave? You clearly have the opportunity and funds to, why not build a life away from here. I know you probably already have a plan to escape from here given your history. Why not start a new life away from all this devastation and death? Like we had planned? Away from the violence and corruption.”
Jacks thumb had subconsciously began running soothingly across the top of your hand, an old habit he had when you two were together in your youth. “I have mission here doll, the chaos is fair and that's what Gotham deserves.” You let out a sigh and gazed into the honey pools that were his eyes. “Gotham deserves to burn, but you don’t need to be a part of it. I came back here hoping to find you, start where we left off, get back the years I lost when I moved. Run away, please Jack.”
Jacks hand released from your and beckoned you over to where he was sitting, and without a second thought you complied, standing to walk over to him. He raised his cuffs into the air, allowing you to take a seat on top of his lap, the cuffs lowering, trapping your body near his. You instinctively leant against his strong form, your head hidden in the crook of his neck while his arms held you tightly against him. He smelt the same as odd as that was: vanilla, greasepaint, fir, and the slightest scent of cigarettes and gunpowder. “I can’t leave, I have a lot of big plans and unfinished business to attend to doll.” You could feel a small piece of you shatter at his words. You were so close to him, so close to the future you’d be dreaming of, a one where you and Jack could go back to the way things were all those years ago.
“Please don’t hurt me like this- not again. Please Jack. I’ve missed you, more than you could even begin to comprehend. I need you in my life.” You felt a hum pass through his throat as he soaked in your words. This was the side of him you knew, the side you remembered so fondly. He was caring, a bit rough around the edges, and loyal beyond measure- this was the side of him most people wouldn’t believe existed due to his public history of violence and insanity. But to you, this wasn’t the Joker. This was Jack Napier, the boy you grew up with, your first relationship, your first, your first heartbreak, your first everything. To you, Jack had always been everything. He was your past, present, and future. The idea of having a future without him absolutely devastated you, you wanting nothing more than love him completely.
You felt a rumbling groan escape from Jacks throat as he soaked in your words. “The things you do to me doll.” He licked his lips quickly, his teeth chewing on the inside of his scars afterwards as if thinking through what he was going to say. You pulled back from his neck and instead rested your hand on his shoulder, your eyes looking deeply into his. “Please Jack, don’t leave me alone again.” His eyes seemed stoic as he looked to you, “Doll, I’m not the Jack you knew anymore you have to realize that.” You nodded in response, your eyes not leaving his, “But you are, your actions and words are proving that to me. If you were cold, sadistic, and blood thirsty like the news makes you out to be, then why did you welcome me into your arms so easily. Why haven’t you attacked me? Yelled at me? Why haven’t you pushed me away? Why do I see the same spark mischief in your eyes that I did when we first met in third grade. Why do you still show the same compassion and care you’ve always showed me. You held my hand the way you always did late nights when we’d stargaze on your apartment roof. You’re changed but you’re still my Jack, even if nobody else sees it. Sure you have a few more scars than when I left, and your eyes hold a new darkness to them, but that hasn’t changed you, not where it counts.” Your hand made its way up to his cheeks, your fingers carefully brushing against his mangled cheeks, your eyes holding all the love in the world as you gazed upon the all to familiar man who sat in front of you.
“When you break out, please find me. I live on South 102nd street in the old Bowers building, third floor, fourth window to right from the street, right near the fire escape. Please just come home, even if it’s just for a little. I need you Jack.” He didn’t respond, only leaned forward and captured your lips with his own, your eyes immediately closing instinctually as your body pressed flush against his. He never had been one to profess his love, even when he was younger. You’d come to learn his love language was that of physical reaffirmation, showing you rather than telling. Jack always did feel that actions spoke louder than words, the physical aspect reaffirming his feelings more than words ever could. You knew this was his way of agreeing, of reciprocating your words. He needed you, he missed you, he loved you. You didn’t need him to say those words aloud for you to know- the kiss told you everything you needed to know.
The two of you parted just as the door creaked open signaling that your visitation was over. A voice boomed from across the room, the voice of one of the security guards from earlier. “Times up, come on.” You laid a quick kiss to Jacks lips before whispering quickly in his ear, “I’ll see you soon love.” He hummed in response, showing you he heard you and acknowledged your parting words. You cast one final glance at him as you were lead out of the room by the guard. For the first time since moving to Gotham, you felt some hope for the future, your future with Jack. It wasn’t going to be the one you’d imagined, but any future with him in it was worth it in your eyes. He was yours, and you were his. That's all you need to feel secure.
End
Time: 2 hours 2 minutes 26
This was not grammar checked or proof read before posting.
Final Note: I’m not very happy with how I portrayed Jack in this or how it turned out. But hey, at least I wrote something down. Maybe I’ll rewrite it at some point, maybe not.

Transformers Generation One: A Seeker's Triangle: Chapter 05: Adjustment
The drive back to the squishy being’s home had been strange. First Starlit Meadow had learned that Zett’s species were known as ‘humans’. Adjusting to driving on the pavement road wasnt all that different from Cybertron, which in itself was a release, but after being forced to stay in her newly scanned alternative mode in what Zett called a ‘garage’ was beginning to get on her nervous system.
The first couple of nano cycles had been fine, but after awakening out of what she could only assume had originally been stasis lock, hunger had begun to gnaw at her. She didn’t know how long it had been since she had consumed energon and sitting in this human’s ‘garage’ was working her up more than she liked.
When she had first tried transforming back to her bipedal mode, he’d asked, no, begged, her not to, claiming that he didn’t want to risk her being found out. The thought of that was annoying enough, but she chose to take his word for that. She had to stay out from underneath the Autobots’ radar, at least until she could figure out what to do next.
Zett had a point in her staying in this ‘car’ mode that he’d called her current form. She didn’t have a reflective surface to overlook her said car mode, but from the Earth vehicle she had scanned, she could assume that her frame had followed its usual protocol to turn her into an exact copy of her scan, save for the colouring. No matter which form she took, her colour scheme always stayed the proud black and green she had known since the moment she’d first learned the name of her two colours.
Every morning Zett came into the garage, bid her farewell to attend the Earth version of an academy, then he’d return at night after attending to work on the site he’d found her at. She wasn’t sure if Zett was keeping her a secret from the Autobots like he had promised to do but considering that she still remained incognito in the small, cramped wooden room, she could only assume that he did. Even if the Autobots had won the war against the Decepticons, there was no chance that they would simply leave a stray Decepticon out in the open. They would have dealt with her, one way or another.
Each day that passed, the only indication of time passing being Zett’s visits, seemed to take longer and longer. At first she had planned to wait, to lay low to try and come up with a plan, but her tanks were churning, demanding to be filled. When she had requested Zett bring her some energon, he only looked at her like she had lost her processor. She hated that look. It was the same one Astrotrain had given her once when she had snapped at him to keep his servos to himself when he thought she’d give him what he wanted because she was the only Decepticon femme at base. He had backed off, only after she had to show what her arm blades were capable of.
She should have checked them, ensured that they were still locked firmly into her arm plating, but that would require transforming, something she didn’t have the energy for. Whilst waiting on Zett to return, babbling on and on about how his day was, she took stasis naps in an attempt to conserve what little energon she still had within her. she contemplated forcing herself back into stasis lock to try and conserve more but thought it to be useless. If she did that, she’d be nothing more than an average car, as Zett put it.
She didn’t tell Zett about her thoughts on conserving what she had, but when he told her that not everything moving on the road was an Autobot or Decepticon, questions had popped up one right after the other. She must have spent a good amount of time asking him about his planet, which Zett had decided to sum up for her through video files he called documentaries and homework.
Earth was strange. There was no doubt in her processor about that, but the way Zett spoke about it, Starlit Meadow couldn’t help but find it interesting. She missed Cybertron, just like any other Cybertronian that had possibly gone off planet at some point in their functional life, but there was no use in longing for a planet she had no hopes of returning to. If she ran out of energon, then she definitely didn’t have any hope.
Letting her processor wander, Starlit Meadow felt ashamed of herself for not noticing that Zett had returned, rolling up the metallic garage door as he did. Usually the wide door made enough noise for her to at least be aware of his presence, no longer detectable by the systems she had forced herself to shut down in an attempt to conserve what she had.
“Hey Star. How are you holding up?” Zett asked as he rolled the door back down behind him, a rusted maroon coloured barrel beside him. From the sound of it, there was something inside, possibly a fluid of some sort. It stunk.
Shifting her sideview mirror, she caught sight of the human. If it weren’t for the concerned look on his face, she would have laughed, if she could manage more than a dry chuckle. He must have noticed her eyeing the barrel with her mirror when she didn’t respond because the next moment he was pushing it over towards her, leaving behind a steel-curling screeching noise as he did. She would have scolded him for it, but only watched instead, her curiosity getting the better of her, especially after what he said next.
“I brought you a little something. A little pick-me-up if you will,” Zett said once he had the barrel right beside her. “I know its not exactly that energon stuff you need, but I figured that since you’re, well, a car-”
“Transformer,” she felt herself correcting before her CPU registered her words as they played through her radio. An interesting device, one that she had thought about using to try and contact her old teammates but absolved from in case the Autobots were monitoring radio frequencies.
“Right, sorry. Anyway, since you won’t let me ask someone for help, and said that your kind needs this ‘energon’ stuff to survive, I might have had an idea. You see, when the Autobots set up base here, the government let them have stuff like oil and that kind of thing, so maybe it’s the same thing? I don’t know exactly, but this is the best I could think of,” Zett rambled on, barely able to keep her attention as he scratched the back of his helm, no, head, he had told her when she had asked about the strange covering he called ‘hair’.
“Get to the point,” she said, groaning inwardly upon realisation that she might have used the energy she needed to talk where she could have been conserving it.
“Hn? O-Oh, of course. I, uh… do you remember when I found you almost a week ago?” he asked, taking her silence as confirmation. “Well, I found this old oil barrel and thought that maybe you could… you know, drink it?”
“Oil?” She would have arched an optic ridge at the strange word if she had been in her other form.
“Yeah. I know you said you’re not a car, but it is still something cars use to get around. I thought that maybe it could help, at least until we figure out a way to get you some energon.”
She went quiet once more, this time for longer as her thoughts ran through her processing unit. Finally when she spoke, her voice was a bit more strained than she would have liked.
“Why are you doing this?”
This time it was Zett’s turn to go quiet. At first she thought that she might have fallen into stasis lock and was merely imagining his presence before his hand touched her side window. Her mirror readjusted itself so that she could see his face a little clearer. Due to her lack of fuelling, her vision had resorted to its basic function, making her see everything in a dark red hue, and not the once bright colours everything had originally been when she first onlined on this planet.
“Because… you’re my friend,” Zett said, a small smile spreading across his lips as his hand moved over her red-tined window, brushing away a spec of dust that she’d previously ignored. “That and you looked like you needed help. Something tells me you’re the stubborn sort that even if I went to the Autobots and told them were you were, you’d be out of here before we make it around the corner and the only way I’d see you again is when you come to kick my ass for it.”
She didn’t bother confirming or denying his assumption, leaning more towards the former guess herself.
“Anyway, I know its not the energon you need, but maybe it could help. From the looks of it, no one’s going to claim it anymore either. It’s probably been abandoned for more than a year already.”
Letting a sigh reverberate through her systems, Starlit Meadow put the last of her reserve tanks into forcing herself to transform into her bipedal mode. Usually when a protoform went through their very first transformation, it tended to hurt, only because their joints and mechanisms weren’t used to the process. After at least a stellar cycle of practice, the pain faded, never to be felt again, except apparently on a near empty fuel tank.
When her doors had shifted into her arms and her back end of her car form returned to a pair of legs, Starlit Meadow hunched over in the garage, the wooden building feeling even smaller than before as her hunched back touched the ceiling. How humans could stand living in such small spaces, she didn’t care to know, even if it was big compared to them.
Looking over to the barrel, she wasn’t all that keen on tasting this thing Zett called oil, but considering her situation, it was either go to the Autobots and hope to be helped or swallow her pride with the oil and hope for the best. This time she chose the latter option.
As much as it pained her, Starlit Meadow was relieved to see that at the very least, she still had the blades on her arms, something she had ever since Megatron first found her. The relief she felt was comforting as she used the one on her right to slice the top off the barrel.
The liquid inside was thick, and black, not at all the bright pink she was used to seeing in cube form whenever rations were divided up amongst her former team. She tried ignoring the smell as best as she could, wishing she’d chosen to disable her ol factory sensors as well.
From the corner of her optics she knew Zett was watching her, anxiously awaiting her reaction. She hesitated then tossed back the thick liquid in a big gulp, nearly gagging at the taste. She nearly snapped at the human that he was trying to clog her fuel lines when her tanks grumbled with the need to consume more. Before she knew it, she had swallowed half of the barrel’s contents. It wasn’t energon, that much was certain, but it was still comforting, filling.
“How is it?” Zett asked, taking a step towards her, although judging by the smile on his face, he seemed to be pretty well informed that his decision might have just helped her after all.
“Horrible,” Starlit Meadow admitted, finding a smile on her own lips as she looked down at the human, watching his facial expression fade at the realisation. Before she knew what was happening, she found her servo reaching over towards him, taking a gentle hold of the shoulder that she could crush so easily with a simple flick of a digit. “But… edible, as you humans say.”
Zett’s smile returned to his lips, the moment a pair of words she thought she’d never ever say again crossed her lips.
“Thank you.”

September 2018
Aziraphale’s bookshop had become quite the haven for me during my undergraduate studies. It was quaint and always quiet; due mostly to the fact that he scared off any customer that attempted to enter. He even tried to push me out the door until he realized I only needed a quiet space to read and had no money on hand to buy anything -- you know, college being prohibitively expensive and all.
I had found his shop by happenstance, but it seemed to be fate as there was no café near my small apartment that was quiet enough to work in. During my first few visits, I just browsed the shelves, picked up a novel, read it for a few hours on his window seat and then put it back exactly where he had filed it before. At first, I was worried that entering, but not buying anything would irritate him. However, I soon realized that he would prefer it if all his customers were that way. By my third visit, he introduced himself.
“Hello, Miss. Ummm…”
“Y/N” I offered, “My name is Y/N, but you’re welcome to call me Y/N/N if that’s too long,” I said, quite sheepishly. My name being as long as it is would often warrant questionable looks and I was having enough trouble making friends as it was.
“If your mother named you Y/N, then that is what I shall call you. It really is quite beautiful.” His eyes offered the most welcoming look I had received since moving to London. It was like a breath of fresh air. “My name is Aziraphale, it’s lovely to finally get acquainted.”
“Likewise, Aziraphale. Your name is also beautiful. It’s very unique.”
“Oh heavens, you are quite sweet,” he responded with a blush. “Well, seeing as we have now been properly introduced, might I interest you in a cup of tea? I’d love to know more about you as you seem to be a voracious reader like myself.”
I accepted almost immediately. It had been ages since I’d made friendly conversation with someone else. We talked about our favorite authors and genres to start. He seemed to find my love of The Divine Comedy amusing, which was an opinion I had never come across.
“I just think that Heaven and Hell would be much different.”
“Well tell me what you imagined!”
“Oh no, it’s silly, maybe another time.” He responded, brushing off my request.
We chatted like this for hours. I came to learn that some of his favorite things to read are ancient cookbooks. I never thought it could be that entertaining, but he explained to me that he enjoyed adapting the recipes and trying them out with modern twists. Our conversation then shifted to food. We gushed about the different restaurants we had been to and he gave me several recommendations to try. Before we knew it, it was ten o’clock.
“Oh my gosh,” I sighed, “I am so sorry I’ve stayed in your hair this long. I should let you close up shop.”
“Well seeing as I locked up three hours ago when I got up to start another kettle of hot water, I’d say you haven’t been in my hair at all.”
“Oh – I hadn’t noticed,” I responded with surprise. I don’t think I had been this taken with a conversation in months, maybe years. “Well, I should still be getting home. I have an essay to submit. I’ve been working on it for a few weeks now, and I need to finish it up and turn it in to my professor’s office in the morning.”
“An essay?” he inquired with excitement, “Whatever is it about?”
“Oh! Well if you’re truly interested, I’m writing about the practical applications for creative arts as a form of healthcare. I know it seems a bit out there, I just think it’s important. But everyone has their own opinions, so I understand if you think it’s silly…”
“My dear, that doesn’t sound silly at all!” He exclaimed. His enthusiasm filled me with quiet relief. Maybe I had finally found a friend in this new city. “I would simply love to read it – if you’d let me of course! It sounds fascinating.”
I thought about this a moment. I couldn’t decide if he was just encouraging me out of kindness or if he actually wanted to read my work. I scanned his face, but his blue eyes were filled with nothing but sincerity.
“Alright,” I conceded, “I’ll bring it in once I get it back from my professor.”
“Splendid! I cannot wait!”
His innocent and unmetered excitement made me feel, oddly enough, very hopeful. He seemed a rare breed of person in the current social climate. It was not often someone was so open about themselves and truly cared about the interests of others, especially those they had only seen and a handful of times and met mere hours earlier.
Feeling content with how the evening had played out, I wished him well and headed for the shop door. However, just as I pushed it open and heard the little bell chime, Aziraphale called back out to me.
“Y/N, my dear, are you going to walk home by yourself? It’s dreadfully dark outside. Please, allow me to escort you.”
“Oh no, I wouldn’t want to impose on your evening any further. It’s just a few blocks. I have walked back at this hour loads of times. You really don’t need to trouble yourself.”
“Oh no, I am a gentleman, and a gentleman would never let a lady put herself in danger.”
His comment was endearingly archaic. I carried pepper spray on my keychain and felt that I was much more likely to win a fight than this portly bookstore owner. I couldn’t deny, however, that not having to walk home on constant alert sounded nice.
“Well, I suppose it would be rude of me to deny your code of ethics then, wouldn’t it, sir?”
“Quite, mademoiselle,” he smiled warmly, “May I?” He asked, offering me his arm.
I took it quickly, and we walked together back to my tiny apartment continuing our lovely conversation. I normally wouldn’t allow someone who was virtually a stranger to know where I lived, especially considering I lived alone. Despite this, something in my heart told me I could trust him. It was the same feeling that told me I would be visiting the bookshop much more often.

Detective au??? Dude ur after my heart I wanna know
I WILL INDULGE YOU.... A LOT! Because who else will ask for this? No one, I say.
It’s a pegokita AU, and no one is shocked.
There’s also a Minake detective au but it’s very different and I could talk abt that in a whole dif post.
Alright, so the basic premise is that Minato and Akira work together to solve mysteries (one big one in particular). Pretty simple, but I have additional lil details/notes I know I’ve worked out for it, so I’ll share those!
Akira is a good cop that catches bad guys, but he does it... unconventionally. He breaks laws sometimes just to catch them, which... pisses off his supervisors a lot, especially if he does property damage and costs them money. So, one day, they all collectively decide that they want to get rid of him, and decide to put him on duty with this very obscure detective agency in town. Akira isn’t happy at all, he’s such a ween about it because “I’m your best unit and you’re sending me off to God only knows where? Wtf will I do over there? What?” but he’s in enough trouble as it is so they hope that the detective that’s going to act as his mentor in that agency will be able to straighten him out and keep him in line.
Enter Minato, the mentor they mentioned above. Minato owes Akira’s supervisor big time so he can’t possibly deny this request. However, all Minato is told is that “someone from the station will be working under you for a couple of months, consider him your new assistant” but even Minato knows that this is just code for “take this guy off our hands, we want to breathe” LMFAO, so Minato is expecting a troublemaker but God he has NO IDEA just how much trouble Akira will be.
Minato is a pretty well-known detective due to his track record. However, the hype about him died down ever since his partner was killed in a major tragedy (Sorry Aegis, in this au, I needed you to be a meat shield) and since then, Minato’s done everything to stay under the radar. For what reason? Who knows? He’s never told anyone his motive, and he pretends not to know or care when others ask him about it. Like he’s blacked out the events of years ago? He gave up on his own agency and left to work for the Kirijos, a much smaller and less known agency in an obscure part of the city. He signs all his official documents with an alias “Sakuya Shiome” so that no one can trace orders/cases back to him. For all the public knows, Minato Arisato no longer exists, and Sakuya Shiome is a separate entity entirely that has no ties to him what so ever. You hear the name “Sakuya” and all you think is “some random guy working an office job... or something”.
That doesn’t mean people don’t know he’s alive though. People who Minato trusts know his identity. No one in the Kirijo Agency calls him “Sakuya”, and no one in public would ever assume his name was “Sakuya” since he was involved in a major tragedy that aired nationally. Mitsuru assumes Minato is trying to catch the people responsible (and she keeps asking him about it specifically to keep him from doing so...) but really... he’s just trying to live a normal life after Aegis took a hit for him. He figures, if he goes after the people responsible, all Aegis’s work will come undone, because the people they were dealing with WILL kill them on the spot if they find them. Then what? Aegis would have died for nothing so he could get away.
So, Minato’s living peacefully in secrecy not to poke a sleeping bear (bc who knows, the people he tried to expose years ago in that tragedy might still be after him). Now, enter Akira.
Akira’s police station works closely with detectives and scientists when it comes to examining evidence and gathering intel, so he knows at first glance who Minato is.
I have to mention that Akira was so not ok with this job lmfao he was a pouty grumpy bitch because “I’m better than this I DESERVE BETTER THAN THIS I DID NOTHING WRONG...” but then Minato enters like “So, you’re the new assistant... eh, you’ll do.” and Akira is wide eyed bc this guy is??? His senpai? He gets doki over him... but it all fades pretty quickly when the “legendary detective” only wants him to do paperwork.
It’s been like... Two whole weeks and Akira hasn’t stepped foot outside Minato’s office space? Whenever he asks Minato about going out and investigating, Minato turns him down and says he was ordered to help, not to whine. Minato was talked about as someone who wasn’t afraid to take risks, but most times when Akira arrives to work in the morning, he finds Minato passed out on his workdesk, probably hasn’t even left the office to go home? Stayed in there all this time? Akira’s admiration fades rather quickly, thinking, “This isn’t the person I came to admire, right?” and he calls Minato out.
Akira’s already upset he isn’t allowed to go out and do things, and asks Minato if he isn’t ashamed to have sunk so low? To have become... lazy? A shut in? He doesn’t get a response from Minato. All Minato does is check the drawers very carefully for a case file that he hands it over to Akira. He tells him to go out and investigate on his own. Akira isn’t disappointed because this means “SUNLIGHT!!! I GET TO GO OUTSIDE!!!” but it’s so clearly a tactic Minato’s used to get Akira out of his face, so Akira calls him out on that too, and Minato doesn’t deny it at all. “Good, now leave. You have work to do.” but when Akira tries to press him to follow along, and Minato draws back with “Just get out of my face...” and that’s enough for Akira to back off... for now.
The selling point for this is that Akira’s gonna make a WHOLE LOT OF NOISE and put the agency on the map unintentionally and that’s going to result in the wrong people finding out Minato’s still alive. However, Akira being there is going to help Minato regain courage to actually go out and investigate on his own again, which he hasn’t done since the tragedy. He’ll learn to use Akira as his messenger and as his source, sending him out on missions and making Akira travel to areas he can’t reach on his own.
This is a detail they only find out later, but during the tragedy where Aegis dies, Minato ends up breaking his leg. Since the team that killed Aegis are still onto him, he has to check out of the hospital almost immediately after surgery and turn down therapy for the sake of survival. So, the group that actually helps him recover some mobility is the Kirijo group (perhaps the only people Minato would trust with his life when it came to that sort of thing). So, Minato can move, he can walk, but he can’t run for long periods of time.
He never really bothered to recover more than necessary, because he was sure he wouldn’t be able to ever step outside again, so he only regained enough mobility to walk back and forth between his apartment and his office space (which are all pretty close, and even then, he sleeps in his office when he doesn’t have the energy to walk back home).
There are a few more notes I think, but this will suffice for now. Detective AUS... I love detective AUS...

Note
Lena got into an accident and lost her memory. She becomes cold and callous. Kara watches from afar but says a phrase Lena used to Always say once in a while. Later Lena remembers everything and says the phrase to her on her own?
There’s something about the way Lena’s bruised and bleary eyes slide off of her that sends a jolt of alarm down Kara’s spine.
Lena searches the faces surrounding her hospital bed, but none of them is the one she’s looking for.
“My brother, Lex… why isn’t he here?” She asks the doctor whose speech she interrupts. “Was he in the car with me? Is he okay?”
Kara and Alex lock eyes, as Kara’s stomach drops to her knees and Lena’s tone sharpens.
“Where is my brother?!”
The doctor explains that amnesia isn’t an uncommon side effect of a brain injury like Lena’s. Through a series of carefully crafted questions, they learn that Lena’s lost almost five years. She’s lost L-Corp and Kara and Supergirl and her brother’s conviction and her mother’s arrest and her mother’s escape from prison.
When Lena closes her ears to the doctor, Kara volunteers to explain why Lex hasn’t visited. It’s the worst decision she’s ever made.
“Get out.”
There’s no denial, no outrage. Just the complete and utter rejection of her presence. From that point onwards, Lena doesn’t look at her, doesn’t say a single word. Kara finally does leave, accepting she won’t make any further progress that night.
She’ll try again in the morning.
She finds out the next morning that she learns Lena has rejected any and all visitors.
“Except for a Mr., ah….” the doctor pauses, flipping through his notes, “Jack Spheer? If you have a way to contact him, please let us know. The number she was able to provide is out of service.”
Kara shuts her eyes. “Jack Spheer died two years ago.”
The doctor sighs. “This woman just can’t catch a break.” He closes his file. “I’m sorry. Until Miss Luthor changes her mind, my hands are tied. And due to HIPAA policy, I won’t be able to share anything further about her condition.”
“But– I’m her next of kin! And her emergency contact!”
The doctor shakes his head. “Not anymore. Her family lawyers have already communicated her change in permissions.”
Kara freezes. “She– she can’t do that!”
“She can. She’s fully cognizant, and capable of giving and rescinding consent. There’s nothing the hospital can do until notified otherwise.”
“Please, just let me see her, I have to talk to her–!”
“I’m sorry.”
The doctor leaves. Kara stays for days, stubbornly hoping her persistence would levy a response from somebody. All she earns are a few sympathetic glances, and nothing more.
Kara honors the letter of Lena’s new rules, but not the spirit. As Supergirl, she hovers high above the hospital, hearing focused entirely on a single room below.
“Good morning, Miss Luthor,” as nurse greets, following the same script as all the others come before. “How are we feeling?”
“Fine. When can I leave?”
“The doctor wants to keep you a few more nights. Head traumas are tricky things. Though, if you had someone who could stay with you, he might agree to let you go sooner.”
Lena snorts. “And what part of the past week suggests to you that I have anyone?”
“Well, what about Kara? I’m sure she’d love to spend a few nights with you.”
Kara could kiss that nurse, if not for the blow that quickly follows.
“Who?” Lena asks.
“Kara Danvers? I’m told she was here when you woke up.”
“Oh. Her.”
Kara will never in her life forget the sound of Lena’s voice in that moment.
Oh. Her.
“She seemed very worried about you. I’m sure her contact information is still on file: we would be happy to give her a call–”
“Jesus christ, will you just shut up? I don’t know her! Why would I want her in my house?”
The nurse leaves. So does Kara. She doesn’t listen again.
Lena returns to L-Corp almost as soon as she’s released from the hospital, and hits the ground running. By lunch, she’s agreed to a meeting with James so long as he comes to her. Kara insists on going with him, and does so under the guise of being an extra pair of hands lugging a stack of board meeting minutes and profit projections and Rao knows what else James deemed necessary.
She practically leads the way to L-Corp, only dropping back when they reach Jess’ desk. The assistant gives them an uneasy glance– Lena’s condition doesn’t sit well with anyone, it would seem.
James is the first to step into Lena’s office. Lena greets him before even bothering to glance up at him.
“Mr. Olsen.”
“Hi, Lena,” he returns, undeterred by the curtness of her tone. “Thanks for agreeing to meet with me. I just wanted to stop in and see if you had any questions about CatCo. I know it’s been a weird couple of weeks so I brought minutes and annual reports–”
“I already know everything I need to– that for some inconceivable reason, I’ve purchased a useless company that I neither want nor need. So you and your assist– oh.”
There it is again. Oh.
Kara fidgets behind James, adjusting her glasses and shifting the stack of papers in her arms.
“Kara Danvers is one of our best up and coming reporters,” James covers quickly. “But she’s just here for the heavy lifting today.”
Lena’s lips curl in a mirthless smile. “Reporter. Funny. You told the hospital something different, Miss Danvers.”
“I–” Kara takes a breath to explain, but barely manages to edge a word in before Lena’s hand snaps up, dismissing her entirely.
“Don’t bother. I’m just glad I made the right choice. As for you, Mr. Olsen, rest assured that I have no interest in a media conglomerate. It’s my understanding you were running CatCo in Miss Grants absence, and you’re welcome to do so again until I find a way to cut the company loose.”
Lena leans back in her seat, eyebrow lifting when neither of them make a move to leave.
“That’s all.”
“Just give it time,” Alex tells her over ice cream later that week. “The doctor said there’s still a chance of her memory returning.”
Kara shakes head. “He said with familiarity. If I’m there helping remind her. Which I’m not. She won’t even let me get close.”
“If you let her find her own normal, maybe she’ll be in a better position to talk. There’s no reason to lose hope this early.”
Sure. Whatever Alex says.
After three weeks, there’s no change. Lena doesn’t reach out, to any of them. Kara doesn’t know if Lena reaches that new normal Alex described. The only new normal she knows is the constant ache of missing Lena, and the chill of her empty apartment.
She uses Supergirl as a distraction. Only problem is, the city is sleepy with wintertime, and when Thanksgiving rolls around, there’s nothing that requires Supergirl’s attention.
Nothing but a lone figure on the L-Corp balcony, gazing forlorn across the city.
Kara should just go home. Eliza’s in town, and even though a party doesn’t feel right without Lena, there are some family traditions she just can’t ignore. Even so, Kara finds herself drifting closer, and then hovering just off the far end of Lena’s balcony.
“Miss Luthor.”
Lena’s head snaps towards her. Kara tries not to notice the instinctive recoil of Lena drawing back, eyes wide and wary at the sight of her.
“What do you want?”
Despite her racing heartbeat, Lena’s voice is strong and biting. Kara offers a smile. “I heard about what happened. I’m sorry.”
Bracing herself for the inevitable snap back, Kara’s left reeling when Lena looks away, shoulders hunching in a rare moment of vulnerability.
“So you’ve finally come by to see what Lex Luthor’s sister is up to?”
“No. Not at all.” Kara doesn’t move any closer, and Lena slowly relaxes. Amazed that Lena hasn’t already banished her, Kara rests her arms against the outer edge of the railing, the reflection of Lena’s own lean that she resumes as her alarm abates.
They stand– and float, respectively– in the quiet evening for several minutes.
“They won’t let me see him,” Lena confesses softly to the shadows. “I’ve requested visitation three times since I woke up, and every time I’ve been denied.”
Kara doesn’t respond. She’s well aware of Lena’s struggles. One of the perks of being Supergirl is that when she requests Lex Luthor receive no visitors whatsoever, he receives no visitors. It might be overreach, but she’ll feel guilty later, once she’s certain Lena’s emotional walls are fully fortified. Lex Luthor won’t be getting the chance to sink a single claw in his sister.
“I can only imagine what you must think of that. Baby sister trying to takes notes…” Lena’s voice turns bitter, then trails to nothing. "But I just– I need to ask him… why.”
Kara doesn’t pretend to have an answer. She simply stays, until Lena finally turns and goes back into her office without another word. Even then, she lingers, rising to hover above L-Corp and listen as Lena sips at a bottle of wine before falling asleep on her office couch.
When she finally returns home, she sobs in her sister’s arms. For herself, and the loneliness of Thanksgiving without Lena. She cries for Lena too, and the loss of Lex made new again.
The next morning, she reaches for her phone, fingers itching to text Lena. She does so, against every instinct warning her against it. It doesn’t matter.
Her number is no longer in service.
Two weeks before Christmas, Kara is run so ragged she almost forgets to miss Lena. Almost.
But on this morning in particular, she’s trying plot a course through six scheduled interviews plus her looming deadline for a separate article when she waits to pick up her coffee order. She hates impatience, but this time she’s that person tapping their foot and checking their watch repeatedly.
“Gingerbread latte for Kiera!”
Kara lunges for the counter and snatches the cup away before it makes contact with the ledge.
“Thank you!” She chirps before stuffing an extra couple of bills in the tip jar. She makes a mess at the condiment bar before hastily jamming a lid on and pushing towards the door.
She smacks into a body entering. Her lid flies off, latte sloshing up and over her hand and drenching the blouse of her unwitting victim, who gasps first in surprise then cursing in pain as the hot liquid soaks through her shirt.
“Ow, fuck!” A familiar voice sears Kara’s consciousness. “Watch where you’re going!”
Kara blinks at Lena, cheeks heating when recognition doesn’t hit Lena for another three heartbeats. When it does, it comes with its own curse.
“Of fucking course. Are you following me now?”
“Nnn-no?” Kara responds, hesitantly. “I was here first, technically? So, no. Definitely no.”
“Whatever,” Lena mutters, plucking at her shirt. “Did you manage to grab any napkins before jumping to lightspeed?”
“Oh!” Kara starts pulling her horde of napkins from her pockets. “God, I’m so sorry. Yes, here!”
She gives Lena one handful before using the other to start cleaning up the mess, starting with the floor before wiping the tops of Lena’s shoes dry. She very nearly moves on to the splotches of damp hose, but catches herself just as Lena curses again.
“God damn it,” she huffs, slopping the soiled napkins into the trash. Her shirt is hopelessly ruined, and they both know it.
“I really am sorry,” Kara says again. “Is there anything I could do–?”
“Staying the fuck away from me would have been a start, but apparently you’re physically incapable,” Lena snaps. “So unless you have a magical stain remover in that messenger bag, no, there’s nothing that will salvage the meeting I’ve been prepping for the past two weeks. So. Thanks for that.”
Kara knows the importance of keeping appointments for L-Corp. Sometimes, she’s learned, investors only give you one chance.
She eyes the stain on Lena’s blouse, then starts pulling off her bag. “Wait a second!"
She strips off her blazer, and holds it out to Lena. The fit will be off, but it should hide the damage just enough to get Lena through her meeting.
"It’s not a remover, but does a magic stain HIDER count?”
Kara weathers Lena’s skeptical glare. Weighing her options, Lena must land on the side of not having any, and a moment later the proffered jacket is plucked from her fingers.
It fits well enough once Lena cuffs the sleeves. The result is some exposed lining, which actually looks deliberate with its pretty spotted satin. Most importantly, it hides the stain entirely.
“Perfect. You look great.”
Lena’s cheeks flush, but this time Kara isn’t certain it’s from anger. “It’s passable.” She meets Kara’s gaze. “Thank you.”
“Oh, please,” Kara waves off. “That’s what friends are for!”
Lena blinks, then jolts as the words register. Before Kara can frantically backtrack to salvage what little conversation they were having, her phone starts to ring. James’ name is on the caller ID.
“Oh shoot! I’m so sorry, I have to go, I am so late.” Kara shoves the rest of her napkins into Lena’s hands. “Just send me your dry cleaning bill, okay? Sorry, again!”
She escapes into bustle of foot traffic, and lets the day sweep her away.
Two days later, she returns to CatCo to find James bustling towards her.
“Where have you been?” He asks. “I tried calling you–”
“I was talking to a source, and then I was coming here anyway, so…” she blinks at James’ agitation. “What’s wrong?”
“Lena was here.”
“What?”
“She was looking for you. I tried to call you…”
Kara presses her hand to her head. Lena, here. Looking for her. And Kara missed it.
“She left something at your desk.”
Nearly tripping in her haste, Kara scurries to her desk. There in a neat cardboard garment box is her blazer, crisply pressed and devoid of any coffee transfer.
She doesn’t find a note.
She’s Supergirl again when she next sees Lena. It’s on the L-Corp balcony again, and this time Lena somehow looks even more troubled than she did at Thanksgiving.
“Good evening, Miss Luthor.”
Green eyes blink up at her, too despondent to be surprised. “Supergirl. Did you need something?”
“No. Nothing, just– you seemed troubled, and I wanted see if you were okay.”
“My family is either dead or in prison, and I haven’t left my office in over a week. I’m just peachy.”
Instead of getting discouraged, Kara offers a sympathetic smile as she sits on the edge of the balcony rail. Her feet dangle, perilous for anyone who isn’t her.
“It must be really lonely, to wake up the way you did. I’m sorry you had to go through that.”
“Why are you speaking with me?” Lena asks. “You should hate me.”
She regards Kara carefully. “Let me guess. You were my friend too.”
Kara grins. “Yes, I was. And I hope I still can be.” Lena looks away, and Kara tries to ignore the way her heart drops. “Maybe I should have mentioned it sooner. But I didn’t want you to feel pressured to resume a life you don’t remember.”
For several long moments, neither of them say anything. Winter doesn’t get cold in National City, not like it does in Metropolis, but there’s still a significant chill, this high up and this late at night. Kara knows from the way Lena tugs her sweater closer around her that the chill is present tonight, even if she herself can’t feel it.
“Do you know Kara Danvers?” Lena asks quietly.
Kara straightens, surprised by the question. Lena correctly assumes her response regardless.
“Of course you do,” she drawls with a roll of her eyes. “Everyone in the city seems to know Kara Danvers.”
A nervous chuckle scrapes out of Kara’s throat. “Yeah, as a reporter, she really gets around.”
“She said something the other day… I haven’t been able to get it out of my head.”
“What’s that?”
“She lent me her jacket, and when I tried to thank her, she said ‘that’s what friends are for’.” Lena shakes her head. “It’s a normal thing to say, but… I just keep hearing it over and over in my head. Always in her voice.”
Kara swallows. “Lena, I’m sorry, but I don’t think I should be the one you talk to about this.”
“Oh.” Lena’s gaze shutters. “Of course. I don’t mean to take you away from your duties.”
“No, it’s not that, it’s just… I’m not…”
It’s just that she’s not impartial.
Kara can’t be the sounding board to Lena’s confusion, when all she wants is to take her in her arms and bring Lena home where she belongs.
Kara sighs. “I’m Kara Danvers.”
Lena freezes. “Excuse me?”
“I’m Kara Danvers. Superhero by night, intrepid reporter by day.”
Whatever Lena expected, it isn’t this. The revelation throws her for a loop, and she pulls away from both Kara and the balcony rail, arms folding tight in front of her. With a knot in her stomach, Kara floats up off the rail, and descends to land on the balcony facing her.
“Why would you tell me that?” Lena demands. Her eyes are hard, yet uncertain. “And why would I believe it?”
Kara fishes for a way to prove it’s not a lie, and finds herself at a loss. She doesn’t have her glasses, or even an elastic for her hair, and Lena hasn’t spent enough time with Kara Danvers to have any kind of special knowledge.
She laughs at the unexpected absurdity of it.
“It’s a lot easier to prove this when I can just pop my buttons open and show off the suit. I’ve never done it this way before…” She shrugs.
“I can tell you that it was a gingerbread latte I spilled on you at Noonan’s the other day, and that the blazer I loaned you had little blue polka dots on the lining. And I can tell you I’ve been kicking myself ever since I found out you came to CatCo looking for me and I wasn’t there to meet you.”
Lena’s eyes glisten in the light filtering through the windows of her office. Her throat works silently for long moments until she trusts her voice enough to speak. “How can you trust me? I may not be– you don’t know me.”
Kara shrugs. “You may not have the same memories that I do, but Lena… you didn’t become a different person when you came to National City. Supergirl didn’t make you a good person, and neither did Kara Danvers. You were already good.”
Silence stretches between them. Lena doesn’t look convinced, and clearly doesn’t trust the trust that Kara is offering. Kara sighs, rubbing the back of her neck. “Last time, I waited too long to tell you the truth. It nearly destroyed our friendship. I don’t want to make that mistake again.”
Lena looks away, finding distraction in the lights starting to turn off in the building across the street. Kara waits, letting Lena be the next to speak.
“I mean something, to people. Ever since I woke up in the hospital, and found out my brother– that Lex killed people, everyone has been acting like they know me. Like they care.”
Kara nods, but doesn’t say anything.
“I know Kara is different. She– you mean something to me, I just… I can’t remember. I’ve puzzled out what we had, but I don’t feel it. I don’t have it inside me.”
The last tiny shred of hope that Lena might one day recover her memories evaporates in that moment. Kara feels the tears spring to her eyes, but she blinks them back before Lena can see them.
She shakes her head and pastes on a smile. “That’s okay. Your memories may not come back, but that doesn’t have to matter. You have friends here, and not just me. James, and Sam, and Alex… you can make new memories, if you want. You don’t have to be alone.”
“I don’t know if I’m ready for that.”
Kara’s heart trips in her chest, and her breath locks behind her ribs.
“But I would like to know you better. If you– I know I’ve been awful to you, I’m sorry…”
“Already forgotten,” Kara promises swiftly. It’s true, but Rao she’ll say anything she has to if it means Lena will open the door again.
Lena nods, swallowing again. “Then, if you’re agreeable, maybe… maybe we could get to know each other again?”
“I would really, really like that.”
They go for coffee that night. Supergirl flies off, and meets Lena on the street as Kara Danvers. In the light of the foyer, Lena studies her, as though looking for hints of Supergirl.
“Miss Danvers,” she greets. Kara’s chest constricts painfully at the resumed formality.
She swallows. “Hi.”
“What was the question I wanted to ask my brother on Thanksgiving?”
Kara blinks, then softens into a relieved smile. “Why,” she answers. Her grin grows when Lena breaks into a tiny smile of her own. Her eyebrows lift, and her head tilts towards the door.
“Shall we?”
With that, they strike out into the dark, together.

Hired Part Three - Conflict of Interest
@erikalyafter requested the following prompt: Trained as a sexual weapon Steve hunts the world’s best detective
Chapters (1) (2) (3)
In Steve’s line of work, referrals were the key to finding clients. One couldn’t very well put out a flyer advertising mercenary-type services wherein sex (or at least the promise of sex) might be used to extort information or carry out an assassination. More importantly, however, referrals gave him a minor measure of security, in that there was a six-degrees-of-separation element to the identity of his customers. He had begun his career by working for people he knew and trusted, and they in turn recommended him to others. And because the initial sources of the recommendations were reliable, he could feel more or less at ease in taking on new jobs.
It was for that reason, along with a general bad feeling in his gut, that he was currently preoccupied with mapping out an exit strategy rather than engaging in formal pleasantries with the group of well-dressed men seated around the table.
“I’m sorry – but how did you hear of me again?” Steve asked.
The group’s apparent leader, a tall, fit man in his fifties who identified himself as Ian Markova, waved away the question. “I should think that would hardly matter, considering what we’re offering you.”
Steve begrudgingly agreed. Under most circumstances, he wouldn’t have consented to a meeting with guys like these – mafia types, by the look of it – but he could easily retire on the compensation they were proposing.
“Fair enough. What’s the job?”
Markova nodded to the younger man sitting on his right. Steve was handed a manila folder, which he opened to discover the photo and dossier of an Interpol agent.
“Daniel Williams,” Markova introduced. “Graduated with a major in Criminal Justice at Seton Hall, top of his class at the police academy, and generally acknowledged as a rising star in the law enforcement community. Over the years, he’s worked for a variety of government agencies as a top notch investigator. Two years ago, he was recruited by Interpol, where – presumably – he is still currently employed.”
“Presumably?”
“The nature of his job requires him to be constantly on the move and on guard. Much of his personal history has been expunged in order to protect anyone who might be affected by his work, and very few can confirm his current status.” Markova fixed Steve with a haughty grin, and his dark eyes shone with malicious humor. “I, of course, am one of those few.
Steve frowned and closed the file. “And what exactly would you like me to do?”
Markova folded his hands on the table. “From what little information we’ve been able to gather, Agent Williams’s propensity for switching jobs so often may have also been due to prejudice, aside from his obvious talent for solving difficult crimes. He has been openly bisexual since his college days. And you,” he gave Steve an admiring once-over, “have both the looks and the skills necessary to get close to him.”
“And you know all this – how?”
“Never you mind. The situation is this: Agent Williams has been, shall we say, interfering in my business affairs. I could have him eliminated, naturally, but I think he could prove very useful, given the right incentive. What I would like from you, is to find me some leverage. Seduce him into giving up something I can use to secure his cooperation. Complete this small task for me, and I will pay you the sum we spoke of - half up front, and the rest after you deliver.
Markova extended his hand. “Do we have a deal, Mister McGarrett?”
“McGarrett. McGarrett!”
“Hmm, what?”
Daniel Williams – Danny, as he preferred to be called – shook his head in exasperation. “I said – what do you want in your coffee?”
“Oh.” Steve glanced at the self-serving refreshment station in the hotel lobby, wondering if they had any organic butter on hand. He doubted it. “Surprise me.”
“Black it is, then.” Danny handed Steve a plain coffee in a disposable cup and sat down on the opposite end of the couch, facing him. He turned his attention to the papers he’d left laying between them, all of them written in various eastern European languages.
“So, what are we up to today?” Steve asked.
Danny shot him a half-hearted glare, and Steve fought a grin.
Over the past several weeks, Steve had arranged enough chance encounters with Williams, subtly experimenting with different personas and hitting on him, that Danny eventually gave up trying to ignore him and instead began to invite him along whenever he went out to run errands or complete other daily activities associated with life. But every so often, Danny would disappear for several days, or he’d receive a call during one of their “dates” and would instruct Steve to drive his rented Camaro to some out-of-the-way location for a covert meeting. Steve would then be forced to wait in the car while Danny spoke with someone on a disposable cell phone (a new one every time) or talk to a thin figure who consistently kept his or her back to Steve at all times.
While Danny’s clandestine operations, not to mention Markova’s frequent and increasingly impatient demands for a status update, kept him on edge, Steve had to admit that he was actually enjoying himself for the first time since – he couldn’t even remember.
Danny had this strange way about him that made him equally infuriating and endearing. He had strong opinions about everything under the sun, from what was an acceptable topping on pizza to music to the ocean, and he had no qualms about sharing them in a remarkable and highly entertaining fashion. He had a sharp tongue and an even sharper mind, quick with a joke, but just as quick with his fists (a fact Steve discovered when he’d pushed Danny too far and was rewarded with a right cross to the jaw).
But more than that, Danny was kind and compassionate. Steve witnessed it first hand when he “accidently” stumbled upon the agent in the aftermath of a raid. He had been in the crowd gathered around a police barricade, watching in horror as Williams and the local police breached an abandoned building, only to exit moments later with malnourished, dirty and obviously abused children (victims of human trafficking) in tow. He’d watched as Danny brushed the frightened tears off a little boy’s cheek, and draped his jacket around the shoulders of a nearly-naked girl.
And once the smoke had cleared and all of the kids had been taken to several area hospitals, he had tailed Williams to a gym and watched him wail on a punching bag until his knuckles bled.
“Well, for starters,” Danny answered, setting aside his files, “Maybe you’d finally like to tell me something about yourself, something other than just your name and a bullshit backstory.”
Steve put a hand to his chest. “You wound me, Danny. I’ve told you TONS of stuff about me. Why do you keep calling it bullshit?”
Though they’d achieved something resembling a real friendship, neither of them had been forthcoming with anything significant. Steve continued to repeat the cover story he’d designed to attract Danny, who in turn talked and ranted in circles while never actually revealing anything beyond superficial details.
“Because it is,” Danny said. He made himself comfortable against the cushions and laid his arm across the back of the couch. “I’ve learned a lot about you over the last few weeks, and none of it meshes with the crap you’ve been spouting.” Strangely, he almost sounded hurt.
“Yeah? Let me guess – you’re one of those cops who run background checks on all of his dates, am I right? Pray, enlighten me, officer. Did you find something to contradict everything I’ve told you so far?” Naturally, Steve assumed that Agent Williams would do his homework, but he had plenty of useful connections, including a hacker capable of revising Steve’s history to match whatever narrative he required.
Danny shook his head. “Okay; first of all – no. I did not run a background check on you, though in my line of work, that’s well within my right. And second, I am a detective – agent – whatever, and a damn good one. It’s my job to read between the lines and sort out the truth.”
“Okay, detective. You think you’re so smart?” Steve scooted closer and stared him down, his lips curved in a challenging smirk. “What have you learned about me?”
“Well, let’s see.” Danny placed the tips of his fingers to his temples, mimicking a psychic about to perform a reading. He took an over-exaggerated breath. “You either grew up in, or spent a significant amount of time in Hawaii.”
Steve’s smirk faltered.
“Swimming is your preferred method for staying in shape.”
Steve willed himself not to fidget.
“You have a dog, even though you’re more of a cat person.”
The smirk vanished altogether. “How…?”
“You’re ex-military, probably U.S. Navy; your father is no longer alive, and you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which I’m guessing you haven’t sought any sort of help in addressing.” Danny lowered his hands. “How am I doing so far?”
To say that Steve was dumbfounded would be an understatement, so much so that he didn’t bother to contradict anything. “I – how could you possibly know all that?”
Danny sighed and met his glare. “I also know that you’re incredibly thoughtful and gentle. Those who are lucky enough to call you ‘friend’ would describe you as deeply caring and loyal to a fault. And, in spite of this playboy act, you’re a hopeless romantic who desperately wants a family of his own – one that will never forsake him.”
Steve crossed his arms and scowled. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Danny inclined his head slightly and lifted a shoulder. “You can deny it all you want, but we both know I’m right.”
“You keep accusing me of being dishonest and cagey, but you haven’t exactly been forthcoming yourself.”
“Fair enough.” Danny studied him in silence for a moment. Then he nodded to himself, as though he’d made some sort of decision.
He leaned to one side and reached into his pants pocket, pulling out a glossy piece of paper folded into a square. He offered it to Steve.
“What’s this?” Steve straightened the paper.
It was a photograph of two children, a teenage girl with long, brown hair, and a young, blond-haired boy with a wide-toothy grin.
“My kids,” Danny said. “Grace and Charlie. They’re the only good thing to have come out of my failed marriage.”
“They’re beautiful,” Steve answered sincerely. He returned the picture.
Danny gazed at it, a sad smile on his place. “My ex got custody of them in the divorce. Then she got remarried to this real estate developer who’s been constantly moving them around the United States. The only way I could keep up was to study and work my ass off to become a good investigator so that I could qualify for a job with the FBI, and later Interpol, which gave me the freedom to relocate with them.”
He carefully placed the photo back in his pocket. “What sucks is that my current case poses a significant risk. I can only video chat with them over secured lines at random intervals. I haven’t gotten to hold them in over six months. And even before this whole debacle, my ex-wife has been fighting tooth and nail to bar me from visitation. She thinks that if she distances them from me, it’ll hurt them less in the long run if I get killed in the line of duty.”
“That’s – I don’t even know what to say. Sorry, I guess.”
Danny smiled a little in thanks. “That’s why this will be my last case. Once I wrap this up, I’m going to quit and find some place stable where I can put down roots. I’ll retire from law enforcement; maybe open a restaurant or something. And once I’m settled, I’m going to sue for shared custody.”
Steve could hardly believe what he was hearing. On the one hand, he’d just been handed the exact type of leverage he’d been paid to uncover. Clearly, Danny would do absolutely anything for his children; probably even cooperate with some less-than-savory characters to keep them safe. All Steve had to do was excuse himself, call Markova, tell him about Grace and Charlie, and he could sail off into the sunset with a full bank account.
On the other hand, Steve wasn’t the type of guy to put kids in danger under any circumstance. More importantly, how could Steve betray Danny after such a massive display of trust? If he was being perfectly honest with himself, he had grown to like Danny very much. In spite of the lies, they had real chemistry, if not enough for a relationship, then at least they might form a good friendship.
Then again, that point was moot. One way or another, Danny would learn the truth about Steve. And when he did…
One of Danny’s phones rang, disturbing Steve’s introspection and Danny’s quiet observation.
“Yes? Okay. I’m on my way.” Danny hung up and gathered his files. “I need to go. Duty calls.”
Steve stood up. “And I suppose I’m not allowed to come along?”
“Sorry babe.” Danny got to his feet and took a few steps closer to Steve. “You busy on Friday?”
He mulled it over. “I’m not sure yet. I have some – uh – stuff to take care of.”
“Okay. Well, I’ll check in with you later.” Danny hesitated. Then he leaned up and gave Steve a peck on the lips.
Steve blinked. “What was that for?”
Danny grinned. “Meh. Just felt like it.” He left without another world.
Steve raised a hand to touch his lips. It was a hardly a real kiss, certainly nothing to blush about, and yet Steve could feel his neck growing warm.
Oh god; he was so screwed.

Preparing for the Inevitable (Steven and Wallace)
Closed Thread between: Steven @sterlingsilverchampion Wallace @sootopolitangrace
Steven:
Rushing down the hallway, after sending another trainer home packing with their pokemon defeated, Steven snapped his finger and waited as Klefki, Alloy, caught up to him with one of his master room keys to Ever Grande's meeting room areas. Private, of course, due to the fact that what he wanted to discuss with Wallace was of mere importance.
The league's future.
When Wallace arrived on the scene, Steven waited a moment before placing one of Ever Grande's past records onto the table in between them. "Hello, Wallace." He greeted, although there seemed to be something else in that tone besides the outwardly friendliness he usually had. "I hope your challenges today have been successful. Anyway, that's not why I summoned you here. Do you recall this?"
On the table the folder was opened to a document form. It was a record from when Steven and Wallace had fought before in Ever Grande's open conference. The date wasn't THAT long ago.
Wallace:
The trip to Ever Grande was never too difficult of a trip for Wallace, given how close it was to Sootopolis. It wasn't uncommon for him to visit for anything they might need or to personally deliver any kind of paper work might remain. This time, however, Wallace was called to a meeting with the champion himself. This didn't really bug him too much, since Steven was a good person and someone he considered a friend, though he would have to focus on business for now.
Never one to show up late, it was only a a couple minutes of waiting before Wallace would arrive in the meeting room. He moved into the room quickly, looking to the file with a curious glance. "Greetings, Steven." He responded as he took his seat across form the Champion, noticing something was off. What it was, he couldn't tell, but there was... Something not right about this. He pushed that to the back of his mind as Steven spoke up once more.
Wallace slide the folder closer, gazing over the report. The previous Ever Grande Open Conference... Particularly his match with Steven? It was hard to forget matches with Steven, given how close and intense they were. That battle in particular, he had managed to force Steven to his last pokemon before Milotic was defeated. It was a good match, no doubt, but didn't seem too important in his eyes. He had learned from it, but dwelling on defeat wasn't good for the mind.
"I do." He says, the calm in his voice hiding the curiosity roaming free in his mind. He would let Steven speak, remaining quiet while he looked over the document for any signs of strange details.
Steven:
So he did remember it. Good, this would make his job all the much easier as he went ahead and and continued on with the look of relief in his eyes. Something that important was hard to not forget, especially if it had caused both of them to draw out the battle until the very last pokemon. Their signatures, of all pokemon, too.
"There's been something i've been wanting to bring up with you ever since that battle. As you know, the league system works like a power house. Those who are deemed worthy are recommended and tested to see how strong they are before prospering to become the league's next thriving Champion."
Bitter were his words, however. It felt like Steven was offering something as precious as any sort of gold that he could let go of, for his best friend to take. He needed to do this. He WANTED Wallace to say yes to this proposal. Despite the fact that he didn't want to give it up...
"Wallace... from one friend to another, I want to ask you something utterly important." The silver champion looks at the water-type user, but now with a mix of hesitation in his eyes.
"I... want you to consider taking the champion title from me. Not just the rank, the whole region's title of Champion. If there is one person I would rather take it from me, one who is strong enough to push me up to that point," He pauses for a moment. "...is you. You're my best friend, after all, and despite all that we've been through in Hoenn, I know that you're more than capable of managing yourself to have it as well as continue with your contest entries."
Wallace:
Of all the things Wallace expected out of this conversation, it was not this. His mouth opened as if to say something, yet no sound escaped his mouth. It was quickly closed once more as he shifted to sit up and look at Steven once more. This couldn't an easy thing for Steven to request. Wallace knew his friend held the title close to his heart, and that giving something like this up... It was not something Steven would do without thinking.
However, he also knew there were issues with this that would need to be discussed, and that this was not something to confirm immediately. He had time to think things over, to work on everything...
"I will consider it, Steven." Wallace says in the all too familiar tone of his. The careful volume and gentle touch to his words that seemed to convey everything was alright. "However, I will only take the role if I can truly best you. Any other way would not be a fitting way to take such a title from you." He smiles after this, watching the champion.
If he was honest, he was worried about Steven. What had come about that would make him consider this? What would Steven do after this? He didn't think that Steven would simply choose to go work at Devon full time, given how he talked of the stress it brought before. He couldn't bring himself to ask directly, but he wouldn't let himself remain silent on the issue. If Steven was having a problem, surely Wallace should try to help...
Steven:
"I assume you have plans for if I am able to take the title, yes? Your stability is important here, Steven, and as your friend I would not take this from you without you being secure afterwards." His concern shows in his tone, but he does not voice the storm of other worries that dot his mind. There would be a time and a place to discuss those things, but this was business.
The consideration was taken up by Wallace, which is what Steven was expecting form him. He wasn't doubtful that his friend wouldn't take it, Steven was a confident man. He knew that the water-type specialist would. To him, Wallace was best suited for the position if he truthfully had to pick out anyone within the league to withhold the Champion's position.
"Of course. I wouldn't expect for you to take it so willingly. That's why I wanted to tell you now, so that way we may work on preparing for that battle." If the last one they had was that intense, he couldn't fathom the intensity with battling to their fullest extent. Their pokemon, both teams, would have to be prepared properly in order to ready themselves for an intense battle.
Steven wasn't going to go easy on his friend either. If they both battle, they both will not let up or slacken. This was going to be a long, drawn-out battle, he could feel it.
Then again, this decision was made on so suddenly. Which Steven was fine with. He had to be fine with it.
"This is important, Wallace. It matters not what the outcome brings when it happens. In the end, it's fate, and I want you to make sure that you and your pokemon are willing to give it your best shot and give my team your everything." Brushing off the concern, Steven glances at his friend. There was no more hesitance in his eyes, even though if the emotion in them was somewhat unreadable.
"The only way I will deny it to you is if you feel like you can't do it. That is not the case, however, is it Wallace? Do you believe in yourself and have the will to take it from me when our battle takes place?"
Wallace:
He couldn't tell what his friend was feeling, and, to an extent, that worried him. He prided himself on being able to read those close to him. He would simply have to trust Steven would let him know if there was something wrong...
The look of concern from the Water Specialist softened, before returning to a the standard small smile of his. This was not the time to worry about that stuff. He had something to plan for. For now, he should focus on his preparations. Steven would not spare any of his strength, and it would take everything Wallace had to overcome him.
It seemed Steven matched that resolve.
"No, that isn't the case." He looks back to Steven, much more confident judging from his change in posture. "We will give you the show of a lifetime, Steven. I hope you will be ready for us."
"Is there anything else you wish to discuss, Steven?" He asked after a moment, waiting to see if there is any more that needed to be planned out for the week.
Steven:
Is there anything else you wish to discuss, Steven?
The silver Champion merely glances at Wallace, his body motionless and eyes diverting back to the window where the great oceans rise and rolled against one another in a locking battle.
It hurt not to tell Wallace about how he felt. The way he had presented this meeting was meant to give him some sort of closure, but instead he felt a sense of dread. An attachment.
I can't let go... I don't want to, but I can't hold on any longer. The image of his father flashed through his mind, the company soon to follow.
To be so far away from everyone, in a sense, left him with an empty feeling inside. Deep inside he knew that the end result will add tension to their friendship. It's something he can't avoid, just like everything else that fell on him.
I don't want to lose a friend... Or my friends, or my passion, or... Everything. This is the only way though... For Hoenn.
"No, that is all. Our battle schedule will be lined up in a month from now. I'll remind you here and there but be sure to surprise me, Wallace. It will be a battle we will never forget."

1. Arthur and Barry are back together again. Let me rephrase that. Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller, who co-starred as Aquaman/Arthur Curry and Flash/Barry Allen in Warner Bros. Justice League, reunited over the weekend for a solid cause — Momoa’s ongoing protests in Hawaii over a major construction project atop a mountain (Mauna Kea) that’s considered the most sacred site on earth by Indigenous Hawaiians.
The Game of Thrones star says that his continued efforts (alongside thousands of activists) prevent him from shooting Aquaman 2. That sequel isn’t due to start production until 2020, so Momoa might be exaggerating, but he’s definitely pulled out of a Wizard World appearance. Now, he’s receiving support from Miller, who attended the mounting demonstrations. Momoa aims to help halt the construction of the the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), a reported $1.4 billion project.
2. Danny Masterson, the Church of Scientology and leader David Miscavige are being sued by four women who have accused Masterson of sexual assault.
The four accusers — including Masterson’s ex-girlfriends Chrissie Carnell Bixler and Marie Bobette Riales — claim they were victims of a harassment campaign that began after they came forward in 2017 with allegations against the former “That ’70s Show” actor, who is a member of the controversial church, according to court documents obtained by The Blast.
“When those women came forward to report Masterson’s crimes, the Defendants conspired to and systematically stalked, harassed, invaded their and their family’s privacy, and intentionally caused them emotional distress to silence and intimidate them,” the women’s attorneys allege in the lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday.
Masterson, through his attorney, denied the claims and said he has been “railroaded” by his ex-girlfriend, though he didn’t specify which one.
“This is beyond ridiculous. I’m not going to fight my ex-girlfriend in the media like she’s been baiting me to do for more than two years,” he said in the statement. “I will beat her in court — and look forward to it because the public will finally be able [to] learn the truth and see how I’ve been railroaded by this woman. And once her lawsuit is thrown out, I intend to sue her and the others who jumped on the bandwagon for the damage they caused me and my family.”
The four women — joined by Bixler’s husband, Cedric Bixler-Zavala — are suing for stalking, invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress. They are seeking unspecified damages and are demanding a trial by jury.
An attorney for the Church of Scientology called the lawsuit a “hallucinatory publicity stunt.”
“From everything we have read in the press, this baseless lawsuit will go nowhere because the claims are ludicrous and a sham,” Bill Forman said in a statement to Page Six. “It’s a dishonest and hallucinatory publicity stunt.”
3. Bernie Sanders rolled out a video with his first celebrity endorser of his 2020 presidential campaign, Cardi B, after meeting the rapper in Detroit.
They taped an interview at The TEN Nail bar while he was in town for a debate.
Singer interviews Sanders about police brutality, racism, health care and education in the 11-minute tutorial on the presidential candidate's campaign.
She concludes the video with a pitch to her millions of social media followers: 'Let's just get more educated.'
'Please let's put our focus on this term's elections, because I don't think people realize how serious it is,' she says.
4. Laverne Cox, 35, became one of many voices calling for IMDb to change its policy.
The movie database shared transgender stars' birth names in their bios.
Laverne said the database was 'deadnaming' transgender stars by sharing names people hoped to bury from their past.
Calls for IMDb to alter its policy first started in April 2019.
The company has since updated the policy to allow the removal of birth names from each person's biographies if they request it.
5. Wisconsin fugitive Jeremiah Button disappeared in 2016, weeks before his trial.
Hunter Thomas Nelson found a bunker with a log door carved into an embankment 'months ago' in the township of Ringle west of Wausau.
Nelson became curious and returned to the bunker on Friday morning.
There he discovered Button, 44, before he moved away and called police.
A 20-minute stand-off ensued before Button surrendered.
Police said Button set up solar panels to power LED lights, radios and fans.

Police chief who claimed Madeleine McCann is dead in new documentary
A top British police officer says the mystery of Maddie McCann will be solved in his lifetime in claims made during a new bombshell Netflix documentary, due to be released this week.
Jim Gamble, the senior child protection officer in UK’s first investigation into the youngster’s dissapearance, says: ‘I absolutely believe that in my lifetime we will find out what has happened to Madeleine McCann’, the Sun reported.
‘There’s huge hope to be had with the advances in technology. Year on year DNA is getting better. Year on year other techniques, including facial recognition, are getting better.
‘And as we use that technology to revisit and review that which we captured in the past, there’s every likelihood that something we already know will slip into position.’
This is while other experts suggest that the youngster is likely to have been ‘kept alive’ by traffickers due to her financial value as a ‘middle-class British girl’.
Jim Gamble (right) has said that it could be possible that Maddie (left) could be found in his life time due to advances in technology
Maddie’s parents (pictured above) had received numerous requests from producers Pulse Films over the past 18 months
Private investigator Julian Peribanez, who was hired by the McCann family suggests that traffickers ‘usually go for lower-class kids from third world countries’.
He said: ‘That’s the main supplier of these gangs.
‘The value that Madeleine had was really high because if they took her it’s because they were going to get a lot of money.’
The documentary also hears from the former Portuguese police chief, who claimed Madeleine McCann is dead and that her parents faked her kidnap in one of the key interviewees of the new Netflix movie about the missing girl.
The streaming giant is due to trail the show tomorrow morning with the first programme in the series – already predicted to be a huge global hit – going live on Friday.
Kate and Gerry McCann (pictured above) have said they want ‘nothing to do with’ the new Netflix show
Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry had hit out at Netflix last week saying the documentary could hamper the search for their daughter.
The company was locked in crisis talks and even considered shelving it but has decided ‘the show must go on.’
The McCanns, who refused to take part in the project and declined to watch a preview, will be infuriated that their tormentor Goncalo Amaral – ‘a thorn in our sides’ – is set to be starring in it.
The couple, who are still challenging a libel win by the ex Portuguese detective in the highest court in the land, will be ‘horrified to learn’ that the worldwide streaming service has interviewed the retired officer. He accused them of covering up their daughter’s accidental death in a holiday apartment nearly 12 years ago.
A pal of the McCann’s said last night: ‘Kate and Gerry will be mortified and horrified to learn that one of the lead roles has gone to Mr Amaral who has caused them so much extra hurt and pain over the years. He has been a thorn in their sides since the very beginning.’
Oscar-winning Netflix has simply named the show ‘The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann’ and is is boasting it has ‘riveting’ new interviews with key investigators as the 12th anniversary of the world’s most famous missing child cases approaches in May.
Goncalo Amaral (pictured above) has previously stated that Kate and Gerry McCann had faked Madeline’s kidnapping
MailOnline first exclusively revealed that Kate and Gerry wanted ‘nothing to do with’ the drama which has cost up to a reported £20 million.
Heart doctor Gerry, 50, and former GP Kate, 51, from Rothley, Leicestershire, said in a joint statement released by spokesperson Clarence Mitchell a week ago. ‘The production company told us that they were making the documentary and asked us to participate. We did not see and still do not see how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, could potentially hinder it.
Kate and Gerry McCann are vowing to sue retired police chief Goncalo Amaral
The parents of Madeleine McCann are vowing to sue retired police chief Goncalo Amaral if he happens to libel them during his key role in the movie.
A source close to Kate and Gerry told MailOnline tonight: ‘Their lawyers will be watching with interest and are warning ‘Beware!’
‘Mr Amaral is the one who has continued to make false and malicious accusations against Madeleine’s parents which has resulted in a long running libel battle. Whilst he won on a counter appeal Kate and Gerry are challenging the Portuguese Supreme Court judgement.
‘Kate and Gerry wanted absolutely nothing to do with the Netflix programme but they now understand Mr Amaral is playing a part in it and they want to ensure he says nothing again to incriminate them.’
The couple are asking their lawyers top London based libel experts Carter Ruck to look into it.
Meanwhile they are awaiting a decision by the European Court of Human Rights to say if they have a case to answer against Mr Amaral and the Portuguese court in their ongoing battle.
An ECHR spokesperson said today: ‘The case is currently under consideration and there is no fixed time frame for examining it.’
‘Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the programme. We will not be making any further statements or giving interviews regarding this programme.’
They spoke out after the Home Office confirmed it was considering a new request for extra funding from Scotland Yard to continue the hunt for Maddie – giving them hope there is ‘still work left to be done.’
couple from Rothley, Leics, added: ‘Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the programme. We will not be making any further statements or giving interviews regarding this programme.’
Three-year-old Maddie vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007 while her parents were dining with pals in a nearby tapas restaurant. She had been left sleeping alone with her younger twin siblings Sean and Amelie with regular half hourly checks being made on the children. Her parents cling onto a glimmer of hope their eldest child could still be found alive. She would now be aged 15, nearly 16.
The McCanns, their family, official spokesperson, ‘Tapas Seven’ holiday pals, British police and UK private investigators have also snubbed the venture.
Maddie’s parents had received numerous requests from producers Pulse Films over the past 18 months.
A source close to the movie makers, which scooped three awards at last month’s Oscars for Roma, which follows the life of a live-in housekeeper of a middle-class family in Mexico City – said: ‘Everyone everywhere is fascinated by the Maddie story. We would have welcomed the opportunity of working with the McCanns directly but they informed us they couldn’t and wouldn’t consider taking part while a police investigation is into their daughter’s abduction is ongoing.
‘But we have interesting new interviews with people close to the inquiry and we believe we can give justice to this unbelievably tragic story.’
An insider at Pulse Films said: ‘Netflix are hoping it will be a massive hit.’
Retired Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral is among the key interviewees. In his best seller book ‘The Truth of the Lie’he accuses Maddie’s parents – who were once suspects in their daughter’s disappearance – of faking her kidnap after she accidentally died in the holiday flat.
Kate and Gerry sued him in April 2009 for libel and their fight has ended up in the European Court of Human Rights.
Kate in her 2011 heart wrenching best seller book ‘Madeleine’ writes about Mr Amaral : ‘That man has caused us so much upset and anger because of how he has treated my beautiful Madeleine and the search to find her. Here was a person who had been entrusted with finding our little girl and who failed her.’
The search for Maddie – who was just nine days away from her fourth birthday – has became the most high-profile missing person investigation in history. The youngster’s face in iconic pictures is recognisable around the world.
Netflix has had a string of successful true crime documentaries including hit documentary Making A Murderer on wrongly jailed American student Amanda Knox for British student Meredith Kercher’s murder.
And the streaming service scooped three gongs at the Oscars for Best Director for Roma, Best Cinematography and Foreign Language Film while being nominated for Best Picture.
The Maddie movie will examine the high profile case and interview key figures and investigators. Film makers have made several trips to the family’s village to speak to locals and have also interviewed journalists who have been covering the story over the years.
The McCann’s have so far failed in their long running court battle to silence Mr Amaral over claims he made against them. They were eleft angry and disappointed after Portugal’s top court threw out their libel claim against the ex cop in January 2017. They vowed to contest the judgement, slamming it as ‘terrible.’
Kate, now a medical worker, had previously said that Mr Amaral’s poisonous words had been ‘very upsetting and incomprehensible.’ She added: ‘It has caused a lot of frustration and anger which is a real negative emotion.’
Victorious Mr Amaral said: ‘I’m pleased I have a court ruling which defends the freedom of expression.’
The Policia Judiciaria inspector led the initial bungled hunt for Maddie but was later pulled off the case after criticising British police assisting.
In his once banned book Mr Amaral claims Maddie accidentally died in an accident at the holiday flat or by being given an overdose of sedatives. It is based on statements from Portuguese police files which are open to the public.
Maddie’s parents fiercely denied his allegations. In their original 36-page writ they described Mr Amaral as a self obsessed, manipulative money-grabber and accuse him of libel and breaching their and their now 14-year-old twins human rights.
The divorcee, 59, has since blamed Kate and Gerry for wrecking his marriage and his career by taking legal action against him in June 2009.

U.S. Supreme Court nom Brett Kavanaugh’s sex assault accuser to testify Thursday: Sources
U.S. Supreme Court nom Brett Kavanaugh’s sex assault accuser to testify Thursday: Sources https://ift.tt/eA8V8J U.S. Supreme Court nom Brett Kavanaugh’s sex assault accuser to testify Thursday: Sources
WASHINGTON — Negotiators reached a tentative agreement Saturday for the Senate Judiciary Committee to hear testimony Thursday from Christine Blasey Ford, the woman accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault from decades ago, according to two people briefed on the matter.
Lawyers for Ford and bipartisan representatives of the committee came to the tentative agreement after a short phone call, said one of the people, who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity. The person said Kavanaugh would also appear.
Some details of the hearing, such as the order of their appearance, remained in negotiation. Talks were expected to continue Sunday.
Sparks fly as Trump weighs in on sex assault allegation against Kavanaugh
The tentative accord could bring to a close days of high-stakes brinkmanship that have roiled Washington ahead of midterm elections and threatened to jeopardize Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the court.
Tensions have been running on overdrive since Ford, a 51-year-old college professor in California, went public with her allegation that Kavanaugh assaulted her when they were at a house party in high school. Kavanaugh, 53, an appellate court judge, denied the allegation and said he wanted to testify as soon as possible to clear his name.
Ford initially indicated she wanted to tell her story to the committee, but talks dragged on as her lawyers negotiated terms of her appearance.
Republicans grew frustrated as Ford’s lawyers insisted on a hearing next Thursday rather than Monday or even Wednesday and made other requests, some of which the committee chairman, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, rejected. Democrats, against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement, countered that Ford should be shown respect and given accommodation to tell her story.
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "OJB_7pFeMv0", "pn_video_715755", "", "", {"is_mobile":""} ); } )(); //]]>
As the talks continued, Grassley countered that he would end the standoff by scheduling a Monday vote on whether to recommend Kavanaugh’s nomination to the full Senate. Meanwhile, Republicans viewed Ford’s requests as a way to delay voting on President Donald Trump’s nominee.
Earlier Saturday, a senior official at the White House said Ford’s requests amounted to “a clever way to push off the vote Monday without committing to appear Wednesday.” The official was not authorized to publicly discuss the negotiations and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The White House views Ford’s potential testimony with trepidation, nervous that an emotional performance might not just damage Kavanaugh’s chances but could further energize female voters to turn out against Republicans in November.
Moreover, the West Wing aides who had urged Trump to remain muted in his response to the accusations worried about how the president might react if she ended up partaking in an hourslong, televised hearing. In a single tweet Friday, Trump broke his silence to cast doubt on Ford’s story in ways Republicans had been carefully trying to avoid.
Trump mused to confidants that the “fake” attacks against his nominee were meant to undermine his presidency, according to a White House official and a Republican close to the White House. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss private conversations.
Other Republicans had scoffed at Ford’s willingness to tell her story. “When?” tweeted the No. 2 GOP Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a member of the committee.
When? https://t.co/Uq5tKoyPGD
— Senator John Cornyn (@JohnCornyn) September 22, 2018
Ford attorneys Debra Katz and Lisa Banks had said that many aspects of Grassley’s latest offer were “fundamentally inconsistent” with the committee’s promise of a “fair, impartial investigation.” They said they remained disappointed by the “bullying” that “tainted the process.”
Earlier Saturday, Vice-President Mike Pence called Kavanaugh “a man of integrity with impeccable credentials.” He expressed confidence that Republicans “will manage this confirmation properly with the utmost respect for all concerned” and said he expected Kavanaugh to join the high court soon.
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "BbRlAcFNLQ0", "pn_video_252989", "", "", {"is_mobile":""} ); } )(); //]]>
Patience among Republicans was running thin. The GOP has faced enormous pressure from its base of conservative leaders and voters to swiftly approve Kavanaugh, who would become the second of Trump’s nominees to sit on the nation’s highest court.
Grassley had set a Friday night deadline for Ford to agree to the committee’s latest terms for her appearance. Grassley said that if she missed that deadline, he would scrap the hearing and his committee would vote on sending Kavanaugh’s nomination to the full Senate.
Ford’s lawyers asked for another day. In a tweet aimed at Kavanaugh shortly before midnight, Grassley said he was giving them additional time.
“She shld decide so we can move on. I want to hear her. I hope u understand. It’s not my normal approach to b indecisive,” Grassley wrote.
Judge Kavanaugh I just granted another extension to Dr Ford to decide if she wants to proceed w the statement she made last week to testify to the senate She shld decide so we can move on I want to hear her. I hope u understand. It’s not my normal approach to b indecisive
— ChuckGrassley (@ChuckGrassley) September 22, 2018
In backing away from deadlines and demands, Grassley underscored the sensitivity with which Senate Republicans have tried handling Ford.
Katz had called Grassley’s original deadline “arbitrary” and said its “sole purpose is to bully Dr. Ford and deprive her of the ability to make a considered decision that has life-altering implications for her and her family.”
On Friday, Grassley had rejected concessions Ford wanted if she is tell her story publicly before the committee.
Grassley turned down Ford’s request that only senators, not attorneys, be allowed to ask questions. The committee’s 11 Republicans — all men — have been seeking an outside female attorney to interrogate Ford, mindful of the election-season impression that could be left by men trying to pick apart a woman’s assertion of a sexual attack.
He also rejected her proposal that she testify after Kavanaugh, a position lawyers consider advantageous because it gives them a chance to rebut accusations.
Grassley’s stance reflected a desire by Trump and GOP leaders to usher Kavanaugh onto the high court by the Oct. 1 start of its new session and before the November elections. Democrats are mounting a robust drive to grab congressional control.
Ford has said an inebriated Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed, muffled her cries and tried removing her clothes. Trump ended a week of constraint and sarcastically assailed Ford on Friday, tweeting that if the episode was “as bad as she says,” she or “her loving parents” surely would have reported it to law enforcement.
I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 21, 2018
Trump’s searing reproach defied the Senate Republican strategy, and the advice of White House aides, of not disparaging Ford while firmly defending his nominee and the tight timetable for confirming him.
The president’s tweet brought blistering rejoinders from Democrats and a mix of silence and sighs of regret from his own party. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who hasn’t declared support for Kavanaugh, called the remark “appalling.”
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "-7mcyPOH2Co", "pn_video_458952", "", "", {"is_mobile":""} ); } )(); //]]>
Grassley has rebuffed other Ford requests, including calling additional witnesses. Ford wants an appearance by Mark Judge, a Kavanaugh friend who Ford asserts was at the high school party and in the room where the incident occurred.
Grassley consented to other Ford demands, including that she be provided security and that Kavanaugh not be in the hearing room when she testifies. Her request for security comes after her lawyers said she has relocated her family due to death threats.

Story Time
So its August 26th which means it’s story time.
I am almost positive that 10 years ago on this date I began high school. It was my orientation day. I was excited, I walked to school for the very first time in my life. It was a half day so after we were dismissed I got to walk home. My siblings hadn't started school yet so they were home with my dad’s then girlfriend. We did not get along. Like the entire time they were together. I was such a momma’s girl that when we met his girlfriend, I stayed in the car as every one got out to greet her and I just stared at her. Savage little Kayla. Anyway. I went home and I ended up playing with Hot-wheels cars with my brother. I ended up upsetting him and he went to tell on me. My dad’s girlfriend called me over and let me know that she will be telling my dad what I did. Now my siblings and I were famous for fighting. Thats pretty much all we did. But I had not done anything wrong and my brother just wanted to get me into trouble.
Lets take it back for some context as to why this was a big deal. From the time I was 5 to then at 14, we had been living with our dad. I was like a guinea pig child that they tested the limits and practiced on. Because my dad was a single father of three children, it was really hard for him. I did not make that any easier when ever I wanted to act grown and talk back or make a point. So because of my behaviors I often found myself at the end of corporal punishment. A few weeks prior to this day of orientation, I had really tested my father’s patience and let him know who I was. LITERALLY. He asked me, Who do you think you are?” And my smart ass replied, “I am Kayla Marie daSilva.” Well he said oh yea, got up and grabbed me pulling me into the kitchen where he held me and grabbed the dish soap to put in my mouth. I was not about to let Lemon AJAX Dish Soap in my mouth so I fought to get out of his hold. As we both struggled, I turned my head just as he placed the spout to the bottle at my mouth. Due to the cap having a chip in it and the turning of my head it left a scratch going across my face. Good times. So just having this fight not that long before the threat of getting in trouble by my dad, made me just want to run and hide forever.
OK. Back to the story. I was scared because I just was so over all the fights, the hitting, the punishments, I knew something was going to happen. I went upstairs to my room and got the phone that my mom let me have from someone that we will discuss later down the road (she had groomed me and abused me without knowing what that even was. And she was living with my mom). I got the phone and called my mother. I told her what happened and that I was really scared for dad to come home because I was going to be in a lot of trouble when he did. My mom did not fully listen to me asking her to remove me and keep me safe because I was scared. She told me no and hung up the phone. I started crying because my only hope went out the window. My mom, my role model, my best friend just denied me safety. 14 year old Kayla did not think this advanced but I was devastated. I called her back over and over but no answer. A few minutes later, she is calling me back and tells me she is on her way. When my mom gets there she takes me to the police who grant her the night with me and what was done next was up to her.
Second day of high school and I was already absent. Instead of learning about manicures in Cosmetology, I was in court learning about a 51A. We filed on my dad. It was unsupported but the court did grant my mom the next 10 days of custody. We went back to court and my mom had officially got physical custody of me. Something I had dreamed of since the day she left my dad. Later on I learned that the reason my mom denied my request at first was because she had been getting high with her husband and the woman who was grooming me. I knew she had gotten into crack recently but did not know that was the reason. If it had not been for the groomer convincing my mother to get me, I would have been at my dad’s facing the wrath.
Now that I am older the question that conflicts me is: Should I have stayed with my dad and avoid all the things that were to come? Or was it good that the groomer convinced my mom to get me even though it allowed her more access to me than just the weekends? I don't think their is a win in the situation except for the fact that have made it.

How can I sort out this car insurance issue in the UK?
I've been living in the UK doing some studies for 3 years. When I came to the UK, I didn't know how to drive a car. Also, I found it difficult to pass the driving test in the UK and afford private driving lessons. Few months ago, I went for a 3-month holiday in my original country, Egypt. There, learning how to drive is much easier and less expensive. Besides, issuing a driving license is not so difficult as the theoretical and practical tests are not so complicated. Therefore, I decided to learn and get a national license. Based on this license, I could issue an international one from Cairo that allowed me to drive in some countries one of which is the UK. However, when I returned to the UK and decided to by car, I found a proper one for 550. I decided to buy it, but I was asked to go online to get a quote from a car insurance company. I spent the whole night trying all the websites that my friends told me about. The shocking fact is that many of them refused to give me a quote because I hold an international license, not a UK one. Even those websites which accepted that requested a huge amount of money (i.e. not less than 1, 200-1, 600) which is much higher than the price of the car itself. I wonder if there's a way to sort this out or if there's any alternative solution that saves money for me. I don't want to go through any further driving tests in the UK. Also, I don't want to provide wrong data (e.g. having a full-UK license). Your suggestions are highly valued (serious answers please as I really feel down!). Thanks so much in advance!""
""Would insurance be more expensive for a Nissan Sentra, or a Ford Fiesta?""
I live in Pa, either car I get will be financed. I got an offer for the Sentra for 72 Months for $275 a month, and the lowest car insurance for that would be $180 so far for that. I did not yet go out to look for a Ford Fiesta, but from what I hear they are less expensive on car insurance. I aparently have til Monday to give the Dealers my decision before the deal drops which I highly doubt , I think they were just telling me that to pressure me into making a quicker decision/mistake. My father has recently passed and his house is currently vacant. It is a small home only around 1,000 sq. ft. It hasn't been estimated recently but I would guess it's value around $60,000. Homes in the area are going for foreclosure for less than $30,000. My son plans on living in the home a year from now. How should we insure the home in the mean time? If we can find someone we know and trust we may rent it out in the mean time, if not, how should we? The home is currently in my sister and I's name. What do we need to do to keep costs down? How does car insurance work?
Okay, I'm 17 and I'm getting my first car this summer, maybe June. Thing is, I am only going to have my car from this June until March or April of 2009. The reason for that is that I'm moving to Mexico on one of those months. I would actually have liked not to buy my car now but I'm going to have to because where I live, there's absolutely no public transportation. (I live in the northern part of Texas.) I graduate high school in a couple of weeks and need to get to and from work. Up to now I had been working but work was pretty close and my aunt (which I live with) gave me rides. She's getting a job now too so I can't really be dependant on any one and I don't want to at all either. My big question here is... when I get my car, does car insurance come with a contract or something? I won't be here for a year so if it does, what's the minimum plan available? I will also be with my aunt's insurance so I will be included in their plan or however that works..""

Can auto insurance carrier deny claim due to their insured simply ignoring request for signed affidavit ?
Hi Have a question. My rear bumper was lightly tapped by 17 year old new driver. Damage is minor and cosmetic at $425. My car is only three years old and in perfect condition. The insured provided me all his insurance information and said to file a claim through his dad's insurance carrier. I called local police department 911 line to report minor collision. Officer responded and insured admitted to police officer that he tapped rear bumper. Police officer looked at my rear bumper and refused to make a police report as he said cannot issue a report unless damage is over $1500. I begged the officer repeatedly to please provide me even an incident report or something official like an affidavit as the teenager admitted to officer that he hit my rear bumper. Police Officer simply drove off and left me on the side of the road with a stranger. Of course now four weeks later, the insured and his father have simply ignored phone calls, emails and registered mail attempts by his insurance carrier to verify version. (not sure what version would be needed as my black paint is on his front bumper) I called the insured and his dad hung up on me twice. The insurance carrier told me they are denying and closing out the claim due to insured not responding. They said this is totally legal under Illinois State laws. (basically too bad, so sad) By the way this insurance company has unacceptable rating with state insurance board and BBB. I paid a body shop $425 in cash to fix car yesterday. Do I have recourse as I see my options would be to file a complaint with Illinois Banking and Insurance or file a small claims lawsuit against insured and insurance carrier (but that is an additional $119 court filing fee) Any ideas would be appreciated.""

How much does your insurance go up after a ticket?
I got to experience how effed up and corrupted California's judiciary system is today. I go to check if I'm eligible for traffic school at my courthouse because it never said I wasn't when I paid online and I find out that I'm not. I never got any notice or anything and the people who helped me said its not they're responsibility to tell me if I can go to traffic school or not. Government workers who get paid way to much dont have the time to give me a heads up on if I can go or not I guess. Its my responsibility to but this area is foreign to me, I dont know anything about these laws and everything that goes with it. So I lost out on a non-refundable 60 dollars for no reason. What happens to money at the end of life insurance term?

""If a teenager gets into a car accident, how long until their insurance rate goes back down?""
One of my friends was recently involved in a car crash which I believe he was at fault at. The other car didn't sustain much damage, but his car took quite a beating. He's only 17, and he's basically in a shell shock right now since it was his first accident. He told me that he feels really guilty about the fact that his insurance his gonna spike up (State Farm) and he feels so bad for the fact his dad is gonna be having to pay for it. So my question is..will his insurance always be that high for the rest of his driving life until he's old? Or will it steadily go back down?""
Best auto insurance company for young adults?
So after working hard in college and multiple internships, I am going to graduate college in three years and best of all, managed to score an incredible job with Boeing aerospace division in this toilet of an economy. I even managed to use most of my savings to buy an apartment. However, after all this, I realized I was missing a crucial thing. A car(i live far from work). I only drove in my highschool years, so I am completely oblivious when it comes to insurance rates and what not. So my questions are as follow: 1.Is it better to have an older car or newer car as far as premium amounts go? I used to fix cars with another mechanic, so im not worried about an older car breaking down. 2. I am 20 years old, in your experience, what company is the best for young adults? I have no criminal records and no accidents from my highschool years. 3. How much insurance should I buy? In other words, should i just buy coverage for the other person if i hit someone, or should I buy coverage for my own car as well? 4. Just generally, in what range should I expect to pay? Just curious, I have to get it whether I like it or not. 5. Finally, any good tips on bartering with the insurance company to get a lower premium? You dont have to answer all the questions, feel free to just answer one, any help is appreciated!""

What do you think America can do to make more health insurance affordable?
What insurance would take her?
Wife's best friend is a natural-born U.S. citizen and California resident for decades. She is 49 years old, single mother of a teenager, and has no health insurance. She has a rather large (presumably benign) tumor in her belly that makes her look 4 months pregnant. According to her research, it's a cystic fibrosis, a single lump at or near her reproductive organs. It's been growing for years and has not been diagnosed. In fact, she hasn't seen a doctor since about 1999. She knows that she'll need surgery and wants to get health insurance, but obviously has a pre-existing condition. There are high risk pools for that, but she's unsure how to proceed. Should she go to the doctor, get the tumor diagnosed and then try to get insurance? Should she try to get insurance, yet list her undiagnosed condition on the application in order to be denied? She doesn't make much money, but she knows there's no way around this. Any advice on how to proceed? Thank you.""
In need of a good dental insurance plan in South Florida.
I desperately need braces but I can't afford them, neither can my parents. I have two teeth that I call my shark teeth because they grew in back of my normal line of teeth. One on the top, and one on the bottom. So it bothers the hell out of my tongue and I can't stand it anymore. I'm always getting those annoying sore taste buds, like one would get if they bite their tongue, on my tongue because one of my shark teeth is my fang so it hurts like hell. I need to fix my teeth but I'll need a good dental insurance plan that covers a big percentage of the cost of my braces. And it cant be just a dental discount plan, those on average only discount 25% and I need more than that. I'm 17, I live with my parents and they'll be paying for it, but it will only be a single plan, not a family plan. I live in South Florida. So if anyone can give me the name of a great insurance plan, then you'll be a miracle worker. Thank you.""

Would it be a good economic decision to lower my limits of liability on my car insurance?
I'm looking at my bills, and trying to cut costs, would it be wise to lower the limits of liability on our older (2004) car. I currently do not have comprehensive coverage on it... we only have that on the newer one. Here's what I have now: Bodily Injury - 25,000 / 50,000 Property Damage - 50,000 Personal Injury - 10,000 Uninsured Motor Vehicle - 25,000 Bodily Injury (non-stacked) - 50,000 Really, my husband only uses this car to go to work and back. Maternity related services considered inpatient for insurance?
"Maternity related services considered inpatient for insurance?
Most individual plans (87%) do not offer maternity coverage. I was fortunate enough to still be covered under an old employer by paying COBRA, and a majority of my expenses were covered. I had twins and had to have a C-Section. So now that I know I'm most likely to have a C-Section again, and who knows, another set of twins! (complete surprise) and am still of child bearing age. I am now under an individual plan, that does not offer maternity coverage. I was reading under the 'Inpatient' services and it listed this: Unlimited coverage is provided for medically necessary physician and surgeon services

Health insurance rates. Switch or stay?
In the past 2 years my family's health care plan (which is offered through my husband's work) has gone from great to way too expensive. We pay 250 a month as a premium, then we have a 1,000 each deductible, then our copays kick in 25 for office visit, 35 for specialty, 100 emergency room visit (must be okayed by dr. first, or they don't pay anything), 100 each day in the hospital. Perscription copays are 25/30/50, and not all things are covered. Two years ago we paid 275/a month and had 20 copays for everything (except hospital stays were always 100 and perscriptions they were 5/10/20). They do not pay for any vision, dental, or contraceptive. Certain (most) perscriptions are not covered. Is this similar to what everyone is paying, or should we start looking outside of his work for insurance?""

My auto insurance raised twice as much for not being insured for more then 30-days?
I had auto insurance with state farm and my policy was $180 (just liablilty)per month for 12 months. I ran into some issues with money and could not pay so I cancelled the policy and avoided driving for a little over a month. I recently went to another agency to find a cheaper insurance and they said since i had a registered vehicle that was uninsured for more than 30 days, there is a penalty. Now I pay $340 for 8 months (just liablilty). 3 agency's told me the same thing. My question is will this ever change? How long will I have this penalty ? Where can I get private health insurance?

I know several people who are alcoholics who have an HMO through their retirement and they are in the hospital every other month, simply because they have over drank. They run to the doctor every two months for very trivial things/ I know of several who abuse the veterans hospital from runny noses to a simple headache, plus they are paid monthly for a disabilty they don't have. They just don't want to work. I think married couples should only be able to use one insurance policy, and these others should be only allowed to go to the doctor a few times a year. If they are an alcoholic send them to AA.""
Mini Coopers? Cheap? Insurance? Safe? First car!?

Do you need to be enrolled in school to stay covered under your parents health insurance? Affordable Care Act?
So here's the question in case you don't want to read my wall of text below (but it would be appreciated if you did to further understand my question). I was covered under my moms health insurance while in college and I was told I needed to be enrolled in school to stay covered, I dropped out a while ago and was wondering if I am still covered by law under the Affordable Care Act since I am only 19. I was covered under my mothers health insurance, she works for a private company and she said that I needed to be enrolled in school in order to stay covered by the insurance. But this was close to a year ago if I'm remembering correctly. The reason I'm worried is because I'm taking a break from college, and have had multiple doctor appointments/tests done after I left, but I never had a problem with the insurance going through. I've made myself paranoid into thinking that the company may just not know, and is assuming I'm still in school and will randomly hit me with the costs of the testings and doctor visits if they saw I was not in school, or god forbid somewhere down the road my mother or I are in a serious accident and are dropped because of this. I know this happens all the time, the insurance agencies have people hired to find abnormalities in your history in an attempt to drop you and not have to pay the bills. My car insurance and my driver license will be suspended?
Here is my story . Don't be harsh to me because I know my driving is bad I have been driving with this car for 7 months. I paid premium coverage. I did hit a divider myself and then I claimed my insurance in order to get my car repaired ( this time cost like $3000) After that 3 months, I hit a car in a parking lot. Another driver claimed my insurance and the insurance company paid them $600 to fix their car. After that 2 months, I again hit another car in the parking lot. I renewed my insurance in Jan. Before I paid $800 for 6 months, this time I paid $1900 for 1 year policy. Yesterday , I really hit another car on the road. I claimed my insurance again because the other driver's car really bad and I don't think I can pay off. My questions are : Should I pay deductible in order to get my car repaired because my car bad too and the body shop said It would cost 1k to 1.5k( because of the old damage) Will my license get suspended? Im living in CA and never get any tickets and this accident is the only one has police report? How will my insurance increase? Right now Im so stressed and confused about what Im going to ? I have a part time morning job working as a teacher's aide 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. that I love and don't want to give up but I will never have more hours or insurance. I need to get an afternoon job with insurance because my health insurance jumps to $600.00 per month in July!!! Does this letter help explain why insurance is expensive?
This is a letter from Anthem to Sec. Sebelius back on February 11th, almost a month ago. It explains why insurance in California is high and what factors have led to the increase. It seems pretty clear to me and yet the President claims that he has asked for and has yet to receive a cogent response from the insurance company for this increase. Seems pretty cogent to me. Maybe the President is just a slow learner or the fact that he doesn't have any education or experience in business or economics make the concepts difficult for him to grasp. http://www.wellpoint.com/pdf/SebeliusLetter02112010.pdf Notice that they mention that their rates are less than the 'not for profits' and that much of their increase is the result of Medicare patients needing supplementary insurance because Medicare won't cover them. Notice, too, that the cost of insurance is directly associated with the cost of health care. You can't reduce the cost of insurance without reducing the cost of health care. Obama's initiative does nothing to reduce the cost of CARE. Wonder why that is. Could there be an ulterior motive? So what do you think? Do you have any questions? And please don't waste our time. Read the thing before you respond.""

How long have i had car insurance?

This policy was taken out on 31/7/06. On 9/11/06 I past my driving test. On 31/07/07 I renewed my car insurance with virgin and with the 31/07/08 soon approaching I must again renew my car insurance. The problem is I will in fact have had two year no claims on 31/07/08 which Virgin recognises, however when I go on their and any other online car insurers websites it says that my no claims (2 years) cannot exceed my full license period (1 year 9 months) So the question is, will my car insurance be recognised by other insurers as been held for two years?""

I was in an auto accident without insurance. What am I facing?
I was in a car accident yesterday. I live in California. I had no insurance at the time, although I was unaware that my girlfriend had not sent in my quarterly paryment and was actually driving without insurance for almost 3 months. The day after the accident I went in to the Highway Patrol's office and spoke to the officer who took the report and informed him I discovered I had no insurance. He didnt seem all that concerned and thanked me for going in. As for the accidnet itself, I belief I will be found at fault as I did not brake in time and rear end a small car who in turn hit the car infront of her. I was traveling at about 30 mph when I started to brake and I heard the firefighter at the seen tell the chp he thought it was 25-30 mph. If anyone could tell me what I am facing legally and finacially. I read online I will automatically have a one year driver's license suspension. Is this accurate and is this all? WIll I ge a ticked or fine? I would also like for someone to rule out jail time. The driver immediately infront of me had good damage to the back of her car and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Her daughter called me the day after the accident and told me she was at her house but wanted her car fixed soon because she wanted to return home in another state. I suggested she call her own insurance and let them know I was inot insured. THe other driver in front and her passenger were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries and their car had minor damage when I looked at it at the time of the accident. I have not heard from them. Financially can anyone tell me what I am facing? I understand I will be responsible, but I also understand that the other parties' insurances will have to cover their own drivers. If so will I simply be responsible for their deductable. I am more concerned with the legal aspects than the financial. I am an single father of three and need to be there for my kids. Thank you to whoever can help!""

MIA’S PLAN WON’T FLY – Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur says it is highly unlikely that a Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Government would be able fulfil many of its campaign promises, including one its signature plans to reinstate free tertiary education, if it goes to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In fact, Arthur, who is a trained economist and former Minister of Finance for 14 years, warned today that instead of a repeal of tuition payments instituted by the current Democratic Labour Party (DLP) led administration, Barbadian students attending the University of the West Indies could be asked to pay both tuition and economic costs. “I don’t think the Fund is going to support the payment of tuition fees for university education in Barbados. In fact, I think that the situation has gotten so bad [with the economy] that if you go to the Fund now, having just exhausted every opportunity, the Fund may tell the Government that they can no longer pay the economic cost,” Arthur told reporters during a press conference at Barbados TODAY’s, Manor Lodge, St Michael office this morning. Arthur, who has been persistently recommending over the past two years ago that the island enters into a formal programme with the Washington-based IMF to stop the free fall of Barbados’ foreign reserves, argued that with the reserves now at $423 million, 5.1 weeks under the recommended 12 weeks of import cover, Barbadians should brace themselves for a no frills, rough ride under any programme agreed to with the Fund. In 2014, amid serious economic challenges, the DLP implemented its decision for students attending the UWI to pay 20 per cent of their tuition costs, in effort to save Government $35 million per year. The move has resulted in hardship for many Barbadian students who have been forced to drop out of the tertiary institution. However, last year at her party’s 79th annual conference, Mottley gave the commitment that a BLP Government would immediately repeal the DLP’s decision if elected in the upcoming poll. This pledge has since made its way into the BLP’s 70-page manifesto released last week ahead of the May 24 poll, which also includes proposals for the abolition of road tax, removal of the National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL), an increase in non-contributory old age pensions and an across-the-board pay hike or cost of living allowance for Government workers within the next three to six months. During last Thursday’s BLP manifesto launch, Mottley also proclaimed that she was not afraid to go to the IMF if that were required to turn the ailing Barbados economy around. However this morning, Arthur, who has had a hand in drafting Grenada’s successful IMF programme, argued that if Mottley were seriously considering the IMF as an option, it was a contradiction to speak of “lofty giveaways”. The trained economist contended that the BLP’s promises were geared at winning an election but had not accounted for the reality of running a Government, which “likely has no option, but to go the Fund”. “If you go to the Fund, you cannot feel as though it is a bed of roses,” Arthur cautioned, pointing out that “when [former Prime Minister] Erskine Sandiford went to the Fund in 1991 the choice was between devaluation or cut public sector wages by eight per cent. “A new Government is not going to be able to cut wages because the Constitution now prevents that, but they would take the IMF’s money on the understanding that they would restore external and internal stability,” he said. “That would mean accepting policies that would restore your reserves by US$500 million over a five year period,” Arthur explained. However, he said “the problem is that Government gives a lot transfers so that state services can be maintained, such as free services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and free secondary education. Those transfers are going to have to be adjusted under the IMF,” he said. The former Prime Minister therefore suggested that Government would need to implement a combination of means testing, privatization of some state assets and tax incentives to encourage persons to save for health and education. (BT)

NOT ME! – Former Prime Minister Owen Arthur is making it clear that he had absolutely nothing to do with any major tax write-offs for either the father of Barbados Labour Party (BLP) leader Mia Mottley, or for Barclays Bank. The just-retired St Peter representative issued the clear-the-air statement today while joining with Prime Minister Freundel Stuart in calling on Mottley to give full account of both dubious financial transactions, which reportedly occurred as soon as he turned his back and left the country when the BLP last held office. Addressing a Democratic Labour Party (DLP) meeting last night, Stuart dropped the bombshell news as questions continue to swirl around an alleged meeting between Mottley and Nigerian billionaire Benedict Peters. He called on the BLP leader to give account of millions of dollars in tax waivers, which reportedly occurred under the last BLP administration, including a near half million-dollar write-off to her dad. “Elliott Deighton Mottley had two judgments lodged against him for monies due and owing to the Income Tax Department upwards of $1 million. In 1998, I walked in the Registry one morning and everyone had frowns on their faces. They were saying that here it is that we have to pay our taxes but yet over $400,000 of that tax obligation was being written off by the Owen Arthur administration,” Stuart told the DLP meeting at Carlisle House car park, The City. The Prime Minister however sought to distance his BLP predecessor from the dubious transaction, explaining that while Arthur had denied the request for the write-off, it was granted as soon as he left the country. “My most diligent enquiries revealed that the matter had been raised with Arthur and he said under no condition could that write-off be given, but as soon as he turned his back and travelled overseas, it happened,” Stuart claimed, adding that “there was a certain stage in Arthur’s incumbency that he was afraid to go as far as St Vincent because he did not know what he would find when he returned”. While calling on Mottley, who acted as prime minister in Arthur’s absence from the island, to reveal who was behind the decision, the DLP leader also charged that in 2002, during the merger of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and Barclays, a circumvention by a member of the then Arthur Cabinet had cost the country $87 million in property transfer tax and stamp duty. This morning Arthur said he was both disappointed and surprised to learn of the write-off for Sir Elliott, which he said should be criminally investigated since approval for such waivers needed to be given by both Cabinet and Parliament. “I am in a position to say that Mottley’s father would have applied to me for a waiver of the tax and it was truly outrageous for Elliott Mottley, with a daughter in Cabinet, to apply to me to waive that kind of tax for him,” the former Prime Minister explained, while stressing that no approval was given by him. Though stating that he did not know on whose authority the waiver was granted, Arthur suggested that there would have had to have been “a conspiracy to defraud the Treasury because a Minister of Finance said no to the tax waiver”. The former prime minister, who served between 1994 and 2008, also said had he been aware of the write-off, the perpetrator would have been fired. He also said he was equally unaware of the circumstances under which the Barclays waiver was granted, explaining that he had recused himself from that transaction due to the fact that he was shareholder in CIBC. However, in support of another disclosure made by Stuart last night, Arthur confirmed that he was being enticed by current BLP leader Mia Mottley, as well as political strategist Hartley Henry and a prime minister from another Caribbean Community country to sign the Petrocaribe oil deal with Venezuela in exchange for campaign financing from then Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. “The purpose of the meeting was to get me to agree to go to Venezuela to meet Hugo Chavez to arrange to get campaign financing for the Barbados Labour Party on condition that I would change the position that I held as Prime Minister of Barbados on Petrocaribe,” Arthur said. All CARICOM member states with the exception of Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados signed on to the Petrocaribe framework agreement back in June 2005, which allows countries to purchase oil on a delayed payment system. Arthur, who held a press conference this morning at Barbados TODAY’s Manor Lodge, St Michael office, said there was a record of the meeting in question. “The meeting was held at a house with Hartley Henry and the Prime Minister of the Caribbean country. Mr Stuart is in a position to speak to it because I called in the Venezuelan ambassador, so there is a record. “I also briefed my deputy Dale Marshall. I refused to go because there was no circumstance under which I was going to agree to surrender Barbados’ foreign policy for a campaign contribution. So the Barbados Labour Party had to do without that funding that year,” said Arthur, who revealed that the offer was in the millions of dollars. (BT)
DON’T MIND THE BLP CRITICS SAYS MASCOLL – Barbados Labour Party (BLP) economic advisor Clyde Mascoll is proposing that Government makes it mandatory for the hotel sector to pay a tax in foreign exchange in order to help shore up the island’s struggling international reserves. The economist put forward the idea on Monday as he stoutly defended the BLP’s plan to restructure the country’s debt while removing the National Social Responsibility Levy, scrapping the road tax for a tax at the pumps, and reducing the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 17.5 per cent back to 15 per cent after two years, should that party form the next Government after the May 24 general election. In its recently released manifesto, the BLP said it would also increase non-contributory pension, a plan which critics, including former Prime Minister Owen Arthur have dismissed as “pie in the sky” and “madness” that could force the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) into bankruptcy. However, taking part in a Barbados Economic Society (BES) forum today at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Plans for Economic Adjustment: Post General Election, Mascoll insisted that the BLP’s proposals were sound. “The notion that a policymaker would seek to bankrupt the NIS or seek to advise a Government with such recklessness is unfounded,” said Mascoll, while insisting that there was need for the tax system to be simplified, and anyone who did not understand the proposal of replacing the road tax with a tax at the pumps “must be someone who doesn’t want to listen”. Mascoll said in addition to the proposed changes in taxes, Government would also have to address the high debt and falling reserves through “a mixture of defensive attacks”. “We are proposing that there has to be some kind of reform, simplification of the tax system in a way that permits us to not only defend, but to attack,” he said, adding that the most sustainable way for growth in the economy would also require capital expenditure by Government and private sector investment. The university lecturer suggested that Government makes legislative changes in an effort to make hoteliers pay a tax in foreign currency, pointing out that there was speculation that the country was not getting enough of the earnings from the sector. “The taxation in tourism can be rejigged and altered in such a way that you ask or make the hoteliers pay a tax in foreign exchange. If there is a room tax on a hotel, the tourist pays that tax. A VAT should not discriminate,” he said. “What could be so wrong in asking the hoteliers to pay some of their tax in the form of foreign exchange. What will happen is that money then goes directly to the Central Bank through the Treasury. So you don’t have to wait until a commercial bank feels its okay to sell the Central Bank,” the former Central Bank employee said. He questioned why Government was reporting that the tourism sector was performing “extremely well”, but at the same time saying that global economic environment was “responsible for our plight”. “I have been trying to figure this out now for a decade. How it is that the external environment is responsible for Barbados’ bad position, but yet still tourism is growing. I have not yet been able to reason it out,” Mascoll said. In his presentation, leader of Solutions Barbados Grenville Phillips II warned that the country was on the brink of economic ruin, while insisting that it was a result of mismanagement on the part of successive Democratic Labour Party and BLP administrations. Highlighting the country’s high debt, and “excessive” borrowing by the last administration, Phillips suggested that if Government wanted to go to the IMF for assistance it should have done so “no later than 2009 when people still had sufficient savings to cushion the foreseen austerity”. He said three years ago Solutions Barbados had published its “non-austerity option” that would provide the island with “a surplus in our first year”, adding that it was independently assessed and deemed “workable”. Phillips said that economic plan did not require debt restructuring, but without giving details, said it would call for addressing “the structural issues in the economy”, “without laying off a single civil servant [and] without reducing any of their salaries”. It would also include the “elimination” of the VAT. However, Mascoll dismissed the plan, saying it was “voodoo economics” because it was impossible to realize a surplus without the VAT, which was one of Government’s most significant revenue earning measures. “I heard some voodoo economics earlier that you can get rid of a billion dollars in VAT and still have a surplus and there is no austerity. I need to find which planet I can go to in order to understand that economics,” said Mascoll. (BT)
MARSHALL SEES SOME VALUE IN BLP PLAN – At least one senior academic is not about to entirely dismiss the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) highly criticized manifesto. Though warning that political parties had to be careful not to engage in any bait-and-switch schemes as they seek to entice the electorate to vote for them in the May 24 general election, Director and Senior Fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute Dr Don Marshall told Barbados TODAY he felt that some aspects of the BLP’s plan were workable, while others just required a little bit of rejigging. “So I think a little tweaking here or there would suffice to make it more realistic,” Marshall said. During its manifesto launch on Thursday night in Kingsland, Christ Church, BLP economic advisor Clyde Mascoll explained that the party would abolish road tax and make it a requirement for vehicle owners to pay a small tax on gas. He also said that it was the BLP’s plan to increase non-contributory pension, remove tuition fees for Barbadians studying at the University of the West Indies (UWI), remove the National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL), and reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 17.5 per cent back to 15 per cent, should that party form the next Government. Reacting to the news today, Marshall told Barbados TODAY the planned removal of the NSRL was not a good strategy and since Government still needed to raise revenue, reprofiling the country’s debt was simply not enough. “I think if the Barbados Labour Partybecomes the Government it would do well to use the confidence provided by a new mandate, to think through the tax strategy that in the short-term would not lessen what we are currently taking in. I don’t think it needs to go towards a bait-and-switch strategy to woo voters. I think Barbadians are well advised and appreciate the need to bring in some revenue. There may be some ease in one or two areas, but certainly . . . abolishing the NSRL, that is not a good strategy,” Marshall insisted. The international political economist said while the plan to remove tuition fees for Barbadians studying at the UWI seemed attractive, it could do with some alteration. “The tuition fee could be a useful strategy. You could engage in a conversation of students paying back afterwards . . . . [It] would be to suggest restoring the full 100 per cent, but asking students to pay upon completion of their degree, the fees they are currently asked to pay, before starting their programmes,” he explained. Marshall however suggested that whichever administration forms the next Government “it will be a point for them to meet with key personnel from the United Progressive Party and Solutions Barbados to discuss plans on the way forward”. “I don’t think any of the leaders of the parties could pretend that they have all the answers, nor do I think they would want to appoint International Monetary Fund officials to do the imagining for them,” he said, while cautioning that the public sector should be repurposed before any attempt to cut expenditure. (BT)
LOWE: MORE FISCAL MEASURES NEEDED – The need for more fiscal measures will not vanish after next week’s General Election, says Barbados Economic Society (BES) president Shane Lowe. Speaking yesterday at a national economic debate hosted by the BES and the Chartered Financial Analysts Society of Barbados at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Lowe said: “Given the need to boost capital works to enhance physical infrastructure and few sources of financing, a new administration will need to cut current expenditure and/or raise tax revenues more than the existing fiscal gap to sustainably balance the budget and provide enough room to finance necessary infrastructure upgrades.” The bad news, he added, was that “more austerity could further slow growth of the Barbadian economy unless private sector investment rebounds”. “Thus, improved conditions for doing business and the courage to facilitate innovation in new and exciting economic sectors are necessary to enable economic recovery,” he said. Lowe also said that “without substantial growth in financial inflows, planned debt service payments will likely further reduce the stock of foreign exchange reserves”. Participating in the debate, United Progressive Party spokesman Bruce Hennis said his party’s strategy for the economy would focus on the export of creative services. “The net effect is to become an export-led, highly innovative, high growth economy where we are earning foreign exchange and having a high level of growth within the economy itself,” he said. Solutions Barbados leader Grenville Phillips II said his party, if elected, would address structural issues affecting the economy. “We have costed our proposals, [and we] would run a surplus without laying off a single civil servant, without reducing any salaries and while we eliminate [value added tax] . . . . There would be no austerity,” he said. (DN)
CHRIS: I WILL NOT BE BULLIED - How Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler will respond to threats to sue him unless he withdraws “defamatory statements” by today is unclear. His lawyers are dealing with the matter, the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) candidate said yesterday, as he declined to comment on the issue involving Nigerian billionaire Benedict Peters, who it has now been confirmed was in Barbados in 2016. On Sunday night during the DLP mass meeting at Carlisle Car Park, The City, Sinckler revealed that Queen’s Counsel Leslie Haynes had sent him a letter accusing him of defaming Peters, the founder of the Aiteo Group, at the DLP’s launch meeting at Waterford, St Michael, on May 6. The letter stated: “In particular, you alleged that my client met with ‘the leadership of the Barbados Labour Party at the Hilton Hotel’ and the said leadership was seeking to get money from my client. You further suggested that my client was ‘funneling money into the Barbados elections just like the Russians were putting money in the American elections’. You categorically stated that ‘Nigerian money is trying to influence the outcome of the election’, clearly suggesting that my client is the source of such money. “Most egregiously, you made references to Boko Haram, a notoriously renowned Islamic terrorist organisation, and so interspersed references to my client by name as to suggest that he is involved with that organisation.” He listed and denied the allegations in the letter. “In their natural, ordinary and innuendo meanings, your words mean and were understood to mean that:
(a) My client is seeking improperly to influence the outcome of the 2018 General Elections;
(b) He is providing large sums of money to the Barbados Labour Party for the purpose of influencing the outcome of the said elections;
(c) He is associated with a terrorist organisation;
(d) He is a criminal or has criminal propensities and/or is associated with Boko Haram, an Islamic terrorist organisation that kidnaps schoolgirls;
(e) He is anti-democracy and is prepared to use his money for the improper purpose of influencing the outcome of elections. “The words used by you are completely false, baseless and malicious. They constitute a serious and grave defamation of my client personally and professionally. They have caused my client great hurt, distress and international embarrassment.” Peters’ name first came to light when Sinckler said he visited Barbados and met with Mottley, which Sinckler questioned. On Sunday night the first tangible evidence of Peters’ presence on the island came to light with the letter. “He [Peters] instructs me that he met with Ms Mottley while on a family vacation in Barbados and the two discussed global affairs and investment opportunities in Barbados and the wider Caribbean. Furthermore, that since that meeting, back in September of 2016, he has not met with or had any contact with Ms Mottley or any member of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). “Indeed, he does not today have a phone number, email address nor other direct contact information for Ms Mottley or any member of the leadership of the BLP, and has definitely not contributed, in cash or kind, to the campaign of the BLP, neither before nor since that meeting in September 2016,” the letter stated. That part prompted Sinckler to query why Peters didn’t meet with Government officials. The letter concluded: “I call upon you on or before 15 May 2018, to withdraw and retract the defamatory statements and their imputations made by you and apologise to my client in terms to be approved by me, for your defamation of him. “If you do not comply with the demands in the preceding paragraph, please be advised that my client will forthwith take such action against you as he may be advised, including commencing proceedings in the High Court of Barbados for damages, an injunction and legal costs. In the meantime, my client reserves all his rights in this matter.” Sinckler tore up the copy of the letter and said he would not be bullied into silence. “I born here, my navel string bury here, and nobody can come from Nigeria and try to bully me,” he declared. (DN)
SINCKLER PRESENTS CONSTITUENCY MANIFESTO – Chris Sinckler formally presented his manifesto to constituents in St Michael North West tonight while proclaiming he had ten years of strong parliamentary representation. Waving the booklet Ten Years Strong at the platform mounted at Free Hill, Black Rock, St Michael, Sinckler said that over the course of his two terms 18 roads had been repaired or new ones constructed. He also invoked the name of his predecessor Lawson Weekes, the longest-serving member of Parliament for the area and in whose name the branch developed a scholarship programme. Sinckler said out of that programme hundreds of children benefited and some received school supplies. He responded to comments about his giving away iPads, televisions and other devices by pointing out that his staff solicited the items from others. He said last Christmas the office gave away 750 hampers in the constituency and held a 1000-strong Christmas party. "When you have the best you don't worry about the rest. We are not going back. I ask humbly for your continued support," he concluded. His presentation was followed by candidates James Paul, Steve Blackett and Michael Carrington who praised Sinckler and encouraged the members of the constituency to re-elect him. (DN)
INCE: DLP HELPS POOR PEOPLE – Democratic Labour Party (DLP) candidate for St George North Jepter Ince said he was surprised that John King, Barbados Labour Party (BLP) candidate for St Philip West, decided to join the BLP when he and his family are supposedly strong DLP supporters. Ince was the first speaker at a DLP meeting at St Patrick’s, Christ Church. He added that the DLP is always selected as the party of choice to bring the country out of a crossroads. He said that history shows that the DLP, especially during the oil crisis of 1974 to 76, helped poor people put food on the table. (DN)
BLP TACKLES ISSUES IN VILLA ROAD – The Barbados Labour Party mounted one of its platforms in Villa Road, Brittons Hill, St Michael tonight. Among those speaking was incumbent for St James Central Kerrie Symmonds who produced a 2012 letter which he claimed was from Preconco’s managing director Mark Maloney to the director of the National Housing Corporation. In that letter, Symmonds said Maloney asked government to let him complete housing units with tiles and kitchen components before putting them on the market. Symmonds suggested this was evidence that the Democratic Labour Party-led government was prepared to rent incomplete units to people. Meanwhile, candidate for St Michael South Central Marsha Caddle said there needed to be a greater look at how young people are handled in the judicial system. She said a BLP government would look at controversial acts such as the recently amended Police Act and possibly have them repealed. Also speaking was party leader Mia Mottley who announced the BLP would be engaging in a National First Job Initiative in order to give young people the chance to learn on the job. (DN)
NO SOLUTION – Do not entertain the International Monetary Fund (IMF)! That advice has come from Solutions Barbados’ candidate for St Philip South Ronald Lorde, who has warned that any relationship entered with that financial institution would lead to the downfall of Barbados. “I remember hearing one of the parties currently on a quest to become the next Government saying they have not ruled out the IMF, but I want you to rule them out. “Be sure that they are not your next Government. I want you to ensure that Solutions Barbados is the next Government because our tax policies, our policy on education, our policy on agriculture and energy will ensure a better Barbados for us all,” Lorde said during a spot meeting at Country View Estates Recreational Park in St Patrick’s, Christ Church yesterday evening. His comments come in the wake of a pronouncement made last Thursday by the leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Mia Mottley that she is not afraid to go to the IMF route if that were required to turn the ailing Barbados economy around. Unveiling her party’s manifesto at Kingsland, Christ Church ahead of the May 24 general elections, Mottley, who is confident of winning, said while such a decision could only be made after an assessment of the true state of the economy, she was prepared to make the tough call if she had to. “I said it before that we would do whatever is necessary, that is legal and moral, to rescue this country. Does that mean going to the IMF? It may, we don’t know. But when we get the results in the first few days [of taking office], we will be able to make the judgement,” Mottley said, while pointing out that Barbados had gone to the IMF before and that each time it had done so, the economy rebounded. “The IMF was set up for purposes such as this and that is why you heard [former Prime Minister] Owen Arthur in Parliament months ago talking about it; that is why you heard of Tom Adams going in 1981 and Erskine Sandiford going to the Fund and each time, Barbados came out of it. The IMF is not the only way, but it allows us the confidence to deal with partners and capital markets,” Mottley explained. However, Lorde cautioned that “if we wait or depend on the IMF, which obviously means an increase in debt, it means a further stranglehold around our necks. “It means we are going to struggle a little more, it means that we are going to have to do without the things which we so love. It means we are going hand in glove to somebody else who will determine our own future when I believe as a country we need to determine our own future.” Also addressing the Country View meeting, the St Michael South candidate for Solutions Barbados Paul Gibson dismissed as “an open book”, the BLP’s manifesto in which it promises to abolish tuition fees for Barbadian students attending the University of the West Indies, as well as road tax and the dreaded National Social Responsibility Levy in addition to granting a pay hike or cost of living allowance to public servants as well as a hike in old age pensions. In fact, Gibson advised eligible voters to dismiss the BLP altogether. “I want you to be very sober and very aware. Do not go behind the BLP. As a matter of fact run from them, run away from them,” Gibson said. “The reason you have to run away from the BLP is because you are being hoodwinked and fooled. They made us feel like they were the saviours and they had a solution to fix Barbados, but they do not have a solution. “I’m sorry to tell you, but they brought out a book with nothing in it. They brought a book with no fix. They brought a book and suggested they had the answers, but it is all smoke,” he added. Gibson warned that if the BLP were elected, between 10, 000 and 15, 000 public servants would lose their jobs as the party turns to the IMF for a financial bailout. “They are making a lot of promises that cannot be kept. They are asking Barbadians to follow after them, but it is all aboard over a cliff! “Look, be very, very careful. Be warned . . . Mia cares for herself as far as I am concerned. The reason why I say that is because you cannot be seriously thinking of directing Barbados and taking us to the IMF,” Gibson said. (BT)
TAXI DRIVERS GIVE THUMBS DOWN TO BLP ROAD TAX PLAN – One of the key planks of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) election campaign is proving unpopular with taxi operators in Broad Street, Bridgetown. The BLP’s pledge to abolish road tax and replace it with a tax on petrol is not going down well with the taxi drivers, some of whom have dismissed it as an election gimmick. “It is total nonsense because public service vehicles going to have problems. I have no problem paying road tax when the year comes and then putting in gas in my car,” one operator who referred to himself as Rockweller told Barbados TODAY. “She [BLP leader Mia Mottley] is making promises that she cannot keep. She is making madman promises. I feel she going mad. She promising things, but one minute you saying that the country in this amount of debt and then all of a sudden you can do all of these things. She gine mad, that is what I have to say,” he stressed. The sentiments among those who spoke to Barbados TODAY, most of them anonymously, were similar. The general feeling was that the BLP was seeking to attract votes by offering carrots that could not be sustained. “I feel it is just a catch to get votes. I believe that to remove the tax from vehicles will do some serious damage. So I do not feel that that one gine make sense. It is a political catch. It might not materialize,” one driver, who did not want to be identified, said. Clyde Mascoll, the BLP’s economic advisor, said at the launch of the party’s manifesto last Thursday night that the road tax would be replaced by a fairer tax on petrol, which would ensure that those who made greater use of the island’s road bear the greater burden. “We are abolishing the road tax. However, we can’t be irresponsible so what we are going to do is shift the tax towards the business community. Those people, who use the road most, should pay most. It is called equity and justice. We are going to transfer the road tax to a small tax on fuel so those that are on the road all day with heavy vehicles would pay proportionally,” Mascoll said. However, one taxi operator who identified himself as Tony, said the petrol tax would be particularly damaging to those involved in freighting and the taxi service. “I would say that road tax done is bear foolishness for the average taxi person and the persons who doing shovelling and those sort of things. It is going to be an expense to those persons. Also, persons who doing freighting it is going to be an expense to those persons,” Tony said, while suggesting that the cost of living would increase significantly. “Automatically the cost of living will go up because businesses that used to do freighting and so on will put on a charge for that. So automatically you are saying it is an expense to them. So they are going to be saying ‘it is an expense to us, so we have to get back our money’. I think they have to reconsider that,” he said, adding that the incumbent Democratic Labour Party had already imposed taxes on petroleum products. “Right now this present Government has put tax on it so I guess if that is the way they got to go, that is the way that they have to go. But if you say that you are going to finish with road tax and put it towards gas it is a no-no. It is not a good thing at all and I think they need to rethink that.” (BT)
ANGLICAN CHURCH STILL DIVIDED OVER NEW BISHOP – After two sittings separated by19 days and 16 hours of voting, the Anglican Church here is no closer to electing a bishop to lead the Barbadian flock. The House of Clergy and the House of Laity aborted yet another attempt today, having failed to reach consensus after six hours of voting. They ended today in the same position as they did on April 25 after ten hours of voting and four ballots at the Ivan Harewood Centre of the Christ Church Parish Church to choose a successor to the retired John Holder. As it did back then, the laity continued to throw its support behind youthful candidate Rev John Rogers, 45, rector of St George Parish Church, while the clergy backed his senior, Dr Jeffrey Gibson, 61, dean of The Cathedral of St Michael’s and All Angels. When it was clear that they could not break the deadlock, Diocesan Administrator Canon Wayne Isaacs, who chaired the proceedings, outlined the four options – to continue voting today, invite further nominations, refer the voting to a selection committee or adjourn until a date to be determined. The group chose the latter, however Isaacs made it clear if the two houses remained divided for much longer, the Anglican Synod would have to decide. “We have up to August to select [a bishop]. If in six months time we don’t select, we would go to the House of Bishops. The other option is to send it to a select committee and they would have a longer time . . . 12 months [to decide],” he explained. In order to be elected bishop, the winner must secure 53 votes from the laity and 55 from the clergy. While Rogers secured 54 laity votes at the end of the first ballot today, compared to 24 for Gibson, he fell way short of receiving the required two-thirds of the clergy votes, polling 33 to 49 by Gibson. The youthful Rogers lost one clergy vote in the second ballot, which went to Gibson, but kept his 54 laity votes, although Gibson added two more. The results for the third ballot were not available up to the time of publication. Asked to comment on suggestions that the Anglican Church now stands seriously divided by failing to find consensus for a second time, Isaacs said: “I suspect people might think so, but we have to allow the process to run its course. I know people would not be happy but, you know…” Among the House of Clergy were a number of retired priests, well advanced in age, including one in his 90s, and some of whom were physically disabled, including a blind cleric. Also showing up to vote was former Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave, who needed help walking. (BT)
EBC FINALLY REGISTERS ST LUCIAN ACADEMIC – St Lucian professor Eddy Ventose and three other Commonwealth citizens who had sued the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) for refusing to include their names on the electoral list, have finally registered to vote in the May 24 general election in Barbados. Chief Electoral Officer Angela Taylor was ordered yesterday by the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) to ensure that Ventose, the principal applicant in the class action suit, was registered before noon today or risk imprisonment and/or fines. “All of the litigants in the matter have been registered and have received confirmation that they are on the voters’ list,” attorney Gregory Nicholls, who is part of the legal team representing the litigants, told Barbados TODAY this afternoon. Nicholls said since the lawsuit was filed, a number of Commonwealth citizens had contacted the legal team advising that they had registered but their names did not appear on the voters’ list, adding that he was not certain about their fate. “It doesn’t appear as though that the other Commonwealth citizens who would have registered during the special registration period have been put on the list. So that I am not certain what would be the issue or how the issue would be resolved tomorrow, because once the list is published, they are not going to be able to vote. The electoral department would therefore have to explain why people who have applied during the special registration period and who otherwise qualified were not put on the list,” he added. The attorney said this case had no implications for Barbadians and other Commonwealth citizens living in other Commonwealth countries since “Barbadians all over the world who are in other Commonwealth countries vote ordinarily without any hiccup at all”. “It seem that the electoral department was being advised by people who are ignorant as to the basis for which the Commonwealth as a grouping of nations gave that right to each others’ citizens who are resident for a qualifying period of time in another country of the Commonwealth,” Nicholls pointed out. The legal counsel said it was as a result of that ignorance that the EBC had taken the law into its own hands and decided not to register citizens from other Commonwealth countries. “That is really, really regrettable because . . . I can tell you, I registered when I was in Trinidad and Tobago as a student. I know a lot of students who are currently in the UK and Canada since we started this case who indicated that the mere fact that they are studying overseas in a Commonwealth country, allowed them to register in Canada and the UK, and that has always been the case,” he stressed. In handing down its judgment yesterday, the CCJ declared in the ruling read by President Sir Dennis Byron, that it was satisfied the legal and regulatory conditions for Ventose’s registration had been met. Ventose had stated that he was qualified and entitled to be registered to vote, but his registration was consistently refused. The Court of Appeal here had, on Tuesday May 8, 2018, ruled that the professor of administrative law at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies was qualified to be registered to vote. However, it stopped short of compelling the EBC to place him on the register of voters, instead giving the Chief Electoral Officer 24 hours to make a determination on his application. When the EBC again failed to register Ventose, he took the matter to the CCJ, which said its decision should also resolve the matter for other Commonwealth citizens resident in Barbados for the relevant qualifying period, who are also claiming a right to be registered as voters under the Barbados law. “The longstanding policy of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission in relation to Commonwealth citizens to register as electors only those persons who are Barbadian citizens, permanent residents or holders of immigrant status is unlawful and ultra vires,” Sir Byron declared in the judgment. It was in February that Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson ruled that Commonwealth citizens who meet the requirements under the Representation of the People Act had a right to vote here. He had said that any decision to exclude the four Commonwealth citizens would be in violation of the Act, which does not make it mandatory for the applicants to be permanent residents, immigrants or citizens of Barbados in order to vote. “Only the Parliament of Barbados has the power to insert those conditions,” Sir Marston said then, while explaining that the only requirements needed for a Commonwealth citizen to vote in Barbados was for that person to be a resident here for three years, and living in the constituency in which they are desirous of voting for three months.” When contacted Brian Barrow, who is an attorney and an EBC commissioner, said he had no comment to make on the CCJ ruling. MAN DENIES BEATING WOMAN OVER DLP POSTER – He admitted to beating the mother of his two young children, but Jamal Terry Blackman denied he did so because she read a Democratic Labour Party poster. Blackman, 24, of Colleton, St Lucy, pleaded guilty in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today to assaulting Chevianne Pitt-Seale on May 12, 2018. And while he said he was under the influence of alcohol, Blackman said the incident occurred following an argument about her ex-boyfriend. Earlier, prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons in giving the facts, said the couple went out to a bus crawl where they both consumed alcoholic beverages. When it was finished they got a ride to Eagle Hall and decided to walk home from there. As they approached Carrington Village, the complainant read aloud the slogan from a DLP poster, causing Blackman to get angry. On reaching home she fell asleep, but was awoken by a blow to the body. When she looked up she saw Blackman over her. At that point, he reportedly began to hit her across her face and choke her. Her mother heard the commotion and intervened, separating the two. An enraged Blackman then told her, “You are going to dead in here tonight”, before grabbing her throat again. During that struggle he also bit her above the right eye, the right ear, upper back and right hand. In offering an apology, Blackman said the commotion started after he questioned her about rumours surrounding her former boyfriend. He said he had no recollection of her reading a DLP poster. “I apologize for my actions. I was very upset,” he said. There was no objection to bail for the first-time offender and the magistrate granted him $3,000 bail. As part of his conditions he has to stay away from the complainant. “Stay away from the drinks because it obviously impairs your memory and your judgement,” Cuffy-Sargeant told him. He returns to court on Friday. (BT)
PHILLIPS SENTENCED TO COMMUNITY SERVICE – After being held with cannabis, Dane Raheem Phillips pleaded with the arresting officer to give him a chance. And while that officer didn’t prove to be very forgiving, Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant extended an olive branch to the first-time offender today. When he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today, the 22-year-old, of #744, Kingsland Terrace, Christ Church, was sentenced to 120 hours of community service after admitting to having the illegal drug in his possession on Sunday. Police prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons had earlier told the court that lawmen were patrolling Bibbys Lane when they had reason to stop and search the accused. When they searched his right front pants pocket they found 28 transparent Ziplock bags which contained vegetable matter. “I does smoke. Give me a chance,” was his response when asked to give an account of the drugs. After he apologized to the court and begged for leniency, Cuffy-Sergeant chose not to fine or incarcerate him. She gave him until October 12 to complete the community service. (BT)
ONWARD MARCH – Former three-time kings Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme continued to take charge of zone two with yet another comfortable victory last night, this time 2-0 over University of the West Indies Blackbirds in the Barbados Football Association’s Premier League. The soldiers attacked with two early goals in the opening half when the league continued at the BFA’s Wildey, St Michael AstroTurf. UWI never looked settled and BDFSP took advantage breaking down their defence barriers and grabbing hold of any opportunity that presented itself. The rain certainly did play its part, but the diminutive Omani Leacock did not fail to score under wet conditions for BDFSP. That goal resulted from a combination of two right flank passes that found striker Leacock for the finishing touch in the 14th minute from the six-yard box. Coach Asquith Howell was clearly pleased with those delightful passes and it did not take long for his men to secure goal number two as UWI’s defensive third was found napping yet again and allowed an unmarked T-Shane Lorde to hammer home a shot from inside the 18-yard box. University’s defence led by the experience Tito Beckles was all over the place and just couldn’t control the set plays by the BDFSP. They did not only struggle on defence but also found the going tough on offence even with their ace marksman Mario Harte giving it his all upfront. Harte kept national defenders Shane Codrington and Ranaldo Bailey busy and even at times came up against national attacking midfielder Rashad Jules in what was an exciting battle between the two former teammates when Harte previously captained BDFSP and the senior national team. (BT)
TULL, SIMMS ARE TOP NINJAS – Homeboy Levar Tull emerged as the champion of the Barbados Ninja Throw Down in a time of three minutes and seven seconds when the competition now in its third year was held at Featherbed Lane, St George over the weekend. Competing for the very first time, it was sheer skills, agility and determination that led the 36-year-old Tull being crowned king of the ninja showdown having conquered several obstacles to claim the BDS$3, 000 cash prize. The one-day event which was rain-affected on Saturday evening ended up being a two-day affair when organizer Delano Hinds was forced to postpone the competition until Sunday morning when a modest crowd returned to witness who the eventual winner would be. Tull was able to defy several obstacles to complete the course and in so doing dethroned last year’s champion Lee Knight who was third this time around in three minutes and 47 seconds while Darren Perez’ three minutes and 13 seconds earned him the silver. Speaking with media after his performance, Tull who is not associated with any gym but utilizes his uncle’s backyard to train said he was determined to finish the course no matter what. “My aim was just to make it to the end and the fact that I did claim the fastest time is a bonus. I had practice on evenings, had a couple of walkthroughs, we still had gym sessions, so it was a lot of hard work. The course was fantastic, a lot of fun, all the obstacles are not made to beat you but challenge you. So, I found that everything was well put together,” Tull said. The obstacles included Morgan Lewis Wheels, Ragged Point Teeter Tot, Cattlewash Stepping Stones, Walaba Log Posts, Green Monkey Bars 2.0, Garrison Spider Wall, Joe River Jump, Hackletons Cliff Net Climb, River Bay Log Roll, Pico Tenerife Peg Board, Charles Fort Cannon Balls and Mount Hillaby. This year attracted quite a few overseas participants and in the adult female section, Grace Simms from South Carolina won the women’s clash clocking three minutes and 50 seconds despite not completing the course but proceeded a lot further than her rivals and ended at the Ragged Point Teeter Tot obstacle. In fact, the top three finishers in the women’s failed to finish the course as Natalie Duran stopped at the Ragged Point Teeter Tot in three minutes and 33 seconds for second place. Charity Lebanc made it as far as the River Bay Log Roll in two minutes and 38 seconds for the third position. The 31-year old Simms has been competing at Ninja events for the past four years but felt ecstatic to compete for the very first time in Barbados and win. “I thought it was a really fun course, I went too slow, so, unfortunately, I did not get to go as far as I would have liked but next time I would try to pick up the speed and do a few more obstacles. But I am excited to win, I mean it could have been anyone of us girls to win because we all did amazingly, some of the other girls were way faster than me and just happened to slip up, so I got lucky basically,” she said. When asked to give her views about the course and participating, Simms explained: “I was extremely worried about falling, so I really took my time and went super slow which slowed my time down. All this stuff you had to hang from I felt good about because I am a rock climber. My husband and I are building a gym in South Carolina right now because the closest one to us is three hours away, so we are excited to build the gym. It is going to be called Motive School of Movement and then we would be able to train a lot more.” The younger ninjas were also in action and in the males 13 to 17 age group, Tyriek Knight won in three minutes 20 seconds, followed by Nathan Clinton in three minutes ten seconds and Christopher Hayward, one minute and 32 seconds. In the 13 to 17 for females, Saffire Fields won in 39 seconds as she did not get past the first ragged point teeter tot. In the boys eight to 12, Slade Jones had the winning time of a minute and 58 seconds, Jaden Johnson three minutes 43 seconds was second and Charlie Durant finished in three minutes and 43 seconds for third. Charlee Collins’ four minutes and three seconds topped the girls’ eight to 12 age group, Jaleesa Gaynes was second in five minutes and 14 seconds and Hannah Toppin was third in five minutes and 39 seconds. (BT)
