Indigenous People's Day

On this Indigenous People’s Day, we are featuring Matika Wilbur’s recent publication Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America, published by Ten Speed Press in 2023. Wilbur (b. 1984) is a visual storyteller and member of the Swinomish and Tulalip peoples of coastal Washington. She holds a degree from the Brooks Institute of Photography alongside a teaching certificate that has shaped her style of educating through narrative portraits.  

Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America, a book born from a documentary project of the same name, resolves to share contemporary Native issues and culture. In 2012 Wilbur set out from Seattle to visit and photograph all 562 plus Native American sovereign territories in the United States.

Wilbur’s engagement with the communities she visited resulted in the creation of hundreds of dynamic portraits and documentation of conversations about “tribal sovereignty, self-determination, wellness, recovery from historical trauma, decolonization of the mind, and revitalization of culture.” She refers to her portraiture approach as “an indigenous photography method” that includes several hours and sometimes days of interaction with the participants, an exchange of energy and gifts, and asking sitters to choose their portrait location. The outcome is a stunning collection of Native narratives and portraits.

What are you fave angsty stories/writers? I love angst, but have a hard time deciding what stories to read!

I always find it difficult to recommend writers as there are so many great writer past and present in the fandom. Plus so many klaine stories have a bit of angst in them.

We do have our angst and blangst tag. So many great stories.

I'd also recommend my other admin Lynne's favorite fics: there's all sorts of fics on there but may are angsty fics.

I have some things to say! First off, have six sentences of Matt being a mess. @cutestkilla actually came up with this idea:

The polecat must be amazing at dodging, because it manages to avoid every spell. My spells are erratic and I hit parts of the office. Fuck, I am so fired after this. After I don’t know how long, the door opens again. “Miss Possibelf?” Simon Snow pokes his head in. “Simon Snow, save me!” I yell pathetically.

I actually have, uh, almost everything finished! Literally only chapter 5 is unfinished, but everything else plus the epilogue is done. I will probably tweak some things every now and then, but the fic has been written. Apart from chapter 5.

Secondly, not officially fic related, but y'all gotta see this fanart of Klaine at Kongresni trg, made by @esilher! I will get back to Ljubili se... one day. Look, Matty Chris D. just pulled focus! Also I told Esilher that I need to write Kurt and Blaine going back to Slovenia just so they can ice skate there. I never knew it was a thing, otherwise I definitely would've added it in Ljubim te, when they were actually in Ljubljana.

AND LASTLY, I, uh, suddenly and totally out of nowhere wrote 1.7K words for my Marlie fic that I started in 2022. Wack. I did scrap everything I had beforehand, but that's fine. I just got hit by the need to finish this fic and look I just miss Class. I know it was a failed Doccy Whomst spin-off BUT I LOVE CLASS. Woe, Marlie fic be upon ye! So keep an eye out for that one as well, I say, to my... readers? Do people still read Marlie fic?

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?

Either FFVII or FFVIII when I was like 11 or 12… I got into them both at the same time pretty much. Posting on a site called fanart central which I think no longer exists lol and of course deviantart. I suppose before that I was posting on AOL forums about digimon when I was even younger but... 😂 I first started sharing my art and reading fic with FF.

17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?

Selvine in FFVIII and I have mixed feelings on them at this point. I want to still like them, but I associate them so much with someone who hurt me it's a bit hard to still like them. Selphie's still my favorite in FFVIII, but I think for ships I like squinoa most in that game.

20. Any ships which you surprised yourself by liking?

I was actually just thinking about this the other day because I was reminded that glee exists and how impactful it was to me since it first started airing at a very pivotal time in my life (just as I started college and was coming to terms with my sexuality…! So some of the topics on sexuality in it hit me pretty hard lol plus I just enjoy musicals)

And I was a hardcore hater of Blaine for like, the first few episodes he was in. Something about him just made me so mad, idk why 😂 He's kinda punchable and was maybe a little too perfect. So naturally I couldn't stand the ship klaine either, until one particular episode… It just kind of hit me like a brick and I was like, so mad about it lmao. Like "fine. Okay. I like you and you two are cute together. Happy?" Haha

It was the "blackbird" scene where there's been allll these one-sided crush episodes of Kurt being into him and him being oblivious, but then as Kurt is singing that song Blaine is kind of like oh. Oh he's beautiful. I can't describe the emotion, I was like red cheeked and smiling but with like angry eyebrows lmao. To be honest, this kind of flustered angry denial is how I coped with my own romantic feelings toward people too so maybe that's just how I react to things. Cute aggression lowkey idk haha

I can't really describe how night and day I was about it?? I went from really despising the character to just loving him and falling hard for the ship. I cut my long hair for the first time ever in my life to dress as him for Halloween, and started wearing a rubber bracelet with the word "courage" on it, he alone and the both of them together really got me through some bad times back then and I still find it funny just how much I disliked him and the ship at the beginning!

Chapter 58 of Out of Eden, aka the big Mormon!Klaine fic, is up on AO3.

Fic Summary: As a gay Mormon, Kurt Hummel has decided to go the rest of his life without falling in love. But toward the end of his two years as a missionary in Germany, Elder Blaine Anderson moves into his apartment—and Kurt’s best-laid plans fall apart.

Chapter Summary: Kurt reads a familiar book of Mormon passage in a new way. Plus, the missionaries visit the Audi museum and get letters from America.

When Kurt went to bed and stared up at the stars through the skylight, the doubts always crept back in.

Additional notes: There are three completely new scenes in this chapter that have not appeared on Tumblr in any form, and at least one scene that 's so different you probably won't recognize it.
