Graphic Novel Review: New Books in Children's Graphic Novel Series

Cranky Chicken: Party Animals by Katherine Battersby. Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2022. 9781534470217. 104pp. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781534470217?partnerid=34778&p_bt

Three more short stories about Cranky and her friend Speedy (a worm).  The first involves getting over being hangry, in which we find out Cranky is vegetarian and does not eat worms. The second involves a surprise party that's not a surprise (surprises make Cranky cranky). The third involves a trip to the beach which, of course, Cranky is not looking forward to. All ends well because Speedy is an awesome friend. Beautifully drawn and hilarious.

Barb has the Shadow Blade (which she acquired in Book 1) and its power makes her awesome. She's taking the new monster zerks she's recruited, including her yeti friend Porkchop, to Maug Horn to try to figure out how to defeat Witch Head. Along the way they encounter bandits and Barb tells the story of how she became a berzerker in the the first place. That's how we learn about the Ghost Blade, which makes Berserkers unbeatable. Of course Barb will need to figure out how to use the Ghost Blade to face her former teammates who have been turned evil and now serve Witch Head. (The fantasy violence in this book is more silly than anything, and most of the monsters are completely kid-friendly.)

Read this cool graphic novel during lunch. 5 Worlds: The Cobolt Prince by Mark Siegel, Axel Siegel, Xantha Bouma, Matt Rockerfeller and Boya Sun. It’s a bit of Avatar: The Last Air Bender and a teeny bot of Star Wars (it says that in the synopsis 😂). - 📚. Really well drawn with a sweet plot that unfolds in a surprisingly fast way. Ember is a tiny boy who lives in a huge city and dreams of going to school with the "giant" kids at Seawinds Elementary. One day he slips and falls into the schoolyard and, after an Indian Jones-esque escape, ends up on a beach where he meets Lua, a sea turtle. She tells him about an island she found when she was a little turtle, a magical place full of lost creatures where she went to school and learned about the world. And she offers to take him there.

And the island is super cool, but telling you more about it and what happens there would spoil this graphic novel for you. This book is just as beautifully drawn as Pamment's Treasure in the Lake, and it's full of strange, magical, and mostly friendly animals and plants. My favorite character is Ember's first friend on the island, a rock that helps him get to school on his first day. (Doug the dung beetle is a close second.)

Twins by Varian Johnson and Shannon Wright Just finished Twins, and wow, this new graphic novel is a hit for a reason! The plot is simple on the surface - two twins enter middle school and run against each other for class president, and that story already sounds intriguing - but the truly interesting thing about the book is its characters. Francine is eager to evolve, become a new-and-improved person in middle school and differentiate herself from her twin, while Maureen is apprehensive about change, fearing her sister might be changing too much from the sis-BFF she's always been. Through the course of the story, we learn that each sister both admires and is jealous of the other. To Maureen, her twin seems to have it easy - Francine is a confident speaker who has no problem fitting in socially, while Maureen struggles with timidity. However, as Maureen learns only later in the novel, Francine's desire to create a new image and compete stems from her fear of Maureen being seen as "the smart one" and herself, left behind. When the sisters reconcile, realizing they are stronger with each other's support, the moment is real and moving. The relationship drama looms large, but it's not a heavy book at all - the comedy is wonderful, both in words and illustrations, and the art style? I LOVE IT! It's very much the author's own, but still incorporates the fun over the top réactions you see in a lot of manga. Also- bonus points for normalization of crushes on any gender, but focus on friendships and family before romance, and lots of awesome supportive adults in school and home - yay! I guarantee all your kids/students will be asking for this book - all ages (in the read aloud room the other day a preschooler asked to read some!) and its relatable themes ensure teens and adults can enjoy it too.
