There was this one private. A good kid, really. Reminded him of his younger sister. He held his hand as he died, watching as the combat medic tried their best to keep him alive. Kaine was the last person that he spoke to, the last face that he saw. Even as the private died, he was smiling. He was smiling and laughing, despite the way that it hurt, because he'd, "never gotten to see the big, scary lieutenant look so worried over little old me."

When he got back to base, Kaine put in the request to be the one to tell the private's family. Price wasn't sure, but Kaine made the case that he knew their son's last words. He was allowed to go.

Telling that mother and father that their only child had died was horrible. He handed over what he had to as they cried. He tried not to think of his own parents as the mother collapsed into her husband, as the father cried for his lost boy. Kaine tried not to think of his own daughter, of the anguish that would overtake him if he was the one getting this news broken to him.

Kaine gave his condolences, but it was clear that he wasn't wanted there, so he got in his car and left. He went back to his apartment and drank himself silly. And he cried.

Those are the people he hurt the most. Sure, he may not have been the one to kill their son, but he was the one that told them that their lives would never be the same. That the sweet, bright-eyed kid that they raised would never be coming home outside of the wooden box he was buried in. Their son would never laugh again, would never smile at anyone again. His eyes would forever be glassed over, no longer shining with mischief and joy.

Sometimes, the sound of that pained laughter rings through Kaine's head. Every time he turns around, though, his heart jumping into his throat, it's someone else. Some other private, bright eyed and full of life. But it's never that private. Never those people's son.

Does he regret telling them? Absolutely not.

Does he regret the kid's death? Every day of his life.

SEASON FOUR OF THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY DESTROYED ME

Here's my thoughts:

The entirety of the last season was an on-going dogfight between my mental health and my daddy issues. Sadly, Steve Blackman and Co. made sure my daddy issues won.

I will never recover from the moral of "if your life sucks its completely your fault, and you should have never been born"

And, additionally, I think it's wild that, after over 6 years of filming and directing and bringing to life a wonderful comic book, the writers and directors thought "hey, lets create the least satisfying finale since Game of Thrones. Make sure it has one of the most grave cases of character assassination in recent media. You know. For fun."

Steve Blackman really thought he ate.

No, seriously. I'm a GOT fan and even our finale was better than this.

As I’m trying to come to terms with whatever the fuck that was, I’ve decided that:

Seasons 1 and 2 are peak. Absolute masterpieces. Canon.

Season 3 can be taken or left. Has its moments, but overall not as good as the first two. Canon, but only if you want it to be.

Season 4 is a fucking crack fic written at 2am that the author rereads at a later date and decides to delete. Absolutely not canon.

Ok but more on kaine being protective of Ben. Hopefully he reams Maxine out for her heinous bullshit (bonus if she gets the mark of kaine).

I was also (prior to WOS) hoping that he would storm limbo embassy for his baby brother. (He would absolutely fight Madelyn solo. I’m not sure he would win but still)

I couldn't see him attempting to storm the limbo embassy tbh. Ben was pretty well taken care of there so i don't think he'd be all that concerned with it. Sure, Ben didn't like it, but he was safe and couldn't harm himself or anyone else so not Kaine's problem.

He would fight literally anyone though. Definitely picking fights he wouldnt win for Ben. Has before, will do again.

He doesn't know what went down in Dark Web, and if he did i'm sure he would have words. Maybe some light stabbing, but the problem resolved itself so i imagine thats enough. He 100% would fight Madelyn solo but i don't think he'd find reason to.

I can however, absolutley see him mark-of-kaineing the fuck out of Maxine Danger. I would not be suprised in the slightest if he jumped on the Beyond corperration revenge train. If he became the fucking conductor. Hell, hes probably going off the rails and far ahead of whatever the others are on. Hes not first in line but it doesnt matter cause hes just hopping the till.

LITERALLY

I understand that after being stuck with one person for 7 years, you'd form some type of comradery with them, but Lila is not Five's type. From what Five says about her and the flashbacks in the apocalypse, Dolores was gentle, caring, and loving. In season one, when five is tracking the eye technician, the way he talks to dolores conveys her worry. He says, "No, I'm not drunk. I'm working." Lila would not give two shits if he was drunk on the job. Dolores is patient with him, but also understands him in a way Lila never will, because he made up her personality so that someone could understand him.

Not only is Five too mature to be acting so selfishly (mainly because up until this point, he has only been worried about saving his family, saving the world is just a side effect. Oh, and he's also like 60 and is a decent person. No way he gets a kick out of this), but also, does he even like her that much?

And again, let's talk about the "I like my women a little less likely to kill me in my sleep" line from season 3?

Bring that back, and someone, anyone, throw the 'toxic jealous boyfriend' Five in the garbage.

correction: i love liar characters and also Legacy of Kain, the liar universe. a country so fucked up by lies that pointing to this or that character and their lines of lying dialogue individually is like playing whack-a-mole and a total waste of time. even the honest characters are liars by association by virtue of yapping forward every goddamn untruth they hear, even if it is beyond their power to speak truth and the only way not to lie is never speak again
