Hello! Me again! I have a question writing wise.

I was wondering how you try to always keep your characters...well, in character lol. Or rather, how do you keep their personalities the same or nearly the same as in canon. For me, when writing For This is All for My Sunshine, I'm always going to the show or Manga to try and study their characters, but I can't help but feel they still come out as OOC.

So, I'm wondering how you combat this problem?

So, this is an interesting question because I think it’s definitely (in my opinion) one of the biggest challenges that come from writing role-swaps. And it makes sense, as one of the major indicators I think most readers rely on when deciding whether to follow a story is how well certain characters (especially Nezuko) who may not get a lot of development/screen time in canon are portrayed.

After all, Nezuko is her own person, and writing her to be a carbon copy of canon Tanjiro wouldn’t do her character complete justice.

This is definitely something I still struggle with (to the point that sometimes, it’s part of the reason I get so behind on updates lol), but like you mentioned in your questions, one of the first things I do is go to the manga and anime and do some research there. Just read/watch the character I’m studying, see how they interact in certain situations, and just overall see what are the biggest take-aways from their characters altogether.

But something else I do during my “researching” period is read other role-swap and character-focused fics for the characters I want to write for. I like to see how they view the character, and then based on that, I like to add my own headcanons and see what fits best.

I also like to look into tumblrs and authors that like to do posts and fics going into the character. There’s a lot of great demon slayer writers out there, and sometimes they like to post about their thoughts and how they came to them. Or share their favorite headcanons.

Same with TikTok and YouTube, there are definitely some creators that have such an in-depth look into some characters and provide a lot of insight into who they are and what they’re meant to represent in the KNY universe.

Another good source of info on lesser known characters are the handbooks and light novels. They have lots of little details about certain characters that may not have made their way into the manga/anime, especially on stuff about their past and even behaviors growing up. 

I highly recommend checking out the Wiki as well from time to time, as you’ll often find a lot of these details compiled there, along with some information on character personality and fighting styles. 

Finally, I like to focus on one or two major themes/ideas that the character is supposed to have. I may go to the manga or anime and look for supposed important moments/lines they have in the story, and write those down. So it’s something I can reference.

If I find myself particularly stuck, I’ll open up a document and just spend maybe 30 minutes or so just doing research and recording notes about the character there. So when I’m back to writing, I can have that doc open on the side and consult what I have.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to do your take on the character. I don’t think there’s any wrong way to go about portraying Nezuko and other characters, as long as they have something about them that makes them distinctly them.

You’re doing a great job with your fic, so don’t overthink how you write them! And nothing says you can’t go back and revise your work later on if you decide to change something about the character you’re writing.

This is such a complex theory so I’ll probably be updating it in parts.

I'm gonna make a huge compilation from different theories on social media. I took this information from twitter, tiktok and tumblr posts, adding a lot of my own ideas too.

Now, let's start

Skipping all of the information we already know, (The Upside Down has always existed, every person with super powers has a connection with the UD, 011 sent 001 to the UD in 1979)...

....We’re going directly to the main topic of this theory: Will Byers has powers. Why?

First, we come back to the day it all started.

November 6, 1983. Will was leaving the Wheeler’s house after losing the DnD campaign. Will told Mike the demogorgon got him. Here is where we see the lights twinkle for the first time. That means that there was already something or someone hearing Mike and Will from the Upside Down.

Then, Will and Dustin go in separate ways and Will bikes home alone. Here is where he saw this strange being in the middle of the streets, he got scared and fell off his bike.

A clock sound can be heard. The damn clock.

The strange figure is not a demogorgon. It’s not an UD animal either. It 's Vecna/001 himself. We know this because of its body shape and his disproportioned hands.

Was it Vecna who heard Will and followed him from Mike’s house?

Probably. It’s been confirmed that there’s a specific reason why Vecna was looking for Will in the first place.

Will wasn't even bleeding. And blood was what attracted the UD creatures.

Will ran away and arrived home, but Vecna kept following him. That’s where we find our second clue. The house’s door is opened with telekinesis.

Will runs to the tools room, and that’s where he gets caught by Vecna, who suddenly took him from there, but we never got to see how. We just saw the lights getting shinier and shinier until Will disappeared.

After Will goes missing, the party finds El in the woods and she shows Mike that she could recognize Will in a picture.

She knew he was in the Upside Down. She can even reach Will and listen to him using a Walkie Talkie.

Will now is in another dimension. It is just like hawkins, but it's dark and cold.

How is it possible that it's the exact copy of Hawkins?

Well, many people say that Will may have created an exact copy of Hawkins when he arrived at the UD because he was in a high stress situation and his powers showed up for the first time. (This part of the theory suggests that Will may have the power to create/shape/manifest things)

This would be the reason why Vecna/001 targeted Will?

This could be the reason why the Upside Down is frozen in time on the day Will went missing.

Remember that, in season 4, when the older teens were trapped in the UD, Nancy wanted to find some weapons from her room expecting those would be there, but they weren’t because they didn’t even exist yet. The UD was frozen in the past.

I spent last night watching compilations on YouTube and came across this challenge people did. I think it was on Tiktok. They recorded their boyfriends/girlfriends' reactions to them walking out of the shower naked. That's the idea of what this imagine is based on. I wrote this just for a bit of humor cause the next few will be kinda angsty

First Doctor

You knew it was childish, but it would also be hilarious to see how he reacted. You bit your lip, suppressing your giggles as you walked out of the ensuite, looking at Polly, who was trying not to laugh. You went into the bedroom and dropped your towel, getting his attention. He looked up from his book and raised an eyebrow at you.

"What are you doing?"

He would judge both of your sanity after it.

Second Doctor

He had returned from a meeting that was no doubt stressful as he had to keep up appearances and act like Ramón. You heard the door open and called out to him. He was taking off his jacket when you walked out. 

"I-I can come back later when you've, erm..."

You dropped your towel and grinned at his awestruck expression. You stopped the camcorder and put it down, looking at him with a smirk.

"You were saying..."

Third Doctor

You were cleaning off the dirt from your latest adventure when you got an idea. You dropped your towel and smiled when he realized that you were there.

"Oh, good, you're out. Hand me that spanner, will you?" He asked, his back turned. You found the spanner, holding it out to him.

"Thank you." He smiled at you, taking the spanner and turning to his project. He paused for a moment, and you smiled cheekily when he looked at you.

He smiled, putting the spanner down, and you giggled as you went into the Tardis, The Doctor following you.

Fourth Doctor

He was reading on the monitor, setting course for your next adventure. You knew Romana preferred her room, so you didn't have to worry about her. You entered the console room, finding him engrossed in the monitor.

"Doctor?"

"Mm, yes?" He turned when you didn't answer, and his eyes widened when he saw you were naked. You grinned, walking to the bedroom, knowing he would follow.

Fifth Doctor

You knocked on his door, hearing him ask who it was.

"Y/N." You told him.

"Come in." He was reading through his half-moon glasses when you entered, and you closed the door behind you. "What's the matter?"

He heard something hit the floor and looked up, seeing your broad grin.

You always had to provide him with temptation. He took off his glasses, setting them on his book on the table beside his bed, and you giggled when he threw the sheets off of him, jumping up to his feet. You smiled when your lips met, falling back on the bed.

Sixth Doctor

You returned from a tropical planet and went for a shower to clean your hair as you had been swimming in the water. You walked out of the bathroom, and as you were finding clothes to wear, you saw your mother's old camcorder. An idea formed as well as a grin, and you got the Tardis to led you to him.

He was in the library, looking for a particular book. He heard you enter but doesn't turn around.

"Have you seen the book I was reading? By H. G. Wells?" He asked.

"What's it called again?"

"The Time Machine."

"Are you going to debunk everything he says again?" You smiled knowingly, removing your towel and placing it over the couch.

"The man is an -" he turned around, eyes widening when he saw you. "- absolute idiot."

You giggled, ending the recording and showing him the book you had stashed away in a drawer. There were only so many times you could sit in bed and listen to him insult various authors.

You walked over, handing it to him, and he put it down, causing you to smile.

Seventh Doctor

While you and Ace slept off your latest misadventure, The Doctor went to the library and had a glass of wine. You saw him many times before you started dating, and now you would join him until you felt tired, and he would follow a few hours later.

You opened the door and grinned when you saw him reading. You took off the towel, approaching him quietly and threw it over his head. He took it off and turned, eyes widening when he saw you were naked.

He threw the book and towel aside, following you back to your bedroom.

Eighth Doctor

You were covered in what felt like slime, but you knew it wasn't. You liked slime, not an aliens saliva. The Doctor had gone to the bathroom down the hall while you used the one adjoined to your room.

He heard him enter the bedroom to get dressed and walked out, getting his attention. He swallowed thickly when you dropped your towel, and you giggled when he grinned, pulling you down on top of him on the bed.

War Doctor

You hadn't encountered the dangers of space until one day a parasite had gotten onto the ship. You had examined each other to check for the parasite and his eyes had admired you until he saw the parasite below your skin move. He removed it and you got dressed again.

Ninth Doctor

He was working on one of the pillars, high above the ground. You set up your camera, grinning as you walked out.

"Doctor?"

He hummed, looking at you, and you removed the towel. He fell from the pillar, and you rushed over to him.

"Oh, my God! Are you okay?"

He nodded, "I think so." You helped him stand up, and he looked you up and down. "Hold on a minute; you're naked."

You giggled when he aimed the sonic screwdriver in his hand toward the camera switching it off. His arms wrapped around you, causing you to laugh as he carried you down the corridor.

Tenth Doctor

He heard you walk in and began to talk quicker than you could comprehend, although you heard him mention the word 'planet.' You cleared your throat, and he turned just as the towel dropped. You heard the sonic buzz, seeing him swallow before flipping a switch and running up to you.

You laughed when he lifted you, kissing you hotly.

Eleventh Doctor

You knew Rory would kill you if he found out about this, but it was an opportunity you couldn't miss. You entered the console room, seeing him working underneath the console, fixing something that probably didn't need to be fixed.

You got your phone out, ready to record, and he turned when you called his name. You grimaced when he hit his head off the console, but he barely felt it as he scrambled to his feet. You dropped your phone when he crashed into you, smiling when your lips met.

Twelfth Doctor

He was waiting for you to get ready to when you entered the console room he turned to greet you, eyebrows rising when you removed the towel. You beckoned him with your finger, and he jokingly sighed, walking over to you with a smile.

Thirteenth Doctor

You walked into the bedroom, and she was getting ready for the party. "So, what do you think?" She turned to show you her suit and the towel had just touched the floor.

You walked over to her, and she took off her jacket. You stopped recording when your lips met, carelessly dropping the phone.

You entered his bedroom, and he was writing at a desk in the corner. He turned to you, freezing when he saw you were only in a towel.

You smirked at him, dropping it, and his jaw went slack. You stopped the camcorder and grinned at the video, squealing when he lifted you onto the bed.

Ainley!Master

You walked out of the bathroom, sighing when he wasn't there. You sought him out and found him in the console room, muttering to himself. You rolled your eyes when you heard him mention The Doctor and cleared your throat, dropping your towel.

He turned to you, and you threw the towel at him before running off. He grinned as he tossed the towel aside, chasing after you.

Safe to say, he forgot about his plans for The Doctor.

Roberts!Master

He was waiting for you to return after returning from the ambulance. He had gone first, and while you showered, he did the one thing he knew how to; plan.

You walked out of the bathroom, biting your lip anxiously. This was a horrible idea; it would be fun, but you weren't sure how he would react.

Your kiss was never spoken about after it happened, and it only added to your doubts.

"Good, you're here. I need to know more about Grace -" he looked at you, a smirk forming on his lips when you dropped the towel.

He stood up and approached you, covering the camera with a smile and pressing his lips to yours.

Jacobi!Master

You had ventured outside the gates for scrap metal, and when you returned, you took a decontamination shower. You knew he had sent Chantho out of the lab, and by the noises, he was working on the controls. You bit your lip as you walked out, placing your towel over a chair and clearing your throat to get his attention. He looked at you, eyes widening before he cursed, the wires he had been working on, sparking. You giggled and handed him the wire cutters.

Simms!Master

He was looking over papers, irritated by the paperwork, but he needed to do it if he wanted control.

You walked out of his bathroom, camera in hand, and he turned to you with a sigh. "Do I really -" he paused when he saw the towel drop and your sultry smile.

"I can forge your signature in the morning." You told him.

He grinned broadly and started clapping, admiring you for a moment before standing up slowly. You squealed when he ran suddenly, giggling when he collided with you in a heated kiss, carrying you to the bedroom.

Missy

You walked out of the bathroom, and Missy was sitting on the bed, rolling her eyes at one of your books you had brought with you. "I don't know why you insist on reading such garbage."

You would've been offended if you hadn't heard it before. "It's a classic. Besides, tonight is not going to be spent reading." She raised an eyebrow, a smirk on her lips when you dropped the towel.

She tossed the book aside, and before you could tell her that it was as a first edition, she pulled you down to her, silencing you with a kiss.

Dhawan!Master

He was working on the computers when you walked in. He glanced at you, doing a double-take before sighing.

"I'm working." He smiled at you.

You pouted. "Alright then..." You took off the towel and headed to the bedroom, hearing his footsteps behind you.

Jamie McCrimmon

You returned from a date where the Doctor had arranged for you to have dinner on a planet that was basically one big restaurant. You headed for a shower afterward and were drying your hair in the mirror when you got the idea. Jamie was getting ready for bed when you walked out.

"I liked that place. Very relaxing. Before we go home, we should go back for a nice -" he stopped mid-sentence when he turned to you, seeing you drop your towel. "- breasts - I mean trip! A nice trip." He chuckled nervously.

You smiled, walking towards him. You kissed him tenderly, and he placed his hands on your hips, turning you around, so your back hit the bed.

Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart

You were having a shower when he came home. He was changing out of his uniform when you walked out of the bathroom. You smiled sheepishly, and he looked away for a second, before admiring your body. He was speechless until you approached him, starting to undo his shirt.

"Every time I think there isn't another way you can surprise me, you go and do something like this."

You smiled, squealing when he turned you around and hovered over you on the bed.

Mike Yates

He was eating dinner, and you left to have a shower since you had already eaten. You looked at your nightgown and got a better idea than getting dressed for bed. You went downstairs, and Mike was carrying his plate to the sink.

"What did you think?"

You dropped your towel while he complimented your cooking, and he turned around to look at you, eyes widening, and you giggled when he dropped the plate.

"Come on, Captain." You said, holding a hand out.

He didn't need to be told twice.

Alydon

He was the leader and naturally that meant his time was occupied by many things. You knew he needed a night off from taking care of everyone so you had someone deliver him a letter that stated you had been injured and when Alydon burst into the room, his panicked eyes widened in shock, jaw hitting the floor when you stood naked, not a scratch on you.

"Oh you are cruel." He grinned toothily, walking towards you.

You smiled, wrapping your arms around his neck. "You love it."

Rory Williams

You were less shy about nudity than Rory was and he had come home from work one day to find you in the bedroom, combing your hair on the bed, sitting on your towel.

"You're home early." You smiled.

"And you're naked." He paused, hand on the door.

You walked over to him, smiling as you pecked his lips. "I don't know why you're so shy. It's nothing you haven't seen before."

Ian Chesterton

You were having a shower after another adventure. He had changed his clothes and came to your bedroom, entering just as you exited the bathroom, a towel around your hair but not your body. He stammered, turning around, apologising. You giggled, assuring him you would be out soon and Ian walked out, quickly closing the door. He opened his eyes, feeling like he'd held his breath for an hour, finally able to breathe again. A smile formed on his lips as he walked away.

Improving Your Writing when English Isn’t Your First Language (mega-ask)

As you can see above, we've gotten more than one question about writing, improving your writing, and even publishing in English when it's not your native language. First off: that's awesome. To anyone writing or even consuming in a language that's not your first, kudos to you.

You can google any variation of this question and get different articles with a ton of the same advice, and some with conflicting advice. Not only have I compiled the most commonly repeated information, but I've also reached out to people on our Discord server and others for their personal experiences.

I'll start off by listing concise versions of the advice and then expound on them further on in the article. Remember that we are not experts on your writing and that everyone learns in different ways and at different paces. These are in no particular order.

-practice

-get feedback from native sources

-don't undermine yourself to your audience

-Grammarly

-research

-don't get discouraged

Be patient

That's first because, well, duh. Patience is so important for both yourself and your writing. Writing is hard enough of a passion without the added difficulty of doing it in a language that doesn't come naturally. In the world of literature, writing/publishing in your non-native language isn't just a matter of translating words. It requires translating of ideas, concepts, and even cultural norms, which is why just slapping it into Google translate won't work.

Part of the reason for the advice of having patience, too, is that writing in your native language needs to take time. It doesn't really matter how fast you can whip out 20 pages of a first draft--it'll still be a simple first draft. Writing is a craft that requires not just love and passion but time. So what if you need a little bit of extra time--or a lot of extra time--because you're accomplishing a feat most don't even think about attempting?

Next is to practice.

That goes hand in hand with what I said about being patient. Again, writing in and of itself is all about practice and doing it daily (not that I'm an expert on getting that done, but you know). But when it comes to practice another language, there are different ways you can do that. You can reach out to native speakers (for English, there are going to be so many people willing to help, even just in our community! you just need to ask) and practice having conversations or ask them to look over your work. Practice by turning on your favorite movie or TV show in English with subtitles in your native language. Watch videos on YouTube, find a Spotify playlist/podcast, in your target language. There's also plenty of people who have done what you're trying to do who have shared their experiences and what helped them on those same platforms.

Get feedback from native speakers

This is a bit of an expansion on what I mentioned in the previous paragraph. In my experience, and from what others have shared, writing in a non-native language can be pretty clinical. Writing with figurative language or in metaphors won't be as easy or come as naturally as it does in your own language. Things like idioms and even pop cultures reference aren't always going to translate even if you have the exact words. That's where native speakers come into play. If they're willing to look over your work, whether as a friend or in an editorial position, they can give you advice about whether the wording in one spot sounds clunky or if a phrase doesn't make sense or if there're synonyms for what you already used to help convey your message even stronger.

Don't undermine yourself

This is something that I personally am saying. It's not mentioned on any of the linked sites, and no one I talked to said it. But as someone who is a native English speaker (and even has a degree in it) I think this is super important. This point goes towards native English speakers/writers, too. Don't undersell yourself and undermine your work to the audience before they have even picked it up. Disclaimers are different, and it all comes down to the words you use and how you use them. Let your readers know, whether it's people on AO3 or a literary agent, that English isn't your first language. Let them know concisely that they may find some basic errors--but stop there. Don't grovel. You have nothing to apologize for, especially once you've given that warning (those is it really a warning? what's so dangerous or scary about a few mistakes?). You're writing is not going to be any less of an accomplishment for a few grammatical errors, or mistranslated phrases, or even typos. I've seen so many mistakes in published works that it's kind of ridiculous. But if you put something out there for someone to read and in the same breath say "I don't know that this is worth reading" I'm going to need extra convincing to pick it up. *kicks soapbox away*

Grammarly

Grammarly is a wonderful tool that you can use, for FREE. It not only (with the free version) helps correct spelling and grammar, but can also help point out the tone you're writing with. For example, right now, Grammarly is telling me that this writing sounds mostly informative--which it's meant to be--and a little appreciative and friendly. When sending emails I've had it tell me that it sounds formal (which I was going for), and I've also had it not say anything because the text was a different kind of writing (like when I'm proof-reading something being posting it on AO3...). I honestly don't know what else it helps with once you've paid because I've been happily using the free version for about 3 years now.

Research

Don't be afraid to pick up a book, or head to the library, or pull up Google. Research is paramount to writing anyway, let alone once you're doing it in another language. Your research options are limitless and can include your mutuals on social media as well as those dictionaries that translate from one language into another. Research can also include (in my humble opinion) binge-watching/reading your favorite things...in English. In four years of university, one of the most frequently said things was to improve your writing 1) write every day and 2) read every day. You're never going to learn from worrying or overthinking, and you're also never going to learn from just doing DuoLingo (that's more conversational than literary anyway).

Something a member of Discord specifically said in relation to research was to look at morphology, at the roots of words (and root words). Morphology is, in linguistics, looking at how words are formed. For example, let's look at "biology". There are parts to this word that each has a different meaning, that formed together created a new/elevated meaning. "ology" means the study of something, and bio means life. So biology is, simply, the study of life. Once you've got those basics of things like "ology" under your belt it'll become easier to not just translate words but the concepts (if this works with your learning style).

Last but not least, don't get discouraged.

Writers of all kinds get discouraged when writing in their native language. Even those of us who speak English as our first language make mistakes worth discouragement (you will never know how many typos were corrected by Grammarly as I wrote this all out the first time). English is not an easy language. It's not the hardest, but it's far from easy (learning another language isn't easy regardless of what languages are involved). This is a post from someone who is a non-native English speaker but you would never know unless they told us.

In specific response to some of the asks:

English, like any other language, changes. It's a very dynamic language, actually, and from region to region, there will not only be different accents but different frames of reference. 1950 isn't so far back in time for the English to be drastically different from what is spoken today, but I'm in the USA and you're asking about Oxford. English in England has very different nuances, even more so than you would get between California and Texas and New York. This is a link to the Oxford English Dictionary list of words that became more common in the 50s. However, this is a generalized list, not specific to any English-speaking country let alone region or city. If you're wanting to look at how to convey the accent of people from/in Oxford, there are videos on YouTube of people speaking in different accents so that you can have an idea, a comparison, at least in your own mind. With the 50s it's going to be more just thinking really of what words and lifestyles and things weren't around yet; cell phones didn't exist yet. Here's another link to some stock images of Oxford in the 50s. Remember, this time was very close to WWII so there'll be lingering effects of that, especially in England.

About fight scenes and curses, there's a ton of resources on that. If you just search "fight" on our page, you'll get a ton of posts answering that question. Also, here's a link to a superb and excellent source on writing fight scenes. When it comes to curses...just watch Rage Quit on YouTube, or spend a while on TikTok. If you want to dive right in just Google "English curses" and there'll be YouTube videos, entries on Urban Dictionary, you name it.

When it comes to publishing, once you've gotten your manuscript is a perfect time to have a native-speaking friend look it over. Whether editing is their thing or not, they'll be able to help with the things that are really obvious. I don't have any experience publishing in a different language, though, so there might be other resources along the different stages to help you. Some general publishing advice I've gotten: when wanting to publish fiction, literature, start small. Start with short stories in literary journals, online and in print. You really can't make much headway with large publishing houses without a literary agent and it'll be easier to attract one if you have evidence that you can write, and write well enough people want to read it. When it comes to poetry, just start submitting. Get familiar with the process, and educate yourself on things like simultaneous submissions and a good rejection. Publishing is an ever-changing game that isn't cut and dry in any language or country. We can't tell you what's best, but my advice is to go with your gut and try your best. Don't be afraid to try again, too.

Everyone overthinks their writing. Or at least, everyone I know who writes does. Honestly, in my opinion, if you're not overthinking at least a little bit, you're not worried enough. You will never be able to fully know whether you've explained or described enough. A good chunk of the experience is up to the readers, so you have to leave them some wiggle room for imagination. But that doesn't mean you have to cheapen your story or short-change your characters. You mention specifically that you're POC, which I'm gonna guess also means that your characters will be POC. It's never too much to specify the race/ethnicity of your characters, even in a fantasy work. How you go about writing those descriptions might need to change but it's kind of like chocolate chips, in my mind: you decide those things with your soul.

So, there you have it. A ridiculously long way to say: you're awesome, you do you, practice, love yourself and your writing, and don't be afraid to put yourself out there (in any way).

Timothee Chalamet Tarot Year Cards Timeline (2016-2020) Bonus 2021!

As promised, I have compiled a timeline for Timmy's tarot year cards, starting from 2016. I will only be going through the meanings of each of the years through the symbolism of tarot. I might add some minute details, but everyone can fit in the blanks as they see fit.

This is also a disclaimer, this is meant for entertainment purposes. I enjoy using tarot symbolism to understand the world around me better, doesn't mean I am claiming there to be truth to my words. Thank you. During the time I was writing, whether I was listening to music or just receiving channeled messages, certain words and phrases stood out. I will be putting those in bold and italics.

Onward to the timeline! 

2016 - Hanged Man

Let's start with 2016 which was the Hanged Man card. The card itself is about looking at things from a different perspective, enlightenment. My soul cries for deliverance. According to Mary Greer, "it is a time to release things from the past". I tried to kill the pain, crimson regret. Release people you are attached to, it might feel like a betrayal. There is plenty of spiritual growth during this year. There is a sense of sacrifice for this new vision. It is a time to put someone else's needs before your own. Confusion, a fog because one is trying to see through the mask of the past. It is time to purify the self from the past, bring in only what truly matters. This was a year of reaching new levels of self for Timmy.

2017 - Death  

As suggested, Death is a year full of change and transformation. Very rarely it means an actual death, but this could have very well been an ego death in Timmy's case. Everything learned from the Hanged Man year is being implemented here. Seeing things from a different perspective to accepting this—we're only deceiving ourselves—someday you'll remember yourself.(At this point of me writing this timeline, I had a very intense connection and I truly feel I was psychically attacked but I will spare you all those details. I am okay though.)

"Time to shed old skin for new growth." In a Hanged Man year, you face whatever is hanging you up. If we go by the cards, Timmy faced the issue in 2016, coming to 2017 he is liberated from what was hanging him up. By letting go of what doesn't service you, it clears the path for better things to come your way. I truly believe this was the year for that. Exploring new possibilities. In this Death year, you gain the ability to merge with something—someone and the experience is deeply transformative. Awareness for life and love, everything starts to clear up. His connection, bonds, we know well where I'm going with this.

2018 - Temperance 

In 2018, Timmy's card was Temperance. Alchemy, blending together elements of self to work for you. This is a time of combining lessons and putting them into practice. It is a time to rejuvenate, replenish, and relive. There is an interest in new forms of old things and to revive ideas which might have not made it to light. Being near water can be healing during a Temperance year. This was a year of making connections and networking. Learning from the Hanged Man and Death years, Timmy is implementing the lessons learned but I sense a warning. This card is about moderation. Even if lessons were learned and implemented, if abused, they won't bring healing properties, instead it will bring bondage.

2019 - Devil

The Devil year is very important because not only is Timmy a Capricorn Sun, which the Devil card is ruled by, but by not utilizing the resources he worked hard toward/gained during Temperance year, his Devil year will only tighten the chains of enslavement to the industry. If he doesn't play his cards right, he will be consumed by schemes and promises of success, which will only bring him farther away from his true self. In fact, during a Devil Year you can lose your identity because it is like selling your soul to the Devil. I believe Timmy is humble, but along the way he lost himself, not trusting himself enough and getting into situations very unlike what he has portrayed in the past. What is it all for? "Becoming possessed by your desires." It is important to define how these desires make you or break you. If you become a slave to your desires (or ambitions), are you truly enjoying yourself? This is a year to really look deep within and have a conversation with your shadow.

2020 - Tower

Last one and we shall be up to date. Here it is everyone, 2020, the epitome of the Tower card, in my opinion. In the Tower year there is plenty of upheaval, it is a time to have beliefs shattered before your eyes. The Death year, truly, has nothing on a Tower year. Whatever barriers were created during a Devil year, this is the perfect time to figure out what really matters to you. The Tower card is the most intimidating to me, because there is so much chaos, especially in the Rider Waite version. All the ambition and steps toward a more demanding future will lead to plenty of tests, which is the Universe's way of checking in on you. 

Like, hey do you still want this? Is it really what's best for you right now? Expect your whole belief system to get shaken up, possibly crumbled. Whatever has been repressed will be released. Safe inside myself. Without the mask where will you hide? Can't find yourself, lost in your lies. Timmy could either accept what's happening or continue to ignore what's stirring inside. You know you've got everybody fooled. This is a year to purge, purge everything that has been holding his inner truth back. The change will be so big, please Timmy listen to your gut some. Don't get lost in this 3D, there is so much more than you realize.

Bonus 2021 - Strength

Reset.

Primary questions Timmy should ask himself: "Is my heart in what I'm doing?" "Is it what I truly desire?"

He needs to know where he stands. He cannot go on without assessing these aspects of self first. Of course, he can but he will only allow the puppet strings of his Devil year take more control until he loses himself. He won't recognize himself.

This is a lesson for anyone that needs to do inner work. It is so, so important to feed the soul. It hungers just as much as the body. I feel 2021 will be an eventful year full of passion for Timmy. It could indicate a deeper sensual or sexual exploration (like his Death year). All this passion if directed with pure and true intention can lead to the biggest spike in his career yet. As long as he sticks to what he wants in a productive way, he will benefit from immense soul growth.

Subdued shades of orange with the occasional single brushstrokes of pink projected through his bedroom window and painted him in light. A bird chirped, and another chirped back in a cycle of communication lost on other animals. Alex did not realize the change outside his window until the light gradient settled on a loud yellow and created glare on his monitor.

It was sunrise, and he had just finished editing for his most recent video. Where the hours of work went was unclear as it played back with the same level of effects as other videos on his channel. But the hours showed in his fringe, darkened with grease, and in his hands that shook from low blood sugar.

Sleep was for the strong – for those who executed enough psychological control to shush their thoughts. To untie their mental boat and let it drift into the oblivion sea. Alex was not one of those people. Quieting his internal monologue required medication that put him in a state not unlike how he imaged it felt to be roofied.

Or else he did not sleep.

And Alex did not sleep that night. Not because he needed to edit or because he was so busy he did not realize he was tired. No, none of that. He knew he was tired: exhausted even: his limbs felt heavier as, throughout the evening, his blood was spliced and diluted with concrete mix.

Why did he not take his medication? Why not sleep? He did not want to be trapped in ~the dream~ again.

Despite his fundamental understanding of the uncontrollable manner in which the unconscious forms dreams, Alex was consumed with guilt for dreaming about kissing his friend's girlfriend. So, he punished himself: not allowing his mind rest nor his stomach food as he threw himself into his editing.

He would not allow himself think about it long enough to come to the obvious conclusion – that the real issue was not the dream itself. Despite what imallexx edits might guide someone to believe (with their cutesy music over compilations of smiling pictures or clips of him laughing), Alex was a young man in his twenties. And young men (who enjoy kissing) think and fantasize and dream about kissing.

And far more than kissing but regardless... He had dreamed about kissing his friends' girlfriends before: or at least Mia that one time. Ok, two times. He had dreamed about kissing cute men he saw on the train. He had even once dreamed about kissing Princess Leia.

It was natural. But Alex's thoughts about Y/N felt damning, felt wrong. Perhaps because it was the first instance in which he thought he had a chance to get the girl. Not that he would do; he refused.

It hit him. If he were always doing something else, then he would simply not have time to think about it – about her. Alex grabbed a pencil off his desk and his JoJo Siwa notebook and wrote a schedule for the coming week.

His hand cramped from furiously trying to keep up with dictating the information as it spilled from his head. He finished writing, but there were still stretches of time to fill-up including that entire morning. Was he desperate enough to disconnect from himself that he would risk the Budweiser Bug to visit his other friends outside his apartment building? Yes.

While rummaging around his bedroom for fresh(er) clothing to wear, Alex swiped a hat off his desk and concealed his unwashed hair with it. Not his tiktok bucket hat nor his iconic pink one, it was a lilac snapback with an image of lavender embroidered on the side. He rang Fraser.

“Hello?” Fraser answered with a voice bogged down with exhaustion. 

“How’re you doing?” Alex greeted.

“Um.” (a pause – a processing delay) “Fine. Good. Yeah, what about you?” 

“Trying to keep busy.” He tucked his wallet and keys into the pocket of a pair of joggers he found hanging, oddly enough, over the towel rail in his bathroom. Changing into them required a series of short jumping motions as he used just one hand. “You have any videos to film that I could jump in on?”

“Well I’ve been brainstorming ideas for a new series called…”

At the bathroom sink: Alex did not wait for the water to warm before splashing it over his face. He did a quick once-over and washed his cheeks and forehead with hand soap. Picking up his toothbrush from its holder stirred an uneasiness in him, he could not explain; he brushed his teeth and spit without rinsing.

Returning into the conversation he caught the middle of what would sound like a rant or passionate tangent if he did not know that was just how Fraser talked, “…and I’ve been working on a script for something on social repose—”

“Another needs to be stopped?" asked Alex.

Fraser laughed, letting it linger before continuing, "You got me. It's not done, but I could definitely use you for some reaction bits."

"Great! I'll be setting off within the hour." Ambling around – as is the norm during phone calls – Alex found himself in the kitchen. Half-full liters of lemonade, grocers bags, and dirty dishes cluttered the counters. He worked around the rubbish to make himself scrambled eggs with ham.

Fraser asked, "And you're sure about leaving the apartment? With the Bug? We could do a discord-call."

"Might as well get in some time on the train before things shut down."

"Alright, mate," there was a smile behind Fraser's voice, "just don't get arrested."

With their call ended, Alex finished cooking. He ate his entire breakfast in the same amount of time it took him to pull on his shoes.

During the train ride, he turned his phone's volume to eighty percent and blasted his music through his earbuds. His playlist was a mixture of two to three alt-rock or indie pop bands with a sprinkling of mainstream hits: a calm and comfortable backbeat throughout. No outlier tracks that burst into hard-hitting or exceptionally fast beats – nothing that might pump-up his adrenaline or be useful to scream along with in a fit of anger. That was not the connection he made with music in his formative years. Music to him was something to drown out that pesky internal monologue when lying in bed for too long – doing nothing – but perhaps pondering on some heartbreaking or otherwise emotional line in a song.

He arrived at Fraser and James' apartment when it was still technically morning. Knocking on the door, he was greeted with frantic barking and his tired ~obviously hungover~ friend.

After fussing over Kenji, Alex spotted the camera set-up in the kitchen and took his seat. Fraser and him watched several of social repose's music videos: covers of emo electronic, synth-pop songs, and a lot more original EMD songs than either man guessed – and all were dreadful. Neither could sit through a single video for more than forty-five seconds, and most of the footage they shot was just of their mouths hanging open in a disturbed shock.

Nonetheless, it was a great distraction. Alex liked feeling like he was helping out smaller channels – even if it was just those who were his friends.

Only as Fraser was cleaning up his equipment and Alex was sitting on the couch playing with Kenji, did James clamber out of bed and stroll out of his bedroom.

"Ow. What was that?" Alex asked in an exaggerated voice when the shiba nipped at yet another one of his fingers. Turning his attention to James, he asked, "Has he been biting a lot recently?"

James answered in his softer and calmer 'tired' voice, "He only bites sometimes. His brain is probably just locked on the idea of food right now; this is around the time Fraser usually feeds him."

"I just wanted a picture for instagram." Alex tried to find a good angle to hold his phone. He pushed Kenji to sit on his lap for a nice picture (which was sure to get hundreds of comments and love heart emojis), but the shiba was far too hyper to sit still. The few useable photos he got were of Kenji biting at and tugging the strings of his hoodie. "Come on, Kenj."

"Reckon he knows what you're doing with your phone, just mugging you off on purpose."

Alex hung around the apartment for the rest of the afternoon: enjoying an ubereats lunch and having James crush him at mario kart...multiple times in a row. The three talked youtube and the continuing aftershocks and effects of the ad crisis, and Fraser asked for feedback on a few video ideas.

An hour or two from sunset, Alex said his goodbyes and caught the train home to his apartment. Upon unlocking the front door, he was met with an interrogation.

"And where have you been all day?" asked George standing with his feet planted shoulder-width apart, and his arms crossed over his chest – the spitting image of a disapproving parent to a reckless teenager.

Smiling his fang-displaying side smile, Alex challenged, "Why do you need to know?"

"Sammy came over to film the opening pokemon cards video, and you weren't here. Neither of us could get a hold of you. Do you even care about my upload schedule?" It was a half-humorous rant with an eerie sense of latent seriousness.

"Phone died." He shrugged, not looking his flatmate in the eye and certainly not wanting to admit the truth – he put his phone on do not disturb earlier that morning, muting most everyone, including George and Sammy.

There was not an ounce of belief in George's expression, "Fine. Where were you, though, for real? You never leave the flat, let alone disappear; almost called Will and got a search team going."

"I was just filming with Fraser." Alex bent over to take off his trainers. There was a click from his shoulder when he did – alarming for such young bones. "We should host something soon."

And he meant soon. As talk of a complete social shutdown, rather than just more public health advisements, dominated news outlets; the thought of non-essential businesses being made to close their doors was frightening. And what was worse than the eking paranoia seeping into every day, was the horrifying realization that the pubs were considered non-essential.

Uncrossing his arms, George's posture shifted to be more normal. His brow furrowed as he seemed to examine his flatmate heavily; even so, he nodded in agreement. "Sure, we could do that."

"Great," Alex chirped and started toward his bedroom.

George grabbed his arm as he tried to walk past him. His hand clasped tight enough that his fingers touched his thumb, and nails would have dug into the pale skin – if he had nails that is. Both men were silent amongst the awkwardness of the interaction.

Sidestepping out of the armlock, Alex waited for George to speak.

"You're doing ok. Right, Al?"

"Yeah. I'm ok."

"But, you'd tell me if you weren't."

"Of course." Alex left to his bedroom. It was in a bad state, but he did not bother himself with picking clothes off the floor or taking food wrappers from his side table to the kitchen bin. He pulled his phone from his pocket and checked for messages: sure enough, there were eleven messages from George: ranging from asking where he was to blaming his laziness for ruining their chance to film.

Alex flopped himself onto his bed and started to scroll through his photos with Kenji. There was not much choice, so he took the least blurry one and posted it to instagram – with a bright filter and a sarcastic caption that took him longer to come up with than he would have liked.

Fifty minutes he spent scrolling through instagram, occasionally checking back to watch the likes on his photo go up and to reply to some of the first commenters. It was mind-numbing in the good and proper sense.

Until he saw it – and it was not his fault, he just happened upon it – and it sent his thoughts into hyperdrive.

A post. A photo. Y/N sitting on her sofa in the dark with the one light source (presumably her television) from behind the camera casting a blue light across her face. One hand clutching the blanket in her lap as the other hand was held up. Jewel-like eyes peering through her fingers and connecting with the camera. A smile playing purposefully on her lips.

If Alex's thoughts at that moment were put into a blender, they might still have come out making more sense than they did in his head. Eyes. Lips. Blue. Watching? Angelic. Eyes. Fingers. Dancing. Blue. Lips. Taste. Lips. Soft. Photographer. Photographer.

Before he might ask for the app to load more photos, Alex's burst of energy and hectic but classic over-thinking was interrupted. From above him came the sound of muffled shouting. He held his breath, stilled as if a prey animal not wanting to be spotted, and focused an ear to the noise.

There were no words he could pick out, but from what he could tell – or from the details he filled in – it was not a light argument of few words but something that might supersede a genuine scrap. And it was coming from Sammy and Y/N's apartment.

As he listened, his imagination wandered. Alex visualized himself, rushing to Y/N's aid and wrapping his thin arms around her in more emotional comfort than physical protection. He saw her turn to him with wet eyes and a red nose before burying her face into his shirt. It would be uncomfortable – as it is to be around distressed people. Yet it would be comfortable – as she would fit against him so well.

Again, his imagination wandered. Alex visualized himself as the one shouting at Y/N and growing angrier as she refused his hard-hitting gaze. He saw her turn to him with wet eyes and a red nose before hiccupping out a sob and dashing from the room. No. That was not right. It was wrong. He would not— could not do that.

For example, we’re going to start things off with the Top 10 Most Iconic Mariah Carey songs; on Tuesday, we’ll look at remixes. All songs mentioned these lists can be found on streaming services (e.g. Spotify and Apple Music). That means deep, deep cuts like “Slipping Away” off the B-side of the “Always Be My Baby” single, and “Help Me Make It (Through the Night)”, Mariah’s cover of a country song, which aren’t available, aren’t included. To explore the most iconic MC songs, we have to look at streaming numbers (based on Spotify data, accurate as of Dec. 2019), MV views (based on YouTube data, accurate as of Dec. 2019), appearances on concert set lists, but also it’s prevalence outside of the Mariah fan base. “Butterfly” is an iconic ballad within the fan base, but pales compared to another empowering song like “Hero”, which non-MC fans most likely know even if they hate Mariah.

10. “My All” Butterfly

“My All” makes its way into almost all of MC’s concert set lists since its release in 1997, appearing most recently in Mariah’s Caution World Tour. In this way, it gathers a lot more exposure than some of her other #1’s, such as “Dreamlover” or “Honey”. Despite its relatively low number of streams compared to other songs on this list, the number of views for the main music video is actually placed sixth on this list, and for good reason. The MV for “My All” is arguably the most artistic of MC’s catalogue, if not at least the steamiest. The video is in black-and-white, and features Mariah Carey floating on water with cutscenes of some hot model. The song appeals to a more specific audience, mainly adults, but the incorporation of Latin guitars will evoke a certain headiness seen only in a handful of Mariah songs.

9. “Vision of Love” Mariah Carey

This may be confusing; overall, “Vision of Love” received the least views and least streams of any of the songs listed here. Why is it not last on the list? Unlike “My All”, this song is one for the entire family. Don’t believe me? Many popular artists of the 2000s cited this song as their inspiration, including the great Beyoncé. Besides the complex runs, which becomes more complex in the live version, “Vision of Love” is a peer into Mariah’s vocal range, from her lows (E♭3) to a signature whistle note (C7), and a blend of genres, including pop, R&B and gospel. Even if it spawned a generation of over-singing vocalists, this was MC’s debut, a tour de force that inspired a new generation of singers. And thanks to its prevalence in Mariah’s concert set lists, it could very well even be inspiring this new generation.

8. “Fantasy” Daydream

“Fantasy” is a bop, and arguably the song that pushed Mariah to super stardom. Despite being nominated in six categories and controversially winning nothing on the night of the 38th Grammy Awards, Daydream cemented MC’s status in the music industry. “Fantasy” was the album’s leading track, and it became the first ever single by a female artist to debut #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It stayed there eight consecutive weeks. If the pop version isn’t iconic enough, with the music video featuring Mariah riding on a roller coaster, the remix with O.D.B. is arguably just as famous, if not more so. The “Bad Boy Fantasy Remix” introduced the featured rapper formula into mainstream music, a formula that’s practically standard in the industry nowadays.

7. “Always Be My Baby” Daydream

Yet, the numbers for "Fantasy" cannot compete with this song. A reason for this is perhaps a lack of airplay; “Fantasy” is danceable but there’s no hook.“Always Be My Baby” was the third single off the Daydream album. After breaking records with “Fantasy”, by debuting at #1, and “One Sweet Day”, for logging 16 weeks at #1, “Always Be My Baby” debuted at #2 and logged only 2 weeks at #1; however, the stats show how age has affected the song’s popularity with the MV views for “Always Be My Baby” doubling those of “Fantasy”. “Fantasy” takes more of a backseat in Mariah’s concert set lists. “One Sweet Day” almost faded into obscurity before it made a resurgence this decade when songs like “Despacito” and “Old Town Road” rivalled its chart records; it’s also made a reappearance on set lists. All of this is to illustrate that “Always Be My Baby” has always been a staple, a favourite amongst fans and the general listeners. The song has many great Mariah moments, but what really latches on and sets the ground for “Always Be My Baby” to play on is the opening “Doo doo doo”. This song does what “Fantasy” didn’t do, and that’s creating a feeling. The song and the music video is a perfect pairing. You listen to the song, and you are reminded of sitting by a firepit, reminiscing about a significant first love that’s no longer, the exact imagery that’s been replicated by the MV; this is probably why it has so many views.

6. “Touch My Body” E=MC²

“Touch My Body” is Mariah’s second-most recent #1 single of her 19 chart-toppers, and the leading single to the 2008 album E=MC². Although its release was in the middle of February, the song really transports you to an eternal summer. The song received its fair share of critiques, including more than a couple that said “Touch My Body” lacks Mariah’s 5-octave range; nonetheless, if MC’s previous album, The Emancipation of Mimi, was MC’s comeback, this single solidified her status as 'the diva' with a new decade of listeners. It’ll be wrong to think, however, that Mariah wasn’t in on all the fun as well, and this is why the MV has its views. The music video is a fantasy sequence of Mariah flirting with Jack McBrayer in a mansion. After her comeback, this was Mariah’s way of going back to doing something that defied the critic’s expectations. With The Emancipation of Mimi, she proved that she still got it — the range, the ability to write hits, the star power; "Touch My Body” brings back the Mariah we have come to love in the past decade — the extravagance, the luxury, the seeming aloofness. For a moment, “Touch My Body” captures MC having fun, and the simple structure of this song reflects that.

5. “Obsessed” Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel

“Obsessed” gained new life this year, ten years after its initial release in 2009, with the #Obsessed challenge on TikTok. Teens were creating choreography for this song, and simultaneously propelling Mariah to becoming Queen of Memes, one of MC’s many titles. The opening to “Obsessed” breathes new life into a line borrowed from one of Mariah’s favourite movies, Mean Girls, “Why are you so obsessed with me?” This line, along with “I don’t know her”, has its place in meme culture. Besides its relevance to a new generation, its iconicity can also be contributed to the fact that it's a high profile diss track that attacks Eminem’s harassment, but it’s pop, not rap. Its conception introduced a new generation of pop artists to using their tracks as a way to call-out others. “Obsessed” resurfaces perennially when Eminem decides that his almost-two-decade old alleged fling with MC somehow deserves another mention. Maybe she’s the best thing to have happened to Eminem? Lyrically, “Obsessed” is one of Mariah’s sharpest, with her directly calling out Eminem’s desire to make something out of nothing; see: “you hatin' hard/Ain’t goin' feed you, I'm a let you starve/Graspin’ for air, and I'm ventilation/You out of breath, hope you ain't waitin’.”

4. “We Belong Together” The Emancipation of Mimi

“We Belong Together” is Mariah’s comeback track. Regardless of whether she knew this song would make it big when she was writing it, this song would live on in the history books as the song that told skeptics that Mariah ain’t going anywhere. “We Belong Together” is very stripped down — it’s Mariah singing on top of a piano and a beat, then Mariah singing on top of herself in the chorus. For a song about unrequited love, which Mariah usually packages as being more upbeat than it should be (see: “Always Be My Baby” or “All I Want For Christmas Is You”), “We Belong Together” is incredibly visceral. It’s a sad song and it shows, and somehow Mariah communicates the frustration and swirling of emotions so well that you might even tear up by the end when she holds that fifteen-second note. The other unique thing about this song is that she sings the lyrics as if it’s a rap, very reminiscent of her earlier hip-hop inspired tracks like “Breakdown” ft. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, an overlooked fan favourite. Try singing it without ever practising, and you’ll find that MC placed words in a very specific rhythm. This song also introduced the ‘Mariah-ballad structure’, a formula that she continues to follow for many of her ballads: It consists of an absent bridge with a belted last chorus that takes its place. And as for the MV, Mariah elopes with a lover in a car while wearing the same Vera Wang wedding dress she wore at her real-life marriage is as iconic as it gets.

There’s a reason “We Belong Together” didn’t crack the Top 3: It’s strictly a song about unrequited love. Mariah, alone, has quite a few of those in her catalogue. And there’s only oh-so-many occasions in which to bring back this song unless it’s already part of your daily repertoire. If Minnie Riperton’s “Lovin’ You” takes first place for the most iconic use of whistle notes in a pop song, “Emotions” no doubt takes second; however “Emotions” has to take first for inspiring every pop singer and their grandmas to use whistle notes, from Christina Aguilera and Leona Lewis to Ariana Grande and Tori Kelly. Yes, “Emotions” is a love song, similar to “We Belong Together”, but it’s also a learning tool for many aspiring pop and R&B singers — this song is a resource. It’s like learning music theory and referring back to Mozart and Beethoven. “Emotions” contains those whistle notes, all the up to an E7, but it also contains low notes (several C3s), high belts (F5s and G5s), head notes (the “You” in G5), repetitive phrasing from C5 - E5, a couple of sustained E5 belts, and melismas. In the live versions, you really get to observe MC’s stamina as we goes through the song with ease. And if you compile all of the live versions of “Emotions”, Mariah demonstrates five full octaves from B2 to B7. Simply put, “Emotions” is an encyclopedia of vocal virtuosity for rising and seasoned singers.

There’s a thing about “Emotions”, and it’s best if I told you through an anecdote: I played this song in a classroom once, and one of the 5-year olds asked why she [Mariah] was screaming in the song. Blasphemous, I know. Arguably though, the whistle notes are more well-known than the actual song itself. But “Hero” is one of those instances where you know the song, even though you don’t think you do. Just listen to those opening piano notes; flashes of the entire song will surely follow. Not surprisingly, this is the first ever MC song I’ve ever heard; I heard it when I was seven because we had to perform an ASL version of it, but I didn’t know it was Mariah at the time. I didn’t know until possibly a decade later when I thought back on the signs, and the lyrics “And a hero comes along” popped into mind. Obviously, this list is tinged by my own biases; however, “Hero”, this song about loving yourself, and finding that hero within yourself, is special, not only to the fan base, but to anyone who needs a pick-me-up, even if they’re not Mariah fans. It’s radio-friendly; it’s singing competition-friendly (it only goes up to an E5, a mid-belt for Mariah; for reference Idina Menzel goes up to E♭5 in “Let It Go” and “Into the Unknown”); it’s graduation-friendly; and it’s concert-friendly, considering Mariah almost always ends her concert with “Hero”. It’s a sappy song, one that Mariah initially didn’t like, but she explains that she sings it every time because you never know who might need it.

With winter comes holiday season comes Mariah Carey, Queen of Christmas comes “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. Shows, especially ones dripping out new episodes, are more fun when you have someone to chat about them with.

Eventually, Quibi should layer on in-app second-screen features. Create a way to share comments at the end of each episode that people read during the credits so they feel like they’re in a viewing community.

What’s most disappointing about Quibi is that it has the potential to be something fresh, merging classically produced premium content with the modern ways we use our phones. Yet beyond shows being shot in two widths so you can switch between watching in landscape or portrait mode at any time, it really is just a random cable channel shrunk down.

One of the few redeeming opportunities for Quibi is using the daily episode release schedule to serialize content that benefits from suspense, as InternetRyan notes. Bingeing via traditional streaming services can burn through thrillers before they can properly build up suspense and fan theories or let late-comers catch up while a show is still in the zeitgeist. Cliffhangers with just a day instead of a week to wait could be Quibi’s killer feature.

Suspense is also one thing TikTok fails at. Within a single video, they’re actually often all about suspense, waiting through build up for a gag or non-sequitur to play out. But creators try to rope in followers by making a multi-minute video and splitting it into parts so people subscribe to them to see the next part. Yet since TikTok doesn’t always show timestamps and surfaces old videos on its homescreen, it can often be a chore to find the part two, and there’s no good way for creators to link them together. TikTok could stand to learn about multi-episode content from Quibi.

But today, Quibi feels like a minitiaturized and degraded version of what we already get for free on the web or pay for with Netflix. Quibi charging $4.99 per month with ads or $7.99 without seems like a steep ask without delivering any truly must-see shows, novel interactive experience, or memory-making social moments.

Quibi’s success may simply be a test of how bad people are at cancelling 90-day free trials (hint: they’re bad at it!). The bull case is that absent-minded subscribers amongst the 300,000 first-day downloads and some diehard fans of the celebs it’s given shows will bring Quibi enough traction to raise more cash and survive long enough to socialize its product and teach creators to exploit the format’s opportunities. But the bear case is already emerging in Quibi’s rapidly declining App Store rank, that fell from #4 overall when it launched Monday to #21 yesterday. Lackluster content and no virality means it might never become the talk of the town, leading top content producers to slink away or half-ass their contributions, leaving us to dine on short video elsewhere.

It takes either audacious self-confidence or reckless hubris to build a completely asocial video app in 2020. You can decide which best describes Quibi, Hollywood’s $1.75 billion-funded attempt at a mobile-only Netflix of six to 10-minute micro-TV show episodes. Quibi manages to miss every trend and tactic that could help make its app popular. The company seems to believe it can succeed on only its content (mediocre) and marketing dollars (fewer than it needs).

I appreciate that Quibi is doing something audaciously different than most startups. Rather than iterating toward product-market fit, it spent a fortune developing its slick app and buying fancy content in secret so it could launch with a bang.

Yet Quibi’s bold business strategy is muted by a misguided allegiance to the golden age of television before the internet permeated every entertainment medium. It’s unshareable, prescriptive, sluggish, cumbersome and unfriendly. Quibi’s unwillingness to borrow anything from social networks makes the app feel cold and isolated, like watching reality shows in the vacuum of space.

In that sense, Quibi is the inverse of TikTok, which feels fiercely alive. TikTok is designed to immediately immerse you in crowd-vetted content that grabs your attention and inspires you to spread your take on it to friends. That’s why TikTok has almost 2 billion downloads to date, while Quibi picked up just 300,000 on the day of its big splash into market.

Here’s a breakdown of the major missteps by Quibi, why TikTok does it better and how this new streaming app can get with the times.

What Hollywood thinks we want

Quibi feels like some off-brand cable channel, with a mix of convoluted reality shows, scripted dramas and news briefs. Imagine MTV at noon in the mid-2000s. Nothing seemed must-see. There’s no Game of Thrones or Mandalorian here. While the production value is better than what you’ll find on YouTube, the show concepts feel slapdash with novelty that quickly fades. Chrissy Teigen as a small claims court judge and a cooking show where blindfolded chefs have to guess what food was just exploded in their faces…

The catalog feels like the product of TV writers being told they have 10 seconds to come up with an idea. “What would those idiots watch?” The shows remind me of old VR games that are barely more than demos, or an app built in a garage without ever asking prospective users what they need. Co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg may have produced The Lion King and Shrek, but the app’s content feels like it was greenlit by, well, Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s leader Meg Whitman, who indeed is Quibi’s CEO.

Despite being built for a touch-screen interface, there’s little Bandersnatch-style interactive content so far, nor are the creators doing anything special with the six to 10-minute format. The shows feel more like condensed TV programs with episodes ending when there would be a commercial break. There’s no onboarding process that could ask which popular TV shows or genres you’re into. As the catalog expands, that makes it less likely you’ll find something appealing within a few taps.

TikTok comes from the opposite direction. Instead of what Hollywood thinks we want, its content comes straight from its consumers. People record what they think would make them and their friends laugh, surprised or enticed. The result is that with low to zero production budget, random kids and influencers alike make things with millions of Likes. And as elder millennials, Gen Xers and beyond get hooked, they’re creating videos for their peers, as well. The algorithm monitors what you’re hovering over and rapidly adapts its recommendations to your style.

TikTok is fundamentally interactive. Each clip’s audio can be borrowed to produce remixes that personalize a meme for a different demographic or subculture. And because its stars are internet natives, they’re in constant communication with their fan base to tune content to what they want. There’s something for everyone. No niche is too small.

The Fix: Quibi should take a hint from Brat TV, the Disney Channel for the YouTube generation that gives tween social media stars their own premium shows about being a grade school kid to create content with a built-in fan base. [Disclosure: My cousin Darren Lachtman is a Brat co-founder.)

Take the Chrissy’s Court model, and shift it to stars who are 20 years younger. Give TikTok phenoms like Charli D’Amelio or Chase Hudson Quibi shows and let them help conceptualize the content, and they’ll bring their legions of fans. Double-down on choose-your-own-adventures and fan voting game shows that leverage the phone’s interactivity. Fund creators that will differentiate Quibi by making it look like anything other than daytime TV. And ask users directly what they want to see right when they download the app.

No screenshots

This is frankly insane. Screenshots of Quibi appear as a blank black screen. That means no memes. If people can’t turn Quibi scenes into jokes they’ll share elsewhere, its shows won’t ever become fixtures of the cultural zeitgeist like Netflix’s Tiger King has. Yes, other mobile streaming apps like Netflix and Disney+ also block screenshots, but they have web versions where you can snap and share what you want. Quibi never should have structured its deals to license content from producers in a way that prevented any way to riff on or even let friends preview its content.

TikTok, on the other hand, defaults to letting you download any video and share it wherever you please — with the app’s watermark attached. That’s fueled TikTok’s stellar growth as clips get posted to Twitter and Instagram — and drive viewers back to the app. It has spawned TikTok compilations on YouTube, and a whole culture of remixing that expands and prolongs the popularity of trending jokes and dances.

The Fix: Quibi should allow screenshots. There’s little risk of spoilers or piracy. If its deals prohibit that, then it should offer pre-approved screenshots and video clips/trailers of each episode that you can download and share. Think of it like an in-app press kit. Even if we’re not allowed to set up the perfect screenshot for making a meme, at least then we could coherently discuss the shows on other social networks.

Sluggish pacing

On mobile, you’re always just a swipe away from something more interesting. It’s like if you watched TV with your finger permanently hovering over the change channel button. Ever noticed how movie trailers now often start with a fast-forward collage of their most eye-catching scenes? Quibi seems intent on communicating prestige with its slow-building dramas like The Most Dangerous Game and Survive, which both had me bored and fast-forwarding. And that’s watching Quibi at home on the couch. While on the go, where it was designed to be consumed, slow pacing could push users with a minute or two to spare to open Instagram or TikTok instead.

None of this is helped by Quibi not auto-playing a trailer or the first episode the moment you scroll past a show on the home screen. Instead, you see a static title card for two seconds before it starts playing you an excerpt of the program. That makes it more cumbersome to discover new shows.

Where TikTok wins is in immediacy. Creators know users will swipe right past their video if it’s not immediately entertaining or obviously revving up to a big reveal. They grab you in the first second with smiles, costumes, bold captions or crazy situations. That also makes it easy for viewers to dismiss what’s irrelevant to them and teach the TikTok algorithm what they really want. Plus, you know that you can score a dopamine hit of joy even if you only have 30 seconds. TikTok makes Quick Bites feel like an understaffed sit-down restaurant.

The Fix: Quibi needs to teach creators to hook viewers instantly by previewing why they should want to watch. Since tapping a show’s card on the Quibi homepage instantly plays it, those teasers need to be built into the first episode. Otherwise, Quibi needs a button to view a trailer from its buried dedicated show pages to the preview card most people interact with on the home screen. Otherwise, users may never discover what Quibi shows resonate with them and teach it which to show and make more of.

Anti-social video club

Quibi neglects all its second-screen potential. No screenshotting makes it tough to discuss shows elsewhere, yet there’s no built-in comments or messaging to discuss or spread them in-app. Pasting an episode link into Twitter doesn’t even display the show’s name in the preview box. Nor do shows have their own social accounts to follow to remind you to keep watching.

There’s no way for friends to follow what you’re watching or see your recommendations. No leaderboards of top shows. Certainly no time-stamped, live-stream style crowd annotations. No synced-up co-watching with friends, despite a lack of TV apps preventing you from watching with anyone else in person unless you crowd around one phone.

It all feels like Quibi figured advertising would be enough. It could run contests where winners get a Cameo-esque message or chat with their favorite stars. Quibi could let you share scenes with your face swapped onto actors’ heads, deepfake-style like Snapchat’s (confusingly named) Cameos feature. It could host in-app roundtables with the casts where users could submit questions. It’s like if Web 2.0 never happened.

TikTok, meanwhile, harnesses every conceivable social feature. Follow, Like, comment, message, go Live, duet, remix or download and share any video. It beckons viewers to participate in trending challenges.
