Rewatching 2010 thoughts

I did a bit of rapid posting last night as I rewatched the film as I certainly have a lot of thoughts about it. It has been a long time since I have and after reading the book I’m kind of sad? It’s still an enjoyable watch but some of the changes are just so unnecessary, especially when it’s noticeable the things they took effort to keep.

One thing I will admit is this movie definitely influenced how I read the book, appearances lined up (except for Katerina who’s male in the movie)

They accidentally demoted Frank in the briefing “co pilot” and “deputy commander” aren’t exactly interchangeable

I like Floyd being friends with Milson and Caroline being much more understanding but this is unfortunately at the expense of literally everyone else. As the conflict comes from within rather than the situation most of the time- it’s really unfortunate as the “insta friends” part of the novel works to its benefit

However, everyone’s a quippy bitch and it’s really funny

The movie is absolutely terrible to Tanya makes weird choices of her being military, no longer married to Vasili (for no real reason) and the absolutely insane illogical choice of making Max go out

All of Floyd’s transmissions contain elements from paragraphs from the book itself a nice touch

I really really wished they hadn’t went with the conflict/war route because the movie is at its best when everyone’s conversational and joking around with each other like in the book. The movie mentions it a few times but should’ve stuck with science>country astronaut bond

Do love the scene with Walter and Max going to the discovery and how instead of the focus being on normal breathing it’s hyperventilating

Something something burry your gays. The book goes into detail on how everyone thinks a manned probe to the monolith would be stupid and suicidal. But there’s no Katrina so we got to blow up the boyfriend (however i am a sucker for angst but my god)

LOVE Starchild Dave actually, I love the distortion and how his real voice beneath it is so soft and confused. How his eyes are freakishly blue and shiney- don’t like it implied he was married- idk why I hate that as much as I do

Actually do love the far more climatic blast from Jupiter. It really shows the “the message wasn’t sent to us because there was no guarantee we’d be ok”

Movie Chandra forever actually, he really encapsulates the general feel of the character and his care for Hal. 

They use the same two pictures of Frank and Dave for everything and it’s really funny because they’re just pulled from the movie and not actually nice photos of them

Mel wastes no time with her love interests at all. I guess she has to be that way because before you know it they're written off the show.

Typical CW crap. All of love interest are thrown away. I still wish they would bring back Kat or Jada since I feel like they were the best suited for Mel. Jada especially considering we are lacking whitelighter representation. I loved Niko but they destroyed that relationship. Though I enjoy Ruby. I know Ruby isn't the most developed character but the actress makes it work.

Hello, anon here with a abimel related topic! Interested on your take on how Abigael would react to meeting Mel's past partners. If you can I'm also interested on your takes about what they would think about Abigael herself, or Mel and Abigael being a thing (either a fling, or actually becoming a couple).

Hey, nonny!!! I’m so sorry this took me so damn long to get to. I’m just incredibly unmotivated. I haven’t opened my laptop in days, but I really wanted to get this done for you, so that’s why I’m sitting in the parking lot of a Dollar Tree sans bra and makeup in my XL Outer Banks hoodie with my phone out. Did you need all that context? No, but I’m notorious for oversharing.

In terms of Abigael meeting the exes in general, I think she’d be one of those “oh I hate it when the new partner and the old one don’t get along, let’s not go down that road, shall we?” people bc she thinks she’s above the messiness of that. She wouldn’t invite them to a party unprompted or anything like that, but I think Abigael would have that mentality of “y’all aren’t together anymore, you don’t want her, she doesn’t want you, we can coexist, also I’m dope as shit so of course I’m the one she’s with, you don’t go from LV to Coach.” It would have to be more of a Abby/Harry/Macy situation for her to do the same kind of snide comments and sexual remarks.

B u t at the same time, if the ex is Niko who’s a cop, I think she’d be mildly antagonistic, just not for the reason you’re thinking. Being a GOOD cop requires Niko to be a goody two shoes like the Charmed Ones, she’s out here trying to fight crime and solve it. It would be more about mocking Niko’s pursuit of justice that makes Abigael roll her eyes when she finds out Mel dated a detective. Also this is really dumb, but if Niko came back for season three, I could imagine Abigael calling her like constable to be annoying. I think if anything changed Abigael’s attitude towards Niko is if Niko still had feelings for Mel, and it would take everyone’s interference to keep Abigael from hexing her girlfriend’s ex. We’ve seen how she reacts when Harry leaves her dinner party to be with Macy and co.

JADA WOULD BE THE MOST CHAOTIC AND THE MOST ENTERTAINING, NONNY. HER REAL PARENTS WERE A WITCH AND A WHITELIGHTER WHICH IS ILLEGAL? ABBY’S PARENTS WERE A WITCH AND A DEMON WHICH IS ILLEGAL TOO? SAME HAT. They would get on like a house on fire. 10/10 not judging each other for both having past/current relationships with Mel. Neither of them adhere strictly to magical conduct, they’re not above using it to expose awful bastards, and thanks to their bimagical heritage, they can do dope shit. I think just in general they’d both be curious what a witch-Whitelighter and a witch-demon can do. OH MY GOD THEY CAN SPAR. THE FLIRTING. “Well it’s been a good long while since I’ve had a goth pin me down. Uni was such a lovely time.” Not saying that Jada and Abigael are the same person, but like a level or two below kindred spirits. I think Abigael would commend Jada for being a former member of the Sarcana and going against the Elders. If Mel thought she had a hard time wrangling Abigael to keep her on the Good Side, it’s even more difficult when there’s two people who want to set an enemy on fire/electrocute them as an interrogation method. They’re two human sized gremlins who make jokes about having a threesome if Mel is down she is and will wreck your shit as a team. Someone please explain to Melanie how her ex and her girlfriend have managed to become a demonic duo.

Can we consider Katrina an ex? She’s a former love interest. I think Abigael would be the most indifferent about Kat because she’s a plain ol’ mortal and poses the least threat to both Mel/Abby’s safety and her romantic happiness. I imagine Abigael’s met spirit mediums before, so if forced prompted to help, Abigael would be a great aid to Kat. Considering Kat owns what Jordan dubs a Wicca shop, I can imagine Abigael making a boring comment about how “cute” Kat is for practicing Witchcraft Lite and saying she must have been inspired by The Worst Witch.

I’d say Abigael’s feelings on Ruby would depend on if Ruby is just an Ex or if Mel’s attraction to Abigael made her break up with Ruby to pursue her bc those are two different avenues. If it’s the former, Abigael would kind of look down on Ruby giving up magic bc magic is something Abigael covets bc it gives her power. With the latter, Abigael would probably just avoid the bar at SafeSpace so she doesn’t have to interact with her. I don’t think she’d feel any sympathy for her if she found out about Ruby’s mom. The only sincere bone she has is in a jar with brine.

In regards to how the exes would see Abigael—

Niko: I don’t know what she’d think of her bc we don’t know what Abigael’s Human Persona is. We know Abigael the half witch/demon who became Demon Overlord. What does it say she does on her LinkedIn profile? Is she college educated? What brought her to America? Niko would definitely be civil, but would either consciously or subconsciously choose not to be around AbiMel more than necessary.

Jada: If she puts aside the demon bias, I think they’d get along in a way that spells trouble for people they don’t like, after the initial “hey, Charmed One, are you sure about dating a former Demon Overlord? You are? Okay, I trust your judgment, you have saved the world.” Macy is quaking at the utter chaos these two can cook up, and none of it has to do with Mel.

Kat: I can’t remember how much Kat knows about magic, but if she knows about demons, she’s definitely wary of Abigael and would ask Mel if she’s sure about dating her. Wouldn’t overstep any boundaries bc it’s not her place and she could totally use a half demon’s help with mediumship.

Ruby: As a full witch, she’s the most wary of Abigael and for good reason given her history. No animosity unless Abigael initiates it bc she knows she’s at a disadvantage. If Abigael is anywhere near her, she watches her like a hawk and always makes sure Mel knows she can come to her to talk.

NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of one of the Final Dress Rehearsals. Top notch production and thrilling performances from Alice, Keaton, and the whole cast! This is quite a unique capture since it was the first time the blood was dropped. Too many amazing things to point out here, don't miss this one!!! A+ Well filmed with a nice mix of close-ups and full stage shots and no obstructions. Based on the revised Off-Broadway version, and presented at the Balagan Theatre. Because this was recorded at the final run-through prior to opening night, there are a few “holds” as they worked out any kinks: * After “Evening Prayers” there is a hold to change all microphone batteries, resulting in most of the song being run a second time (the sound check was removed and put as a bonus at the end of act two). * During the scene where Carrie is getting ready for the prom a microphone made a "farting" noise and Alice grabbed her butt and said "sorry" which made the cast and tech crew laugh.

Newly surfaced video which is a HUGE improvement over the previous version which has been in circulation for a while. This is also complete and includes the opening announcement alerting the audience that the show is being filmed. Amazing quality, but still has a little generational loss. In black and white. The DVD has been enhanced with chapter stops for all of the musical numbers. This, along with the tapes of Crazy for You and Passion, is amongst the only three TOFT tapes that have been leaked.

NOTES: As far as I know, the first ever video of the Toronto production! I had the entire show in VOB format ready to post but, unfortunately, I lost the USB it was on in the middle of an airport. Luckily I was able to salvage all but thirty minutes of the original footage, so all that's lost is part of the scene after "I Am Here" and a portion of "Somewhere In The Middle Of Nowhere". If you find a USB the size of a thumbnail around Pearson, it's a $5 reward! A flu passed around the cast that they were all just recovering from, and at one point you can see Bev take a tissue out of her pilot's jacket and blow her nose. It explains the large number of understudies on, particularly of interest is that of the role of Hannah being played by a Caucasian actress, which causes her absence for the bus scene and leads to a severely different dynamic I'd not seen the character played as before.
