I often think about Young Arthur/John experiencing a culture shock when receiving positive feedback from Hosea/Dutch when they do something well.

Like for instance; Arthur learns how to shoot a bottle from a distance, and he finally hits it dead on.

Hosea, earnestly impressed with the kid, compliments him wholeheartedly, and seeming a little more giddy this time, runs to grab another bottle.

Arthur, not really used to this kind of affection, sheepishly looks down at the gun in his hand with a small smile.

Or for John; I can imagine him and Dutch practicing how to write his name.

“J O H N M A R S T O N” he reads out every letter as he writes it. Dutch, impressed that he got it on the first try today, happily congratulates him. “Can you read it?” He asks. And John sounds out the letters with perfection, and recites everything he’s learned about pronunciation rules, as he reads it. To which Dutch is VERY impressed.

John embarrassed about all the praise, asks to move on with the lesson, which Dutch is happy to do. However John thinks about the interaction for the rest of the afternoon.

I want to take the Kid from Blood Meridian and just plop him in the middle of the Van Der Linde gang and see what happens.

Dutch would try to teach him to read and then gets punched.

Hosea would not even bother, but would probably force him to get up and work and the kid would and not complain.

Arthur would probably whoop his ass like a disgruntled father cuz he's tired of his shit.

Micah would take a shine to him in the worst way possible.

Older John would try to be a positive role model for him but younger John would argue with a teenager for like 5 hours.

But mostly? The kid would just stay quiet and watch everything unfold around him, sorta like Arthur stalking the camp interactions, and just sit there.

John having the house alone when Dutch, Arthur, Susan and Hosea go out on a robbery in a different city and getting drunk in the living room with javier, them running around in a teenage frenzy stealing sweets and cigarettes from the shops and cycling to a lake and swimming under the late afternoon glow just laughing and talking crap about people at school, content in eachothers company, lying next to eachother on the grass and 'practicing kissing'. Javier is so in love, John is so scared. They're eachothers best friends they don't want to lose eachother but they will in the end.

fun little fan theory that has literally zero backing whatsoever: in gta v there is a little easter egg referencing rdr, a book titled “red dead” by j. marston. which, in my delusional little head, means that the games both rdr and rdr2 are actually just the plots of that book, written by jack, BASED off his father’s time in a gang. but in jack’s reality everyone actually lived, and he just wrote the books while listening to his dad and old uncle arthur tell him about their “good ol days” and everything is all right in the world. arthur’s alice, john’s alice, abigail is alive, and they have dinner together twice a week

Imagine the aftermath of the gang breaking down or Arthur's death for little Jack. He's young. He's confused. The bare sense of stability he had for the 4 short years of his life has just been violently uprooted. Maybe he keeps asking his parents where everyone is? When do they get to go home?? In the same innocent tone that he asked Arthur when they were gonna return to the camp in Blackwater. Perhaps Abigail tries to explain things in a way he'll understand, but at the end of the day he's still too young to grasp it.

Maybe the first time Jack asks where Uncle Arthur is, Abigail has to excuse them both from the room?? Because she knows John won't want his son seeing him breakdown or cry.

But he's a little kid, so he keeps asking. Where's uncle Arthur? Where's uncle Hosea? Where's uncle Dutch? He wants to go home (what home is there?) until the questions eventually just... stop.

Did everything sink in? Does he finally understand? Probably not. Abigail realizes that it's not Jack's curiosity starting to fade - it's his memory.
