I know my fellow Californians are still fascinated by the dark orange color of the sky, but I have had quite enough. While I wait impatiently for FedEx to redeliver (MY HOUSE EXISTS AND I AM IN IT), I will distract you with a toe-up “flap and gusset” sock heel. This is the one @kateatherleyknits teaches in her Custom Socks book, and it is my current favorite: simple to calculate, easy to memorize the steps, and a “seamless” knitting experience with no breaking of working yarn or picking up stitches. You can see it fits just as nicely on my longer foot (left) and my higher arch (right). And it doesn’t even really mess up the striping on these ones either. It’s in the early stages, but I’ve started the #wavedeckshawl by @kateatherleyknits in #wooleasecakes from @lionbrandyarn. I’ve seen a whole bunch of these knit in #lionbrandmandala, which is very similar, but is completely acrylic while Wool-Ease is an acrylic and wool blend. I’m actually using two different needles on this one (a US 7 on the knit rows and a US 6 on the purl rows because my purling tends to be looser), and it is so far working (and my stockinette looks much more even). The needle shown in the pic is a US 6, because my last row was a wrong side row. (And I’m using two separate circular needles, as I do not own a set of interchangeable needles.) I woke up thinking about @kateatherleyknits observation that yesterday's arrangement of lozenge-shaped stones on a stone in Maine evoked a shawl. I am a weak knitter. I incline toward needlearts that take a needle with an eye - hand sewing fabric, leather and fabric applique, and chain-stitch embroidery. So where Kate saw a shawl, I woke up seeing applique and reverse applique on the bodice of a dress. I dozily considered pour-dyeing and imagined walking the furrows of a field barefoot and lying down in a wet, white dress on red earth. This pattern was in my #makenine, so when the #LotsOfSocksKAL began for #WorldDownSyndromeDay, I hopped right on. They were SO fun to knit. I was terrified of that intarsia heel, but it went just fine. I did end up frogging (see below) with plans to rework it to work for my legs/feet, so I started another pair for the KAL instead of going into the second sock. • • Pattern: Card Party by @paperdaisycreations Yarn: Colorwork in Cherry & Cauldron in Tough Love Sock by @sweetgeorgia with the MC being Typewriter in Marie Antoinette (sparkle! soft! swoon!) by @yarnloveyarn • • SO… I’m pretty sure #lipolymphedema (or maybe any lower leg #lymphedema) is not compatible with colorwork on the leg. This latest try I went at while reading @kateatherleyknits Custom Socks - and it was definitely the closest I’ve gotten - they actually went on, even with some extra swelling! But…they… look weird. And I have to admit to myself that my leg size is so changeable that there are days they’re going to be tight, and days they’re going to bag in places, (mostly depending on how much I’m on my feet.) 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really wanted the problem to be tight floats, bad knitting, or even bad weaving, but it’s really just my legs. • • While my feet do swell at times, as long as I keep up with pumping and compression, they change nearly as much as the calves/ankle area, so I’m pretty sure I’m going to reknit them with just the Typewriter as a stockinette leg/calf and the colorwork on the foot.
