'“My jewel,” Temari said and wiped some soot from Shikadai’s cheek. “You’ve forgotten that I am never alone.”
There it was, the grin filled with razor sharp canines.
“Rest, my sweet boy,” Temari repeated. “I will handle it. I will bring peace back to our village.”
The last thing Shikadai saw before Temari turned around and a tail emerged from her back at will was the black eyes shining with gold.'

Secret Lady

Temari was nervous. She’s been in the kitchen with her brothers, preparing to meet Gaara’s girlfriend. Lord, his girlfriend. Her youngest brother, her Kazakage, has had someone for years. Years, and he brings her home now. Which he might be late to pick up if he doesn’t leave.
“Gaara, get out of my kitchen right now!”
Kankuro flinches but continues to bring the dishes out onto the table. Gaara looks at her with confused eyes, before looking at a clock. Sand rushes around him, grabbing the bouquet on the counter before he leaves in a flurry. As she sets the table for four, Temari can’t help but think of when she learned about his girlfriend. All because they had been a little bold. She closed her eyes for a second, thinking about seeing the hickeys on her brother’s neck, another bundle of flowers in his hands yesterday.
“Gaara.”
A bit of prying later, she’s sitting on the couch, her head in her hands.
“How long have you been dating her again?”
“…About two years.”
“Two years?”
“Yes.”
She looks up at him, and his face shows a bit of his fear. Good, because she feels slightly homicidal, but the shock overpowers that feeling for now.
“And never once, not once, did you think you should bring her to meet your family?”
Gaara looks to Kankuro, but his older brother takes one glance in Temari’s direction before he raises his hands in a surrendering gesture.
“I’ll bring her tomorrow.”
So, here Temari was. Ready to see if this person was a good fit for her brother. A knock on the door, and she moves with Kankuro to open it.The first thought she has is you’re pretty. The second is that her brother looks at her as if she’s the best thing in the world.
Well then.
Temari hugs you and accepts the gift you offer before ushering everyone to the table. Gaara and you sit towards her and Kankuro. She can’t miss the way you look at Gaara either. Pure love and happiness. The conversation starts, bringing up how you guys met, how you had to ask Gaara out because he just wouldn’t, and so much more.
She noticed that Gaara smiled more this evening than he had this entire month.
As the night progresses, Temari grows more satisfied. You’re polite, and make up for all of Gaara’s flaws while he makes up for your’s. You complement each other perfectly. One glance in Kankuro’s direction, and he agrees.
Soon, it’s time for you to leave. You hug Temari and shake Kankuro’s hand, and then Gaara whisks you away.
“I like her.”
Kankuro says as they move the dishes out of the way.
“I agree. They’re good for each other.”
And when Gaara walks through the door again, slight blush adorning his face and head up in the clouds, Temari can’t help but smile even as she smacks his head.
“Idiotic imbecile.”
But she ruffles his hair as Kankuro wraps a arm around Gaara.
“At least, she makes you happy, right?” She asks as she lightly touches his tattoo.
Gaara tangle his fingers with hers and presses them against the tattoo.
“Yes.”
“Good.” then she smirks in his direction with Kanuro as they move their youngest to the couch, “Now let us give you some tips.”
The mortification on his face was worth it.

Gods, she looked beautiful. All in white and soft florals - you couldn’t believe it really, little Hinata who would faint every time Naruto so much as looked at her would now standing beside him as his wife. He scrubbed up well, Naruto, you had gone with him and Iruka to get his wedding outfit fitted and insisted he get his hair cut for the day too. You’d never be his mother, just as Iruka would never be his father. But you two had tried, you had been the one to feed the screeching blonde baby his 3am bottles in between ANBU missions and eventually had taught alongside Iruka in the Academy. Seeing him now, with the sweet girl who’d bring you lilacs every day as a gift with a shy nod, having said their vows and exchanged rings, you had never been more thankful for sacrifices made along the way.
You also felt old. Even though you were only 27.
The reception began in earnest, guests greeting the beaming couple and Iruka standing beside Hinata’s father thanking passers by.
Having taught all of the kids in the academy, being close to Naruto and soon becoming Lady Fifth’s right hand woman beside Shizune - these kids felt just like yours. You’d mopped up their blood, dried their tears as anyone would for their kids.
You had spent so much time with them, made them take their medicine, trained with them, studied with them, mediated petty arguments (Ino and Sakura) and mended broken hearts with them. Of course, there was also the other reason.
The 6ft, silver haired reason standing in the corner. Your best friend since childhood, your Shinobi partner, your partner in crime and the love of your life.
Not that the last part came to light until about 3 months ago, when before the final battle arrived you woke up realising you might die tomorrow. He might die tomorrow. Life was too short, you’d lost too many people to forsake this chance - even though his fear of losing people he loved, and your fear of losing your other half was what kept that unspoken gap between you all these years. How you came to get together after almost 25 years of pining was a story for another day, however, because today was Hinata and Naruto’s day.
You could see Sakura, in the distance - she’d intercepted a messenger bird and pulled the scroll from its foot, and you saw her smile. Only one person can make your Sakura smile like that. Sasuke. On his journey of atonement, who knows where - but still thinking of Naruto, and Sakura. His friends. His family.
Sai stood hand in hand with Ino, a genuine smile on his face and love in both their eyes. A blushing, wait, blushing Temari stood beside Shikamaru - when did that happen? You all knew it was coming, but didn’t know it had happened. Tsunade caught your eye and winked, raising a glass of champagne in your direction. Shino and Kiba were monitoring Rock Lee and Gai who were causing mild havoc and Choji was at the Hor D’Ouvres already. TenTen stood near Kurenai and Mirai. So many loved ones, but too many missing. Neji should be here for this. Jiraiya would be so proud.
You watch the Kazekage make conversation with Kakashi who looks absolutely miserable among so many people, and you decide to save him. You grab Sai as you walk towards the Hokage and Gaara of the Desert.
“Lord Kazekage, thank you again so much for attending today. It means very much to Naruto to have you here with him today. Hinata too, although I suppose I can just call them the Uzumaki’s now! I believe you were speaking about a memorial portrait for your office, Lord Kazakage? Sai here is our finest artist, perhaps you could speak on the matter?” You interject, with levels of diplomacy you only gathered watching Tsunade daily.
“Indeed, I’m grateful to be here to witness a dear friend’s happy day. Sai, would you speak with me about…” Gaara speaks, wandering away with Sai beside him. An odd pair, one you knew would be busy making incredibly strange conversation for some time.
You glance at Kakashi, a wry smile on your face.
“Better?” You snicker, taking your place beside him.
“Infinitely. The second Naruto can string a sentence together without saying ‘Believe it!’ I’m giving him the hat. I hate all this talking.” He grumbles.
“Even to me?” You act offended.
He just gives you that adorable eye smile, lips quirking under his mask.
“Never to you.” He says, voice quieter, softer.
“You really do look very handsome today, Lord Sixth.” You smile, fixing the lapels of his jacket. He rolls his eyes.
“Not even half worthy of standing beside you, sweetheart. Y’look beautiful today, everyday but today - that’s something else.” He smirks.
“Oh hush you, you told me how nice I looked for 15 minutes this morning.” You huff.
“I believe I showed you how nice I thought you looked too, 3 times before we left the apartment.” He snickered, knowing the images of your tangled limbs in the bedsheets making you almost late would infiltrate your mind again, causing a flush across your cheeks.
“Kashi, gods, we were already nearly late - we can’t go sneaking off to a broom closet now and that’s how this will go if you keep talking like that.” You glance at the sky, trying to clear your mind.
You both laugh at the scene in front of you as Gai and Rock begin doing various exercises and TenTen just rolls her eyes. Everyone looks so beautiful, so happy. The aura of calm and peace surrounding everyone is a reminder of why you came back from the war with many new scars. It was worth it. Seeing these kids, who really deserved a better world - actually living it was more than any of you dreamed.
“Did you see Shikamaru and Temari hooked up?” You elbow your boyfriend.
“Finally. I thought his lazy ass would never do anything about it.” He snorted.
“Bets on it was all Temari.” You respond and he shakes your hand to seal the deal.
“Sakura got a message from Sasuke too.” He chimes in.
“Sai asked me to help pick a ring for Ino too.” You remember shopping with him, in awe of how much of a romantic this boy turned out to be.
There’s silence for a moment between you both.
“Who do you think will be next?” Kakashi asks you.
“For what?”
“To get married.”
“Temari and Shikamaru probably. Ino will want to plan a wedding properly, and I think we’re still a while off Sakura and Sasuke. Who knows, maybe Gai will find his partner in the grand spirit of youth?” You respond.
He huffs a laugh, but doesn’t reply.
“Why, was that not who you thought?” You question him.
“Nah.” He shrugs.
“Who do you think will get married next then?” You poke his cheek.
“Us.” He looks at you, unfazed.
You blink.
And blink again.
He just stares at you.
“Is that a proposal, Lord Sixth?” You think he’s joking, so you play along.
“I suppose so.” He nods.
Oh my god, he’s being serious.
“Kashi - are you - do you mean that?” You ask, breathless and grasp his hand.
“You used to say you didn’t want a fancy proposal. Just for someone to say they want to marry you. I want to marry you. The rings at home.” His smile is soft, imperceptible to anyone but you.
You turn to face him, smile bright and lash line glistening with tears.
“You busy tomorrow, Hatake?” You ask, a laugh interrupting.
“Shikamaru can take care of business, you got plans?”
“Wanna get married?”
He just smiles, and glances around to make sure nobodies watching before slipping his mask down and pressing a kiss to the corner of your lips.
“It’s a date.” His voice is wavering slightly.
“Let’s keep it quiet. It’s not our day. Hinata and Naruto leave for their honeymoon tonight.” You whisper to him.
“Tomorrow we’ll ask Gai and Kurenai to meet us at the courthouse. It can be just us four. Then I’ll take Mrs. Hatake home.” He nods, and your heart seizes at the sound of you being Mrs. Hatake within 24 hours.
“I love you, ‘Kashi.”
“I love you too, sweetheart.” He says, pressing a masked kiss to your inner wrist.
“SAKURAAAAA-CHAN! LOOK AT KAKASHI-SENSEI AND Y/N-SENSEI! THEY ARE SO CUTE!” Ino’s voice echoes.
“Some things never change.” You laugh as Kakashi grimaces.

Honestly after gaiden kishi can just do anything. If he wrote that sasuke used to physically hurt Sakura but they're hearts are connected we would have to believe him cause what did he do during gaiden ?
Firstly, let me just nitpick something - Saying that "Sasuke used to physically hurt Sakura" gives the impression that he just used to physically abuse her out of the blue for no reason, but that's clearly not the case. They were on opposite sides of a war, she tried to kill him while he was crazy, and he returned the favour.
Secondly and more importantly, Gaiden was by no means the prime example of Kishi writing wholly unrealistic levels of forgiveness, the main manga is full of examples.
Gaara becoming the Kazakage of the very village where he was feared as a killing machine who slaughtered many innocents. The villagers were able to forgive him despite his former reputation.
Hinata and Neji mending their relationship despite the latter aiming to kill the former during the Chuunin exams.
Naruto and Sakura never giving up on Sasuke, despite all of his international transgressions.
Sasuke being given a full pardon at the end, despite being an international criminal who invaded the Hidden Cloud and seemingly kidnapped their Jinchuuriki, which was the trigger that led to the 4th Shinobi War.
This is probably the prime example in my opinion - Naruto describing Obito as "cool", despite the latter causing by far the most shit in the entire series, and also greatly wronging Naruto on a personal level by being the direct cause of both of his parents deaths. And why did Naruto describe Obito as cool? For no other reason other than the fact that the latter wanted to become the Hokage during his youth, that's it. Never mind all of the criminal activity with the 4th Mizukage, never mind all of the criminal activity with the Akatsuki, never mind attacking Konoha and causing the deaths of his parents. Nope, he wanted to become the Hokage when he was young, so he's automatically cool...
And yet people ignore all of that. But Sasuke and Sakura's relationship? That's where they wanna draw the line and say Sakura still loving Sasuke is bullshit? It's fucking unbelievable.

I have a new sasusaku au idea.
So say after the third shinobi war, Leaf and Sand made a peace agreement via arranged marriage. The sand would provide a relative of the Kazakage's family to be a bride for one of the head families of Konoha's clans.
The Uchiha clan was chosen to receive the bride. It wasn't decided yet if she would wed Itachi or Sasuke but she would be for one of them.
As for the bride herself, there was a debate to send the Kazakage's daughter Temari, but then Suna's council remembered that Karura had a sister who had a daughter.
Sakura knew her whole life that she would eventually be sent to Konoha as a peace bride. Her childhood was kinda lonely because of it. Suna's council started her ninja training young because they knew the Uchiah's were a ninja clan by trade and that they value strength. They gave her to Lady Chiyo to train. Sakura never really took to puppetry, not like Kankuro, but she did excell under Lady Chiyo's posion teachings and beginner medical training.
When Sakura wasn't with Lady Chiyo, she was with her cousins. She was closest to Gaara since both of them were being raised to be used in service to the village (Gaara as a weapon and Sakura as a peace offering) which left them both pretty isolated as children. This isolation also left Sakura a little oblivious to the village's fear of her favorite cousin. All she knew was that Gaara was a sweet boy who just needed some extra training to control his powers. Yes, she did know that Gaara had Shukaku in him and sometimes he lost control of his powers, but like most kids, she doesn't fully understand what that means.
Sakura and Gaara's relationship took a hit when their uncle, Yashamaru, tried to kill Gaara and then proceeded to blow himself up. Gone was the sweet boy who wanted to love and be loved. Gaara was now colder, and while Sakura still cared greatly for her cousin, it felt like he only tolerated her now. She was still one of his closest relationships, along with his siblings.
When Sakura was twelve, she was given two items. The first was a chain with a ring on it. The ring was silver with a red jewel. Purple chakra swirled in the jewel. The second item was a headband with Konoha's symbol on it.
It was time for her to go to the Leaf Village.
On Konoha's side after the Uchiha massacre the council looked for ways to keep Sasuke in line. They remembered the deal with Suna and made the arrangements to officially betrothed Sasuke and Sakura. Not that they told him.
The deal was that once Sasuke graduated from the Academy, they would bring Sakura to the village and assign her to his genin team. Kakashi about damn near had heart failure when his third student was escorted in with two Sand anbu behind her. Gai had to console him later.
Sakura looked around curiously at everything as she followed Kakashi to meet her other teammates. There was a lot more color in Konoha than Suna, especially the color green. Her teacher was curious, too. He introduced himself as Kakashi Hatake. Hmm, the only Hatake Sakura knew about was the White Fang Sakumo, and Lady Chiyo wanted him dead. She wonders if Kakashi is related.
Sakura is behind Kakashi when he opens the door to a classroom and an erasure falls on his head. A loud laugh was heard from the inside. Was that her betrothed or her other teammate?
"That's what you get for being late!" The voice shouted.
We're they late? Sakura winced. That was probably her fault. Kakashi did have to get her from the Hokage's tower.
Kakashi only humed as he stepped into the room, Sakura following behind. Two boys turned their stares from their sensei to her. She scanned them, one was a blonde with whisker like marks on his face, the other had black hair and eyes. While she couldn't verify via the Uchiah symbol, Sakura had to guess the dark eyed boy was her betrothed Sasuke. She was told the Uchiah's typically had darker features.
Kakashi humed again. "My first impress of you three, I hate all of you."
Well damn, that's not good. Sakura needs allies if she's gonna survive here and make sure to maintain the peace agreement. Having her sensei hate her right off the bat doesn't bode well for her.
They're led up to the roof where Kakashi has them introduce themselves, not that he offered up much info.
The blonde boy started. "My name is Naruto Uzumaki! I like ramen, especially the ramen at Ichiraku! But I hate having to wait the three minutes for it to cook. And my dream is to be the greatest Hokage!"
Well, he was energetic. But this did confirm Sakura's suspicions.
Sasuke spoke next. "My name is Sasuke Uchiah. I dislike a lot of things, and I don't particularly like anyone. I don't have a dream because I will make it a reality. I will restore my clan and kill a certain someone."
Oh, well, there's some familiarity of home with her betrothed. At least she'll have some knowledge on how to approach her betrothed thanks to Gaara.
The boys turned towards her and Kakashi tilted his head. We'll go on.
Sakura blushed. Oh, right. "I'm Sakura Haruno. What I like, I mean, um-" Damn her accent slipped, and after her tutors worked so hard to make sure it was perfect. "I like studying. . ." Can't say posions, won't look good since she's suppsed to be a peace offering. ". . .medical plants and the effect they have on the body. My dislikes are um. . ." What was safe to say? She didn't get a chance to study her teammates before, and there wasn't much info her anbu escorts gave her either.
Kakashi seemed to take pity on her. "And your dream for the future?"
That was easy. "To maintain the peace and alliance between Konoha and Suna."
"How come we've never seen you before?" Naruto asked her.
The boys looked at her confused. Sakura looked at Sasuke confused. Why was he confused? He's the other half to making this peace agreement work.
Kakashi cleared his throat. "Sakura is from another village, but she has been put on this team as part of an alliance agreement. Now for tomorrow we'll have our first mission."
Sakura tensed as Kakashi explained that of the graduates only nine ever make it to genin and the rest are sent back to the academy. What does that mean for her? Would she be sent back to Suna? That can't happen, not if they want to peace agreement to work out, she can't fail this!
Sakura went to speak with Sasuke after they were dismissed. She knows they officially just met but they did need to talk about their engagement. Kakashi pulled them both back.
Kakashi pulled a silver ring on a chain out of his pocket. Sakura knew that ring. It was the matching ring to the one she wore around her neck, except it had her chakra in it instead of Sasuke's. Why would Kakashi have it?
Kakashi handed the chain to Sasuke. "Did your parents ever tell you about your engagement?"
Sasuke's face fell into a scowl. "What?"
Sakura began to grow mortified.
"The alliance agreement between Konoha and Suna was sealed with an arranged marriage between the Uchiha clan and a relative of Suna's leader, the Kazekage," Kakashi explained. "Sakura is the Kazakage's niece, and per the agreement, you two will be living together from this point on."
Sasuke turned his glare on to Sakura. Sakura was thankful she gotten used to Gaara's glares.

This probably won't get many views here or Twitter, but I'm genuinely thinking of writing my own version of Naruto.?? The relationships won't change. So Hintata will still get together with Naruto .
I have ideas based on interviews with kishimoto. Like Team Gai and Team Kurenai being sand Ninja (yes, that means the Hyuga , Inuzuka, and Aburame clan won't be leaf ninja) . Had the idead since I read Gai in particular wasn't originally planned to be a leaf ninja. That he and Lee where made on the fly for the exams.
One thing to mention is that all teams have four students. This is to include the filler students like Sora , Yakumo, and Yagura (yes, gai had a student named Yagura)
Team Gaara also has new people from the chunin filler being Shira , Sen, and Yami.
But what happened to Kankuro and Termari? Well, dear reader, that will come in due time..
Here's the major changes I have in my head so far, starting with Team 7.
Naruto
He's still an orphane born of the 4th homage minato. He's maybe a year older than Sakura and sasuke . Due to flunking the graduate exams . He was adopted by the third Hokage. In this version He's younger and much more naive than the original. (More on hiruzen later)
Sakura
She was a girl who witnessed her parents constantly fight . They both struck at each over multiple times, and eventually, she was but in foster care. Not really being taught violence wasn't the way she'd often lash out at people, including her teachers. When being put into team 7, she was scared of kakashi after some of the stories she'd read about him. She actually sometimes tries to hit Sasuke , Naruto and Sai
Sasuke
He's still the same, only real difference being that he looks more like Fugaku . He's still broady and crabby even more so with Sai.
Sai
Joined Team 7 much earlier on and is one of the reasons Sasuke left the village. Being a spy for Danzo, he worked with orochimaru closely and slowly wormed his way into Sasukes mind convincing him to accept the sound fours offer.
Kakashi
Born of a Samurai clan, that later fled to the leaf and a Inuzuka / Hyuga (haven't decided) mother from the sand . He's much the same man from the series except he's got a secret pacht with the sand due to his mum being from there.
Team Asuma
Ino, Shikamaru, and Choji are pretty much the same. I really don't see any change Nessasary .
Asuma
The brother of the third hokage it inst until after the sand attacks the leaf he fall head over hills with kurenai yuhi of the sand . At first, he has no idea she's a sand Ninja. When he initially finds out her secret he's of course, horrified . Kurenai was from the village that tried to destroy his home and ultimately took his brother from him. During the time skip they do make up and eventually start dating in secret..
Sora
Same as filler exept hes the new five tails after it recarnated, he just joins the team early on . He's constantly worried because he doesn't fit in with Ino-Shika-Cho formation. Asuma tries to help him .
Team Kurenai
This is where the divations really begin .. as Said before Major clans now live in the sand village. Hyuga , inuzuka, and Aburame. Inspired by two things . The concept of gaara owing a dog and the interview stating Gai was from another village.
Hinata .
Apart from location a lot hasn't changed. She first met Naruto in the Exams and really liked his energy and will never give in. The thing that made her mind up was the fight with Neji. The Cousin she was going to be forced to Marry eventually. Naruto does the same shouting. But this time, her motivation is based on 'why does this stranger I've maybe met one or twice cheer me on?' She actually goes on the journey with Jiriya, Naruto , Sorra, Neji, and Gaara. (Three jinjurki and three people to sort out if anything goes wrong)
Kiba
He has a strong rivalry with his Twin Gaara and says he's going to beat him at being kazakage. Gaara doesn't really care but later on indulges him and challenges him to see who gets stronger during the time skip.
Shino
Same as canon just more dessert like bugs
Yakumo
Uses paintings much like Sai, but instead of physical . They trap people in genjutsu, which are much like in her filler episodes.
Team Gai
It's pretty much the same, except Lee now has two brothers. Yagura and Shira . Both whom he likes to to one up. Gai was 16 when he had a one night stand, resulting in Lee and his brothers. He never really knew their mum. He's regretted ever since. He has a major Crush on a certain Spikey haired leaf shinobi. Whose to say that man doesn't share the same feelings .
Team Gaara
The filler characters are the same
Baki is the sensei.
Gaara is the twin of Kiba, and he's pretty much the same as canon . The biggest difference is his dog. Don't hurt, or else shukaku will come out. After the Konoha Crush, he softens quite a bit and looks very different from how Naruto met him.
Temari and Kankuro are Sand Anbu like shinobi that are the older siblings of Kiba and Gaara. They resent Hana at first for caring about their brother, whose only seen as a weapon. It's not until rasa dues do the realise that Gaara, if taught correctly, can harness his powers, so they set up a meeting with the leaf village . As long as Gaara is safe and cared for, then could he train under Jyriya. Tsunde reluctantly agrees... that's all I have so far...

I want to read/write a Fanfic where Gaara's insanity and tendency towards murder pre-Canon is caused entirely by his inability to sleep combined with the complete lack of protection his mind has from Shukaku —
(who is constantly assaulting him with screaming/threats/manipulation/violent thoughts & emotions/etc)
— thereby preventing him from ever being able to think clearly, except literally no one in Suna had ever realized any of this until suddenly something happens that results in Gaara's seal getting fixed.
(Maybe Jiraiya ran into him during one of his rampages and was reminded of his godson, Naruto decided to help him out since he was just a kid and he felt bad for him and also really guilty about Naruto.)
This whole time they just thought that he was evil and insane and a monster, only to suddenly be faced with this... eerily calm and passive version of Gaara.
Literally nothing fazes him anymore. Someone slips up and his instinctive sand is the only thing that saves him from being brutally injured if not killed, and he just... doesn't even blink.
He just stares blank-faced at them and then moves on with his day.
He spends most of his time now either sleeping or just sitting around staring at clouds — he practically turns into a Nara, minus the laziness.
Rather than lazy, he's almost listless.
Nothing seems to rattle him anymore, he hasn't been angry since his seal was fixed, and he spends all his days either napping or just wandering around.
Yesterday someone saw him in the greenhouse; they think he was trying to figure out gardening.
Absolutely no one has any idea how to react to any of this, least of all the Kazakage and his family and their Jounin sensei.
Gaara, of course, is entirely apathetic and oblivious to all of this.

I'm kind of surprised people are ranking Gaara so high. Sure he's Kazakage, making him unfortunately unapproachable, but he's traditionally attractive, has superb manners with a dash of chaos, carries an incredibly powerful blood line... maybe it's because he's probably more awkward about romance than Sai would be (unfortunate). It's why I think Gaara's siblings probably have to interfere with any attempt at courtship. Like, tell him he's being courted intervention.
I'm actually going to have the disagree that Gaara is traditionally attractive, at least not as much as the others on the list. Don't get me wrong, I think he's cute, but... the whole no eyebrows, face kanji, and heavy black eyeliner isn't really traditional beauty, if that makes sense. Or maybe we just have different tastes!
I do love awkward with romance Gaara though 😂 His poor siblings suffer so much with his weird questions and complete obliviousness haha!

au where gaara where gaara in love with naruto, naruto and hinata are dating, and naruto is training to become hokage. naruto has hinata show gaara around due to his busy schedule, and the two grow close as friends over his many visits with gaara eventually beginning to wonder if since hinata had the heart to fall in love with one jinchūriki, if she'd be able to fall in love with another...
the answer is yes. naruto becomes hokage, hinata and neji are heads of the hyūga clan, and gaara leaves his position of kazakage to move to the leaf and finally have an identity outside of his usefulness to his village. narugaahina marry and everyone lives happily ever after.

Spoilers for Lavender Sand | Chapter 2 | Rated T
As the meetings broke off into groups of topics, people moved to who they needed to speak to, shifting around the room. Hinata stood by her father until he signaled with a subtle flick of his wrist behind his back. She instructed Hanabi to stay while she moved around to play her part as the easy-to-approach Hyuga. People took the bait, dropping hints that showed their true nature when they spoke to her. Eventually, she turned away from a conversation and came face to face with bright purple face paint.
Hinata flinched back to focus her eyes on the Suna male. “I’m so sorry.”
“Hyuga, right?” Oh, she almost ran into him because he was about to get her attention?
Hinata bowed her head respectfully. “Yes, Hinata Hyuga.”
He shifted stiffly. “Your clan is important to the decisions made by the Konoha, right?”
Hinata chose her words carefully, always. “Yes, our clan is a large part of the community. We are considered in most decisions made by the village.”
“I’m Kankuro.” Kankuro pointed to the Kazekage, who sat next to the Hokage, glaring at the table like he was trying to set it on fire. Yet, Naruto was talking at him with the biggest smile. “Adviser to my brother Gaara, the current Kage of Suna.” So they were related. Gaara. She recognized that name. Naruto spoke highly of him, but she couldn’t place any details other than that.
“Pleased to meet you.” Hinata bit down on her tongue before taking a risk. “He doesn’t look very happy today, does he?”
Kankuro’s face twitched, making another uncomfortable face. “No, he never really is.” Red flag. Was his brother scared of him? Had they fought? The Kazakage didn’t seem like someone you would want to have a disagreement with. He looked like a man who would make a strong stance and not care to listen to yours, but you couldn’t guess everything on looks.
“Will you be handling relations with the clan then?” It explained why he approached her so awkwardly.
“That’s the idea, an important year for peace and all.” Kankuro’s moved his wary look from his brother and focused on her. Hinata smiled to ease his worry, offering for them to sit. She sat up straighter. Kankuro was taller by two heads, at least.
“Are Hyuga women all so beautiful?” Kankuro sat beside her, giving her a crooked grin, changing his demeanor with the subject.
Hinata faulted as a blush crept to her face. That was a complete change of mood. “That’s a matter of opinion, Kankuro-san.” Hinata attempted to will away the redness, but the confident grin he gave her didn’t help. Men had made comments all morning. Honestly, this was the first comment to be a little charming. She was sick of hearing men twice or more her age make passing comments on her purity and ‘birthing hips.’
Kankuro was pleasant. They spoke about how the Hyuga influenced the village. How and why their decisions mattered. He kept an upbeat, cheery demeanor but occasionally tossed a wary glance at his brother like he was waiting to be scolded. Hinata took one of those as a chance to ask about him. Kankuro dodged her by giving her another compliment or turning the question around on her.
“Hinata-chan?” Hanabi whispered over her shoulder. “Can I sit with you for a while?”
Hinata motioned to the chair beside her. Hanabi was starting to look worn. These events took a lot out of you, and it only got worse by the day.
“This is Kankuro-san. Kazekage’s advisor and elder brother.” Hinata motioned to him. “Kankuro-san, this is my younger sister, Hanabi-chan.” Hinata introduced them. Hanabi bowed her head like a lady. Good girl.
“See what I said? Hyuga’s are beautiful.” Kankuro commented.
Hanabi didn’t even flinch, merely thanked him with a proud smile. Hinata wished she had her sister’s confidence. She was still trying to flush blood from her cheeks.
“The Kazekage doesn’t look like he wants to be here.” Hanabi got a tap from Hinata’s finger on her leg, telling her no, but it was too late.
“No. Not really, but he always looks like that when he’s working. He probably would have just sent us if it weren’t for his little friend.” Kankuro gave another glance to his brother. Hinata was starting to get the impression he wasn’t worried about getting caught doing something he shouldn’t but rather about what his brother might do if he wasn’t being watched.
“Naruto-kun?” Hinata wondered. Kankuro nodded.
“Why?” Hanabi pressed.
Kankuro’s eyebrows came down in confusion. “You haven’t heard about him?”
The two Hyuga girls shook their heads.
Kankuro sat straighter, shifting his eyes, unsure how to word himself. “My brother is not known for good things. As the vessel to the one tails, he’s been known as the monster of Suna. He’s been a respectable leader, but he has a past of being ruthless and harsh, with no remorse for killing his enemies. All that isn’t easily forgotten. It’s built him a reputation that he lives up to. He’s usually fine when in a calm social setting, but he’s still fierce when working. Unfortunately, he’s a workaholic.”
Hinata’s heart broke for him as she remembered all that Naruto went through growing up a vessel. Naruto grinned like all was good in the world, shouting to the Kazekage, who glared at him with only a distaste for his volume.
“It must be hard on him to be considered that way. It’s cruel. It’s not the child’s fault that the last generation decided they should take on a demon. It can’t be easy growing up, managing a whole other being inside you.” Hinata turned her sad gaze from Gaara to Kankuro, who looked like she slapped him. “I’m sorry?” Has she missed something, lost her thoughts? Did she say something out of line? Hanabi was just as confused as she did.
Kankuro held his hand up, whipping his head around, looking for someone. “Can you excuse me for a moment?” What had she said that caused such a reaction? Kankuro ungracefully weaved through the room to the other Suna-nin, hastily dragging her from her conversation with Shikamaru. When had he come in? Was he a security detail?
The woman became irritated, but with a few whispers, her face slowly twisted into the same thoughtful shock as Kankuro had.
Had Hinata said something insensitive for Suna culture? Hanabi shook her head. She was just as lost.
The Suna set approached, prompting Hanabi to stand up. “I think they will want to talk to you alone,” Hinata felt that too, but she wasn’t sure why. Hanabi squeezed her hand before disappearing to return to her father’s side.
“Temari, this is Hinata Hyuga. Hinata, this is my sister Temari.” Temari was everything Hinata wasn’t, tall, tan, strong, and confident.
Hinata bowed, hiding her confusion. “Pleased to meet you.”
Temari sat, throwing one of her long legs over the other. “Hinata, have you met the Kazekage yet?”
Hinata sat straighter, tucking her crossed ankles under the chair more. “No, but Naruto-kun said good things if memory serves.” Hinata looked over at the tailed-beast holders again. Another pain hit her heart, seeing Gaara’s scowl at the world. Why were they treated like monsters? They both had to work so much harder to become strong leaders of their people.
Turning back to the Kazekage siblings, they both gave her an odd look.
Temari broke the silence between the three. “Do you know the village well, Hinata?”
“Yes,” Hinata answered.
“If you’re not busy after the meeting, could you take my brothers on a tour? Naruto was going to take them, but he will be caught in paperwork for the Hokage.” Temari looked back over to Shikamaru, who might actually be asleep against the wall he was leaning on.
Kankuro leaned forward. “Temari wants to take off with the bum.” He received an elbow in his rib cage for the comment, which he rubbed viciously. “Hey!”
“I’m not sure if I’m the best to do so, but I can do my best.” Hinata agreed.
Temari lit up. “Perfect.”
--**--
Hinata fiddled with her fingers as she waited by the door. She felt much more nervous about this arrangement now that she knew her father had spoken to Kankuro before she had. Of course, he mentioned her eligibility. Hinata hadn’t considered Kankuro, a possible suitor, but his sister’s proposed tour made more sense now. It was a set-up.
Brother to the current Kage of Suna was a high enough status for the Hyuga council.
Hiashi warned her not to offend them. He didn’t need an ‘or else,’ but if she wasn’t self-conscious taking the two most eligible males in Suna on a tour alone before, she was now.
Two sets of footsteps approached, prompting Hinata to straighten her back and force a smile. She deliberately clasped her hands behind her back to stop fidgeting. “Ready to start?”
The Kazekage stared her down as if she should already know the answer. Kankuro nodded, returning her smile. She was very aware of the Kazekage’s distaste. Was it for her or because Naruto wasn’t the one taking them? Hinata led them out the door and down the steps, squeezing her hands behind her to calm her nerves. She kept a speed that would be comfortable for their long legs, sacrificing the usual casual pace, especially in heeled shoes. She kept her shoulders straight and her head tall. She was probably failing. She probably looked like a walking chicken or worse.
Hinata turned her head over her shoulder. “Was there something you wanted to see first?” It felt uncomfortable to be leading. She was always a step behind her father, Neji, and Shino.
“Gaara has been taken to see the Hokage mountainside, but I haven’t,” Kankuro answered. Gaara said nothing, so Kankuro determined where they went. Gaara’s glare became darker when their eyes met. She took the hint and faced forward.
Kankuro took to walking beside her, which she was grateful for. He asked about landmarks on the way, which she answered to the best of her ability. Gaara stayed silent, which prompted her to continuously check if he was still there. They nearly made it to their destination when he finally spoke up. “We’ve gone the wrong way.”
“What do you mean?” Hinata hadn’t made any odd turns and took the shortest way.
“This isn’t where Naruto took me,” Gaara explained as he crossed his arms.
“Oh! Well, that’s because I like the view from up here better. Fewer people come up this way. Naruto likes to stand right in front of it… or on it.” Hinata mumbled the worst attempt at a joke.
Gaara’s crossed arms tighten. Hinata wasn’t sure what to do. Should she show him her spot or do things Naruto’s way from this point on?
“We can always see it from upfront. I want to see what you got.” Kankuro passed her, though his voice didn’t seem sure of himself like he was testing his brother’s limits for the day.
Gaara’s shoulders stiffened more before he gave an audible heavy breath, following his brother up past her. Hinata closed her eyes to collect herself for just a moment. Letting out a silent sigh of relief as she followed them, glad to be in the back of their small group.
Kankuro climbed the hill. “Awesome.” Gaara soon joined his side, gazing out over the village toward the mountainside.
Hinata attempted not to let on that her heels were sinking into the dirt. “It’s not the detail you will see from standing in front of it. But it looks more like spirits are coming from the mountain from here.” Hinata looked out over the mountain with them. As a child, she thought it looked like they were pressing their faces through the mountain. She used to have dreams of a full person coming out and walking over the village. Maybe those were nightmares. “We can still go right up to see it if you like.” She offered, seeing how Gaara’s mood hadn’t improved.
“Maybe later. I like this one.” Kankuro answered, not realizing she wasn’t asking him.
“Kazekage-sama?” Hinata added to be more specific.
Gaara turned only his eyes to the side at her, then returned them to the mountain. “This is adequate.”
Hinata shriveled inside. She hoped he would at least enjoy the new point of view. “Whenever you’re ready, I can take you through the town. I can go the way Naruto-kun likes.” Hinata wasn’t taking any more chances of offending the Kage. He already didn’t like her for merely not being Naruto.
“Sure.” Kankuro turned to go back down the hill. Gaara followed him. Arms still crossed, shoulders still tense. Hinata stepped forward, feeling her heel sink into the ground again. This was going to be a long day.

When the youngest son of the Kazekage was born, around the same time, a girl was born.
One is a monster.
One is claimed to rival the intellect of those in the Nara clan.
Both were born for each other. [Name] was trained for the longest time, by the best shinobi the village had to offer, to protect their best weapon.
A master for a sword.
But she didn't do what they expected her to do. Even though no one would go near Gaara, [Name] was the one who stuck by him, through thick and thin.
It was only a matter of time before they fell in love with each other. And the moment Gaara became Kazekage, she became Anbu Captian and the Head of the entire army the Sand Village had to offer. The second most powerful, right behind Gaara.
And everyone knew not to say bad things about the Kazakage when she was around. It always ended with someone in the hospital. And it wasn't her.
They all whispered about how much she loved him. All talked about how the Captian had lost control the minute she saw him.
Saw her life, her everything, her Gaara, motionless, on the ground, being sat on.
How dare they?
Sleepless nights, ever since the kidnapping of Gaara reached her ears, while she was on a mission. She came back to the village so fast, that people say she rivalled the speed of the Yellow Flash.
And now they are telling her that he is dead? Dead? No, she refused it. Because when he died, her heart would automatically stop. Her love would kill her right there and then.
And she wasn't dead.
Deidara had only started speaking about art, when his head hit the ground, rolling away from his body.
ʎzɐɹɔ ǝɯ ǝpɐɯ ǝʌol 'ǝɯ ǝɯɐlq ʇ,uoᗡ
Sasori jumped back, shivers running up his back, because of the look in her eyes. The absolute hatred and rage, that promised his death. Those eyes held more death than those of the Tailed Beasts.
In the end, there were two Akatsuki dead, and only one person fighting. The Konoha shinobi were shell shocked. Shocked at how she moved.
But she didn't care. Because Gaara wasn't waking up, no matter how much she shook him.
"Gaara-sama, Gaara-sama!"
There were tears forming in her eyes. She's never cried before. Sakura came around, her hands glowing green with chakra. She glanced up at [Name] before she placed them on his chest.
"Pulse, none. Time of death-"
She was cut off abruptly as [Name] pushed her away, placing her own hands on his chest.
"I was meant to protect. I was made to protect. To serve. He changed me. He saved me. My life is his as long as he exists."
Chiyo's eyes widened as she noticed how the speaking girl manipulated her chakra.
"𝙄 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨, 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧, 𝙗𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙖𝙖𝙧𝙖 𝙖𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙨 𝙄 𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩."
Chiyo gave a hand signal to Sakura, who quickly got up and circled behind [Name]. Who was too busy pouring her life essence into Gaara.
One nerve. Three ounces of pressure. And a distracted captain.
[Name] was unconscious.
Everyone knows how that mission ended.
But after the war. After everything, [Name] got the one order that she dreaded.
ʇɥɓıɹ ʇı ɓuıop ʇ,uıɐ noʎ 'ʇ,usǝop ʇı ɟI
"[Full Name], as of right now you are being taken off of duty for your lack of management during your latest mission."
Her heart dropped.
"I'm sorry?"
Gaara just stared ahead, looking at the wall behind her.
"I'm taking you off duty."
[Name] searched the eyes of her beloved, trying to see if he was messing with her. To see if he was understanding how this would hurt her. Hurt them.
"I didn't do anything wrong."
Gaara's eyes flicked to hers.
"I'm not going to change my mind."
"You can't do this! This is the one constant that's been in my life, Gaara. I'm a damn good shinobi. And, I didn't do anything wrong. I was trying to protect my teammates and eliminate the enemy! It was the best option I could up with! ME! The Genius of this village."
"[Name]-"
"NO! This is bullshit. I know I came back injured, but that's part of the job description! The reason you're giving me is shitty as fuck! I couldn't really think of another fucking escape plan, and I thought being injured but ALIVE was better than being tortured and DEAD."
They were standing toe to toe. She couldn't believe her ears. [Name] understood that her plan wasn't perfect, but her plan promised escape, alive, without any casualties. And that was more than enough for her to take a couple of kunai to her body to escape with her comrades.
"I won't. Change. My. Mind."
"Fine. Then don't talk to me. Because you're not listening."
And with that, [Name] turned and left his office, tears swimming in her eyes.
The next few days, it was absolute radio silence. Neither of them spoke to the other. And Gaara had appointed Temari as the new Captain.
A few days turned into a few weeks and nothing changed. Gaara had gotten better at expressing himself. But that entire fight he had with [Name] still made him want to jump out of the window.
He just didn't want to lose her. He wanted her to be safe. To be with him.
But you were right. It came with the job description. And you were a damn good shinobi. Plus, if you were saying that the plan you came up with was the best option, then you must have thought through everything else.
So, yeah, he realized, he was in the wrong for this. But how was he going to apologize to you after being so dumb?
In the end, he decided a little drink would help him think up a solution. So he dragged along Kankuro and headed over to the nearest bar for some sake.
---
After a couple of drinks, and a complete breakdown on his brother's shoulder, Gaara stumbled his way to the hotel room you were living in.
"[Name]~~, open up baby. I need'ta," he hiccuped, "Need'ta ta'k to you babe."
The door creaked open, and your stoic face showed up in his blurry vision.
"Gaara-sama?" his heart hurt that you used the honorific, one that you had reluctantly left behind. Gaara's eyes flashed, something low and guttural swimming in his eyes. His hands grabbed the edge of the door and pushed it open, while he finally stood up to his full height.
"Don' ta'k like that, baby~"
[Name] looked on, unimpressed but slightly surprised that he was drunk. She led him inside and laid him down on the bed, pulling his shoes off and bringing a bucket to him in case he throws up.
"I'll be leaving now, Gaara-sama. I hope you have a good night's rest."
She turns to leave when a hand catches onto her wrist and yanks. [Name] stumbles backwards and falls into the bed, her back flush against his chest.
"[Name]," his voice vibrated through her body, and she couldn't help but sink into his arms, finally feeling at home after a long time.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I should've trusted you, and I can't express how regretful I am I said those things to you, and how mad I am at myself for not trusting you."
Her breathing stills, as she realizes that Gaara wasn't as drunk as he had acted. If anything, he might be just a little tipsy at best.
"I was, I was just so scared of losing you after everything we've been through. Terrified that after all the fighting, blood, and war, I'd lose you and I, I would've never lived."
Turning, [Name] planted a kiss on his lips, his hands immediately flying to her hips and pulling, deepening the kiss.
"It's okay," she replies after pulling away, "I understand how you feel."
Gaara gives her a puzzled look. She laughs, hollow and empty as if she was in a place that robbed her of light.
"That time when the Akatsuki got you, Gaara, I was gone. Terrified, angry, and so sad. So, so sad I wanted to die thinking you were dead. And now, I never, ever want to see that again, so I try to do everything in my power to prevent that from happening."
He just squeezes your hips in return leaning in and touching your foreheads together.
"I think, I'm gonna sign us up for some therapy, and maybe we could have a date tomorrow? Oh and also, you have a lot of work to do 'cause Temari has been doing nothing 'cause she is mad at me."
She laughs, happy and feeling like a burden has been lifted off her shoulders. The rest of the night is spent with laughter and love, feeling as if the two had gotten closer to each other than ever before.
