Dear Sarah, Have you ever been to KALAFINA live? Unfortunately, I have never been to Japan itself :(

Hello there lovely anon!

Yes, I have but not as often as I would have liked to unfortunately. The first time I saw them in person was back in 2012 when they were a guest act at Animagic in Germany. I never considered it a “Kalafina Live” experience but it was fun nonetheless. In 2014, Kalafina appeared at another convention in Europe (Japan Expo) so obviously, I was there for that as well. Yet again, it wasn’t a proper live experience for me but it was neat.

I attended my first REAL live in Japan in early 2016 (FOTW Special Final Day 1&2) and it was honestly a life-changing moment for me. Nothing compares to seeing them live in a proper show and not just as a short gig. I wish I had gotten the opportunity to go to any of their 2017 events/lives but that year was really busy for me since I had just started a new job. Truth is, it is one of my biggest regrets in life. if I had known it would basically be their final year of activities, I would have found a way to make it work.

At least I made it to their 10th Anniversary Live in 2018, I am forever grateful for that experience and will treasure it until the day I die. 

Their disbandment was a real wake-up call for me. I didn’t want to have any further regrets so from that moment onwards, I swore to myself that I would attend as many of their solo lives as possible. Thankfully, that new job I had gotten in 2017 gave me the financial stability to be able to travel on a more or less regular basis. As a result, I went to quite a few lives in 2018 and 2019 but then the pandemic happened and I was once again stuck here without a way to see them live *sobs* I am just glad that live stream options are a thing now, they have been a real game changer. But as much as I appreciate those streams, it’s just not the same as actually being there at the venue.

I still can’t believe that I will be seeing Wakana live in Japan this Christmas. It came at a very high price but I just couldn’t wait any longer.

I hope you will be able to travel to Japan soon. I have faith that Kalafina will return one day so let’s all be sure to work hard so when that day finally comes, we will be ready for it!

A reflection upon the 10th Anniversary Live

So, of course there’s been a ton of news since the live, so I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. The 10th, of course, was the longest of the lives Kalafina put on, with the most songs almost all voted for by us, the fans. This won’t be easy, and I’m honestly crying right now.

Now, a few people have said about how it didn’t feel like a huge celebration, as you’d kind of expect for such a huge anniversary event, but more like a farewell. In retrospect, that’s exactly what it was, and that’s for a good reason. I suspect that the lack of over the top fanfares and the like is, in part, due to Kajiura as well. We knew already that her departure was rumoured to be coming before the live, a fact which is now confirmed, and it’s also well known that she liked lives where it was much more focused towards the music and less towards spectacle and flair.

She was at the live, if various reports of her being seen are to be believed, so I think it’s almost certain now that the way the performance went was fully intentional and done to respect Kajiura’s vision and ideals right until the end. Of course, this could just be them continuing on with the same stylistics that’ve been reported from previous anniversary lives, but I think in this case it had even bigger meaning and importance. It was a full circle connection right back to where they started, just the three girls standing on stage singing, the only real difference being the number of the accompanying musicians and the size of the venue. A fitting conclusion, honestly.

Whilst it would’ve been an extra addition to have more MCs and discussion from the girls as with practically any other live, they passed it off as wanting to sing more and talk less, which is even more poignant now.

There weren’t any announcements, simply because there was nothing to announce. Considering how Keiko and Wakana were during the short MCs at the end, I do wonder if they cut back on those for the girls’ sake as well, the more direct interaction and talking they had to do, the more chance they had of breaking down. Keiko clearly had trouble saying what she did during her MC near the end, and Wakana couldn’t hold it in nearer the end. Honestly I’m surprised they held it together as well as they could.

As for the setlist, I think it’s even more clear now why it was done as it was. They set it up as simply a celebration for their career and output so far, but really, it was a final reach out to the fans to hear what they wished to hear the most, and to do as many of those songs as was possible. In the end, the live was giving the fans one last chance to hear the songs that they wanted to hear, as per request. They were giving Kajiura one last performance in the style of her own vision. And most importantly the girls just wanted to sing together. One last time, together, for as long as possible. And frankly, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Thank you, Keiko, Wakana, Hikaru. I love you so, so much. Thank you.

More good music for background/productivity, especially for the early daylight part of an all-nighter. 

Just thinking about how I love Kajiura Yuki’s music and her bands (Kalafina, Fiction Junction, See Saw, etc.) because the tone is so haunting and melancholy but also hopeful, and how different their music sounds.  Then Kalafina introduced their band members, giving several musicians time for short solos: pianist, flutist, accordion player, violinist, etc.  I remembered Sideways saying something about how most band music hasn’t changed for a long time because it’s mostly just “drummer, guitarists, vocalist” combos.  Kalafina sounds so different and I love it. *.*

THE BEST Blue Day 2015

I think many of us agree that the Blue and Red Day outfits of all the girls are amazing. That being said, Wakana looks great on this dress. The blue/black combination, the shiny fabric, the golden embroideries, the belt, the shiny stones, the big buttons... there are just so many details here that make this dress so startling... The uneven skirt looks really cool and since Wakana’s shoulders/collarbones are one of my favourite features of hers, the uncovered shoulder is a plus... The jacket is really beautiful too, although I’m not quite sure about the sleeves... oh, well... trifles...

9+ONE 2017

In my dreams’ goods, there’s a Kalafina music box, with a little Ballerina-Wakana spinning around wearing this. The colours look great, and now that I think about it, the dress design with all those gold joints, reminds me a lot of the “kintsugi“ thing, which I find absolutely cool and, together with the tulle skirt, makes her look much more as a beautiful porcelain figure and makes me want the music box with ballerina-Wakana even more XD She looks beatuful with her hair tied back.

White, good. Long skirt, good. Hair tied back, good. Wakana’s figure looks amazing here, the golden embroidery is amazing and all those who got the chance to see this live, say that the camera doesn’t do it justice. If I like it so much even if I didn’t had  the chance to see it in its maximum splendor, then this really deserves a place among my favourites.

Going through some of the lives to see this dresses made me feel quite nostalgic... Yet I’m happy to know that right know, Wakana is in the middle of her tour, and there are some lucky people seeing her performing and shining on the stage as she usually does. I hope it keeps going well and some more pictures of her outfits come out after the tour is done... :D

Kalafina Live Review - 10th Anniversary

Finally it’s available and I watched the whole 10th Anniversary Live (again and again), so I thought I’d give a review on it. Here is my original Live Report -> click. My opinions didn’t really change much, though, so I’ll be repeating myself here and there :p Here we go!

Ring your bell ~ in the silence

I love that intro, especially with those flags opening

other than that, boring entrance -> the 9+ONE intro would have PERFECT for that occasion

However, I like the performance, surely one of their best, I love their bright smiles and movements

 BUT it gave me reminder of why I don’t like this song: the final “ring your bell”s, Wakana always makes me cringe

Quick opinion: I really came to hate Keiko’s dress. Not the colors or the golden/black pattern, that’s pretty cool: it’s those lace shoulder pads and the leather corsage. They make her chest area look super bulky and the chest part of the dress is not form-fitting at all. She has such a beautiful body but this dress just doesn’t support it.

But even I have to say, I have a lot of fun watching them perform, they move around, interact with the audience, it’s lovely and more carefree

I realized for the first time that the Strings are actually plucking their instruments lol I thought it was a background sound by the manipulator

I barely hear Hikaru in the chorus, is she singing high or low? xD

Keiko is the best here, so deep and dramatic!

Booooring stage show. No movements by the girls is one thing, but no special light show or anything? They could have been so creative with this dark piece..

Quick opinion: all the performances where I criticise the lack of creativity, movement etc. look actually great on the DVD, because we have the cameras. Changing angles, focus on each girl, their faces, the audience and the band give variety and it makes it look a lot more interesting. But sitting in the actual audience is absolutely tiring, because there is just nothing happening on stage. It’s just like you listen to a CD, especially if you had a seat in the far back and could only rely on the screen. Such a shame and waste.

Quick opinion: almost all songs by now have been completely or partly illuminated in blue light. Uncreative? Yes.

Hikaru again sounds strange and shouting, she definitely was edited

Another big highlight, one of the best performances Kalafina ever did

Actually a nice, refreshing intro by the accordion, but I personally find it kinda dominant throughout the song, which was a bit distracting and which I didn’t really feel in the actual live

ARIA

Hikaru sings lower and I like it a lot, although they definitely enhanced her voice to sound a bit “prettier”

she did such an emotional and sad performance, you could see that is not struggling as hard as e.g. in Red Day

Sprinter

Quick opinion: It’s like they only have red, white and green filters, all while the light technician’s finger is apparently stuck on the blue light button. This is BUDOKAN! This is ALL you can deliver?!

I honestly wonder why this song made it into the setlist. Hyakka Ryouran sure, being their most recent single, but why this B-side song (and e.g. why not Tombo?). Since fans couldn’t vote for it, it makes me think that the girls just really love this song and wanted it included in their last recorded live performance.

Wakana is simply perfect, Hikaru... well... she’s there. Where has her “neverending” voice gone to?

Where is the second violin dude? Toilet break?

This song becomes so much better when the Strings join in the last part

It took me years to realize that they sing “down to zero we go”, however Hikaru sounds suuuper strange singing that line

those band solos are the best thing of the whole concert, honestly I love them so hard

I feel I should take that blue spotlights to a date by now, because I have spent more time with them today than with my boyfriend

Quick opinion: I am not the biggest fan of those white “wedding” dresses. While their “final” version is pretty cool, I don’t like the veils, simply because they serve no purpose, especially since they’ll be thrown away immediately afterwards.

this doesn’t have many live recordings I think, so I am really glad that Alleluia made it as the last and most popular song of the night

definitely a marvellous farewell song for Keiko

- Why is the manipulator celebrated to heavily? Is he particularly popular or something? XD

- Ehm, Wakana’s dress are actually pants? Do I have that correct? XD

- They should have thrown in “snow falling” as a surprise encore, just for the joke

+ the musicians brought in so much variety and creativity even in highly overplayed songs, they made this truly a special concert

+ very good camera work, some great and cute shots and not so many cuts like in 9+ONE for example

- apparently an intern did the lighting here, I can’t explain this amateur work otherwise

- it’s a pity that there wasn’t any extra content included like some kind of Making Of or something on the Commemoration Lives. Sure, they reserved it for the movie, but still, at least something would have been nice

I really love this Live, although I had a lot of criticism. Kalafina delivered and they gave some of their best performances of their career. It was worth it all and it’s simply sad that this is their last concert. They deserved better treatment for this and it should have been even more special, with more effort and creativity by the staff/the agency.

Not really an ask, but I wanted to wish you a happy new year, and use this occasion to thank you for everything you're doing for the fandom.

In 2023, I regained in motivation to truly support the girls and YK, until then I stayed in the shadow but I still followed them from appart and listened to the music casually, but when I found your blog and saw that the international fandom was active, and that it was possible for me too to engage more with the artists, I finally found my full motivation again.

Ultimately, I even decided to go to the Kajifes and planned my solo trip to Japan, you also helped me by answering some of doubts back then, maybe without you I wouldn't have gone, and truly, that trip and those concerts were a life changing experience.

I'm also working hard on my Japanese to hopefully enjoy the future events even more!

So really, thank you so much for everything! 🥰 I did saw you at the Kajifes but I didn't want to bother you, I totally understand how uncomfortable that can be and I'm also not the best at social interactions 🤭 but I really wanted you to know that your work here is priceless to me!

Thank you so much for this kind and heartfelt message. It means the world to me that my blog helped you find motivation again. For many years, I followed Kalafina without ever having the resources, know-how or courage to support them in a more profound manner. The truth is, I have many regrets from that time so ever since their disbandment, it almost feels like I have to make up for all the things I missed out on. And I want others to know that despite many hurdles, it is not impossible for overseas fans to become more involved. Whenever I struggle with something, I try to share it on my blog so fellow fans have it at least a tiny bit easier. And of course I also make sure to talk a lot about all the positive experiences so you can rest assured that ultimately, it is worth all the trouble.

Awww, sorry we missed each other😔 But I will admit that I am quite grateful that only a couple of people came up to me because I was definitely super overwhelmed by the crowds and all the noise🙈. Those who did end up saying "hi" or who happened to be around me can probably attest to the fact that I was a wreck🙃I don't even recall it being that bad for the Kalafina 10th Anniversary live but I guess a lot of time has passed since then.

It's late and I only have a phone so all I'll say is it was fucking beautiful, the girls sounded great, holy shit Serenato/Kantankatan/lirica/Yane no Mukou ni/Kimi ga Hikari ni Kaete Iku/Alleluia/ARIA/Sprinter/Symphonia all performed and I spent too much money on merch and a lot of the concert unable to see through my own tears.
