Acting huffing and tsundere like lays down on the bed and lets you cuddle up to him, even covering you with his blankets without worrying much about hair sticking to it.

Every so often he texts things to Thoma ‘the cat is hungry, get them fish ‘jin, canned tuna isn't good for cats.’ ‘There's sushi tuna in the kitchen. Hurry’

The most spoiled cat for the day or so that you turned, ribbons as your collar so nobody mistakes you for a worker cat, cooked meat every meal, hair brushed every night -by thoma- and sleeping under many imported silk blankets.

There was a cat sleeping on Bonnie's seat and, somehow, she wasn't thrashing around for it to get out, quite opposite she seemed to be seeking out sunlight for you. It isn't until he gets closer and you wake up that he recognizes your eyes in the kitty's that he guessed it's you.

He is knocking down on Hyde's office asking about what happened to you and how long it's going to last, Hyde grabs you by the armpits and twists you around before throwing you back to Sho unworried and he guesstimates about a day or two.

He doesn't allow you inside his food truck because he respects food hygiene but you can sleep on the outside tables acting like a mascot, at first Subaru was quite open to touching you in this form until he saw your memories and figured it was you.

He now feeds two mouths, Bonnie and you, sorry Leo, your noodles will have to wait until he finishes the pulled pork bbq sandwich for Bonnie and your cat-friendly oil-free stir fry, die mad about it.

After one of the vagastorm students grabbed you to get you out of a spot on the couch and Sho dared him to meet him at the pit for that, after that nobody really touched you.

Yuri and Jiro

Some general students got called after the accident in class to check out the students who were well except a few scratches, they were called later when the students brought a cat claiming that it was the prefect.

Neither are very worried as it happened before but more interested in how similar your labwork would be to your human one so Yuri is drawing blood, doing ultrasounds to see if everything looks normal or similar to before (if you struggle to much because you are nervous or fear needles and try to scratch him he will make Jiro hold you as you claw at him. At least he doesn't hold it against you when you return to normal)

After that you can hang around mortkraken with a little note stuck on your fur saying ‘dr isami’s patient, do not feed’

If Yuri is sitting down while writing or reading your test he allows you to lay on his lap and maybe he will rub your belly.

Why You Should Watch Bang Brave Bang Bravern

An essay by Junipei while they wait for they friends to come online so we can watch episode 3. Some spoilers for episode 1-2 I guess

Reason 1 - It be Nefarious

Ok so let me tell you how I came to actually watch this show. I have a friend who does one of those seasonal anime review podcast things and I was basically helping man go through the bottom of the barrel. Things that were either going to be cute for an episode before its gimmick ran into the ground or just straight up trash. I was the emotional support Juni.

So we boot up Bang Brave Bang Bravern knowing only that it's a generic mecha show with a fucked up name and a bromance thrown in for fun. That's what we thought

THAT'S WHAT WE THOUGHT

We thought things were getting interesting when the aliens showed up. Ok it's not just a gritty anime it's a Pacific Rim Top Gun thing, ok, that's more interesting than what we thought, that's fine.

AND THEN BRAVERN SHOWS UP.

AND WE REALISE THIS ISN'T JUST A GRITTY REALISTIC MECHA. IT GOT COLLIDED WITH A FUCKIN SUPER ROBOT SHOW FROM THE 70s.

I have not had my jaw this dropped since episode 1 of Code Geass. We were played like fiddles bro.

So we watch episode 2, wondering where the hell its going to go from there. IT GOES TO-

Reason 2 - Robot Gay Hell

As a person who enjoys human sized people kissing 10ft tall death machines, I have been starved my entire life. I take what I can get.

So imagine my surprise when the show sets up that Bravern is head over heels in love with his pilot Isami. So much so that he refuses to let anyone else get in that cockpit. Wahey!

It has mostly been played for a joke, that's the one single downside. That's not very sustainable. BUT I am very curious to see where it goes. This leads into-

Reason 3 - Something is UP my Dudes

If the carefully planned bait and switch says anything, it's that the show has a lot more planned up it sleeve. And you see that in allmost every scene. Bravern and the one-dimensional aliens creates a massive tonal dissonance with the original part of the show.

You see, the realistic gritty mecha bit is still playing out like a realistic gritty mecha. Our boy Isami gets waterboarded by the CIA for any info he has on Bravern. Things don't magically get better after Bravern saves the main cast, the Earth is going to shit real fast.

So if you think of Bravern and the aliens in the context of the more realistic part of the show, shit is mighty sus. Are you really going to take man's word that he's a hero here to defeat the bad guys?

It could turn darker, it could turn spicy, or it could sustain the show past the "gimmick turns stale real quick" problem anime has these days.

Ah, the great Yuri! Doctor of the future and mastermind behind the cure to all curses. Anyone would be lucky to get the chance to catch his eye and make him fall head over heels.

But the reality of that is far better than you would actually imagine. Because if you’ve managed to get Yuri to fall for you, you’re going to get the change to see him completely loose his composure.

As soon as he sees you balancing out his flaws, he gets a swooping feeling in his stomach that he knows could only be something as scientifically irrational as love.

He’s going to be a mess moving forward, constantly bouncing between flaunting himself in front of you and turning into a blushing mess when you make any kind of actual move.

Just take it easy with him. He’ll work himself around to actually courting you one of these days.

I feel like Jiro could go either way. He’s either going to be completely oblivious to his feelings or completely aware of them.

I think he would first notice them when you’re arguing with Yuri about how he treats Jiro. Something about you standing up for him really hits home in a way he’s not used to.

Once it does click that he cares about you in a way that’s not how he cares about others, he’s not really going to act that different.

If you’re interested in him, you’ll only find it strange and off-putting if he changes how he’s acting towards you. Keeping things neutral is the best plan forward in his mind.

The only thing that may change is he’s going to tease you more. He’s got to get some of those cute reactions out of you after all…

Lewis Smith should have everything he ever wants. he took the trauma of losing his parents as a kid, and his childhood special interest, and coalesced them in his personality to become a man who only wants to help.

he saved Isami from getting waterboarded. he tried to hide Lulu from the military because he knew they'd try to do the same to her, and he never contested that she was his responsibility after that. of course he would... she's a child in need.

he specifically doesn't want to get left behind while "the hero" goes off on their own and dies where he can't help them. so he fights Isami, to prove that he's strong enough to support him. he tells Isami that people will care if he dies, and he can't just shut everyone out, and try to shoulder this alone. and of course he'd say that... he recognizes the symptoms of stoic, self sacrificial heroism.

he never felt bitter about Isami being chosen as Bravern's pilot. I know a lot of us read his dwelling on Bravern rejecting him as forlorn pining or something, but it's more like... he knows there's a global crisis going on, and Isami was a mess after Lewis got him out of that horrible waterboarding session, and Lewis would really like to have the tools to do something. specifically, Bravern is exactly the type of hero that he used to derive such comfort from. of course he'd want to provide something like that to anyone who's sad or scared.

but very importantly: Lewis never felt bitter because he never saw Isami as undeserving. Lewis never had thoughts about how Isami couldn't do it as well as he could do it himself. Lewis instead views himself as the guy who needs to keep up. if he can't, then something might go wrong when he can't be there. Isami might find himself in danger, and alone. of course he'd never let something like that happen.

when Kunuth chooses to fixate on Lewis, it's because he has undisclosed feelings. feelings that could actually be selfish, if he let them. he wants to be special to Isami, but this whole time he's been trying to earn it. and now he's become "the hero" in the one way he never ever wanted to be. he's become the kind of hero that leaves his loved ones behind and never returns. of course he'd never accept it.

becoming Bravern allows Lewis to shine in ways he always wanted to, but never thought he could. his theme song, his attack names, his logo, his upgrades... the way he presents himself as someone you can always come and talk to... he even tries to give his enemies a chance to talk, and hears them out, because he's that type of saturday morning cartoon hero. he wants to help. he wants to comfort people, and tell them that everything will be okay. he's Bravern. of course he'd do this.

and he finally gets to tell Isami that he loves him... but only after Isami chooses him back. he tells Superbia to live, because of course he'd do that. that's everything he's ever wanted to tell anyone he cares for at all. and when he seems like he's going to die for real, it takes the kind of hero that he's always believed Isami could be, to bring him back for real. Isami chose to want him, love him, and save him. and having the power to do that is the absolute best, isn't it? Lewis always thought so. and he's always ended up casting Isami in the role that he would've wanted, and then tried his very best to support that. it's no surprise that this worked.

Spoilery Bravern thoughts:

As much as a lot of fans called what happened in episode 9 a while back, having it confirmed, and having why and how it happened confirmed, adds so much really sweet and sad context.

Like, a lot of Bravern's behavior is clearly just Lewis being able to be yuusha on main and being too big and powerful for anyone to be able to mock him about it. If I died brutally in an explosion and was reincarnated as a robot I'd be acting pretty much exactly the same. (Same goes for crushing on Isami on main tbh.)

But like. Other things. Like the fact that Bravern took Isami out to the bar and made sure he knew how loved he was by his peers. The fact that he pushed Isami to build a social group is already very sweet and good, but then couple that with the fact that he knew he (as Lewis) didn't have long left and was ensuring Isami knew he had a support system.

The fact that Bravern is so adamant about how Isami fights, in equal parts exposing him to that same influence that made Lewis want to be a hero and tempering his reactions in combat. Bravern is training Isami to be the hero he wouldn't live to be. Lewis is training Isami to go on without him.

And I'm just. Like.

I don't know if anyone has translated this but I haven't seen any and where I found this it wasn't translated so I thought I'd translate the bit about what Isami and Smith would do if they received a love confession at graduation. Sorry if it's already been translated lol.

The question is answered by Suzuki (Isami's voice actor) and Azakami(Smith's voice actor).

Q: If they received a love confession at graduation, how would Isami and Smith react?

Suzuki: Since we've seen Isami not react even though he's surrounded by cute girls like Hibiki, Miyu, and Honoka, I think that even if Isami were to get a love confession from someone he would just say "Thank you" and then do nothing after that... that's all I can picture.

Azakami: I don't think he would realize that saying "Thank you" would equal "let's date" either (lol). This is just my opinion but I think that Isami has zero experience with love.

While Smith is super forward, I don't think he would be that forward when it comes to love. I think even if he was confessed to he would say something like "rather than that, why don't we go to a party" and use that as a smart way to turn them down.

Suzuki: That's true, Smith does give off the feeling that he won't take that final step towards being lovers.

Azakami: It's just my opinion but I feel like, surprisingly, Smith might also have very little experience with love.

In Japanese it's somewhat more apparent that he's about to call you 'mama' in the voiceline. Maybe it's just my interpretation based on lines 23 and 24, but I think something happened to his mother where he failed to save her with surgery and at higher affinity he begins to project that need to save terminal/cursed patients' lives on you in particular. And he starts to think of you the way he thinks of his mother, but also as his favorite test subject. That or it's a loop/timeline thing and you're actually his mother--do you guys think he'd be able to be convinced into mommy kink shit he clearly has mommy issues it might help

i am once again assuming his mother died on the operating table while he was trying to save or otherwise help her and he's extremely traumatized by it. on the other hand would he say 'goodbye mama' if she weren't still alive? maybe she's alive but she's in a coma or hospice or critical condition or something. and he's studying anomalous medicine to figure out how to save her.

the fact that he wanted to match costumes with jiro is so cute. . .like he really has this goofy side that doesn't come out much, but it seems like he enjoys celebrations and relaxed things, he's just too busy to engage in them. he likes isekai manga and holiday traditions and costumes. . .then again there's coordination and order involved in a matching halloween costume. so maybe he just likes the order and structure of it all.

I REALLY LOVE YURI HE REALLY FEELS SO. . .PATHETIC. he's the self-reinforcing type who really feels the need to hype up his own greatness and reinforce his authority while, as you get closer to him, letting you see how vulnerable he is and how scared he is of failure. and at first you're a specimen and a lab rat but after getting close enough he shoos you away from his experiments and you can even be his assistant(in jiro's absence) instead. . .his profile makes him sound very in control and aggressive but he doesn't really seem that way in his voicelines i guess? and here and there he's goofy and caring. . .he's kind of a loser(affectionate)!

“Knock Knock!” The honor student makes their way into Mortkraken’s lab, much to the displeasure of the man working down there.

“Knock Knock? You intrude on the great Yuri Isami’s work with, Knock Knock?” He puts down his scalpel in a fit.

[Name] nods, “Duty calls from the big man.” They smile holding up a case file. “Put it on the operating table, I’ll get to it in a minute.”

He picks back up his scalpel and starts working on a chunk of anomolous skin in front of him. The honor student does as told then walks over to him, leaning over his shoulder.

“What are you doing?” They ask, which alerts the young scientist to their new way to close position.

He flushes lightly, startled, but plays it as cool as he possibly could. “I’m dissecting this piece of flesh to further inspect its insides! What does it look like? An idiot could have figure that out!”

They laugh, “Sure, whatever you say.”

He forcefully turns his attention back to the anomaly in front of him, “And what do you mean by that?”

“Nothing Yuri, nothing.” The honor student waves him off, walking to the other side of him to get a different view of what he’s doing. “How long have you been at this?” Their eyes motion themselves to the scrap pile of different anomolous skin.

“20 hours. And I expect to be at it for another 10.” He works carefully on the sample, not bothering to look up once more.

[Name] shakes their head and tsks, grabbing his hands and taking the scalpel from him. “Then that’s enough for you.”

He blushes like a mad man, “W-what in the world are you doing, you are interfering with the great Yuri Isami’s work!!!” he tries to grab the scalpel back, but they restrain his hands in theirs. (Not a hard task considering the doctor was rather weak.)

“That’s exactly what I’m trying to do.” They pull him up and wrap their hand in his, “Let’s get you to bed, and then you can worry about the flesh and also the case.”

Yuri grumbles in displeasure, arguing the whole way up to his room, but never fighting the honor student’s touch.

For the rest of the week he would wonder why this was, not realizing a crush was blooming.

Why do I clock the German major general Heidemarie as a lesbian?

So what if “ga-ga-pi” is some kind of a code, similar to Morse code or the binary code? Lulu has her “ga-ga-pi.” The other Deathdrive has its “ga-ga-ga. Pi-ga-ga-ga-pi. Pi-ga-ga-pi-ga.” The sequence is different in order to convey another meaning. The only solution is how to interpret it. Or perhaps, I am just overthinking.

So what are the Death Drives?

From the series’s glossary:

Death Drives : A mysterious mechanical life form that suddenly attacked the earth. Their goal is to achieve the best "death" that each of them wants. They came to this earth around all the galaxies in search of an existence that will fulfil their wishes.

Those drives sound like a part of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis’ theory, the theory of pleasure principle (Lustprinzip).

Did Masami Obari, the director, turn to the Austrian psychoanalyst to gather the blueprint for his latest work?

(I know that Freud doesn’t have many fans among the Tumblr folks. But he “is” my neighbour. After having seen “Freud’s Vanished Neighbors” and read an article that the Viennese didn’t accept him as part of the community because he was not born in Austria and had Jewish family, and was still referred to as “Zugeraster,” a derogatory term for an outsider, he earned my respect and like everyone who was born centuries ago had other mentality that was not at all fitting in the modern era.)

Deathdrives, or death drives, in Freudian psychoanalytical universe, mean Thanatos, Todestrieb in German, is a term that describes: the drive toward death and destruction, often expressed through behaviors such as aggression, repetition compulsion, and self-destructiveness.

From Freud’s book, “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” :

Our departure point was the great antithesis of life drives and death drives. Object-love itself shows us a second such polarity – that of love (affection) and hate (aggression). What if we succeeded in connecting these two polarities, what if we succeeded in tracing one back to the other! We have always acknowledged a sadistic component in the sexual drive; as we know, this component can develop a life of its own and turn into a perversion that dominates a person's entire sexual life. It also occurs as a dominant partial drive in one of those forms of organization of sexual life that I have termed ‘pre-genital’. @whypolar analysed their names, then doing some googling of the meanings of both Isami and Lewis’ names, it seems the two share the same description. Yours truly is not at all a Japanese language expert, this website suggests that Isami has 21 variations in kanji.

勇 means "bravery, courage."

Brave - Showing courage and strength in the face of danger or difficulty.

Daring - Willing to take risks and try new things.

Strong - Having great physical or mental power.

Courageous - Having or showing courage in the face of danger or difficulty.

Resolute - Firmly determined to do something.

Soldier - A person who serves in an army.

It describes Isami’s personality perfectly!

Lewis, on the other hand…

From the celebrated author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll, to lauded actor Daniel-Day Lewis, a boy called Lewis is in good company! Lewis is of German origin and means "Renowned warrior." It has many variations in Latin, French, and Gaelic languages that all point to the same sentiment of “strength” and “courage”. With the name Lewis, you can hope to instill your baby boy with a fearless optimism for life.

All three of them—Bravern, Isami and Lewis—are “strong and courageous.”

Suzuki Ryouta (Isami Ao):

Q: Tell us your impressions of the character you play.

You can tell by watching the first episode that I played him as someone who wordlessly takes on the burden of his superior's orders and crushes his enemies with his own power... a cool and stylish soldier. ...nah he wasn't like that at all, was he? During his first real battle, his hands were shaking and he acted like a coward without any courage, and he was forced to shoulder his fate as the pilot fighting against mysterious enemies that appeared all of a sudden. Fighting alongside Smith and Bravern, sometimes clashing with them, and gradually seeing his heart grow stronger, it felt like I too could have an explosion of courage along with him, making him a very fun character.

Q: Tell us about your favorite episode/scene/quote.

From episode one, the line “What the hell is this song!?!”. In the script I was just supposed to shout “Uaaaaaaah!”, but during voice recording I adlibbed my gut reaction to hearing the song. The director allowed my adlibbed line to be used, so it's a memorable quote to me. I also love the scene from episode eleven, where the four characters have a meal together. It is a mysterious scene where the atmosphere changes into that of a cooking manga (lol).

Q: Was there anything you were particularly conscious of when portraying this character?

I was conscious of expressing Isami as someone who is fundamentally a man of few words, with the austerity of a soldier who feels young yet mature. In the first half, my strong imrpression of him is that he is conflicted after meeting Bravern with how he doesn't want anyone to die but doesn't have the courage to fight. The boxing match with Smith allowed him to let out the weakness he'd been holding inside, and he was able to change his feelings into positive ones where he wants to fight alongside others without pressure. Even when he's conflicted, his comebacks are sharp, he is pretty scary when he gets angry, and he sheds tears when his companions fall... he is a character I portrayed expressing multitudes of human emotions.

Q: A message for fans.

Thank you for watching BBB until the end. In addition to hot blooded mecha fights, there are scenes that make you laugh, a little bit of sexiness, scenes that may make your eyes tear up, all sorts of fun things coming in a high tempo. It might be the kind of work where seeing Isami, who had no courage at all, gain it little by little through his battles, might give viewers that small first step as well. I am glad Bravern gave me the opportunity to play a mecha pilot protagonist for the first time. Thanks to all viewers and regards from here on.

Azakami Youhei (Lewis Smith)

Q: Tell us your impressions of the character you play.

At first we were not given a lot of character details. I attended the audition with a rough description of a “cheerful and macho solider”, but after reading the scripts and seeing his feelings for Isami and his fellow comrades, and how well he takes care of Lulu, he became a character I liked more the more I got to know about him. Almost as if he became like a “hero” to me. I think the comical atmosphere around him draw out his likable qualities. I tried my best to make his [English] pronunciation sound as native as possible. He was earnestly a very fun character to play.

Q: Tell us about your favorite episode/scene/quote

I really like the boxing episode between Isami and Smith. Like “we don't need words to communicate!” - it was a fun part to act with a mix of passionate fists meeting mixed with jokes. I think that's when they truly became friends so it's a part I particularly like. Also, it wasn't in the actual episodes, but in the preview for the first episode, Smith says the line “The wait's over, Isami!”. It is a line that has a bigger impact when you hear it again after knowing everything. Please listen to that line one more time!

Q: Was there anything you were particularly conscious of when portraying this character?

He may give off the strongest impression of being a bright and pleasant person, but his sometimes fragile expressions are memorable. He wants to be a hero, but the hero isn't him. That sense of failure he was carrying might have been the “shadow” side of this story. When recording his lines, more than getting across his “coolness”, I tried to get across the beliefs that were important to him, as well as that sense of being the “shadow”. On one side, he is the polar opposite of the cold Isami, but no matter how bad things make him look he doesn't waver in his own belief in justice. And for him, the “shadow” of failure turns into strength because of his strong convictions. I am happy thinking this power could connect him to becoming Bravern.

Q: A message for fans.

Thank you for supporting this work. This is the kind of story that makes you think “who is the protagonist?”, and people can come to different conclusions. Like Isami, who is forcibly made to be the hero and is dragged onto the stage and shouldered a huge burden without knowing why. Or like Smith who, faced with the reality of not being able to become what he wanted to be, was able to overcome that sense of failure. Or like Hibiki and Miyu who are able to make everyone happy by playing a supporting role. Or like King, who lets his personal feelings aside and becomes the one who makes the hard decisions. From all sorts of protagonist viewpoints, try watching the show thinking what sort of existence Bravern is to all of them.

Suzumura Kenichi (Bravern)

Q: Tell us your impressions of the character you play.

When I saw the design, I thought it was totally Bari-esque (lol). “This is it!” I cried out.

The more you see him face against other characters the more it becomes clear just how out of sync with everyone he is, which is funny, but I was also nervous how hit the subtle balance right each time. I played him like the kind of hero robot character I looked up to as a kid, which made me happy on a personal level. I portrayed him with all the expected qualities of a mecha anime, but being a lifetime otaku helped me a lot. I'm glad I like robots.

Q: Tell us about your favorite episode/scene/quote.

It was fun to put effort into voicing the special attack/fusion scenes. Obari-san has done continuous work on mecha anime, and has many peculiarities about how attack shouts should be voiced to the samllest detail, and recording while receiving those sessions was fun. I also got to voice the the hero character in the tokusatsu show Smith and Lulu were watching! Taking notes on how to voice live action-ish lines once again was very fun. When you know that Bravern was created from Smith's feelings, you can tell that the image of that hero character probably made a deep impression on a part of him.

Q: Was there anything you were particularly conscious of when portraying this character?

When the test recording of the first episode was done, Obari-san called for me and told me: “Bravern's real identity is Smith”. I was the only one who was told this. Because this was kept a secret from the other voice actors, it was hard to keep myself from telling everyone my real feelings (lol). Although I was cast through an audition, knowing this changed the entire plan of portraying the character. The way he interacts with Isami, the way he says his special attacks, how he uses his new powers... instead of voicing these lines in a straightforward manner, I played him as if it was actually Smith acting as a hero. After the reveal of his identity happens in the second half if the series, I played him as if he becomes stronger and more confidently hero-like.

Q: A message for fans.

This is a work you can enjoy from many different viewpoints. For a mecha-otaku like me it doesn't betray your expectations, and people who have never seen a mecha anime before can laugh and cry. It is a work full of elements that people can enjoy. There are lots of characters with their own charms, so I think everyone will find a favorite. If you watch the entire show from the beginning after the ending, you will be able to notice how everything was laid out! Please watch it around 100 times (lol).

Aizawa Saya (Lulu)

Q: Tell us your impressions of the character you play.

I took this role as a challenge, and she was a character who gave me a lot of challenges. I want people to understand her passionate courage by watching her introduction scene again after the last episode,

Q: Tell us about your favorite episode/scene/quote.

I like her relationship with Superbia. From their backstory, where he accepts her determination, to their present, where their feelings align and they take off together. Their gapigapi arguing was a good memory. And as an actor, getting to be a mecha pilot is a great treasure.

Q: Was there anything you were particularly conscious of when portraying this character?

In the beginning, she didn't even understand what language was and she didn't have a developed tongue. I payed attention to which words in the script would be difficult to pronunce. The subtle line of her not being able to communicate properly and words still having to be audible to viewers had to be tread carefully. Her state of growth from episode to episode was carefully maintained by consulting with Obari-san.

Sugita Tomokazu (Superbia)

Q: Tell us your impressions of the character you play.

The word “bonds” can easily become trite when thrown around easily, but I felt that to Superbia, his bonds with others are precious to him. As comrades in arms, as ojisama, the future that comes forth must be bright.

Q: Tell us about your favorite episode/scene/quote.

I loved hearing so many good voices. The voice actors Obari-san chooses for this works never let you down, I thought. And it was exactly as I expected. Every episode my ears and heart were happy.

Q: Was there anything you were particularly conscious of when portraying this character?

The pronunciation of “Lulu”. The “Oh, has something changed here?” should be immediately obvious.

Brave! Bang! Shake hands with Superbia in his new form that's probably gonna come out! It's gonna be come out, right?

So Superbia is back and that is genuinely fascinating because he might give us more hints as to where Bravern and deathdrives come from.

Something that really stood out to me was the fact that before Superbia could speak Japanese, he was clearly trying to communicate in his original language. Isn't it strange how Bravern doesn't understand this language? How does he know Superbia's name then? I legit believed Bravern knew because Superbia told him during their fight in Hawaii. But I guess that wasn't the case???

Its also strange how Bravern isn't baffled by Superbia's return, almost like he expected him to come back after exploding. Like how do I put this? Ok so clearly, this isn't the same Superbia as the one Isami and Bravern defeated. He must have been rebuilt. Whether or not he has the same memories isn't clear since Superbia doesn't seem to know Bravern. Or maybe he does but because of the language barrier he didn't understand Bravern's fancy introduction. Regardless, there is a possibility that Braven doesn't know everything about deathdrives.

My biggest questions right now are: Is there a chance to bring Superbia to their side? Does Superbia only want Lulu because she makes him stronger? Or does he have a similar attachment to Lulu as Bravern does to Isami? Because if its the latter I could definitely see Superbia joining their side if its the only way he can protect Lulu. Cause let's face it, ain't no way that girl is leaving her dad's(yup thats Smith) side willingly. Personally, I hope Superbia joins the team just to see him and Bravern talk more. I'd love to watch two giant robots bicker over dumb shit while Isami losses his mind lol.

Also, I love Smith dude. This isn't American bias or anything. (Especially given what my country's leaders are doing right now but let's not get into it). When Smith is positive its so infectious and I think him and I are on the same wavelength. There is this moment when him, Isami, and Bravern are flying over to Japan and Bravern says one of his wacky phrases followed by an awkward silence. I literally, out LOWD, say "Ookay". And right after that Smith says "Ookay" in the EXACT same way and I started wheezing dude. 💀

Ok ok that's enough rambling lol. Now to wait another week for (hopefully) some answers.

For once I gotta say, the English in this hasn't been as painful as some other animes I've seen. Both Smith and the Major have been pretty alright. (What I'm saying is that I'm not cringing as much when a primary English speaking character doesn't pronounce English words right.)

—be prepared for him to change your entire wardrobe and skincare routine. He loves to take you shopping and pick out clothes for you like your his personal little doll.

—He’s very critical of very odd things, and he’s gonna complain about all of it to you. Like the uv index of the day. The weird shirt taiga was wearing. When he was given an unaesthetic meal at a restaurant. Or if they’re out of his favorite sparkling wine at the bar. All of that, he comes straight to you.

—he does expect you call him pretty and compliment him constantly

—gives you lots of kisses on your hand (he says he would give a kiss on your cheek but he doesn’t want to make you break out)

—he’ll constantly invite you to his office, just to hang out. But if anyone interrupts they will be shot at.

—he gets very pouty if you give your attention to anyone else, he claims he’s not jealous though. (He very much is.)

Yuri Isami

—he’s so busy. Please force him to rest a little more….

For some reason I just love writing about Okita a lot. This is a one shot this time. Okita x reader again..

Synopsis: AU universe where you treated Okita’s illness as one of the best doctor’s in Kyoto and slowly grew attached to him.

TW: kind of angst but mostly fluff.

The moment you were summoned by the leader of the Shinsengumi to check on someone’s condition, you knew you couldn’t decline the man known as Kondo Isami. He was well respected and so were his men. All you were known for was being one of the best doctors in Kyoto. You studied all sorts of medicine and healing practices.

A few days after the ikedaya incident, a young boy in his early twenties laid in his bed panting heavily. Upon finding out what his name was: Okita Souji. He was the first division captain and former chief assistant of the mibu rishigumi. You heard of the incident that lead many dead from Chousou and Tosa clans. The political chaos between the factions broke out leading many ronin began assassinating each other.

As you made your way to the Shinsegumi base holding your supplies in your bag. Many of the members were already gone on their patrols. “Oh you must be the doctor,” Kondo greeted you at the entrance as you smiled and nodded. Truth be told, you were young and talented in your field. You were quite surprised your name travelled through most of Kyoto reaching the ears of the Shinsengumi to summon you.

Okita at first was very reluctant with your help. He kept telling you that he was fine and to go away. You noticed that when he coughs and struggled to sit up, you had requested to examine his chest area with your stethoscope with a soft smile. He couldn’t figure out why someone like you kept persisting on helping him.

Overtime you kept checking on him and started to give him the necessities to treat the bacteria in his lungs. Okita started to open up to you about his life and how he became a samurai with his friends which put a smile on your face. He was very kind to you when he slowly starts to trust you’re not trying to kill him or anything. You were feeling sorry for him and his condition since you knew he wanted to help protect those close to him, but was stuck in bed for months. He talked about Kondo-san a lot so you had an idea that was his closest person to him.

“It seems that you’re recovering faster than I thought. I guess the fresh mint has been working well with your lungs. Your respiratory tract seems to be almost clear.” You had sat next to him while wondering what he was going to do next. You only had known him for about a month which didn’t feel long.

Okita was smiling and was going to say something before Kondo walked in with free tea. “You’re looking a lot better,” he noticed Souji was moving more freely thanks to your help. You couldn’t help but giggle at their interaction. The young boy was happy to be able to get back and fight for Kyoto. It was risky trying to get involved with any ronin or samurai since the risk of dying is high. You couldn’t help but feel slight attachment grow but you pushed the thought away. Kondo noticed your mind was in a different world and asked if you were alright.

“Oh yes! I’m fine. I’m thinking I should be getting back soon.” You stood up but you couldn’t help but noticed the slight frown on Okita’s features. You saw a few other Shinsengumi members in the hallway spying in on the conversation and wanted to celebrate with Souji for his recovery. You quickly slip through the door as they all seemed busy and left their base.

You had wondered what it was like being a samurai and feeling respected by the townsmen. There was a lot of trouble with Chousou domain and their affiliation with Satsuma domain as well. Maybe it was best to forget about it all and move along like you’re used to; going into peoples homes and treating civilians was mostly your job. You got some money but mostly you prefer their hospitality over the money since your family was already wealthy.

As you almost made it back to your house near the Kamo river which was relatively close to Yagitei where the Shinsegumi’s headquarters were located. You heard someone behind yell for you to wait up. You were confused hearing your name being called out, till you saw it was Okita catching up to you. “You didn’t say you were leaving for good,” Okita stopped in front of you giving you a rather sad look.

“Kondo-san said you weren’t coming back,” Okita fell silent leaving you to feel solemn.

“Okita-san, you don’t need me anymore, it seems that my job is done and I’m happy that you’re all better. So, please, don’t push yourself hard and I’ll be ready to help you or anyone else that needs me again.” You gave him a gleeful smile but it wasn’t enough for him to whine and to see you again.

“Awww, how about I come see you when we’re both free? I don’t like the idea of never seeing you again.” The last phrase had him puffing his cheeks a bit making him look cute how stubborn he was. He didn’t want to let you go? You thought over it but nodded, you would love to get to know him better even if there’s risks in getting close to him.

“Okay, than it’s settled. I’ll see you around, Okita-san.” Little did you know this was just the beginning of your new profound friendship that would blossom to something anew and future with him.

Sometimes Lewis wants to be pretty.

He’s not sure how to explain it, really. He’s grown up in a military world, one that wasn’t always forgiving of people who didn’t fit the right image. He’s been raised in a world that told him he was supposed to look a certain way. “Like a man.” That’s what his drill sergeant had said.

It’s a few months out of basic training that Lewis started waxing all of his body hair. At first, it’s an act of rebellion, spurred by all the annoying quips of the commanding officers about being “manly.” Lewis felt he was perfectly manly. He’s a man, isn’t he? He’s met the qualifications on that alone. So it’s not like taking his chest hair out of the equation changed anything. It would grow back.

Except upon leaving the salon, smooth legs rubbing about the rough fabric of his cargo pants, he decided he kind of liked himself better this way.

When he got home, he stared into the mirror for a while, looking at smooth skin still a bit pink from the wax and running his hands over it. His skin felt softer. He felt more comfortable.

Pretty.

So, Lewis just started doing it all the time. After a while, he added a good moisturizing routine to the mix. It made his skin softer and brighter, and that made him smile. He liked being able to go home after work, muscles aching and body sweaty, and take a good shower, put on a face mask, and rub some lotion on himself. It’s relaxing. His private time. A time when he’s not going to be called handsome or sexy or hot, where no one is going to joke about how they can’t believe he even has a separate face wash because “all guys just use that 10-in-1 soap, shampoo, and drain unclogger, right?” This is his time. And in his time, he gets to think.

I feel pretty.

As time went on, Lewis didn’t think about it much more than that. On deployments, he can’t be picky. He’s a Marine, so pretty is never the first thing they think when they see him. It’s not even the tenth or the hundredth. It doesn’t really bother him or anything. It’s just how it is.

Then he met Isami, and for the first time, he wanted someone else to look at him and see pretty.

But he let go of that pretty quickly, too. Isami didn’t need pretty. He needed strong and sturdy. And Lewis knew those things weren’t mutually exclusive, but to so many people, they are.

And most importantly, he doesn’t want to make things about himself when Isami needs him.

Especially once he’s come back again, and Isami’s so relieved to see him. In that moment, Lewis decided he’d be whatever Isami wanted. Isami can see him however he wants.

Then they’re living together with Lulu. Lewis locks himself in the bathroom with a self waxing kit because there’s something embarrassing about going to see someone about it when it’s not really a necessity, and he bites down on a sponge to muffle the noise as he works. He waits until Isami goes to bed to moisturize, because he doesn’t want to bore Isami with his silly routine. If Isami notices any of it, he doesn’t say anything.

As things slowly return to normal and Lulu is going to school for the first time, Lewis takes her shopping for new clothes. Isami’s elsewhere in the store, not much for fashion, so Lewis and Lulu take their time looking through the racks. Everything Lulu picks is full of color and has fluttering elements, perfect for twirling and jumping. It’s cute. She’s a free spirit, and Lewis loves that.

As she’s trying things on, Lewis chances a look at other clothes. Ones in his size. Cozy oversized sweaters. Cute rompers. Pencil skirts and blouses and casual dresses. They’re so colorful. They have nice shape. Lewis wonders.

Would I be pretty in any of these?

“Oh, Mama! That one!”

It’s funny how kids seem to just know things. Lewis turns to look at Lulu and smiles.

“That one won’t fit you, sunshine.” Lewis says with a chuckle.

“Not for Lulu, for Mama!”

“We’re not shopping for Mama, silly! We’re shopping for Lulu.”

Lulu takes the dress off of the rack and thrusts it at Lewis. Lewis takes it, his fingers pinching the fabric and rolling it. It’s a nice dress. Navy blue and dotted with sunflowers. Sleeveless. Button up. Pockets. The skirt would swish around the wearer’s legs beautifully. Lulu pushes Lewis toward the dressing room.

He’s never been able to say no to her.

“Okay, okay, Mama will try it on. Just for a second!”

He does just that. As he stands in front of the mirror and moves the skirt around, he can’t stop himself from thinking.

I feel pretty.

He figures he should probably show Lulu and steps out of the dressing room. It’s not just Lulu standing there, though.

Isami’s looking at him. His eyes travel up and down Lewis, taking him in. Lewis blushed and starts to open his mouth to defend himself.

“You look pretty. Are you getting that one?” Isami asks.

You look pretty.

“I-I was just trying it on for Lulu! I don’t really need…” Lewis trails off, his hands gripping skirt tightly.

“I need it. I like looking at you in it. Do you want to wear other stuff like that?”

Lewis bites his lip before nodding slowly.

“I have some ideas. Want me to show you?”

“You don’t mind?”

Isami shakes his head. “It suits you. Promise me you’ll start going back to a professional for your waxes, though. Your legs look like they hurt.”

Lewis pulls the skirt to try and cover his legs. “Sorry.”

“You should be. I don’t want you hurting yourself. Come on, I want you to try on some other things.”

Lulu hugs Lewis’ waist and smiles. “You’re pretty, Mama!”

Isami’s lips turn up in a barely noticeable smile. “Yeah. Pretty mama.”

Sometimes, Lewis wants to be pretty. And finally, he can be.
