You assumed Damian had told them about you. Neither of you is outright affectionate (the industry wants you to be a hot single skater, and Damian was Damian), but you had assumed Damian would have at least told his family the bare minimum about you such as you figure skating professionally or even your existence. Turns out, he did not, and you found out in the most awkward dinner of your life.

"So, you aren't being paid off to cover his tracks?"

Jason asked. You had been invited to a dinner party after the others dogpiled on Damian to find out more about his secret relationship. Damian was still mentally cursing Tim. The rat snitched on him, and now he's stuck in this terrible situation.

Jason got kicked hard beneath the table by Damian, who was already annoyed he was forced to have a stupid dinner with his family to prove his relationship.

"I see on every recent social media post that says you are single."

Tim said. He spent the past 56 hours researching you until the words began to blur and the coffee ran out.

"I'm a private person. I guess you can say I don't kiss and tell."

You seemed amused, but Damian was screaming internally and glaring harshly at everyone around him.

Nobody else knew what to say. They already knew everything about you through Tim (well, besides the figure skating because Tim found that information irrelevant). This dinner was mostly to confirm you are real and that you do know Damian. This isn't some hallucination that the Batfamily has to figure out how to fix.

Colour them surprised when you actually showed up and lightly kissed Damian on the cheek. Jason had to give Dick twenty bucks with a scowl. He really thought there was zero chance Damian, Edgelord Supreme, would ever get a girlfriend.

You had no idea what to say because Damian prepared you already. There was nothing to say. You had to pick at your food and awkwardly talk about how long you've dated, which they already knew, and what your first date was like, which they also already knew. What can they say? They are the greatest detectives for a reason.

After the horrible dinner, you decided to take them all ice skating. Partially to calm your nerves and partially to see what they all have.

Jason, obviously, sucks at it, and Damian snickered every time he fell. You helped him as best you can, keeping him to the walls of the rink for support.

Dick was a little clumsy at first, but once he got it, he was a total show-off. He attempted figure skating moves but struggled with keeping control. You circled him and gave him tips, which he was surprised worked. You cheered for him and bonded over the overlap between gymnastics and figure skating. You were excited to find out he's a gymnast because you also do gymnastics on the side. You are a professional figure skater, so you are surprised there weren't more people asking for tricks from you.

Cass held your hand the entire time, which you were fine with. You saw how excited she was by the ice skating, so you offered to watch a figure skating movie when they got back to the manor, which she happily agreed to do. She had a feeling she's going to love you. You showed her a few beginner-friendly tricks, and helped her with her form. You'd love to spend more time with her.

"You are going to have to show me your moves after the movie."

Cass agreed happily. She was excited to see you again. She's already welcoming you into the family, and so was Dick as he slid in between both of you.

You giggled, more than happy with your little trio going on. Damian did warn you Dick is the family golden retriever, but you didn't consider it seriously until you met him.

"You're invited to our movie night too, Dick."

Dick winked and asked,

"Do you have a sister? We can double date."

You laughed and shook your head in amusement. You replied,

"Not in this lifetime, Dickie."

Bruce watched in the seats with Damian.

"She is not what I expected to be your type after Raven. When is her next competition?"

Damian seemed startled that he knew about the figure skating. Nobody else did except Tim. He told him,

"She'll be in Gotham. The competition is in a week."

Bruce nodded. He liked you. He liked the adoration that Damian couldn't keep off his face when he looked at you and the way you seemed to make him smile without even trying. He'll have to remember to bring Damian when he goes to the competition. He wants to see you in action.

He smiles softly as you laugh with Cass and Dick, Jason eventually joining the group after shuffling for a couple of minutes. You are perfect for the family.

The Titans didn't quite know what to do with this information.

Beast Boy was the loudest about his disbelief. The boy has zero filter, and he asked probably a million questions after Damian was caught sneaking you out one night, which Damian still hates because it woke up everybody and suddenly he had to show the whole team his girlfriend. He wanted to wait, but evidently, fate was not on his side.

Raven already knew. She was just thankful Damian can finally stop sneaking you in and out of their tower nightly. She was the one who put Beast Boy on a leash when it came to the thousands of questions he asked.

Starfire had a strong feeling Damian was hiding something. Dick taught her a thing or two about reading people, and Damian's baseline changed substantially. He was secretive about his phone, often vanished for seemingly no reason, and sometimes came home with lipstick on his lips that he had to buy make-up removal wipes for and keep the wipes on him at all times.

Blue Beetle was surprised anybody would date Damian. You were nice and asked questions about the scarab, and you both connected when you asked to see the scarab in action. It felt good to show his powers off to someone who could truly appreciate them. He liked you.

Cyborg also liked you. He researched ice skating terms to speak to you better. You seemed equally interested in him. You asked him questions about his backstory, and it kind of dissolved into Cyborg crying and mourning his life before becoming a cyborg. You held him as he cried and listened to him. He loved you like the others.

this is me trying to be as objective as possible. my biases are def gonna shine through though lmao. i'll only be addressing popular ships for the sake of my sanity. also these are just my opinions so i'd be curious to see everyone else's predictions

ryusae - already semi-canon. their relationship probably won't get a lot of focus but i wouldn't be surprised if we got a post-retirement timeskip at the end of the series and it's revealed they got married lmao

reonagi - what even is the point of episode nagi if we're not gonna have a dramatic confession in the rain that wouldn't tonally fit with the main series

kunigiri - canon bi kunigami + the whole princess/fallen hero thing. i'm only 95% certain the development of their relationship will be romantic, but their relationship is def gonna be a core part of their characters as the series goes on

kainess - in my eyes they're already semi-canon ("it's a beautiful blue" sounds a lot like "the moon is beautiful, isn't it?") but i don't think ness's feelings will ever be reciprocated. or even if they are i don't think they'll be endgame for the sake of both their character developments yk

kaisagi - they're my favs so that's why they're this high but if i'm being serious, they won't become anything more than semi-canon. at most, we're gonna have a short bit with kaiser watching isagi clips again and going "wait a minute am i actually gay" and he accepts, moves on, and it's never addressed again

bachisagi - they have a better chance than most other ships but i really don't think they'll be anything more than platonic.

rinsagi - they have pretty decent chances but def not high enough to warrant them getting higher on this list

nagisagi - the chances aren't zero but considering how much is going into reo & nagi's relationship + all the other relationships isagi has going on.... yeah they have no chance

Okay, so for IYH I understand where Ava is coming from because keeping secrets is a big way to end a relationship before it's even had the chance of beginning.

But at the same time, they've only been dating for 2 months right? I can't see myself telling someone that type of information that soon in a relationship.

Of course it's a lil different that Roman is a mafia boss and that's one of the most important things about him. Like, just by proximity Solana and the baby are in danger if they're seen with the man.

But, as for Solana, I think it's acceptable that she holds some of her past close to her chest because she's only known him for so long. She doesn't know how he'll react to bad news. She doesn't know if her past is a deal breaker, especially because she doesn't know who he is.

And let's be real. Based off of her past interactions with men, no matter how sweet/understanding/giving/patient Roman is, she has major trust issues when it comes to men. And should. That doesn't mean she can't trust Roman. But it's gonna take a while for her to work through that trauma response and open herself up to what he can offer.

These things take time to work themselves out. Obviously honesty is the best policy and we know I love me some communication. (Not that any of your characters know what that word means. ) But I'm also a realistic person and if you think that you know everything about somebody in 2 months, then you're sorely mistaken.

i really like calyx as a new villain because he seems to be the first villain so far that is actively seeking out wol's azem abilities. he also reminds me of 9S

i knew they were gonna bust out the porxie to heal lightning-itis and it was just as boring as i thought it was going to be. the horrible ravaging disease that supposedly killed og sphene...wiped away offscreen, in less than a second. i need them to commit to a fantasy disease that a flying pig can't cure, just so we can have some stakes back. otherwise what is even the point of having that sickness there in the first place.

zelenia is a giant robot there for ff9 nostalgia. having never played ff9, i don't care at all.

im on my hands and knees here. i am BEGGING the writers to just sprinkle in references to other ff titles in 8.0 and not make the entire msq an au fanfic of another title. we aren't doing anything with tural, which is the truly original xiv part of dawntrail. i am so sick of ff9 cyberpunk au oh my god

og sphene being alive all along just makes endless sphene's death have zero impact. the two of them are exactly the same. good for wuk lamat tho because now she has her greatest second chance to befriend and/or date sphene.

i think calyx is going to do some kind of battle royale amongst the alexandrians to determine who is fit to become an endless and who isn't, bc deliberately giving out just 5000 neo regulators is so obviously step one in weeding out undesirables. he clearly understands that he doesnt have infinite aether to sustain a constant growing population of aether-draining endless, so he's going to pick and choose which ones are worthy of being endless.

the real mystery that makes calyx compelling so far isn't his obvious eugenics scheme but rather how much he knows about what azem can do, which is something not even wol really knows. the giant question of why azem made a key that can travel between reflections before reflections were even a thing is still looming.

another question is: does calyx know about the unsundered world? the ancients and their civilization is probably close to what calyx wants to achieve, but the reason why amaurot and its immortal citizens could be sustained was because unsundered etheirys was insanely aether-rich. the ancients also had a very blase attitude towards death and were very willing to off themselves if they think it's time, thus returning their aether to the star, whereas alexandrians are utterly terrified of death and want to cut off the aether cycle entirely just so they can live forever.

calyx actually calls alexandria's shard the Ninth. aside from the scions and the ascians and zero, who even knows about the numerical naming system for the shards???? who told calyx this??? even if he knows that there's the source and 13 reflections, why would he think that his shard is specifically the ninth one?

on naming: calyx is our first alexandrian with a plant name, i think. a calyx of a flower supports the petals.

random misc thoughts: dataminers found azeyma's hairstyle and outfit in the files. we're seriously getting azeyma's hair before yugiri and hyth's hairstyles. the reason why i think azeyma of all npcs was chosen is def because of the azem connection, as tenuous as it is thanks to myths of the realm ruining her mystique, but it's insane to me still like i did not expect them to add azeyma's look to mogshop AT ALL.

wait oh my god you've unlocked something in my brain so the idea behind raven having the mask (in my mind and i'm sure a lot of other people's) is to hide her eyes when she uses the maiden power so the implication behind her not having it at all in the flashback is that she WASN'T MAIDEN YET.... i know of another person who theorizes that Summer's Final Mission is when Raven became Spring Maiden and.... that would be a supporting detail the idea that raven literally cannot bear to show her face most of the time because how badly it went is going to turn my brain into a moldy rotting party for worms though.

so, just bc i like to cover all my bases, there's still a non zero chance that her mask is with whoever / wherever the portals leads to However!! most of the time when raven is away from the camp she has it with her, and the fact they made a point of showing qrow's reaction--an apparent dislike, at that--to it def makes me lean towards her not having it at the time of the flashback.

(and also bc the alternative, that she already had it but they are hiding that fact for now would open a whole 'nother can of worms that i'm not yet prepared for)

like... if the spring maiden was not involved color me surprised lol feels like it's pretty given at this point, no matter who it is.

My mom actually called the rescue or so she said. She hasn't been a bitch and neither have I so idk why she would be lying. Liv is being a bitch about finding her a home to my mother. They will drag their ass on the floor until it's 4 years from now. I told my mom last night after hearing her phone call with them that the only way to make sure we don't have Riley forever is to light a fire under skye and livs ass. I said if you call the rescue it'll take a few weeks. If you tell them they need to find her a home in 3 weeks or the rescue is taking her, if they can find a home for her they will and if they can't then well she will be a good rescue.

I went shopping, I still haven't eaten... I'm about to make some food. I saw that girl with schizophrenia at her job. Sometimes I see her there. She came up to me happy to see me and complimented my new glasses, I said I miss my Ray-Bans bc I do... I would rather be wearing them. I asked her how she was, I've told her I hallucinate too through Snapchat cause I wanted someone to relate to and she's quite functional working a full time job. She's just emotional... which is why when she flirted with me and got my number it didn't work out. She was crying on the phone to me day one about how nice it was to be understood which is sad.... this was before I started hallucinating... just that I understood mental illness... but it went from zero to one hundred. She got my number wanted to hear my voice before bed and all that and I was like this is not how operate. We got to be good friends for a while and slowly and awkwardly become more..

It's sad cause she always wants to talk to me but once she realizes it isn't going anywhere she unadds me on Snapchat. Sees me in person and then readds me and it repeats.

Then I'll see her at her Job sometime in the next month and it'll repeat.

I got my brain scan from last year but you know i don't have a disc drive... so I got to figure out that portion of it to view it. I'm worried my brain will look the same as it does now but they had no comparison and they would have said global volume loss so I'm reminding myself if I had global volume loss now it would have been denoted in my results. I just got to figure out how to view it so I can compare my current ones to my old ones..

I got my thyriod bloodwork done. I'm hoping I'm less hyper.... I only pooped twice yesterday.... today it's been 3 times.... if my levels are normal I'm stopping metopolol bc Idk what my heart rate would be if I stopped but if the results are similar to last month I'll just stay on it.

5. What is the perfect environment for you to write in? Quiet. I really need to have like only white noise and whatever environmental sounds are in my area, but like sometimes in the summer our neighbors have these lil mini concerts with a live band and like it's great and all but i canNOT write in those conditions. i need it quiet with zero distractions. the only distraction allowed is miss kitty climbing into my lap to cuddle while i write. i also like having a cup of tea while i write. and i prefer to be in bed cause it's just generally more comfortable for me than sitting at a desk.

12. Is there a trope you haven’t written yet but really want to?

mhmmm that's a hard one. i feel like im always less focused on tropes as like 'oh i need to write x trope' and if there is something i do want to write that falls into that sort of fanfiction specific realm im usually more focused on like what kind of AUs i wanna write. there are like so many tropes out there and obviously tropes make up all the stories we write, i just don't think i've consciously set out to fill a whole lot of tropes per say. i've done the 'there's only one bed' trope and i've done a handful of different AUs.

i think the trope that ive always been the most fond of is enemies to lovers, and quite frankly i would consider Absolution to be that. im a fan of the arranged marriage trope, and i've got that. love a good pining fic and i'd say generally speaking my fics hit that pretty regularly. secret lovers def comes up... i've had the chance to do some battle couple things with Gate of Dreaming and there'll def be more chances with other fics... um... don't really like the idea of 'fake dating' for GaaLee

mhm yeah i guess the only thing i'd really wanna do i haven't done is like reincarnation and soulmate deconstruction.

20. What’s your favorite minor character you’ve written?

Assuming this is like minor character within the story itself and not the canon, since technically all the characters i focus on are supporting characters and some are even more minor than that.

so fave minor character i've written in a fic is probably... god this is hard cause it depends so much on the fic itself too. okay im gonna say i really enjoyed the Ame shinobi i wrote into TAoL when Temari's sick from the manacles Shinpiko has put on her. those characters were fun.

23. If you had to remix one of your own fics, which would it be and how would you remix it?

oh boy this is a hard one. like i've certainly thought about like doin a remix where i write a story from a different charactes' PoV, which i think would be fun and easy enough for like Flyweight Love, but i already have a sequel planned for that from Gaara's PoV which would include like flashbacks or references to the first fic

and i could see a remix of Kado being cute too. RtS would be fun, and i think probably provide the most interesting challenge since so much of what happened from Gaara's PoV was off-screen anyways.

and it would also be fun to like write something from someone's PoV that isn't gaara or lee. i have a lot of like lil behind the scenes one-shots for Absolution... but mhm i guess RtS really would be like the best one to do tbh. there's a lot of stuff there that could be really fun to explore from Gaara's PoV and it's def my most popular fic so i think people would enjoy it

Like I get it, sometimes a show you liked doesn't go in the direction you want but sometimes it's just nuanced and deals with complicated issues like forgiveness and healing and if you don't like that you can gtfo.

Also Anya lost her powers against her wishes and griped about not being able to rain bloody vengeance upon men for years. She went back to the job the first chance she had, harmed a bunch more people and her "redemption arc" was ONE episode. Xander and the rest of the Scoobies (and writers) seemed to think that was fine.

Realized I haven't gone into how Bitterbat reacts/gets revenge on Freebird…at least on this account SO lemme drop that here because he definitely has STRONG reactions to him.

Freebird is stationed in mainland America so he isn't a permanent resident of Decking City. He only really visits when there is hero business to take care of. But when there is word that Freebird is coming to the city, Bitterbat becomes way more territorial over Sweetheart.

He can read people's emotions like a book and Sweetheart has discomfort written all over her. She tells him she can deal with Freebird because yeah he's a pushy asshole but he isn't a complete monster and he eventually backs off but it's annoying every time.

And the guy has only become more assertive after Bitterbat showed up.

Bitterbat knows Sweetheart doesn't like missing a hero meeting but he tries to get her to call out when Freebird is in town. And if that doesn't work, he tries to figure ways to sneak in. And if that doesn't work, then he's always lurking somewhere nearby the place.

In the beginning, Sweetheart has def turned down having him accompany her because it's too risky but at a point she realizes how much anxiety she is beginning to get by just thinking about running into Freebird and she decides to pull the "Itty Bittybat in boobies" maneuver.

It works pretty well and helps her make it through the day when Freebird is around with the only draw back being how hard it is to keep Bitterbat from leaping out and attacking his face. It hasn't happened YET but the chances of Bitterbat snapping are low, never zero.

Her has certainly pulled a fair share of tricks on the bird man, like making him trip and fall or making something spill on him but it's always something to seem like a freak accident.

Another thing he does when Freebird is in town…is make sure Sweetheart leaves him with some "battlescars". Of course she makes sure to reel him back so he doesn't go hog wild but there's a bite here, a hickey there.

There's finer details I cannot get into because this is a sfw account but he makes sure she is absolutely covered in his scent so if she ever runs into Freebird, he might not know what it is he's sensing, but he def can tell something is "off" about her.

Because of how much more "aggressive" Bitterbat gets during battles when Freebird is in town, the two can lie and say it's just actual scars from them fighting. Speaking of their battles, they def get more risque.

It's nothing too explicit but those stolen kisses get a whole lot deeper. Like "Bitterbat makes sure the camera sees tongue" deeper It drives Freebird up a wall. Especially with how much Bitterbat loves to have his hands on Sweetheart during battles.

Of course, this leads to Freebird trying to talk Sweetheart into letting someone else handle Bitterbat because he claims that he seems to be "too much for her to handle" but Sweetheart stands firm that she is more than capable of dealing with him...because it's true tbh.

Does Bitterbat kick Freebird's ass at somepoint. AT LEAST twice with the first being him going easy on Freebird because he tried to step in during a battle between him and Sweetheart.

The way Decking works, heroes claim what villains are theirs. Heroes know their villains the best so they always are the ones sent or called when a villain they claimed pops up. The Decking Defense Force state it's because they are the most qualified to handle them...which is true.

Things are different in mainland America. Heroes tend to just deal with a villain they have run ins with but there's no paperwork to assign them, it's just "oh yeah that guy usually takes on that other guy".

And while it's not breaking the rules necessarily for a hero in Decking to jump into battle against an unassigned villain, it's often advised against if the designated hero doesn't have them marked down as "other capable heroes". So when Freebird tries to take Bitterbat, Bitterbat drops his weights and fucks him up JUST enough to make him know his place.

Bitterbat considers this fight to be his "warning" to Freebird because the guy could still walk away from it and he left his face quite in tact. Plus he was still going by the "script" he and Sweetheart vaguely have in their heads.

But the second fight they have…it's definitely an unscripted event. And while Freebird could walk away from the first battle with his tail between his legs-Bitterbat makes it his mission he crawls away from the second.

Sadly, Bitterbat cannot kill Freebird as he would basically be marked down as one of the biggest threats to America and that's a whole headache for Bitterbat and Sweetheart to deal with when they just wanna cuddle and kiss while binging movies. But maiming is def on the table.

whenever you decide to attend or visit chiyu and pareo before their practices, you decide to get them a gift before you go. usually it's jerky or maybe a clip, something that isn't that expensive. even if it's a fairly small thing (and the jerky isnt world-class...), both of them appreciate it a lot (chiyu doesnt like the flavor, but she is genuinely grateful for you buying this for her.) after all, your bright smile after handing the things you got for them is a sweet enough gift for the both of them

maybe you're in a band or a unit, or maybe you perform as a solo artist. when you visit galaxy to check any open slots, you have the small chance to encounter rokka or masuki. rokka may just be a normal day at work, or masuki's just bored and wants to hit the drums, but their whole day changes as soon as you see them in galaxy— the mood gets brighter and happier, as if you brought the sun down into the livehouse. they love listening to you and love your hugs a lot.

rei noticed it first— your sudden changes in demeanor when you're around with them. it happened as she saw you walking home with your other friends with a blank face or a simple smile, hiding away behind them.

it confused her at first and she got worried initially, thinking you're not alright and you're being forced to do this, but when you spotted her you had zero hesitation to approach her and happily greet her like you weren't just quietly standing behind your other friends.

admittedly your friends were quite shocked as well. they saw it for the first time with rei, and at some point they teased you for having a soft spot for her up until they saw you with any other RAS member and acting the same way you did with rei

everyone else in RAS soon followed and saw how you acted. they weren't expecting you to trust them and feel so open around them— they just thought you were usually like that.

(rokka and masuki probably knew first before rei even... this is If you're in a band/unit: they had backstage passes and you didnt notice them until you turned around.... rokka and masuki were Both confused for a bit and in disbelief? on you were talking so calmly and seriously since theyre Definitely used to your happy lucky smile self)

either way, nothing really changed between any of you. you're still having fun with RAS, RAS is having fun with you, and you're still friends with your friends, of course.

they all enjoy your company very much, and would never ask for anything else.

Something so cool about sadf is that all the misunderstanding and miscommunication and dragging their feet isn't frustrating at all, to me at least.

Romance stories that prolong the inevitable confession when it's clear both characters like each other so often do, frustration and irritation building up, because if they had just phrased this sentence a little differently, if they had just stayed to listen a little longer or maybe not at all, then they wouldn't be here.

But Dream and Georges problems aren't from mistakes and eavesdropped conversations, it's from two best friends terrified of ruining what they have for the chance of something more.

Here I can't say "they shouldn't have said that" it's "they should have said that" (that being I love you) but it's very understandable why they don't, so yeah, this is one of the only fics, or really any media, I've consumed of this kind without feeling frustrated, which is pretty cool.

not to reference dark times but regarding the whole ‘if sadf!george told sadf!dream he’s in love with him too they could get together’ comment people have made. well. it’s not AS easy as that. idk if i phrased it right any of the last times i talked about this but while it would certainly set things in motion sadf!george saying ‘no way omg im in love with you too’ wouldn’t be as straightforward as you might think because loving someone and having feelings for someone isn’t the same as getting into a romantic relationship with them especially when that SOMEONE is tied to every other aspect of your life in every way. sometimes it’s easier to say ‘i’m in love with you’ than it is to say ‘let’s risk it all’ and that’s something even sadf!dream is Genuinely afraid of. him thinking sadf!george wouldn’t want to date him anyway is definitely a big factor in all this, but he has his own past, insecurities, pain, experiences, etc that make him scared to be so reckless. he wants to be responsible about it, he doesn’t want to risk sadf!george

right now they’re both in this… “i love you so much i can’t lose you” stage and they need to reach “i love you so much losing you might be worth it” or some… other equivalent state. more confidence, more courage, more insanity, for instance. and yes they def need to know more about the depth of each other’s feelings. and that’s what you all have to look forward to :) these things don’t happen all at once, remember that ch8 takes place immediately after ch7 and spans what is essentially 1.5-2 days. not that much time elapsed since the catalyst (the date not date date)

and the thing is about sadf!dnf. it’s not that sadf!dream thinks there’s no way sadf!george has no more feelings for him per se. and it’s also not that sadf!george had zero inkling that dream could’ve had feelings for him either. at the end of the day they do know each other. BUT. it’s like. they don’t want to have that assumption. and they don’t want to face up to it without confirmation. and neither of them knew the extent of it all. and they didn’t want to believe it too deeply without concrete proof to back it up, etc etc etc. so when sadf!george pestered sadf!dream for the real reasons, he just wanted it to be said. but he didn’t see something that extreme coming, and his emotions got all jumbled up, and because he was operating on instinct, he didn’t plan his next step right, so sadf!dream doubled down on wanting to be free from his own feelings. something similar happened w sadf!dream continuously asking about sadf!george’s past feelings. it wasn’t so much that he had no idea whether george still liked him, it was more so he was suspicious but unsure how deep things ran, and he figured that even if sadf!george did still like him he likely did not want to pursue them in a relationship sense, which he wasn’t all that wrong about…

i know how hellish this is. just picking it apart a little bit is hell. but that’s how things can be sometimes. you might get it you might not. you might’ve lived it too you might not

I can't help but think you're being a bit too hard on Eleanor because of ship bias. I mean, why would you called her 'her worst self' and 'selfish' when she's always been one to throw stuff to get in heaven (even with the character development)? But suddenly she's being sappy and depending on someone who isn't Michael and the whole M/E fandom is at her throat. I'm as unconfortable as the next shipper with all the C/E scenes but is it really Eleanor and her characterization that's at fault?

Yes, of course I am biased (to a certain degree). When the show caters to my preferences, I’m more docile and much less likely to nitpick and complain, when it doesn’t and it drops the ball to boot, I get grumpy. So I’m your garden variety fan, basically. But I don’t believe I’m “at Eleanor’s throat”. Her and Chidi being together doesn’t make me uncomfortable bc it’s her and Chidi and not her and Michael (+ I often see things popping up in the C/E dynamic that can have potentially interesting implications for Michael’s development and for M/E, too. Generally speaking, the three of them make up a curious whole for me).

I know the chances of (2-sided) M/E happening are somewhere btw zero and never, so I’m not exactly eyeballing C/E as some kind of obstacle to my personal shipper nirvana, jumping at any chance to “punish” Eleanor for choosing the “wrong” partner. But I do feel uncomfortable with the way the C/E romance is written this season. “They are sidelining my no. 1 dynamic”, while frustrating, is not the reason for this, it’s not why I’m not crazy about Eleanor’s behavior and Chidi’s OOC-ness.

Eleanor + character development always resulted in stuff like her being emotional and vulnerable w/o getting aggressive and demanding, her accepting it when Chidi turned her down w/ dignity despite feeling heartbroken, and her being considerate of others to the point of volunteering to go to the Bad Place to save them. This is where she was a year ago and the year before that at the end of each season. This is not where she is now. I’m not saying being selfish and throwing stuff is not in her character make up or her problem-solving toolbox. Her overcoming these impulses, however, is the very point of her character development (made blindingly obvious last season when she lied about passing the Judge’s test and refused to go through the portal to TGP). What we have (currently! so it can change any time) in S3 is the opposite (see the in-your-face door to TGP that won’t open for her), it’s her completely giving in to these impulses to the point of seriously endangering everyone, meaning that she has, in fact, regressed. I suspect it is a point the show is trying to make but we’ll have to wait and see.

In “Janets”, all Janet asks is that they stay put until she and Michael deal w/ accounting. Eleanor works herself into a state over Chidi not opening up to her on command, putting Janet through hell and almost erasing her friends from existence while her own self is also disintegrating. Despite the serious consequences, this harmful behavior carries right over into the next ep where all Michael asks is that they lay low bc folks in TGP are so rule obsessed, they can send all of them right back to TBP. Eleanor immediately smashes stuff at the door to TGP bc it doesn’t open up for her when she demands it. It’s her bullying of Chidi from the previous ep all over again, only in a vase-meets-door form. Even Chidi has to be all about her now as he magically turns into a grossly idealized version of himself (see in S2 how she rejected a similar “fake Chidi”), spending the entire ep trying to prevent her from blowing up again while the rest of the team is cleaning up the mess in the mail room and Michael is away trying to fix the calculation issue. Despite the crazy-intense circumstances, everybody is trying to do something for somebody else except her - she is still hyper-focused on herself and it stands out to me bc this is a version of her I’ve never seen before and it’s def not the best one.

Again, it’s not because she is w/ Chidi but the issues become especially apparent within that dynamic since the second Michael showed her those memories, she just latched onto Chidi, expecting him to fill the void left by her screwed up upbringing that’s been freshly dredged up thanks to her not-dead mother. They made her lurch from “I’m incapable of love” to “I’m madly in love and nothing else matters”, hand-waving determinism while failing to provide any other reason why these 2 are suddenly together again. They are trying to play it as romantic/funny but it’s not romantic when someone’s whole identity has to be propped up by another person and it’s not funny how that other person has to repress his own identity/issues to be able to do this. It’s a suffocating, unsustainable interplay. Or if it’s meant to be interpreted as “love cures mental illness and erases every character flaw in 5 minutes, so you can finally be the proper romantic partner”, then it’s even worse. You don’t have to be a shipper of another ship or look too deep into this story to see these (imo) legitimate problems (but it helps, yes, since it’s natural to be more critical of sth you’re not emotionally invested in and gloss over stuff to preserve the fun potential when it’s your OTP or sth, I do give you that).

Eleanor having to coerce love and attention out of Chidi will never be cute, either, or proof that those feelings were there all along. People pushed some quotes from WJH into my face about how Chidi calms down bc he finally has what he always wanted - interesting choice of words, btw, given the pin Michael gave Eleanor - but 1) an actor’s opinion will not automatically replace my own (no, not even if it’s Ted’s or some other big fave’s) and 2) how exactly were we supposed to glean that Chidi wanted to be with her so much in this reboot? Was it when he went steady w/ another woman despite Eleanor being an option all along? was it when he refused to give private lessons to her bc he was just too busy? or was it when he - despite witnessing her meltdown - sent her packing bc they already had enough material for his study? For some reason the writers missed every opportunity to build this up properly and make this extremely syrupy display stick, but I’ve already said everything about that in another post.

This whole idea of “he felt this way all along, he just didn’t actually show it, so we can skip actual development” is a lazy, corner-cutting approach which reminds me of the worst kind of fanservice attempts I’ve had the misfortune of experiencing with several of my favorite shows recently. I have very low tolerance for that stuff now bc it never ends well. I did not expect to see this particular brand on this particular show, but here we are, I guess. Or if it’s a case of creative exhaustion/boredom where this billion times rebooted couple is concerned, then maybe it’s time to park them and give a not yet over-explored dynamic some attention instead to keep things fresh and fluid as opposed to stale and forced - again, not an unreasonable request, even if it comes from someone who is invested in another dynamic, given the lack of care that was apparently put into developing C/E this season.

I don’t like not liking things on this show (and it’s not Eleanor I don’t like, it’s the way they deconstructed her in order to write her back into a relationship as if she couldn’t exist w/o it), and I am sorry if I disappointed or offended bc it was not my intention. I hope they flip things or introduce a new angle that will make me re-evaluate. I am always open to that whenever new material arrives and I honestly hope they will make me eat my words soon. I will merrily absorb the suckerpuches. But for now, this is my opinion and “you just don’t like that she is not with your fave” - while a natural factor - is not the main reason why I made my comments.
