(Yes, Kalique is definitely flirting. Yes, Jupiter is horrified and in disbelief at the very thought. And maybe a tiny bit flattered.)

Summary: While staying on Cerise, Jupiter becomes Kalique's newest obsession. She wonders what's in it for Kalique.

Have you ever thought of sorting Jupiter Ascending ?

I'd only given thought to Jupiter's sorting, and I think she's a Double Lion. I considered Badger Lion (with an universal Badger primary) briefly, but ended up discarding it; there's just something about her that reminds me of other Lions that feel the constrain of a Badger/Loyalist environment, even burning a bit and mistrustring themselves because of it.

And just... the key moment of her character, and the film, is so beautifully Idealistic to me. She decides to not only sacrifice herself (which is a pretty extended hero trait) but HER ENTIRE FAMILY to save the Earth. I don't think I've ever admired a character as much as I did Jupiter in this moment.

So yeah, I think Double Lion; she seems to work on gut feeling more than by taking in external factors, and is quite rash and impulsive. This woman doesn't plan things through lol.

As for the rest of the characters: I'm only now thinking about Caine, and it's been a while since I watched the film, but my gut says Snake Badger. He's lonely and craves to belong, finding himself in relation to Jupiter, and he's style reminds me of a bookkeeper Badger. I wouldn't completely rule out Badger primary, but his devotion to Jupiter feels very Snake-y and singular, even if he tried to find something like that in a larger group before.

Of the Abrasax children... I think Kalique could be a Snake secondary; charming, rolls with the punches, presents herself as the situation requires, a little theatrical. I'm between Snake and Bird for her primary, leaning towards more towards the latter.

Titus is the only one for whom I wouldn't rule out a Bird secondary (the people of this film could hardly plan even a birthday party lmao). Maybe Snake primary, he had that ~hedonistic vibe.

Balem... I'd say Lion secondary? Rash, impulsive, a hothead. I'm leaning towards Snake Lion, with how much killing his mother (allegedly because she asked him to) disturbed him.

Then there's Seraphi, their mother and Jupiter's "former" incarnation. She's pretty much the mystery of the whole film, and I feel I could argue any primary for her, although I lean towards an internal one, and Lion more likely than Snake. I don't think she was an improvisational secondary like Jupiter herself, thought. I'm thinking Badger secondary? With both courtier and bookkeeper skills.

The Temptation of Jupiter

So I was thinking about Jupiter Ascending again, as one does, and about the folklore and fairy tale motifs that people have pointed out before. But then I realized there’s another set of possible parallels I haven’t seen discussed-- between the three “offers” she receives from the three Abrasax siblings and the three temptations of Jesus. 

So first we have Kalique, who, in order to maintain her own status quo, offers Jupiter the chance to step into her mother’s place-- to rule, mirroring Satan offering Jesus all the kingdoms of the world.

Secondly, we have Titus, who tempts her with the idea that she’ll be able to stop the Harvest if she takes up her power alongside him. This one mirrors Satan daring Jesus to demonstrate his own power by jumping off the temple and relying on angelic intervention. Notably, this is the only one she falls for.

And lastly, we have Balem, who tempts Jupiter with survival (for herself and her family), reflecting the devil offering Jesus food to break the near-starvation he was in at the end of his fast.

The narrative structure of the Chosen One proving to the audience that they are worthy by rejecting offers to abuse their power or position is not uncommon, but I thought it was fun to look at it through this lens and how the Wachowski siblings played with the 3-temptation arc. Jesus’s resistance is made possible, it seems, through his supernatural nature and superior knowledge of scripture. Jupiter’s is based on her sense of everyday common decency. In essence, they used it in the opposite way from the Bible writers. The gospel narrative is trying to show Jesus to be special enough to be worthy; Jupiter, taken together with such lines as telling Balem that his mother’s problem was never having scrubbed a toilet, is written to be ordinary enough to be worthy.
