ik im always saying that the orv fandom should stop going so hard for 1minute but im not doing myself any favours thinking too much about how kdj's first kill was kim namwoon (someone he identified with very strongly; someone he saw himself in; someone he couldn't bear to leave inside the story) and his last murder attempt was quite literally himself TWICE (through his fading away as the oldest dream and also literally trying to strike a younger version of himself). his first and last acts of violence are all against himself, and not even sacrificing himself so his companions might live but going above and beyond that. why is his self loathing so great adn his complete and utter disregard for his own life so immeasurable that he must do this every single time. ofc kdjc's came back for a silver of hope this man could be alright. bitch i would too

do you think part of the reason why dokja’s face is so unclear/censored throughout most of the story is because his self as the oldest dream (ie 15 year old him) cant imagine himself surviving to adulthood

orv webtoon ch. 195 ///
Tumblr media
this comment is everything. the lee sookyung and kim dokja's parallels keep paralleling. she didn't realise he didn't want to be saved he wanted her to be there. kim dokja never truly realised lee gilyoung, shin yoosung, and the rest of KDJC only wanted him to there there. the only way they know how to show their love is through self sacrifice and every time they do their children resent them for it. im gonna blow them up with my mind

tbh after i read orv i had to say that hsy was the character i understood the least - i couldn’t understand her motivations and actions, and by the second half of the novel she’s someone else entirely. but I think as i almost conclude my first reread it makes more sense why
first of all, hsy’s lived 50+ years by then. she’s mellowed out. she may have gotten rid of most of her memories from that time by the time kdj finds her again, but she’s still had to live thru those 50 years and has been semi-conscious even after Yuri di Astriel’s ego tool over her body.
we didn’t meet the whole hsy at the beginning of orv. she was only about a half of the ‘original’ hsy. it seems like the hsy that went to the 1863rd worldline was evidently the one who knew more about twsa (given how she was able to get to the 95th scenario AND became a constellation similarly to kdj (1864 hsy was convinced abfd was the sponsor she needed so was not able to become a constellation in the scenarios)
so when 1863 hsy bestowed visions to hsy and her story [Predictive Plagiarism], hsy changed. i feel almost as if she matured after 1863 hsy helped her. before, when she started the scenarios, she was self-centered and repeatedly described to be someone who would betray others for her own benefit, and her change was even unusual for kdjc (evident thru the amount of times jhw clashed with her later on).
hsy is a different character by the second half of the novel - whole. and maybe this is why she was one of the first people to realize 49% kdj was not the whole kdj. because she was once a ‘half’, too. from the beginning, we only knew the ‘selfish’ part of her, which has never really left her. she was ready to sacrifice the world for her one reader if she could, ultimately resigning herself to to cling onto hope and write twsa and orv for him.
i can’t claim i fully understand hsy yet - maybe that will take a few more rereads for me. maybe it’s because i personally do not empathize with her as much as everyone else in kdjc. but i think maybe reading orv - a story longer than the bible that she wrote - brings me a little closer to her

Thoughts after rereading ch 5 of orv
When kdj is reading that only two survived in the train car 3807:
Lhs still kinda had that shock and sense of morality (although troubled) in the beginning. I don’t think the situation would’ve set in and he would be frozen for a bit until he had to do it.
But knw? Knw would rampage. We know he would. Later on when we see the other version of him (or amalgamation of versions of him?) kdj is able to attack his psyche by bringing up the slaughter at the beginning. From what I can remember his mind was in a chaotic state from that demonized skill back then and it was a massacre.
It was his original sin.
Just in terms of his soul it’s heartbreaking. How many times had knw massacred the train car throughout yjh’s regressions? How many times was lhs unable to stop him? How many times did he hide it behind his chuuni attitude, suffering on his own? Kdj’s knw is different than the one from twsa because he was killed before he could finish the first scenario and knw was happier as a result. He likes the underworld.
In a way kdj also saved him. It’s ironic because in my first read through when knw was begging for his life I felt bad for him. He is a kid after all (not that that excuses how he was abusing the old lady). But still, I’m pretty soft hearted so I often wondered if it would’ve been better if kdj stopped him, took him under his wing like the others, and rehabilitated him. Raised him. Maybe not the same way he did for sys and lgy but like he did ljh (I’m of the mind that ljh is also like his kid. He didn’t spend as much time with her and she’s older so the affection is more cracking jokes than wanting hugs, but he loves her all the same).
I wished that we got to know him as part of kdjc. But it’s better this way. Of the og twsa group he’s the most well off. Everyone else is left haunted by kdj’s absence and of not being able to save him. By comparison our knw had more lighthearted interactions.
Maybe I’m wrong about this and knw is also gutted by kdj’s absence. I’m rereading for a reason. I know I missed things.

[ID: two expression variants of orv fanart for a pose prompt of han sooyoung perched on a ledge leaning her weight back on her hands and kim dokja standing close in front of her, bracketing her with his arms. theyre both in pjs/underwear and have comfortable body language, although hsy is laughing at an annoyed kdj in the first and kdj is tenderly smiling at a surprised hsy in the second.]
@istherewifiinhell asked for HANKIM and YAY many many times i have started an intimate hankim and scrapped it so im glad for the responsibility to finish one lol. they can be intimate but they do have to either be enacting 10,000 elaborate rituals or be cracking jokes about it
[pose source]
and bonus sidetracked trying to imagine a kdj who can be sexy to someone when u cant get him in clothes more fun than the fox ears. landed on the image of his buds bullying him into one of yoo joonghyuk's fashion harnesses:

continuing off from my butthurt anon ask earlier; in the end, i’m not into the other novel, so i would not be the right person to write a crossover befitting my tastes instead. it sucks because had the crossovers not made me salty, i know i would’ve found enjoyment in the story, but that’s life. (i’ve been thinking up crossover ideas with other fandoms that thanks to this, though. it’s a fun thoughtpiece)
.
but based on what i have gathered (MAJOR SPOILERS for any passerby):
1) it’s EXTREMELY important to mark down that the entirety of orv occurs as the DREAMS of a abused, suicidal 15-year-old boy using escapism as a coping mechanism, and that has a major hand in dictating the setting mechanics.
this means you need to have an EXTREMELY good reason why c and his family managed to enter orv without getting instantly ejected from the setting for not having been in ways of survival in the first place, if you opt to take this route in a crossover.
there’s a few fics that offer legitimately interesting ideas for this; somnambulist is my personal holy grail in this sea of fuckery because the writer had c READ ORV before jumping in, ergo on top of ensuring it’s just fourth wall layered on top of fourth wall there’s an amount of understanding and kindness and sheer general appreciation. (it is so good, actually.)
another offers ‘c was in wos’, but i personally feel like it dropped the ball for several reasons, not least of which is the clear roadblock that stemmed from that writer… not finishing orv, so it hits the same roadblocks of bypassing certain worldbuilding elements without offering a reasonable explanation for it under orv’s constraints, buying into kdj’s unreliable narration and thus not reading between the lines of kdj dissociating and deriving from his own backstory when he talks during emotionally driven arcs, and. yeah
another idea could be; either kdj or someone else in kdjc read the story c was from? say that hsy read c’s novel, so kdj might not have any idea where c’s gang came from but SHE sure does. and since hsy was able to read it, that means that several others would have read that novel too - so c would be in the story because his life is ALSO a story. i’m not sure if that exists, but it would be nice if it did
2) sacrifice (and why you should not be doing it)
it’s a shared theme between the two, from what i can tell? i hear from some that c isn’t actually sacrificial, it’s just that it always looks that way because either the multiple contingency plans he’s stacked together eventually drill down to that outcome or the things he has to do (i.e healing factor) just looks really bad from the outside. i wouldn’t know that for certain, so i’d leave this to your hands
in any case, in orv it’s a result of kdj’s passive suicidality and because sacrifice is the only love language his mother ever taught him. if i recall correctly, in c’s novel it would be because his life had managed to lock him into that pattern pre-transmigration? he’d become too used to living in high-stakes situations on top of also having a miserable life before his apocalypse, so he goes overkill when trying to secure a peaceful life post-transmigration.
that could be an actual talking point; that their lives had locked them into thinking patterns that hurts both them and the people around them, one way or another. gathering plan after plan and not relying on other people to understand, struggling to connect with others because connection gets you hurt.
depending on c’s ability to gauge other people’s mental state, would he recognise kdj’s thousand-yard dissociation stare for what it is or not? c was transported into a world that was kinder to him, finally, so he’d have had more leeway to connect with the people around him too; would he be able to recognize kdj’s coping mechanism from the outset?
would kdj recognize the same in him? he had chosen to help lee gilyoung but not his aunt because he had. (but he’s also terrible at reading people for the most part… his autism levels are off the charts)
that would be interesting, wouldn’t it? for both kdj and c, their lives pre- and post-apocalypse were ‘ruined worlds’, and they adopted mindsets accordingly. it would be interesting to compare them. it would be interesting to try to break out of that passive suicidality mindset with a mirror to reflect with.
3) this story is for that one reader / this story is NOT for that one reader
from what i have gathered, c read a story meant for his dead friend who opted to sacrifice himself instead of letting c die (which could be lumped into the above point, maybe); in a way, that story saved c anyway by giving him a family. in the epilogue, orv was written by hsy for kdj, but yjh was saved by reading that story regardless; reading of a man that he loved and knew and hanging on just a little longer.
why not take that to its extremes? we keep writing on flat, blank canvases (a wall) in the hopes that our messages will reach someone, but there’s no guarantee that it’ll reach the intended recipient. messages get lost in postal, people mistake it for junk mail, stories get dismissed as not being worth your interest.
but whether it reaches that one person or not, there’s always a chance that it’ll reach someone else, too. that they’ll come across the wall by chance, or have the words read out to them by someone else. that you’ll be seen by someone who you never expected.
you meet people you don’t expect to connect with; for kdj, that’s ysa, lgy, jhw, hsy. he wanted to write a happy ending for his favourite characters, but in the midst of that he connected even with people he never expected to know.
so how about two stories never expected to cross? c could perhaps be described as a post-apocalypse protagonist displaced into high fantasy, so being the unintended audience wouldn’t be the first time for him, either. to know another person, to know another story; to love and appreciate and recognize each other’s sentences in all its flaws. to save and be saved by people you hadn’t intended to. a serendipitous meeting. that’s something beautiful in and of itself, i think.
those are thoughts that i would never be able to put into motion, because i have not read c’s novel and i will not be able to until the taste of salt from when i foolishly dunked my head under the tumultuous tides of fandom has finally receded. but i offer this to you, because if you are taken with both stories yourself, i hope, perhaps, it will be something of worth to you.
sorry for the spam and the salt, and thank you for reading this far :> have a nice day henceforth
It's fine anon, don't worry! Also, since I've gotten your permission to post this one, I decided to do so. I really liked these ideas and I really do hope that someone will write at least one of these. Thank you for the ideas!

[ID: A collection of grayscale Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint fanart of Yoo Joonghyuk, Han Sooyoung, and Kim Dokja.
A young, battered Kim Dokja clutching a book to his chest-- the Oldest Dream-- looks forward tiredly. Behind him stand the Secretive Plotter and Han Sooyoung, the former looking at him warily and the latter smoking.
Yoo Joonghyuk, wearing an apron and with lightning crackling from him, lifts Dokja and Sooyoung by the backs of their coats with an ominously unimpressed expression. Dokja smiles nervously while Sooyoung grins unrepentantly.
Dokja looks touched at a slice of birthday cake.
Sooyoung and Joonghyuk, who are both holding up Dokja by the collar, turn to face the viewer with furious "Hah?!" and "What." Dokja laughs nervously and raises his hands helplessly.
Sooyoung, Dokja, and Joonghyuk standing arm-in-arm together while wearing suits. Dokja is sweating very nervously and is labeled "guy who proposed getting married for tax benefits unironically and is just now realizing that maybe he is not 100% emotionally detached from the idea." Sooyoung is grinning smugly and labeled "agreed b/c she figured this would happen and has been having fun watching KDJ explode over the course of the entire reception". Joonghyuk is labeled "agreed b/c he is newly returned from a century in space w/ infinite patience and is content to let KDJ do whatever at this point."
Hanging on the wall is a large, dramatic poster of Joonghyuk, Sooyoung, and Dokja, labeled "KDJC Limited!! 8x11" poster; Courtesy of Mass Production Maker". Uriel is crying tears of joy, and system notifications say "You have spent 10000 coins" and "Const. Demon like Judge of Fire is shedding tears!!"
The three are shown with animal ears and tails. Dokja and Sooyoung stare intensely at a red laser dot on the table in front of them, Sooyoung's tail twitching with interest. Joonghyuk is turned away and huffing with a self-important expression, but his tail is high, and he's labeled "pretending not to care."
Dokja is asleep between Sooyoung and Joonghyuk, who watch him intently.
Sooyoung and Joonghyuk are mid-pulling each other's hair and clothes, but they turn to look forward with silent unimpressment at an offscreen Dokja, who's represented by a demon squid saying, "Can you two please pose nicely for one photo."
Joonghyuk smiles peacefully as he holds up his phone to take a picture, backlit by sunlight. End ID]

And refuses to use their diaper parachute after Skydiving Steve nopes out of the situation, only to miraculously survive thanks to luck and the sheer chaotic energy of the situation.
