ROUND ONE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amaterasu
Pit: Aw, look at the cute puppy! Can I pet her? Palutena: Pit, don't! That's Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun! Pit: I thought the god of the sun was Pyrrhon? Viridi: Pyrrhon?! You think PYRRHON is the god of the sun?! Palutena: Many different cultures have different gods for the same thing. Sometimes, it's the same god with different names, but that isn't the case with Ammy. Amaterasu had previously died in a battle with the dreaded Orochi, but when Orochi was unsealed many years later, she was revived by Sakuya to defend Kamiki Village and defeat Orochi once more! Pit: Wow... She sounds like an amazing goddess! I'm sorry to have wronged you so, o divine spirit of the sun! Palutena: My, switching gods, are we? Are you asking her for the power of flight now? Pit: N-Not at all, Lady Palutena! Viridi: Pit, look out for Amaterasu's brush arts! The Power Slash art may seem simple, but when it's activated, it can send anyone flying! Don't get too careless!
Metal Sonic
Pit: Sonic? Is that you? Palutena: Very close, Pit. That's Metal Sonic! An evil robot clone of Sonic made by the evil Dr. Eggman! Although, lately it's begun to hate Eggman as much as he does Sonic... Viridi: Yeah, but he always gets reprogrammed back to normal in the end. Pit: So, if he's Sonic's clone, then does that mean he's Sonic's equal? That means... I know everything he's going to do! Palutena: Strange, isn't it? Although, one thing that's different is his V. Maximum Overdrive move, where he removes his limits to rocket in any direction. Try not to expect TOO much of the same, okay?

when i was younger i'd never played okami, but we DID have okamiden on the DS, and i loved it so much, i played that game to death.
recently i got okami on my switch, and just started playing yesterday. when the village got brought back, and i started walking back down the hill from sakuya's tree? i knew that path. when i got to the fork in the road, i just KNEW i was going to have to go up the other hill and draw the sun. and when i did, and the cutscene happened, and kamiki village came back to life?
it felt like coming home.

@bunnywabbit2 didn't see this until i checked the notes of that post 3 days later but hi! Allow me to tell you
Ōkami is an action/adventure game VERY similar to the Legend of Zelda in playstyle. A YouTuber I like likes to say that it's their favorite Zelda game. In Ōkami you play as Okami Amaterasu-- (Okami being a pun on the Japanese word for "wolf" (okami) and "god" (kami), the goddess of the sun, origin of all that is good and mother to us all, taking the form of a white wolf.
You learn from the opening cutscene that Amaterasu used to be something of a protector of the village of Kamiki, known to the townspeople as Shiranui. Everyone thought Shiranui was dangerous and aggressive and out to get them until she swooped in to save them from the eight-headed demon Orochi, sacrificing herself and dying in the process. In her honor, a statue was erected at the top of the village, where, 100 years later, Amaterasu reawakens and is born again from that statue without a single memory of her past, being given only one quest: save Nippon from the coming darkness and regain your divine power.
So, with an artistic little green sprite named Issun very reluctantly tagging along as her adventuring companion, Amaterasu--nicknamed "Ammy" by our little friend--sets off to do just that, crossing the lands slaying demons and helping people along the way.
The fun thing in Okami is its focus on art and nature. The art direction means the entire game is inspired by the Japanese Ukiyo-e art style and as a goddess you have the power to very literally paint your problems away. Across the game you pick up various brush techniques that are used as your personal superpowers to control things like fire, water, wind, lightning, you name it. And with this power you travel across the land and restore the corrupted world to its former beauty, painting life back into the wilderness. It's absolutely beautiful and you befriend all sorts of people and animals. You can feed every animal you come across just for the fun of it. I love it

Every time I replay Okami I can't help but wonder how Kamiki, a village with like five houses and less than 10 people, was able to provide a maiden to sacrifice to Orochi every year for 100 years straight. Also why didn't everyone just leave.

replaying okami with some knowledge of japanese sure is a treat. yeah the pretty place where you get the nature technique is called blooming flower valley. kamiki village? kami-ki? god-tree? come ON. kusa village? grass? sure. doesn’t make perfect sense in the story but good enough. apparently it can also mean rot which is somewhat better. kazegami… the celestial brush god of wind… take a guess. demon stronghold is called oni island cuz why think of something fancy. the ultimate ruler of darkness’s name is darkness. fantastic

Round 1, Group 7
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda and spoilers under cut
Maize: She's a plant spirit who just wants to see the sun again! She may or may not be actually corn, but she does leave behind a kernel of corn that you have to take care of for a sidequest.
Konohana tree: Used as a guardian for the village it's found in, same as it's offshoots found all around Nippon (ancient Japan) The main tree is home to a wood sprite named Sakuya who at the beginning of the game, brings Amaterasu back from a statue of said character's likeness after an ancient evil is reawakened and plunges the world (or at least country? It's a bit unclear) into total chaos. As it turns out, her tree, the Konohana, (which apparently just means flower tree) was planted 100 years prior during a much darker time in Kamiki Village, the place it resides, by two wandering sisters you meet occasionally's ancestors who are implied to be from another country. She and the tree were the only thing keeping the darkness that awoke at the beginning of the game to fully take over. She's also really pretty- the tree AND the sprite.

Concept for an Ammy mask from my leather base, which I got from OkamiKitsuneStore on Etsy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⚠️ credit OkamiKitsuneStore and I if you repost, and do not claim as your own.
The original photo shows a curved leather wolf mask (like cosplay, not pandemic) that covers the whole face except for eye holes, though it lies on periwinkle bedsheets and not on someone's face. It has a semi-3D snoot with a black nose, and its white paint job is rough around the edges.
All 3 images have 2 of these masks set up like a "before and after" to compare the original with my edits. The ones on the right are my Ammy edits.
First edit is just Ammy's markings. They are symmetrical red marks rimming the eyes, underlining the eyes, and forming a circle on the forehead. Dark gray marks line the inner ears.
Second adds mesh to the eye sockets to conceal the wearer's eyes but allow them to see through. The mesh is black with white circles in the center that look like pupils.
Third one uses the previous image but edits real eyes behind both the og and the Ammy edit to sample how they'd look on someone, based on how it actually looks on me! The skin is white and the eyes, which stare at "you", are brown. In the Ammy edit on the right, the eyes are difficult to see through the mesh.

okami is still the gift that keeps on giving. when i last cleared the entire game i was like "ok this time for SURE i have seen the whole thing and all of its secrets" but no. in THIS playthrough ALONE, ive learned:
you can make friendly fire happen between two enemies; not ALL of them, but it works on imps at the very least
using trees in combat actually does damage some enemies a fair amount! i actually think it interrupts some attacks but i have to experiment more
using a cherry bomb on an npc outside of combat is EXTREMELY FUNNY, particularly on imps
ringing the epicurean bell BEFORE orochi's appetizer is ready spawns a blue scroll
someday i might make a video about 'okami secrets' but honestly idk how many of them are all that hard to figure out. because of how many times ive played this game idk what things are or arent considered obscure. anyway, here are some of my favs
if you power slash heaps of snow in kamui, youll sometimes get snow sculptures of certain characters
How The Sun And Moon Techniques Actually Work (this ones more of a theory, if u care to find out, it's below)
you can smear ink on enemies to get them to flail around and farm demon fangs off of them with the reflector sub-weapon counter
drawing a circle around npcs makes most of them run over to pet ammy
that previous thing notably does NOT work on waka , but it still consumes ink and plays the sound effect as though it DID work. i LOVE that because it implies to me that waka DOES feel a pull to go pet ammy like the rest of the npcs, but is capable of resisting it
you can't headbutt waka! he sorta shimmers and evades you and you can never hit him.
you can find the real raos skeleton in the tunnel that connects the palace in sei-an to ankoku shrine
theres SO MUCH specific dialogue that youd have to actively seek out in order to see. for instance, everyone in kamiki village has unique dialogue if you talk to them while susano is on your back instead of taking him directly to the rock at the village entrance
OH I JUST REMEMBERED; if you draw a circle around any of the wep'keer villagers, instead of running to pet you they will shift into their wolf forms.
okami good. and like...this game came out in 2006. could you fucking IMAGINE how much neat stuff could be possible if they made a Actual Sequel with modern game engines. capcom . im looming behind you capcom do you fucking hear me are you listening capcom im
ALSO theres a lot of stuff that had me wheezing in confused fear during my last full playthrough. a lot of it pertains to lechku & netchku and the events surrounding their fight. like i have reason to believe that the intro legend about shiranui and orochi is wrong, but im not gonna make a post about it until ive gone through and played the whole game again, paying particularly close attention to the past-kamiki and ezofuji segments
ok im elaborating on how the sun and moon techniques actually work, as i understand them
i was halfway through writing up a thing about how these techniques don't actually let you control the position of the sun and the moon, and instead just changes the time. but then i remembered that no actually thats not true, since a lot of puzzles require you to have the sun or moon shining on a specific thing !! so in that case YES you are changing the position of the sun/moon. also the mechanic is LITERALLY you drawing the sun and moon in the sky so what the hell was i even talking about.
yes, without a doubt, ammy can control the position of the damn sun or moon as she sees fit, which affects the amount of light on the planet and changes the "time" to "day" or "night". the reason time is in quotes there is because if you are UNIQUELY changing the position of the sun/moon, the flow of time would be unchanged. unless you are looking at a sundial, man-made clocks WOULD NOT change if the sun was suddenly in a different place.
BUT WAIT! if you go to sei-an city and stand somewhere so that you can see the clocktower, then use the sun/moon technique, the hands on the clocktower start to move REALLY FAST until they correspond to the time that reflects the technique you used. which means that ammy changing the position of the sun/moon DOES affect the literal flow of time*.
heres the (in-universe) theory part: i think that the sun/moon brush skills at their core are techniques that let ammy control the flow of time by using the place she draws them as a reference point. i think if she wanted to, she could kinda 'scrub' through time the same way you would for a recorded video, but drawing the sun and moon is just easier, faster, and more fun.
im doubling down on this idea because in the beginning of the game when you first get out of the tutorial zone and into kamiki, there's no sun, no stars, no moon, nothing. all of the villagers are statues. i think that orochi's revival caused time to stop, which would explain why drawing the sun is what fixed the problem. by drawing the sun, ammy re-established the flow of time and got it moving again. im willing to bet that the moon technique would have worked just as well, but at that point in the game you obviously dont have access to it
now that i think of it, there are a few more brush techniques that you could argue are time-based. im less confident about those , so i'll list them but refrain from elaborating for now because it would require me to double check some stuff and i dont want to do that right now. also id be here for HOURS. anyway , other than the mist technique, the ones that i think COULD have something to do with messing with time are rejuvination and bloom. *as a side note, im pretty sure when you change from night->day or day->night it moves time forward, but im not sure what it does when you use sun/moon techniques to "reset" the current part of the day.
for instance, when im running around an area looking for stray beads and treasure, theres lights that shine on the spots youre supposed to dig, but only at night. instead of waiting for daybreak , when i hear the owl noise that happens like halfway through the night, i use the moon technique to "reset" the night back to the start. i started doing this because when i was a kid i saw that when you change the time of day , the villagers go "?????" and i felt bad for confusing them. i digress.
i'd be curious to find out since the game keep tracks of how many "days" (day/night cycles) it takes you to complete the game. i want to know if "extending" the night/day moves the "clock" an entire day ahead, or if it moves it back to the start of that original day/night. i can't remember off the top of my head if the number of days affects your overall score for the entire game, but i imagine it doesnt (or if it does, not by much) because of how often you need to be using sun/moon tech to solve puzzles.

…What? I visit Kamiki Village. Somehow, a prince who said structures of remaining his hands full. Also hot during genesis, the clovers and microwave soon.
Today's doctor is: al pacino, but is just for fun because he's a very funny actor
Today's patient:
"Wow, that's crazy. What, you say you have never heard of a place called "Kamiki Village"?"
"Yeah, I guess I haven't," responded Satoru's brain. "I can't even remember what you just asked."
What.
