Thanks to Google maps and my endless search for weird hidden tiny museums throughout Japan, I came upon the humble 松下美術館 Matsushita Art Museum in Kirishima, Kagoshima. I was honestly blown away by what they had: a huge collection of Satsuma ware pottery, a couple of of works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Kuroda Seiki, Tsuguharu Foujita, and Picasso (including some plates that he made). Kirishima Shrine, deep in the Kagoshima mountains, has been destroyed by volcanoes constantly since the 14th century and the current structure was built in 1715. This site is believed to be where the grandson of Amaterasu (the sun goddess that created Japan by spinning a diamond-encrusted trident) dropped from the heavens to rule earth. He, Ninigi no Mikoto, brought with him a sword, a mirror, and a gem. Aji no Roppaku (@roppaku689 ) has been humbly tucked away in Kagoshima City's Tenmonkan area since 1991 and is home to the very best tonkatsu pork cutlet that I've ever had in my life. Kagoshima is famous for its Kurobuta black pork, which is a mix of pigs that came from Amami and Okinawa 400 or so years ago and Berkshire pigs from England. The name "Roppaku" is a reference to the six white markings on their four limbs, snout and tail and the flavor of the free-range pork is sweet. This restaurant offers the option between the Roppaku pork and Chami-ton pork, which is a variety of pork that is fed mostly Kagoshima sweet potatoes and then fed tea 2 months before processing. Kareigawa Station on the Hisatsu Line is the oldest operating train station in Kagoshima Prefecture. 🚃 Located in the mountains of Kirishima City, this wooden station started operation in 1903 and sells bento boxes for train otaku and local riders every Saturday and Sunday. Afterwards, we took at dip at @kanmuridake_onsen in Ichikikushikino and it was spectacular. Kumaso no Ana cave in the mountains of Kirishima, (Kagoshima Prefecture) was home to an ancient tribe of people called the Kumaso. Sometime around 100 AD, while these people were living in southern Kyushu, they neglected to send the rice tribute to Emperor Keiko, who was living in modern-day Nara Prefecture (Yamato). Whether it was because they couldn't grow enough or because the trip to deliver it was too arduous, it didn't happen and the disgraced emperor sent his son, Ousu, to get revenge. When Ousu arrived, 55 tribes of southern Kyushu were meeting in this cave and having a banquet, so he decided to dress up like a woman and lure their leader, Kawakami Takeru, to a private cavern. That he did and, in private, Ousu stabbed him and told him who he was. When the tribal leaders rushed in to attack Ousu, Kawakami told them to not attack, that it was righteous for him to come kill him, and to make sure that he returns safely to his father. He also gave Ousu his name (he became Yamato Takeru)and, as he was dying, proclaimed that the Kumaso tribe was dissolved. Only part of the cave is accessible after a rockfall nowadays and the inside was painted in 1990 by Sakurajima artist Hagihara Sadayuki. #tbt to the closing ceremony of the #kagofancreator program and this lovely performance by Kagoshima's own @koito_sumiyoshi Also, props to @bachandpicasso for their pistachio cheesecake vending machine outside the bakery (for when you need a cheesecake at 4AM). Also, their Florentines made with Kikaijima flat beans and sesame were very lovely. Other notable Kagoshima adventures include finally making it to the Kagoshima Art Museum and seeing Dali's The Triangular Hour in person. I recreated this with cut out tiny pieces of magazines in high school and it was wild to see in up-close. Lastly, in Aira, we stopped at this random burger place called Dante that specialized in jaw-meat burgers and they had a framed picture of Tupac on the wall. Seiko found four-leaf clovers outside with random little girls. #throwback to checking out the soothing Ogawa Falls 雄川の滝 on Kagoshima's Osumi Peninsula. The 60 meter wide falls have some truly beautiful rock formations and the pool of water at the bottom is bright green, even on rainy days like this one. It's a bit tricky to get to the bottom of the falls from the hydroelectric power plant/observatory up top, but the windy trip across the Takimiohashi Bridge is so worth it. Tonkatsu とんかつ竹亭 Taketei in Kanoya City has been serving up Kagoshima black pork cutlets for more than 50 years. The volume is a lot and everything was less than 1000 yen! Very tasty and highly recommended if you want to experience a very unique Kagoshima dining experience.
