#KateMillett (Saint Paul, 14/9/1934-París, 6/9/2017), #escritora, #profesora, #artista y #activista #feminista radical estadounidense. Se licenció en Lengua Inglesa en la Universidad de Minesota y se graduó con honores en 1956; después realizó su posgrado en Literatura Inglesa en la Universidad de Oxford. Es considerada autora clave del #feminismo contemporáneo. Su obra Política sexual (1970) se sitúa entre las obras clave de la corriente del feminismo radical. La tesis principal de Millett es que el patriarcado con sus papeles y posiciones sociales no deriva de la esencia humana, sino que el origen del patriarcado es histórico y cultural. No existe disparidad mental intelectual ni emocional entre los sexos. En 1966, se convirtió en miembro del comité de la National Organization of Women (NOW). En agosto de 1970, publicó su tesis Política sexual, donde ofreció una amplia crítica de la sociedad patriarcal en la sociedad occidental y la literatura. En una entrevista de 1977, explicó que en Política sexual se propuso plantear al género como una categoría política semejante a la clase social y a la «raza» y demostrar que el sexo masculino ha dominado el mundo durante toda la historia escrita, convirtiendo al patriarcado en un sistema de gobierno que deja en manos de los hombres el poder sobre todas las instituciones convirtiendo así a las mujeres en ciudadanas de segunda categoría, oprimidas y fuera del sistema, sin poder ocupar cargos públicos importantes y al margen de la cultura. En 1971, comenzó a comprar y restaurar edificios cerca de Poughkeepsie, NY. El proyecto se convertiría en Women's Art Colony Farm, una comunidad de mujeres artistas y escritoras. Su libro Flying (1974) es una autobiografía no académica en la que se expresa la vena artística de Millett, como escultora y cineasta. Habla de su matrimonio con Yoshimura y sus amores con mujeres. En The Loony-Bin Trip (1990) trata sobre el trastorno bipolar, describiendo experiencias en hospitales psiquiátricos y su decisión de suspender su terapia de litio. I finished "Sita" a few days ago and it was one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read! You can actually feel the pain Kate Millett was going through while writing it. I'd definitely recommend reading it if you don't mind books that have almost no plot lol. Returning to reading this, by Kate Millett, better known for Sexual Politics which I also own and haven't read. It's not easy. The honesty of accounts like this is never easy to encounter. The Loony Bin Trip is an account of her own experiences. I bought it after reading a superb talk she wrote, "The Illusion of Mental Illness" reproduced in the book "Alternatives Beyond Psychiatry." Another book I've not finished. As for me, I have accrued 18 different and mostly meaningless psych diagnoses. I have a traumagenic dissociative condition that brings much distress at times. But I do not have a mental illness. I am not mentally ill and changing the language I use about myself has been critical in recovery - however I define it - to the point I've reached and to the points I'll reach in the future, at which point recovery won't be the right word to use either. Millett's talk on mental illness and psychiatry is fantastic. I wish it was widely available but I can't find the text online. Fue cofundadora de tres grupos feministas radicales de Nueva York: New York Radical Women, Redstockings y New York Radical Feminists. Es especialmente conocida por su libro La dialéctica del sexo: en defensa de la revolución feminista publicado cuando tenía 25 años, en octubre de 1970, convertido en un influyente libro en la historia del movimiento feminista. Firestone extendió las teorías marxistas de opresión de clase para ofrecer un análisis radical de la opresión de las mujeres, argumentando que la inequidad sexual surge de la carga de la maternidad, que se transfiere a las mujeres por pura casualidad biológica.​ El libro, fue traducido a varios idiomas y situó a Firestone a la vanguardia de las feministas de la segunda ola, junto a #BettyFriedan, #KateMillett y #GermaineGreer. #NaomiWolf dijo sobre el libro en 2012: "Nadie puede entender cómo ha evolucionado el feminismo sin leer este punto de referencia radical y provocador de la segunda ola".​ Poco después de escribir el libro se retiró de la vida pública.
