I have been meaning to create this inspirational word art "kindness" painting for some time.  There is the need for "kindness of strangers". You never know what has happened to another person so take time to be kind even if it appears to be unappreciated.  You never know how small acts of kindness may impact the life of another.  Keep trying.  Kindness is more than how we treat other people, but also about how we treat ourselves.  This is a difficult time in the world.  I struggle to allow myself the same kindness that I find easier in giving to others. Here’s a lovely prom story: My daughter Catrin (@blythefilms ) had her senior prom tonight. We have had a lot of stuff going on, including moving to a new apartment and college visit trips, and so getting a prom dress got pushed aside. We ordered an inexpensive, but very pretty, dress on Amazon using Prime and paid an extra $25 for it to arrive on Thursday. To sum up the angst—it did not arrive Thursday. So that evening, as I was in a full panic wondering how to find a dress for her in one day without spending hundreds we can’t afford on a dress, I posted to @ladygeeksatx —a terrific group of women-identifying geeks here in Austin. I begged them for ideas on where to shop and asked if anyone had a dress that she could borrow, rent, or buy. And y’all—the response blew us away!!! So many women responded with sympathy, suggestions, and even several dress offers. One lady even posted a request to another local women’s group, and that resulted in @staypolishedaustin offering to do Catrin’s hair and makeup! Amber did a beautiful job, so I would like to pay it forward by strongly recommending her to anyone in the Austin area who needs hair or makeup for a special event. She is a lovely human and I hope will become a new friend! This dress was one of the ones offered to Catrin by a wonderful woman in LGA, and it was perfect! I can’t express my gratitude strongly enough to all these women for reaching out and showing such kindness to a stranger. They made Catrin’s senior prom so very special—way more so than if the dress had arrived on time. She said she felt like she had an entire army of fairy godmothers looking out for her. 😍 Though we didn’t have time to contact them, there is actually an organization here in Austin called @austinfairygodmothers who are dedicated to making sure that all girls can afford beautiful prom dresses. So to pay it forward again—please check them out or donate to them if you’re local. It’s so beautiful when women support and care for each other! The kindness of Strangers

So I’ve had a bit of a rough week. Work has been crazy, it’s the holiday season, we have a new puppy who is wonderful but is also a lot of work, then yesterday I found out now that I’ve switched insurance one of my medications has gone from $40 to $250, and to top it all off I woke up discovered my puppy peed on me and my freshly washed bedding and when looking at the clock realized I was supposed to be at work. It’s been hard. However when I went to the cafeteria at work the person in front of me paid for my fruit. Small gesture cost them $2.50 but it made everything better because it reminded me that the world is good and people are good and he told me to pay it forward. In short, if you can do something like that for another person do that you never know what a difference it will make

Yesterday when we arrived at school Kaddy saw a little girl who was sitting in the shade looking a little sad. Kaddy said “oh no mum that little girl over there looks sad, let’s see if she’s ok” So we went over and kaddy asked her if she was ok. The little girl said she felt ok but was just a bit shy because this is her second day at this school. Kaddy and the little girl exchanged what grades they were. The little girl was in year 2 and had moved from a different school. Kaddy said “i am new to this school too. Come on let’s play!” And she took her hand and they played together until Kaddy’s class opened. It was in this beautiful exchange I realised Kaddy is one in a million. She made a difference in that little girls life yesterday and I thought to myself, wow, how special the world would be if we were all like kaddy. My heart is the fullest it’s ever been 🥰 . . . Day 20 of the Iceland ride: Álftavatn to Þórsmörk (30km). We actually get to ride today! Turns out that the second half of the 54km Laugavegur hiking trail gently descends (mostly), which enables us to finish it – though it takes us 12 hours! We coast down for good stretches, across windswept volcanic moonscapes, gaping in awe at the massive glacier-topped volcano we’re approaching. Eyjafjallajökull is one of Iceland’s more famous volcanoes: its 2010 eruption led to ash clouds that disrupted air travel across Europe for a week. It’s also fierce looking, giving off a vibe of heading towards Mordor. To further keep us honest, there’s some adversity mixed in: three river crossings (two with water moving fast enough to almost knock us over), a vertigo-inducing canyon where we inch along the rock wall gripping a chain, and more steep ups and downs to push (or cling to) our bikes through. But the enduring impression is how many folks along the route are kind to us: the guide who makes us coffee this morning, the hikers who tell us they winced every time they saw a steep pitch thinking this’d be tough to bike, the hiker who as we arrive in Þórsmörk (the end of the Laugavegur trail) hands us one of his beers. #kindnessofstrangers #icelandicbackpacking (at Laugavegur Trail) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS2oIDDsnHf/?utm_medium=tumblr
