Movie Review - Rangoon

Rangoon was a frustrating watch for me. Not because it is a bad movie, but because there are parts of this movie that are so well done and then there are parts that are just outright stupid. This is a movie that could have been excellent but ends up being good. And that's a shame because director Vishal Bhardwaj has in the past delivered masterpieces like Omkara with Saif Ali Khan and Haider with Shahid Kapoor. And my expectation from this movie was to get a similar result.

Rangoon primarily is a triangle love story, set in the backdrop of the Second World War and a parallel Independence war for India. The movie begins with an on foot fight sequence, shot beautifully with a handheld camera (a scene at par with international cinema), cut to a beautiful broadway like song sequence that leaves you hooked and excited for what's coming next.

The first half of the movie is engaging and captivating. There is this particularly stretched up segment towards the interval involving Kangana, Shahid and a captured Japanese soldier that I just loved. Bharadwaj flexes his creative muscles to the fullest in these scenes.

The protagonist of the movie is Julia, a movie star, played superbly by Kangana Ranawat. Her character is fearless, yet vulnerable. She sings, dances, romances both Shahid and Saif, shows layered emotions, does comedy, and also kicks some ass. She is undoubtedly the star of this movie.

Supporting her are Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor. Saif plays a married man, who was once an action hero, but due to some unfortunate circumstances had to give it up. He is now Julia’s producer, lover and owner. He is menacing, yet charming. And then there is Shahid, who was a POW, but managed to escape from the Japanese, and is now Julia's bodyguard. He delivers a strong performance that we know Bharadwaj always manages to extract from him.

The one performance I did not like AT ALL was that of Richard McCabe as Major General Harding who insists on speaking in Hindi, and deliver cringeworthy shayari throughout the movie.

But as it usually happens in Bollywood movies, the curse of the second half strikes, and the screenplay gets more convoluted and some scenes look very haphazardly placed. The runtime could also have been cut short with some necessary editing. As much as I loved the first half, I hated the last 15-20 minutes of the movie. Everything that was happening in the end was so overdramatized to manipulate emotions and get patriotic hoots and whistles that I could not help but face-palm.  

Also there are one too many songs in the movie. While I loved Yeh Ishq Hai, Tippa, Alvida and Julia, I was annoyed by Bloody Hell, Chori Chori, and Mere Miyan Gaye England.

But despite all this, Rangoon is a marvelous movie. It is an ambitious attempt and for that I give points to Bharadwaj. It has been shot at never seen before locations of Arunachal Pradesh and has been captured with breathtaking cinematography by Pankaj Kumar. The production design and set design are of grand scale.

But what makes Rangoon worth a watch are the performances by its lead actors. They pour their heart and sole into these characters and flesh out layers that are just astounding.
